Adventures in de-girlbossifying female BSD characters, pt. Gin Akutagawa. I've already talked a bit about how I think people tend to write Gin fairly simplistically: as the supportive and sometimes protective younger sister of Ryuunosuke, who is also a badass assassin who rarely speaks.

I think what people tend to gloss over is the implication of Gin being situationally nonverbal. Please correct me if I'm wrong (I've done what research I can as someone who doesn't experience this), but selective mutism tends to correlate with social anxiety, which generally is a trait that I rarely see Gin portrayed with, despite the high likelihood that she has some degree of anxiety surrounding social situations. It even makes sense why she couldn't speak in the beginning of the series, but was able to hold a conversation with Tachihara later on. Gin is the younger sister of one of the Port Mafia's elite, and it can be inferred that Gin only joined the organization because Ryuunosuke was recruited by Dazai. Even someone without a pre-existing disability would probably feel nervous about how they're perceived by their coworkers (accusations of nepotism, general misogyny, etc).

This is just my oc-ification of Gin based on limited canon portrayals of her, but I think Gin would struggle with a fear of receiving criticism or contempt a lot. She's comfortable with speaking within the Black Lizards, and maybe a little bit with the ADA, because she's grown to understand and expect what their responses to her will be. It's not that she doesn't speak because she's shy or reticent (though she can be these things as well), but that she can't speak, because there's the sense that whatever she has to say won't be received well.

Personally, I also agree that Gin isn't innately timid or meek by any means, but I also think that people, once again, oversimplify her because she's a female character into a girlboss caricature that is infinitely capable and strong, when she's portrayed in the series as someone with multiple layers, personas even, in a literal sense.

Her official dislikes are “hope” and “love” and I think that’s beautiful.

okay i do NOT know how tumblr works so i’m making this new post bcuz someone commented about the Mori comment i made last post so basically i’ll go over a crash course on why i don’t think he’s a pedo!

1) he calls Elise his wife

yup, he says this in an omake of bsd. however, the word he uses in this context is 妻 (tsuma), which is used to mean wife NOW, but meant something more along the lines of “lifelong partner” in the past. he’s being a screwy bastard and trying to toy with Fukuzawa by using a word that means either “wife” or “partner,” but basically he’s trying to see how far he can take it. calling a kid your wife is strange, sure, but calling a kid your partner could really mean anything.

2) he sees Elise naked

tbh i’m not really sure why this one proves anything. he’s trying to put clothes ON her, not take them off. he doesn’t look aroused or anything. actually, he looks… no thoughts brain empty. there’s not a single thought in that head of his at this moment, much less any sexual comments about Elise’s body.

3) Elise is based off of Yosano, Mori was obsessed with Yosano

once again, there’s nothing inherently sexual here. he abused Yosano (not with the intention to hurt her, but with the idea that her mental and physical well-being were a worthy sacrifice for the hundreds of thousands of other lives on the line), he didn’t prey on her? he canonically feels remorseful over Dazai’s lack of will to live, so it’s not too much of a stretch to say he has regrets about Yosano as well. in that case, Elise would represent the petulant and innocent attitude Yosano could have developed instead of her hardened views of the world. i think he sees Elise as a daughter, and i think he regrets not being able to treat Yosano as one either

4) “i prefer those 12 and under”

i’m foggy on the details, but he says something to that effect in a conversation with Kouyou. The context is that she’s calling him a capable boss, to which he replies, “i prefer my subordinates to be younger” (or something…). once again, this isn’t something that strikes me as inherently pedophilic. he likes young subordinates because they are weak and impressionable, and that sort of docile attitude just so happens to fit in well with his pastime of mansplain manipulate malewifing the yokohama underground. anyway, it’s nothing sexual. his organization literally human traffics, and he’s never once stepped in to do strange things to the children on their way to be sold. he couldn’t care less about them, he just wants smart yet dependent and naive underlings. also anyone who read this scene as them flirting is very ill-read in my opinion. they are not flirting. stick your shipping agenda back into fanon interpretation of characters. Mori and Kouyou are girlbossing the entirety of the port mafia together, but they’re not girbossing each other.

