Tech as a father Chapter 72

I am sorry for the delay. I made the mistake to start and watch Monk again. Threw me into a binge watch moment as soon as I returned home from work.

Chapter 72: Favourite

As Orion bounces on Tech's legs, his gaze fixed on Hunter with an intensity that's surprising for such a young child. Tech, noticing Orion's fixation, tries to distract him by bouncing him gently and making silly faces, but Orion remains fixated on Hunter.

"Come on, little trooper," Tech coos, attempting to draw Orion's attention away from Hunter. "Let's play a game. How about peek-a-boo?" But Orion seems determined to reach his uncle, leaning precariously over Tech's tray of food, his tiny arms outstretched towards Hunter. Tech, now fully aware of Orion's intentions, tries to gently guide him back onto his lap, but Orion resists, his eyes never leaving Hunter.

"Orion, you need to stay here with me," Tech says, his voice gentle but firm. "Uncle Hunter is busy right now." But Orion, undeterred, continues to reach for Hunter, his determination evident in the way he strains against Tech's grasp. With a sigh, Tech relents, realizing that Orion's desire to be with Hunter is too strong to ignore.

"Alright, little guy," Tech says with a chuckle, surrendering to Orion's persistence. "Let's go see Uncle Hunter." As Tech lifts Orion from his lap and carries him around the table to Hunter, the other members of Clone Force 99 watch with amusement. Hunter, “surprised” by Orion's sudden arrival, can't help but smile as Tech places the eager child into his arms. Usually they try to ignore it, as Tech does tries to get Orion set to routines. "Hey there, Orion," Hunter says, his voice soft as he looks down at his nephew. "What's got you so interested in Uncle Hunter today, huh?" Orion giggles in response, reaching up to grab at Hunter's face with his chubby little hands. Hunter laughs, tickling Orion's belly gently as the child squirms with delight.

Tech watches his heart swelling with pride and love for his son. Despite his initial attempts to enforce a routine, he knows that moments like these are precious and shouldn't be denied. As the meal continues, Orion remains content in Hunter's arms, happily babbling and reaching out to anyone who passes by. And for Tech, seeing his son's joy brings a sense of warmth and happiness that fills the entire mess hall. Even if the regs would never admit it. But they adore him as well, all have seen them make silly face toward the half-clone.

Tech walks over to the food station, selecting a variety of fruits before making his way back to the table where his brothers and his son are seated. Orion remains content in Hunter's arms, his eyes bright with curiosity as he watches his father approach. Setting the fruits down on the table, Tech grabs a knife and begins to slice them into small, bite-sized pieces. He carefully arranges them in a bowl, mixing them together before sliding it over to Hunter with a smile. "Here you go, Hunter," Tech says, his voice warm with affection. "A little fruit salad for you and Orion."

Hunter accepts the bowl with a grateful nod, his own smile mirroring Tech's. He picks up a piece of fruit and offers it to Orion, who eagerly accepts it, his tiny fingers grasping at the juicy morsel. "Thanks, Tech," Hunter says, his tone sincere. "Orion seems to be enjoying his time with Uncle Hunter today." Tech nodding in agreement. "He sure does. I think he's just happy to be surrounded by family."

As the meal continues, the members of Clone Force 99 enjoy their food and each other's company, the laughter of their youngest member filling the air. And for Tech, seeing his son thriving in the presence of his brothers brings a sense of joy and contentment that fills his heart with gratitude. While the other troopers try their hardest not to look for too long at the baby, or Crosshair may glare them to death.

Orion's laughter fills the air as he leans eagerly around in Hunter’s arms, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He reaches out towards his uncle, his chubby arms outstretched as if begging to be let go. Hunter chuckles softly, his heart melting at the sight of his nephew's adoration. He shifts Orion slightly in his arms, making room for the little one to come closer or move around.

But as Orion reaches towards Crosshair, the normally stoic clone raises an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. "I'm eating," he states flatly, not wanting to appear too eager to engage with the young infant. Before Crosshair can react, however, a sticky piece of chewed-up fruit flies through the air, landing squarely on his cheek. Orion babbles excitedly, still reaching towards his uncle despite the mess he's made.

