One thing that’s been on my mind for a while is, assuming TW’s story goes into the next school year & all the 3rd years go off to their respective internships/retirement home, that’ll mean about half of the Houses will have vacancies for the position of house-warden &/or vice house-warden. I was wondering who you think, among the first & second years, would be most likely to fill those positions or if new characters will be introduced instead. I know it’s tricky since in some cases, there aren’t enough remaining characters to fill in the various positions at their Houses, Pomfiore having a vacant Housewarden AND Vicehousewarden spot but only one non-mob student (Epel) remaining being the main example of this.

Or in Heartslabuyl’s case (& this is just my opinion) neither of the remaining characters (Deuce & Ace) would be suitable in that position (yet).

An interesting idea regarding both of these problems would be bringing in RSA students (namely Chenya & Neige) to fill in those spots by saying they’re doing an exchange program for their internships.

I also can’t help but wonder if for their third year, Kalim & Jamil will swap positions, with Kalim believing Jamil would be a better Housewarden. While I don’t think it’s very likely, it would certainly be interesting.

And then there’s the matter of what if the story goes even further, to what would be the first year’s third year. At this point, new characters would have to be created to fill some spots.

Anyway, thoughts?

Hello, hello! I'm glad you enjoy my work, and thank you for providing the interesting question. Hmmm... well, the cast is pretty limited without the third years. Looking at who we have left after the third years move on to their internships, there's only Ace or Deuce for Heartslabyul vice dorm leader, Ruggie and Jack for dorm leader and vice dorm leader positions, Epel and Ortho for their respective dorm leader or vice dorm leader spots, and Silver and Sebek for Diasomnia's two seats. Since Octavinelle and Scarabia are both composed of second years, I'm assuming the dorm leaders and vice dorm leaders will remain the same (particularly between Jamil and Kalim so as to not disturb the status quo).

Right now, I truly don't think anyone is in a position to ascend to dorm leader or even vice dorm leader 😅 but if I absolutely HAD to choose, then:

Riddle as dorm leader (since he's still around) with Deuce as his vice (if only because Deuce is more earnest and tries his best to follow the rules; I cannot imagine Riddle picking someone as immature and argumentative as Ace as his second-in-command. Deuce may not always deliver, but he at least attempts to live up to the spirit of the Queen of Hearts.

Jack as dorm leader and Ruggie as vice dorm leader. That might seem like it should be reversed but hear me out: Ruggie wouldn't want to commit to being a dorm leader because of all the extra responsibilities cutting into his time. Vice, however, is fewer responsibilities while still looking nice on a resume. I also think he just works better as a supporting role rather than the leader. He could probably easily convince Jack into stepping up too. I don't believe Jack would want the seat (he's a lone wolf, damn it, not the leader of a pack!) unless Ruggie convinces him he's a good fit and to give it a shot.

Scarabia and Octavinelle stay as they are.

Epel is vice dorm leader at BEST (and that's if whoever the dorm leader is accepts him). I seriously do not think he is prepared to be dorm leader yet, and I still have my doubts with vice dorm leader. He's just starting to appreciate what it means to be tenacious and just getting to understand the true power of beauty; I feel he has to focus on that first before he leads anyone. As is, Epel would run Pomefiore very differently than his predecessors.

Ortho I can see working as either dorm leader or vice dorm leader, with no preference for one over the other. He has the capacity to handle the workload (being a very capable A.I. and all), and I feel that this kind of thing would be valuable for learning about the human experience.

Okay, I can definitely see Sebek and Silver having a (friendly) rivalry over who will be Diasomnia’s new leader, each believing they are more well-suited for it than the other. Eventually they’d dual and it would come to a draw, but Sebek lets go of his pride and yields to Silver. I feel that Silver as dorm leader and Sebek as his vice just makes so much sense. It’s a good overall encapsulation of their character development and lore. Silver, the human prince, ascends to reclaim a “throne” (Diasomnia’s), mirroring Malleus, the darker fae prince before him. Sebek learns humility and defers to a human when he would have previously fought tooth and nail against them. What’s more, this also mirrors how his grandfather was in a secondary position to Lilia (with Silver assuming the role of a leader like his father did as general).

On the topic of RSA students coming to NRC on internship exchange programs… Simply put, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Firstly, we don’t know if RSA has the same internship graduation requirement that NRC has. Secondly, a student exchange program does not an internship. What meaningful work experience would they be getting just by going to different school and attending their classes…? Not a lot. Additionally, I doubt NRC would allow temporary students take on such meaningful positions—not to mention all the pushback and disdain the NRC student body would generally have for this idea.

I'd love for TWST to introduce new named characters to the cast 😭 That's for real all I'm hoping for after dealing with OB Malleus, that the main story will actually progress forward in time to the next school year and let us meet new lovable idiots while our old lovable idiots grow up...

Another idea I would love to see fully realized is each of the first years eventually succeeding as dorm leader in their respective dorms. Ace and Deuce fistfight for the dorm leader seat; their positions swap every other week. I even wrote headcanons for this prompt (although they don't include Ortho since they were written before he was officially made a student)! It would really show us how everything has come full circle and how our first year friends have matured and come into their own.

Y'all had to have know this was coming: we play with the NPCs.

Everything is literally the same (visually), the VAs just switch who they play.

This is another obvious one: Sekai Swap

Again everything is (roughly) the same (visually), but the siblings have switched roles. So: Tsukasa is the one who ended up in the hospital and Saki is the one who forgot why she decided to pursue her dreams (in this case it was becoming a pianist). Shiho is the one who was part of a group before joining her current one (Leo/need), who was assigned a role and got bullied for things she couldn't control, and Shizuku's the one who wants to go pro (as an idol of course), so she finds jobs that could help with that (honestly the Hinomoris are giving me the hardest time to figure out a good swap for). Ena is the one who pushes herself too much and compares herself to her friends, while Akito is the one who seeks validation for his singing and gets disappointed when people prefer his selfies and OOTD posts over his singing ones.

The School Sekai, Stage Sekai, and Street Sekai are all created by one person (personal vote goes towards: Saki, Minori, and An, I will also accept Toya because I honestly think that'd be fucking hilarious), the Wonderland Sekai and the Empty Sekai are both created by a group.

Personality swap but the characters keep their....quirks (? I don't know what else to call it). Like, Tsukasa could have Kanade's personality but he'd still be loud as fuck. Ena could have Saki's but still be a bitch (I say that affectionately). Etc., etc.

...we need more kid designs and thus kid 2d models, but SEKAIs were created when they were kids. Saki would visit the School Sekai whenever she was out of the hospital but still unable to see her friends. Minori got to meet Haruka, Airi and Shizuku earlier and they all decided to become idols together. An and Akito are guiding these two, scared, lost, kids around the Street Sekai and introducing them to street music earlier. Tsukasa and Mafuyu are both the only ones who start off alone. Tsukasa goes into the Wonderland Sekai whenever Saki is at the hospital and their parents stay with her. He doesn't like being alone, so the Sekai brings him comfort and it was hard for him to accept that someone else could enter his Sekai. Mafuyu would go to the Empty Sekai to find comfort in Miku. She's a lot more like Len, hiding behind Miku, shy, absolute baby. She also has a hard time accepting others can enter her Sekai. For those two, Sekai was a safe haven, a place to ease themselves and find comfort. So when other people start showing up (not the VS), they're upset.

...this is a sign I've read too many groupchat fanfics: they're all part of a Nightcord (because I'm pretty sure we've all agreed Nightcord = Discord) group chat and all the area conversations are about shit that has been brought up in the chat. Bonus points if all of the convos are mixed units. Extra bonus points if they have no idea who started it in the first place.

I'd love a subtle fuckery where, again, everything is pretty much the same, but certain characters have had their colors swapped. Tsukasa and Saki, Shiho and Nene, Minori and Honami, Shizuku and Kanade...

Unit Shuffle 2: Electric Boogaloo

There's a world where rather than Tsukasa saving Toya, Toya saves Tsukasa. Where Kohane is the one who chooses An as her partner. Where Airi, Haruka and Shizuku are the ones who put on a show for Minori and pull her up on stage in their Sekai because they want her to see as the lights become a pale peachy/orange color for her. Where Mafuyu is the one doing the saving and not being saved.

Different childhood friends. That's it. Potentially could go along with number 10.

Once again, visually, everything is the same, but the last names are all over the place. Meet the Kamishiros: Ichika and Ena. Oh, the Aoyagis? You mean Aoyagi Shiho, Aoyagi Emu and Aoyagi Rui? It's strange how Saki Hinomori and Tsukasa Yoisaki look so alike.

morro was found as a kid rooting through garmadons trash, so ofc garm went "hm. i want this rat as my child" and adopts them dkjfghdfjh they got their earth power from their parent, who is still unknown to everyone. they're still just as emo bc they have an excuse to wear black at all times jdkfghkjdfg (morro also gets kai's jealousy arc and realization that the green ninja is to be protected, so they end up taking kai's role as the green ninja's older sibling, in this case rumi)

cryptor was built by cyrus borg in this au, but still deep in the forest where no one could find them. he was originally built to assist borg with household things but he started to see cryptor as his son as his ai developed. borg got kidnapped at some point, so cryptor is trying to find him. unknown if cry knows about being a nindroid at first or not, but he's prone to short circuiting due to how snappy he gets.

I've been showing a good friend BL twice a week since early pandemic. She's seen a lot of the best stuff, and recently finished To My Star 2. We were discussing how the seme/uke and top/bottom perceptions affect how the characters are portrayed.

With TMS2, I commented that the scenes we get to the end where they keep switching who is big and little spoon felt like a tasteful way to show that they were versatile. We also noted that Pat and Pran are never shown in a way that confirms their positions.

Does your spreadsheet track anything regarding top/bottom presentation, and do you have thoughts on BL and how it presents this?

Verse Characters in BL 

What an interesting question.

Well I would argue that Fighter & Tutor are the only Thai BL couple who are explicitly verse, in their case they talk about it openly in terms of "showing ownership" which is pretty clearly code for who fucks whom. As in, the idea of being taken or taking (invasion) = ownership. Trust a BL script to use the language of war for an act of communication and connection. 

My spreadsheet doesn’t track this because it’s so rare. I remember a couple other times getting very excited about it (other than Why R U?) but not which shows. 

Okay here’s our biggest example: 

Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese shows them verse (explicitly depicts the sex act both ways), but it’s one of Japan’s discussions about the nature of identity and intimacy and possession. It could actually be argued that the whole movie is a debate of what seme/uke means and does to its characters, what obsession means, how long term devotion without consequences of boundaries corrupts. It’s kind of like the very dark version of what could have happened to the characters in My Beautiful Man if they had never managed to find each other and reconcile (and Hira learn to accept and express himself). The leads in CMDoC are genuinely at war, so the lens showing us who fucks whom as an expression of who is winning the narrative battle at that point in time. 

Look, I don’t like this movie, but apparently if it’s Japan I’m always going to have a lot to say. 

I mean there needs to be enough self aware queerness in the BL to realize this should even be addressed - otherwise just slap seme/uke on it and conflate personality with sexual preference (SIGH). 

Also the BL has to somewhat follow the characters into the bedroom, and it would need to be higher heat which, in and of itself, is pretty rare. 

So I did a heat ranking, then a ratings sort (since I’m more likely to rate verse characters higher) and here’s a short list of ones for which a case for verse... could be made. 

Why R U? - Fighter & Tutor (no question - couched in a request to “prove/show ownership”) 

My Day - Ace & Sky (also I think this is pretty clear via their sex scenes - they were the other ones I was thinking of, also they engage in some fun light kink, I LOVE these two) 

To My Star 1 & 2 - implied by the cuddling debate in 2

Bad Buddy - actually they imply, when asked at one point, that it’s still open to debate between them, so we don’t know what they settled on but given their dynamic, probubly verse 

HIStory 2: Crossing the Line - ZiXuan & YuHao, I mean YuHao's fantasies go both ways so I think he, at least, is verse

Mr Cinderella - mostly because of the linguistic grappling, but also both actors have a history of the seme role (clearly also implied top) in their other BLs, they swap tropes around a lot too in this one 

His the movie - it’s just... not important 

Ai no Kotodama - I actually think they have a kinda conversation about this, it’s been a long time since I watched it though, and 2010 = intentionally confusingly vague about everything 

Boys Love - right so there’s a bit of an underpinning dialogue about this in both installments. In both cases I think the “teacher” is meant to be the bottom, but also the student is so desperate and so needy there’s an implication that he would do ANYTHING, including alter his whole identity (even sexual preference as a top) in order to be with the object of his desire, which is part of what makes their love destructive - it cannot and does not conform to... anything, least of all seme/uke (which at the time, when present, was always conflated with Top/bottom). 

Either of KarnNat’s pieces, I mean I think Nat is meant to be the catcher, but they don’t act their higher heat scenes that way, it’s extremely mutual, and power exchange back and forth in terms of who kisses whom and stuff. 

Frankly, any of the couples who have no seme uke are open to debate since in Thai BL especially Top/bottom = Seme/uke (it shouldn’t, but in the narrative it’s implied). BL couples where there is no seme/uke

So top/bottom/verse is difficult because it means we follow the characters into the bedroom AND have a glimpse into their penetration preferences, that means very high heat, and there is (statistically) less of that in BL.

As opposed to Dom/sub/switch which plays into personality and correlates better (but not perfectly) to a seme uke dynamic because it is about who has the power to make decisions.

And my definition of Seme/uke - which is the character showing the most narrative drive to consummate the relationship (physically or otherwise) = seme. 

Finally: 

Sexual preference does not correlate to personality! Please stop this. I put it to you in het terms: 

If you are a straight women who likes to ride reverse cowgirl style does this show up in your personality as you walk around in your day to day life? No it does not. 

So a boy likes to fuck or be fucked - that’s like cake verse pie, it doesn't say anything about how aggressive that boy is in relationships. And prying into that dynamic is tantamount to me asking you about the details of your penetration preferences. (Which, to be fair, I probubly would, but I'm a curious, rude, intrusive shitmonger.) 

Also, it behoves me to add, plenty of gay men do not like penetration at all. Plenty of straight women don’t like it. Or don’t like vaginal but do like a-play. And plenty of straight men like to be pegged. A-play has to do with how sensitive you are, how relaxed, how prepped, how much lube, whether you find the idea a turn on when applied to yourself, how self conscious you are, and a host of other factors.

19. Do you enjoy creating OCs or do you prefer to stick solely to canon characters?

Mostly canon, I think. I'll add in OC's as necessary, but usually not in big roles in the story. OC children, however... I am more intrigued by. Not that I have any fics where that exists... yet

20. Do you prefer writing AUs or canon fics?

I used to be all about the AUs, but at a certain point (with the NCIS fandom) I reached the acceptance stage of grief and started enjoying canon compliant fics more. I still love canon divergence, though, in basically any story. I'll write a thousand "they finally get it together and tell each other they love each other" fics if I have to. But I also just like softening the blow and dealing with whatever pain canon has laid upon us.

43. Is there a trope or idea that you’d really like to write but haven’t yet?

So many. I've had tons of ideas lately but I love the time loop trope, body swap trope, and time travel of course.

If I did a time loop it would be angst during the cancer arc, Scully soaking up every second of her time with Mulder, but of course at the end of every day, he won't remember any of it.

If I do body swap, it would be Diana and Scully swapping. Diana using it to get up to no good, and Scully being whisked off on Syndicate business before she can talk to Mulder and tell him what's happening. I think we're seeing an angst pattern.

So many things you could do with time travel. I've thought about a Mulder being sent forward in time to look after Scully when his future self is abducted. Not sure where I'd pull him from in the timeline exactly, but I lean toward season 2 abduction arc Mulder. Imagine him finding out she's pregnant 😭

Anyway, I could go on and on. Fake dating, marriage of convenience, forced proximity... yes please.

You're allowed to not like race swapping (I'm not being racist, please please please keep reading before forming a opinion)

I'm serious. It's okay to be unhappy about seeing characters you love look unrecogisable.

HOWEVER, It is NOT okay to harass actors for getting casted in roles.

They are actors trying to do their job, build their careers, and take the opportunities they get. THEY ARE NOT BAD PEOPLE FOR ACTING.

When Princess Ariel and Annabeth Chase were revealed to be portrayed by black actresses, I was surprised yes, and I knew I might find the change hard to get used to but I was never mad at Halle Bailey or Leah Jefferies AND I NEVER EVER DARE HARASSED THEM (like some of y'all did).

In fact, I feel sorry for them. It's a very hard task for black actresses to get major roles, it would be even harder if race swapping didn't exist... AND THAT'S A SHAME because everyone deserves to have their stories told, stories that honor their cultural identities rather than someone else's.

Before I go, I have a question to ask all of you. Do you see this much outrage when characters are whitewashed?

I don't. I really don't.

I've noticed many times in my life that biracial people are given preference to play fully POC characters and no one gets upset.

Disney has, on numerous occasions given roles of fully POC characters to half white actors or actresses.

Rocky and K.C. were both fully black characters played by Zendaya, who is half black and half white

Mo from Lemonade Mouth had two Indian parents, yet Naomi Scott is only half Indian.

Other examples of whitewashing I can come up with from the top of my head are:

Jinx from Teen Titans. I know she's animated but it was something that upset me (even as a huge fan who found Jinx's design pretty) so I'm going to point it out. She was originally an Indian sorceress but the show portrays her as paper white.

Aang, Katara, & Sokka in M. Night Shyamalan's worst film ever. Other characters like Zuko were race swapped.

Everyone is West Side Story 1961 except Anita.

I could come up with more examples since there are tons but I think I've proven my point.

also want to note I love Zendaya and I think highly of all the other actors I mentioned in the whitewashing part. I don't blame any of them for accepting those roles because they want to build their careers and I'd have done the same in their place but I'm just trying to make a point that black people and other POC deserve roles too and you have no right to be mad at them for accepting a role.

Naming in the Power of the Sun AU

Naming is a very important tradition in a clan. While in canon these are simply known as a prefix and suffix I will expand upon them in this AU.

Prefix = Hereditary name

Suffix = Titular name

Hereditary Names

Names that are given from parent to kit (also known as familial names). These names are highly personal. Kits are often recieve their hereditary named after their apperance (Bluekit, Spottedkit, Ashkit, Squirrelkit etc) or a certain association or memory in their parents lives (Oakkit after the tree in the storm, Mistykit after the river). There are other meanings behind certain hereditary names such as ThunderClan naming their kits after deceased relatives and ShadowClan after virtues they want their kits to have.

Titular Names

These are the second part of a name presented to a cat by their leader. Cats may recieve their titular name after an achievement, attribute or personality trait that a leader believes has defined the apprentice. Cats may be honoured for their kindness, skill, bravery, beauty, etc that they have provided to the clan

In conclusion hereditary names are personal, family given names aknowledging the parents' past and feelings. A titular name demonstrates what a cat can provide to their clan.

Example:

Tiger - (Hereditary: to manifest stregnth as a sick kit)

Claw - (Titular: fighting skill, won many battles)

NAME CHANGES

There are certain cases of a cat willing to change their name. This is commonly accepted as names are a title used to recognise their achievements in a clan or physical apperance.

Case 1: An Outsider joining a clan

When an outsider joins a clan they may partially keep their name as a hereditary name if preferred as it is honouring an outsider's family but some choose to change it anyway due to stigma and to better assimilate into clan life. A young cat or kit would have their name changed regardless as they are nursed by queens therefore have a familial bond to the clan. Titular names must be changed however or it is seen as a sign of disrespect to the clan (Daisy's name changed to Daisyfoot, Firestar is a bit more leanient so allows Purdy and Mille to keep their names)

Case 2: Clan swaps or changed by choice

When a warrior switches clan, their new leader has the right to change the warrior's titular name to assimilate them to their new clan. Additionally up until the kit becomes an apprentice, one of the Queen's rights is to change their kit's hereditary name (Rainflower changing Stormkit to Crookedkit, explaining why Hailstar accepted this decision)

Case 3: Names after Injuries (Unofficial & Unofficial)

Unofficial: Some names are simply nicknames used more and more over time until their usage is more common than the warrior's actual name. For example Halftail and Oneeye are Sparrowtail and Whiteye however most of the clan calls them Halftail and Oneeye anyway. This is often the case with elders whose family have gone to StarClan

Official: May be changed after a warriors achievement and is seen as a higher honour than simply recieving a titular name such as Clawface of ShadowClan and Tornear of WindClan being renamed for being formidable in combat. BREAKING TRADITION

Like many traditions there are exceptions to these rules. One generally accepted one in ThunderClan is that a family member can request a titular name for their kit. Squirrelflight requested to Firestar to name Hollyleaf after Leafpool (to supposedly "honour her past medicine cat training and relationship with her mentor the role" as a cover).

A cat choosing their own titular name is seen as taboo and an insult to their leader. Tallstar consented to Crowfeather choosing his titular name mostly out of sheer suprise.

A cat changing their hereditary name is seen as completely taboo. I likly won't cover Nightheart in this AU but his decision to change only his hereditary name was a way to reject the legacy of Firestar he felt forced to carry

Designation Names

___kit: To aknowledge that a young cat is too young to take part in the gruelling training, hunting and fighting of everyday life. Their role is to eat and grow up well so they are prepared for being named apprentices.

___paw: To call on StarClan to guide the young cat through their training. Also as a reminder to the clan and the young cat that they need help and support to become a full warrior. The apprentice is still defining their identity.

___star: To aknowledge a leader has been accepted by StarClan and that their multiple lives makes them different to their clanmates. The warrior ancestors have given the leader nine lives, in return must follow StarClan's will and be a beacon for their clan

Once it was a tradition for a nursing queen to have their titular name to "___mother" while taking care of their kits and then switched back upon leaving the nursery. However this tradition has been phased out due to it being impractical

Howdy! BIPOC, 19, they/them, looking for 19+ roleplayers on discord for a MxNB oc x oc plot. Trans and cisgenders characters are welcomed!

I have three plots in mind:

- Y/C is a sexually repressed, awkward priest during the renaissance era. He comes across M/C, an injured fae, and with his religious vows to help the needy, he takes it in until it heals. He eventually finds it harder and harder to resist such an attractive creature, and has to fight against his own morals and his desire. ( This plot would include commentary on a sexually repressive society and religious themes. If your character is trans or queer in any other way, then it would include commentary on internalized queerphobia and being closeted. )

- M/C is an aspiring scientist, but struggles with poverty. By coincidence, they found a paper ad, asking for an apprenticeship with Y/C. an experienced scientist. With nothing else going for them, they replied to the ad. Little do they know, Y/C had many apprentices in the past and they all had seemed to disappear for…unknown reasons. ( Basically a mad scientist x apprentice plot. This one would have more 🕊️ elements to it like noncon. This plot could be modern or 19th century. )

Y/C is openly queer and sexually liberated and M/C is heavily closeted and reserved. They were childhood friends, but had a rather bad falling out in highschool because of their different views. Unknowingly, they were both accepted into the same college and were assigned as roommates in their new dorms. ( A bit of enemies to lovers, some light 🕊️ elements like queerphobia and toxic relationships. Modern. )

I am okay with a short or long term plan for all of these, but I am looking for a long term roleplay partner where we can roleplay many different plots. You must be okay with smut, as I don’t roleplay only sfw plots. I am switch, but I do not play primarily as dom or top, I prefer being able to swap between roles. My character will have a vulva, so do keep that in mind. I am semi to adv lit and write in third person - I only accept people who write the same. Be able to provide daily responses, inactivey is okay as long as I’m warned. I’m CST if that’s important.

Atari 2600 Chronicles 1980 #6 - Circus Atari

The paddle controller duology of 1980 continues. As does the blatant copying of game concepts in the form of 1977's Circus. This was the time where this was sorta acceptable, so i'll let it slide... for now. K.C. Munchkin would trample that leniency 2 years later.

You could even argue it's a clone of a clone. You play as a seesaw that holds a tiny stick figure who is supposed to be a clown, and another clown comes from the side of the screen and flings himself on your inanimate log. That causes the other one to fly up and destroy moving balloons, who are colored red, blue and yellow. Do that with a whole row (or the full board if playing on another mode) and they get replaced with new ones. So yeah, it's a honky trumpet version of the tride and true Breakout.

It's one of the better ones, too. It's surprising that they managed to get the bouncing physics working as well as they did here, you need to place your seesaw exactly right to get the necessary height. You can even mirror it so you can get out of a tough spot, a friendly thought for sure. There's also the difficulty switch that increases the speed, honestly I think I prefer that, my timing seems to be better adjusted to it for some reason and it SEEMS easier to rack up the points by being placed exactly right for the clown to be in the air for an extended period.

Now originally, I was very skeptical and there's multiple reasons for that. Obviously the need for a paddle controller plays a role, but it's moreso the lacking audiovisuals that kinda takes me out of it. They're not THAT bad however. Just not ambitious enough, as you'll see. It is worse when you look at it from the outside, much like many other early Atari titles. Besides, you're not buying the console for that alone, are ya?

The Verdict

Graphics (4): That other games were only marginally better doesn't mean it's any good. It's got the WaCkY flopping clowns in the least detailed way possible, you barely notice it while playing. Dying gives the stick figure an odd rectangular head. I don't get it. The blue background choices as of late have been strange, it's been a fairly big part of like 4 games in a row outside of Night Driver, and then there's the fact that some of the balloons are a different shade of the same color too! I just wish it didn't leave this stinky first impression as it's not even that awful despite my complaints.

Sound (6): The complete lack of music REALLY hurts Circus Atari. Circus had it, Clowns on the Astrocade had it, why not this one? Probably memory limitations. That doesn't mean it sucks in it's entirety though. I actually quite like most of the noises here, it helps the enjoyment of the game in my opinion! I gotta go into more detail about the 'satisfaction factor' for my explanations to make sense though, so you won't hear it right here.

Fun Factor (7): The not-actually-paddle controls on Switch do get in the way a little bit unfortunately, but otherwise, this is a very pleasant arcade romp to add to the slowly growing collection. There's plenty to be satisfied about here. In fact, that is exactly what I think is the best part of playing the game. It has a strong sense of dopamine hits. When you get your clown positioned right, bam that's many points in one go while the sound effects keep rolling. Get all the red balloons? Big points, an extra life and 'pew pew' noises to boot. Speed up enough that your little man is actually flailing around and you're trying to keep the streak going? Satisfaction. It's still Breakout with sprinkles added at the end of the day, I am not gonna keep enjoying myself with how repetitive it can get, but for short bursts of a good feeling? Yeah, I like it.

