the breakup was rough, to say the least. abby was your first everything. your first kiss, your first girlfriend, your first time, and your first everything. letting go of that was the most heartbreaking thing either of you had gone through.

for the first couple of days post-breakup you could hardly eat and sleep. your bed felt so cold and so empty without her next to you. you even made a lame attempt to line some pillows up to make it seem like she was there. and for a moment, it worked. but her warmth wasn't there for you to wrap yourself in. her heartbeat wasn't there to listen to. and her arms weren't there to hold you.

despite the fact that you were no longer together, you still talked. but less than you usually did. so many messages went unsent, so many calls you hesitated calling.

the first time either of you said something to one another was when you texted her about the job you had been wanting for months. she knew how much you wanted to work at the plant nursery down the street from your apartment, even before you split up. so when you got the email after your interview saying that you got the job, your immediate instinct was to tell abby.

"i got the job!" you had texted her.

"thats so amazing, sweet girl." she responded so quickly that it made you think she was anticipating you to text her, "i'm proud of you."

and just like nothing had happened, you were smiling down at your phone, just like you were before you started dating.

but that butterfly feeling in your stomach didn't last long. it fizzled out when you remembered you were no longer with her.

over the course of a few days you chatted about little things. your first day at your new job. abby's dog, alice, catching a squirrel in her backyard. little, minuscule check-ins. nothing too serious.

until a week later.

"want to get coffee?" she texted you one day, while you were busy watering plants in your denim overalls.

it caught you by surprise, to say the least, but you knew it wasn't a date. just two friends getting together for a cup of joe. not romantic. strictly platonic.

no matter how much you wanted to run back into her muscular arms and re-familiarize yourself with her touch, you couldn't. you shouldn't.

"sure." you text her shortly, without the need to ask which coffee shop or what time. while you were dating, you went every week to the same coffee shop at the same time on the same day and ordered the same drinks.

the second you walked through the doors of the coffee shop your nostrils were filled with the scent you missed so much. freshly brewed coffee grounds and warm pastries. the faint sound of chattering from the patrons enjoying their own treats.

and there she was.

sitting at a two-top table, two drinks in front of her. she was already looking at you, as if drinking in your image. even though you were devastated and still a little heartbroken from the previous events of your relationship, you did a good job at finding distractions. which is probably why you don't look quite as miserable as she does.

"hey." she greets you as you sit down across from her, "i um.. i ordered the drink you usually got."

she remembered.

the mug was still warm, so she couldn't have been here long.

"thank you." you nod your head once, "you didn't have to do that."

"its no big deal." she shrugs, taking a sip of her coffee. black coffee, to be exact. you never understood how she liked the bitter taste of it, "how have you been?"

"good." you answer quickly. so quick that she has a hard time believing you. in reality, you were good. but you weren't great. you would never admit to her how you would accidentally cook too much food, because you were used to cooking for two people. you would never admit how many times you've accidentally set the table with two plates instead of one. how you would say 'i'm home!' when you walk through the door, even when nobody was there to listen, "i'm uh.. how about you? how are you?"

"im alright." she says.

but not good. you tell yourself in your head.

for a little while the two of you just chit-chat back and forth, talking about nonsense for half an hour before you notice abby fidgeting. she can't sit still, and you have a gut feeling you know exactly what's wrong.

"sweetheart, i cant keep doing this." she finally breaks, interrupting your rant about how you hate one of your coworkers.

"wait, huh? did i say something wrong?"

she shakes her head, glancing around the coffee shop like she's afraid to make eye contact with you, "we shouldn't have broken up."

your heart falls to the pit of your stomach, "what?"

"i need you more than i thought i did. i miss you."

you stare at her, eyes wide and lips slightly agape. you wanted to hear these words, but you never thought that you ever would, "are you.. are you serious?"

she nods her head, looking back at you.

"baby." she breathes deeply, desperate for your forgiveness, "dont make me beg."

you exhale, your cheeks burning crimson. you had waited so long for one of you to finally say something about the breakup. you waited so long for one of you to speak up about the need for the other.

without another moment of hesitation, you lean across the table, boldly smashing your lips into hers.

she tastes sweet, just as she always had. she was wearing coffee and the mint chapstick you left at her house and she never returned it, because she liked being able to have your taste with her.

she smiles against your lips, baring all her teeth. when you both pull away you can see her little dimples on her cheeks, the skin underneath her freckles a light shade of pink.

"so.." she says, folding her hands together in her bulky lap, "is that a yes?"

Out of all those recruiter x hero/princess/prince of their stories, which one do you think would actually work if things were done differently in their stories? This is for the platonic, family like vibes, and romances

I would hope that my personality pages already answered this question. And I think you've asked me that before as well. But for the new people in the fandom who want my opinion:

Apple Poison and Snow White:

My version of Apple starts off extremely cold, and dare I say charmingly sinister. Snowy probably wouldn't see him as a romantic option, and neither would he.

He's more amused by her than anything and finds her positive nature fascinating.

It could work if one wanted to flirt with the idea, and they would certainly be a more interesting pair than Snow and Prince Florian (Yes, that's the prince's actual name).

But personally, I see him more as a treasured friend and advisor to Snow than anything.

Jack Heart and Alice:

Big brother and little sister duo all the way!!

Though I'm a little concerned about how much ship fanart I see of them. And no, before anyone asks, it's not even adult Alice from the Tim Burton movies! She's her 12-year-old self from the 2d animated movie! Wtf guys???!!

With that out of the way, they would make the cutest sibling duo ever. Jack being the trickster, and Alice being the level-headed yet adventurous sister. So cute!

Malfi (Malfie) and Aurora

I actually like Prince Philip, but if we're looking at this from an alternate dimension, I could totally see Malfi and Aurora getting together.

Granted, in my mind, you would need to de-age Malfi since Aurora is 16, but Malfi, Jack, and Pretty Scar are three recruiters who I can see being in their late teens [17-18 at least].

Aurora's kindhearted, playful nature would bounce off his vain and egocentric one perfectly. And it would even help give Aurora even more depth than she already did.

I had this one idea that after Maleficent dies, Malfi turns back into a raven. Maybe that could factor in why he's so indebted to Maleficent since he doesn't want to give up his "perfect" form. However, he does the right thing and lives in peace knowing that.

Whether you play up the tragic angle, as in, Malfi would give her up for her to be with Prince Philip in the end, or if you actually want them to end up together, it would be an interesting set up.

Eight Foot Joe and Ariel

I've seen this as a ship, and I understand why. It's an adorable one when you think about it: Grumpy guy and sweet girl. We've seen this set up thousands of times, and we can't get enough of it.

But here's the problem I have with this ship: Ariel is canonically 16. Granted, we don't know how old Joe is, but by my personal guess, he seems to be either a stress-aged young adult or a tired grown adult in his early 30s.

I know the recruiters look a lot older than they probably are due to their on-stage actors, but they also serve as our main source of info on the characters they play as.

Not to mention that Joe even calls Ariel "a little girl" when a guest asks him about her, which indicates that he sees her as someone way younger than him.

Personally, I see them having an uncle and niece dynamic.

If we're reimagining the movie with Joe in it, he would probably be known across the sea as a servant of Ursula. I mean, it's kinda hard to hide when you're the only other cecaelian around.

Maybe a young Ariel met him when he was just an octopus before Ursula transformed him. Hence why Ariel can't recognize him years later.

You could do a lot with this idea and play around with Joe being an uncle figure in Ariel's life.

Mr. Dalmatia and...the Dalmatians?

I guess they are the main characters, right?

In all seriousness, Dalma would've been adopted straight away by Pongo and Perdita if he hadn't been accidentally left behind during the escape. He would drink up their parental praise like his favorite juice. Still a brat, though, but a cute one for sure.

Pretty Scar (Mzuri) and Simba

If circumstances were different, I could see Simba, Nala, and Mzuri being friends when they were younger. Mzuri would go along with Scar's rule because she's forced to by relatives. But to redeem herself, she helps Pumbaa and Timon distract the other hyenas when Simba comes back.

If I were to add Mzuri in the story without them knowing each other, I can only really see them settling their differences in the second movie since hyenas are not respected in the Lion King universe at all.

Going by this route, PS would either despise Scar after he cowardly cast the blame towards the hyenas, or PS still clings to Scar even after he died and helps to raise Kovu.

In my mind, Mzuri would hate Scar after his betrayal, so maybe after wandering around for a few years, she catches wind of Zira's plot to overthrow Simba and wants to put a stop to it.

Ms. Hades and Hercules

Aunt and nephew relationship. She'd be reluctant at first to get close to him, but she can't resist his compassionate nature and would give him advice when she could.

I could see her looking after him in secret on earth without Hades knowing. She, alongside Phil, would train him. And MH would have inside knowledge on Hades' plans.

Veil and Quasimodo

In a perfect world where these two weren't manipulated by a horrid man who dared to call himself an archdeacon, they would see each other as siblings.

In the true world, however, if Veil was in the picture, she wouldn't hate Quasimodo, but she would ignore him. The bell ringer himself would be the only one to think of himself and Veil as siblings.

After Frollo dies, they both talk about their experiences and slowly work their way towards a brother - and sister-esque relationship.

Lady Hock, Peter Pan, and Wendy

If Hock was on the winning side, she'd be the best older sister/cool aunt towards Peter, Wendy, and the Lost Boys.

She would be protective of them, read them stories, help Wendy keep her sanity every time she visited, and even take care of Jane.

Faja, Aladdin, and Jazmine

Again, speaking in this hypothetical perfect world, Aladdin, Faja, and Abu would have been best friends. Maybe even siblings.

Faja would have been far away from Jafar's influence and twisted mind games. Her fiestiness and insecurity would still be there, but her trust and security with Aladdin and Abu would overcome her fear.

She'd probably still want to learn magic, but she'd learn on her own terms.

However, in the true movie-verse, she would need to get over her misguided hatred towards Aladdin. He has everything a street rat like her could ever want, of course that would spawn jealousy.

In the end, she would team up with Aladdin in the "Jafar Returns" movie and later become the royal magician after Faja works on herself.

I sat snuffling and sniffling, wiping my eyes so much they had become sore. But I couldn't stop my tears. Oftentimes bringing a cigarette to my lips sucking in the toxins and blowing out the smoke in the hope it would calm me, but I was beyond that now. My mind spiralling down alice's rabbit hole of utter insanity thinking of the worse of everything to come.

"Hey, break time was over a while ago" Vivienne spoke up she had come to the stock room leaning on the wall to the corridor in her tartan jeans and one of her loose white printed shirts, she rested her hand on her hip as she looked me over on my little chair surrounded by boxes of leather and shirts

"Yeah sorry - I'll get" I began wiping my tears and putting my cigarette out on the broken window trying to straighten myself up even if without a gasp I crumbled apart again

"Hey. You're not going out there till you get straight." she says stepping over looming over me "What's the matter?"

"I'm just feeling kinda weird is all" I answered balling the issue in my hand even if it was barely a tissue any more given they had given it to me hours ago,

"You know that's bullshit and so do I. What's the matter?" She asks sitting on a box beside me

"I had a doctor's appointment this morning"

"What did you find out?"

"Well… I found out." I sighed "I'm pregnant" the moment those words left my lips tears flooded down my cheeks and I felt short of breath my heart racing but I kept myself straight wiping my tears as best I could trying to stay strong as this was the first time I had myself uttered those words

"This your first time?"

"Yeah," I nodded

"Who's the father?"

"Who do you think?" I sighed trying to focus on the ceiling, for one to stop my tears, and another to try and prevent the wave of awkwardness between us, I wouldn't feel this way telling Chrisy, or Jordan but Viv… it was different to tell her this.

There was a silence between us for a moment but it wasn't awkward silence more a quiet understanding we made eye contact and it was like we shared a feeling, shared a way, knowing how this is something we now shared.

She got a cigarette box from her pocket giving me one and taking one for herself lighting them both with her zippo, she let out a long drag tapping the first of her ash onto the floor "He won't give a shit. You know that right?"

"Yeah. I know" I nodded

"For all intensive purpose's your doing this on your own. You have to accept that. because he won't help you. not a foot rub, not a held bag, nothing."

"I know that. Malcolm doesn't like kids I'm not gonna change that."

"smarter girl then most." she chuckled as we smoked between us "So many think they can take a man like that and change him. he's a man he's not clay. there stubborn and they'll kick and scream no matter what you try and do" she says "I hope your ready, for whining, complaining, shit being everywhere, not getting any sleep"

"That the baby or Malcolm?"

she chuckled "Both." she says "Sometimes I swear he woke me up more then joe did"

"Not gonna lie Viv that doesn't make me feel better"

"it wasn't meant to. It's hell I'm not gonna sugar coat it for you." she says "its the worse nine months of your life and the only way out of it is the most painful thing on this earth, and from then on you have eighteen years trying desperately not to fuck it all up"

"I don't know if I'm ready for this.."

"You wanna know a secret?" she asks and I nod "Know one is. know one is ever ready to grow a whole life inside them and force it kicking and screaming into the world. It might be something that a man might tell you your body is built for but its never really ready for a baby." she explained "When I had my first kid. I thought my life was over. That… that was just it I'm a mother now that's my life done. Believe me there's nothing you can't do after this. its just a bump in the road of the rest of your life."

"He's gonna be angry."

"Why give a shit what he thinks?" she says "Do you want this baby?"

for a moment I pondered truly, given the time between finding out and this moment I hadn't really thought about an answer to that question

"I don't know" I answered "Does that make me a monster?"

"No. It makes you human. don't let anyone talk you into something, its your choice completely yours no matter what anyone says." she explained finishing her cigarette "I wanted an abortion when I found out I was pregnant"

"You did?"

"Yeah. even got to booking the appointment"

"what stopped you?"

"Because I felt utterly in love, I felt so happy plus I already had one kid so… didn't seem worth it."

"I can't do it."

"Nothing stopping you"

"I just can't. its me."

"Nothing wrong with that." she shrugs "You know where Malcolm was when joe was born?"

"No."

"In the pub. he was out drinking with his friends. I called the flat over and over with a baby in hand he picked up on the fifth try and I told him he had a son. He said cool and hung up. That's what I mean. you're doing this alone you have to accept that"

"I do. thanks Vivienne"

"Its okay. You need anything let me know"

"I will do" I smiled and she gave me a small hug before heading out towards the shop "You think I should tell him?"

"I don't know. I didn't till about six months. mostly because I was waiting to see how long before he'd notice. Had to give up that experiment."

"Fair enough" I chuckled I dried my eyes and heading into the shop.

I was a little nervous but I just did my best not to start crying as I heard the keys in the door and it quickly opened and closed I looked down the corridor seeing Malcolm arrive home throwing his keys on the hook and throwing his jacket on the hook and he came though to the kitchen "Hey"

"Hi" I smiled giving him a kiss

"what do we have in?"

"Oh I'm making dinner tonight"

"Yeah? since when do you cook?"

"today" I shrug

"Alright," he shrugs and he sat at the table telling me about everything as he had a cigarette once dinner was done I brought it to him and we chatted mostly about work stuff while we had dinner, and once dinner was done we went to the living room and cosied up on the sofa he sat up arms on the back of the sofa and I laid with my head in his chest as we cuddled up watching tv.

"Malcolm?"

"Yeah?" he asks

"I have something to tell you." I tried to keep my fear at bay unsure of his reaction

"… Okay. what is it?"

"I uhhh.. I umm… I'm pregnant."

His silence lasted what felt like hours "You're pregnant?"

"Yes."

"How pregnant?"

"eight weeks. doctor told me this morning"

"…okay. Who's the father?"

"Well, you are. Obviously" I told him "How do you feel about that?"

"Well. Not really up to me is it."

"Still."

Your fingers were rhythmically tapping on the wheel as you drove down the road. there was no music it was just a stupid thing you did when you were excited and happy at the same time. After all, you were gonna see Joe. It's not like you hadn't seen him in a long time it's just that you missed him. missed spending actual time with him. He usually came home very late or had to get up early and for two weeks now it felt like you hadn't seen each other at all. you were working at the cafe during the day and barely had any free time since Marie, the only other waitress, quit. But not today, today you had been given a free afternoon and the only way you wanted to spend it was with him. The huge bag of dirty laundry and all the filthy dishes in the sink could wait if it meant you could hug Joe for even a second. You had no idea how you were gonna get in, you had gone to a set before, the only difference was that he had brought you there. This time, it was just you, a random girl asking to get on the set of(you were just now realizing)one of the most successful tv shows of this era. Nobody even knew who you were, and you didn't know anyone else there. Maybe this hadn't been such a great idea.

"Hi" you said shily to the man standing in front of you "I-" you cleared your throat "I'm here to see my boyfriend" you said, as the man completely ignored you. The man scoffed, like that was a bad joke, as if this was the hundredth time he had heard someone say that. He still wasn't looking at you. A blonde middle-aged woman was looking at you on the other side of the fence. She looked nice, like she would give you sweets when you look down kinda nice. "I-I'm sorry who are you?" you asked, trying your best to not sound rude. the woman laughed, a genuine laugh, not at you, but at herself. All Joe does is talk about you" she explained "and besides, he has a framed photo of you in his trailer, I see you basically everyday honey" Well, now you felt dumb. "Ohhhh" you said, realizing "Sorry if I sounded rude" you apologized. "Oh, don't worry. you weren't." she reassured you. "Joe's with me now, if you want I can bring you to him" she offered, enthusiastically. You grinned widely. This woman was an angel sent from god. "That would be amazing. Thank you" you said entering the set, giving the man from before an, "I told you so" look.

"COSTUMES", that's what the sign on the trailer's door that Alice had just opened said. You were feeling a bit nervous, coming here unannounced, but the woman's nice smile as she gestured for you to come in made you immediately feel better. You stepped in and just as you did were overwhelmed by the number of clothes everywhere, it looked like a hurricane had just swept into the room. "I'm sorry about the mess, we're trying on different costumes today and it always ends up like this" she said, picking up some shirts from a chair and throwing them on a pile of clothes on the ground. you smiled"It's not a problem, don't worry" you waved your hand "It's not like my house doesn't look like this on a daily basis" you joked, earning an amused laugh from her. "I think this is the best one this far" A voice came from the end of the trailer. You turned towards it and your mouth fell open as you saw joe walk out of what seemed like a changing room. "What do you think?" he asked, turning towards Alice, but noticing you as he did so. his eyes widened, surprised, and his mouth formed the widest of smiles "Y/n?" You snorted "That's a look" you said sarcastically, eyeing his outfit. He was wearing a pair of ruined jeans and a black t-shirt with the hellfire club logo on it, all of it topped with a leather jacket covered with a sleeveless jean jacket. This was definitely different from how you were used to seeing him. He grinned " What, you don't like it, sweetheart?" he said, tilting his head to the side while walking closer to you. You smiled "Oh no, I do. it's very you" you joked as he placed his hands on your hips. "just wait 'till you see how I look with the wig on" he whispered against your lips before pulling you in for a soft kiss. God, you had missed him. every time he kissed you, you felt like you traveled to another universe, one where unicorns flew in a sky made of rainbows, and this time was no different. you melted into the kiss as you placed your hands on his chest. you smiled as he pulled away, and blushed slightly when you saw Alice standing behind him, having forgotten completely about her presence. "Wait, What wig?" you asked snapping out of your temporary trance. Joe breathed out a laugh as Alice turned around with an amused smile "You gotta see it" she said, before walking hurriedly to another section of the room. You frowned and smiled excitedly at the same time "You didn't tell me you wore a wig" you murmured, stoking joe's cheek "I wanted it to be a surprise" he said, before leaning down to give you one more quick kiss "I missed you" he murmured sweetly. "I missed you too" "here it is" Alice said triumphantly as she emerged with a full bag. Joe smiled at you before turning to Alice, who was already taking the wig out from the bag "now" she said as Joe got in front of her "This is just a trial one" she said, positioning it on his head "it's not the definitive one" she explained as she perfected the positioning "But still" she smiled "It's something" Joe turned towards you and you couldn't help but burst out giggling. "Hot right?" he asked wiggling his eyebrows. "So hot" you Laughed as you walked closer to him. You immediately brought your hands up to his "new hair".it was extraordinary how much it felt like the real ones. You moved some of his fringe around and touched with your fingers how a lock of the black long hair felt. "Wow" you whispered He smiled "You like it?" You grinned widely "I love it" you whispered before standing on your tip toes and kissing him gently.

