Things my Rewrite Will Fix About Descendants - Ben's Coronation

If you've seen me post an unfinished version of this, no, you didn't. 💗

As Mal in Descendants 2 said, "I'm back".

Anyway, in the first movie of the Descendants franchise, our beloved deuteragonist, Benjamin aka Ben is crowned as the High King of the United States of Auradon at the mere age of 16. Included in the coronation, and what plays a significant role in the ceremony and the first two movies is Fairy Godmother's wand.

Other than the obvious point that a sixteen year old should not be crowned king (with such a prop looking crown might I add, but that's another post), I would've told you that nothing about the previous statement bothers me.

Except that it does.

Fairy Godmother's wand, a magical artifact from "Cinderella", has no significance to the son of King Adam and Queen Belle, the main characters from "Beauty and The Beast". For the future king of the United States of Auradon, which represents a plethora of many other Disney movies, it also has no significance to an overwhelming majority of the country either, nor does it represent the country in any way. And prior to the Descendants movies and books release, if you would've asked me what was the most powerful magical artifact to be featured in a Disney movie, this wand wouldn't have made the top 5. So why use it?

Simple, it's a plot device. The only real purpose it serves is to be stolen. To be sought after. You could do the entire coronation without the wand and nothing changes. Hell, while everyone's distracted at the Cathedral with the coronation, if the wand wasn't going to be a part of the ceremony, Mal, Jay, Evie, and Carlos could've attempted a second heist at the museum. The wand doesn't have to be in the coronation and that bugs me.

So, for both of my Rewrite ideas, I came up with two solutions to fix this conundrum.

Idea #1

For my first idea, to be featured in "Barriers", I propose that Ben's ceremony consist of more magical artifacts. In an ideal world, I'd pick one artifact from every movie to be featured. There are two problems with that. One, not every Disney movie has a magical artifact that I feel could represent its respective movie (Fairy Godmother's wand from "Cinderella", Genie's lamp from "Aladdin", the Trident from "The Little Mermaid", etc.). Two, even on the off chance that I could come up with an artifact to represent each movie/kingdom, it wouldn't fit well in a setting such as a coronation for the High King of Auradon (such as "Tangled", where the only artifacts I could think of are a frying pan, Rapunzel's tiara, or the Sundrop flower, in which two of these items would better suit a smaller coronation for a future monarch of Corona).

So, I came up with the concept: The Eight Magical Artifacts. While these aren't entirely representative of the entirety of the United States of Auradon, it does a better job than just one lousy wand. Plus, each of the items used could represent traits that the kingdom would want a king to have, and blessing Ben with these could be seen as "bestowing them onto him".

But what are these artifacts? Glad you asked. Here they are:

Fairy Godmother's Wand from "Cinderella", to represent Grace (I wasn't gonna exclude it all together lol)

An Enchanted Rose, similar to the one featured in "Beauty and the Beast", to represent Love

Excalibur from "The Sword and the Stone", to represent Nobility

King Triton's Trident from "The Little Mermaid", to represent Acceptance

Asha's Wand from Wish, to represent Hope

The Sword of Truth and the Shield of Virtue from "Sleeping Beauty"

The Sorcerer's Hat from Fantasia, to represent Wisdom

Basically, I picture the ceremony going as follows. Ben walks down the aisle to the altar. As he stands there, petals of the enchanted rose are being placed around him in a circle. King Triton (who's temporarily human) uses the Trident to alter Ben's suit, adding more gold details that could only shine so bright because of magic. Ben kneels, and is given the Sword of Truth and Shield of Virtue to hold while the Sorcerer's Hat is placed on his head. A prayer or spell of sorts is being chanted for a moment. He is then knighted with the Sword of Excalibur, then again with Asha's Wand. Fairy Godmother's Wand is used to transform the worn crown into a bright, shiny new crown decorated with colorful jewels. Fairy Godmother then knights Ben with her wand finally, removes the hat and places the crown on his head and the coronation is over.

(It's a work in progress, so if you have any ideas/improvements, they're more than welcome)

Also, quite a few of these could make for great weapons come time for my version of the battle between Maleficent and the seven VKs.

Idea #2

For my second, unnamed WIP, the second idea I had to fix Ben's Coronation was pretty simple. In this fic-verse, none of the canon characters exist and the characters and settings are more based on some of the live action movies. The rulers of the United Kingdoms of Auradon are the High King Christopher and his wife, Queen Ella, of Charmont, from the 1997 Rodgers and Hammerstein version of "Cinderella", leaving their daughter (my OC), Elaine to be the future High Queen. Since she's Cinderella's daughter, having her be blessed with Fairy Godmother's wand makes sense.