5) his character sheet

his character sheet does indeed have “young girls” in the likes category, but let me amend this- the words used are 幼女, aka “maiden.” you might say, “tai, japanese doesn’t differentiate singulars and plurals,” to which i reply, “have we seen him even interacting with woman out of his job?” the answer is no. he basically speaks to Elise and Kouyou, and there’s his female companionship. he’s married to his job, guys. he doesn’t have the time to frolic around with young women. but anyway, it doesn’t say “young girls,” it says “maiden(s)” so just take the plurality in the translation with a grain of salt. it could be referring to one single girl (Elise cough cough) (his daughter cough cough). also please ignore how astoundingly high res this image is.

6) Mori and fukuzawa’s argument

who’s surprised at this point when i say that this was also a mistranslation? not me! Mori says something to the effect of, “are you still fawning over stray cats?” to which Fukuzawa replies “and are you fawning over that girl still?” it was translated, for some inconceivable reason, as “only as much as you fawn over young girls” (or something) which i just don’t understand. yenpress, look me in the eye, this is not you. anyway zenki soukoku beloved.

7) letter to nathaniel

Mori plans on killing nathaniel and margret in the guild arc, right? so he has absolutely zero reason to lie when he sends them a letter saying “i want your ship and also you guys’ lives. thanks uwu” right ????? in the official translation in that letter, he calls Elise his child. idk how much more specific you can get there, chief. Elise is Mori’s daughter, your honor.

usually when i make ocs, the first oc i make is overpowered and cliche. I make up a brief story for them and give them a love interest, and then i toss them aside when i get a better idea for a character. my second or third oc is usually the oc that i stick with, though i do make many other ocs.

for example, my first bsd oc is a girl named fumiko ueda. shes an irl person who lived in the 1800s-1900s and shes an author that looked up to irl tanizaki and edgar allan poe. i wanted her to be the 'beauty that dazai will commit double sewerslide with'.

my second bsd oc is also named fumiko ueda, simply because im too lazy to research another historical person. she's ranpo's childhood friend and later his lover, as well as a hostage of the port mafia (they need her for her ability, which is Days of Hunger, basically she can bestow fortune or misfortune upon whomever she likes). i like this oc a lot better.

my third bsd oc was someone i made up in school because i was bored, and i actually like her character a lot. her name is kin toki, and later her name changes to kin fukuzawa. irl, she's yukichi fukuzawa's wife and not much is known about her. my oc is simply fukuzawa's love interest from their childhood. what i like about her is that i can fit her nicely into the storyline. anime stories or just stories in general have a 'trio', so i decided to make kin, fukuzawa, and fukichi a 'trio'. the name 'kin' is actually mentioned in the canon manga, so thats why i decided to make her a actual character.

another example (excuse me as i just inform you guys of my ocs) would be my demonslayer ocs. my first kny oc is named akiko myoga, and she is a 15-year-old hashira who used to be under rengoku's guidance. she has her own breathing technique, illusion breathing, tho now that i look back at it, its so stupid lol.

my second kny oc is named fuyumi ishii, and she is the ice hashira. a lot of other people have already done the ice hashira thing already but that doesnt mean i cant do it 🥰she's 21, giyu's love interest, and honestly such a sadistic girlboss. i like her a lot, but my third oc is def my favourite.

my third oc is named aia mirai, and she is the 19 year old ice hashira. i tend to reuse my other ocs and just upgrade them into premium, which is why aia and fuyumi are very alike. aia is, again, giyu's love interest, and her backstory is actually pretty similar to sanemi's if i think about it. she accidentally killed her own brother, who had turned into a demon and killed their parents. she's also very good childhood friends with the kamado siblings. her personality is just being honest. she says whats on her mind, no filter. she cant physically tell a lie.