things that have happened in my yttd au

this is your typical ‘au where nobody dies and they just happen to know eachother’ but all the participants are very close and... i’ve just thought up random scenarios n headcanons to go along with it. (also a lot of these r influenced by .shintsukimistan’s headcanons so please check out their blog if you wanna see good headcanons!) canon ships in this au: joemaru, keiji x kai, rekonao. (we also have hinakanna but im not really sure about shipping children, so we’ll just place it as platonic for now :] ) long post undercut

- q-taro is very very competitive, and he’s confident in his sports ability. so one time, joe challenged q-taro to a round of twister, in which q-taro obviously one, but then kai was like ‘i’d like to have a go.’ q-taro is like very intimidated by kai lol so he’s tryna impress him, and a move calls for kai to put his hands on, let’s say red. q-taro’s leg is in the way. queue kai doing a backbend and landing flawlessly. And keiji was laughing his ass off. like everytime you remind him of this he’ll laugh.

- they were all sleeping over at mishimas house on thanksgiving. unfortunately mishima lives next to a person who’s a spider enthusiast, and a tarantula got loose and ended up right next to gin somehow.  he woke up and screamed, every1 came running in (except for shin he kinda just walked in n then turned around saying ‘nope nope nope’) EVERY1 WAS SCREAMING and kai just *calmly places it in a jar* 

- nao: babe. wake up. please. i need to tell you something. honey. wake u- reko: what is so important that you had to wake me up at 4am on a tuesday nao: i love you - one time q-taro was drunk, and he gets competitive as hell. he was sitting at a table with kai, joe, keiji and alice, going On and On about how he was the strongest. joe dared him 2 arm wrestle keiji and in doing so, keiji got ready and simply just slammed his hand down before joe started counting (it took him off guard) keiji is smug as hell so q-taro is yelling that it wasn’t fair n keijis going ‘haha lol guess you aren’t the strongest’ and q-taro was progressively getting more annoyed

- kai is a stickler for proper posture and one time whacked shin in the back with his ladle thingy (is it called a ladle)... shin got a bruise LOL  - gonna talk about the ships for a little! reko and nao have been dating for 1 yr n 4 months. they met at a cafe (lol classic cafe au ooo) and reko was just entranced with nao’s hair. she went up to go say that (she doesn’t like to just ogle in silence lol) and nao told her she looked really cool. they exchanged numbers after small talk, and nao confessed 2 months later. very healthy relationship, yin to eachothers yang :]

- still not sure about keikai?!? how they’d date n stuff.. they’re both very reserved.. maybe kai wld confess

- ranmaru confessed w a letter! after being talked into it by sara, he wrote a note to joe telling him to meet at their hangout spot after school. joe came n was like ‘hey someone said 2 meet here have u seen them- OH WAIT’ it was a very slow confession.. ranmaru was very nervous. made it clear his feelings for joe were beyond friendship. joe asked him what being romantic w eachother meant, n ranmaru explained. joe didnt realize his feelings for maru were romantic up until that moment, and accepted his confession :D he and ranmaru sat down and joe asked him about what he felt comfy and uncomfy w, and talked about what they shld n shldn’t talk ab. it was sweet. they told the others soon later. 

