ROUND 1 POLL 6
24. Dr. Diana Diamond (She/Her) @numberposting
She's a science lady. She's trans. AND she's a lil stupid and lame!!! She's got it all!!! She lives in a universe where “mad scientist” is an Actual job you can get, she literally has a degree in Mad Science! She’s Very adamant that mad science is all about pushing the limits of science without being “constrained” by ethical standards set by society, which is to say that she has a moral compass made of swiss cheese. Hashtag girlboss <3
While some people can be a liiittle off-put by her basement-turned-lab containing fun death lasers, she’s honestly just a dweeb once you get to know her. When she’s not conducting weird experiments for mysterious benefactors (or just for personal enjoyment), she’s hanging out with her epic and cool wife Alice!!
Although Diana can be a lil withdrawn, Alice’s optimistic and excitable personality really brings out the best in her!! They do almost everything together: Baking, stargazing, long walks on the beach, vivisecting people… Her wife is super normal btw don’t even worry about it <3
In short, you should vote for certified sillygirl Diana becuz:
1. She’s a funnie trans lesbian
2. She loves her wife SO much
3. She didn’t get a PhD in Mad Science for nothin’
4. She listens almost exclusively to They Might be Giants and Oingo Boingo
5. She could use the validation tbh
6. She lost the last poll she was in on round 1 isn't that so sad :(
7. I love her :D
Also she does enjoy cupcakes!! She prefers cookies tho <3 If given a cupcake she'd probs just give it to Alice cuz that's what love is all about!!
Relevant Links: She has a whole Neocities blog site thing!! It hasn't been updated in a long while cuz College Hard BUT it'll be updated again sometime in the future!! https://diamondexperiments.neocities.org/
20. Dr. Vincent Dufresne (He/Him) @certifiedwerewolf
Vincent began his career as a surgeon but even before he decided to be a doctor he's always been fascinated by the idea of what the human body COULD be and the lengths we could push it to if we got rid of all those pesky "ethical concerns" that prevent medical knowledge from truly progressing. During his internship with the exceedingly kind and patient Dr. Josef Mazzanti, he was part of a life or death experiment that saved the life of his future (temporary) fiance by making him a cyborg; he also, during this time, met Harry Harcourt, who shared his fascination with the possibilities of the human body but in a more "his body specifically" way. In attempting to get closer to Harry so he could gaslight gatekeep girlboss Harry into being his personal human guinea pig, he was brought into service of the immortal witch queen with a goddess complex that Harry served with cultish fervor. (The running joke is "you think I did this? He was like that when I got him!" regarding Vincent and Haniel (said witch queen) getting blamed for Harry's nature.)
Under Haniel's guidance and with the addition of her magic, he was able to expand his experiments even beyond his own wildest dreams. Most of his subjects are children because Haniel has a thing for that (freak), but he has had a few adult subjects, the most notable (and his favorite) being Harry himself, who has been hybridized with multiple animals, most prominently a frog and scorpion. (He can also purr, because he wanted Vincent to be able to pet him and him purr about it.) In terms of the experiments themselves Vincent has a lot that he's loved doing, but his favorite experiment is his darling Harry, who he adores. They really are two peas in a pod! They're terrible and I love them.
(Oh as a side note, regarding that fiance he had, Nick's dad was also working for Haniel as her "supplier" for her subjects, and because Nick was being pulled away to the service of Haniel's husband, an immortal dragon wizard who just wants to see his wife's boobies again, Vincent spent a solid couple years as a spy, trying to convince Nick to return to Haniel's service like the rest of his bloodline before him. Needless to say, that didn't work out, and the engagement was broken. But Vincent still has some latent feelings for Nick, which is why Harry wants to kill Nick's husband so badly.)
As for cupcakes, Vincent is more of a muffin kind of guy BUT one of Haniel's other servants is a massive assassin named Briar who is also a baker and Vincent would commit cold-blooded murder without batting an eye to get his hands on one. This isn't honestly saying much, Vincent isn't as murderous as Harry but he, like, doesn't MIND or anything.

had a dream i was in this big giant mall looking for like. one specific kind of eyeliner and there were literally dozens of makeup stores in there and one of them that i went in was super gothy n shit and there was somebody dressed like the other mother from coraline in there who was like "wanna come into the back room and take a few pictures with me? its free" and i was like yeah sure stranger take me to the back room for free pictures because I'm a wise person
anyways i stood in front of the green screen with the other mother dress-up thing and out of NOWHERE a gronkle animatronic from how to train your dragons popped out from nowhere and everyone started laughing at me and this was apparently a prank that the other mother worker did and they like helped me up and asked me why i came into the store and i was all like "I'm looking for this really specific eyeliner and i cant find it" so they were like gimme a sec to get out of my costume I'll help you out. THEN THEY GOT OUT OF THE COSTUME AND IT WAS FUCKING 19 YEAR OLD JOHN LENNON. he lead me around the store looking for it, we couldn't find it, and i have no idea what happened but he suddenly became SUPER set on helping em find that eyeliner and was with me all around the stores helping me look for it??? some stores people just converted into their homes and one lady had a store that was also her home and also a hair salon so he brought me there and gave me a slice of pizza and told me to wait in the other room while he asked the lady where it was but i very clearly heard continuously saying "shes a total hot head I'm gonna marry her but i gotta help her find makeup" and i was literally just like "HUH?" very audibly and i knew he heard me. anyways we wandered the mall some more trying to find it then we came across an entire floor that was all just a makeup department but it was closed off because there was a dead guinea pig the size of a bear in the middle of it but he just flat out didn't care and brought me there anyways
i never found the eyeliner
that's just my average experience in a shop trying to find my eyeliner.
also I have so so many questions. my main one being why tf was John Lennon so nice

Guess who liked the bad guys movie so much she just HAD to make an au involving ranboo, bench trio, and aimsey and billzo because yes. The premise isn’t too far from the movie, the exceptions being that Phil Minecraft, Aka the Crowfather, is more of a father figure for ranboo during the course of the story instead of the flirty aura Diane and Mr wolf had. Tommyinnit Himself- the muscle of the crew, made him raccoon because yes, and it kind of clicks with him pretending to partner with Marmalade(Dream in the au), and then double-crossing him, because C!Dream is just as bad as Bad guys!Dream. Aimsey- the safe-cracker of the bunch, made her a serpent because of welsh mythology.
Tubbo-the hacker of the crew, made him a Wasp instead of a bee because of the normal that people have made giving him bee-traits and the origins!Smp for inspiration.
Billzo- the master of disguise, made him a bat for no actual reason, I just think it’d be funny to see a bat disguised as some poor unsuspecting man’s father as away to get into a mouse-testing lab.
Ranboo- the head leader of the crew, made him a black cat because of superstitions surrounding black cats, and I just figured he should be a little meow meow for this au >:3 it also matches with the scene where Mr wolf snapped at Marmalade since Dream is a mouse and he’s a cat, see what I did there? Phil “Crowfather” Minecraft- starring as Diane, don’t get gross he’s a father figure ok? Used to be one of the greatest criminals before renouncing his ways after almost stealing the golden ender-dragon.
And finally, Dream!- The Professor marmalade of the Au, made him a mouse since it was the closet thing to “guinea pig” I could think of. He fits the role of Marmalade really well for me since well, he’s the manipulative big bad of both Au and the Dream SMP, of course he has to be the main villain!
Bonus:Schlatt-he’s not in the terrible quality photos I took of the sketchbook, but I made him take the role of the police officer, since I just see it and it clicks.
