The Little Prince, The Rose, & The Aviator
AKA We just got confirmation that Oscar's main allusion is in fact The Little Prince so I wanted to gather all evidence that supports it in show thus far.
cross-posted from twitter
Tumblr media
A brief summary for those who aren't familiar:
The Little Prince is a story about a young boy that travels to many worlds & meets many people. It is told out of chronological order from the perspective of an airplane pilot that the prince meets close to the end of his journey.
It explores themes around childhood and growing up, love, loss, friendship, loneliness, and hope, among other things. All ideas very prevalent in RWBY.
Tumblr media
Part 1: The Little Prince
The first theme I want to touch on is that struggle of trying not to lose yourself as you grow up.
"Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is exhausting for children to have to provide explanations over and over again."
Oscar is the youngest of the group, and yet he is one of the characters most often shown trying to reason with the adults in the room.
Tumblr media
Yes, we've mainly seen it with Hazel, Ironwood, and Oz... but while the rest of RWBYJNR are also 'just kids', he spends so much energy trying to reason with them and mediate conflicts there as well. All while still being the youngest of the bunch.
Tumblr media
Another way this shows itself is in Oscar's resistance to merging with Oz. The merge is a very clear metaphor for how the people you meet and the things you experience can often change you. And how, when you're a kid, it all feels like its completely out of your control.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the hoverbike scene, I want to shift to a different part of The Little Prince. The infamous moment with the fox and what it is to be 'tamed'. To be tamed is to create ties with others. To become important to them and for them to be important to you.
Tumblr media
When Oscar is having a talk with Oz in v8 about how he finally felt like himself, the person he wanted to be, and felt like he was finally "part of the team"... There is a fox plushie lying on the ground as he passes by.
Tumblr media
But we see that Oscar was right to feel this way later on.
Because just as he was "only a little boy like a hundred thousand other little boys" when he first met everyone... he had since been tamed, and tamed his friends in turn. And they fought tooth and nail to bring him back when he was captured by Salem.
Tumblr media
Part 2: The Aviator & the Rose
In RWBY, most characters have a main allusion that is central to their arc and then secondary allusions for what roles they fill in relation to other characters. (Ex. Yang's main allusion is Goldilocks, but when thrown into the plot, she also becomes the Beauty to Blake's Beast, just as Blake was once the Beauty to Adam's Beast).
If we apply that metric to other characters here, we know that Ozpin's main allusion is The Wizard of Oz and Ruby is Little Red Riding Hood... so when placed within Oscar's story structure of The Little Prince, they become The Aviator and The (Ruby) Rose, respectively.
Tumblr media
The aviator is a man that struggles to hold onto his childlike wonder. He tries, but he lives in a world of grown-ups so it becomes difficult with time. The little prince - much like Oscar with Ozpin - helps him remember some of the things that he's forgotten.
When the little prince meets him, the aviator is grumbly after crash landing his plane in the desert & is trying to fix it before he runs out of water.
Funny then, that when Oscar is crash landing a plane it is Oz that instructs him on how to do it.
Tumblr media
When the aviator explains his circumstances, the prince laughs and exclaims that he "fell from the sky too". Which is an interesting tie in to the canon RWBY fairytale mentioned in Before the Fall, The Boy Who Fell From The Sky...
Tumblr media
...as well as another fairytale we've seen mentioned in the show proper: The Girl Who Fell Through The World. A tale that was first talked about by Oscar, later expanded upon by Ozpin, and finally lived by Ruby Rose herself. (Yes her team also experienced it but it's very strongly emphasized Ruby and Alyx were paralleling each other in ways the others were not).
One thing about the little prince and the aviator is that by the end of their journey when it's time to say farewell, it's quite clear they've tamed each other as well. So much time spent by the pilot wishing to fix his plane and get out of the desert, but when it's finally time to say farewell, he does not want to go. This is not something we've gotten in show yet, but I'm willing to guess is going to be the basis for when the war is won and Oz is finally set free. Leaving the two of them to finally have to say goodbye.
And I realized I couldn't bear the thought of never hearing that laugh again. For me it was like a spring of resh water in the desert. "Little fellow, I want to hear you laugh again..."
Moving onto the Rose.
In the story, the little prince is enamored by her as soon as he sees her for the first time. As he gets to know her, she is described as many things. Some that fit Ruby well (miraculous, naïve) and some that she subverts (vain, self-centered).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby might not be caught up on physical appearance, but she is convinced that she's the only one in all the world that can do what she has to do. It's a childish way of looking at things, and to believe you can't accept help from others is - in its own way - selfish.
Tumblr media
In the book, the rose asks the little prince to tend to her. She's very needy with her demands and while the prince loves her dearly, it is a strained relationship. In RWBY, Oscar sees Ruby wilting very early on and decides to tend to her without waiting for her to ask. Of which we have... SO MANY EXAMPLES AND I DON'T HAVE A HIGH ENOUGH IMAGE LIMIT TO POST THEM ALL SO YOU GET 2.
Not pictured here, but still worthy of note: Oscar mediating when Ruby is being undermined in v8, Oscar talking the responsibility of telling Ironwood the truth in V7, the "food always makes me feel better" / "I made you a casserole because you were sad" scenes. The List Goes On.
Tumblr media
Part 3: Other Easter Eggs & Evidence
There are also other fun little pieces that drive home just how much these characters allude to the book as well as the inspiration it's had on the show in general.
The first thing the little prince asks the aviator for is a drawing of a sheep that he can take home with him so that it can eat up the sprouts of baobab trees before they overgrow his entire planet and destroy it (and his rose) in the process...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tree in the Ever After has maple leaves, but the shape of its trunk is very clearly not a maple. When compared to these illustrations, it seems to have pulled inspiration from baobabs... and what does the tree in the Ever After do?
