Black Authority Figure Trope?
Anonymous asked:
Hello! I was working on a fantasy novel, and I was planning on making the king of the “holy kingdom of light” (name tentative) black, as a way to defy the racist undertones y'all helpfully pointed out in your black and white symbolism post. However, while thinking about it, I noticed a trend in the media I consume where black men would be shown as figures of stern authority — Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99, The Commander (and later The General) from Monster Hunter World, and Lordgenome from TTGL, to list some examples. Is there an underlying racist trope at play here? My best guess is the “black people = strong” stereotype, something I already have plans to avoid, but I’d rather err on the side of caution and ask as I couldn’t find anything relevant in your archives.
What gets me about these characters is that they’re placed in positions of authority but these characters rarely have little to do narratively. So it’s a token Black character in a position of strength/authority with little agency/means to exercise said authority. In their world, they are strong. But within the narrative, they are weak.

There’s definitely a pattern of strong, serious commander types in stories. I think of the Scary Black Man and Strong Black Person (Often women) tropes when I see these play out. It helps to balance out their personalities with traits beyond what’s assumed about them and / or have characters without these traits altogether. Black characters should be allowed softness, vulnerability, love and support too -- even when they’re “tough.”

Passing as a trans man is a nuanced and complex topic, but one thing I have been noticing as somebody who is a cis-passing (white) trans man is the way I'm treated when there is conflict.
I've noticed that in conflict, people are almost meek around me, willing for me to try working with them up until a woman is involved. When a woman (or, really, anybody who the other party assumes is one) is part of the conflict, they direct all their anger and rage to them. It's fucking insane the way a woman is treated when there is conflict, even if it isn't her fucking fault. These people are fundamental cowards for seeing my manhood as the only reason they can't be openly hostile to me, but it reveals a lot about how a misogynist thinks on an almost primal level.
I'm watching the women and people around me I care about being torn apart by people, and that's unacceptable. I can't sit around to watch it, and I don't want to do that. I need other people to perhaps read this and remember to not stand by if there is something that you can tangibly do to help, even if it's to lend a listening ear or let the person vent.

it really bothers me that people hate on rhaenyra for sleeping with daemon in 1x07. all of the hate, and I mean literally all of it, should be pointed at daemon. rhaenyra has been groomed and manipulated by daemon since she was a child. and while she may have been an adult by this time, it’s pretty clear that her infatuation with daemon has never gone away, and that she’s still completely under his spell.
on top of that, she reunites with him after losing harwin. she’s incredibly alone, arguably more so than she’s ever been, so of course she goes for him. she’s been brainwashed into thinking they’re soulmates. so no, rhaenyra isn’t a bad person for sleeping with him, nor is she “sexually liberated” as some people try to frame it. rhaenyra is a victim of daemon’s lifelong manipulation and emotional abuse.

She was the night wolf. But only when she dreamed. (The Blind Girl, ADWD)
"The hour of the wolf. The blackest part of night, when all the world's asleep." (The Kingbreaker, ADWD)
Thinking thoughts...It's the longest, darkest hour of the night, Arya is the Night Wolf + Dark Heart, it's the time when "the world's asleep" and Arya wargs into Nymeria and the leader of a giant pack of wolves while sleeping, and it's likely she'll reunite with Nymeria right before the long night...

Almost two weeks into my Daniel Kaluuya obsession, I can't believe how little this website talks about him. You guys are crazy about the plainest, most boring guys, and what is there not to like about him?? Is his skin too flawless? Are his brown eyes too big and expressive? Is he too funny and charismatic and smart? Is he too insanely talented as an actor?? What is the problem?? Why are y'all not obsessed with him too???

The Horned King's entrance is cool and all, but I knew it reminded me of something, and ever since I realised it was the Adiós meme I cannot really unsee it anymore:
