What if the reason elves count in 12’s is because they have 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot? (Also Tolkien’s creation myth but whatever.) This could also contribute to the reason why elves are so good at everything. (Besides lifespan and magic.) That sixth digit doesn’t hinder movement, it actually allows for nearly twice as much! People with polydactyly on both hands are also pretty rare, and it’s even rarer that the doctors let them leave the hospital after being born without getting their “deformities” removed.

LOL I started reading the LOTR series and one edition of Fellowship of the Rings has a cover with two large statues that look like the ones at the Moon Nexus in TDP! do you think LOTR was the influence for TDP there, or is that a common fantasy thing?

You're referring to the Argonath? Big monument, two figures in it, marking Gondor's border?

Massive statuary is very much a thing across many Earth cultures, so the general concept of huge stone figures isn't something that Tolkien invented by any means. That said, such figures are a trope in fantasy. They can be a way to show what a given culture found important/dangerous, what their artistic style is like, fashion/cultural details, a quick intro to a historical figure/event, etc etc.

It's very possible that the Argonath were a specific influence for these warding figures at the Nexus! Maybe they're also marking some particular boundary? Or maybe Moonshadow elves just really love high fours. :)))

The house is empty and deprived of all that makes it a home. Deprived of footsteps making the wood creak in the middle of the night as Rayla tried to sneak out, deprived of Runaan’s quiet laugh, deprived of loud chatter over dinner. Deprived of joy.

Perhaps they are out there, somewhere. Perhaps they are safe. But they are not home and so Ethari worries, as he has worried for over a week now.

The light of the moon shines through the window of his and Runaan’s bedroom, filtering onto Runaan’s side of the bed. Once, such a short time ago although already it feels like forever, the moon would have hit Ethari’s husband’s hair, his skin, the runes glowing on his skin. It would have been enticing, and Ethari would have traced the runes with his finger, would have run a hand through long, white hair.

Tonight, however, he sleeps alone, curled in a blanket that doesn’t quite substitute the warmth of a body next to his.

“Goodnight, Runaan,” he whispers, blowing out the candle by his bedside. Somewhere, somehow, he hopes his husband is safe. That he is looking up at the same moon, thinking of him.

Ethari closes his eyes and drifts off into sleep.

“Enough brooding, elf. My patience wears thin,” says a voice, dripping in impatience. “Tell me what you know about this relic, or I will seal your fate.”

Ethari cannot place the voice. Through the haze of his dream, he decides he does not like it.

It is so far, but he can see Runaan, in the distance. He is in chains.

Runaan, he tries to call, but no sound escapes him. Runaan, my dearest, what is happening?

The dream Runaan pays no attention to him and Ethari knows his voice has gone unheard.

It is a dream. It is only a dream.

“You have succeeded,” says dream Runaan.

“Oh, have I?” Replies the voice, a hint of perhaps triumph seeping through. Arrogance.

Ethari tries to turn, to see the relic, to get a closer look at the owner of the voice, of Runaan, of anything outside of this blurred haze. He cannot move.

“That mirror? You have found something worse than death.”

“Then tell me: what is it?” Anger seeps into the voice.

“I will never help you,” replies dream Runaan.

What is going on?

“Then you are of no use to me.”

Something terrible is happening, of that Ethari is sure.

There is a glowing purple light. A chant — dark magic. No.

No. No, no.

Runaan is screaming. No, no, it’s just a dream, simply a dream, he’s not really screaming, he’s not really being tortured. No, no.

Runaan is screaming and Ethari cannot move, trapped and forced to watch his agony.

The screaming stops and Runaan is gone.

No.

“No!” Ethari cries, and wakes up with a gasp. No, no, not Runaan.

The next thing Ethari knows, he’s tossed on his clothes and he is sprinting to the flower pool. He is guided through the streets by muscle memory alone.

It was just a dream.

It was just a dream.

Just a dream.

Wasn’t it?

He stops short of the edge of the water, eyes desperately searching for his husband’s flower as dawn breaks over the pool.

If he wakes the whole village up with his scream, he doesn’t care.

Runaan isn’t coming home.

Runaan is gone.

