It’s so interesting because I know three couples who have Mars conjunct their composite Ascendant/ Mars in the composite 1st house. Their conflicts are often very public; as in people know when they are fighting or when they are not speaking. I thought this was interesting and very fitting. I will say that these couples have Aries or Scorpio on the composite ascendant which probably amplifies the drama(conflict). Thus, things may manifest differently in relationships that have ‘non-confrontational’ signs such as Pisces/Virgo/Capricorn on the ascendant.

Solar return years where your Solar Return Ascendant or Midheaven is in the same sign as your natal Midheaven or Ascendant, will likely be very pivotal years for you. With the Solar return Midheaven being in the same sign as your natal Midheaven, something major is likely to occur in your life in relation to your career or worldly status. By a change in ‘worldly status’ , I mean you may become a wife/husband, a mother/father, a doctor, a business owner, etc… something about your title is likely to change! You may even leave a job and start your own business, become unemployed, graduate college and so on! Major transitions and life changes are often indicated by a solar return ascendant or Midheaven being in the same sign as the natal ascendant or Midheaven.

People who have Uranus square Chiron in their birth charts often feel very isolated in the world. One of their major wounds often stems from the fact that they are different from most people, and thus they frequently feel like outsiders, or feel as if other people perceive them as being “weird”. This placement can make it difficult for a person to gain a real sense of community or belonging!

Jupiter transiting your 3rd house is very auspicious if you’re looking to get your drivers license! This can also be a very fruitful time, If you have some kind of online business/blog.

When someone’s Mars falls into your 8th house, you may feel a strong attraction to them, even if they are not your usual type. I’ve had clients who share this synastry with someone tell me that the Mars person was not their initial type, but after they were intimate their attraction towards mars skyrocketed!

If you have the ruler of your Ascendant or your IC (4th house cusp) placed in the 9th house, you will likely travel a lot or relocate throughout your life!

People with Taurus on the IC make good interior designers! These people often have a keen eye for decorating! Alternatively, I’ve also seen this placement manifesting as people thinking you come from an affluent/wealthy family even if you don’t!

A friend of mine fell pregnant when she had both her moon & mars in her solar return 5th house. What’s interesting is the north node was also transiting her natal 5th house that year!

Kylie Jenner is a perfect example of the positive way in which having a Scorpio moon can manifest; in relation to the Mother! People always say Scorpio moons tend to have “mommy issues” which can be true, but on the other end they can be exceptionally close with their mothers like Kylie and Kris! However, Kris Jenner is a Scorpio sun which may explain her bond with Kylie as they have a “sun moon conjunction” in their synastry. (She has admitted that Kylie is her favorite child) nevertheless, I’m essentially saying that having a Scorpio moon does not mean you’re automatically tied to the mommy wound narrative. It can actually be the exact opposite since Scorpio is the planet of extremes.

If you have Lilith in the 4th house, specifically if it’s conjunct your IC, you may have grown up feeling like the “black sheep” of your family.

One thing that I think a lot of people forget is the fact that there’s a duality that exists within most placements. For example, whilst Neptune in the 7th can suggest you attract partners who need saving, or perhaps you find yourself in relationships with people who have been victimized by life in some way, it is also possible that some of your partners perceive YOU to be this way. It’s not always cut and dry! Sometimes our placements (especially the ones in our relationship houses) can tell us how other people perceive us! Thus, most placements go both ways!

Who was your first ever OC? Do you still “use” them? How have they evolved over time?

Hiii thanks for asking! This got super long so I‘m diving each one with a ——— so it’s easier to read!

Officially, my first oc was/is Tomato the tomato girl, whom I made as a 12y old for a jump n run game called "Tomato and the quest for Spaghetti“ in one of those "make your own game“ online thingies that give you a bunch of small game templates to edit. The plot was (iirc) either that the holy Spagetti was stolen or lost, or that there was no ketchup left for said spaghetti and she went out to find it. …don’t think too much about the implications of the latter one.

I still "use“ her the way I "use“ most ocs I’ve got; that is, making them in character creators and occasionally drawing them if I‘m bored, as cameos, or memes. So not actively.

Since she’s basically been "dormant“ since I was 15, only her looks changed, mostly!

Originally her hair was literally just a tomato, and the outfit was a sleeveless square dress in red with a green scarf (and isn’t that a familiar color palette?),

then it became a winter dress with sleeves,

then went back to the first one but the scarf was gone and tried to actually draw her a bit rounder,

gained a friend and the hair‘s become regular hair,

ran both looks parallel as seasonal outfits,

and then I was 15. Have been sitting on a potential "future“ look for an older version of her, as she was originally set at ~12y old like me at the time.

Story as in character or proper story? For characters, Red‘s still the only one who both makes sense and doesn’t only feel like self-indulgence, so her :]

Actual story is…I’ve got a bunch of small "testing out how writing works“ WIP’s in the drafts (and I think 1 of them might even have been posted?) on my oc blog, but the only stories that actually ever saw the light of day were a bunch of crack fics about emojis me and my bff wrote in 6th grade. One person sent one part, and then the other one continued writing a bit from there. The greatest of them was the dramatic life and romance of the star and comet emoji.

Like. The Finale is one big fightscene on top of a volcano and also makes up half the story. The main villains are Manfred von Karma Ace Attorney and Günther Fire Emblem Fates. There’s a Yuri-on-Ice segment between the shit emoji and literal broccoli, which turns into the best romance in this entire thing and is to this day unironically the most invested I have ever been in a ship. A group of 7 only had 6 people in it and we didn’t notice until the very end. It was very bad, and very glorious.

