📚 August Reading Round-Up 📚
I'm very happy that I was able to read (and finish) quite a few books this month! My reading selection was also perhaps a bit more varied, with a non-fiction book thrown in. I began reading the Tea Princess Chronicles by Casey Blair (very good, so lovely), continued with the next volume of Spy x Family, and read books newly published as well as older.
- The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Ann Older (very good, loved the worldbuilding, interesting plot)
- Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey (really enjoyed it, definitely cried a bit toward the end, a lot of interesting tropes and themes, good worldbuilding, liked how many of the themes were handled)
- Batman: Wayne Family Adventures Volume One by Payne and Starbite (lovely, so happy I get to have a physical copy, can't wait for volume two)
- A Dance with the Fae Prince by Elise Kova (liked it a lot, loved the themes and the romance, good character growth)
- Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann (re-read, well-written, interesting and illuminating, difficult subject matter, felt the narration treated the subject material well for the most part, interested in seeing the movie adaptation)
- A Coup of Tea by Casey Blair (amazing, lovely, binged it in almost one sitting, loved the themes and characters and how it was all put together, as well as the focus on tea, diverse in a good and welcoming way)
- The Physicians of Vilnoc by Lois McMaster Bujold (loved it, tough subject matter however, Penric and Desdemona as lovely as always, enjoyed the philosophical themes and questions)
- Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie (great, loved it, missed Seivarden a bit though, great themes and characters, made me want to re-read the first book)
- Spy x Family Volume 6 by Tatsuya Endo (Cute, funny, engrossing, more of a tight one-arc story which I liked, has the famous lullaby Yor and Loid scene, Nightfall was hilarious, a key moment finally occurred!)
- Tea Set and Match by Casey Blair (loved it, a lot of communication, loved the themes and how it was handled, cathartic, interesting understanding of the MC's privilege (and how she can use it)
- The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (re-read, interesting, the narration was amazing and really sold the story, liked the back half of the book more, some very dry and funny and witty parts, wanted more things to be fixed/dealt with, Maia's internalized racism is never really questioned by him)
- Outlaw Mage by KS Villoso (had backed the Kickstarter, very good, read it in a few sittings, enjoyed the characters and themes, tried to figure out how the book connected to the other series in that world, enjoyable and thought-provoking, not too subtle, want to know what happens next)

I need fanart!!!
So I've been reading some cozy fantasy stories lately, re-reading Legends & Lattes, enjoying You Can't Spell Treason Without Tea and its sequel. Just today I picked up a similar ebook called A Coup of Tea, the first in the Tea Princess Chronicles.
While I'm thankful that the detailed and specific use of tea and historical clothing are mostly described in terms I can understand, I'm having trouble picturing the characters and their outfits.
Not just their outfits but... and this is embarrassing to admit, but the characters themselves. I feel bad knowing I might not be imagining them even as the earth-equivalent um races/phenotypes they're intended to be. ><
Now I would usually solve this issue by referencing fanart but there doesn't seem to be any??!?! Three books in this series have been released but searching for 'a coup of tea fanart' and 'tea princess chronicles fanart' on google and on tumblr, or checking the author Casey Blair's twitter or wordpress, none of these have revealed a single piece of fan art?!?
So this is a plea! A request, asked on my knees, does anyone know where I can find fanart of this book - particularly Miyara in her green formal outfit? Lorwyn and Risteri would also be helpful.

I'm planning on beginning to post one of my books in its entirety on my website and put up a link for each chapter on Tumblr each week. The book is Cast Out. Are you interested in being tagged on this?
Also, how are you doing? Sorry I disappeared for a couple months! Depression and holidays kicked my ass.