Longevity (8): Very solid showing here once again. Main problem is a lack of originality in all the modes, all you can really swap between are the conditions of balloon respawning, the addition of borders you gotta jump past and the very thrilling change of game mode to old faithful Breakthru. Get past that however and you'll find yourself getting a lot of mileage when hunting high scores. The manual encourages you to 'go pro' by overflowing the score. 9999 points is the non-overflow max as with Space Invaders. As someone who couldn't even reach 1000 on the easiest mode, that's got me quaking in my boots! No change in gameplay over time is a bummer, but the game is tough enough as it is already.

Oh yes, multiplayer! This is a cool one for cooperative play, I reckon. It's got all the variations and two more on top of that.

“Maya, the episode will start without you!” Miles called from the couch in the office.

“Coming!” He heard her respond, albeit muffled through the wall, before she practically flung herself out of the bathroom and over the couch.

She flopped down next to him, and grabbed the popcorn from the table. Maya had suggested they watch the new episodes together as a “team bonding exercise”, after learning that he was also a fan. 

While that is normally something Miles would prefer to take to his grave, in the week he’d known Maya, he found she was quite nosy. 

At first, she’d found his signal samurai keychain, and asked what it was from. It didn’t surprise him that she didn’t know, Signal Samurai had been off the air since he was in middle school. After telling her it was an old Samurai show, she’d asked if he watched any of the newer ones, and he’d mentioned he watched Steel Samurai.

This prompted a slew of questions like “Who’s your favorite character”, “What’s your favorite episode”, and last but not least, “Can we watch this week's episode together?”

“Let’s go!” She said as the opening started to play.

“Shhh,” he laughed, taking a handful of popcorn.

Miles groaned and waved his hand around half heartedly to find his phone. His ringtone, a standard buzzing noise, was not as pleasant a wake up call as his alarm.

With his face still buried in his pillow, he accepted the call and brought it to his ear.

“He-”

“Miles! Turn on the TV, it’s horrible! He- Wi-” Maya continued to stutter out different words, as Miles turned on the tv.

“What happened?” Miles asked, as the tv turned on to the news. Will Powers’s picture was on the screen, and the text said he was a murder suspect. That didn’t seem right.

“They found the evil magistrate dead and they think the steel samurai did it. We have to take the case, there’s no way the steel samurai would do something like that!”

“Alright, calm down. Meet me down at the detention center in half an hour, and don’t forget to have breakfast on your way. We aren’t making snack stops.”

“Awww, fine.”

“Miles, I changed my mind,” Maya whispered as they entered the meeting area of the detention center, “he’s totally guilty.”

“Maya,” he hissed, giving her a half hearted glare. “Excuse me, Mr. Powers?” He asked, as he approached the glass. “My name is Miles Edgeworth, I’m a defense attorney. I came to ask what happened yesterday afternoon.”

“Phoenix Wright is prosecuting again?” Maya asked, as they left Gumshoe. “What, is he stalking you or something?”

Miles sighed, “It’s only our-well my, second case, it’s purely coincidental. Now come along, and try not to touch anything.”

“Why?! Think I’ll break something?” She jumped in front of him, and glared up at him.

“That or contaminate the scene,” he smirked. “ Assuming that detective hasn’t done so already,” he murmured, as he stepped around Maya. She pouted, before running after him and going back to her usual chipper self.

“And the great prosecutor is all depressed because you broke his win streak! He deserved it, he was super mean.”

“Congratulations, WP!” Maya cheered, as Miles smiled and nodded along.

“Oh? Oh! Heh heh.Thanks to you, I’ll be able to don the Steel Samurai outfit once more! I can’t wait to get back into that sweaty costume and… ...? Is… something wrong?” 

“No! O-Of course not… Aah! M-Miles! Wright!” Will turned around, only to find himself face to face with prosecutor Phoenix Wright. No one said anything for a minute, before Phoenix seemed to shrink a little.

“Edgeworth, it has... been awhile…” 

“It has. The outcome of the trial…” Miles trailed off, he wasn’t entirely sure what he’d meant to say. Phoenix and Larry had always been the ones with people skills, they were the ones who brought him into their little group of friends.

“Hmph, always the perfect defense, go ahead. Feel free to gloat.” Miles frowned.

“No. The outcome of the trial, we never would have reached it if you hadn’t helped. Thanks to you, Mr. Powers is free and Ms. Vasquez is facing her crimes.” He extended his hand, “thank you.” Phoenix looked down at his hand, but didn't take it.

“Pleased to meet you. I’m Powers.*sniff*” Will stepped in, causing the slight tension to disappear.

Phoenix nodded, “Wright, I must say, your acting skills are quite amazing. I would never have guessed you are the man behind the helmet.” Will looked like he was trying to decide if he was supposed to be offended or not. Phoenix turned to Miles again, and said, “I must say, it’s no surprise we met again after all these years. It seems you haven’t changed.”

“What’s he talking about?” Maya asked, looking between the two boys. Phoenix was standing tall again, and it almost looked like they were about to fight.

“I only wish you had. Thanks to you, I am saddled with unnecessary… feelings.” Miles raised his eyebrow in question. Phoenix sighed before elaborating, “Unease… and uncertainty.”

“I would say those are rather necessary.”

“They only serve to get in my way.” Phoenix took a step closer, and jabbed a finger into Miles’s chest, “You listen to me, Miles Edgeworth. Don’t ever show your face in front of me again. That’,” he jabbed Miles again, “what I came here to tell you.” With that, he turned and left.

For the first time since they had begun talking, Miles turned to the others in the room. Will looked a little scared, and Maya looked like she was still trying to figure out what Phoenix had meant. Will spoke first.