I kid you not, if you want to have the best fun you could ever have with writing, grab yourself a friend or anyone online, and start writing an absolute crack fic with no holding back, it’ll be fun af

Aside from the absolutely best romance ever created that’s alluded to up there, for my own guys- whatever the heck is (supposed to be) going on between Violet and Mage. It’s basically "I vibe with who you are but hate what you stand for“.

Or alternatively, the arranged marriage trope but the marriage is friendship and the arrangement is Red, and also it’s enemies to rivals

Because, in principle, Violet and Mage hate each other. Violets entire life has been dictated by duties and trying her damn hardest to get good enough with light magic to meet the expectations of her family because of her high magic potential, only to fall through, and basically spent her whole life stuck in a single room with barely any contact to others let alone anything genuine. Meanwhile there’s Mage who wields his dark magic with an ease like it’s a kids toy and no problem using it for petty things, no regard for the damage it could potentially cause, can do whatever the heck he wants and go everywhere, and worst, having all the freedom in the world yet CHOOSING to lie to everyone and himself, while she has been forced to follow a script that ends with her doom.

On the other hand, Mage looks at Violet and sees another pompous royal judging him based on status differences, whose family is leeching off his hard-earned bearings just because some legend says they’ve got special god sealing juice in their line, AND she has the absolute audacity to deliberately let the people who know her think she’s still missing or even dead, when his best friend went missing 5 years ago and he never found out what happened, how dare she make others go through that pain.

They also both know the other is lying to themself basically 24/7 and reaaaallly don’t like having that mirror in front of their faces.

On the other hand, they keep having things in common, and the fact annoys them both whenever it’s pointed out. They’re both unashamedly manipulative. Mage got no problem lying and backstabbing for his own gains, while Violet has no issue using manipulation and such if that’s the "most efficient way" to solve any given problem (even if it includes pretending you’re MIA). They also very much like to tag-team to mess with others in that regard. They both hate having to play an act personality-wise, but also understand that’s often the only way to gain the best outcome of any situation.

And they‘re both absolutely nerds. Loving history, knowledge, learning things and excitedly tell others fun facts, a fascination for magic (something Violet only begrudgingly admits) and are absolutely thrilled that there’s finally another person who not only wants to listen but also KNOWS what they’re talking about and can add to it with their own info, AND they both enjoy talking to the other in general.

Basically, they would NEVER even walk near each other a 1km radius if they both hadn’t been friends with Red, but if she was ever out of the equation afterwards, there‘s a good chance they’d actually hang out with each other at least for a while (It’d inevitably fall apart. But there’s also a chance they’d hang out again perhaps, probably by accidentally being forced to work together again)

Also somewhere along the line their designs started reflecting that whole "completely opposite sides but also the same things in common“ thing a bit and I still think that’s the smartest thing I’ve ever done lmao

Okay, not to get into the TW discourse again today, because I am so done with that, but I do have to say one last thing about yesterday’s posts, because the ones I made really didn’t sit well with me in hindsight.

For years I’ve always stressed that I will never even try to defend Scott’s actions with Isaac in 3B, because they were flat out wrong and don’t need to be defended. I should have just stopped there. Every single other point I made in regards to THAT specific argument was irrelevant, because that’s the only thing that matters there. 

The scene was bad. Scott was wrong. It doesn’t need to be defended. 

HOWEVER.

(C’mon, its ME. You HAD to know there was a but coming.)

We are now willfully shifting gears to engage with another aspect of this entirely, the one we should have been focusing on all along:

The thing is I fell for one of the more obvious but effective discourse tactics, the shell game (hide the real argument behind a bunch of smaller arguments JUST tangential enough to the original topic that its easy to claim no derailment is happening - its basically the online equivalent of bigger law firms drowning their opposition in so many minor suits and filings that they eventually just can’t keep up).

Okay, because see.....here’s the problem. ‘The other side’ of this argument keeps trying to make it about that singular scene in 3A, and attacking Scott’s actions in it so obviously people are defensive....but we keep responding by trying to defend Scott’s overall CHARACTER rather than justifying a single scene. And we should be focusing on the scene, not the character. Because their fundamental argument has always been ‘well how can you defend THIS scene?’

And the actual answer to THAT has always been.....uh....we don’t?

There’s not a SINGLE Scott stan I know that likes that scene. It wasn’t something we wanted to see repeated, something we celebrated because Scott was exercising his primal Alpha power and right to rule or whatever the fuck. At no point have I EVER seen a Scott stan try and justify that scene as it being something RIGHT to do. Some people try and create a context for it to make sense of it in terms of why and how Scott could do that at all, but that is still aimed squarely at disavowing that scene as something we REJECT as an example of his characterization. We flat out DO NOT WANT IT.

Now.

Try and tell me the same can be said of Stiles and Derek stans defending THEIR abusive moments. Claim that nobody’s ever argued (extensively) how Stiles was JUSTIFIED in that hospital hallway scene in 5B. Imagine for a moment, what fandom would even look like if huge swaths of people hadn’t gone to fucking town defending Stiles for his actions in Lunatic, saying Scott deserved it and it wasn’t that bad, honestly. Same with Heart Monitor. Say people didn’t laugh and hope for more scenes like that instead of being eww why the fuck are they acting like this is normal BFF behavior. Pretend there weren’t YEARS of arguments justifying Derek’s violence with Scott and his betas by saying oh Scott did bad things too and also he said mean things so he deserved it and Derek was just teaching them how to survive and it was his right as their alpha, they knew what they were getting into, etc, etc, etc. 

No but seriously. Go on. Make those claims.

Y’know. So I can laugh at you for being dumb and saying dumb things.

See, THAT’S the difference here. THAT’S the ACTUAL issue constantly getting shoved behind endless attempts at obfuscation.