Well I hope you liked this terrible au I made and I hope you loved this movie just as much as I did! And YES I’m aware I’m a furry! 🕷 🦈 🐍 🐟 🐺 🦊 🐹

Now keep in mind this number encompasses medications that I just have to take a larger dose of that particular med; I don't take this number of different prescriptions. AS a whole though, I take uhhh. Somewhere around nine or ten in the morning, and six at night. I might be off about my morning pills. What do you take medication for? Bipolarity and depression, anxiety, OCD, severe heartburn, even more intense nightmares, uhhh... maybe I'm forgetting others? Idk, man. I'm on too many. Have you ever had a bag stolen? No. Is there a certain song you like to headbang to? I don't do that, I'd get way too dizzy, and besides, I don't want a headache. Anything you might be giving up on soon? I've been wondering if I should (for the most part) abandon human photography. I've lost so much passion for it, and besides, I feel like I'm going nowhere with it. I know I really, really shouldn't, though. Have you ever captured a moth? I put a caterpillar in one of those little plastic habitats once as a kid that grew into a moth. Let’s Talk - Writing Is a Process
I think it’s about time I share my story. My writing story that is. It’s nothing special, nor one that’s interesting, but there are some lessons I’ve learned that I think might be beneficial. If you would spare a few minutes of your time, you might just find out that you aren’t all that alone.
Third grade is the time stamp I mention a lot. It’s the year I like to say I discovered my passion for writing. One of the few English assignments we had for the week was to write a short story, a fictional piece. Little Moon dreaded this at first, grumbling over the fact they had no idea what writing a page long (wow, a page long) story was like. Then it hit me, and I spent hours a day thinking about it.
I combined my favorite planet, Jupiter, and the juniper tree I learned about playing Animal Jam. It was called “The Trip to Planet Juniper,” and I spent nearly a year writing about it. The story lay on the frayed and torn pages of an orange marble notebook, between nostalgic recollections of a vacation and new pet guinea pig. The spine is broken, Hello Kitty stickers taped down all over and my name written in fading Sharpie. I still have that book. It’s in the attic somewhere it doesn’t belong, but I’ll see it soon.
I remember filming and editing videos with my stuffed animals, the main characters, and showing them to my entire family. They, and my teachers, praised me for my work, which I remember to this day. The little notes a peer teacher, now a teacher, at my school had written, the excitement I had sharing my ideas with my friends. It was fun, until I stopped writing.
I don’t know why it occurred, but it did. My passion disappeared, somehow evaporating into thin air. It wasn’t until my new friends at the time introduced me to this concept of “ocs” that I began writing again. This was in middle school and with my growing obsession with fandoms and intense fan fiction writing, I never stopped.
Out of that time, my first real oc, Niko, appeared. I think about him a lot and how much he’s changed. The way he went from a notebook page to a thirty-three page google document in only a few years. The way his character has grown and how much I can relate to him.
The stories I write are fictional, yet semi-autobiographical monstrosities that brew and ferment in my brain for as long as they need. They’re how I express myself without being explicit or digging deep enough through my pile of issues. It’s the way I twist and warp real life in front of me that inspires me to continue on. Despite the hardships and roadblocks, I push myself to find ways around them because I know this is what I want to do. I want to tell my story in their shoes.
It’s this passion that makes me fight what I once hated. As a third grader I hated reading and would often falsify reading logs because I saw no use. I was three and four levels ahead of everyone else and doing just fine. It wasn’t necessarily my ego, but my complacency that doomed me from the beginning. I still find myself procrastinating when I wish to read, even if the book is amazing. Even if I now love to read.
What I find inspirational is the connection between reading and writing itself. I once heard the advice that you cannot be a writer without being a reader. I don’t know from who, but I believe it’s quoted from a famous author. Regardless, I find this point true to an extent.
It isn’t just reading that makes a writer. It’s reading, watching tv, listening to music, experiencing life. It’s living. You cannot be a writer if you do not live. If you do not take moments in life and romanticize them in a way that makes it worth living. If you do not experience the ups and downs. If you do not possess that drive for completion and success.
What you dream of is what you will achieve. Time is merely an illusion that we mustn’t take seriously. If you take twice as long to learn something as your friend, I’m proud of you. If you get up three hours late, I’m proud of you. If you finish your novel ten years after you started, I’m proud of you. The point lies at the end of the sentence. You conquered, and you achieved. That’s all that matters.
There are only so many stories of dragons and the end of the world human beings can tell. It’s the thought and distinct uniqueness of each writer’s personal experience with life that makes stories come alive. What they need and what they desire.
And I think that’s beautiful.

Robron prompt: family or husband fluff (if it grabs you!) 💖
Most 14-year-olds wanted to be indoors, playing video games with their mates, but when they’d announced that they were taking Ellie to the park, Seb had surprisingly wanted to come too. Knowing he’d been working hard in preparation for next year when he’d start studying for his GCSEs, they’d let him come with them for the afternoon for a break and a change of scenery.
Now, Robert and Aaron sat on a bench at the side of the playground, watching as Seb pushed Ellie higher and higher on the swings per her shrieking demands, her little voice carrying on the wind followed by peals of high-pitched laughter when her brother acquiesced.
The two of them together, Eleanor with her riot of dark curly hair that never seemed to stay untangled, and Seb with the same green eyes and freckles as his father but a wicked smile that was all Dingle, it would never stop being something that neither could quite believe was real. It had taken so long, they’d almost given up hope.
But they hadn’t, because they had each other and together, they could do anything; that’s what they had promised each other, when they’d renewed their wedding vows a year after Robert had been released from prison, in a quiet ceremony in Wales. It had just been them, Liv, and Seb, Robert being unable to face a full to-do while still recovering from a breakdown, and Aaron not needing one.
“I keep saying it,” Robert said suddenly, breaking the silence, “but I thought for so long that I - that we’d - never have this. That I could never be a good enough father or husband again.” He stopped, swallowing hard, composing himself. “But you - you gave me that hope. You believed in me.” He reached across the bench for Aaron’s hand; he took it, twining their fingers together tightly, squeezing. He could feel Robert’s fingers shaking, and he gripped harder, wanting him to feel through his touch that he was there and tangible, not a fever dream or a mirage Robert’s mind had designed to play cruel tricks on him.
“You are good enough, you muppet,” Aaron insisted. “Look at them. Look at how happy they are, just messing around together, being siblings. I never doubted ya as a dad and I never doubted ya as a husband. Just took a bit of time, is all.”
“Yeah, because I messed things up. Again,” Robert muttered darkly.
“I thought you were dealin’ with all that?” Aaron said. “With your counsellor?”
“I am,” he replied. “I promise, I am. I never thought I’d spend seven years in therapy, either. But it is helping. It does help. Rachel’s great.”
Rachel was Robert’s therapist, a woman with red-hair and purple-framed glasses a little older than him, and Aaron liked her a lot. And when it came to Robert, he had high standards - and was very picky about who he trusted with his husband’s health and welfare.
Aaron leaned over to press a kiss to Robert’s shoulder, quick and fleeting, a gentle touch of the lips that said I’m here.  And I’m proud of you.
At that moment, Ellie and Seb chose to abandon their games and came running up, Ellie immediately launching herself into Robert’s arms and scrambling into his lap, black hair flying.
“Seb says he’s going to eat me, Daddy!” she exclaimed, her eyes huge. “He said he was a big bad monster and he was going to eat me!”
“Ah, see, we can’t have that,” Aaron said, addressing Seb, who was red in the face from chasing his sister around, pretending to be a dragon in their make-believe games. Fairytales were Ellie’s absolute favourite, and Seb was usually her guinea pig. “Princess Ellie has big strong knights to look out for her, and we don’t like dragons much, do we, Rob?”