Ooh! Re: book recs for the new year, do you have any lesser known fantasy (or sci fi tbh) recommendations? Or better known but pre-2010s books - I've kind of devoured a lot of the modern stuff, and we have a shockingly similar taste in books
Ooh, excellent! I never actually know what's lesser known? So I'm going with things I haven't seen a lot of internet buzz about, with a decent amount of indie and self-pub. A lot of it will be fantasy romance, but I'll try for a variety!
The Devotion of Delflenor by R. Cooper (I'm going to keep trying until someone reads this piney piney lady knights book, damn it)
The Tea Princess Chronicles by Casey Blair
Salt Magic, Skin Magic by Lee Welch (a lot of people were talking about Seducing the Sorcerer by the same author a year or so ago, but I like this one better!)
Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and then if you like the concept behind that, try the Steerswoman books by Rosemary Kirstein
Ariah by B.R. Sanders is very worldbuildy and cool
Sharon Shinn flies under the radar sometimes but tends to have cool worldbuilding concepts, I'm midway through the Elemental Blessings series and really enjoying it
Felicia Davin's Gardener's Hand trilogy is great, and Davin now has a historical fantasy romance(/verging on erotica in places) epistolary series coming out, of which I've read the first, The Scandalous Letters of V and J is very fun.
I've only read the first of Effie Calvin's Ieflaria series of largely sapphic fantasy romance, but I had fun with that one!
I like Amy Rae Durreson, who usually writes m/m fantasy romance, try Reawakening on for size but be warned the second book has a plague in it
If you like middle grade, I really like Merrie Haskell's fairy tale retellings and her short stories for older readers too, she's very Robin McKinley-esque
(Speaking of, if you haven't read Robin McKinley, please do, any of her you can get your hands on but particularly her fairy tales and Chalice)
Three Princes by Ramona Wheeler is one I don't remember a lot about but the concept is great, it's the kind of alternate history I wish more people were writing instead of 18,000 "The Nazis/Confederates Won" books (and similarly, P. Djeli Clark's Dead Djinn books, though those have a much bigger dose of fantasy)
CJ Cherryh can sometimes be a bit dense for my mood, but I've read the first three books in her series that starts with Foreigner and there is SO much fun politics and worldbuilding. (I haven't read fantasy from her, just sci fi, sorry, almost posted this without making that clear, this is very much sci fi!)
Okay, that's what I've got for this exact second! I'm on a different floor from the bookshelf that has the most of my older fantasy on it, so there's not quite as much of that as intended, but it's what I've got in me!

Okay, I really need to talk about some of the absolute clownery that was Hyde and Hilda's first meeting with each other.
Again, keeping the lore and whatnot brief here , Hyde was guided to Hilda's manor and base of operations by Kuon, Linne's brother and fellow immortal, for what I will summarize as Final Boss Reasons™. Hyde, being given vague implications that Linne might be in harm's way at said manor, immediately runs over and quickly realizes Kuon was trying to lead him into a trap. He tries to leave, only to be stopped by Hilda.
Hyde then proceeds to fumble every single ball he's tossed in his attempt to escape.
He immediately stammers out that he totally wasn't sneaking around the manor. That he totally wasn't talking about Amnesia while thinking aloud. That he absolutely isn't spying on them or anything.
Obviously Hilda doesn't not buy this, and immediately outs Hyde as an In-Birth by observing his vessel, the special spiritual thingy that shows your EXS powers which is located around the chest. Hyde tries to do the same... only to realize he's staring directly into Hilda's massive cleavage and reacts as any innocent high school boy would. Hilda immediately jumps on this and proceeds to give Hyde massive cringe damage by prancing (canonically worded this way) around him, lifting her skirt, twirling about like a Disney princess, and otherwise destroying Hyde's sanity even further before revealing herself as the leader of Amnesia.
She then invites Hyde inside her base to chat over tea and snacks.
Hyde, having functioning brain cells, understandably refuses. At least until Hilda threatens to make a scene. Like, she legit threatened to scream, cry, call security, and make a fuss on camera to blackmail Hyde. And so Hyde reluctantly follows Hilda to her penthouse suite against his will.
There's a few more shenanigans that happen after Hyde's inside the building, but I'll let you all just read through Chronicle Mode to learn the details. And those details are even further clownery.