Playing HSR and thinking about Foxttore made me think about Dottore and/or Reader making creatures similar to cake cats from HSR's "Critter Pick" event because they're so cuuute. I imagine Cattore and Readcat just can't get off each other, like their prototypes. Dottore is also a type of person who's like:

*Doesn't want a cat*

*Reader gets a cat anyway*

*Dottore and cat: ❤️❤️❤️*

It's now in handbook guide that if you work under Dottore, you must keep an eye on creatures, especially on Readcat. If this was an actual event, Cattore and Readcat would have special interactions, like Wisteria Cake and Lambda's Friend. Rare creatures would include:

Crow Cake - Dottore

Sparrow Cake - Reader

Court Jester - Pierro

Armored Cake - Capitano

Angel Strawberry Shortcake - Columbina

Cake from Hearth - Arlecchino

Chicken Patty - Pulchinella

Mora Candy - Pantalone (yknow those candies that look like coins, but are actually chocolate)

(this is verg cringy and took way too long ;;)

Dottore and other fatui have to write the wildest reports about cat cakes, like:

*Crow Cake hisses at people, who try to pet him or Sparrow Cake, only accepting affection from Lord Harbinger or his lover

*Ginger Loaf tried to fight Armored Cake, but the latter one didn't react

*Angel Strawberry Shortcake lets out sounds, that resemble singing. Other creatures are mesmerised

*Bitter Choco has no interest in spending tine with other creatures, prefering sunbathing

*Mora Candy stole a few Mora coins and kept playing with them. It's assumed he likes how they shine in sun

*Crow Cake tried to make a copy of himself and suceeded..??

I also imagine Reader eventually making more cats to represent Dottore's segments, Foul Legacy, Crimson Witch of Embers... They're unstoppable once they start, so the two have many many cats... When Doctor stays in lab at nights, sparrow cake can and will sit on his lap and purr loudly, demanding attention. As for Reader, when their lover pulls an all-nighter in lab, they have a cat version of him to cuddle with :3

YESSS WJBWEJBEW I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS IDEA AND THE CRITTER CAKES AHHH. These names too? Oh my gosh I'm giving you a kith 🥀 anon I'M EATING THIS UP. Dottore is SO a cat lover in denial. He gets all annoyed and huffy because he 'doesn't see why you'd want a creature like that'. He acts like he doesn't care about them but in private... the cat is lying on his lap and he's giving it many head pats and ear scratches.

You were the one who begged Dottore to work on making the cake cat critters with you and he begrudgingly gave in... because you're the one asking. You're the one who named and designed all of them of course! (Dottore was rather impressed with your skill, he noted. If only you put that energy to other experiments...)

I love how we're just adding to the Fatui Handbook 😭 (If Readcat is found by itself, return to a segment immediately. Do not feed sweets to another critter in front of Crow Cake or Cattore, it will not be happy.) Crow Cake has probably also stolen some of the stash to share with Sparrow Cake... it has also stolen your attention from Dottore, much to the Harbinger's dismay. Cake From Hearth can be seen with three smaller cakes following it around sometimes, wonder who they could be? Sparrow Cake and Angel Strawberry Shortcake often spend time together. Crow Cake can be seen watching jealously in the distance. Sparrow Cake likes to stack itself on top of Crow Cake, with its... somehow created copy on top.

Eventually, you got a ton of these circular cats chilling in various corners of the lab... you might even give some away to the Harbingers who are interested! The only problem is that, there is only one Sparrow Cake and numerous similar blue cakes wanting its attention...

I have a lot of feelings about TMAGP 23, and I gotta let them out. As much as I would love to talk about the amazing statement and the other lovely moments between the cast, I am unfortunately very stuck on one specific part, and not in a good way.

Spoilers below cut:

I'm gonna be perfectly honest, this one hurt me way more than I thought, and I'm worried about my enjoyment of the series.

I truly want to enjoy Protocol for what it is. I've been an Alice defender since day 1, I love her moment with Gwen this episode, I love that Lena seems to be showing a bit more care for her employees. But even with all that, I can't keep doing this with the TMA references.

Look, I've never in my entire 32 goddamn years of living felt like a character in media represented me. Ever. And now I have two. Jon and Martin's relationship feels like seeing parts of myself love each other despite their problems. It's a relationship that resembles the one I have with my partner, and I see a lot of him in Martin especially. Listening to TMA was a wonderful experience because, yes, I knew it was a tragedy and I wish they could have a happy ending, but it was the ending they earned, and they got to go together, and the ambiguity was good enough for me.

I want to enjoy the new writers, the new characters, the focus on alchemy and try to piece together what's happening in the story with everyone else because I missed out on that with having binged TMA after the fact. I cannot do that if they keep taking the corpses of characters I love and dangle them in front of me with the vague hope that they might spring back to life.