“Definitely not,” Robert said, giving Ellie a smacking kiss on one of her ruddy cheeks. “So sorry, but the princess stays with us. The bad dragon has to get back to his maths homework.”
“Haha!” Ellie giggled, sticking out her tongue at her brother. Seb blew a raspberry back at her, then ruffled her hair affectionately.
“Can I at least go and see Isaac later?” Seb asked.
“Okay. But only if your dad checks your homework first,” Aaron compromised.
Seb groaned. “Fine.”
“I love you, you know?” Robert said. He kissed the top of Ellie’s head again. “Both of you. You’re both so important to me, I need you to know that.”
“Eh, what about me?” Aaron asked, feigning offence.
“I love you the most,” Robert said, over the top of Ellie’s head. He smiled a soft, slow smile, one he reserved just for Aaron. It was still there, even years later. “Always.”

would you say you have a “messed up life” ➔  “Well...my granddad is an Elder Dragon, my biological mom raised me as a weapon, my daughter is a dragon, I died once. I think that all qualifies as ‘messed up’, right?”
have you ever ran away from home ➔ “Hm...I guess so. It was more like relocating, though.”
have you ever gotten kicked out ➔ "Probably. I’ve done so much stuff I can’t even remember it all.”
FRIENDS
do you secretly hate one of your friends ➔ “Of course not!” He frowns, looking slightly offended at the question.
do you consider all of your friends good friends ➔ “They try their hardest,” He says firmly. “That’s what matters.”
who is your best friend ➔ “...Taimi.”
who knows everything about you ➔ “I doubt anyone does. Maybe the Pale Tree if she’s been snooping around the Dream.” He grimaces at that.

Tag game!
Rules: Answer 17 questions & tag 17 people you want to know better
I was tagged by lovely @imabirrrb !! Sorry this took so long!
Nickname: Jen in here but where I live one woman calls me Jennuli, Jensku or Jenskuli sometimes :D
Zodiac sign: Taurus
Height: 173cm | 5″7 feet
Hogwarts house: Hufflepuff
Last thing I googled: cm to feet :D But before that I googled some coffee shops at a shopping center because next week, I’m going to grab a coffee with a person I had a long fight with and we’re going to go talk about it - since we’re not kids anymore and we can be civil about it :D
Song stuck in my head: I watched some deleted scenes + song cracks from X-Men Apocalypse a couple of days ago and now my head screams “LET’S GOOOO TOOOO THE MAAALLLLL... TODAYYYY!” every time my thoughts come across X-Men XD
Following: 62
Followers: 530
Amount of sleep I get: Some nights I sleep like a happy bean for about 8-9 hours and some nights I wake up after 5-7 hours and then I’m beginning to get tired around 5pm and just fall into bed at 9pm.
Lucky numbers: I’ve been born on 7.5.1995 and I’m 24. So 7, 5, 95 and 24. Next year it’s 25 tho.
Dream job: Professional guinea pig mom :D But if we’re talking about serious jobs, I don’t have a dream job, nothing interests me that much right now.
Wearing: A dark grey shirt with a cool mandala lion on it, my sports clock, jeans and mismatched socks with another one being dark blue and another dark grey :D
Favorite songs: I’ve been listening to a lot of Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy and Imagine Dragons lately so at this moment, I’m saying that various songs from them are my faves. (Centuries, I’m So Sorry, Castle of Glass etc)
Instruments: Piano :D I can play a little bit and I like how piano sounds, always liked it.
Random facts: I can tell you plenty!
1. I can imitate a guinea pig.
2. I often wake up in the strangest of positions in the morning (often, when sleeping on my right side, I have managed to throw my right arm behind my back with my fingers underneath my side).
3. I hate everything horror, because my imagination starts to run too wildly if I’m watching horror movies or videos = I’m scared if I’m alone. Stranger Things didn’t scare me at all tho.
4. I’m way more disturbed by animals getting killed in movies/games/tv shows than humans. Killing kids etc in TV shows is ofc horrible to look at but if you kill an animal (and it doesn’t die right away), you can be sure I remember it after 10 years and it gives me anxiety even then. That’s the reason I haven’t watched Game of Thrones even though I’ve been really interested in watching it.
5. The house I’m living in is haunted.
6. I was born the day Finland won the World Cup in hockey for the first time.
7. I love a lot of foods others hate. For example, Kallen mätitahna (Kalle’s roe paste), maksamakkara (liver sausage thing you spread on your rye bread), liver casserole and mushrooms. Also for non-Finnish people, spinach pancakes might sound disgusting but they’re my heaven tbh.
Aesthetics: Guinea pigs, smiles, friends, nature, earbuds, pasta/pizza/sushi, keyboard, spring, chocolate? :D I’m not good with aesthetics.
Tagging: Only my active mutuals because I don’t have the courage to tag anyone else XD @carolinesbookworld @oneofakindimagines @myriadimagines @iknowmyvalue-fics @bennyhargreeves + @tessaisalbright because she’s a regular in my tag games + a precious bean ♥ + everybody else who want to do this! And ofc if you don’t wanna do this, you don’t have to!

Can I ask for all of the character question? 👉👈
i love you anon! :) this is kinda long so i’mma put everything under ‘keep reading’
kamado tanjiro: what are your goals? what drives you forward?
(it really pleases me to answer tanjirou’s questions first lol)
my #1 goal for life—to live a good life. it sounds unbelievable but i’d love nothing more than to finish hs, get a degree, find a job i’m relatively good at, and have enough money to be comfortable. i don’t need a mansion, designer clothes, expensive vacations, or multiple cars, any of that. i just want an education, a roof over my head, food on the table, and family and friends that love me. it’s not a life for everyone, but it’s a life that would make me very happy.
my #1 goal for my blog—to improve as a writer. y’know what they say: there’s always room for improvement. this is actually one reason why i take such a long time to write requests because when i’m writing i’m always asking myself—where can i improve? what am i weak at? what am i strong at? can i write this differently? before i started this blog almost everything i wrote was kept to myself, but then i realized i’d never improve if i didn’t learn not only how to write but also how to share it with others as well.
kamado nezuko: who amongst your family/friends is the closest to your heart?
(i’m excluding my kny writing fam from this because i don’t want anyone feeling left out)
irl i’m closest to my dad and my best friend. i’m so much like my dad and we share the same strange sense of humor. when i was younger he and i went through a lot of hard times with my mom and extended family, and since i’m an only child all we had was each other. as for my best friend, i’ve been friends with her for well over a decade now and she’s the closest thing i have to a sister. when you have a friendship like that, you should never let it go without a fight.
agatsuma zenitsu: what is your greatest fear?
that i’ll accomplish nothing in life and end up with barely an education, jobless, homeless, and poor. this is why my #1 goal for life is what it is. i don’t need to have everything in the world, but i just want to have the basics (education, job, house, food, family/friends), money to splurge every now and then, and i’ll be more than okay with that.
hibira inosuke: are you better at remembering names or faces?
faces! i can remember a face but i’m SOL if i try to remember a name.
tsuyuri kanao: are you often indecisive or do you find it easy to make decisions?
it depends! i’m indecisive when it comes to things like picking where to eat and what to buy, but it’s easy for me to make decisions when it comes to things like what i want to write and if one decision is better for me than another, like deciding that i should eat a banana over a cookie lol.
ubuyashiki kagaya: are you more of a leader or a follower?
i’m more of a follower! if i need to lead then i can, but i don’t have any desire to lead. when you’re a leader you’re at the top and everyone, especially at the bottom, looks up to you for the major decision-making, but that’s not me. i have no problem with being a follower and i’d rather follow instead of lead.
tomioka giyu: do you think you are well liked amongst your peers?
nope, but that’s because i’m in the background so i don’t get noticed too much haha. in my hs i’m not one of the popular kids and i’m not a social butterfly either. if some of my peers like me, that’s great… but i’m in school to learn, not to be well liked by all my peers.
rengoku kyojuro: how strong are your moral values?
extremely. very rarely will i stray from my moral values, and even then it has to be for a very good reason or for someone i love.
kocho shinobu: do you have a dream you dearly wish to see fulfilled?
my dream is everything i wrote earlier as my #1 goal for life! i know, i know—it’s boring but it’s all i want from life.
kocho kanae: would you consider yourself to be more observant or absentminded?
i’m more observant! it’s crazy how much you can miss when you’re not observing everything and everyone around you.
himejima gyomei: is there any media (movie, book, tv show etc.) that manages to make you cry no matter how many times you rewatch/reread it?
