Ace: Is an absolute fiend on the teacups and knows which one spins the fastest (the orange diamond) and how to really get it spinning.

Deuce: Gets spun too fast on the teacups by Ace and throws up. When he feels better he enjoys being the Pilot on Smuggler's Run.

Cater: Documents the whole thing on Magicam in real time. He gets all of the classic shots, like the selfie in front of the castle, holding up the Dole Whip in front of the Tiki Room, etc.

Trey: Spends a lot of time on Main Street sampling all the different confectionaries. Also sits with Deuce after he throws up.

Riddle: Will ride the Alice in Wonderland ride and talk about all the historical inaccuracies to anyone who will listen.

Savannaclaw

Leona: He's been dragged here too many times with his nephew and made to ride all the kiddie rides, so he'd rather skip the whole thing and nap in the hotel room. But when he is inevitably dragged to the park, he enjoys the atmosphere of Adventureland and eats an unreal amount of meat skewers from Bengal Barbeque.

Ruggie: Doesn't go because it's too expensive. Nah I'm just kidding, he goes, but he definitely packs all his own food. Goes through the bakery tour and the Ghirardelli factory tour for the free bread and chocolate until he's told he can't have any more free samples.

Jack Howl: He likes Frontierland best, because it's the least crowded (and the cactus landscaping is exceptional).

Octavinelle

Azul: He's not big on rides, but he really enjoys scouring the historical showcases at the front of the park. As the owner of his own up and coming mega-conglomerate, he is eager to glean any information he can about the park and its rise to fame (and fortune).

Jade: He's very eager to get a selfie in from the yellow mushroom in Fantasyland, claiming its because of its historical significance. (Did you know it used to be a ticket booth?)

Floyd: Rides any and all of the roller coasters as many times as possible. Is not above pushing past little kids to run to the next ride.

Scarabia

Kalim: Is as excited as any kid there. Wants to see and do everything, and cries at the fireworks at the end of the day.

Jamil: Spends most of his time trying to keep up with Kalim and make sure he drinks some water once in a while. Enjoys the music and the parade more than he lets on.

Vil: Enjoys the park from under a sun parasol, UV shades, and a high SPF sunscreen. He HATES that Snow White's Scary Adventure has been turned into *~*Snow White's Enchanted Wish*~*. The kids of today are WEAK.

Rook: He is hunting aiming to meet as many characters as possible and get them to sigh in his hit signature book.

Epel: Makes it his goal to sample every kind of candy apple in each of its differently decorated forms (Poor bear apple, Mickey ears apple, marshmallow apple, baby yoda apple, etc). Also a roller coaster fanatic.

Ignihyde

idia: Rides Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blaster's over and over trying to beat the all time high score (it's his). Knows where all the best targets are and can turn the cart with one hand while shooting with the other. ("This is the OG of interactive rides, even though Toy Story Mania may be more modern, this ride paved the way. At the time getting your picture taken and sending it to friends via email was unheard of but this ride blah blah blah blah...)

Ortho: Enjoys Pirates of the Carribean for its theming and "primitive robotics". Likes Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln for the same reason.

Diasomnia

Malleus: Will purchase and consume a Mickey shaped ice cream bar at every opportunity (He knows where all the ice cream carts are by the end of trip). He finds Fantasia amusing and says that the dragon is a "passable likeness".

Lillia: He's amazed at how much the park has changed since he was last here ("Star Wars Land? That area used to be a petting zoo.") Enjoys Haunted Mansion and startling Sebek in the queue.

Sebek: "We need to make sure we use our Lightning Lane at precisely 3:30, and then we must get to Goofy's Kitchen immediately after for our character dining experience, after which we must reserve our spot for the fireworks..." He's extremely concerned with getting the most out of the trip and ensuring that Malleus has a good time (Malleus doesn't care).

Silver: Enjoys the Sleeping Beauty walkthrough, as it is dark, full of vintage charm, and uncrowded. Falls asleep before the fireworks ever start.

