*if your gender and sexuality brought on different feelings, vote for whichever you want. (whichever feeling was stronger, or first, or however you want to decide).
If you’re comfortable with it, put your sexuality and/or gender identity in the tags along with the feeling you experienced upon discovering it so we can see if any trends appear with correlations between certain identities and feelings!

my collection of underappreciated characters that i need to see get focus in season four or else i will start sobbing uncontrollably

#inanimate insanity#i especially wanna see more walkie talkie now that The Jig Is Up and they don't have to write around the twist#(spoilers ahead)#sometimes i think about how a lot of dialog implies that she's either aware that she and the rest of the cast were created by mephone#or is at least starting to catch onto what's going on#again i gotta rewatch season three since i'm the least familiar with it out of all the seasons#but like. WHAT does she know that we don't .#did she only start figuring things out after the show must go on or did she know the whole time#girl. WHAT is your deal.#another thing i want answers for. why is springy so fucked up and pibby-esque compared to the rest of the cast#my theory is that they were one of mephone's first creations so they're a lil bit Jank#idk man!!! i miss my abominations#do you guys think that a mentally unstable nonbinary capitalist and a pro-ai techbro girl can find love.........#i need to write walkiespringy toxic yuri. i need people to see my vision

just finished Nimona… DAMN does it feel good to watch such an openly queer movie man
#i haven’t read the graphic novel (though now I plan to!) so these are just my observations from the movie but#nimona is fucking trans & nonbinary man#like so fucking openly. refusing to answer balistair’s small minded questions and simply replying ‘i’m Nimona!’#chef’s kiss. absolutely fucking astounding. the nonbinary/genderqueer experience in a nutshell#you cannot and will not pin me down !#and obviously the major themes of being the odd one out among a whole society of people perceived as ‘normal’. wow that hit close to home!#and if the aggressively queer themes weren’t enough we have ambrosius and balistair too <3 like fuck yeah give us that on screen couple !#overall… enjoyed it so very much#a new comfort movie perhaps…..#oh and don’t think i missed that pride flag in the credits lmaooo absolutely iconic#jay rambles#nimona#nimona spoilers

for real WHERE does the idea that [utdr humans] are nongendered so that "you can project on them" come from. their literal character arcs are about NOT being a blank slate to be filled in by the audience
i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).
of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.
i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.
but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.
anyone who makes this argument for kris deltarune is braindead. nothing else to say about it.
#this is a very difficult topic to discuss imo because on Some level I don't completely disagree with people who make that argument for chara#in SPIRIT. if not in action. like my point still stands characters can just Be neutral. and if that level of customization had been intended#well Pokemon's been doing the ''are you a boy or a girl'' shtick for ages. no reason why that couldn't have been included as well#but i do feel that we're supposed to identify with chara within the story. not as in chara is us but as in we are chara#and i think someone playing the game without outside interferences and (wrongly) coming to the conclusion that chara IS literally#themselves in the story. and thus call them by their own name (the one they likely inputted at the start) and pronouns#will be someone who grasped undertale's metanarrative more than someone who went in already spoiled on the NM route who thinks of chara#(and on some level frisk as well) as completely separate from us with independent wills and personhoods at any time#who treats them as nonbinary. even if their approach is more ''appropriate'' to a gender neutral person#systematic error vs manually changing every measure to fit what you already think is going to be the correct result. ykwim?#of course this opens a whole new parentheses while discussing the game outside of your personal experience#because even if you DO see chara as a self insert then they are a self insert for EVERYONE. women men genderqueer people#i don't call chara ''biscia'' even though that's what i named the fallen human in my playthrough. neither do i use they because i also do#if you're describing the character/story objectively in how they are executed then you're going to talk about them neutrally#because you ain't the only sunovabitch who played the darn game sonny#so like. either way you turn it. even in the most self insert reading you'd STILL logically use they/them so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ git gud#answered asks

i cant believe i wasn't following u b4,,,,,ive just been silently scrolling through your blog for like a solid YEAR and just haven't even noticed????? n e ways what are tha thoughts on literally anyone in p4 being trans bc i live for that 🎤
the way my brain decided that this was asking for pronoun headcanons and did not reread to make sure that was what you were asking before drawing all of this…... well anyways
#asks & requests#p4#trans naoto#<- trans everyone lmaooooo#sort of waffling on chie-- he could also be trans or enby easily#ive always thought he would be a 'my gender is lesbian' type person tho LMAO#if hes trans then she and yukiko are as close as they are because trans friends lmao if chie is afab then i think that would come up#accepting his shadow- part of him not feeling 'feminine' enough is that yukiko is more of a woman than her in societys eyes and well.#its not a violent outing bc no one who heard her shadow is like that but chie apologises to yukiko for that#yukiko transitioned pretty early so no one in town (school age at least) really knows#rise is afab its just that she Despises the idea of being a man#kanji is cis but hes cis+ after exploring; does do the occasional drag but is a gay man who happens to use she/her#yosukes whole vibe is 'probably nonbinary but i have a job so i cant worry about that rn'. also i think maybe bigenderism in his future#he/him only for the foreseeable future tho. baby steps#narukami is defo stealth mode for at least the beginning of the game but probably around teddie or naotos shadow she comes out#and i like kuma so ze is like me and uses it/its. :).#ok those are all my notes. sorry for not directly responding to what you asked but i do think what i said is a good answer to your wuestion.#for claritys sake i also live for it.