The rest of the squad watches the scene unfold with amusement, exchanging knowing glances as they try to suppress their laughter. Tech, ever the responsible one, begins to rise from his seat, ready to intervene and take Orion from Hunter's arms. But before he can make a move, Hunter gently wipes the fruit from Crosshair's cheek with a napkin, his lips twitching with suppressed laughter. "Looks like Orion has chosen you, Crosshair," he says, a hint of amusement in his voice.

Crosshair grumbles under his breath, but there's a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he reluctantly reaches out to take Orion from Hunter. Despite his initial reluctance, there's a warmth in his eyes as he cradles the infant in his arms, his heart unexpectedly touched by the affection of his annoying nephew. Pulling the fruit bowl close, so Orion can help himself. He already got drool on his check, not needing it on his hand either. And as the squad continues their meal, the laughter of their youngest member fills the air, bringing a sense of joy and camaraderie to the table that even Crosshair can't deny.

Wrecker's booming voice cuts through the jovial atmosphere, his expression teasing as he addresses Crosshair. "Hey Crosshair, looks like you're getting soft on us," he says with a hearty laugh, nudging his fellow clone playfully. Crosshair's glare sharpens at Wrecker's comment, his jaw tightening as he shoots a steely gaze in Wrecker's direction. "Watch it, Wrecker," he growls, his tone laced with irritation. Wrecker raises his hands in a mock surrender, his grin widening as he backs off slightly. "Hey, just making an observation," he replies, trying to diffuse the tension with a light-hearted tone. Despite the banter, there's a sense of camaraderie among the squad as they exchange playful jabs and teasing remarks. And as they continue their meal, the playful ribbing between Wrecker and Crosshair adds to the sense of unity and friendship that binds them together, even in the face of their everyday challenges.

Crosshair chuckles as Orion clings to him, a mischievous glint in his eye as he looks over at Hunter, as they enter the barracks. "Looks like I'm the favourite uncle now, always was" he remarks with a grin, clearly enjoying the attention from Orion. Hunter raises an eyebrow, a hint of amusement playing on his lips as he watches Orion's antics. "Don't get too comfortable," he replies, a playful tone in his voice. "He's just going through a phase." Crosshair shrugs nonchalantly, still holding Orion securely in his arms. "I'll enjoy it while it lasts, just so you know, he will always come back to me. You are all the phases." he quips, earning a chuckle from Wrecker who's observing the scene with amusement.

As they settle into their barracks, the banter continues, with Orion happily nestled in Crosshair's arms, seemingly content to spend time with his "favourite" uncle. And amidst the camaraderie and laughter, there's a sense of warmth and family that fills the room, reminding them all of the bonds that tie them together, both on and off the battlefield.

Artemis Astronauts Have Drills, Too!

Chances are, if you have ever spent time in a school or office building, you have experienced a fire drill. Well, astronauts practice emergency drills, too!

Since we began sending astronauts to space, we have used systems and drills to practice moving people safely away from the launch pad in the unlikely event of an emergency during the countdown to launch.

Early Mercury and Gemini programs in the 1960s used a launch escape system in the form of a solid rocket motor that could pull the astronauts to safety in the event of an emergency. However, this system only accounted for the astronauts, and not other personnel at the launch pad. NASA’s emergency systems have since improved substantially to include everyone.

Artemis II will be NASA’s first mission with crew aboard the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft. Artemis II will fly around the Moon and come back to Earth. Beginning with the Artemis II mission, we will use a track cable to connect the mobile launcher — the ground structure that supports the rocket before and during launch — to the perimeter of the launch pad. Picture a gondola ski lift beginning at the top of the rocket and ending all the way down to the ground. In case of an emergency, astronauts and support crews move from the capsule into the crew access arm, climb into one of four baskets waiting for them, and ride down to the ground.