And he wants to die,and from what it seems it has been years that he has been suicidal, god know how many years it's been that dazai has been suicidal, yet; he really never managed to kill himself and he was still alive and working for the port mafia, to the point where you were internally asking yourself if he wasn't pretending to be suicidal,yet with his daily suicide attempts ,thinking that seems really dumb and out of place , wich planet are we on again ?Earth? This man seemed so myserious, but, hey, atleast the fact he seems mysterious isn't mysterious too ..right? He had bandages everywhere around his body so you shouldn't think about it too much, but yet,an attempt everyday and he only has that, either he's lucky either his attempts sucks. And deep down, you can't help nor can you stop but to ask yourself .. just how exactly isn't this suicidal kid dead yet? There are sooo many ways for him to die every days and he attempts mostly every days so how? Yet he's alive, and yet he managed to make you feel what people calls "love" for him, yet you managed to fall in love with him, it seems he could probably do anything except dying.

The first time you met him , Dazai Osamu, the man who was going to be your rival and soon enough surprisingly but yet not so surprisingly your dear lover sorry sorry , was on a easy mission where you only had to find a tiger that has been causing quite some chaos and fears around Yokohama , turns out he was also looking for the white tiger because the tiger had a seven million bounty on him for some strange reasons, and it was not really super easy but it was still easy anyways ; you eventually managed to save the half-tiger boy from their dirty grasps and the half-tiger boy you were searching for was now in the armed detective agency because you decided to let him join and the others eventually agreed to that, afterall , he didn't know anything about his power to the point he thought the tiger was chasing him wich didn't make any sense, and he had no control over it, he was homeless and he just got kicked out of his orphanage , he has not ate anything for entire days because he didn't manage to steal from people yet, the boy needed a job and a house and atleast some money to buy himself some food and some clothes , if he joins he will atleast have a house and a job and he will be able to control his power and save people wich is probably a win-win situation , but now the problem about it was that the port mafia wouldn't really leave you alone because they wanted the half-tiger boy for the 7 millions and all, well not that it was a very big problem to you , it was probably just a bit annoying sometimes and it got on your nerves a bit because you could not go anywhere freely around like shopping or something without fearing that someone working in the port mafia will cause chaos where you go and cause a lot of deaths wich sometimes made you feel a bit guilty even though it wasn't entirely your fault anyways ,well atleast you're not the one they want and it was probably worst for the tiger white haired boy who just joined the armed detective agency because he didn't quite have another good choice but it was still pretty annoying most of the times to you and i can not blame you for thinking that.

You were only silently walking towards the bridge of Yokohama during your mission with your colleague, kunikida, you exchanged some words sometimes but it was always pretty simple and quick, you didn't feel like wasting your time with talking and all today, and you eventually found the tiger boy who was named atsushi next to the river acting all strange, he had white hair and a weird hairstyle and he had beautiful yellow eyes with a bit of purple in them and then a bunch of random people in black clothings randomly start to try to shoot you and your colleague out of nowhere or something and you saw him, you saw Dazai Osamu.

Dazai Osamu had dark red dull eyes that seemed souless, he was wrapped up in bandages , one of his eyes covered up by bandages, he was wearing a black coat and black clothings, he looked like he was dead inside and that there was no soul inside of his body.

You were skilled with a powerful sword ,that was your ability, your sword was your abilty, so since you figured some random people were following you very fast, as soon as they tried to shoot you you used your sword and literally slashed the bullets in two with it , now the thing was to protect atsushi who was confused as hell and genuinly scared for his life.

So that's just what you did with your colleague kunikida, you didn't even know that atsushi was the man you were searching for but you just figured the port mafia wanted him for some reasons wich was weird since he was a random persson but oh well.