Yeah, Scott’s actions in that scene in 3B were bad. We’ve literally never disagreed on that point. Show me a single post from my blog or any of the Scott meta blogs, where one of us ever tried to argue that Isaac DESERVED what Scott did. Said ‘well Isaac did kiss his ex-girlfriend, what did he think was gonna happen?’

And the nerve of some people to habitually - for YEARS - harass Scott fans and hone in on that ONE Scott and Isaac scene like they actually give a single FUCK about abuse or abuse survivors, and like that scene has ever had anything to do with them not liking Scott.....

Because the truth under the right shell is the reason they never let the arguments focus on Derek and Stiles’ most abusive scenes at all....

IS BECAUSE THEY DON’T THINK THERE’S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM.

They’ve ALREADY spent years justifying that shit. We’ve seen it. Endlessly.

And like I’m gonna take deep thoughts on abuse from people who claim that taping up your friend and throwing lacrosse balls at him, getting him beaten up, treating him like an actual animal to humiliate him.....that all of that is normal, acceptable behavior between friends? People who have so little conviction on these matters that you just KNOW they would be screaming about how abusive it was if the roles had been switched and it was STILES being physically punished and it was SCOTT filling up a dog bowl and treating Stiles like a dog as payback for something? 

Nope.

This farce has gone on too long, and fuck your bullshit tactics of trying to weaponize issues you know some of us actually truly care about just for the sake of turning people against a fictional TV character. Why are we acting like you actually give a shit about what was actually wrong with that scene in 3B? You don’t! We have a literal decade of proof! Of you being willing to go to any lengths to defend not just Stiles and Derek’s actions....no, but their RIGHT to be physically abusive with the other characters. Saying that the other characters DESERVED this behavior, that they were JUSTIFIED in the HOW of their specific interactions.

You’ve never tried actually defending Stiles and Derek’s worst moments because you don’t think you have to. You're fine with them.

And then you turn around and act like you actually give a shit about what Scott did to Isaac, when you know damn well that none of us have EVER tried to argue that he was RIGHT to do that, or that Isaac somehow deserved it.

Like. LOL. Fuck off.

Anyway, I’m done with this particular discourse for good, there’s literally nothing more to say because its actually always been really simple all along....but like, free soundbite for anyone who does still run into these assholes and have them try and pull this shit per usual. They raise this argument again, just say this:

“Scott shouldn’t have done that, agreed. And we can talk about that.....after we talk about whether or not you think Stiles and Derek were justified in their worst actions in Heart Monitor, Lunatic, Ice Pick, etc. Otherwise we’re just not on the same page here and never will be, so bye.”

Anyway, I am literally done with this forever and ever, that is henceforth the only thing I have to say on this subject, everyone feel free to do whatever you will with this post, @ me and I’ll just smile and wave at those in the rear view mirror, its been a long road but at least we’ll always have Paris, etc etc etc aaaaaaand scene.

“I think this one’s going to be it.”

Vision remains unconvinced despite the realtor’s optimism. “We shall have to see.”

It’s the fifteenth town they’ve looked at, the thirtieth house, and nothing so far has been perfect. All the blogs online and the pamphlets at the realty office and the conversations with Mary, his persevering and upbeat realtor, have informed him that perfection can rarely be bought, but if he can find a home with good bones and have a can-do attitude, he can make it perfect. This he does not disagree with, at least when it comes to the house, but the town itself cannot be so easily molded and that has led to the disparaging length of the search.

Mary holds up her clipboard, blocking out the afternoon sun, watching him stare at the town’s main square. “Why don’t I go along to the lot and you just get a feel for the place as you mosey on over?”

“Very well.”

“Okay, take your time.” She gets back into the blue sedan she drove down in and leaves.

There is a particular atmosphere he is trying to find, a homey, old-fashioned quality. The first place he investigated was New Rochelle, the very location of the van Dyke household, and it was charming in its quaintness and soothing in its familiarity but it was also a tourist trap, signs speaking to its history and a handful of people wandering with cameras to see the house from the show. What Wanda deserves is the feel of a small town, not the exact replica and so he hired Mary and they have discreetly traveled across New York and now, growing desperate, have dipped into New Jersey. To be fair to the realtor, he is not an easy client, quick to determine if the feel of the area is off and speaking to her in the only comparisons he can make based on his knowledge of Wanda’s preferences. Some towns were too Gilmore Girls or not enough Bewitched, others only had one corridor that spoke to Family Ties while the rest felt like a modern city. They’d trudged through areas that felt like the Munsters and others where he knew it would turn into the Twilight Zone simply based on the odd stares and eerie feeling from the facade of happiness in towns long past their prime.

Vision surveys the current possibility and is not immediately disappointed. The town square houses a gazebo, well kept and inviting with its lattice work and the shrubbery framing the grass around it -an ideal spot for a picnic or a tea during their lunch hour, assuming they try out true domestication of idle employment. Lining the main road are small shops and little restaurants, eclectic in their conglomeration and relatively satisfactory to stroll beside, or so he tests, hands in his pockets and his disguise reflected back to him as he stares into a clothing shop where a mannequin rests in a red, billowy dress Wanda would adore.

A little spark jumps in his chest as he keeps moseying, the closest approximation to hope he has felt in his search, spurred on by the flower cart overflowing with roses outside a little boutique and the way all the townspeople have either smiled or waved at him when their eyes briefly lock. Vision is not known for his imagination which is why it is fascinating how easily he can picture walking this street, Wanda’s fingers twined with his, an ice cream cone from the creamery on the corner in her hand, her joy bubbling over as she tells him the latest frivolity of gossip in the town.