There, members of the Pad Rescue team are ready to scoop the astronauts up and whisk them to safety. Think of the Pad Rescue team as spaceflight knights in shining armor. Except instead of saving crew from a fire breathing dragon, they are whisking the astronauts away from a fully loaded skyscraper-sized rocket that’s getting ready to lift off.

The Artemis II mission will also introduce several new ground systems for the first time – including the new and improved braking system similar to what roller coasters use! Though no NASA mission to date has needed to use its ground-based emergency system during launch countdown, those safety measures are still in place and maintained as a top priority.

So the next time you practice a fire drill at school or at work, remember that these emergency procedures are important for everyone to stay safe — even astronauts.

Chapter 79: The probabilities were clear

A mixture of disbelief and wonder washes over Tech as he realizes what just occurred. Could Orion have somehow moved the toy with his burgeoning abilities? The thought both amazes and unsettles him, highlighting the unique nature of his son's connection to the Force due to Amanda.

Closing the closet finally, Tech approaches Orion with a mixture of curiosity and affection. As he lifts his son into his arms, Orion giggles and reaches up to grasp Tech's goggles, his bright eyes sparkling with delight. Tech can't help but smile at Orion's infectious joy, marvelling at the boundless energy and innocence radiating from his son. In that moment, any lingering worries or doubts fade away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of love and gratitude for the precious gift that is Orion. He did promise Amanda to not let them take it. So now he has the challenge to keep it hidden.

How difficult can it be? His brothers have other things to worry about. Right? Right!

“This is just between you and me for now” Tech's murmured words to Orion carry a sense of intimacy and trust, a promise between father and son to keep this mysterious occurrence just between them. As he places a tender kiss on Orion's forehead, Tech's heart swells with a mix of emotions, pride in his son's potential, longing for Amanda's guidance, and a touch of amusement at the unexpected turn of events. With a gentle smile, Tech muses about the captured moment, grateful for the small consolation of having it recorded. The camera attached to his goggles has preserved this precious memory, a testament to Orion's budding connection to the Force and the bond they share as father and son.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Orion's abilities, Tech finds solace in the warmth of their relationship. He imagined the day when Orion will utter his first words would have been first.

As the squad begins to experience these strange occurrences, Tech observes with a cautious eye, noticing the pattern of seemingly minor mishaps. Objects placed down inexplicably end up on the floor or shift a few centimetres away from their original position. While his brothers scratch their heads in confusion, Tech remains silent, a flicker of recognition sparking in his mind. With Orion cradled in his arms, Tech moves subtly to shield his son from the mysterious phenomena, or he adjusts his posture or shifts his position so that Orion's gaze doesn't fall upon the objects in question, unwilling to reveal the truth about Orion's burgeoning Force sensitivity to his brothers just yet.

Deep down, Tech knows that these incidents are linked to Orion's latent abilities, a testament to the potential lying dormant within his son. But for now, he keeps this knowledge close to his chest, determined to protect Orion and navigate the uncertainties that lie ahead.

As the squad gathers for a meal, the conversation naturally turns to the recent string of odd occurrences. Tech, preoccupied with feeding Orion his puree, listens to his brothers' discussion with a subtle furrow of his brow. Hunter, ever perceptive, directs a question to Tech, asking if he's experienced any of the strange incidents. Tech, keeping his focus on Orion, replies in a matter-of-fact tone, "It's likely just the small jolts we experience while the ship navigates through hyperspace. I will take a look at the stabiliser during our next stop."

His explanation is delivered smoothly, betraying no hint of the truth he holds close about Orion's Force sensitivity. Meanwhile, he continues to feed Orion, ensuring his son remains content and unaware of the discussion unfolding around him. Though Tech's response seems to satisfy his brothers' curiosity for now, he remains vigilant, aware that keeping Orion's abilities hidden is paramount to his son's safety and well-being. As the squad continues to grapple with these strange occurrences, Tech remains vigilant, silently guarding the secret of Orion's connection to the Force while marvelling at the boundless possibilities that await his son's journey. No matter how difficult, he will protect it for as long as he can.

Not because he does not trust his brothers, more because of the fear they would brag about it. Wrecker, yes he would be such a proud uncle he couldn’t be quiet for long.