But they teased that maybe Jon and Martin can be okay in one reality. I've seen people say they haven't, but between the "Hey, this sounds like them in therapy!" bit, and the Gerry and Gertrude scene, I genuinely believe they did to a degree, even if unintentionally.

Maybe we could have something nice, just one little scrap of "they're happy somewhere else" with the TMAGP versions as a nice cameo. I got my hopes up, hopes I didn't ask for, only to be told "Oh, they never knew each other, and they're dead. If they're happy together in any reality, it sure isn't fuck in this one. The characters you relate to more than anything can never be happy, and you're stupid for thinking that they can ☺️."

This hurts. I feel like I've been stabbed. We were told explicitly this could be enjoyed separately, and that Jon and Martin's ending would be left ambiguous. Unless they pull the rug out from under us and say "Oh, Fr3ddi isn't Jon and Martin at all" (which I've been saying since the beginning. I'm of the "stolen voices" camp and I hope that's what it is, or something else.) then I'm now listening to a show where my favorite characters are suffering, again. And even if they do, the versions in TMAGP are presumably dead anyway.

It's like in fanfiction how you always tag stuff like "Bad endings" or "Major character death". You do that because people have grown attached to these characters and don't always want to watch them suffer again (or do, then you filter by it). The new characters I signed up for hearing their pain and torment, I don't know them yet, and I want to see how their stories play out even if it's painful. But I feel like I'm reading an untagged fanfic right now that is cutting into the original story I did want to listen to.

I want this to be its own thing. I want to care about Alice and Gwen and Sam so when they inevitably die I can feel like I did with TMA again, in a sort of reverent peace with things.

And then chasing that with "Oh, also, Basira and Helen-" just felt like extra salt.

I don't want people to take this as being cruel to the writers, or that I'm being entitled. I genuinely didn't want them to have to dive too deep back into TMA, I'm here for the new stuff. And I'm sure I'll get a bit of "this isn't the genre for you, then, horror is-" I know. I've been engaged with horror since I was much too young. It's my favorite genre. I'm fine with character death. I thought TMA handled it very well.

But I can't pretend that this doesn't hurt, either. I'm sure they have more planned, that this could just be a red herring, but that doesn't stop this from hurting right now when I have no idea what comes next.

I had a glimmer of hope that I was perfectly fine with watching from afar, that they made into a beacon too impossibly bright to ignore. Then, when I steer my boat towards it, I'm lured onto the jagged rocks. Just because they throw me a life preserver a few weeks later doesn't remove the water from my lungs.

Idk. I know some people are excited about this, and I hope they get everything they're looking for out of the story, but I worry that at this rate, I might not. At least not until the wound heals some more.

Okay, I'm gonna go back to writing fanfiction where they get to be happy. Pretty sure that's as close as I'm going to get.

Summerhall is an interesting metaphor. There’s a lot of theories about why the dragonst stopped hatching; Targs lost some sort of “mandate of heaven”, Maesters poisoning them, Faceless Men, etc. I don’t think it’s any of that. We’re told why the dragons died - the Dragonpit. But it’s not as simple as “enclosure = bad”. The Dragons spend most of their time enclosed even when wild. They stay in caves and if food is provided for them they don’t seem to leave them - even if they can. We never hear about the castle dragons really flying around outside of their lairs within the mont. Cannibal, Sheepstealer, and Grey Ghost only leave their lairs to hunt. The Pit had caves 5 times the size of those in the mont - the space isn’t restricting their growth. I’m inclined to think that the dragons were let out regularly to fly as well. I feel like that would’ve been a good chore for young Targaryens to oversee. We know they played in the Pit, so they could at least help tend to the dragons as well. But even if this isn’t the case; they don’t seem to go on leisure flights a lot anyway.

I think the answer is what Maester Bennifer says when Rhaena and Jaehaerys are talking about the stolen eggs; The dragons are highly unlikely to hatch away from the heat of Dragonstone. I think that when dragons are eggs they either need to be incubated by their mother or the heat of the volcanoes. This - just like regular incubation - allow them to fully develop to a point where they can hatch. I’m assuming that Laena Velaryon’s botched egg was a dragon version of a premature child. It hadn’t developed past the point of Wyrm and so it did what it did. I also think they’re engineered to only hatch in the presence of other dragons(in the world) or near the blood of the dragon(which probably fulfills the “other dragon) requirement too since they have the whole Zmeu thing going on). Alternatively a high concentration of fire and blood may have the effect of “tricking” an egg to hatch as it would probably ready similar to the presence of a dragon.