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
i love those movies. i love hiccup, toothless, the OSTs (i listen to forbidden friendship and test drive all the time) watching the first movie when it came out back in 2010 was amazing.
tokito muichiro: do you daydream often?
I DAYDREAM SO MUCH! every day, all day. my mind is where all the magic of writing happens.
iguro obanai: what is your spirit animal?
the guinea pig! THEY ARE SO FUCKING CUTE. i had two that passed away a few years ago, but i loved both of them with all my heart. also do you know how underrated guinea pigs are???? to this day when i see or meet one i squeal like hell. but know that if you adopt one, you should really be adopting two (as they’re social animals) and give your cuties plenty of room to roam!
shinaguzawa sanemi: do you think before you speak?
almost always, unless i’m chatting or having fun. there are just some things that i need to think about before i speak about it, or else i might say the wrong thing or make the wrong decision. i don’t wanna be too rash and speak before i think.
uzui tengen: how often do you wear jewelry?
every day! i have these little studs i wear every day and that’s it. i love jewelry, especially dainty jewelry, but it’s a real pain wearing a lot of it. plus i have small wrists so bracelets and watches are ridiculously small and loose on me.
kanroji mitsuri: have you ever been in love?
yes i’m in love with my wife
but seriously speaking, nope and not interested. i’m way too busy currently for love. will i be interested later? yeah but not while i still have a lot on my plate with school.

The Definition of a Hero (FMA x BNHA, 12)
Notes: My dumbass forgot that I was a few chapters behind on this fic on here. lmao I’m so good at cross-posting. Someone give me a medal.
The Definition of a Hero introspective
The next time they came to school was decidedly very strange. Bakugou couldn’t decide if it was real or a dream, which threw him off the entire day. Things were just so normal and then they weren’t. It irritated the hell out of him. They went to their regular school classes during the day, the pro heroes acting like it was just another day during their lessons. Present Mic was his giddy, loud self, like he hadn’t demolished some villains on campus the other day. No one even mentioned the USJ Incident, which it was now being called on the news.
Students from the other classes kept giving them odd looks, some opening their mouths like they wanted to say something, but then he’d shoot them a heated glare or a scowl and they’d scurry away from him. He was not about to deal with stupid people asking him stupid questions.
Bakugou had heard one student from Class 1-B ask Kaminari if he had been afraid. Bakugou scoffed at that. Hell no he hadn’t been afraid. The second that stupid ass warp gate villain had sent him and Kirishima to another zone, he had vowed to blast that foggy bastard to high hell. Sure, it hadn’t happened that way, but that was because All Might had come in. Even if he had been afraid, Bakugou found it hard when All Might was around.
Not to mention when the Flame Alchemist had arrived in true form.
Those flames were still stuck in Bakugou’s head a full day later. The way they’d roared down the steps like a dragon and then wrapped themselves protectively around Deku and All Might, blocking them from the villains. It had looked just as simple as when that tiny pop of fire had knocked that villain’s hand away from Deku’s face. Two very big differences, but neither one of them less in strength. It was easy to get overwhelmed by the grandness of those large flames, but Mustang had been so far away and that bit of fire that struck the villain without hitting Deku despite being inches away was what really got Bakugou.
Would he ever be capable of such precision? He thought so, but then his quirk didn’t allow for long range attacks. If he needed to hit something far away, he had to let off a massive explosion. He liked doing that. It was flashy and it brought all eyes on him. A huge explosion was impossible to ignore. The Flame Alchemist was a showy pro hero as well; it was why Bakugou had noticed him first. Seeing him work on both a large and small scale had been eye-opening. It made him want to explore his quirk more.
Bakugou was sitting in their homeroom class, feet on his desk and thinking darkly on the fact that he’d had to be saved by All Might and maybe even the Flame Alchemist when the door swung open. He didn’t know who he was expecting to come in, seeing as how Aizawa had been brutally attacked by Nomu, but it hadn’t been Mustang, especially not almost entirely in his pro hero costume.
“Evening class,” Mustang greeted coolly as he walked up front. Everyone snapped into attention, although Bakugou didn’t pull his feet down from his desk. Instead, he folded his arms and hardened his expression as he gazed up front. Normally, Mustang did as All Might sometimes did, wearing plain clothes, but he’d switched it for the costume that anyone would recognize as the Flame Alchemist. It was somehow flashy and understated at the same time, like he was going to a fancy party and maybe rob every single rich asshole there if he felt like it with a smile on his face.
Engine Legs raised a hand. “Where is Aizawa?”
“He’s still recuperating,” Mustang explained. “Give him another day or two and I’m sure he’ll show up.”
“That’s way too soon!” Round Face exclaimed. Pft, not for a pro hero.
“So manly,” Kirishma added. “Maybe too much, if that’s possible.”
Mustang grinned goodnaturedly. “He’d be here sooner if it didn’t give him an excuse to stay in bed longer.”
Despite the fact that Aizawa wasn’t here for a very serious reason, most everyone managed to laugh at the comment. It was easy to picture their homeroom teacher curled up in his blankets all day, although the lightness was interrupted by the remembrance that he was there for a reason. Bakugou hadn’t seen Aizawa fighting the villains on his own or get overwhelmed by that huge brain bird villain and hands villain, but from what he’d heard, it had been more than horrific.
“In the meantime, you’re stuck with me as a substitute,” Mustang continued. Braid Boy groaned out loud and sunk in his seat. It didn’t affect Mustang’s positive bordering on smug attitude in the slightest; in fact, it seemed to make it worse. “Oh trust me, this isn’t a joy for me either. This means extra work.”
“Boo hoo, we work a lot too!” Braid Boy said.
“I’m not denying that U.A., as the most prestigious hero school, puts you through the ringer, but come back to me when you’re running your own pro agency and teaching at said school,” Mustang countered with ease. Braid Boy turned a little red in the face and turned away with a scowl, but he didn’t complain anymore at least. He still hadn’t gotten over Mustang using him as a guinea pig on his first day. Bakugou thought it was genuinely amusing.
The rest of the class was relatively boring, especially after their fight with villains at USJ. It was weird doing such normal, boring things with that looming over their heads. Even though they went through the motions of school, it was in the back of all their heads, waiting to be brought up. No one did though, at least not in large groups. As they got into smaller ones though, talk of it could be heard. The problem was that they’d talked through it so much already, but it was hard to let go of. After all, they were just kids and they’d been attacked by villains.
It hadn’t been the first time for Bakugou though.