It’s when he turns down the road where Mary is waiting in her car that his synthetic heart begins to whirr at the trees lining the street, their thin leaves shading the few houses that stand with picture perfect porches for a lemonade in the stifling summer sun or a hot chocolate when fall begins to run its frosty fingers in the air. Curious as to their scientific categorization, Vision studies one, his hand running over the grayish bark that ripples with diamond-esque patterns. Slowly, and as inconspicuously as possible, he leans in and sniffs, cataloguing the pungent odor, one that if he was pressed to describe it would be spicy...not one of heat but of the spice that always filled the compound when he and Wanda baked after going to pick apples. The long leaves are pinnately organized, forming couplings that cling to either side of the branch. The final piece that leads to its categorization is the round green seed hanging below a pair of leaves. It is a Juglan nigra , the black walnut and all he can hear in its swaying leaves is the riotous laughter from Wanda as the van Dyke household fills with walnuts.

Vision smiles, overcome momentarily at the rightness of it all.

But there is one more determination before he commits to this life, before he decides that this is what he wants to promise Wanda the next time they meet. Apprehensively he approaches the car, tapping on the window to let Mary know he is ready. “What’d you think so far?”

The falsity of her grin should be alarming, yet he knows he is to blame for it, having had to inform her of her failure to find him what he wants dozens of times before . This time, however, he is happy to inform her, “It is quite promising.”

A real, full bodied smile erupts on her face. “Good, because I watched every season of that show just to figure out what it was you wanted.”

“It has been successful so far.”

“Come on.” She leads him down the road about ten feet before waving her arms like one of the women on game shows who is in charge of the grand prize. “Here it is.”

“I, um,” it must be some form of humor he has yet to master because there is no actual house, merely a stretch of grass with a lonely sign declaring For Sale! “Where is the house?”

Her laughter does not allay his discomfort at all, “Based on our search so far and how particular you are,” this is said with a friendly needling that no doubt hides some resentment, “I decided to find you the town and let you build the perfect house.”

The words wash over him, cling to his mind until he can comprehend the meaning. And then he can feel his lips curve up and part into a bliss of possibility. Before him is an empty lot, but in his mind he is already constructing the foundation of their future. After all this business with the Accords he simply wants a quiet life and before him it stands, floor by floor he sees the house form, visualizes himself bringing Wanda home for the first time, scooping her up to carry her across the threshold, her arms tight around his neck. They’ll paint the outside together, argue over the best place for the couch and whether the television should be a focal point. He’ll cook for her in the kitchen as she sits at the counter, informing him of his missteps before they happen. At night they’ll sit on the back porch, under the walnut trees and enjoy the silence of the world revolving. It is everything she had told him about, everything she has quietly smirked at while they watch her favorite shows, thinking he did not see her wistful enjoyment at a life of domestic bliss.

“I’ll take it.”

“Do you want some time to think?”

“No.” Vision shakes his head for added emphasis. There is a rightness here, an all encompassing hope for what their lives can be. “It is perfect. You can contact Stark Industries for the mortgage information.” Yes, this is where they can finally be together, where they can experience a life so far denied. This is where they’ll grow old together and never want for anything but each other.

The day also honors the rights of children and women. In 2007 the Taliban took over the city in which she lived and banned girls from attending school. As young as she was, Malala demonstrated fierce bravery by standing up to the Taliban. In 2009, Malala started a blog and wrote about life under Taliban rule. She also wrote about her desire to go to school. For three years, she and her father advocated for the right for girls to attend school. On the morning of October 9th, 2012, gunmen from the Taliban shot Malala Yousafzai in the head. She was just 15 years old at the time. After four days in a military hospital, doctors transferred her to an ICU in Birmingham, England. Multiple surgeries and weeks of rehabilitative therapy later, Malala began attending school in Birmingham.

Paper Bag Day -  Millions of people use paper bags every day. Readily recyclable, paper bags have been around for many years.  Margaret E. Knight became known as “the mother of the grocery bag” after she designed the square, flat bottomed bag, and the machine that would fold and paste them in 1870.

Pecan Pie Day -  Mix up the ingredients using primarily corn syrup, pecan nuts, salt, and vanilla. Occasionally, recipes vary by including sugar syrup and molasses or maple syrup. Other additions include chocolate and bourbon whiskey in some regions of the country. Top it all off with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Simplicity Day -  The day advocates a life of simplicity and recognizes the life of Thoreau.  In our fast, ever-increasingly busy lifestyles, the observance encourages stepping back and looking at ways to simplify our lives. It’s an opportunity to declutter and eliminate the unnecessary burdens that weigh us down. Even taking a few moments to tune into nature helps us to refocus and find balance.

A day like today 20 years ago the first novel of our beloved series was published in November 2000. This is an incredible anniversary and that’s why we’ll celebrate the whole month with events!

Arty Art Things ✨

Hellooo!

I've decided to post some of the arty things I've done either recently or in the last few years, well the pieces I'm somewhat proud of at least. All my posts tend to be a lot more wordy than they need to be but hey it's what I do here!

Conchúr White

Anyone one who's been on this blog for a bit will have probably have seen me talk about this lovely Irish fella. The pencil drawing is actually a year old as of yesterday, I only know that because screenshots of me flipping out about Conchúr following me on twitter popped up in my memories yesterday. I think I'd sent it to him at about 3 in the morning (I was not in a good head space at that point in time), so probably not what he was expecting to see when he opened his phone in the morning aha

The biro version is much more recent: I got bored while sat at my desk and doing research about university courses, saw a biro, saw my old drawing of Conchúr, had an idea. I revisited my GCSE art techniques and here we are. Again, I put this up on Twitter and now (at the the time I'm writing this) when you google "Conchúr White" it's the third top image of him which is a bit mad really. I think I spent all of about 20 minutes on Conchúr but another 45 minutes on the words behind him. The words are the names of the songs on his EP 'Bikini Crops', he doesn't just really love the idea of Channing Tatum driving him around at night in a daisy print bikini... Well maybe he does but what he does in his spare time is none of my business...