The producer of Willy’s Chocolate Experience has announced that the Roald Dahl rip-off will transfer to Broadway, with an opening-night performance slated for April 25 at 11pm — just in time for Tony Awards consideration.

The interactive show made international headlines in February when it played a warehouse in Glasgow. Lured by AI-generated images of a fantastical candy wonderland, Scottish ticket-buyers plunked down £35 each to enter the workshop of “Willy McDuff,” a whimsical chocolatier assisted by green-haired “Wonkidoodles” and haunted by “The Unknown,” a rival candy-maker who inhabits the walls of the factory.

Haunting Your Character with a Ghost (or Wound)

In storytelling, a character’s ghost is a past, significant (and often traumatic) event that shaped his worldview in a thematic way. It prepares the character arc and works as a motivator. Choose the appropriate ghost for your character and learn how to reveal it to the audience. (article written by @septembercfawkes​ )

It’s finally the month of Halloween! And if you are like me, you’ve been chomping at the bit to get those spooky Halloween decorations up (or . . . maybe like me . . . you already cheated and started putting them up last month). In any case, talking about your character’s haunting ghost or bleeding, holey wound seems like the perfect topic to kick off a writerly October (and a great way to prep for NaNoWriMo November).

What do I mean by “ghost”? Am I saying that your character has a ghost following him around?

Not literally.

But . . . in a sense, yes, figuratively.

In writing, a “ghost” is a past, significant (and often traumatic) event that shaped his worldview in a thematic way. It’s almost always the most important part of your character’s backstory.

Examples of Characters' Ghosts

In Get Out, Chris is haunted by the night he didn't phone for help when his mother didn't come home from work--which indirectly led to her death.

In Frozen, Elsa is haunted by the fact she accidentally froze Anna when they were children.

In I, Robot, Del is haunted by the reality that a robot saved him over a 12-year-old girl.

In Finding Nemo, Marlin is haunted by the barracuda attack that killed his family (except Nemo).

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Willy Wonka is haunted by his father burning his Halloween candy (see, told you I was in a Halloween mood).

If this concept sounds vaguely familiar to you, you’ve probably been introduced to it by another term. The ghost is also often called the “wound.” Same concept, different terms. Because it’s October, we are going with “ghost” today.

Regardless, the important thing to remember here, is that the ghost isn’t a person or some other supernatural entity, it’s an event (or in some cases, a string of events). It’s often a critical component of character arc (even if the ghost doesn’t actually manifest on the page) and therefore theme, so let’s get out our Ouija boards and channel the spirits—er, I mean, delve deeper into ghosts!

Spooking Your Character with a Ghost

Most protagonists will start the story with a flaw, weakness, or misbelief that they must overcome by the end. This is what creates a positive change arc (we’ll talk about other arcs in a bit).

The ghost is the event where that flaw, weakness, or misbelief originated.

Often the character (like all of us) started with a—more or less—innocent view of life.

Then BAM! Something unforeseen, something significant, something traumatic happened.

The robot let a 12-year-old die. A barracuda killed his family. His father tossed the candy corn, suckers—and worst of all—chocolate into the fire!

Life is not what he thought.

As the character tries to make sense of what happened, as he tries to cope with the trauma, he comes to a conclusion about life—the wrong conclusion.

Del will never trust robots.

Marlin believes danger is ever present—he must be over-protective.

Willy Wonka decides family isn’t important.

Each of these characters must overcome this flaw, weakness, or—perhaps most accurately said—misbelief about life to become a better, more whole person, who has a chance to beat the antagonistic force.

In a sense, the ghost is where the need for a character arc took place.

Quick Key Features of a Character’s Ghost

The ghost almost always happens in the past.

In fact, it is almost always the most important (or only pertinent) element of your character’s backstory. On rare occasions, the ghost may take place within the novel itself, which you may find in an origin story. If so, as K. M. Weiland points out in her book Creating Character Arcs, it’s usually part of the first act.