The memory of the sludge monster rested in the back of Bakugou’s mind at all times, like an itch he couldn’t get rid of, but the USJ attack had brought it to the forefront. He’d had to be rescued -- again. By All Might -- again. While he knew that he was stronger now than he was a year ago, he could admit that he was nowhere near the level necessary to defeat that Nomu guy. The thing had been created to specifically fight All Might. Bakugou swore that he would surpass All Might one day, but it was not this day and those villains had proved it.
He hadn’t even seen the villain dashing to attack him. All he had heard was the command to free the warp gate villain and then he was on the ground next to Deku. It was less than a second, but he hadn’t seen a single thing. He hadn’t seen All Might knock him out of the way and take the brunt of Nomu’s punch. It was like when the sludge monster had got him. He hadn’t been able to react in time before it felt like the sludge was trying to squeeze his organs out of him to make room for itself.
All he could do was explode. Bakugou tightened his hands into fists under his arms. Was that all he could do?
No, no, he could do more than that. He would do more than that. He was going to be the best.
By the time class was over, everyone was eager to leave school. Bakugou was slower, taking his time in dragging himself out of his desk and getting his things together. Kirishima gave him a look that he pointedly ignored and then the spiky-haired boy left with Sparky and Alien Girl. After slinging his backpack over one shoulder, Bakugou made his way up to the front where Mustang was shuffling papers that Aizawa had presumably given him in order to teach the class.
As soon as Mustang noticed him, Bakugou burst out accusingly, “You held back.”
The statement was so out of the blue and with no context that a surprised glow actually flickered in Mustang’s eyes before they went back to their usual guarded. For someone that came off as so open and confident on television and even while teaching, Bakugou had started to notice that there was a very large wall in between Mustang and everyone else. It was like he gave off the aura of being open without actually being so. Bakugou never hid how he felt and never tried.
“You want me to be meaner to students?” Mustang quierred, though Bakugou could tell that his teacher knew that that wasn’t what he was talking about.
“At USJ,” Bakugou reiterated. “You held back.”
Mustang considered him for a moment with that unreadable expression on his face. It was like nothing could get past him or get out of him. No emotion or thought that he didn’t want to share could get past that look. Bakugou held his stare, forcing himself to look equally as blank, although he couldn’t hide the heat from his eyes. It was one thing to see in person just how strong his favorite hero was; it was quite another to know that said hero could be stronger.
“If you’d been paying attention in my lessons,” Mustang said, “then you would remember that going all out isn’t always the answer.”
“Bullshit,” Bakugou ground out. Mustang didn’t react. “That’s bullshit and you know it.” Maybe he shouldn’t be swearing at a teacher that could blast him out of the building or give him a weeks worth of detention, but someone had to call him out and he wasn’t sure if anyone else realized it. Those flames had been overwhelming. “You could have ended those villains right then and there!”
“Are you certain about that?” Mustang asked him. “Sure I wasn’t at my quirk limit?”
Bakugou shook his head. “No way, I know you could’ve done more, but you didn’t. You held back.”
There was another beat of silence where they stared each other down. Bakugou couldn’t help but feel like it was either a competition or a test and if he backed down then he would lose something. This was a man that Bakugou had spent years looking up to and admiring. If he crumbled under this pressure, he’d lose any sort of respect as a future hero that he’d gained.
Finally, Mustang nodded his head and sat down in the seat behind the desk. “You’re right. I did.”
“Why?” Bakugou felt vindicated in not only getting an answer but being right -- and yet he didn’t feel good about it like he normally did. It was hard to feel good about something that didn’t make sense to him.
Mustang leaned back in the seat and propped his feet on the desk as Bakugou had done for half the class, looking as if the position was more familiar to him than sitting upright. He looked at ease despite talking about something that he had avoided. “I made a promise to myself when I wasn’t much older than you that I wouldn’t kill anyone with my quirk. I don’t know if it was the right decision, but it’s the one I made.”
“That’s stupid,” Bakugou responded with all the bluntness of a dull knife. “Villains aren’t going to be that noble. They won’t hold back or hesitate to kill you or innocent civilians. Why should you?”
“That’s a good question and one we can discuss without ever getting a good answer,” Mustang conceded. Again, it felt like Bakugou had given the right response but was still wrong somehow. He laced his fingers together. “The thing with my quirk though is that it is very easy to kill someone with it. Bringing a difficult villain to their knees or forcing them to surrender without killing them is much harder. I have to remind myself that daily.”
Bakugou flexed his free hand at his side while his other tightly gripped the one strap of his backpack. Already he could feel the nitroglycerin sweat building up on his skin. It was so easy to let off explosions. Ever since his quirk had manifested, he’d used it all the time to build up its strength. He wanted to be the strongest. He wanted to be the best. The idea that Mustang routinely held himself back was a concept Bakugou couldn’t understand. Why? If he could be stronger, then he should be.
Even if that strength killed someone? Bakugou hesitated. It wouldn’t be that difficult. He had made sure that the massive explosion he let off during the combat simulation wouldn’t killed Deku, but if he’d actually aimed at the little green-haired shit instead of to the side, it would have killed him. He would have killed him. And it wouldn’t have been anything. Setting off his quirk was like breathing.
He wondered if it was like that for Mustang. If the reason he held back was because killing someone would’ve been as easy as breathing.
“Quirks like ours Bakugou are something that a lot of people admire because they’re powerful,” Mustang told him. Try as he might not to, it did affect Bakugou that Mustang was lumping the two of them together. “But they are also something that people fear.”
“I don’t care about that,” Bakugou said. “If people fear me, it’s because of my strength and they’re weak.”
“If you look down on those that you see as inferior, you’re never going to become a good hero,” Mustang said. The statement cut Bakugou down to the bone. “Trust me; I have worked alongside plenty of people that I consider to be weaker than me. I’ve worked with people that I loathe and want to light on fire and I know I can. I know I could put them in their place.”
“So why don’t you?” Bakugou asked. “What’s the point of having all that power if you aren’t going to use it all?”
Mustang held his hands up briefly and then let them fall back down against his chest. “I don’t have to use it all in order to accomplish what I want.” To think that he’d made it to the number four hero spot while still holding back was an accomplishment in itself, but Bakugou didn’t understand. “My quirk is very deadly and I have to recognize it as such and also understand that it’s important that I control it instead of the other way around. When I do lose control, when I stop holding myself back, things can get...dicey.”
Bakugou frowned further. “Like how?”
“You remember the fight you talked about in class the other day?” Mustang prompted.
“Yeah, the villain with the fire resistant skin and healing quirk whose eyes and mouth you burned.” Bakugou shrugged his shoulders. He kind of thought that was one of Mustang’s coolest and impressive takedowns. It was unfortunate that no footage had surfaced, only one anonymous eye witness recount. Even stranger was that he didn’t seem pleased about it. “What of it?”
“The villain did have a healing quirk, so I had to constantly keep burning him from the inside out in order to bring him down,” Mustang explained coolly. “He had to be hospitalized before he could be arrested and he eventually recovered -- for the most part.” That didn’t make sense. The villain’s healing quirk should’ve done the trick, even if it was on the inside. “The damage I inflicted was so great that it essentially burned his quirk out in those areas. I didn’t allow it the time to fix it and after several failed attempts it just...accepted the damage as normal.”
That was a little more horrific that Bakugou expected. He’d never read anything about that and he’d done a lot of digging around when he was younger on hero forums. From group chats and threads speculating on All Might’s true quirk to hidden footage of the Flame Alchemist’s more brutal villain takedowns that were kept out of the public eye, there was a lot to be found online. He’d never heard of someone using their quirk so much that it more or less quit on them. After plenty of recuperation, a quirk would come back. It would do its job. But give up? That was unheard of.