- speaking of others, i mentioned this before, but best friend squad!! ryoko, joe, sara, anzu, ranmaru and kugie are all friends! :D joe and sara and ryoko were friends prior, and anzu was ryokos friend (they were both in band). after ryoko introduced anzu to joe and sara, ranmaru came along and anzu befriended him, introducing him 2 joe sara n ryoko. then kugie got expelled from her last school and came 2 the school.. sara befriended her quite easily bc she does not take shit from anyone and kugie found that attractive LOL and boom! bsf squad! they hang out often! (i’ll make headcanons ab them later lol)

- hinako and kanna met at school :D they were paired 2gether for a project, n kanna was REALLY scared of her at first. but after like a few minutes she realized hinako wasn’t that scary n actually kinda nice (hinako was exhausted that day, if she wasn’t she probably would’ve tried 2 scare kanna a lil more tmjiwt). kanna and hinako became friends after that, hinako did have a bad case ‘ohh is she pretending to like me?’ but it quickly faded after kanna did kind things out of the blue. they have sleepovers like a lot (n they cuddle platonically :D its just kanna going ‘..hinako’ ‘yes’ ‘can kanna be cradled’ ‘okay’ and then they fall asleep like that)

- joe: hey you two are kinda similar (to ranmaru and shin). you’re both kinda quiet, kinda emo, skinny, kinda good with tech, n ur both relatively the same height *ranmaru and shin look at eachother* ranmaru: yeah except i dont look like this *over exaggeratedly slouches* shin: .___.

Movies I watched (and books I read) this week - 35

As I wait for season 3 of Succession, I thought I’ll re-watch the pilot of Season 1, directed by Adam McKay. Absolutely a great start for the week.

The opening credit theme is a killer!

George Méliès X 2:

✳️✳️✳️  The Méliès Mystery, a fascinating biography of magician, toy-maker, pioneer director, impresario and THE inventor of the cinema. Gave me a whole new appreciation for his work. 9/10

✳️✳️✳️ And of course, Scorsese’s Hugo, which recreates the 7 years in Méliès life, when in desperation he burnt the negatives of all his 700 films, and as he operated a small toy booth at the Gare Montparnasse, penniless and forgotten, (Photo above). This is the setting for the story, transformed into a children fairy tale about an orphan looking for his dead father. A technical tour de force and an ode to early cinema, which eventually turns into a history lesson.

In a similar vain, Sylvain Chomet’s animated story of Jacques Tati’s 1957 unproduced script The illusionist, which was written in an attempt to reconcile with his daughter whom he had abandoned when she was a baby.

Scenes from an Empty Church, an unexpected Covid “Dinner with Andre” from an independent filmmaker Onur Tukel! 

Never heard of it, didn’t know what to expect, watched it for over an hour ... and suddenly it grabbed me, and grabbed hard. It starts as a talkative, philosophical tract with 2 priests trying to deal with the very unusual pandemic that shut down their NYC church. They talk about it, and talk about it, and some of their parishioners enter the conversation and talk about it, but at the end, the anguish and desperation that they feel is being transcended. A bit, at least - 8/10

First watch - Stanley Kubrick’s very first film, the short self-financed boxing documentary Day of the fight (1951)! Done when he was 23, fully cinematic and well-composed, with distinct narration The Killing-style.

So I also re-visited Fellini’s baroque Juliet of the spirits, with the delightful Giulietta Masina. Both Fellini and Allen cast their middle-age wives / girlfriends in the same role. Also, I didn’t realize that Fellini was gay, and his marriage to Masina was partly pro-forma.

✳️✳️✳️ I have to see all of Truffaut‘s films again! His straight-forward, sweet, simple story telling style. First: The Woman Next Door, where the new neighbor is the old, tragic lover. L'amour Toujours.