So post-dance, none of the dragon eggs are on Dragonstone or hatched there. Hell, the Targaryens don’t even really go there anymore. They’re all attempting to hatch eggs in KL or Driftmark. And the few dragons that are able to hatch are malformed and stunted - probably due to not having adequate heat in their gestation period - only having enough to just manage to survive. Aegon, Rhaena, and Baela wouldn’t have known this because within their family it was probably considered a common sense thing. It would’ve been something they probably learned in passing when they were a little bit older. Something the parents took to be so evident that they never felt the need to explicitly state it. The maesters would’ve known but they would’ve kept it to themselves, as I believe they had decided dragons were too dangerous and better off gone from the world(along with most magic - their narcissism is a discussion for another time). It’s funny and very human that the answer to the problem of no dragons hatching was actually very simple.

Now let’s talk about Summerhall and the Tragedy that occurred there. I can’t recall any Targ staying at Dragonstone post-dance. If we do, I don’t think they’re staying there for a long time. We don’t see anyone really staying there until Elia, her children, and then Rhaella, Viserys, and Dany. The building of Summerhall is like an all out rejection of their heritage. They’ve decided to build an entirely new seat and for what? Furthermore, when they decide to attempt some botched ritual to bring Dragons back, they do it at Summerhall instead of the ancestral seat of Dragonstone. They use the Faith of The Seven - directly in contradiction to the practices and beliefs of Valyria - and they use Wildfire - Dragonflame’s not-as-hot cousin. Summerhall is a pale imitation of Dragonstone - its ghostly counterpart. And I think this is also mirrored in Rhaegar and Daenerys. Rhaegar was born at Summerhall during the Tragedy, and Dany was born on Dragonstone during the greatest storm in living memory after her family had lost the rebellion. The former is a man-made event, the latter is a natural phenomenon. Rhaegar is Emo and he sings among the common folk before returning to his castle; leaves his wife and children to follow some prophecy and steals Lyanna. Dany is a Dreamer. She doesn’t just spend time among the commoners and then return to her highborn life, she was a commoner and a slave. Rhaegar never really had to worry about Aerys or fear his abuses - his status as the heir, and Rhaella protected him. Dany had no one to protect her from Viserys and her status as his heir worsened her prospects of safety in relation to him. Rhaegar is a slave to old prophecies, Dany dreams up new ones and interprets the old ones as she sees fits. Rhaegar is a story of endless potential, Dany is a story of endless actualization. He’s the eldest and she’s the youngest; they’re such an interesting parallel to one another and so is Dragonstone/Summerhall. Rhaegar was kind of like a false prophet. And I love that interpretation of his character because in religion the False Prophet is always presented as malicious, and knowing of the fact they’re in fact a false prophet. I’ve always thought that was ridiculous and boring. To me, it almost made far more sense that a False Prophet would actually believe themselves to be the true savior. And I always felt bad when I imagined their horror at realizing they were actually the opposite. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and tea enveloped Y/N as she sat at her usual table in the corner of Rose Cafe. She peeked up from her book, heartbeat quickening when she spotted him strolling through the door right on schedule - 8am on the dot, like clockwork.

Levi Ackerman. Just the sight of him took Y/N's breath away. His piercing steel gray eyes that contrasted strikingly with his jet black undercut hair. The way he carried himself with an aura of mystery and magnetism.

Y/N yearned to talk to him, to unravel all his intriguing layers. But she could barely muster the courage to meet his gaze, intimidated by his brooding allure.

So instead, she had crafted a fake Instagram account - "tea_lover_89" using it to lurk and fawn over Levi's profile anonymously. Scrolling feverishly though artsy shots of graffiti murals, bookstore shelves, rainy city streets. Pausing on the occasional moody black and white selfie that left her pulse racing.

This morning, as always, Y/N pulled up Levi's page first thing, double-tapping his latest post a hazy nightscape of neon signs reflecting off wet pavement.

"Gorgeous shot," she typed out in the comments from her alter ego account before locking her phone and attempting to refocus on her book. But soon her eyes drifted up, irresistibly drawn back to the real-life version just a few tables away.

Little did Y/N know, Levi's eyes were also stolen glances when he thought she wasn't looking. He too felt inexplicably magnetized by this warm, bubbly girl who frequented his favorite cafe. Her chestnut hair shining in the sunlight, eyes crinkling adorably when she laughed. He was utterly smitten.

Levi never worked up the nerve to talk to Y/N directly either. Instead he created his own fake account - "wanderlust_photog" using it to follow her and fawn in private. Her feed was full of cozy book nook shots, delectable pastries, and radiant selfies that left Levi breathless.

This morning, Levi pulled up her latest selfie - smiling brightly with a dusting of flour on her cheek, captioned "Tried a new snickerdoodle recipe!" He double-tapped, leaving a quick comment: "Looks delicious!"

Then Levi forced himself to pocket his phone, sipping his black coffee while sneaking glances at the real girl behind the enchanting photos, completely enthralled...

It was a bustling morning at Rose Cafe as Y/N waited in line for her usual vanilla latte. Speakers played soothing acoustic music amidst the chatter and aroma of brewing coffee. Y/N scrolled through her phone, giggling at the latest silly meme her best friend sent her.