Its roots consume the rose.
Tumblr media
One of the lessons that's brought up repeatedly in the book is that:
"One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”
This is brought up in a few different ways:
The little prince left his rose back home, so when he looks to the night sky, separated from her, he says:
"The stars are beautiful because of a flower you don’t see . . ."
When Ruby is in the Ever After, with no one to tend to her, she is in a town filled with paper stars.
Tumblr media
It is brought up again in reference to the desert, which we have a wonderful tie-in now thanks to the animatic shared at RTX recently:
“What makes the desert beautiful,” the little prince said, “is that it hides a well somewhere . . .”
Tumblr media
And again by the aviator in reference to the little prince himself.
What makes the little prince special is his loyalty to a flower. Ruby Rose, who inspired Oscar to keep fighting, who reminded him he was brave, and who's mission he has worn on his literal shoulders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two other lines in that passage I've highlighted I also want to mention.
"As the little prince was falling asleep, I picked him up in my arms, and started walking again. I was moved. It was as if I was carrying a fragile treasure."
This line about the little prince being a treasure (treasure is an rg song truthers rise up 🙌)
And the emphasis on lamps being symbolic of the Little Prince himself which... we've seen for Oscar A LOT.
"What moves me so deeply about this sleeping little prince is his loyalty to a flower - the image of a rose shining within him like the flame within a lamp, even when he's asleep... (...) Lamps must be protected: A gust of wind can blow them out..."
Tumblr media
Also Ruby has been referred to as a "spark" by Oz before and when Oscar is worrying over Ruby at Brunswick farms, Maria tells him to "keep that fire fed" which is exactly what lamp lighters do. Just very deliberate use of that imagery here.
It ALSO ties into earlier in the novel where, among the little prince's many travels meeting plenty of confusing adults he doesn't understand, he encounters a lamplighter. And of all those that confused him, he found he could at least relate to this one and see value in his work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also a matter of how the prince's first appearance is at sunrise:
Tumblr media
That he is cited to live on a planet "scarcely bigger than himself" and "being in need of a friend". How we see Oscar very alone on his farm back in Mistral, just like the prince, only tending to his daily chores by himself, we never even see his aunt.
Tumblr media
And while there are a few other bits and pieces i'm surely forgetting, the last big one I want to talk about is how both the beginning and end of the book start with a venomous snake.
The aviator shows us a drawing of a boa constrictor eating a wild beast...
Tumblr media
...versus Oscar's first appearance coming immediately after he wakes from a nightmare of Tyrian, a venomous scorpion faunus, being sent to capture his rose.
Tumblr media
And the story ends with the little prince in a desert getting bit by a venomous snake that sends him back to his rose and away from the aviator... thank goodness RWBY loves to subvert its fairytale origins, amiright?
Tumblr media
"(The little prince) fell gently the way a tree falls, there wasn't even a sound..."
tl;dr Oscar is for sure The Little Prince, Ruby has always been his rose, RG canon, Tryian vs. Oscar in the desert real and #GREENLIGHTVOLUME10 SO WE CAN SEE IT HAPPEN ALREADY >:OOOO
Thank you for reading 💕

It would've been very cute if the dinner party in V7 had everybody dressed up. A fun idea I had was that Team RWBYJNR show up in their prom dresses (and yes, Jaune has to be in his white dress or else 🔪).
Ofc the dresses would need to be slightly modified because the old ones they used were very basic and easy to throw on the models. Yang's white dress needs extra work done on it.
Oscar gets his own cute lil outfit, maybe something that matches Ruby's red dress.
Ironwood shows up in maybe a black and navy blue suit, and Penny wears a formal but aesthetically pleasing green and white dress. Winter wears something fancy and brings back her cold sleeves from V3.

Oscar: Thanks for coming to today's meeting Teams RWBY & JNR- I mean, guys.
Jaune: No problem man, we needed a break from patrolling in the cold anyways.
RWBYJNR mumbles in agreement.
Yang: What's the meeting about, anyways?
Weiss: I agree, why are we here?
Oscar: Good questions, I was just getting to that. See, there's a reincarnation of Ozma that-" *RWBYJNR groan in despair* "that wants to help you guys in using your Semblances better."
Jaune, groaning: "Fine, lets hear him out..."
Oscar: "Thank you Jaune, but be warned. He's a little... Intense."
Ozymodo: "Thank you for lending control of your body Oscar. Now listen up maggots! Names Ozymodo, and i'll be giving what you all might call tough love."
Blake: Wait. Ozymodo? Like the leader of the First Faunus Uprising Ozymodo?
Ozymodo: "The one and the same Ms. Belladonna. Now, all of you are frankly quite terrible at using your Semblances."
RWBYJNR start to get upset at the insult.
Ozymodo: "That's why i'll be offering some... Guidance, as Ozpin puts it, today. If you all want to be the best Huntsmen you all can be, I suggest listening to what I have to say."
Ozymodo: "Ruby, since you're considered the leader, you're up first. Ruby, in general, faster than your opponent - be they Human or Grimm. While you may wield a long range weapon, that doesn't mean you should sit back and snipe all day long. Use your speed to get into enemy blindspots and attack from there. Or, taking a page from my former right hand woman, may she rest in peace, use the blade of your scythe and drag who or whatever you're fighting by the neck until their head comes off."
Ozymodo: "Schnee, you're up next. While summoning defeated enemies is a major part of your semblance, that doesn't mean you should neglect the rest of it. Use your Gravity & Speed glyphs to trip up your opponent and keep the off balance. Never let up on the pressure, and victory will be yours."