“His eyesight was permanently damaged and he was no longer able to talk,” Mustang finished. “I think it took a year before he could eat on his own. All this done in prison.” He pulled his feet down and sat leaned forward, his forearms pressed on top of the desk. “I did all of that while completely in control and holding back. I’m not overly fond of considering what I’m capable of if I didn’t do that. Are you?”
Bakugou shoved his sweaty hands in his pockets. “I’m in control. I don’t need to hold back.”
“I hope you’re right.” Mustang shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe you are. Maybe I shouldn’t have held back then. Maybe I should have killed those villains. They were going to kill you, after all.” Not fucking likely. No way was Bakugou going to let those jackasses get him. “If we cross paths again, I doubt I’ll be as...merciful.”
If that was merciful, then Bakugou really wanted to see what Mustang was capable of when he wasn’t. Then again, he thought back to the cold expression on Mustang’s face at the top of the USJ stairs after he’d saved Deku. What had he said to the warp gate villain?
“Shall we see if fog burns?”
It was nothing worse than what Bakugou had told that villain while holding him down with an explosive palm. But that vicious grin on his face and the way he’d said it had given Bakugou pause. Like Mustang was more than ready to burn the place down. Like he was asking for an excuse to let loose. Bakugou could understand that very well. He felt that itch so often, but he couldn’t scratch it and didn’t know where it was coming from. He didn’t want to do evil; he didn’t want to be a villain by any means. He wanted to be a hero more than anything. But that didn’t stop him from feeling like he was burning from the inside out too.
*
Todoroki couldn’t get the flames out of his head. He’d never seen anything like it before and he had lived with fire his entire life. His father had excellent control over his quirk and was incredibly powerful, being able to bend fire to his will in several unique ways to even create weapons, but Todoroki had never seen him manipulate his hellfire in such a way before. Mustang’s fire had looked alive . It had snaked around Midoriya and All Might like it had a will of its own, as if it wanted to protect them and not just Mustang. It had roared to life down the stairs in a way that made Todoroki think that the fire was separate from the hero.
The moment Todoroki had seen the pop of fire struck the villain’s hand and saved Midoriya, panic had flared in his mind for a second. Fire was so intrinsically connected to his father that for a second he had thought that his father was at the USJ. He couldn’t even say why he had panicked. It hadn’t lasted longer than two seconds, seeing as how he was no longer afraid of the man.
Maybe the high of the battle had thrown him off course. Those two villains had been in a different class from the ones he’d dealt with in the earthquake zone on his own and he’d been unsettled after the Nomu had broken through his ice. He had been sure that All Might could take on the hands villain and warp gate villain, but then Midoriya had jumped into the battle before anyone could even blink. Midoriya would have died if not for Mustang’s intervention. Any of them could have -- that had been the villains’ plan -- but they hadn’t.
Mortality had already been ingrained in Todoroki’s head through his father’s constant training of him over the years, but none of his classmates had ever been forced to deal with it before. He wondered if any of them felt differently about wanting to become a hero after seeing what they would be forced to deal with. It was one thing to train to become a hero; it was another to face death head on. Even for Todoroki, it had felt different, but he’d been so in the moment that he hadn’t noticed it until after the fact.
Nonetheless, it wasn’t the fact that he could have been killed that stopped him. The villains that he’d dealt with on his own had been lower levels than him. He would’ve been humiliated and felt the urge to leave U.A. if he had let them beat him. Mustang’s quirk though set Todoroki on edge.
Was this why his father hated the man so much? Because he had different sort of power over his fire quirk? Because he was so strong? Was it just the fire itself? Endeavor had been the only hero around with a fire quirk until the Flame Alchemist showed up seven years ago. The idea of what they might be able to accomplish should they work together had come up in multiple interviews, all of which Endeavor had shut down aggressively. The hatred Endeavor held towards Mustang was different from the kind he held against All Might. It felt more personal.
And there was nothing so personal as fire, in Todoroki’s mind, as he struggled with it on a daily basis.
Without really thinking about it, Todoroki held up his left hand, palm up, and produced a flame a few inches over it. He could still remember fire hurting him when he was a child first learning his quirk. It had turned against him during the beginning of his training with Endeavor and he’d feared it. Nowadays, it didn’t hurt him anymore. The fire was nothing, just a warm breeze, but it was strange seeing it. He hadn’t produced an actual flame in months, using his left side for little more than to melt the ice he created with his right. Still, it came to him as naturally as breathing when he thought about it.
Before Todoroki could put the fire out or consider what he was doing, he heard someone exclaim, “Whoa! I’ve never seen you do that before!” and he glanced over to see Edward Elric staring at him an excited expression on his face.
Todoroki clenched his fist and the fire went out. Stupid. How could he have been so careless as to use the fire half of his quirk while at school? And right before a hero class too so that anyone could see him? Discomfort rattled inside of him as Edward walked over to him. His younger brother was behind him talking with Uraraka, Midoriya, and Iida. Only Edward appeared to have noticed what Todoroki had done.
“It’s nothing,” Todoroki decided on saying, despite the fact that it really wasn’t. At least not to him.
“It looked pretty cool to me, considering I’ve only ever seen you use the ice half of your quirk,” Edward pointed out. His tone was matter-of-fact, neither judging the fact that Todoroki only used his ice half nor saying that he should use his fire half more often. It was just something he’d noticed. “Seems like you’re not using your quirk to the best of your abilities if you only use half of it.”
Even though he knew that Edward was only making an observation, Todoroki bristled. Edward wasn’t trying to tell him how to use his quirk, not like Endeavor or even Mustang, but it still put him on edge. “How I use my quirk is up to me.”
Edward held up his hands in defense. “Okay, okay, sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it.” He dropped his hands and gave Todoroki a shrewd grin. “It’ll just make it easier to beat you.”
Todoroki narrowed his eyes, but didn’t say anything in response and it appeared as if Edward didn’t expect him to. The other boy turned back to his brother and friends, jumping into the conversation effortlessly as if he hadn’t been talking to Todoroki a second ago. For all of Edward’s hardheadedness, he did get along well with people when he wanted to, even if he did have a habit of inserting his foot in his mouth a lot. He had a lot of confidence that bordered on arrogance sometimes, but it wasn’t near as bad as Bakugou at least.
Just when Todoroki told himself to forget about USJ and turned away from the other students, he looked up and caught eyes with Mustang. The hero was teaching their class today, along with homeroom. How long had he been standing there? Had he seen Todoroki produce the flame? It was hard to tell with Mustang, who knew how to be even more closed off and cold than Todoroki.
However, when Mustang held up his hand and produced a similar flame, tilting his head, a hard look came over Todoroki’s face, lips pressed together and eyes flat, and he walked away. That was all Todoroki needed to see in order to know that his teacher had seen him. He didn’t know what Mustang’s response meant though. Was it a challenge? A question? But to what end? He’d sworn that he would never use his flames in combat and he wasn’t about to let that go.
And still, those flames rested in the back of his head, calling to him, demanding to be seen. It made him feel like he was burning from the inside out. From anger, frustration, insecurity -- he didn’t know and he loathed it more.

“Lion Heart” an Ede Valley story by Hedgehog.
Sonia’s head ached. It had been doing that a lot lately. But ever since the escape from St. Adelaide’s three days ago, it had been a non-stop, nearly incessant throbbing. She’d tried ibuprofen, maybe more than she should have as she got more desperate, but even four pills at once had done nothing.