TechDif

So I mentioned that the pencil drawing of Conchúr came from a rough patch in my mental health and this one is no different! In fact this one came from an even worse circumstance so we love to see it. I had a bad, bad time in July and this started as a way of distracting myself from what was going on in my head. Without it, I can't honestly say I'd still be here so even if the final product of this had been a terrible mess I would still love it for keeping me alive. However, it did not turn out to be a terrible mess!

Now that the origin of this is out the way, where do I start with TechDif? Unlike Conchúr, I haven't really talked about them on here (unless you count one brief post about Citation Needed) before so I guess I'll do it here. The Technical Difficulties are a wonderful group of 4 British fellas who have had their fair share of fun online and even before. They did a radio show at university together, which went on to become their Reverse Trivia Podcast, later moving on to a panel show called 'Citation Needed': and a game called 'Two of These People Are Lying'. All of which I would thoroughly reccomend, they're one of my go to things when I'm having a rough time. All 4 of them are excellent! Tom Scott (red top, blue jeans on the picture) has his own YouTube channel which does content aside from TechDif. If you're quite nerdy and like science, linguistics, computers, or any number of other things you may enjoy Tom's channel. He is probably best described as "The Moderator" of the group, much like a tired teacher he tries desperately to keep everyone on track with what they're meant to be doing, but usually it does not end well for him. Then we have Matt Gray (space top, holding an ice cream) who also has a channel away from TechDif stuff, he does techy electronic things and has a series called 'Will it Soft Serve?' where he puts all kinds of strange things through a soft serve machine. Matt brings a very specific energy to TechDif and I can't fully describe what that vibe is but I love it. Matt and Tom also share a YouTube channel where TOTPAL is posted and they had a series called 'The Park Bench'. Moving on to everybody's favourite Gary Brannan: Gary Brannan (SATIRE hoodie, glasses) and can I just say, what a fella he is! He's just excellent! He is the one that will argue and rip into Tom the most (not in a malicious way) and hilarity ensues. There are some episodes where he is absolutely on it, getting all the points and others where he very clearly has no idea and that's where some of his funniest quotes come from. Given how badly I was doing at the time I made this, his response to it on Twitter was so so lovely. I specifically remember one tweet where he said I'd made him happy and although it was probably a flippant comment, it just made feel alright for a bit. Yeah I might be feeling awful right now, but I've made someone else happy so that's a nice feeling. Then last but certainly not least, we have Chris Joel (buffalo check shirt, beard)! I would be lying if I said he isn’t my favourite... His sense of humor is the one I vibe with most, he can get rather dramatic in parts and can chat bollocks like a champion. He has absolutely no online presence away from TechDif and, like Rens from Temples, I fully believe he’s a cryptid and lives off in a tree somewhere. 

The picture took me about 4 days to complete, well 4 nights because I did most of it between the hours of 12 a.m. and 7a.m. - I remember watching the sun come through my window each morning. It’s made up of lots of little pieces, all cut out and stuck on; even the sky and hills are made of separate pieces of paper. Nothing was actually drawn on the piece of paper it’s all stuck on, it’s not how I usually do things but if I messed up one little but I could just redraw it rather than ruining the whole thing. The most tedious parts to make were Chris’ shirt because I had to draw each square individually and then join the as well, and cutting out the ban-hammer in the bottom right was surprisingly hard. Every single detail of the picture is a reference to the podcast/shows, I still have the plan sketch and reference list knocking about somewhere. I listened to a lot of true crime videos while making it to the point that certain parts remind me of different cases: the brandy now reminds me of Peter Tobin, and the big spiral thing reminds me of Tim McLean (very harrowing case) - sorry that fact is a bit morbid but interesting nonetheless. 

I did post this for a little bit back in July, but I received some rather awful messages so I took it down. Generally, Tom Scott/TechDif fans are lovely but there’s been a few that have taken a disliking to me for some reason so I’m hoping they don’t resurface again. I’m in a better head space now though, so even if they do I’m more equipped to deal with it this time.

Hozier

This was a quick sketch I did in April, I was getting bored with lockdown and decided to summon the bog man himself. There’s not really much more backstory than that, no poor mental health story, no fun twitter story - he’s just here. He’s vibing. I will say I’m particularly proud of his nose, I just think it’s one of the best noses I’ve ever drawn. His hand is okay, but I think that the hands on my Conchúr drawings are better. So there is the Hozi-Boi...

The Corpse Bry

I’ve talked about Bry on here before as well, I love him, he’s excellent, top lad. He is a living Tim Burton character, he’s 6′6, very skinny, and his legs are longer than my will to live. I was watching ‘The Corpse Bride’ a few weeks ago and suddenly had an idea and so ‘The Corpse Bry’ came to be. I gave him a little panda friend because the panda has always been his animal - he used to wear a panda beanie all the time and his album had a panda on the cover. Again, there’s not really a fun story behind this one, I guess it’s somewhat fun because it’s the first art I made after finishing my psychology exams in October so it was nice to actually have the time to draw.

James Bagshaw

Ginger talking about Temples for the third post in a row? it’s more likely than you think! I did this one last week, I’d had a bit of a wobbly day and had group therapy on Teams in the evening and I just couldn’t concentrate on what was going on and I ended up doodling Mr James E. Bagshaw, the glitter crying fraggle man himself. It’s a bare-bones drawing that I could definitely work into more but I’m happy with it as it is to be honest. I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit and add the individual bits of fringe to his jacket, just thinking about doing that makes me tired. Maybe I’ll get around to drawing the whole band at some point...