Ozymodo: "Ms. Belladonna. You cannot be hit at all if you time your clones correctly. That's it. Use your head and no attack will ever, and I do mean ever, land on you."
Ozymodo: "Xiao Long. Just because you get stronger as you get hit, that doesn't mean you should get hit. You walk a fine tight rope of being strong or useless. Either block more, or get use to lower levels of strength."
Ozymodo: "Mr. Arc. Boost your teammates more and stop just healing. You can not only heal people, but also increase their strength. Help your team."
Ozymodo: "Valkyrie. Carry Lightning Dust. Sure it may be expensive, but in a war for the fate of the world no financial cost is too high. Also, get some easily crushable containers so you're not stabbing yourself midfight."
Ozymodo: "Lie. Scout ahead for any Grimm that may or may not be coming, or lying in wait for an ambush. You can become invisible to them, so there's no need to be conservative with your aura like the more combat focused Semblances. Also, add those Aura Strikes back to your fighting style if you're to still be using 9mm."

it's worth noting that the wording of the description of the movie makes it seem part 2 happens not long after part 1.
yeah so let's actually review the information we have:
so far the only 'evidence' that part 2 is post-volume 9 was an out of context segment from an interview that was specifically about part 1 and Ruby's arc in that part and how it resonates with her volume 9 journey (and so the references to it being after volume 9 is likely poor wording as the movie dropped days after volume 9 ended and the movie itself is clearly set during the volume 7 time-skip) and this tiny blurry image from the back cover of the blu ray showing an exit portal to a shapeless, vaguely desert-like landscape
Tumblr media
let's contrast this portal with the other two we saw:
Tumblr media
specific locations in there; so if RWBY were in Vacuo, why aren't we seeing Vacuo in that portal? am i supposed to believe they decided the best time to get into a VR session was immediately after arriving in a scorching hot desert, not even getting a new change of clothes?
because we know RWBY are in a simulation at some point in the movie (the glitching cityscape when they're still in their vol 7-9 outfits) and one of the few times we see Weiss she's in the simulated Emerald Forest in Vale
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like, the saturation of the environment, the trees - it's the same place. that makes it all the more likely that, no, we're still in the volume 7 section of the show (especially as, from a writing perspective, it doesn't make sense to place a spinoff movie right after a big plot hook for where things are going with the show as a whole. every other bit of spinoff material has been placed in the downtime between or during volumes when things were more relaxed)
and then there's the obvious - the first movie ended with RWBYJNR knowing that a villain on the Remnant side of things was working with Kilg%re to trap them in a simulation to get rid of them; why would they not try to follow up on that almost immediately? especially when, as you said, the description for part 2 has the JL doing exactly that with Kilg%re:
"On the heels of successfully escaping a deadly digital trap, the members of the Justice League emerge in their own world to discover that Grimm, ravenous creatures from Remnant, have overtaken Earth! In order to defeat the monsters, they must call on their new friends – Team RWBY – for help!"
of course you could argue 'well there's a time differential between universes; while it's not very long for the JL it's... days and weeks for RWBY who decided not to follow up on a villain that tried to kill them until after the entire events of volumes 8 and 9' but i mean, read that back and tell me it makes sense
so we have: team RWBY going back into the same simulation, still wearing their Atlas gear, knowing that there's a villain who was likely in Atlas who was working with Kilg%re to try and kill them specifically, and that at least on the JL side of things part 2 is an immediate follow up
put against: the blurry portal in an image we don't have context for looks like it a desert in it
yeah i'm gonna err on the side of 'based on what we know this is likely still in volume 7 era'

Looking back, the Justice League x RWBY movies were massively wasted potential.
In Part One, the JL don't get to actually visit Remnant, they get stuck in a simulation of Remnant that quickly breaks down, so they don't really get to interact with any of the characters outside of the RWBYJNR, or even react to what's actually happening in Remnant. Furthermore, the JL get stuck in teenage bodies and have their normal powersets taken away and replaced with Aura and Semblances, so it's not even the JL as we know them.
At first, Part Two seems better about utilizing the potential of a DC x RWBY crossover, by actually having Team RWBY go to the DC universe and meet the JL in their proper bodies. But then it kind of squanders it.
First off, RWBY comes to DC Earth and what do they spend the entire movie doing? Killing Grimm, the exact same thing that they do in their world. And I really don't care that these Grimm are weird, mutant, super Grimm, because they don't need to crossover with Justice League for that, especially since Watts is pretty much the main villain of the film. And Watts doesn't even come back thanks to DC's penchant for resurrecting people, he simply uploaded his consciousness to Atlas's internet before he died. Almost nothing about the RWBY side of the plot required it to be a crossover. Watts building a robot body and making super Grimm could have happened in Vacuo.
It might have been nice to have RWBY have to fight some supervillains. As it is, Yang (and only Yang) interacts with Mirror Master and Weather Wizard once, and instead of fighting, the rogues decide to team up with the heroes to fight the Grimm (Interesting how the JL and their villains are able to set aside their differences in the face of a larger threat, but the characters in RWBY seem incapable of doing so). As far as DC threats go, we only have Kilg%re (actual spelling), a villain almost nobody has ever heard of. And it's just kind of disappointing that we don't see RWBY go up against any of the more well known supervillains and have to deal with powers outside of what they're used to.
Secondly, even though the movie is set on DC Earth, it barely makes use of its setting. Gotham, Metropolis, and Central City all appear, but they're just generic cities that all look identical too each other. We don't visit any of their iconic locations like Wayne Manor, Arkham Asylum, Star Labs, or the Flash Museum. I think the Daily Planet might appear once, but I honestly don't remember, and that should tell you how well they use DC Earth as a setting. The only iconic location that shows up is the Hall of Justice, and even then, we mostly see its dull interior.