The ghost is an event . . . or a string of connected events.

It’s most common for a ghost to be a single moment—Chris’s mom not coming home and dying, or Elsa freezing her little sister. But it can also be a series of events. In Harry Potter, Severus Snape’s ghost is a series of events that cover his relationships with Lily and James. Despite how different the events may appear on the surface, they are all ultimately connected into one single haunting ghost story.

Ghosts are most often tied to protagonists, but any character can have a ghost.

. . . as evidenced by my examples. In fact, some argue that every character has a ghost, because every person has his or her worldviews shaped by significant events. The catch is, in a story, we won’t know or cover every ghost (nor does the writer need to develop and know every character’s ghost).

Ghosts often lead to poor coping mechanisms.

In The Structure of Story by Ross Hartmann, Hartmann points out that Marlin’s trauma from the barracuda attack led him to constantly cope by being over-protective. Likewise, Elsa’s trauma leads her to cope by isolating herself.

Frequently, ghosts are very dramatic—a death, an accident, abuse—but they don’t have to be.

Something like your sibling becoming famous (which happens to Tahani in The Good Place) or your dad burning your candy can be enough to shift a worldview. It can even be something seemingly positive, such as a child receiving praise for getting straight A’s . . . which leads her to the misbelief she’s only valuable if she’s smart.

The ghost can be almost anything—it just needs to be something that significantly changes your character’s worldview in a thematic way.

Motivating Your Character with a Ghost

At the most basic level, the ghost acts as a motivator.

It’s why Elsa isolates herself and hides her powers. And it's why Kuzco in The Emperor’s New Groove is selfish (he was constantly spoiled as a child). It’s also why Katniss is so driven to survive (she nearly starved to death when her dad died and had to be saved by Peeta’s burned bread).

The ghost explains to the audience why this character behaves this way, and gives the character a reason to behave that way.

Positive and Negative Impacts of Ghosts

Most often, the ghost will have a negative impact on the character, but it’s possible it can lead to positive outcomes. Tahani’s famous sister leads her to be charitable ( . . . though admittedly, for the wrong reasons). In Zootopia, everyone tells Judy a bunny can’t be a cop, which motivates her even more to become one. And Fox Mulder is motivated to work the X-Files because of his sister’s abduction.

So, a negative ghost can motivate the character to do something positive, just as a seemingly positive ghost can motivate a character to do something negative. In my earlier example of a child getting straight A’s, the child may now decide to start cheating in order to continue getting straight A’s.

There are a lot of different ways the ghost and its impact can manifest, so to keep it simple, remember this: It's the motivator of the dominant worldview and quality of the character.

Selecting the Appropriate Ghost for Your Character’s Arc

The majority of stories feature a positive change-arc protagonist. This means that most often, the ghost will be an event that led to a flawed worldview, which gave the character an unhealthy coping mechanism. This is what the character needs to arc out of.

But wait—there are three other types of basic arcs. What about their ghosts?

Depending on what kind of arc you are writing, the character’s ghost may be a little different.

Ghosts for Positive Steadfast Character Arcs (Flat Arcs)

If the character has a positive steadfast arc (also known as a “flat arc”), the character will hold—more or less—the same accurate worldview at the beginning of the story as she does at the end of the story. Fox Mulder is a good example of this. From the beginning of The X-Files, he believes the truth is out there, and he upholds that worldview despite everyone trying to get him to abandon it. Other popular examples of this arc include Job from the Old Testament, Diana in Wonder Woman, and Ella in Disney’s live-action Cinderella.

In such cases, the ghost is usually whatever led the character to adhere to that accurate belief in the first place. Samantha’s alien abduction is what cemented Mulder to the (accurate) belief that the government is covering up the truth. For Ella, her mother encouraging her to be kind while on her deathbed is what cemented Ella to believing in the power of kindness.