Suddenly she felt a gentle bump at her shoulder, nearly knocking the phone from her hand.

“Oh excuse me, I’m so sor—“ Y/N’s voice caught in her throat as she looked up into stormy gray eyes. Levi Ackerman stood before her, the very man she had been secretly admiring through a fake Instagram account.

Flustered, Y/N fumbled her phone, watching in horror as it slipped from her grasp toward the tiled floor. But before it could shatter, Levi’s cat-like reflexes kicked in and he caught it smoothly.

“T-thank you,” Y/N stuttered, mortified at her clumsiness.

“No problem.” Levi handed back her phone, but not before his eyes darted down, catching a glimpse of the Instagram app open to none other than tea_lover_89 – the very same account that had been liking and commenting on all his posts for weeks.

Y/N wanted to evaporate on the spot. But suddenly, the hint of a knowing smile formed on Levi’s lips.

“I should have known it was you…” he murmured.

Y/N blinked, confusion evident on her flushed face.

Levi leaned in slightly, voice low so only she could hear. “Did you really think I wouldn’t realize who wanderlust_photog was, constantly liking your posts?”

Y/N’s eyes widened. “Wait…that was YOU?”

Levi nodded, a slight smile breaking through now.

Flustered and elated all at once, Y/N laughed brightly. “Well, I guess neither of us were very subtle then!”

The barista called Y/N’s name, snapping her focus back. Levi insisted on paying for her drink. They sat together with shy smiles, all anonymous pretense gone.

Finally Y/N spoke sincerely. “I’m glad I don’t have to secretly admire you online anymore.”

Levi’s gaze was tender. “Oh but that makes it interesting"

At last they spoke freely together, fake accounts no longer needed when the genuine connection between them was everything they had each secretly dreamed of.

I think that what a lot of comic book writers don't understand about the conflict between Bruce and Jason is what it's primarily about, because while yes the whole killing people thing plays a part it's not nearly as large of a part as people assume it to be. If it was about the act of killing both Damian and Tim would have been facing the same kind of damnation as Jason does. But they don't.

What Jason and Bruce's conflict boils down to is the conflation of the past with the present. Both parties are guilty of this, remembering what was and equating it to what is or what should be. For Bruce (and Dick) it's conflating Jason as Robin with Jason as Red Hood and seeing a child that he let walk down the wrong path. He see's what was (a great morally good hero) with what is (a morally grey Anti-hero) and thinks that Jason should be more like what Robin was which is impossible now due to many different situations and influences that have shaped Jason as an adult and as a hero. Meanwhile for Jason it's conflating the Bruce of the past with the Batman of the present, remembering who Bruce was as a mentor and father and seeking that in a Batman who has already mourned and grieved for a dead son and partner. There's more to that, including the hurt and betrayal of realizing that his death wasn't avenged, but I digress.

They are both so drastically different from when they worked together that they're near strangers. Their antiquated sense of who the other should be has driven a wedge between them that widens through near every interaction as they don't understand who the other person is as a person anymore. They've both been shaped by drastically different influences and circumstances that now there's not much that they can agree upon. That sense of past conflating with present is also why you see Dick fighting a lot more with Jason too, because he knew Jason as Robin.

There's a reason that Jason seems to get along more with people like Steph, Duke, and Cass, people who didn't know him as Robin. It's because they don't have this idealistic childlike version of him to hold onto a pedestal. They never grieved him so they don't hold onto those memories because there were none.

Personally I also think that a lot of the conflict at least on Jason's end comes from a poor sense of identity. He doesn't exactly know who he is or who he wants to be as a hero because he never really got a chance to discover that for himself unlike both Dick and Tim. When we see him start to pull away from Batman and begin that path of self-discovery he's blown up, and when he comes back to life there's people telling him what to do and urging him in certain directions. And while he has some time with the Outcasts I still think he's operating mostly under the influence of the League of Assassins and in the Prince of Gotham arc he's operating under a sense of obligation to Gotham (which I love don't get me wrong).

Furthermore a lot of critical years of brain development were stolen from him where he was either training, comatose, or catatonic. I don't think it's irrational to assume that he's going through those vital years of development just at a later date.

It's why I like the end of Task Force Z so much, we see him going on his own to discover who he is as a person outside of all these other influences and people trying to dictate who he's supposed to be. He's going on that journey of Self-Discovery that is needed so much

I also think that a lot of their problems could have been solved if Bruce had told Jason that the only thing that kept him from killing Joker after he died was diplomatic immunity and Superman. "It would have been too easy" my ass! You wanted too, Bruce, and you were going too.