Thirdly, Team RWBY lose their Aura, Semblances, and Dust and get new powers while in the DC Universe for literally no fucking reason. Seriously, the reason the JL in Part One had new bodies and powers was because they were trapped in a simulation, there's no explanation for why RWBY changed (and seemingly got older?). But this honestly barely matters, since, again, they pretty much only fight Grimm. I might care more about them losing their iconic powerset if they went up against a supervillain, since I would want to see RWBY as we know them fight the villain with their trademark abilities. But nothing like that ever happens, so it barely registers.

Saw your ask about Curious Cat and it made me think about how some of the new characters we get introduced (Leo, Cordovin, Ace Ops, Curious Cat) or the old characters coming back (Ironwood) are villains.
I know this isn't a huge number and we get introduced with allies as well, but outside of Maria in Vol 6, characters like Pietro, Terra, Saphron and Happy Huntresses (ouside of Robyn) don't that much screentime as the characters who get revealed as villains later on. (Ok, this one isn't a really strong point as characters screentime has to do with their relevence to the plot)
I didn't mind with Leo being a enemy for the main characaters, because it showcased Salem's influance and how through fear she can back you into a corner, until there's nothing left for to do, outside of doing what she wants or dying.
But unlike with Ace Ops, Ironwood & Curious Cat, I don't feel frustration about him being a villain, because by the time we get to Vol 7-9, the main villains are pretty much established and introduced. And with that, I end up wanting to see more of them and how they will impact the plot.
So, why are we shoving characters like Ironwood, Ace Ops & Curious Cat into the villains territory, taking up the screentime, when we already have villains who could use more screentime to get fleshed out or maybe fleshed out a villain who is planned to have a redemption and join the good guys side???
I already got tired from that fight Cordovin had with our main ones and the last thing I needed in the later volumes was yet another interesting, new character be against Team RWBYJNR + Oscar & Qrow.
With the themes of trust and working together and the whole task GoL & GoD left Ozma with, you would assume they would be making allies, while also being careful so that another Leo incident wouldn't happen. But, nope. Nothing like that at all.
And if you think about, Volumes 6-9 follow pretty much the same formula Volume 5 had with it's new characters - character gets introduced and at some point are against our main characters.
I'm not saying it's a bad if it happens in the story, but this trope not only takes away the attention & a chance to get fleshed out from the main villains, but it's been present in this story for so long that it becomes dull and predictable.
If we ever get Volume 10, I might as well assume there will be a new character, who will later on betray the main ones.
Also with Curious Cat, it's kind of weird how Curious Cat is the main villain in this volume, while Neo, a villain since the early days has less than 15 minutes of screentime in Vol 9 and gets lesser punishment than Curious Cat.
Obviously every Volume needs its own selection of antagonists/villains for the heroes to face as they make their way towards Salem. So you're right, the problem is absolutely that RWBY keeps introducing new ones instead of utilizing what they already have, not that we have a large cast of antagonists at all. I know it's been said a million times before, but having the group face off against the Ace Ops and Ironwood while Salem and her henchmen are right there, just waiting around off screen, is really the epitome of this problem.
A sub-issue specific to RWBY is how continually adding in opponents also messes with the supposed importance of the shows allusions. Lionheart is based off a character who realizes he had courage all along. Ironwood is based off a character who realizes he had a heart all along. Curious is based off a character who is often annoying, baffling, and slightly creepy, but ultimately a neutral/benevolent party. Some of the others are a bit more complicated—Robyn becomes an ally even if it was A Choice to start things off with the group against the Robin Hood figure and, frankly, she doesn't do anything for the poor; RWBY at least tried to impart a moral message about friendship with the Ace Ops, similar to an Aesops fable, even if it crashed and burned—but the only allusion I'd say truly works is Cordovin, an antagonist based on a character who, when faced with a difficult situation (how do you feed this many kids?) responds with cruelty and violence ("whip" them and send them to bed without bread).
A story is a series of choices and each choice should have a reason attached, even if—like the early days of RWBY—the reason is just, "It looks awesome." However, more often than not I ask myself, "Why?" of RWBY. Why introduce more villains when you already have a whole collection that needs development? Why take all these good or neutral inspirations and make them Evil™ when so much else rides on playing your allusions straight? Why when you have problems like, "Our main girls aren't getting enough focus" is the response "So we'll toss in Jaune, and Neo, but Neo won't be the biggest threat that's the Jabberwalker, no wait never mind they're already dead, Neo is the threat, except when the Volume's villain is actually the Cat and the group's focus is on the handful of one-episode side-characters instead"?
When talking about the cast bloat I've seen a couple of people say, particularly in regards to Volume 9, that RWBY had to populate this new world, but no. They actually didn't. Not to this extent, anyway. As I've mentioned before, I've been working my way through Demon Slayer, a series that actually knows how to manage its characters. The structure of Protagonist + Two Secondary BFFs + One Hashira is more than enough for each arc, especially when the focus needs to remain on Tanjiro. So the story introduces one or two new characters that serve very specific purposes—usually providing the heroes with information about the latest demon mystery—and they get an equally small number of details that add a spark of personality... but they're left as mostly flat, background characters; providing depth to the new location without detracting from the main cast. The bulk of our time goes towards a) introducing the arc's villain, b) developing the Hashira, and c) developing the trio + Nezuko. At 11-ish episodes (roughly Volume 9's runtime) that's more than enough to juggle. If RWBY were writing it though each arc would have a slew of new characters facing off against the heroes while the main antagonist just kinda hangs around off-screen and the fandom keeps asking, "What happened to those other twenty beloved characters that were just left behind and forgotten?"
