Searching best practices on JSTOR
Hi Tumblr researchers,
As promised, we're going to dive into some best practices for searching on JSTOR. This'll be a long one!
The first thing to note is that JSTOR is not Google, so searches should not be conducted in the same way.
More on that in this video:
youtube
Basic Search on JSTOR
To search for exact phrases, enclose the words within quotation marks, like "to be or not to be".
To construct a more effective search, utilize Boolean operators, such as "tea trade" AND china.
youtube
Advanced Searching on JSTOR
Utilize the drop-down menus to refine your search parameters, limiting them to the title, author, abstract, or caption text.
Combine search terms using Boolean operators like AND/OR/NOT and NEAR 5/10/25. The NEAR operator finds keyword combinations within 5, 10, or 25 words of each other. It applies only when searching for single keyword combinations, such as "cat NEAR 5 dog," but not for phrases like "domesticated cat" NEAR 5 dog.
Utilize the "Narrow by" options to search for articles exclusively, include/exclude book reviews, narrow your search to a specific time frame or language.
To focus your article search on specific disciplines and titles, select the appropriate checkboxes. Please note that discipline searching is currently limited to journal content, excluding ebooks from the search.
youtube
Finding Content You Have Access To
To discover downloadable articles, chapters, and pamphlets for reading, you have the option to narrow down your search to accessible content. Simply navigate to the Advanced Search page and locate the "Select an access type" feature, which offers the following choices:
All Content will show you all of the relevant search results on JSTOR, regardless of whether or not you can access it.
Content I can access will show you content you can download or read online. This will include Early Journal Content and journals/books publishers have made freely available.
Once you've refined your search, simply select an option that aligns with your needs and discover the most relevant items. Additionally, you have the option to further narrow down your search results after conducting an initial search. Look for this option located below the "access type" checkbox, situated at the bottom left-hand side of the page.
Additional resources
For more search recommendations, feel free to explore this page on JSTOR searching. There, you will find information on truncation, wildcards, and proximity, using fields, and metadata hyperlinks.

I am a javascript god (me when i’m delusional and also lying)
things done today:
6h of trying to not suck at javascript (got it to work the way it’s supposed to (i’m hoping))
managed to carve out time to actually chill guilt-free (well,, mainly guilt-free, like 70%)
#i should sometime take the time to actually learn javascript instead of going on google search sprees at random intervals when I suddenly#need js for things#like it would be a lot easier to get a grip on it if I knew the basics#now i just know like random bits here and there#read#book#studyspo#booklr#studyblr#aesthetic#codeblr#books#study#reading#bookblr#stemblr#stem academia#dark academia#tw alcohol#alcohol tw#september 2023#2023