Ghosts for Negative Change Character Arcs

In a negative change arc, the character starts with an accurate worldview. But then they come to adopt a moral flaw, weakness, or misbelief. This is the opposite of the positive change arc. Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith is a famous example. If you wanted to include a ghost for your negative change character, it would be similar to the positive steadfast ghost. It would be an event that gave him the positive belief system he has in the beginning.

Ghosts for Negative Steadfast Character Arcs

In a negative steadfast arc, the character will start with a flaw, weakness, or misbelief. But they will refuse to arc out of it, and therefore remain negative. Estella in Cruella and Javert in Les Mis are good examples. If you wanted to give your character a ghost, it would be similar to the positive change arc ghost. It would be an event that gave him the negative belief system he has in the beginning.

In theory, anyway—all of these “rules” can and have been broken, and you will run into variations from time to time.

But to keep it simple, remember this. The ghost is the reason your character starts with whatever worldview she has at the story’s beginning.

When and How to Reveal Your Character’s Ghost

Since the ghost is usually in backstory, it can be difficult to know how or when to reveal it to the audience. Writing instructors constantly advise others to write stories in the present, but this event happened in the past.

There are a few options:

Reveal the ghost in dialogue

One character opens up to another character and tells her ghost story. Or, alternatively, someone else tells her ghost story to another character.

Recount the ghost in narration

The viewpoint character can briefly summarize his ghost in the prose.

Relive the ghost in a flashback

Many instructors discourage flashbacks, and for good reason. But if anything deserves to be in a flashback, it’s the ghost story. In fact, if you pay attention, most all flashbacks you encounter will be ghost stories. If your character's ghost is worthy of dramatization, consider carefully writing a flashback.

Render the ghost in a prologue

This approach is more popular in film than in books. I would recommend only using this on rare occasions. In any case, sometimes a story will start with the ghost, then jump to the "present" in chapter one.

While not every story will include a ghost, haunting your character with one can add depth and authenticity. It will also explain their behaviors, reinforce their motives, and contribute to theme.

I love those boys, and Red Flags is to this day (and probably will forever be) my favourite thing I've ever written it is a combined effort of labour and love with me and my bestie thirstworldproblemss, and it holds the most special place in my heart.

I have so many recs for other writers, because there's such a talented treasure trove on here. This list was originally much much longer but tumblr glitched on me (ERASED THE WHOLE POST) after I spent half an hour on it and now I've lost my will to live.

I have a FNAC 2 oneshot request, being Withered New Candy x Nightguard! Gender Neutral! Reader.

Y/N lost the bet so they have to spend their first night at the abandonned factory, but when they realize they aren't alone, they panic. When they notice it is Candy and Co, they have a flashback to themselves when they were a child, loving to spend time in Candy's restaurant, where they lost their toy, but Candy finds it and brings it back to Y/N.

They are happy to see them again, but when Candy attacks them, not recognizing them, Y/N panics, thinking it was their time to die. But at the last moment, Candy's remaining eye remembers Y/N, remembering finding their lost toy, and hugs Y/N, as he's happy to see them again.

And it ends with Y/N meeting Cindy and the rest of the gang, happy to meet their heroes once again. :)

"You kidding? They couldn't have bothered to turn on the lights for me?" Annoyed, you just shook your head in dismay, flickering on the cheap company-owned flashlight you owned and looking down the dark hall.

After losing a bet to your fellow coworkers, you were forced to take over the nightshift at Rowboatics Corp. Factory for an entire week.

Whoever last worked here was kind enough to leave you a note on how all the phone lines and the security camera system were still online. But the final line had you confused:

"Make sure nothing gets in or out"

Obviously, you understood that meant no unauthorized personnel were allowed inside....but as to what could possibly get out remained a mystery to you.

Then again, they were probably another coworker who was convinced this place was "haunted" at night. And you're not entirely opposed to that idea considering its history of casualties.

You recalled reading an article on two young twins who somehow snuck in here, only to get killed by the animatronic assembly machine. The nightguard at the time apparently fell asleep, unaware of what was happening until it was much too late.