"Ugh, guns"

You said disgusted and annoyed as you saw every single one the mens with the guns, only one didn't have a gun , he was probably the man who was giving them orders and all.

"kunikida, protect the boy somehow, we're gonna have to deal with motherf*ckers"

You continued talking wich made kunikida sigh out of annoyance, you didn't really care about your language and he would always scold you about it wich didn't stop you because it was funny to annoy him for you and probably nothing could even stop you.

You then proceed to slash the guns.

"can you all tell me what the f*ck do all of your creepy ass need?"

You faced them directly, you were already annoyed before because you were having a bad day anyways, the man that didn't have any guns started to walk towards you with a fake calm smile on his face, he didn't seem to fear the fact you could slash him in two anytime without hesitation, he was probably planning something, if he was walking towards you maybe he had a ability that could put you into some sort of jail? No you would just slash the jail like nothing happened, so if he was planning something his ability was probably to cancel your ability "now now calm down miss-"

The man who walked toward you started talking but got interrupted

"your mens just tried to kill me with guns why would I be calm ? Get your sh*t together dude I'm not your dog, get a life"

You said walking backwards to keep some distance, he continued walking anyways still wearing a calm small on his face as souless as ever.

"Now we just want the man with the white hair alive, if you lend him to us we'll let you be"

He simply said

"Just who the hell are you? Why do you need him anyways ? "

You asked still annoyed and walking backwards, he stopped smiling, maybe he didn't like himself and you would not blame him for that at that moment.

"Dazai, that's my name, I'm Dazai Osamu, this man is the tiger we've been looking for-"

He said as he was walking but got interrupted

"Stop walking or i'm gonna slash your soul out of you"

You threatened him even more annoyed but yet still careful and observant, he put a calm fake smile on his face again.

"Go on, kill me, just make it painless, I don't like pain"

He continued walking.

"Tsk"

You groaned still walking backwards

"So you're just a suicidal kid ? The river is right next to you dumbo"

You said frankly

"Drowning is a painful way to die"

He complained quietly disgusted.

"Less painful than being a pain in the ass"

You clearly said

"And it'll mostly be less messy than getting your neck slashed here"

You explained

"Now what are you planning to do? Cancel my ability? "

You guessed, he continued walking anyways not very surprised you figured it out.

"Good to know you have a brain"

The man with dull eyes said

"Kunikida ! "

You yelled

"I got it ! "

He wrote in his journal and a gun appeard, he threw it at you.

"Ugh, seriously now, guns? "

You sighed the gun in your hands, genuinly annoyed , you then proceed to destroy the gun in a second

"There is no way in hell i'll ever use that"

You complained

"You all are so weak, too bad for you we were also searching for the tiger that has been causing fear around Yokohama and we didn't even know he was the tiger, thanks for doing my work "

You announced, while the tiger boy was genuinly scared and very confused.

"Dazai !!! "

A black haired man rans toward both of you.

"Rashomon ! "

He yelled using his ability, black and red thingies were going towards you, so you slashed them and they grew back very fast wich was probably the most annoying part about it.

"Kunikida let's get the f*ck out of here"

You yelled still slashing the weird red and black annoying thingies recognizing Akutagawa.

Akutagawa tried to attack kunikida but you continued to slash the red and black thingies before they could even get near your colleague or the white haired tiger boy.

"Now now you're gonna be exhausted soon don't you think? "

Dazai stated, an amused smile on his face.

"Shut the f*ck up nobody asked you"

You said annoyed still slashing akutagawa's ability.

"We'll meet again soon, Dazai Osamu."

You smiled very amused.

"YEET! " Sorry I had to

You yelled using your sword to make a wind blow and get them very far from you, though it did not take very long for Akutagawa to go back where you originally were, the three of you you were already gone, you used your sword to make another wind blow to retreat with kunikida and atsushi.