I'm not saying anime as a whole doesn't have a problem with character bloat, but at least most of the overwhelmingly large casts I've encountered maintain that structure, deliberately, of moving swiftly through a new collection of characters to show off their unique powers and personalities. RWBY tries to integrate the newcomers too deeply into an already full story, these newcomers frequently fill roles that should be going to established characters, and frankly.... the newcomers aren't very interesting. When I meet New Character #89164 in most anime I can at least look forward to that over-the-top personality and crazy cool ability; their very existence is entertaining. RWBY is like, "Here's a useless talking mouse we're going to kill." :/

Hell on team RWBY’s defense, atlas falling is probably good for remnant long term
Shame just “uniting” can’t stop the human monsters like Jacques as well as it stops Salem lol
You're not wrong; Atlas was doomed to fail because of the actions of its leaders, but the level of damage control RWBYJNR+ was able to do makes it seem like a best case scenario in hindsight. Maybe it was wrong to call RWBY's actions "failures" in that sense, because they did save the people of Mantle and Atlas! They sure paid for it (in relics and in life), but they succeeded in the evacuation. And the people of Mantle and Atlas were much more important than the cultural structure that was left behind.
But also! Jacques did eventually go down! Remnant is uniting *despite* the actions of Salem and people like Jacques and Ironwood. A lot of the CFVY books set in Vacuo have had heavy themes about the refugees from Vale and the native Vacuans banding together to fight off folks like Jacques Schnee.
While I imagine there will be a lot of friction in Vacuo amongst different groups still, the unity of humanity seems to be on an upward trend as of the end of V9, and I believe good things will come of it.

Fun (or maybe not so fun for you) au idea.
Ruby and crew make it to Atlas but don't actually meet up with Penny until after getting arrested. Though, there's something off about her. Her mannerisms are wrong, her color pallette is a mix of Ruby’s and Weiss’s, and her eyes are the wrong color. It's Penny but not the right Penny.
[The Ace-ops drop RWBYJNR in front of general Ironwood and Winter]
Winter- WHY would you steal an airship
Weiss- Im sorry, but we had to get to Atlas to warn you , and the oncoming threat from ….
Ironwood - [ smiles] Salem ?
Winter- The relics ?
[A pink beam shoots towards them from outside, and comes through the window, revealing Penny ! A Penny ? She looked like her but she was….wrong. Her clothes were more formal then their old friend, she wore a a scarf around her neck that trailed like Ruby's cloak. She didn't even hold herself like the regular Penny]
Penny Alter - I assure you , we have it well in hand
Ruby - [voice breaking] Penny ….
[The Penny narrowed her eyes at Ruby]
Penny Alter- That is my predecessor. My….
Winter - Mother .
[Ruby closed her eyes, avoiding looking at the alter Penny]
Penny Alter - [whispers] What do you know of her….
[Ruby started crying, causing the alter to take a step back]
Penny Alter - [confused, and distraught as she glances at Winter] I didn't….Winter, I don't understand
Winter - Ms. Rose was ….very important to your mother. In fact, when she was deciding what to leave you. [motions to Ruby] She wanted you to carry the spirit of two people who were very important to her
Penny Alter- Then please….[kneels down at Ruby's side] Look at me. I'm not her, but I can be important too [Ruby whimpered and kept her eyes away] Penny Alter - [upset] LOOK AT ME
[Winter pulled her back] Winter- Unchain my sisters team and find them a room [Winter turns to Penny Alter as the group leaves] Winter- Giver her some time. I imagine she still hasn't processed the death of your mother. This must all be a shock to her Penny Alter- Alright....[pulls away] But I will prove myself worthy...

Since Team RWBYJNR were licensed as huntsmen/huntresses in Atlas but Atlas is gone (and they were arrested), will they still be licensed in Vacuo or will they be students at Shade? Wonder if V10 will be “just like Beacon again Round 3” or if they will sort of have seniority over their peers who are still students.

I just finished the crossover. Spoilers. This is a half baked rant filled review from both a RWBY critic and a life long DC fan.
This animation was wonky even for rwby, there wasnt any fights choreography that stuck out to me and I just finished watching this like an hour ago. Like it was so boring my mind was just not intaking anything that could stand out. Even V5 and V9 had some good fights, and both of those volumes got huge budgets cuts because of some other project being released at the time (genlock and this crossover)
The dialogue was just such a mess. And the voice acting oy vey this was rough. Rwby usually has great VA work from the main's at RT, the funimation crew, and a boat load of others. This just felt so off, like the cast was just asleep. Did the voice director just give up like a minute in?
This story was such a mess too! I know combining 2 seperate universes is always tough I wont lie, but converting DC characters with too many varying powers, Supermans multiple powers, wonder womans godly gear, Batmans Bat-everything, Flash' speed force, Cyborgs various tech, Jess' rings many capabilities, and Vixen's animal powered necklace, its all too much to convert to 4 set abilities. Semblance, Dust, Faunus additions, and Rwbys "its also a gun" weaponry isn't enough to fit what I listed off above. Just send the rwby characters to the DC universe.
And side note, just use the teen titans. No power scaling argument needed, their strong but not stronger than the league and are still stronger than the RWBY verse. Imagine Ren and any Robin understanding one another about being orphans, or any Robin and Weiss getting some development about their rich dads. Blake and Damian can get along over their troubled past, or even Starfire and Blake since their the minorities (Tamaranian and faunus) of their teams, or Raven and Blake being goth baddies! Superboy and Yang, anger issues, Yang and Cyborg, learning to live with disabilities. Imagine the chaos of Nora and Wally west and Beastboy. Hell you could even substitute the Jessica plot with Raven struggling with her powers. Theres so much more potential here!