Just my two cents idk I have a lot of thoughts about this and it kinda pisses me off how there always seems to be a fight between Jason and Batman + Batfamily in every Red Hood run. And it doesn't make sense because they're good and then they're not good and then they're fighting again. I just want some consistency (Please for the love of god don't get me started on how much I wish writers would drop the fucking crowbar thing). I just think that their conflict is a lot more nuanced (on both sides) than Jason does morally reprehensible things sometimes. I could be very wrong about this too, I'm just thinking tm

At the moment I'm writing F1, but I haven't been able to write anything for quite a while, and I never put the lid on any fandom. I've got some outstanding 1D WIPs that are on hiatus.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

LOOK, I want to, and I used to when I had a fic lj, but every couple of years I'd try to on ao3 and then I'd just be drowning in my own horror at writing "thank you so much!!!!" over again and essentially we hit a slump and I haven't in ages. I'm going to pick it up again, though.

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

oh god I hate a sad ending. I hate them!!!! I will only accept an ambiguous ending under certain circumstances, so I don't think I've got any with truly angsty endings. I've got plenty with very angsty middles. That SAID, I occasionally get hassle from people who don't think my fics are happy enough at the end because I don't like to tie all the ends up. I really, really hate pointless epilogues - NOTE, not all epilogues are pointless, and some of them I love - but the ones where it's just an unnecessary flash forward and all the problems are solved and they've got 2.5 children and a beautiful house and everything's perfect and it just feels like a horror story to me, like a fannish/romance novel version of the stepford wives. If it's an epilogue where the characters have had a bit of a chance to breathe after the main events, and they're happy, GREAT. If it's a cookie cutter ending then I'm out, so I guess maybe the end of Emperor's New Clothes where they're trying living together and trying to be financial partners in their relationship, and Not Your Fault But Mine, where Louis and Nick are together but it isn't obvious which route Louis is going to take back to university/he's still struggling with his mental health was still too angsty for some people. To me, both those fics end with them together and planning for a future so they feel happy to me.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think all of mine are happy but maybe We Used To Wait is the most deserved happy ending, because it's the one where Louis was in an accident and a secret relationship with Nick, and he's in intensive care and his injuries are really bad, and the ending is him getting to perform again, and being out and being with Nick.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

y e p. Sometimes it makes me laugh because this fic very clearly wasn't For You, just press the back button, and sometimes it's more frustrating. Sometimes it's gross.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Oh yeah baby. My current fic is delightfully feral (to me) and I love writing smut. And then other times, I'm like... yes we won't be writing THAT right now thank you, no sex please we're British. Usually I have one week per month when I vastly prefer everyone keep their clothes on. Love a weird hormonal flux.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I have in the past, but in general now I can't be bothered. I definitely wrote a Sharpe/Doctor Who one back in the day.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yeah, a few times. The most egregious (and recent) was someone stealing We Used To Wait (which was Louis/Nick) and changing the names to Aaron and Robert, and amending various little bits to suit Emmerdale canon. If you're going to steal a fic, it's best to do it in a fandom I'm not in/I don't fucking read in, for the love of fuck.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, I love having a blanket transformation policy on AO3. I'm always so in awe of people wanting to engage with your writing like that.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! A couple of short ones and then the delicious Sugar, We're Going Down which I co-wrote with my very dear Anonymous friend, and we didn't ever think we were going to share it when we wrote it (hence why my friend is anonymous on it!) so we just went balls to the wall feral with it.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

I don't have an answer to this, but if I ever considered something my OTP I will go to my grave loving it. I love Louis/Nick so much, and each OTP before that. Right now I'm extremely focused on Max/Daniel and I don't see that going anywhere soon.

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Nope, I have the I Had Rather sequel and Harry Styles Cooks outstanding but hopefully they'll both get an ending when the time's right, even if it's just me reading them.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue? Angst? IDK??!! Help!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Oh, action and description for sure. I'm not a very visual writer/reader, I very rarely have a picture of a character in my head or the space that they inhabit. I know everything they say, though.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I'd be worried about fucking it up. If I knew someone who was a native speaker and it worked, then I guess.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Young Americans technically, then probably Percy/Oliver in Harry Potter and Dom/Billy for the Lord of the Rings films.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

I Had Rather Hear My Dog Bark At A Crow - I loved writing this, it came together in a few weeks, it made me fall in love with the pairing, legit changed my life for various reasons and I just enjoy it a lot.

DC Showcase: Blue Beetle

A 60s-styled short using the Charlton incarnations of Vic and Ted, plus Captain Atom and Nightshade.

I'm on board with Vic being an objectivist for the sake of a janky throwback. There is no Rorschach energy here, this is entirely a parody of Ditko.

The comedy's not super inspired but hey, it's 15 minutes, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Look at these losers go.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Mystery in Space!

Vic is so shaped. Just a little guy.

Most of these teasers are meant to show off who the guest hero is and what they do, but not Vic. He's just chilling. Zero explanation of what his deal is other than "guy who is Around."