The "just not the dub" in your tags, thanks 🙏. (I do think the dub has its place and it's got some stuff but it's not necessarily the same show. And the original is just superior when it comes to the emotional beats. The dub I think tried too hard to be "funny" and it kinda took away some of the characters' good qualities (esp Reki imo).)
tbh ironically reki is the one character who i think suffers least from the dub because when the script is good his performance is generally really good on a technical level and pretty fitting to the character's original tone, and he seems to have suffered from the least like... active material changes to his characterization, i guess because no one really had any problems with reki lol
but saying "when the script is good" is kind of fraught in the first place, because untangling the absolute mess of the general scriptwriting from the intentional character changes from the actors improvising with no oversight is such an overwhelming task i've tried to break it down and given up multiple times already, so even generally feeling like reki was the character who had the best transition to dub he's still held down by being in this dub
i do think it can have some entertainment value just to watch a bit here and there to hear the characters speaking english but the fact that they self-admittedly completely rewrote characters and altered the script to the point of changing the actual plot and themes of the show just kind of supersedes the few praiseworthy things it's got, because it's treated as an equal and equivalent way of enjoying the story and it's just... really functionally not the same story. and now the fandom is full of people going solely off the dub and thinking it's the same story and projecting that back on the original text or gleefully praising the dub's (again, admitted) efforts to "improve" the source material and "make it gayer" by adding fanservice while censoring the actual text. it doesn't even hold up for a theoretical accessibility use case, before you even get to the story changes, because important information in the visuals that's conveyed in characters' dialog and tone in japanese gets completely cut or lost in english.
i can't stop people from enjoying it obviously but i wish there could at least be an understanding that it's not the same show and shouldn't be discussed as if they're interchangeable, and i'm always going to put disclaimers like that on any kind of recommendation because the original story is what i'm recommending and the dub isn't that. i love the original show and i want people to experience that as nearly as they possibly can, not someone's smug fanfiction pasted over the original animation.
#answered#ninamyyly#dub discourse#time for specterthief's opinions#the official subs also aren't Good but that is definitely the fault of the circumstances they were done in#(non-native english speaker working on a ridiculous crunch schedule with seemingly no QA other than what was done for the dub#who got no credit and who even the dub crew didn't acknowledge when she publicly thanked them for doing the editing#which i think says enough about how this show was handled right there)#and even very rocky subs at least like. convey the actual story#but yeah turns out if you gut and rewrite one of the central characters of the show before you even know where the plot is going#because you find him 'despicable'#you end up fucking up the whole thing around it#more than anything it's also really extremely telling about how much 'anti-localization' discussion is overwhelmed with culture war bullshi#because the only mainstream heat this dub got was because it had the word nonbinary in it#meanwhile it's one of the few genuine examples of 'dub crew totally rewrite something to suit their own tastes and brag about it' i've seen#fandom: sk8 the infinity

I suppose this counts as a kinfession. I just wanted to state how sometimes it gets really frustrating to see sentients who are kin with a not binary character that uses they/them (see Kris from Deltarune) and them then using he/him. I get that it is their own memories and literally them, but I suppose after a while it feels like some sort of erasure to me? I hope that makes sense, and if anybody could explain more to make me more comfortable with this specific thing, that would be lovely as well. I always want to keep an open mind.
🏎️‼️
#🏎️ — KINFESSION !#kinfession#kin blog#kin help#fictionkin#This is a fascinating concept that obviously doesn't have a straight answer.#It's purely subjective. But in my opinion. We have to first establish that who you were in source and in your memories is secondary to who#you are now.#So obviously. Your identity your change. The pronouns you go by can change.#And as a third person you are by all means allowed to feel squicked out by seeing that. I can't say I don't get squicked out when certain#cultural aspects of a character are disregarded by the people that are kin with them.#But if we were to police any of that. Then kinning would be immensely complicated and exclusionary in ways that do more harm than good.#We also cannot possibly assume someone's feelings towards their current or past gender identity. What if this hypothetical individual you'r#talking about *does* go by they/them but are still processing that part of their identity? What if they're nonbinary but choose to go by#he/him? We don't know!#We can't possibly know. And to make assumptions about people that are that complicated is too risky for me to be comfortable with.#I get where you're coming from. But I don't think it's something that 1) should ever be brought up to someone that is just trying to live#their life and 2) should ever come before the respect one has towards a person and their identity.#All in all. It's a fascinating subject I'm all for discussing. But not before stating that I consider the feelings of real people to be mor#important than the 'representation' a fictional character stands for.#Both because real people are people and not representation of anything. And because if you DID start going down this mental rabbithole I#think you would just drive yourself bonkers for no good reason.#I know I would.

Writing a character that comes from a technically post-apocalyptic setting is fun bc its like. Ok. So the society that collapsed had pretty traditionally western gender norms, so that carries over as a... ghost of a foundation, or some shit, but nobody's really enforcing them anymore because settlements are spread out over really long distances and communication is minimal. So. There's some vague idea left of "male and female", but no standardized expectation to go with it, and no documentation of what those were supposed to be, and frankly I don't know how that translates into a 14-year-old's perception of self.
And then this applies to like 3 of them.
#having fun in the pit#join me in the pit we have fun here#i think they might all be genderfluid in a communal way but i dont know how to explain All That in 50 words or less#societal gender expectations useful for the monarchy as propaganda uh oh the monarchy collapsed and 2/3rds of our population died what now#200 years later the answer was get sillaaayyyyy#(pre-collapse population) yeah we have boys and girls and sometimes there's trans or nonbinary people but they're kind of hiding bc of laws#(post-collapse) ok so do you want my family gender or my social one or my work one or my religious one or my powerplay one for enemies or-#but i cant just explain all that in my fic because it would break the flow so bad i have shit to do we can have fun in the gender pit later#sending vague messages in my writing that hints to the fact that maybe there's something there while biting my fist shaking and crying