And jesus they did not handle the rwby characters any better. They were all so full of themselves and acting high and mighty comared to the experienced hero's. I'd argue that its cuz the league isnt all there and cant remember everything. But RWBYJNR dont remember anything either! Their all in the same boat so why are rwby treating like the league hasnt fought worse threats, as mentioned Brainiac(an alien with 12th level intellect) and Vandall Savage (an immortal from the caveman times) and while im at it why is a guy thats running a breaking and very obvious simulation a such a big deal anyway?
Shipping, oh damn right im going here. I dont wanna see it, No Superman x Ruby, no Batman x Weiss, no Wonder Woman x Blake x Yang, no Jessica x Jaune, no Cyborg x Nora x Ren. NO! NONONONO we arent doing this. Did we not learn how problematic Starco was? Did RT not learn from Ryan Haywood that grown adults and teenagers shouldn't go together? Seriously im starting to think RT has a problem, I know thats an understatement but at this point im calling it a prediction.
Alright time to speed run these individual character issues
•Batman's arc on staying on Remnant was dumb. Gotham is his soul purpose, and he doesn't need powers. He has never needed them, he's always been able to overcome and keep up with these gods with his wit, skill, and tech.
•Yeah Weiss was just Batman's sidekick. She felt so disconnected from the plot I thought I was looking at V4-5 Blake. Plus why was she so persistent on keeping Batman in Remnant? Was her daddy kink that bad, is she just into older men who are trapped as teenagers? Gross.
•Superman and Ruby's arcs were weak. Ruby leader arc was just so lame, like her significant leader moment was just "sneak jessica and jaune away for a sneak attack" jesus that was lame. And Superman didn't have an arc really, his semblance unlocking, leadership, and blame for getting trapped was all super undercooked.
•The Wonderwoman, Yang, and Blake dynamic was so forgettable. Like I genuinely couldn't remember that arc, was it like a warrior thing right? And were they like... flirting? Really? NEXT!
•Oh god go back to the other one! Not the Ren x Nora x Cyborg love corner, couldnt they have done something else with these guys? This is just sad. Shame on you RT
•Oh yay, Jaune mourns over Pyrrha again. This is after V6 right, so did we have to focus on Pyrrha being desd again? Like come on let her rest, even DBZ doesn't bring up Krillin death as much. I do admit, Jaune helping Jess out was nice, their interactions were sweet.
•I did like Jess' anxiety arc, I think it was handled very tastefully and was a great way to write her character. She's too fucking adorable, her VA was one of the good one's. This actually gave her some great spotlight that we dont see much of besides DC superhero girls
•And I actually liked Vixen, design was fine and the voice was good, even if her power was heavily underutilized. But she was cool
•Barry what did they do to you? Oh Barry no! Why did they flash and make him so... nothing!? He looks like Bart and Wally mixed together. And he's the twist villian? Why didn't the technology based supervillian yake over the technology based hero!? Barry was so boring, I knew he was gonna be a side character but bro why make him the boring twist villian?
•Killg%re. Oh fuck if im not using the percentage thing im not censoring it this crossover makes me too angry to follow the rules. So boring. He calls himself so brilliant and smarter than Brainiac and Vandall savage yet his simulation was so easy to pick apart cuz the grimm, their freinds and family, their timezones, and even their own memories are so muddled anybody can pick apart this is a dream! His plan was so bad, stick the league in another dimension? Good so far. In a simulation, okay it can work. Turn them into teens so their hormones kick in? No, moronic, i hate it, I hate this! And look, out of every villian, why Killgore? The idea of a crossover is to grab your big guns and use their names to gather up your audience. If you wanted a lesser known villian who can alter reality go with BatMite, Mister Mxyzptlk, reverse flash, the Legion of Doom, or jesus anybody? Not somebody so forgettable that even KGBeast is more recognized than him.
Well atleast it's over... wait, part one?
NnnnoooOOOOOO-

Your thoughts on the Dc Rwby crossover?
Oh boy...
So, I am... not as excited as others might be. RWBY is great, and so is DC, but that's on their own. Together, it feels... off. Especially since DC RWBY comics lack the... same feel that the show and other spin-offs have. At least for me. Will I watch it? Maybe, just to keep up with the FNDM, but having Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman with the other Justice League members team up with RWBY and JNR feels... unfair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What makes it worse will be all the supernerd talk about power-scaling. They're either going to neuter the JL or temporarily upgrade RWBYJNR and neither side is going to be happy about it either way.
AND to add to this problem is that I'm not hopeful for the writing to be good because every time, and I mean EVERY SINGLE TIME there's a crossover, one side gets more attention than the other and basically ignore the rules of the other universe.
Speed Force? What's that?
Dust? Who needs it?
Kryptonite? Aura? Nobody cares about those anymore...
So yeah, I'm not going to waste my breath hoping it will be good. Last time RWBY did a crossover, nobody cared to write anything for RWBY.

people who think the JL should've stayed as adults and been mentor figures in the movie are missing the point
these are meant to be two teams standing on equal ground, that's why they're de-aged for this one. it would've been a disservice to the RWBY cast to have them deferring to this group of strange adults who don't know anything about Remnant, not to mention a disservice to RWBY as a franchise to treat its leads as children who need telling what to do and having them play second fiddle to the Justice League
it's a crossover, they're meant to be stood on the same level (and it means when RWBYJNR go to Earth in part 2, the JL won't write them off as children who need protecting and aren't worth listening to, they're already primed to trust them)

After Salem is defeated (Red vs Blue, S15, E5):
Ozpin/Oscar: politely "Why don't we start with the simple question of how you've arrived here?"
Lisa Lavender: authoritatively "Nuhuh. We just risked our lives and our careers going from continent to continent for answers. Our questions first."