“Umm… Mr. Edgeworth? Is… that guy your friend?” Miles felt a little surprised, he hadn’t thought about what they were. 

“What? Friend? As if! They’re rivals! Rivals! Right?” She turned to Miles, who was still thinking over how he’d define their relationship.

“While I do not believe they are mutually exclusive, “Maya frowned, she was smart, but sometimes Miles chose words she really had to think about, “I would say yes… for now.”

“Huh? What do you mean for now?! You need to try being more open, sometimes talking with you is like talking to…” she trailed off.

“A brick wall?” Will supplied.

“No. No. He’s not a brick wall. More like…” she clapped her hands, “I got it! Talking to you is like talking to a cat.”

“A cat?” Miles asked, as he began to pack up his papers.

“Yup! I don’t know what’s going on in your head most of the time. But you listen, and sometimes you share.” Miles smiled.

“I think your analogy needs some work.”

"Suzume" – The Movie for Everyone Who Didn't Get What "Your Name" Was All About

I love, I really, really love Makoto Shinkai's 2016 anime movie "Your Name", because aside from telling an absolute blast of a perfectly entertaining body-swap romance story that en passant tackles hot topics like gender roles and urban versus rural life (which alone would make it a close-to-perfection mainstream movie), it also manages to find the perfect metaphor for an indescribable loss, for a kind of grief so profoundly that it cannot be put into words. And although never mentioned in the movie, for me it was always clear that the central catastrophe of "Your Name" directly alludes to the Great Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami that started on 11 March of 2011. Which for me made this movie into a great piece of art for generations to come.

Enter "Suzume", another anime movie by Makoto Shinkai. About dealing with the aftermath of catastrophic events. A movie that directly states that the central trauma of its main protagonist can be traced back to a specific day 12 years ago. A day in march. And yes it is stated which exact date in march it was. Guess the number. Yeah, that one.

I won't lie, the way this was revealed in the movie was a pretty darn strong moment. It was foreshadowed throughout the whole movie, it was stated more and more clearly, and it still struck me quite a bit when it was finally revealed. Because Makoto Shinkai is a fucking genius of a director who just knows how to tell a story. But still. I admit to being a bit disappointed by the lack of subtlety that "Suzume" revealed here.

Plus, the resulting plot leaves a bit of a weird aftertaste. As one Japanese reviewer whom I watched on Youtube mentioned, one of the narration's implications is that most earthquakes in Japan have a supernatural cause that can be avoided if certain gifted people resolve some kind of emotional imbalance in the area. Which is a fascinating idea that – like all of Shinkai's movies that I know – is wonderfully deeply rooted in Japanese Shinto religion. But it still results in a weird mix of mainstream fiction and real-life tragedy. Maybe as if one was told that the Winchester brothers of "Supernatural" would have been responsible to prevent the Columbine school shooting, or that Marvel's Avengers should have prevented the September 11 Attacks. It's just a bit weird to me.

On the other hand, I heard Makoto Shinkai talk about his inspirations in an interview, and he pointed out that his main motivation for "Suzume" was him finding out that many people that watched "Your Name" did not understand its relation to the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake, and that, even more dramatically, a lot of young people – abroad as well as in Japan! – seemed to never have heard of this tragedy. So yeah, I understand him. And I can accept that "Suzume" might be an important film, and a great addition to "Your Name". I guess it's just that I'd sometimes prefer to live in a world where things don’t need to be spelled out to be understood.

However. All my whining about a lack of subtlety and potentially weird aftertastes aside, "Suzume" is one heck of a ride. From its marvellous first scene that blends into the title screen with a verve that I have not seen for years, to the lovely "what happens to the protagonist next" animations that accompany the credits, "Suzume" is a marvellously animated movie bursting with beautiful images, clever foreshadowings and heartbreaking tributes to the remnants of past disasters. It is what Makoto Shinkai can do best: A perfect mix of mainstream fun and hot topic commentary. Most likely the best fantasy dramedy romance road movie of the next years to come!

One detail still bothers me though. It's something that already annoyed me in Shinkai's previous film, "Weathering with You": While most products depicted in "Suzume" are just clever allusions to real brands (e.g., we have POKKA sweets instead of POCKY, and – my personal favourite! – BEIKO clocks instead of SEIKO ones), there is one scene in the middle where Suzume goes hitchhiking and the family she travels with makes a lunch break at some burger place. And, gosh, that scene really that goes immense lengths to assure that even. the. dullest. goshdarn. audience. member. will notice this burger place to be FUCKING MCDONALD'S. Just… Why?

Anyway, if you have the chance to watch "Suzume", do give it a try. Especially if you know and love "Your Name". And if you can view it at a cinema, then go for it! The sound alone is worth the ticket, and gosh those pictures!

Just… do me a favor and don't visit McDonald's afterwards, yes?

I’m still insane about FRAME btw. They’re doing a “rewrite” of Great Comet of 1812 with more crime.

Eventually Arashi scraps the whole thing and just writes it herself with Leo composing, but Anzu has the original play on her phone as a gift from the main cast as a thank you.

The cast is as follows: Natasha is Shu, Pierre is Tsumugi, Anatole is Ibara, Sonya is Yuzuru, Hélène is Rinne, Marya is Niki (because he’s gone gray), Fedya is Kohaku, Andrey is Keito (unwillingly), Bolkonsky is Eichi, Mary is Wataru and Balaga is Madara.