30 years ago I used to love Green Card, because 1. Romance with Andie MacDowell and 2. Similarities of my marriage of convenience of the same time.

It was actually a rarity, a comedy about immigration policy. I also used to like Peter Weir‘s films.

✳️✳️✳️ La Vie En Rose (2007), a standard French bio of Édith Piaf’s very hard life, full of Marion Cotillard, accordions, and endless grief.

Her music though was better. 3/10

As if there was a pandemic, and you can’t get out of the house. Buñuel’s absurdist The Exterminating Angel, about a party of upper class socialites slowly descending into anarchy after getting stuck in a mansion and not able to leave. Uncomfortably claustrophobic and eerily nihilist. Re-watch.

White, part 2 of Kieślowski’s ‘Trois couleurs’ trilogy. A disappointing revenge fantasy, whereby a hapless Polish hairdresser suffers a humiliating divorce and somehow manages to gain ‘equality’ by implicating his ex-wife in his fake death.

I loved ‘Blue’, but not this ‘Anti-comedy’.

Shirley Jackson X 2:

✳️✳️✳️ Shirley, a “Woman’s film”, made by (nearly all) women, about “brilliant, tortured” writer Shirley Jackson, the author of ‘The Lottery’. Reminiscent of ‘Who’s afraid of Virginia Wolf’, but this younger couple are dull and uninspired. I didn’t find it compelling, except of the final cathartic scene at the edge of the cliff, overlooking the dive below.

‘Let’s pray for a boy. The world is too cruel for girls”.

✳️✳️✳️ Shirley Jackson’s horrifying short story The Lottery (full text here), published in The New Yorker, and featured at the opening scene of ‘Shirley’ above. A story about a small town in New England which follows a long-held tradition of stoning one member of the community every year in a ritual that is accepted by all.

Al Pacino in William Friedkin’s Cruising, a commentary on the S&M leather scene at the end of 70′s NYC. Gay sex & open hustling were normalized, but within a story of a serial killer. Not homophobic, but unconvincing and disappointing. With Paul Sorvino and Joe Spinell.

✳️✳️✳️ Inside Deep Throat, a prurient 2005 documentary Produced by Brian Glazer and narrated by Dennis Hopper. With the typical HBO horrendous quick editing, it claims that Deep Throat is the one event that mainstreamed blow jobs.

America’s reactionary obsession with sex and porn and the politics of religion and morals which fucked it all up. Despicable Alan Dershowitz does his Talking Head shtick.

America is filled with so much miscarriages of justice, gun violence, police abuse, and crime, that it’s hopeless to navigate it.

" You've been avoiding me, haven't you? That's mean... First you kill me, then you ignore me? Ah, come on~ Look at me. " He said, his voice making me shudder as I turned around.

His deep eyes stared into mine as my breathing suddenly shallowed, freezing up with fear as his hands pulled softly at my hair, pulling me into his chest. I gasped softly, the smell of firewood filling my nostrils as he grinned.

" Let's go into the room, murderer. I think it'd be better if you were sitting down for this, hahahaha. "

What? I was-

His laugh was ear piercing- Not like the sweet laughter I was used to. It was mean- chilling to the bone. I quickly opened the door, nearly falling inside as he suddenly disappeared.

Looking around frantically, I turned my head, staring straight at him. With a shriek, I stumbled back, his arms wrapping around me and keeping me in place. My heart jumped to my throat, racing faster and faster as he leaned towards me.

What happened next confirmed the volume.

The door slammed open, the hallucination disappearing with a roar of laughter. I felt myself collapse to the floor, absolutely exhausted as I stared at the floor in front of me.

Reko pet my head softly, whispering to me as she promised that everything would be okay. Alice and Nao stood in the doorway, faces of concern plastered on their visage as they watched me cry in her arms.

Okay, so.. My lovely friend @schizoauthoress issued me a challenge last night in a post they made. I was DYING to leap on this last night - listen, if I get ANY chance to ramble about writing/characters, best believe I’m taking it, but alas, I’d gone to bed. But, today’s a new day.