Maybe it was her lack of sleep. The past two nights had been spent on Aurum the dragon librarian’s couch, amidst her hoard of ancient artifacts. The couch itself was lumpy and simply not designed to accommodate a sleeping human being. Being surrounded by ancient tomes of dark power, blood-rusted weapons of cursed aspect, and other items of various historical and occult significance certainly didn’t help either. But worst of all had been the dreams.
They had become even more vivid since the headaches began. Some were the same as usual: the city beneath the waves, the singing. But some were of a wholly different nature. She would dream that she was trapped somewhere cold and dark, where there was nothing and no one there. She would scream and scream, but no one would hear her.
Sonia would wake up in a cold sweat, sometimes even sit all the way up in bed—er, couch.
The others noticed her deteriorating condition quickly. The witch Cindy, her brother who had not been allowed inside, and two other men who she didn’t know, one with very pale skin and one who always seemed to be smiling, had come in every day to meet with Aurum and her small assistant Servus. They attempted to include her, as she was the only one among them who really knew the school and its layout.
But for the most part she was in too much pain to be any help. And she kept seeing things out of the corner of her eye. Sonia didn’t know what was happening to her, and it scared her.
Then, on the third night, it must have been worse than before, though when she woke up, she couldn’t even remember what her dreams had been. All she was left with was an utter feeling of loss and hopelessness and the tears streaming down her face. She must also have been making a lot of noise, because she wasn’t the one who had woken her up.
Servus, the small, expressionless boy, was shaking her. He didn’t say anything, he hadn’t uttered one word since she’d gotten here, but he almost looked concerned.
“Oh, I am sorry,” Sonia apologized, wiping away the tear tracks on her cheeks. “Did I disturb you?”
He just stared at her, as if pondering something. Then, in one small, awkward movement, he turned, and gestured to her.
“Do you… do you want me to follow you?” she asked.
Pausing, he turned back, waiting. Sonia stood, and after hesitating slightly at the sight of all the various sharp and/or dangerous things surrounding her, staring at her through their glass cases, she followed him.
The whole library seemed to be circular; the collection-cum-hoard spiraled downwards into the earth, and Sonia wondered if it ever actually ended. Just how deep could a thirst for knowledge be to have so many artifacts, books. The history of the world seemed to be contained here. Scrolls of papyrus were displayed next to Japanese tapestries. A roman gladius shared a case with an old Winchester. On and on it went, down down down into the earth.
She followed Servus until the walls ceased to be walls anymore, but raw stone. Finally, after what seemed like hours, Servus stopped. Not just stopped, froze. Like a statue.
Sonia followed his gaze, and her eyes fell upon a sword, encased in a slab of stone. Though the sword itself was only mildly impressive, with a few designs carved into its hilt, the reverence with which a spotlight had been placed upon it made it seem more so. What was even stranger was the huge, round chunk of stone around it, as if it had been carved from the floor of some cave and moved here.
She felt herself drawn to it, like some sort of magnet. Servus watched Sonia as she approached the sword, fascinated. “What is this?” she asked him, but of course, he didn’t respond.
Quite without conscious effort, Sonia found her feet moving her towards the sword. She scrambled up and over the rock, hovered there for a second, then put her hand on the sword’s hilt.
And nothing happened. The hilt was cold to the touch, but nothing more. She wasn’t sure why she had thought something would happen at all. Sonia sighed, made to turn, and screamed.
There, in the corner of the room, watching her, was a woman, glowing blue around the edges. Not just a woman, the woman, the one who had appeared to her several times now.
She didn’t react to Sonia’s scream, just glanced up at the sword with a hopeless expression on her face.
“Ti onw’t rokw,” her words were garbled and non-sensical.
“Why can’t I understand you?” Sonia asked. “Who are you?”
“Rmeuni. Npissrce fo Latnaist. Het elas sah relaayd eneb orebkn. I ma utske.”
“Interesting. Very interesting,” said a new voice, and Aurum emerged from the shadows. “Servus, did you lead her down here?”
The automaton blinked once.
Sonia almost let go of the sword, but Aurum threw out her hands. “Nonono! Don’t let go. Your contact with the sword is the only thing allowing me to see her.”
“Her?” Sonia’s eyes widened. “You mean, you can see her too? I am… I am not crazy?”
“I’ve sensed a strange presence ever since you’ve come here,” Aurum continued, approaching the figure. “But I never imagined…”
The figure didn’t seem to notice her. She just kept staring at Sonia.
Aurum didn’t seem to care. She grabbed a book from who knew where and began flipping through it. “If I’m not mistaken, that sword was the one used to seal away the Truth all those years ago, so if you touching it has summoned this spirit, then…”
Sonia had no idea what she was muttering about.
The dragon flipped the book to a specific page and held the book up to the figure’s face. “Yes!” she continued, laughing in near hysterics. “I can’t believe it. Yes!”
“What?” Sonia asked, growing nervous.
“Can you understand her?” Aurum insisted. “Do you know what she’s saying?”
“I… I-no, it is, it is just gibberish.” Sonia shook her head. “What is going on?”
“That sword, and that spirit, are very powerful,” Aurum said. “They could help us find the Truth.”
“The Truth?” Sonia blinked. “I am so confused.”
“You may be a vessel for an ancient hero,” Aurum said plainly. “That hero.” She pointed a long, red fingernail to the figure. “Tell me, do you know anyone who calls himself a… oh, what was it?” she muttered, glancing down at the page again. “Ah yes, a ‘warlock’?
“Gil!” Sonia’s eyes widened. “He’s my… my friend.”
Aurum practically jumped in the air, then grabbed Sonia by the shoulders. “Would you allow me to perform an experiment?”
“I… uh…”
“You won’t be in any danger. At least,” she blinked, “I don’t think you will.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Communicate with it. But I need your cooperation.”
“Al… right.”
This time she did jump into the air, then grabbed Servus’ hands and spun him around. He looked decidedly nonplussed. “I need a witch,” she said, half to herself. “A proper witch. I know! I’ll call Cindy. I… hope she’s not in bed yet.” She whipped back around to Sonia. “Could you meet us in the main room in twenty minutes?”
Sonia nodded numbly. She had absolutely no idea what was going on. And here she was about to be a guinea pig to two women she barely knew. Sonia wished that Niko wasn’t in the hospital, that she wasn’t surrounded by strangers, and that her damned head wasn’t trying to kill her. She almost collapsed right then and there from the stress of it all.
But then she saw the figure staring at her, a concerned expression on her face. “Why are you following me?” she asked. The figure did not respond, yet with a start, Sonia realized that now she might have a chance to get some answers. She just had to keep going a little while longer. As scary as it was, she had to put her life in Cindy and Aurum’s hands.
By the time she found her way out of the depths of Aurum’s hoard and back up to the library, Cindy was already there, her pajama bottoms peeking out from under her coat. She looked grumpy, but curious, and had apparently already been briefed on the circumstances. When Sonia emerged from the back rooms, Cindy was down on the floor, drawing an ornate circular design with chalk while Aurum was scrambling to and fro with a book in each hand, muttering half to Cindy and half to herself.
“There you are!” Aurum grinned, as she saw her enter. “Are you about ready, Cindy?”
“You’re not very patient, are you?” Cindy replied as she bit her lip in concentration.
“I can’t help it,” Aurum beamed, her glasses sliding an inch down her nose. “I never thought I’d get an opportunity like this. Imagine! The chance to speak to an actual Atlantean, especially one who was so close to the Truth.”
“Why didn’t you just ask Lucius to help then? I know he’d be more than interested.”
“Because he can’t make a magic circle.”
“Excuse me,” Sonia interrupted. “But did you just say ‘Atlantean’?”