Although you wondered how and why two little kids would ever go to such a creepy factory all by themselves, you knew you couldn't make that same mistake. So you made sure to stay awake the entire night by any means neccessary.

For now though, all was quiet. You just relaxed in your chair, pulling up the security feed to survey the building's layout. You weren't a fan of the fact that you were stationed in the central hall with so much space....but you had nobody to complain to except yourself.

'At least it's not a claustrophobic office space..though I'd feel slightly safer...' You thought, before shrugging it off.

As half an hour passed...nothing remarkable happened. The only things you saw on the cameras were rats scurrying out from the shadows, sneaking under shelves and crates and whatnot.

When 1AM rolled around, however---

[CONNECTION LOST]

The camera you were viewing abruptly went offline, startling you. And you wondered if somebody else was here trying to sabotage the footage.

What if there were robbers?

You weren't exactly trained to deal with that.

[RECONNECTING...]

When the system rebooted, you nearly jumped out of your skin upon seeing...Candy?

No. It was Cindy.

You recognized her by the lavender fur. She was staring right up at the camera lens, and you could see the damage to her body done by time and improper upkeep: evident by her exposed endoskeleton pieces and the fact she was missing an eye.

'How is she still active?' Bewildered, you just stared right back at her, before finally realizing this is what the note warned you about:

The animatronics. They shouldn't get out for any reason.

And there's probably a reason why the phones were left on, as they were able to easily lure Cindy to them..

In order to keep them as far away from you as possible.

...........

The second night at Rowaboatics was more or less the same, except Chester started walking around, attempting to break into one of the vents that led directly to your office space. He was trying to tear the grate off, and he almost succeeded-

Until you rang the phone to startle him out of the room, running so fast he was almost like a blur.

Eventually, he found another way to you and showed up in the central hall for the first time. You were in disbelief at his even worse condition: the material around his upper face was completely gone, leaving his endoskeleton head visible and no eyes at all.

It was creepy as shit, but luckily he didn't get any closer to your desk, as you discreetly called another phone line and he followed the sound.

Somehow you fooled him yet again.

Of course, the animatronics would always go to rooms where noise was loudest. It was coded into them, so they couldn't resist it even if they knew nobody else was here but you.

Cindy, on the other hand, was a bit of a nuisance in that she'd try to temporarily cut off power to those phones, but you've anticipated her path in the factory, so she was easy to keep at bay.

It was the third night when things started to get real.

And by that, it meant Candy himself activated and joined the fray, aimlessly wandering the facility until he became aware of your presence. He was in a similar condition as his sister, but obviously wasn't looking to spend any time with her or sing little duets.

He was trying to get to you by any means necessary.

While making you feel uneasy, seeing him and the rest of the gang walking around does bring a smile to your face, taking you back to a happier time...

A time that made you feel like you had a genuine connection with these characters, especially the mascot himself..

"Where is it?! I know it was here!!!"

There you were, little panic-striken you, running around the Candy's Burgers & Fries' dining room like a headless chicken as you searched high and low for your missing plushie.

You left it on your seat by accident, remembering it just as you got into the car. Luckily, your guardian allowed you to go back inside to search, but only for five minutes. And as those minutes ticked down, you worried that you'll never get to see it again...especially when you saw it disappeared from the seat.

But before you could get too upset, you heard familiar thumping mechanical footsteps and turned around, looking up at Candy. Your eyes shimmered with hope that he could help you out. He didn't seem like he had a show to run to, thank goodness.

"Candy!! H-Have you seen the toy I left right here? It looks like..." You trailed off, watching as he kneeled down in front of you, smiling as he moved his hand out from behind his back to reveal....

Your long lost plushie!

"That's it!! Thank you! Thank you, Candy!!" You grinned, taking it from him.

He nodded, but before he could stand back up, you hugged him around the neck. You didn't care if it was against the rules to touch the animatronics..you were just too happy right now to worry about an adult scolding you.

