Hi. I’m in my early thirties and I spend most of my time tangled in the fuckery that is sustainability, broken systems and climate change. I have degrees in sustainable management and sustainability & systems change (and one in marketing from years ago so I understand this side too). I like to ask uncomfortable questions no one wants to ask because we like to kiss corporation asses, like how business props up systems driving the climate crisis and why those same systems fight change at every turn.
I’ve researched things from corporate greenwashing to why companies are not hiring actual sustainability grads to things like EU funding for circularity (spoiler: it’s not as circular as they claim) and to why endless economic growth is a fantasy we need to let go of (plot twist: there are companies not aiming for it which have made fucking great and profitable business).
I stand for research and a refusal to sugarcoat things. We can’t fix a broken system by asking individuals to make impossible choices. We need to redesign it completely.
Currently also contemplating if I should move into a box under the bridge to be financially able to pursue a PhD in this.
If this sounds like your kind of thing (not the box under the bridge), hop along. It's gonna be a frustrating ride, I suppose.

We're releasing today another bonus clip from behind the Patreon paywall. This originally was produced by Christina as a bonus clip to follow the early release of S5E5; supporters on Patreon at the Companion tier and higher gain access to bonus content that is either excerpted from episodes or prompted by their content every other week. Here is the original description:
"Although the talk I (Christina) had with Paweł in S5E5 about tech and solarpunk narratives ran on the long side, I didn't feel like there was anything I could chop out and use as a bonus clip.  Instead, I decided to think about 100 years of progress and about how useful it can be to think about 100 years of progress.
We can get a lot done in 100 years!
Have a look for a few examples to perhaps inspire you to start thinking about 100 years as a goalpost to aim for in terms of making change. Because those BIG changes that we need to make no longer seem impossible on the scale of 100 years. Which is to say, we don't need to do everything all at once, we just need to start doing things and make reasonably steady progress."

What Does Impact Look Like?
What does it mean to create impact? It's time to look at what it means and how we can tell when we achieve it.
Impact is the ultimate outcome for any social change initiative yet it’s also the most elusive and poorly defined of our evaluation metrics in practice. How do we change this? In this first post in a series, I bring us into the world of understanding impact. Non-profits are in the business of making a positive difference in spaces that are ignored or neglected by other institutions society.…

"hey why are all the barrier garments like linen shirts or chemises or combinations going away?"
"oh we have more washable fabrics now! you don't need to worry about sweat reaching your outer clothing when you can just chuck it in the washing machine!"
"cool!"
[100 years later]
"so uh all of those new washable fabrics are leaching microplastics into our water, and the constant machine-washing wears garments out faster. they're also not really sturdy enough to be mended, so we keep having to throw them out and now the planet is covered in plastic fabric waste that will never break down. also it turns out that the new washable fabrics hold odor-causing bacteria VERY well. so could we get those barrier garments back please?"
"sorry babe linen now costs $100000/yard and since it's been so long without them, nobody knows how to adapt barrier garments to the current styles anyway"
"..."
"maybe try this new $50 undershirt made of Special Sweat-Wicking Plastic Fabric! :) :) :)"

Studying linguistics is actually so wonderful because when you explain youth slang to older professors, instead of complaining about how "your generation can't speak right/ you're butchering the language" they light up and go “really? That’s so wonderful! What an innovative construction! Isn't language wonderful?"

"I think a lot of activism is born from this place of self-sacrifice" - Clover Hogan
"[Force of Nature] is the most incredible team and community I have ever ever had the privilege of working with. And I’m so, so sad to be leaving it. But I know it’s what is right for me and I think as an organisation we have done so much to not only build up this community, but to really ensure that we’re honouring the individual as well. And I think a lot of activism is born from this place of self-sacrifice and I realised last year that I’ve been working from that place for a long time. And it wasn’t sustainable and it wasn’t good for me, but it wasn’t good for us as a team and what we’re trying to achieve in the world. And so I made this decision to step down which I know is the right one. That doesn’t make it any less difficult because this organisation has brought me so much joy and fulfilment and purpose as an activist. But I know it’s right."
Clover Hogan, Founder of Force of Nature on activism burnout and stepping down as Executive Director.
Her words echo similar feelings I have around my activism in sustainable fashion and burnout after COP26 in 2021 that I’m still recovering from.