hi. i've been inactive for a while and will probably continue to be due to the social and political circumstances in my country
if you're not familiar with argentina's university system please take a moment to read this:
as of last week, on oct 9th 2024, a presidential veto was passed on a law about the national university budget. the law was intended as a wage compensation, because for a few months now (and with the worsening economical situation) professors salaries as well as other university workers salaries have been below minimum wage. our teachers can't make ends meet.
all year we've had had public classes, weekly strikes, protests and all kinds of other forms of demands against the continuous and accelerated dismantling of our public education system, one of the pillars and prides of argentina.
particularly this year the situation has been dire because the salaries of our professors and other uni staff have been rapidly loosing purchasing power in a very short amount of time. there's been two historical rallies across the entire country defending our free and public education system:
the student movement in argentina has always been historical. many goverments have tried to take away our rights before, and we have always fought back. you can't learn about argentina's history without mentioning the force of its university students.
i didn't want to make too long of a post, but honestly i don't know how to summarize the severity of the situation:
we are looking at possibly stopping classes indefinitely, because the goverment has been defunding the national university budgets (along with our national science system and healthcare system, might i add) and we can't continue like this.
as i've said, this is not the first time the student forces have to protest for our rights.
a few weeks ago the Congress debated a law of university funding, that declared "budgetary emergency of the national university system, given the increasing costs of essential goods and services, the impact that they have for salary commitments and operating expenses of all national universities." basically, to ingrease asap the budget because otherwise the system cannot work.
the law passed both representative cameras of the Congress, and then was vetoed by the president, Javier Milei. as stated in our constitution, a veto can be surpassed if it goes through and is approved by 2/3 of both cameras again. however this wasn't possible because our representatives apparently don't agree with our rights, and the law finally didn't pass leaving the university system budget in a growing crisis.
student unions across all Argentina organized assemblies and took action to protest against this desition and in favor of defending the our national systems of education, but also science and healthcare.
as i'm writing this, 72 faculties (and counting) have been occupied by students, and some others have taking different types of action in different national universities across the country. there's quite a lot of footage online, but i'm leaving here some videos of the voting for the occupations (x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x) and protests (x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x). again, all this is from these past few days. and of course there's also opposition from Milei's sympathizers and police repression. still we resist.
i'm writing this in hopes of sharing our reality and trying to explain just a little bit of what we're going through as a country. this goverment has been destroying all that we cherish and pride ourselves in, the things that make Argentina a great country; a single post can't contain all of it.
#please share#politics#university#argentina#studyblr#studyblr community#latam tag#argentinian politics#education#global south#current events#all those links with the x are from my twitter timeline. didn't even search for them#also i've included descriptions and sources for the pictures#i can't focus on study posting tbh and it feel wrong not acknowledging this

I was in a meeting where I had to share my screen to show some code errors. I totally forgot about my tabs and I had my Spotify playlist I made of my favourite ship (I love you Thorfinn and Canute).
They took notice.
They pointed it out.
I died inside.
Tip: always clear your unwanted tabs before a meeting 💯
#They said “who's canute?”#I mean Vinland Saga is an amazing anime so if they do search later who thorfinn and canute are 🤷🏾♀️#xc: side note post#coding#programming#codeblr#studyblr#studying#comp sci#vinland saga#thorfinn#canute

2025年06月18日 (禮拜三) [14/100]
I went for a walk this morning and found a rabbit :)
Anyway, there are my binary search notes. I think I can successfully write my way through a problem that requires it if I remember how to calculate mid (to avoid overflow) and low <= high, but I still don't fully understand why low <=high and not low<high... at some point, low must equal high, I guess...
Anyway, I'm going to look through a TypeScript and Node.js course today. If I finish them both quickly, then I'll do a coding test, but the rate things are going, I'll probably have to take the test tomorrow.... I hope that's not too late...

⚙ One of my favorite job search tools ⚙
Name: Huntr
Website: Huntr.co
What is it?: Job Search Chrome Extension. It's also available on iOS, but that's only for viewing your boards, I believe.
Why should I use Huntr?
Organize everything in one place: With Huntr, you can easily organize job titles, locations, company names, salary, job descriptions, URLs and more. Simply highlight these details, and they will be auto-filled and saved to your Huntr board. This feature helps you keep track of all your job opportunities efficiently.
Create different boards: Huntr allows you to create multiple boards, making it convenient if you're applying for different roles. You can easily track and manage your applications without getting confused. The default categories on the Huntr board are: Wishlist, Applied, Interview, Offer, and Rejected, but you can also add your own categories.
Upload pictures and documents: Huntr enables you to upload various files, including PDFs, and attach them to your job saves. This feature is particularly useful when you receive an interview offer and need to refer back to the job description. You can also write notes for each job, keeping important information handy.
Share your job progress: Huntr allows you to share your job search progress with your family and friends. This feature comes in handy when you want to keep your loved ones updated or seek their advice and suggestions.
Insightful metrics: Huntr provides analytics and metrics to track your job search progress. These insights offer valuable information about your application success rate, interview frequency, and other relevant metrics.
Saved job searches: In addition to tracking your own job applications, you can also view saved job searches from Huntr's own job search engine. This feature helps you discover new opportunities that match your criteria.
Visual map view: One of the best features of Huntr is the ability to view a map with pins representing the locations where you have applied for jobs. This feature is particularly beneficial if you're open to working in different locations.
I was blown away when I stumbled upon this tool! It caught my attention right away, and I couldn't help but dig deeper to find out who's behind it. I immediately hit that follow button on LinkedIn when I found them. Job hunting smart, not hard! 🤭