Cozy Fantasy
Travis Baldree introduced me to a subgenre I never knew I needed: cozy fantasy. Low-stakes stories set in mild locations that end more or less happily.
Legends & Lattes is Travis's book. I first heard about it on twitter and between the premise and the cover art I preordered it, read it when it was out, and fell in love. It's about an orc barbarian lady named Viv who retires from adventuring to open a coffee shop and the misadventures (and love) that ensue as she tries to find her way in a new and unknown market. Helping her out are Tandri, a succubus who excels as manager (and stealing Viv's heart); Thimble, a ratkin culinary genius; and Cal, a faux-grouchy hob who works wonders with wood. The stakes are low, but the fun is not. A++ highly recommend AND there's a second book coming out that's a prequel to this one and features a foul-mouthed ratkin.
House Witch by Delemhach is about a young man whose magic centers on hearth & home. He sets himself up in the royal kitchen expecting to keep a low profile, but soon finds himself in far over his head, saving lives, and cooking the most incredible meals anyone's ever eaten. It's broken into three books, but each picks up right where the last left off, so it could have worked as one. The characters are well done, the drama builds at a steady pace, and while a lot of serious stuff happens it never really loses its sense of fun. There are a couple of places where the author gets overly-enamored of puns and getting a little too silly, but it's still a good story.
Coffee, Milk, and Spider Silk by Coyote JM Edwards is a short story and TBH it kinda suffers from that. The premise features a drider retiring from guard service to open a coffee shop. I've seen some unfavorable comparisons to L&L but while the author acknowledges it as an influence, it's still its own thing. I just wish there'd been more time to expand on the characters. The emo teen dryad with accident-caused disabilities is a whole story on her own, and I would have liked to know more about the single mom minotaur who hides her anxiety behind a wall of cheerfulness. Even the protagonist Gwen feels a little hastily sketched. It's still a fun, easy read, but I feel like it needs more. More stories set here or a future expansion to a full-length novel.
The Tea Princess Chronicles by Casey Blair are good. Some heavy plotting, but still light enough to qualify. They center on a princess who chooses to run away from her family rather than get shoved into a convenient box of their choosing. She comes to rest in a tea shop and settles in to study to become a tea master. Lots of drama interferes, of course, and there are smugglers to catch, a lost people to rescue, and a kingdom to save. There are secondary trans characters and secondary queer romances as well.
The Bookshop & the Barbarian by Morgan Stang was not written for me. I only got a few pages in before giving up in frustration, though I may try again later. The premise should be fun: woman on the run sets up shop in a cozy little bookstore and then hires a barbarian woman to help drive out the encroaching goblins. It's low stakes, funny, and has a sapphic romance, but for me it was trying way too hard to sound clever. I prefer straightforward storytelling to meandering narratives that include snide commentaries on everything. That's a me thing, though, and might suit other readers better.
Can't Spell Treason without Tea by Rebecca Thorne is another good sapphic romance about a guard for an evil queen who runs away to the borderlands and opens a tea/book shop with her head-of-the-mage-guild girlfriend. Lots of good plotty stuff and maybe more angst than your average fluff, but it's fun and features a cozy setting with locals who are eager to help. Should be first in a series, since the queen is definitely not going to let them get away with this.
I'm still watching for more and if anyone wants to add to the list feel free.
Also, now that I've delved into some cozy fantasy, I'd love to see more cozy scifi. Coffee shop/bookstore AUs are a delight.

Possibly a story prompt...
I've had this idea in my head all day and I needed somewhere to put it, then I remembered that Tumblr exists....
So story is based off of SVSSS and MLC and BOY but lesbian.
also bad at naming especially in Mandarin(I am not a native speaker) but I really like C-dramas and Danmeis and also wuxia/xianxia sort of things.
Title: The Plum Chronicles
Synopsis: Emma Walker, a lively teenager from southeast England, unexpectedly finds herself transported to a xianxia wuxia world. Here, she encounters Chen Wei, a skilled martial artist initially misunderstood as the antagonist of the realm. As they face pursuit, Chen Wei becomes Emma's martial arts master, and a genuine friendship forms.
However, a true villain, Li Kun, emerges, framing Chen Wei and forcing Emma to rid herself of all emotions to confront the threat. Upon returning to her world, she discovers she has been in a coma for years, retaining her fighting skills but losing her powers. Misunderstood by her parents, Emma moves in with a diverse group of roommates – a streamer, an office worker, and a pet store employee.
Working at a nearby cafe, Emma strives to save money to complete her college qualifications. She becomes a translator for wuxia xianxia works online, showcasing her exceptional Mandarin skills. Accidentally sent back to the xianxia world with her roommates, Emma discovers a way to regain her emotions but loses her overpowering abilities in the process.
Now, with extreme emotions and reduced strength, Emma relies on her roommates' protection. Returning to their world, Emma exhibits newfound bravery. With enough money for college, a bus crash thrusts her into a cave, prompting a revelation on how to balance emotions and power.
On her journey, Emma encounters a potential lover, Li Xiu, faces former enemies, and reunites with her master, Chen Xun. A chance encounter at the tea house, where Li Kun is killed by an unknown assailant who seems like Chen Wei, leaves them puzzled. Chen Wei denies involvement, and the mystery deepens.