Candy didn't seem to mind it at all, as he hugged you back just as tightly, smiling from ear-to-ear.

"Of course, little kit! Your best pal Candy will always be here to help!"

"I'm here to help-p-p-"

"Ah!!" Jumping at the loud clanking footsteps, you were snapped out of reminiscence and stared straight ahead at the withered mascot, who somehow got into the hall.

His voice was miraculously still functioning, but you weren't smiling at all this time around.

Considering the way he looked at you with such a dead one-eyed stare...it's obvious he didn't recognize you whatsoever.

You tried calling one of the phones, yet he didn't react to the noise at all. For a moment his head did twitch, as though trying to resist his programmed response to search for it.

Unfortunately for you, he succeeded.

You were in his sights and he couldn't be fooled this time around.

He stalked closer and closer to your desk. You knew you couldn't run anywhere, as another animatronic could catch up to you easily, so you tried staying as still as possible.

'Shit..this is what I get for daydreaming on the job..' You shuddered, wondering what was going to happen next.

Was he going to attack you? Kill you?

You didn't think that would be possible for a robot that's made to protect guests and employees of a children's restaurant....

But as Candy lurched forward and slammed his hands onto the desk, growling mechanically, you realized those protocols were most likely corrupted. For all he knew, you were a dangerous criminal who was going to cause trouble in this factory.

And he was ready to eliminate the threat.

There was nothing but an old desk protecting you from him.

Yet you were too afraid to look away, fearing he'll lunge if you made any sudden movements. But while staring back at him, you noticed his remaining eye continuously focusing, his pupil size shifting. You could hear the clicking of his jaw as it opened and closed, recognizing this as the animatronic's way of scanning somebody's potential criminal database.

Then....

He spoke again, sounding less threatening and more like his old self.

"[Y/n]...? L-L-Little...kit....?"

At first, you were in total shock, before a huge smile overtook your face. "Y-Yeah..it's me, Candy." You answered nervously. "You..remember me?"

As it turns out, his memories weren't lost after all, as he stood up straight and smiled back, nodding his head. You couldn't contain your joy and relief that he recognized you, hopping out of your seat to hug him.

He was surprised, but soon hugged you right back. It was quick one in case his joint motors locked up or accidentally crushed you, though he felt happy to share a hug with one of his favorite patrons again.

"Look at you..all-l-l grown up.." He marveled as he let you go, identifying the name tag on your security jacket. "A nightguard?"

"Yep. I'm a guard now." Chuckling, you looked around the facility, frowning slightly when you gazed back at Candy's withered condition. "What happened to you guys? Did they just...forget to fix you?"

"..fix us....? No...we were too broken to them-m-m." He shook his head. "Too dangerous...too unstable..."

"Dangerous? Unstable? You? I don't buy it." You huffed, unable to believe the technicians simply gave up on repairing them. "Nothing's ever "too broken" to fix."

".....that's what I-I told them....but-t...as time went on, we lost hope..." He sighed, before he perked up, his ears twitching as his smile returned. "But now you're here, [y/n]....and...they want to see you. Come on-n-n!"

With excitement in his glitchy voice, Candy began walking away, and you hesitantly followed him. You kept the flashlight with you, unsure of where he was leading you to.

Though when you heard more animatronic noises, you stopped short, fear seizing every inch of you. "C-Candy, I don't think it's a good idea. They don't remember me like-"

"We haven't seen a h-human in a long time, but o-once they see you...they'll remember-r-r," he promised. "My friends a-and I will keep you safe."

While you were still uncertain about trusting him this quickly, you bravely entered the room behind him, immediately seeing Cindy, Chester, Blank, and Penguin all gathered there.

The latter two were in horrible condition, with the drawing animatronic's usual doodles being washed off, and the poor waiter's sweet blue eyes and beak being completely gone.

Yet true to their leader's word, they expressed no hostilities towards you unlike they did the first two nights.