BatB - The Knights of Tomorrow!

Of all the heroes who have been on BatB, Vic is probably the least qualified to go to Apokolips. Why did he agree to this.

Unsurprisingly he falls in lava. Sad. Well there are other heroes.

BatB - Darkseid Descending!

And then he singlehandedly saves the world from Darkseid while most of the Justice League International blows up. King.

I love BatB's commitment to weird little dudes. It plays fast and loose with characterization (it's a kids show that's mostly about Batman and does it with everyone, I'm not gonna nitpick it) but it's got a lot of interesting randos.

I think this is the only time Jaime and Vic appear together? Actually appear, not just as nonspeaking cameos in a big event.

Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold

I watched this while babysitting and I had a great time. It's a kids movie, but hey, I have Scooby-Doo nostalgia and a soft spot for campy Batman, this does both very well.

Vic shows up, is annoying on purpose, and gets his shit rocked and his identity stolen. Extremely Vic behaviour.

Justice League Unlimited - Fearful Symmetry

I know this is a beloved portrayal. Jeffery Combs' performance is well regarded for a reason. It's the biggest adaptation Vic's ever had. It acknowledges his comic connections to other characters. I get it. I just do not enjoy him as the baseless conspiracy theorist and it drives me up the wall that it's the best he's got.

Like I'm sorry but he would not fucking say any of this. He's annoying and bad at superheroics for many other reasons but he is extremely aware of the real roots of corruption, he's not going to be repeating antisemitic conspiracy shit. Even when he genuinely sucks he sucks in very specific ways.

JLU - Double Date

Points for being partly based on Cry for Blood.

It makes me so sad that I don't like this take on Vic and Helena's relationship. I wish I did.

JLU - Question Authority

I do actually like Vic getting deeply upset by the thought that the bad future is predestined and trying to throw himself under the bus for it. That feels fitting to me even if the details aren't.

There's a version of this story that lives in my brain where Vic is more of his stubborn, no-nuance early reporter self, and he breaks into the secret government facility to try and leak everything to the world only to get his ass kicked instantly by Captain Atom.

JLU - Grudge Match

This is the world's dumbest nitpick but Vic fucks. It's the one part of being in a relationship he doesn't suck at. I have no real problems with this sequence, it's funny and does the conspiracy bit better than his main appearances, but I discovered while rewatching that this is a thing I have opinions about and where else am I going to put these extremely stupid thoughts.

JLU - Destroyer

It's just rude that Vic is in the suitup montage but has his mask on the whole time. Let him transform.

I liked his JLU episodes a hell of a lot less this time through than when I first watched them. It's generally a good show, but knowing that this version of Vic is the most accessible one is incredibly frustrating, and the overall strength means that I'm annoyed about missed potential. BatB was never going to be the serious showcase of his nuance or whatever, but JLU could have been an incredible adaptation, and it just isn't for him. Sorry JLU fans.

ok, let me introduce them>>>

this is an adult Neji who survived the war, hope it is obvious bc of his scars. Along with Hinata Neji is the main POV in my HC.

Kō Hyūga with my redesign. I got so used to this appearance on him, so I have to remind myself that he doesn't look this way in the canon and other people may not recognise him.

He is 2,5 years older than Neji. In my HC his B-day is on 31 December because this day is Bertolt’s (AoT) b-day and my HC Kō has many things in common with Bertolt. His temper is soft  and is much like Hinata's, only that he is rather strong and is confident in his skills. His problem is the unhealthy desire to meet other people's expectations, the fear of accepting himself as he is.

He was the younger son in one of the main house’s families, but his elder brother was killed during Orochimaru invasion, his eyes torn out and stolen. It happened 2 weeks before Kō’s 17th birthday, so he didn’t get the seal. But it makess him miserable, he would happily bear a hundred seals if only it could turn his brother back to life. He has always been on good terms with Hinata, he looked after her and was supposed to be her guard. After the events of OG Kō gradually makes friends with Neji and eventually becomes one of the closest ppl for both Neji and Hinata. Kō is one of 4 POVs in my HC.

Kō is a sweet cinnamon bun and just perfect, I want to marry him but he is 2D and gay :(

Hiashi Hyūga. My fav part of this art.

Hiashi is DILF.Don't judge me.

I hc him being rather young, so that he is around 31-32 yo during Chunin Exam Arc I gave him background story and better developed personality in my hc so he turned out to be a very interesting and contradicting character.

Hiashi is one of POVs in my HC, through his character the clan’s story, traditions, political relations with the village, with Uchiha clan and inside the clan are told.