Tolkien Elven Linguistics for Laurelion/Elarion

Digging up my old TDP/Tolkien posts to tag them properly if I'm going to write ANOTHER one and found my initial mention of Laurelion and Laurelin. I'm still personally in favor of interpreting these names through the lens of their Latin roots, but there's that one person who translated Elarion as "Heir of the Stars" in Sindarin and I wanted to see how Laurelion came out, given the same -ion suffix... so I dug up an internet "every language Tolkien made up" dictionary and took a look.

Elarion

Obviously I have to check the reddit rando's work first: yes, el is "star" in basically every elven language (for reasons), and -ion is a suffix that consistently means "son of" or "descendant," used mostly in patronymics, and occasionally as "place of" in naming locations. But that's skipping out on that ar in the middle—ar means "lord" or "noble," particularly as a prefix (Aragorn). There's a similar three-part name in Pelargir, from pel (pen or enclosure), ar, and cir (ships, with the consonant mutation common to Sindarin), so sandwiching ar seems to be valid. It would theoretically get you "child/place of the star-lord," though I think it would be more likely to construct that as arelion, with elarion being "noble child/heir of the star," or if you want the place -ion instead of the person -ion, maybe something like "palace of the star." I don't actually know any grammar, here... but I think the plural form of el is eli, so elar/arel would be singular.

Laurelion

This is a bit simpler, because as in Laurelin (literally "golden song"), laure is just straight-up "gold" in every elven variant. But Laurelin breaks down into laure and lin (song), and it's pretty consistent across all the -ion instances that that if -lion or -rion appear, it's because of being combined with a word finishing in -l or -r. For example, Eldarion from eldar and -ion for "son of the elves star-folk," or Calion from cala/cale and -ion for "son of light." So I don't think we can jump straight to "golden child/heir," and we wouldn't want to... because el means "star." I'm a little surprised Tolkien didn't actually go to laurel as "golden star" but I think he may have been more of a silver stars kinda guy. Anyway, Laurelion could be "child/heir of the golden star."

A Note on El

El does mean "star," but it's specifically an archaic or poetic way of saying it, coming from a root el meaning effectively "lo!" or "behold!" Even in Quenya, the more common form was elen, and Sindarin used gil as the common term for "star" (though retained the archaic el as well). So Laurelion and Elarion both indicate that older word, which is a big HMMMM.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I think this is like 300% more thought than the writers put into this, and while it does seem highly likely there are some real Tolkien nerds among them... most of the fantasy words in TDP are very Latin-based in a pretty heavy-handed manner. So it seems more likely to me that Elarion and Laurelion are meant to be read with their Latin roots, respectively "joy" and... probably "victory" or whatever, "laurel" isn't a word we actually know the root of beyond referring to the laurel tree and leaves thereof, but the association is strong enough that it might as well be a translation.

(Probably worth noting that Tolkien was also fluent in Latin.)

17. the thing in canon that everyone loves and that you also love

Rayla being a badass. A genuinely skilled fighter, knower of battle tactics. She can track, she can attack and defend, she can stealth, she can trick and coordinate. And it's not a cutesy whoopsy doopsy sort of combat with terrible stances and heaving bosoms and uncertain gazes seeking help from a man for the final blow. There is no male gaze on Rayla. She's entirely capable and she proves it repeatedly.

The moment I saw her spiral cut like a salad shooter out of the cloth Callum pulled over her head, way back in S1E2, I knew I'd like this show. Rayla has been a badass ever since!

21. a fandom you're not active in anymore but that you still really like

I feel like Tolkien fits here. I was deep into it when I found TDP and I just migrated kinda overnight. I don't feel I'm at a place where I can wade back into all the fun Sindarin and worldbuilding stuff I was doing back then, but I always love to see all kinds of LotR and Hobbit stuff on my dash!

Aaron and Justin planned out at least 5,000 years of history prior to the current timeline of the show, have a story following the ancestor of a current character being shaped for some form of media, have announced that they will be releasing books on the lore, and divided future seasons into three omnibuses (each season is called a “book”, so this term seems fitting) possibly occurring at different points in the future. I swear to god, they’re only a set of original languages and an expansive theological mythos away from reaching Tolkien’s level of world building. They’re such epic nerds and I fucking love them for it!