Alice in “Wonderland”

This one is from about 5(?) years ago, it’s not my typical style and was a “study” based on another artists work (basically i just had to copy this fellas work). I’ll be honest, this one has a sketchy backstory that I won’t go in to because it’s not exactly a nice one, and because of that I also won’t say who the artist is that it’s based on. Despite this, I’m still really proud of this one and I’m so sad that I never got this piece back after I got taken out the class. I’ve considered trying this style again, I’ve even joked about doing another Conchúr drawing in this style as a nod to my progression through GCSE art, eventually leading to Conchúr drawn in ink on music manuscript and stained with neon paint and dyes - it would be quite the project!

So this has been quite a lengthy post so apologies about that but life goes on. Similar to the vinyl post, I’ll probably add to this as and when I make more art. Even if no one is reading these posts, I’m enjoying making them so that’s the main thing. It’s just nice to document things and the feelings that go with them. 💕

A Waddle Down Memory Lane: My Earliest Memories with Club Penguin

This is something a bit different, as we at Penguin News Network are primarily an insider blog for Rewritten’s latest updates. However, with Club Penguin itself turning 15 years old in a few days, I wanted to look back at my earliest memories with the online game. When did it all start? How’d I discover Club Penguin? Why do I hold Club Penguin so closely? Those are all questions I plan on answering as I share my nostalgic moments. - Boopenguin. 

My earliest memories of Club Penguin take me way back to elementary school. It was 2008, and over a year since Disney had purchased Club Penguin. I can’t remember the exact date, but I remember it was the beginning of a new school year, and I would come home every afternoon and immediately turn on Disney Channel as I did homework or played on my Nintendo DS. There used to be a brief commercial segment on Disney Channel called ‘Get Connected’. Basically, ‘Get Connected’ took you on insider looks of upcoming and trending Disney video games. One of the commercials that would constantly air was that for Club Penguin. Me never hearing about it before, it really enticed me to join.

However I was still a child, and I had to get my mother’s permission to join. I do remember it taking a few weeks before I actually joined though. Above is the commercial I think I remember seeing, but it could’ve been a different one. Sorry for the terrible quality, it was the only one I could find. Looking back, neither of us knew that I’d get hooked on Club Penguin and spend hours on it every day. Fun fact, Boopenguin10 was my actual username and I carried it over to Rewritten for the nostalgia. It wasn’t my choice back then, but I grew with it.

The first party I ever attended was Club Penguin’s 3rd Anniversary, ironically enough. I don’t remember if I joined right as it happened or not, but I do remember obtaining the 3rd Anniversary Party Hat and Ice Cream Apron. This party was a big deal too, there was a gigantic Times Square event in New York commemorating the anniversary party.  Immediately after the 3rd Anniversary Party though, there was the Halloween Party 2008. 

Halloween Party 2008 was super nostalgic to me for many reasons. Not only was the annual candy hunt super fun to participate in, but it also introduced the Secret Laboratory, where you needed the Rad Scientist outfit to enter. During the party, I dressed up as the Rad Scientist too. Another awesome feature was a massive storm that hit the island. Halloween Party 2008 had the perfect atmosphere from its decorated rooms, soundtrack, and the storm effects. 

This all brings me to one final memory, Dig Out The Dojo. The storm that hit Club Penguin during the Halloween Party struck The Dojo and caused an avalanche of snow to cover its entirety. In November’s Penguin Style catalog, you could’ve bought a Snow Shovel to help dig out the Dojo, hence the name. Back then, everyone speculated who ‘??????’ was (Sensei), and as more and more snow cleared out, repairs were being made. And then, a few weeks later, we were treated with the best reveal ever: a new multiplayer game called Card Jitsu. 

I played for a total of 4 to 5 years. I wanna say around 2013 or 2012 was when I quit, because membership became a bit too expensive to maintain, and more required to play. The last party I participated in was probably the Marvel Takeover, I found that rather weird to be quite honest. As for Club Penguin as a whole, I collected the books, the plushes, the toys, video games, you name it. I had that igloo and air hockey playsets and those were awesome. 

Club Penguin holds a special place in my heart, as it heavily influenced my life on the internet. It was my first multiplayer experience before I got older and found Steam, it practically babysat me and kept me occupied for hours on end. Club Penguin in my eyes is a place to just have fun and chill out. I was able to see it grow and evolve, and it bring forth new members every year. I am happy that Club Penguin remains alive through community-led revivals such as Club Penguin Rewritten, and that I can run this blog for you all. Happy 15 years, Club Penguin! - Boopenguin.

New Orleans Day Trip During COVID

Before we visited New Orleans, we googled what to do here during the pandemic and saw blog posts and tweets from locals emphatically asking tourists to stay away. Having spend a gorgeous Sunday here, we get it -- the French Quarter was crowded and very few people were wearing masks! For travelers still observing social distancing, masking, and other COVID precautions, NoLA was worse than any other city we visited so far.

Still, we took precautions and got a bit of a feel for the city. If you’re passing through here during the pandemic, here are some things we can recommend:

French Quarter (duh) - We downloaded a $2 audio tour by Free Tours by Foot via their Atlantis smartphone app. It was helpful in guiding us through the main attractions in this area -- but the area was really crowded. Lessons learned: Bourbon Street is gross, as was the likely super-spreader hotspot takeout line at  Cafe Du Monde (probably for the best that we skipped beignets anyways). Jackson Square was pretty, and the surrounding benches were perfect for eating our takeout lunch. Faulkner Books was open, and limited to a max of two people at a time (we didn’t go inside). Louis Armstrong Park, just outside the FQ, was the most peaceful and relaxing part of this walk. Overall impression of the French Quarter: rundown and full of characters - drunk tourists, needlessly aggressive drivers, panhandlers, passed-out homeless people - in a San Franciscan, post-apocalyptic sort of way. 

