#sourcing stuff

I know it can feel tiring but you have GOT to train yourself to both source your stuff if you're the OP, and look for sources if you're reblogging.
It doesn't need to be super exhaustive (like when I sourced that Smithsonian/Barbie joke letter). Just something as simple as "wow, this pretty picture is captioned 'NASA released the most detailed image of Jupiter yet' and NASA images are all public domain, I wonder why OP didn't link it" and 22 seconds later realizing it's because that's not a frickin picture of Jupiter, it's AI.
(Same post had some porn blog in the comments arguing with every single person who called it AI by linking to NASA pages as "proof," and, I cannot emphasize this enough, the NASA pages did not contain the picture at all.)

"Not only is nothing she said correct, but the way that she is going about saying that STIs originate from bestiality puts a very harsh stigma on people who have STIs."
"This can make them less likely to seek treatment and diagnosis which can lead to serious, life-altering things to happen, like infertility and even death. Besides, saying that people get STIs from having sex with animals has been used in the past to be homophobic against people who contracted HIV. So let's not stigmatize things that are easily treatable, easily diagnosable, and can have life-altering effects if they're ignored." (@microbiologywes on Tiktok)

Keep seeing the (extremely correct) posts about keeping your stuff on physical media - CDs, DVDs, blu-rays, books, etc.
And yes, 100%, do not get rid of your physical media in favor of streaming. I did some of that about a decade or so ago before I learned better and there are books and CDs I now need to find again.
But something that I see a lot of people dismiss is that the digital versions are more convenient. Taking ebooks to travel is so much better than taking up half your backpack, having digital music is genuinely better than swapping out discs
The thing is, it's not mutually exclusive. Rip your CDs and DVDs but keep the discs - you can toss the cases in favor of more condensed storage and leave them in your closet until you need them again. Strip the DRM from your ebooks - you paid for them the same way you'd have paid for physical paper tree-based versions - and burn them to CDs as well for safekeeping.
You can play MP3s just as easily as Spotify in cars and in much the same way, and you can stream movie files from your computer to your TV just as easily. Tech can be both convenient and for personal preservation - you can do both.
Keep your physical stuff because streamers can just get rid of anything at any time, but you absolutely can keep the convenience of the modern digital era at the same time.
I spent several months last year digitizing the roughly 1200 discs that we've accumulated for the past thirtyish years - music, movies, TV - and it was not only the most fun project I took on, it's been the most rewarding because we have movies that aren't available to stream. But I can stream it to my TV with director's commentary any time I want.

a concerning amount of witchblr will be like "um actually new years was stolen by europeans from the ancient god scroobus mcdoobus" and then you actually try to research scroobus mcdoobus and it turns out he was invented in the 1940s by a conspiracy theorist who powdered every meal with ketamine and thinks that queer people are reincarnated fish

I agree that "in Germany your boss legally has to provide you with work while you're at your job" is a bit funny considering the German stereotype. But I am really annoyed at people who act like this is some horrible hypercapitalist thing on that post about pushing people out of their jobs by just not giving them anything to do. When really it's very basic worker protection (within the context of German emplyment law.) Because under most circumstances you can't just be fired from your job. Your employer has to provide a reason for firing you if they want to get rid of you. You also have a right to specifially the work you were hired to do.
So your boss having to give you appropriate work makes illegal any of the following:
a) Making you clean toilets instead of (or in addition to) the clearly defined office job you agreed to do
b) Not giving you work and then firing you for not doing your work
c) Waiting for you to crack under the intense boredom of having to stay on one place with absolutely nothing to do for eight hours a day while your coworkers are roped into it to shun you (or hate you because for some reason you're the only one who doesn't have to do any work) until you quit "voluntarily"
or d) waiting for you to crack under the aformentioned pressure until you do what the people in the notes said they'd do, like watching movies or doing a second job instead which is something you then can be reprimanded and fired for

This is from The Vegetable & Herb Expert by Dr. D. G. Hessayon; the edition I found still had the garlic warnings as of at least the 1997 edition.
A few other (though less baffling) tasting notes from the same book:
Sage has a very strong flavour. Its main role is to accompany onions in the traditional stuffing for duck and goose — it also makes an excellent accompaniment for veal and pork. It goes into sausages, kebabs, some cheese and into bean and tomato dishes, but you really must be careful not to use too much because it is our strongest-flavoured herb.
The most important thing to remember is that rosemary is strong flavoured and should therefore be used very sparingly. It is a traditional flavouring for lamb, pork, and veal — insert a few sprigs before roasting and remove before serving.
Add thyme to soups and stews, but always use sparingly.
This screenshot from a gardening Facebook group has been on my phone for several years and I'm not sure I'm ever going to be able to delete it. Apparently it comes from a British gardening book from the 80s. I know we all joke that the English are afraid of flavor, but I assure you, you are not prepared for this.

GARLIC
Until quite recently, scientists smiled at all the wonderful medicinal powers claimed for garlic, but recent research has shown that there is some truth in a few of the old wives' tales. Garlic, of course, has an important role in Continental but not in British cookery — it really isn't worth growing unless you are a fan.
Any well-drained spot will do. Buy a head of garlic from the greengrocer or supermarket and split it up into individual cloves. Plant them 2 in. deep and 6 in. apart in March. Apart from watering in dry weather there is nothing else to do until the foliage turns yellow in July or August. Lift the bulbs and allow to dry under cover, then store in a cool, frost-free place.
If you are a beginner with garlic, you must use it very sparingly or you will be put off for ever. Rub a wooden salad bowl with a clove before adding the ingredients. Rub the skin of poultry before roasting and then you can try dropping a whole unskinned clove into a casserole or stew, removing it before serving. If by then you have lost a little of your garlic fear, you can try using crushed (not chopped) garlic in meat etc. as the Continentals do.

#some of y'all think that critiquing a work is about digging through it until you find a gotcha #instead of actually engaging #like why are we encountering things that don't make sense to us in books and going right for The Author Didnt Do Their Research What a Clown #and not like. huh I wonder what that means. I wonder if there's context here that could help me find out. #this is not my english degree talking btw this is something that is supposed to be taught in like middle school #does this process Always turn up helpful context that will make you realize the author did that on purpose? ofc not. #sometimes authors do things not on purpose. sometimes it Is a mix up. but that shouldn't be your default assumption?? #not only because it's a bad ineffective reading practice but also because it's sort of a sad uninspired way to go about your life #like i'm begging you to approach art and writing with curiosity and openness and not this wacky sophomoric smugness (via @hoeswater)
GUYS I JUST SAW THIS ON TWITTER AND I AM DYING