In fact they acted the exact opposite, being happy that the child who used to visit them was now working at the factory--although you didn't have the heart to tell them you only took this shift because of a stupid bet.

But maybe losing that bet wasn't so bad after all.

This place wasn't haunted. It was just full of lonely, broken animatronics who hoped to see their best friend again; animatronics who needed a light in their dark, dark world...

And you brought that back to them.

Back in the day I was friends with Nick.Groff from Ghost.Adventures on face.book and one summer we had just gone to Fort.Erie, and we had our own experiences there. We even had the same tour guide as the GAC team. But I messaged Nick.Groff about Fort.Erie and how haunted it was and that the team should check it out. The next season that aired had a Fort.Erie episode!!! No longer friends with Nick on face.book because the man went squirrely. I don't blame the GAC crew for continuing without him. ---

Why am I struggling with this... sitting here for an hour trying to think of things to write out??? Who the heck am I. uhhhh-- I love the idea of the ocean. The deep sea creatures and the colourful coral reefs! Meanwhile I am TERRIFIED of outer space. Which is ironic because we know more about space than the sea.

A Violet Story

I've never thought I'd be the sentimental type but here we are. You'd think saving the world and settling down to a ship of your own, a work-when-you-want job, and seemingly endless resources for your hobbies would be enough to feel nice and fulfilled. The peace that I helped foster should have been reward enough, especially with how much I bitched and moaned every step of the way. That's what a hero would say. The doors my talents and accomplishments have opened for me so that I could live the life I'd dreamed would be enough for the old me. Being left the fuck alone to do whatever I want whenever I want. 

All of it feels really fucking empty. 

I sighed as I swirled the last bit of whisky around the bottom of my glass. Leonnioux, the Ishgardian Lord turned bartender, seemed to be focused on some young Auri girl in a booth, neglecting to keep my glass from emptying. It didn't bother me though. He was usually attentive enough and offered small talk as needed. Anything more than that I'd probably find myself a new bar…though perhaps that wasn't out of distaste for conversation but that I had discovered he married my half-brother's husband when being shown our family registry. I'd let that cat out of the bag in Doma and wasn't about to be shuttered out of my favourite haunt by being the one to bring this 10-gil romance novel to the poor Lord’s door.

Still, it would be nice to have someone to talk to. Everyone has somewhere to be. U'rahn finally gets to be a baby factory. Jannie is getting married. The Scions come and go with their requests but now that there's nothing really keeping us together I get to be alone with who I thought was the best company: myself.

 It turns out…I’m kind of awful company.

This isn't all bad news though. It turns out, I know my friends really love me to put up with me and still want to be around when they can. I don't resent them for their happiness. I'm excited to see Rahn be a goofy dad and Jannie is finally doing things for herself. Such silly thoughts that bring a smile to my lips…and still, for now I'm on the peripheral and need my own thing. 

The research team here at GA seemed a good start but how do you bridge that gap when you've been willfully unapproachable for so long and when you've finally got your head out of your ass too much is going on to make things right? “Hi. I'm Violet. I'm sorry I was an ass before and I know someone’s just launched themselves into void for whatever reason but would you like to go get drinks and maybe do a work hang because I'm a lonely twenty-something that just realised maybe having friends to share things with isn't the boogeyman I made it out to be?” Yeah. That's real natural. 

Even if I did just open myself up, who would I even approach? Everyone seems to have their entourage or are too hyper focused in their projects to attempt to bother with my sudden social cravings. Well, save one or two. There was one though…if I remembered right. Another Limsan.

I swirled my glass again, this time to find Leonnioux standing behind the bar, sliding me a mug of my favored ale in his polite way to tell me I should start easing up. I thanked him of course before holding my hand up.

“Hey. You're familiar enough with the company roster? There's a girl that comes in here. Limsan with like bad ass aetheric tattoos on her face and runs with the science crew,” I asked.

“Apple Silverberg. Dark Maelstrom with two candied gingers instead of one ,” he said thoughtfully.