Logistics:  We went through a lot of water on this particularly warm and sunny January day - given many shops were closed we weren’t sure where to replenish, but the CVS Pharmacy by the riverfront worked out well. We found it difficult to find a restroom open to the public (we were turned away at a bar, and a lot of cafes/restaurants were closed due to the pandemic). We parked by our hotel so thankfully didn’t have to deal with FQ parking.

The Garden District - We also downloaded the Free Tours by Foot audio tour to explore this neighborhood of old New Orleans mansions. It’s quiet, upscale, and aesthetically pleasing. The tour mostly took us to see a bunch of mansions of varied significance, including Archie Manning’s and Sandra Bullock’s homes as well as places of historical note. St. Louis Cemetery looked intriguing from the outside but was closed for maintenance. We also wandered over to Magazine Street, a bougie oasis of shops and cafes.

Logistics: Street parking was plentiful and unmetered (we didn’t take the streetcar between here and the French Quarter due to the pandemic, but we did see the streetcars were pretty packed all day). We arrived around breakfast and stopped by French Truck Coffee, which we can recommend for a good iced coffee and a clean restroom.

Le Marigny - It’s not a true NoLA trip without a visit to Frenchmen Street, and we’re glad we went. It was quieter than the FQ, though not empty, and we heard some lovely outdoor music on our walk. We didn’t stop in anywhere, but it looked like some places were open. We also stopped by Union Square Park, which was perfect to rest our legs on a bench, and enjoyed strolling by colorful houses (and Banksy street art!) on the quiet streets.

Vegetarian Eats...what we ate, from best to worst:

Green Goddess - Located in a cozy alley in the French Quarter, this restaurant (while not all vegan) is known for having great vegan options. I’d eaten here once before and been somewhat unimpressed, but this time around we thoroughly enjoyed their take on a vegan uttapam, and the lemongrass tofu was pretty good too. 

True Food Kitchen - We’ve enjoyed this chain in Palo Alto and the D.C. suburbs, and couldn’t resist stopping by for a snack given its proximity to our hotel. The edamame dumplings (5 for $11) and a simple salad, while pricey, never fail to disappoint.

Cleo’s - This is a Mediterranean fast casual joint in a convenience store on Canal Street. It has great reviews online, but had we seen the storefront before ordering I think we would have passed. It’s grimy to say the least! Still, the food was decent - we’d give it a 3/5, okay but not amazing. 

Lodging

We arrived on Saturday evening after a 7-hour drive from Georgia and stayed at the Townplace Suites in Slidell, LA, just half an hour outside NoLA. It was perfectly adequate - clean, surprisingly quiet (for being right off I-10), and reasonably priced on Marriott points.

We spent Sunday evening at the Q&C HotelBar a 15-minute walk from the heart of the French Quarter, and we loved it! The hotel was chic, clean, and staff were super friendly. It appeared to be virtually empty, so they let us check in several hours early. They made us a pretty good Sazerac at the bar, too. We chose it both for its good online reviews and its being one of the rare hotels by the FQ that offered non-valet parking (we didn’t want other people in our car during the pandemic). 

Pro Tip: Turns out parking is free in New Orleans on Sundays, so to our surprise we didn’t end up having to shell out the standard $30-$40 for a 24-hour parking spot. If you plan to stay past 8 on Monday morning, our hotel warned us to be sure to feed the meter (or download the Park Mobile app to do so virtually!).

The duality inherent in her patronus feels accurate to the way her mind works (This was according to the Pottermore test, and honestly I agree with it so much.)

boggart — Narcissa’s boggart is Draco as a baby lying there with gasps and whimpers as he slowly turns blue and loses air. It’s not just about her son dying but rather seeing him fading as Narcissa stands unable to do anything to save him. She has never been able to banish a boggart at this stage. Eventually after her baby has “died,” the boggart shifts between people like Lucius and Bellatrix screaming at her that she’s a failure and a betrayal. She can’t banish the boggart at that point either. Narcissa’s biggest fear is in many ways her world crumbling around her with no way to stop in and blame pointed squarely at her for being unable to fix the situation. A good pureblood wife holds her family together. Narcissa is terrified she won’t be able to do the same.

After a life time of learning to think about legacy above all else, Narcissa has become incredibly pragmatic. She looks at each situation for how to problem solve, rather than taking the time to consider her own emotions. Some might consider Narcissa repressed, but she would prefer to think of herself as quiet and complex. There is a lot going on under the surface, even to the point that she is an over-analyzer if she doesn’t immediately know how to act. She is not rash, nor does she let her emotions get the best of her often. She can be short-tempered when pushed, but Narcissa has spent years learning to hold back. Above all in public, she is polite, although she can come off as cold to people who don’t know her well. She would prefer that, though, to people knowing too much about her opinion. Narcissa firmly believes it is better for others to see her as distant and aloof if it means staying adaptive in a changing situation, as she has had to do socially.

Narcissa Elladora Black was born the youngest of the Black sisters. She was the finishing touch in a trio of wonderful daughter, even if her parents would forever mourn their lack of sons. From her position as the youngest, Narcissa grew up even more spoiled than her two older sisters, but it was always clear to her what her duties were. Like her sisters, Narcissa knew it would be her job someday to marry well to a pureblood husband with a strong family name, and it would be her duty to uphold that family and produce heirs to continue her husband’s family line—a line which would naturally be hers then. The Black family are full of tradition and self-ties, but practicality was important above all else. While Narcissa did hope that within a few generations, her children could be tied back to that proud family name, she wasn’t silly enough to think that her family now would come above her husband.