Raven: leans back in her chair "What do you want?"
Lisa L.: questioningly "We want to know what happened after your supposed defeat of Salem."
Jaune: sighs exasperatedly "Lots of bullshit. I don't even know where the fuck to start."
Yang: inappropriately curious "Is this before or after we turned off the Temple. Because if it's before, this is gonna get NSFW real quick."
Weiss and Blake: shouting "WE PROMISED NOT TO TALK ABOUT THAT!" looks at each other, looks away, blushing
Lisa: confused "Wait, what Temple?"
Qrow: leans forward "So, Salem had a bunch of these Temple tower things surrounding her personal tower, and each one did a different thing. The Temple they're talking about is the Temple of Procreation."
Ozpin/Oscar: elaboratively "It was meant to be a sort of failsafe should she succeed in subjugating the planet. This way, she could raise the humans in her image - quickly, too. It was..." looks around awkwardly "...effective."
Jaune: happy "Oh, yeah. After we killed Salem, we partied fuckin' hard!"
Yang: pleased "Y'all keep saying that! It all felt normal to me!"
Raven: factually "You were a virgin before the events at Salem's base of operations."
Yang: sharply looks at her "YOU DON'T KNOW THAT!"
Raven: smugly opens small portal, and sticks her finger in it
Yang: blushing, swats away finger floating next to her
Raven: quietly retracts finger and deactivates portal
Nora: "Oh, and these two-" points at Weiss and Blake "-are just mad because we locked them in a closet together."
Weiss and Blake: looks at her "SHUT UP!"
Blake: deflectively "And put on some fucking clothes!"
Lisa's Cameraman: seriously curious "Why is she naked?"
Lisa: annoyed "That's your first question??" in realization "Ah, that must be why the planet was in an aphrodisiac-like frenzy for a little while."
Weiss: sharply "THE SUBJECT!"
Blake: sharply "CHANGE IT!"
Raven: initiating "To actually answer your question, after the events with Salem, we decided we all needed some R&R."
Qrow: factually "We fuckin' earned it. Even Ozpin agreed!"
Ozpin/Oscar: elaboratively "I decided that if I'm going to have one last life, I may as well make it a normal one."
Jaune: dramatically "No more adventures? Fuck yeah, I was on board! I'm tired of running around doing the adults' job!"
Ozpin, Qrow, Raven: pointedly looks at him
Jaune: purposefully ignores them
Blake: expositly "Ozpin told us of this isolated island and set us up here. There was an old fort left here and we cleaned it up."
Ruby: explaining "Everyone acclimated to the peace in different ways." points at Yang "Some of us were naturals."
Yang: smug "Don't hate the player."
Ruby: factually "Mom got hopelessly depressed after not dying heroically to Salem to prevent having to deal with Uncle Qrow."
Raven: indignant immediately "L I E S   A N D   S L A N D E R !"
Ruby: defensively "But, you said-"
 flashback
Raven: factually "I am now hopelessly depressed after not dying heroically to Salem to prevent having to deal with my dumbass of a brother."
 end flashback
Jaune: deceptively accusatory "Mrs Branwen wasn't the only one having a hard time adjusting to inaction."
Everyone: turns to Weiss
Weiss: annoyed, snaps "What?"
Ozpin/Oscar: amused "Fortunately, we found a tutor."
 flashback
Weiss: seriously "Help me, Yang. Help me to be the laziest."
Yang: sitting comfortably on the ground, mock nirvana pose "You are not ready, grasshopper."
Weiss: snaps "WHAT THE FU"
 end flashback
 Raven: hesitantly "It...didn't go well..."
Blake: pipes up "Also, it turns out, this island had some native life forms never found before, but...they weren't the nicest."
 flashback
Weiss, Blake, Yang: running the fuck away from a growling noise
Yang: shouting "RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!"
Blake: hungry "I CAN'T DIE AS FOOD! OOOOOH, THE IRONY!"
 end flashback
Ren: expositly "While we were debating whether or not dying as food was ironic," turns to Nora "Nora made friends with them."
Yang: annoyed "Because of course she fucking did."
 flashback
Nora: stands proudly on top of gigantic monster, petting it "Oh, who's a good girl?! Who's a good girl?!"
Raven: shouts up "Corgis are better!"
Ren: shouting "Nora! Get down from there!"
Weiss: hopelessly bored "Tell it to fight me!"
 end flashback
Weiss: angrily "And then Blake somehow burnt down our only form of nearly modern shelter!"
Blake: defensively "Okay, first of all, lube isn't normally flammable! And B, it was just a simple mishap of dropping the entire bottle on top of my fish scented candles!"
Ruby: accusingly "But you were trying to shove the candles up your ass!"
Blake: AGGRESSIVELY DEFENSIVE "YOU CAN'T PROVE THAT!"
Jaune: annoyed "And since eighty percent of our rations burnt down with our fort, FATASS over here-" gestures to Ruby "-decided to eat some native mushrooms that deceptively looked like cookies."
 flashback
Ruby: walks up to some mushroom cookie looking things "Hello, sexies."
 a moment later
Ruby: running around everyone in slow motion
 end flashback
Blake: expositely "After deliberating for long enough, we figured that they somehow reversed the effect of Semblances," gestures to Qrow "so Qrow ate some."
Qrow: annoyed "Turns out, they don't."
Everyone: silently staring at him
Qrow: narrows eyes "I'm not explaining what happened."
Raven: amused "He was sent to another dimension."
 flashback
Qrow: in a dark place, alone, echoing words "Hello?"
 end flashback
Ozpin/Oscar: almost laughter "I told them afterwards that it was actually meant to increase the potency of their Semblances by 5,600%."