That was the first time you met him, ever since the port mafia wouldn't leave you alone, they tried non stop to capture atsushi who joined the armed detective agency because of you, there was even one point where dazai captured you and you had to escape his interrogations somehow (wich was probably an exploit).

That day he was holding you during the whole thing so that you couldn't use your sword aka your ability, they tortured you a bit but luckily you didn't spill any informations out and dazai somehow decided to let you go for one second by accident wich made you able to escape, your colleagues arrived just in time to help you anyways.

"Bold of you to assume I'm gonna spill everything"

You frankly told dazai

"Well well, we don't want things to get naughty do we ? " Yes actually we do want things to get naughty dazai

He warned you

"You can come and try me, if you dare. "

You said amused.

"See you later mate" You yelled smiling while running away before literally yetting yourself again with another wind blow you made with your sword

Now, It's true that you despised him a lot, but it seemed his company amused you a lot and you went into some sort of rivalry with him, your company also seemed to amuse the mysterious man whatsoever, A bit of challenge never hurt anyways huh?

You both would always be bumping into each other on missions and always tried to mess each other's mission wich ended up being.. Interesting.

What you didn't expect was when dazai planned "the mass suicide in the city" Honestly, you were fighting your own ability during the whole thing and dazai found you when he was with chuuya and made fun of you, I would not blame him for that, you didn't quite understand what happened during that time but oh well, atleast you managed to survive while dazai was entertaining himself by looking at you struggling, the only thing that was missing was either the knife so that you could stab dazai or the popcorn so that dazai could eat it while looking at you struggling.

Slowly, this man managed to intrigue you more and more, and soon enough you surprised yourself wondering about dazai all days long.

This was slowly getting more and more on your nerves, there was no way that you possibly fall in love with someone like him, right ? Well..

W r o n g .

You both would always clash at each other but slowly some random flirting appeared and he noticed quite quickly your attraction for him, you blushing and all, and it was quite amusing to him.

He kept teasing you about your weird small reactions when he flirt and you knew deep down that he knew, it was clear, so you would always tell him to "shut the f*ck up" And you always continued your day like nothing happened.

And soon enough you ended up doing the same as the suicidal maniac, wich was flirting and teasing him about every single weird reactions no matter how small it is, but you were always the one left flustered wich frustated you a lot.

But there was one time where you managed to make him flustered, wich was actually awfully cute.

You both would always argue and flirt non-stop when you would bump into each others , like some sort of kids? You would even meet him somedays randomly at lupin's , he was awfully calm but still the flirting attempts were there.

Plans

This is just a short something I wrote for fun so be kind even though I know it;s mediocre at best (think it dont say it to my face)

summery: The PM and the ada team together for a mission and Chuuya and reader have to work together

This was honestly the worst possible situation you could have been stuck in. The ada had temporarily teamed up with the port mafia to fight off yet another threat facing Yokohama and it’s citizens. And while you respected Fukuzawa and his decisions greatly, you just couldn’t wrap your head around why you had to work with such an irritating, short tempered, angry chihuahua of a man. Ok thats a lie, your abilities did work well together, and if push came to shove you would be able to pull him out of corruption mode, and seeing as Dazai had his hands full with his own thing you were the best candidate for the job. But dammit it you weren’t peeved to be working with Chuuya Nakahara of all people.

Look it’s not that you hated the guy. You had no good reason to hate him. In fact, when he wasn’t yelling, you may even go as far as to say you found him somewhat charming. But of course this didn’t go unnoticed, and of course it was Dazai of all people who did notice, and of course he just couldn’t sit idly by as the perfect chance to mess with both his dear friend and colleague as well as his old partner just sat right there within grasp. Of course he has to reach out and grab it, and then promptly smash it back in your face by suggesting to Fukuzawa that you should be the one to work with Chuuya this time round. And now here you were, wearing ability canceling collars, locked in what honestly looked like a dungeon with the guy you found simultaneously annoying and charming.