Aurum approached her, drawing her closer to the chalk circle. All of this was frankly seeming more than a little insane to Sonia.
“Yes, dear. That’s where the sword is from.”
Sonia didn’t know why she spoke next, she had never told anyone about her dreams, not even Gil. “I’ve been having dreams, about lights beneath the sea. Like city.”
The librarian’s eyes grew so wide that Sonia was afraid that might pop right out of her skull. “Have you now?” she asked. “That’s brilliant. See, Cindy? I told you, didn’t I?”
“Whatever you say.” Cindy stood, and dusted off her hands. “Alright, it’s all ready.”
“What are you planning on doing?” Sonia hesitated.
“Just a magic-assisted trance-state,” Aurum waved the question off as if a “magic-assisted trance-state” was a perfectly normal response. “Sit right here in the middle of the circle, close your eyes, and listen to my voice.”
She did as she was told.
“Cindy, the incense please.”
Cindy snapped her fingers, and the candles around the circle came to life as a strong, musky smell filled Sonia’s nose. She closed her eyes, and Aurum began to speak.
She talked in a low, soothing voice, and as Sonia listened the incense began to make her feel light-headed. Cindy righted her once as she almost swayed into the candles. And then, at some point, she was someplace else.
It was one of her dreams. Sonia floated, a few feet above the water of an endless ocean. Below the surface, hundreds of blue and purple lights were coming to life. She watched them for a moment, mesmerized. But then, something happened which had never before occurred in one of her dreams. Someone spoke.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
Sonia looked down, and much to her surprise, replacing her reflection in the water was the woman, the figure who had followed her for months now.
“I haven’t seen those lights in so many years.”
“Is it… Atlantis?” Sonia’s tongue finally unstuck. “Did you live there?”
“Aye.” The figure nodded, her pale face glowing in the depths of the water. “My name is Muirne, Princess of Atlantis.”
“Aurum… er, friend of mine thinks that you are… hero of some kind.”
“I don’t know about that,” Muirne smiled sadly. “When you’re responsible for the destruction of an entire continent, most people don’t call you a ‘hero’.”
“What happened?”
She took a breath in, slowly. “My compatriot, a warlock named Gilveidan, and I faced a terrible evil, and in the process of sealing it away, sank the whole continent of Lemuria under the sea. Those lights you see? No one has lit them, they come to life as soon as the sun sets, automatically. They’re the last remnant of a great empire. Just ghosts, nothing more.”
But Sonia hadn’t even heard many of her words. “Gilveidan,” she said, instead. “You… know him?”
“Aye. And you seem to as well.”
“He’s my friend. He is just normal boy named Gil Trenton though. He likes to pretend he is powerful wizard.” Sonia smiled at the thought, before a frown crept back into her features. “But, he isn’t pretending, is he?”
“The man you know is not Gil Trenton. That boy died years ago. Gilveidan is just… using his body.”
Sonia looked down at the lights for a second. She knew that something had happened to that dorky, asthmatic boy she’d met all those years ago in that cave. Now she finally took a second to mourn Gil Trenton, probably the only person who ever had.
“I… am sorry,” Muirne said. “But you know what has to happen now, don’t you?”
“Gil Trenton was Gilveidan’s vessel,” Sonia replied. “And I’m yours.”
“It should have happened years ago,” Muirne confessed. “Before you’d had time to grow up, form wishes and dreams and friendships. That’s why your head feels like it’s going to split in two. You weren’t meant to last this long. If you go on much longer, you’ll die. And I can’t let that happen.”
Sonia hesitated. “I… I understand. It’s just that… I don’t want to go.”
Muirne blinked in sympathy. “None of us do. And I have no right to tell you what to feel. But Gilveidan is lost, I can feel it. And I know that I can save him.”
Drawing in a shaky breath, Sonia let out a small, choked noise. “I know,” she said. “I am not strong enough. I can’t do anything. But you can. Is it…?” she implored the water. “Is it selfish to keep hanging on? Even when you know it’s over?”
“Not at all.”
Sonia sobbed, her tears forming ripples on the ocean’s surface, making the lights dance. “Just. Promise me one thing.”
“Anything,” Muirne said.
“Tell Gil that I… I—” she broke off into a sob. She hugged herself, alone in this dark void. Would she be here forever? Alone, lost, with only the ghost lights for company?
Muirne nodded. She understood what Sonia meant. “I will. I promise.”
“Okay.” Sonia took one last, shuttering breath. “I’m ready.”
“Then come to me,” Muirne told her.
And as she had tried to do so many times in her dreams, Sonia reached down towards the water, towards the lights so far below as Muirne reached up to meet her. But this time she got closer, closer. Her hand broke the surface…
And everything stopped. From a long ways away, back in the library, the smell of incense burning her throat, she felt herself being stripped away. Her fears, desires, feelings, everything, consumed by a soul much stronger than her own.
And then there was nothing. For a time, there was void, and dark, and cold.
But through the nothing came a flash of red hair, and a voice:
“Do not be afraid. Follow me.”
~~ o ~~
Cindy, Aurum, and Servus watched Sonia for a good hour. Suddenly, the girl began to spasm, her eyes rolling back into her head. “Aurum, what’s happening?” Cindy stood.
“I… I don’t…”
But she didn’t have a chance to finish. Because just then, Sonia stopped, and lay still for a moment. Then, she lifted her head, and opened her eyes. They could tell immediately that she was not Sonia anymore.
But who was she? The answer came from a most unexpected place. Servus, who had never before done much of anything of his own accord or uttered a single word, kneeled in front of her, blinked once, and nearly smiled.
“Muirne.”

Grim
Tumblr media
He was blessed by the Arcanist. He was told he should be honored. That he was one of the lucky ones. But his head hurt. His body crackled with energy. His eyes could not contain the power within him, melting away his pupils, leaving him nearly blind. His vision is blurry and everything is filtered in pink. He would never see the full colors of the rainbow because of his 'gift'. His parents were so proud of their blessed son, they couldn't wait to teach him how to use his magic, but when he tried, he magic exploded out of control and he nearly killed the very dragons who loved him. He came to realize that his so called blessing was a danger to everyone around him. So he ran away. Far, far away from home. And he never made his way back.
He was captured by bandits. Bandits who were fascinated in his primal eyes and new what kind of power he held. They tried to use him for their own nefarious purposes, but his magic was even too unstable for a life of crime, so instead the bandits sold him. His new captor thought of themself as a collector of the unusual. And they considered primal dragons to be their prized items. They put Grim on display. He was nothing but a center piece for this dragon. He was something for others to marvel at. He had no feelings to them. He had no wants. No dreams. No fears. Only the most basic of needs were attended to. No one spoke to him while he was marveled at. Until one day, one dragon whispered to him. She was so quiet that Grim was convinced he imagined it at first. But then she spoke again, and her words brought with them a promise. A promise to free Grim. In exchange for a little magic. Grim accepted. Of course he did. He couldn't stand being an object any longer. But Grim was not a lucky dragon. The dragon broke him free yes, but he did not get his freedom. Instead he was taken to this dragon's lab, where he became her guinea pig. She wanted to see if it was possible to extract his magic to power bio weapons, among other things. Grim was cut with various equipment, stuck with needles carrying unknown substances within them, and had other unspeakable things done to him. All in the name of what this dragon considered 'science'. He was only saved when one of her experiments went horribly wrong. Magic she had extracted from him grew unstable and exploded, killing her, and finally giving Grim the chance to escape hell. Now an adult, Grim is alone, angry and distrustful. He believes the Arcanist had cursed him and has been watching his suffering. And Grim wants the Arcanist to suffer back.