Moonbound: One Year Since Artemis I

On this day last year, the Artemis I rocket and spacecraft lit up the sky and embarked on the revolutionary mission to the Moon and back. The first integrated flight test of the rocket and spacecraft continued for 25.5 days, validating NASA’s deep exploration systems and setting the stage for humanity’s return to the lunar surface.

On Nov. 16, 2022, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket met or exceeded all expectations during its debut launch on Artemis I. The twin solid rocket booster motors responsible for producing more than 7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff reached their performance target, helping SLS and the Orion spacecraft reach a speed of about 4,000 mph in just over two minutes before the boosters separated.

Quite a few payloads caught a ride aboard the Orion spacecraft on the Artemis I mission: In addition to a number of small scientific satellites called CubeSats, a manikin named Commander Moonikin Campos sat in the commander’s seat. A Snoopy doll served as a zero-gravity indicator — something that floats inside the spacecraft to demonstrate microgravity. 

During the mission, Orion performed two lunar flybys, coming within 80 miles of the lunar surface. At its farthest distance during the mission, Orion traveled nearly 270,000 miles from our home planet, more than 1,000 times farther than where the International Space Station orbits Earth. This surpassed the record for distance traveled by a spacecraft designed to carry humans, previously set during Apollo 13.

The Orion spacecraft arrived back home to planet Earth on Dec. 11, 2022. During re-entry, Orion endured temperatures about half as hot as the surface of the Sun at about 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Within about 20 minutes, Orion slowed from nearly 25,000 mph to about 20 mph for its parachute-assisted splashdown. 

Recovery teams successfully retrieved the spacecraft and delivered it back to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center for de-servicing operations, which included removing the payloads (like Snoopy and Commander Moonikin Campos) and analyzing the heat shield.  

With the Artemis I mission under our belt, we look ahead to Artemis II — our first crewed mission to the Moon in over 50 years. Four astronauts will fly around the Moon inside Orion, practicing piloting the spacecraft and validating the spacecraft’s life support systems. The Artemis II crew includes: NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen. 

As we look ahead to Artemis II, we build upon the incredible success of the Artemis I mission and recognize the hard work and achievements of the entire Artemis team. Go Artemis!

Thanks for the tag @leapingbadger and @littletroggo! I'm more of a TV show person so I included some of those too.

(Gosh what has this done -- now I need to write the rest of my Librarians and Leverage WIPs! And I need to post more about the Mentalist, Leverage, the Librarians, Grimm and TFP. All great shows, IMO. I kind of hated the ending of Grimm but the first few seasons are my favorite anyway, because of all the monsters we got to see unveiled from the most benign-looking sources.)

These are some of my favorites in no particular order... (Also, hot take: the Hobbit is better than the LOTR)

first art post of the new year!!! granted, i don't share my art here that much anyway, but– shhh.

hehehehhhooo,, here's something i've been working on for 'bout a month,, albeit not consecutively– took a few,, very very long breaks in between working on this,, but i managed to finish it in the end! am i satisfied with it? .......ehhhh? not completely, but if this took any longer, it might not have seen the light of day, so like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

anyway,, made a little poster for my favorite fic, tommyinnit's services for villains, vigilantes, and various other vagabonds, by @scorpionoesit!!! it's really really good,,, and i've always wanted to make more art for it,, so i decided– poster! at least,, that's what it's mean to resemble,,, dkdmkdmdkd.

i will freely admit,, i'm... not the biggest fan of the fan-made logo i tried to design for it,, feels a bit boring, and could definitely have used a bit more pizazz, something to make feel more like the fic itself(what does that mean? you figure that out),,,, but– again, steam was running low,, dkdnksjs. graphic design is my passion. i do also have other complaints, but i'm afraid i already punched my one-use self-critique card,, oh well,,, dkdnkxjdkd.

regardless,, even with the flaws only i can really see,, this still turned out pretty okay!! hope you enjoy it, mx. scorpio and mx. alibi!!! and i hope everyone else has a wonderful new year!!!!