I don't know, I feel like maybe I should stop posting snippets. People say they're too long and the amount of words overwhelms them. But I don't like just posting a paragraph. I don't write to have pretty sentences and paragraphs. I write to tell a story. And I don't tell a story in one paragraph. I'm a novelist.
Just feeling a little discouraged, because if people won't read a thousand words, they definitely won't read 100,000.
Anyway, if you have any thoughts about this, let me know.

Hi Nell!! Best recs for cozy reads?
Hello! It is starting to be autumn here in the northern hemisphere, so that does indeed make it the perfect time to read some cozy things! I will try to do a bit of a genre mix here.
To start, autumn and winter is the perfect time to read some cozy mysteries. I just finished The Three Dahlias by Katy Watson recently, and I've also liked The Appeal by Janice Hallett in the recent past.
Romances on the whole tent to be fairly cozy, of course. If you're a fan of historicals, Mary Balogh is one of my cozy authors for sure, and the frequently-recced-on-tumblr Courtney Milan really is also wonderful, try The Duke Who Didn't for some great vibes. For contemporaries, The Fiancee Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur and The Neighbor Favor by Kristina Forest are ones I enjoyed that are sweet and kind ways to spend an afternoon.
And then there's cozy SFF, my beloved! To start, I keep reccing The Tea Princess Chronicles by Casey Blair and more people should take me up on them, they are truly the coziest of vibes. T. Kingfisher's fantasy romances, particularly the paladin series, are popular in fantasy romance for a reason. The Devotion of Delflenor, by R. Cooper, is another one I wish more people would take me up on when I repeatedly rec it (if you are in the center of the Venn diagram of "loved E/R at the 2013-2014 fandom peak" and "loved Tamora Pierce growing up," I suspect you will be a fan). Becky Chambers is well known for extremely cozy sci fi.
Hopefully there's a book or two that catches your fancy in there!

I finally learned how to romanticize winter and she became my fav seanson, so here are my few tips 🤍
❄️ Listen to the soundtrack of Swan lake & the Nutcracker (trust me on that!), make a dreamy winter playlist to feel like an ice princess,
❄️ Take a long walks (when it's not too freezing),
❄️ rewatch Black Swan, Barbie and the Swan lake, Barbie and the Nutcracker & The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,
❄️ refresh your wardrobe & make-up: wear more pastels, especially blues, pearl white & light pink! As for make-up, pink lipgloss 💋,
❄️ make some gingerbreads,
❄️ drink a chamomile & mint hot tea,
❄️ moistruize all of your skin, not just your face,
❄️ light up your candles & read some fairy tales,
❄️ if you can, visit an opera, a theater, a ballet or a museum, be close to the art.
i hope you enjoy 🤍

just a little steamy moment but you’ll just have to wait for the next chapter for the hotter stuff!
“ I don’t think I can sleep Eddie, I’m too wired.”  You said with a yawn, leaning back on the dining room table.
“I can make you some tea, maybe something stronger? You need to rest, baby.”
Maybe it’s the near death experience, the way he looks in those pants, or the fact you haven’t been able to stop thinking about the first time his teeth met your skin, whatever the reason may be, you stand to your feet.
“So why don’t you tire me out?” You asked, slipping your own underwear off this time.
“That I can do.” Eddie smirked and reached for the offered underwear, but you held it just out of reach.
“I think I wanna make you work for it. So if you want me, you’re gonna have to catch me.” You explained with a cheeky smile.
“You do realize this is my house and I’m a vampire right? I am literally the high ground, angel.”
“I guess I’ll have to play by myself then.” You said, moving to the opposite end of the table before slipping your own fingers into yourself.  Eddie looks on, eyes dark, hands gripping the end of the table as you let out a small whimper of satisfaction when you find that sweet spot without his assistance.
“Come here baby, come to Eddie.” He whispers, rubbing at his cock over his pants in rhythm with your own inner pleasure but you shake your head.
“You’re the one who said you’d have me soaking wet all over your floors. Or was that a one time deal?”  You slid your dripping fingers out of yourself, holding them to him.  He’s in front of you before you can say another word, guiding your wet fingers into his mouth, gently sucking on them.
One of the pads of your finger catches on his fangs, pricking it. A tiny bead of your blood bubbles on his lips, and he growls when you pull your finger back.
“Let me taste you, princess.”
You take a few steps back, squeezing your finger and a little drop of blood falls to the floor with every step you take.
“You want me? Come and get me.”
Eddie laughed darkly, slipping off his jacket.
“Then be a good girl and run.”