Nora: in remembrance "Oh! And while everyone was arguing on how Ruby's Semblance increased in potency by going slower, we formed the best band ever!"
Ruby: deflectively "NORA! CLOTHES!"
Nora: conceding "Sheesh! Alright!" leaves room
Qrow: leans forward excitedly "Oh, yeah! And we even got Raven to sing!"
Raven: blushes, looks away "Oh, God."
Weiss: honestly "She can sing very well! We sang many duets!"
Yang: happily "Turns out, my mom was an old k-pop singer during her time at Beacon!"
Lisa: curiously "How did you convince her to tell you that?"
Blake: deadpan "We didn't. Oscar suggested it."
Ruby: annoyed "Ugh. While that awesomeness was happening, Nora somehow built an entire robotic army to invade the area just so we would have something to fight - since Grimm weren't on the island."
Jaune: guffaws "But they all malfunctioned, so they started fighting the wildlife instead!"
 flashback
Everyone: staring at the vibrant display in complete and utter silence
Ozpin/Oscar: hesitant amazement "I have seen many amazing things in my life. But this? ...this takes the fucking cake."
 end flashback
Blake: dismissively "It was the first we'd ever heard the professor swear, too, so that just tells you how crazy it was."
Yang: almost laughter "And then Raven convinced Qrow that Ozpin fucked the first Maidens."
Qrow: slightly indignant "Hey! It was to be expected!"
Raven: grossed out "That ain't happening."
Ozpin/Oscar: deadpan "I wasn't inviting."
Raven: succinct "Good."
Jaune: moving on "Then Nora found a new enemy. One that would keep her occupied for the rest of our time here."
 flashback
Nora: shouting "FOR FAR TOO LONG, WE HAVE BEEN OPPRESSED! CRUSHED UNDER THE WEIGHT OF OURSELVES! IF WE DON'T START STANDING UP TO OUR MORTAL FOE, GRAVITY, BY GOD WHO WILL?!"
 nearby
Oscar/Ozpin: practically terrified "Are we really going to let them do this?"
Qrow: agreement "What the kid said."
Raven: amused "Why not see where it goes?"
 later
 Nora: shouting "CHAAARRRRGGGEEEE!"
Raven: drives everyone into the ocean
 end flashback
 Nora: glares at Raven
Raven: unperturbed "I told you I couldn't drive."
Jaune: annoyed "But that just meant that team RWBY both had the tactical advantage in amount of people and equipment."
 flashback
Nora: drillingly "Gentlemen, we simply cannot allow team RWBY to have superiority over us! WE MUST TAKE THE FIGHT TO THEM!"
Jaune: annoyed "Oh, Remnant Christ."
 end flashback
Blake: expositly "It made us realize that this whole Team RWBYJNR thing wasn't going to work, so we attempted trying to use forms of government to decide the leader..."
Ozpin/Oscar: curiously "Oh. Qrow, Raven, and I weren't there, actually. Did it go well?"
RWBYJNR: looks at each other
 flashback
 Yang: "I vote Yangarchy."
Blake: sharp sigh "You can't vote yourself, you dumbass."
Nora: "MONARCHY!" flexes with Magnhild in hand "The one wielding the gigantic hammer is worthy!"
Weiss: "Plutocracy."
Yang: "Huh?"
Blake: sighs “Plutocracy is a form of government where it is indebted to and/or controlled by the rich. It can transform any other kind of government into a plutocratic version of itself if the rich come to power."
Ruby: "Technocracy."
Yang: "What?"
Blake: sighs "Technocracy is a form of government where those of knowledge - like weapon engineers, for example - would lead the government in lieu of politicians and businessmen."
Yang: "Oh!"
Ren: "Timocracy."
Yang: "Not to sound like a broken record, buuuuu-"
Blake: sighs "Rule by the worthy."
Jaune: "Patriarchy."
Yang: looks at Blake "That's obvious."
Nora: "OOO! I know! How about Malarkey?!"
Blake: "Nora, that's actually not a form of government. It just means meaningless talk and nonsense."
RWBYJNR: silently stares at one another
 end flashback
Blake: looks at Ozpin/Oscar "Malarkey won."
Nora: comes back CLOTHED "Oh, yeah. Everyone thought I was dead just because they couldn't find me."
Raven: explaining "Turns out, she was just..." trips over her words a bit "...sk-skinny dipping."
Blake: angrily "And then Ruby, out of a prank, decided to spike my meal with some of her damn mushrookies this morning!"
Yang: in bliss "I'm so proud of her!"
 flashback
Blake: randomly teleporting "HO-" snap "-LY-" snap "-FUCK-" snap "-ING-" snap "-SHIT!" snap
Nora: in the distance "Has anyone seen my tanning oil?! I accidentally put on some of Blake's lube instead!"
Ren: shouting "NORA! CLOTHES! We have guests!"
Ruby: shouts at Ren "THE ROLLING GEMS!"
Ren: shouts back at Ruby "R-POP!"
Raven: crashes vehicle "I CAN'T FUCKING GET IT!"
 end flashback
Blake: in conclusion "So...here we are."
Jaune: lamenting "It's been awful! Instead of a peaceful retirement, it's just the SAME damn SHIT, with the SAME DAMN PEOPLE!"
Raven: in complete and utter amazement "Also, the weirdest thing happened!"
Lisa: looks to her "What?"
Everyone: slowly turns towards Qrow
Raven: "Qrow...stopped...drinking..."

I can’t believe it took Marrow stating outright that “they’re just kids” for me to realize that this has been a major element with his character since day one. He expressed it mostly with disdain, but he has never been comfortable with having teenagers on the battlefield and now it’s standard procedure.