If he wasn't so painfully in love with that damn Miqo'te I'd jump him. There's nothing hotter than an encyclopedia, especially a bartending one. 

“Right. How did I forget a name like that,” I sighed, watching as Leonnioux ‘s gaze went from me to my drink and back to me.

“It's a mystery.”

“Wow. That was really fucking catty. You do have some bite under that highborn wall afterall.”

I  smiled to assure him I took no offense. I know what I'm about. He looked a bit relieved, if I had to guess the joke was testing how familiar he could get with his regulars. Turning away to wash glasses, he left me to my thoughts.

Apple. Fellow Limsan and research team member and…that's all I got. Still, she seemed to have the greatest chance of understanding me. I'd have to-

Of course it would be her. What a fucking terrible sense of humour fate has. My path to friendship of course was the big bad of the week and gave me a nasty scar to mark the occasion. It wasn't my first choice of a friendship meet-cute but at least it'll be an interesting one to laugh about later.

After the big fight I found myself being stitched up in the infirmary and settling in along with Apple’s friends and our coworkers to make sure she was going to be okay. It felt a bit weird at first but after we put together all the vibes we got from collectively Echoing off her I felt more certain that we'd get along.

 I'd tried not to be much of a bother as we waited. My only imposition had been to dip into the aetheric weave and call upon anyone that might help bring her comfort. A man had come, telling me to find an old stuffed Moogle on her house boat. Once cleared to leave, I went to retrieve the toy to bring it back. 

Most had gone for the night save for Zoissette. There was a seemingly appreciated silence between us as we let Apple rest. When Apple finally did stir, I found myself unable to explain my presence. I found myself saying the first thought that came to mind and rudely said, “It’s about time you woke up.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE late prompting night you know what Not Cold Enough for Fucking Winter time it is now: Vi enduring through the cold seasons while in Stillwater, thinking about her lost sister and family.

A/N: Response delayed due to Christmas Festivities

When Vi had woken up in that shitty cell, without a clue how she got there and where Powder was, she had been given a number and zero answers.

Memories of blue sparks and her brothers' broken bodies bleeding haunted her dreams, and images of Powder in Silco's hand caused her to wake up screaming.

Soon, Vi began to learn. She knew which fellow prisoners were Silco's, and she beat them for information about her sister.

"Where's Powder?" she yelled as she slammed a fist into one's gut before she was dragged away to solitary by the guards.

"Fucking addict," one said as he spat at the side.

The second thing she learned was how damn cold Stillwater was. Topside bad been slightly cooler, with a breeze going over it and without the heat that all the crammed bodies and factory steam the Undercity had. But Stillwater was another level, in the middle of the river and with the winds blowing constantly.

"The windows are only nice in summer, otherwise they're a death sentence," another inmate said. A more pleasant one whom Vi could talk with, on occasion, and who felt the need to explain a few things.

Vi put her spoon into the gruel, and ate another bite. It was not nearly as good as anything Vandar made, and sometimes prisoners ended up spending the rest of the day on the toilet when the food was particularly bad.

At midwinter, Vi remembered her parents scrounging up their money to use what little time off they had to show her and Powder around the decorations. The mines were incredibly busy this time of year, though factories and mines sometimes gave off on Midwinter itself. There were candies and treats, even sometimes a candied citrus peel if they were really lucky.

Vandar tended to dress up the Last Drop for it. Bluebirds were strung up, as were little suns to signify the growing light. There would be hot wine and mead, along with warm cider and spiced teas for her and her siblings. The weather in the Lanes never got more than a bit chilly, but sometimes they would climb to the top of the Promenade and feel the snow, as ash grey as it could be.

In Stillwater, the prisoners remarked to each other, "Happy Midwinter." It would be colder for a couple months still, and maybe more sunlight would filter through the windows. It was all the same.

Vi would sacrifice a goat if that's what it took to get back and find Powder. She continued to do push ups just to keep warm.