Looking over you could see that Chuuya was sitting against the wall leaning back with his hat over his face. Honestly you had assumed that in a situation like this he would be rather restless and itching to find a way out. But he seems strangely calm in this situation, dare you say even relaxed. Does this mean he has some sort of plan? Or perhaps he’s just exhausted. You wanted to know. Curiosity may have killed the cat but last you checked you weren’t Atsushi so you should be fine. Quietly as to not startle him, you walked over and gently poked his arm. He looked up, seeming rather surprised you were poking him of all things. 

“What?” he asked. 

You looked blankly for a moment wondering how to phrase the question and not sound like an idiot. Should you say ‘why do I look so relaxed?’ or maybe ‘why aren’t you looking for a way out?’ 

“Why do you look like that?” way to go you, articulation: immaculate, clarity: one million percent, hotel: trivago.

“What? What is that supposed to mean?!” Great now he’s agitated. 

“Sorry” you raised your hands in defense and backed away slightly.”I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant you look rather relaxed given our situation. Do you have a plan or something I should Know about?” Chuuya blinked for a moment and then a slight look of worry seemed to come over his face.

“You…YOU don’t have a plan????” You were very obviously taken aback by this.

Now panicking a little you replied “What are you talking about?! Why would I have a plan???”

“I don't know you seemed so calm the whole time, and every time I’ve come across you you’re always coming up with these supe smart on the fly plans. Why the hell would I be the one to make the plan?”

“I- wait, you think I’m smart?”

“Is that literally all you took out of this whole conversation? I just told you that we are in fact trapped with no plan. Now use that head of yours and get us out of here!”

“Alright, alright.” With Chuuya’s words it had finally dawned on you how silly it had been to waste time assuming someone else would save you when you were a perfectly capable adult yourself. ‘Damn that wasn’t very girlboss of me’ you thought as you plopped yourself down fully beside Chuuya to think. In the middle of your almost meditative thinking state Chuuya poked your upper arm. “What?” you asked. “Oh nothing, just wanted to see if you were still alive. How the hell can a human being go so still? What were you even thinking about?” 

“I was trying to think of a plan and I think I’ve got one.”

—-Small skip brought to you by my inability to think of a good plan—-

Two broken collars, one gravity bashed wall, and one Chuuya provided flight up to the top of a nearby building (the designated meetup spot), later and the two of you were finally free. Luckily for you both the two of you had already retrieved the drive you were sent to collect and the security team hadn’t noticed it’s absence before your capture so were able to hold on to the piece of info your whole mission was centered on. Thank heavens.

“Thanks.”

“Hm?” you looked up at Chuuya in surprise.

“You got us out of there and you were calm doing it. I would have been pacing around like a caged tiger if you hadn't been so quick and calm about it all.”

You were stunned, what the hell kind of twilight zone type realm had you stumbled into that this man of all men was thanking you.

“I’m gonna be candid here, I was not expecting you to thank me but it’s kinda nice you did.”

You replied.”I should be thanking you too though. Other than getting those collars off my plan was pretty simple and wouldn’t have worked without your help.”

“Well I guess we both did good then” Chuuya replied, putting out his hand.

“I guess we did. You know you’re pretty cool Chuuya, for a PM exec.”

“And what is that supposed to mean?” he asked, playfully lifting an eyebrow.

“Nothing, Just that I enjoyed working together a surprisingly lot more than I suspected.”

“Well isn’t that the most touching thing!” you both turned around to see Dazai leaning against the edge of the railing wiping away a fake tear. When did he even get there and how was he so silent when he wanted to be??? “I’m glad you guys get along so well, oh I can hear the wedding bells now.” Chuuya quickly dropped your hand and went to yell at Dazai for sneaking up like that and interupting him before he got to talking and so on but not before discreetly slipping a peice of paper in your pocket with his number on it. He honestly enjoyed your company too and he hoped you could be friends in spite of your differing career paths, and maybe even one day something more.