They’re doing this play in the dead of winter, so we get a lot of shots of the cast covered in snow/shivering in their costumes. Madara gets mild frostbite. Tori sets a chair on fire for warmth after asking Eichi and his sister for advice. Ibara has a mental breakdown on the bleachers they’re using for the audience. Wataru is having the time of his LIFE.

Yesterday in the midst of the queen dying tumblr frenzy i just read the first paragraph and short circuited i could not handle reading more lest i fucking die. You combined my. You combined my favorite musical (well it's a tie with Thrill Me but whatever) and my biggest hyperfixation *shakes you by the shoulders* im sooo normal.

Wataru as Mary and Eichi as old Bolkonksy is killing me. I am listening to their song rn and im actually dead on the floor, Wataru would have so much fun. In the "where are my glasses??" meltdown halfway through the song Eichi would make direct eye contact with Keito in the wings, that's 80% of the reason he accepted the role. The fact that Keito is playing his son is even better. Eichi vs Shu here is like. War 2.0

Pierre as Tsumugi................no words. I expect you mightve seen the time last month when i had a breakdown cuz i kinned his first song too much to be healthy for a 20 yo. Moving on,

Madara as Balaga is just correct, he'd have the time of his life. But for Dolokhov, i kind of want Hiyori to play him. Is that ok? I think the ibara-hiyori-rinne trio would be funny.

I also think having Rei play Marya would be funnier, but yknow what would be just insane? Mika playing her. Ill give you a minute to think about how this would flip their dynamic and relationship like a tornado. No one would survive. Theyd have to swap 2 weeks into the production mika and yuzuru's roles just so theyd make it to opening night. Also Mika singing Sonya Alone would destroy me, go listen to it Now and tell me he wouldnt have flashbacks to Shu's breakdown in the the war. Id add lyrics to prove my point but itd just have to be the whole song cuz it just fitssss anyway anyway im sooo normal about this.

Hostage situation. Both direct and more indirect situations would work. Like Nunnally is kidnapped (as an individual or in a larger group? targeted or accidental victim?) or she is actually a hostage in a royal setting. A princess sent away to the enemy/hostile kingdom to ensure the peace (obedience?) between the states. With or without arranged marriage in the background. The latter do can be also done in the mafia verse as I can imagine similar setting for the competing gangs. I really would like to explore the Stockholm syndrome more as that was the original idea for Nunnally, but, somehow, got missed a bit.

Building on that arranged marriage tropes (both for royal, mafia even perhaps human verse?). I really like this trope as it can go many different directions from fluff to angst and all the way round. But what I really want here is a bigger mess. Like Nunnally is betrothed to one man and in (mutual?) love in another. Like older and younger brother? A king and a knight? A mob boss and a hitman? Anything goes from both or one angle.

Then reincarnation plot…but not really and I do not have a good verse on that. But imagine Nunnally is thought to be (but is not) the reincarnation of someone’s lover/beloved wife? Preferably a king? Someone in the position of power. So that she cannot easily brush it off. Her family forcing her to pretend she is the one? A risky game? Or maybe not a king but an unnatural being? A demon? And then she actually falling in love while he realizes she is not the one. Or he is actually accepting her feelings even if she is not the one? There is such a great potential in it.

A disinherited princess? The only daughter of the deceased King who was deprived of her heritage. Managed to run away and now trying to get back the kingdom. With someone looking for the revenge on her distant family/usurpers? Another Lord who wants to use her to get into the power and throne? Or perhaps someone who believes in justice? Or perhaps she did not manage to escape and is forced into the marriage for securing the throne? Someone to rescue her? Running away together?

Witness protection programme (there is a verse for it) Nunnally got herself involved into the wrong kind of love (marriage). With the gang boss. But she could not adjust to living in the criminal world and decided to leave (still loving or not that person). So, she is covered under the witness protection programme. Could work with the agent protecting her? Her lawyer? The prosecutor? A hitman sent to kill her? Or a gang member she run away with? A member of another gang wanting to use the situation? Or if you’re adventurous, how about being her lover/husband and having the mixture of angst and fluff?

Would also like to write something in the Victorian settings…but no clear ideas here.

I needed to make two characters for a double of RPs I’m doing. I had realised that the characters I did own either didn’t fit the plot or were so centred into their clan that I couldn’t swap them out. I randomised them for a base to work on, but did make changes to fit what I wanted.

NutPaw is a medicine apprentice. He had a very neglectful mother (BettleSong) who didn’t even want lots and a father (BranchHare) that never disciplined any of them. BettleSong had snapped at NutPaw when he was begging for milk, clawing at him and giving him the scar on his brow. He had two siblings, CoalPaw and FerrelPaw. Since NutPaw was the runt, CoalPaw bullied him a lot and used him to take out any anger he had. FerrelPaw just sat by and watched.

The only peace NutPaw ever got was in the medicine den, where he spent a lot of time, helping. This grew his love of the role, so he became an apprentice once he reached six moons. This makes NutPaw work harder just for some recognition, but also makes him constantly feel like he isn’t good enough.

ThornDust had been changed to DustThorn. It was just him and his sister, RedWhisker. Their moth died when they were still kits, so he became super protective of his sister. This was an issue when they were apprentices because he constantly wanted to be by her side. His mentor forced him to let RedPaw go since they wouldn’t be able to train properly or grow. It took him a few moons, but he eventually was able to accept that. As warriors, he is known as a big softie who doesn’t really like fighting, regardless his size. He prefers to hunt, but will fight to the end in order to defend his clan.
