I know this is probably an insane theory and I'm not sure I believe it myself, its just a funny idea. The first stoats apparently drove out the humans, but what if they didn't? What if they are the humans? Noone seems to be expecting the first stoats to die any time soon and human lifespans greatly outmeasure stoats. It seems a very human thing (historically speaking) to find yourself in a new situation and put yourself in charge of it (include reference to Shakespeare play about the man and the island that I can't remember the name of). The whole attitude around the first stoats sort of gives me Wizard of Oz (the character) vibes. I might be going a little too far but it's funny to imagine.