If anyone wants, I will compile and organize all the job boards I have bookmarked relating to biology, plants, conservation, fieldwork, research, and such positions. THERE ARE A LOT. I don't want to do this unless it would be helpful because it would take like. An entire afternoon just to go through my job bookmarks folder, much less organize and write additional advice. And that is not an exaggeration that is based on past efforts.
I think I also have an ancient reblog on my main blog with a lot of resources so I'll look for that too if people want. But lmk about all of these bc otherwise I'm going to put this off for a good few months. I wanna help people in a similar boat to myself but if no one is going to see or need it there's not much point in prioritizing it, instead of doing it when I have free time to work on it slowly over a longer academic break. So to be clear, I'll do it regardless, just. If people need help with that stuff soon lmk so I don't post about it too late for it to be really taken advantage of.
If people have other jobs seach related questions or concerns pls feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
Note: these job boards are almost all focused on U.S.-based positions

Again, if anyone has seen anyone post their results of doing the ALG method long enough to speak a significant amount, let me know. I'm going to do one last search on youtube of people discussing their Dreaming Spanish progress, and even if they didn't do it completely the ALG way (since some users of Dreaming Spanish videos studied with anki or word lists or word translation lookups at some point) I hope they may still describe what activities they did to develop speaking skills after they had developed good listening skills first. I want to know: did they shadow? Did they talk on their own? Did they talk with a language partner, and was it someone correcting their mistakes or them correcting their own mistakes later, or them just talking with no monitoring of mistakes besides making sure they keep talking until understood (as in re-explain in other ways if their partner is confused)? Did they do writing exercises? Did they do speaking or writing drills?
#alg method#alg#rant#studyblr#im just still looking for any people who shared results#i searched for 6 hours yesterday and ONLY found ppl sharing their passive results of listening and reading ability#(which was great! like many methods involving getting input you understand - it helped reading and listening be great)#but only one person shared their speaking results and that part of the process. they did 200 ish hours of tutor speaking practice and sl#shadpwing. and did monitor accent mistakes and word choice mistakes.#another person spoke very early on and only in the target language with tutors#so they did get alg type input but spoke WAY earlier than alg recommends and than most other alg learners#and that person wasnt purposely doing alg they just were basically self-making their own comprehensible input lessons with tutors#using pictures and asking tutors to explain them only in target language. until learner knew enough to ask more complex things in target#language

LinkedIn Career Explorer
Hiya everyone, I came across something interesting while browsing LinkedIn that I wanted to share, especially for those in the job market, particularly in the tech industry. If you're not familiar with it, this could be valuable information for your job search~!
LinkedIn Career Explorer is a tool provided by LinkedIn that helps individuals find new job opportunities based on their existing skills and also assists in identifying the skills needed for career transitions!
Basically you add your city and the job title you’re applying for and it gives you:
Skills Needed: Career Explorer may suggest the skills and qualifications required for the job you’re interested in.
Related Job Titles: It offers suggestions for related job titles, which can broaden your job search and open up more opportunities. E.g. You enter “Web Developer” and it would suggest Web Development Specialist, Web Application Developer etc. From there it even shows you what skills you need to build on to transition from the original job you entered to the one they suggested. Also, it shows a “skills overlap” to highlight that oh the original job does have a lot of similarities in skills!
Job Market Insights: It provides data on the demand for specific job roles in your city. This can help you understand which industries are thriving and where your skills might be in demand. Tells you if it’s popular from someone to transition from job A to job B, a rating out of 10!
Networking Opportunities: LinkedIn often suggests connections and groups related to your career interests, helping you expand your professional network too!
They use their own data so it's independent to what's outside of LinkedIn, so keep that in mind in terms of what they say about popularity and skills need but, in the end, I think it's really useful!