She hadn’t expected that truth to be thrown in her face in such an ugly way as Andromeda took the first opportunity to muddy herself. Narcissa would never admit it later, but she did send a letter to Andromeda begging her to come back. A baby could be dealt with or left with the father. It wouldn’t make her the most desirable, but surely there would still be a pureblood husband for her to take on. Andromeda never responded. The whole experience was really the first time in her life that Narcissa had ever had fantastical version of the world shattered. Things weren’t perfect and couldn’t always be fixed. A strong family name could be sullied in an instance. Before Narcissa even had that husband’s legacy to protect, she was having to choose it over family.

When Lucius Malfoy began to court her, Narcissa was delighted. Here was a man who cared about appearances, both his own and his family’s. He was not the cold unfeeling man she’d been mentally preparing herself for. He was warm and delightful, and if Narcissa was willing to experience her wedding bed with him before she had a ring, well, that was nobody’s business but their own. Narcissa sparkled as a bride and shined as a new wife. She had only one issue. Narcissa seemed unable to carry children to term. After three miscarriages—Omega, nine weeks, Lysandra, twenty-six weeks, and Orane, thirteen weeks—Narcissa began to fear she would never carry a child to term. When she became pregnant a fourth time, Narcissa spent the better part of a year treating herself as delicately as possible and accepting weekly visits from a trusted healer. She couldn’t lose another baby. She wasn’t sure she could handle naming a fourth child that she never got to properly hold.

Then all Narcissa’s wishes upon magic were answered on June 5, 1980 with a beautiful baby, only four weeks early and there to fight. Despite her initial worries that their miracle would be snatched away, Draco thrived. They didn’t know he was Draco then, of course. They mistook their baby for a girl based on what information they had to go on then and named her accordingly. It was only a few years later when they understood what their five-year-old had to tell them that Lucius and Narcissa changed tactics. Narcissa and her child sat down together to talk through constellations and possible names associated with them. She’d been named for mythology—a concession her father had made on Daughter #3 to Rosier preferences—but Narcissa wanted her son to better fit what she considered the proudest part of his family history. Once Draco had decided upon his name, Lucius immediately announced him properly in The Prophet. The Malfoys never looked back, and they had no time for anyone who did.

Prior to that realization, Narcissa had lived with a certain level of constant dread. They had a beautiful, perfect child who would always be enough in Narcissa’s eyes, but she couldn’t help hearing her mother’s voice in her ear, grooming her from a young age to know that part of her duty as a pureblood wife was to carry on the Malfoy line. Could she and Lucius settle for one perfect child if that child would one day lost the family name? Her parents had stopped, but that had been after three children and with other male Blacks to potentially pass on the family name, which Orion eventually did. Especially in a time where family name and heritage meant everything, Narcissa wasn’t sure she could justify stopping without a proper heir. Then again, she never wanted her baby to feel like not enough. Her own parents had never explicitly guilted the three girls, but it was a known fact of life. Narcissa didn’t want that for her baby. Once Draco’s voice could be heard, it shocked her not because it meant the hard decisions were made—although that certainly helped—but rather because Draco was once again perfect, as he always was. Narcissa would have loved him and supported his choice in any situation, but as it was, she only added another reason her child was the greatest blessing she could have received.

But motherhood was not all Narcissa’s life focused on. Lucius had been recruited in many ways to join the Dark Lord’s ranks, and it was a great honor. Narcissa would have preferred neutrality as a self-preservation mechanism, but she did believe in those ideals and could appreciate what the Dark Lord was trying to do. She herself never joined, but she did support Lucius’ choice and often acted according to the Dark Lord’s whims. When he fell, it was a great shock to her system, but Narcissa couldn’t take the time to figure out how to feel about his loss. She had to keep her husband out of prison and their family reputation high. They were no longer servants to anyone but each other, and Narcissa scrambled to fix their situation.

It took a few years before she felt trusted. That time was full of swallowing her thoughts and smiling nicely, but the same had been true among the Death Eaters. She was simply swallowing a different kind of thought. The Malfoy family had always held power, and the same could be said of the Black family. Bellatrix and her husband had fallen from grace, but Narcissa needed to do as she’d always been taught and put Lucius’ family name above her own family blood. If that meant reaching out to a sister who she’d long above mentally severed, fine. Narcissa would do it. She and Andromeda would never truly be what they’d been, and Narcissa couldn’t look at her niece without mourning her bloodline and lack of title. Still, they were rebuilding. Slowly change for the better had happened.

Now Narcissa doesn’t know what to do. The Dark Lord’s return threatens all of the work she’s been doing. She still believes in purity and the ideas he’d promised, but she still doesn’t like the methods he’d stood for. She likes her husband free and isn’t sure a return to the Death Eaters’ full power will allow that.

plot ideas — Perhaps Narcissa (and occasionally Lucius) host regular tea events, maybe once a month. After Voldemort’s downfall, they started curating a little more charity into their guest lists. Now with rumors of his return, it’s a careful balance of the traditional gust list one month and their pity invites the next.

Headcanon: Narcissa cannot go to sleep without signing Draco a lullaby. Her night feels incomplete. On nights when Lucius puts him to bed, she sneaks in after to sing for his dreams. Now that he’s getting older, she’s terrified for the day he decides he’s too old for her to sing.

Headcanon: Narcissa doesn’t technically have a job, but her proficiency in charms, herbology, and potions could have made her a healer. While she knows only the basics of that profession, she does keep a lush garden and greenhouse. She also enjoys potion making and often makes at home things that other purebloods might buy. She would never lower herself as to sell them because her station is so much above something so ordinary, but that doesn’t mean she won’t give them to friends or occasionally use her own potions as a bartering chip.

Headcanon: Narcissa has always felt quite at home on a broom. In some ways, she was relieved the first time she played Quidditch and hated it because it didn’t fit the image she was trying to curate. Flying, though, is something she could never give up for image.