Tokuma Hyūga a.k.a Neji's main rival for the title of the most handsome Hyūga man. In my HC Tokuma looked after Neji when his father died and his mother was away on missions so he is kinda brother for Neji even tho they are not that close related. Tokuma has a rather difficult and heavy character, Neji picked some of his traits up. He is not too tall, around 175cm, and looks really young being one of the eldest among Neji, Kō and the next character. 

This one is my OC. His name is Yojiru.

At first I wanted him to be more like RtN Neji, but gradually he switched to Dandelion from the Witcher saga. He is Neji's first cousin, their mothers were sisters, so they look alike. He is almost 10 years older than Neji. He is a poor fighter and  medic-nin, but is rather well-read and knows a lot of things. He is also a talented musician, he plays some musical instruments, sings and even writes songs. He likes to tell jokes and fool around, he has a playful and carefree nature.

In the time skip period between OG and Shippuden he gets acquainted with Ko, they quickly become friends. Yojiru teaches Kō to live for himself and not to look back on other ppl opinion. Later they become lovers.

Hoheto Hyūga. He was a background character in the canon and for now he is only a background character in my HC. He is the oldest man on this art, he is around 5-7 years older than Hiashi I think he is a real clan's patriot judging from the scene with him on the war. Probably he is Hiashi’s guard and assistant.

This one is a rather new OC that is based on one of background Hyūgas from the anime. I HC that he is Natsu's older twin brother. They are from the main house so he doesn't have a seal, and Natsu being the younger twin has it. At the moment I don’t have any ideas about his personality, I'm choosing a name for him from Aki and Haru.

It’s been a few years since he last saw you, he has a vivid memory of sitting on the edge of the bed you had just settled into and saying “Cleo, this isn’t working.”

He’d been on his way out of the door, and you were on your way in. It was the nature of your relationship, snatches of time stolen in between the hours the both of you worked.

When he lays eyes on you today, you’re just as pretty as he remembers. Your hair is a little different, but it suits you, you wear a little less makeup, playing up your natural features instead. You’re wearing a cobalt blue blazer over a black t-shirt and grey jeans. It’s a pop of colour he isn’t expecting on you because when you were with him you always used to wear black with red lips and winged eyeliner. This new version of you…

It looks good, really good.

It’s just his luck that you’re producing the episode that he’s being interviewed for. The two of you are amicable, he doesn’t have a problem with you or what you do. You’re an excellent producer and the documentaries you’ve been developing have been phenomenal. The one on the Ricardo case had blown him away, it had resulted in the conviction of the two men who had beaten the hitchhiker to death for fun.

The problem is Seth, the interviewer the network has selected to undertake the questioning. Matt is a no-nonsense kind of guy; he doesn’t suffer fools gladly so when Seth goes off script and tries to rile him, he shuts it down almost immediately. You call time on the whole thing, send the team to interview Simone instead because it becomes apparent that Matt isn’t going to play ball. To be fair you don’t blame him. You’d warned the network that Seth wasn’t a good fit for a case like this.

It’s in the aftermath of the interview when he’s trying to detangle himself from the microphone wire that you intervene. You can tell he’s frustrated from the way he’s tugging at his lapel.

“Matt…” It’s the way you say his name that stops him in his tracks because you both know he’s going to break the thing. “Let me help.”

He sighs, throwing his hands up in surrender and you smile because yea, sometimes he’s a little over dramatic with his gestures.

“You know, I saw you roll your eyes.” He tells you as your fingertips chase up the hem of his lapel. “You think he’s just as ridiculous as I do.”

“Oh, I do.” You agree, leaning in close. The scent of your perfume floods his senses. There’s a smoky undertone to it, something a little woody. It reminds him of autumn, the crinkle of crisp leaves and the sun peeking through the changing leaves. “This is one of the cases the network chose, mine are usually a lot less gimmicky.”

“I know.” He says, tilting his head up to meet your gaze. You could lose yourself in those dark eyes of his, you had once upon a time. “I’ve kept track of you a little, you won an award last year. I wanted to send flowers but the way we left things…”

He trails off. He wasn’t proud of his actions; he wasn’t an easy man to be with. His three ex-wives would testify to that. He was too focused on the job, he cancelled dates, forgot birthdays but so did you and that’s why it worked…

Until it didn’t.

“You weren’t the only one consumed by their career.” You remind him, your fingers rearranging his lapel before you set the microphone box down on his desk.

Two people who barely spent any time together doesn’t constitute a relationship. Matt had cared for you, but you were on two different paths. You were spending late nights in production, tiptoeing in during the early hours of the morning and he was disappearing for days on end solving the cases.

He’d been lying in an empty bed, sleeping another night alone when he’d realised, he couldn’t remember the last time the two of you had shared a meal together. It’s only afterwards when he tries to schedule something that he realises what the problem is, you’re both simply too busy.

“I’ve changed.” He finds himself telling you. “I had a heart attack earlier this year, I had to slow down and surprisingly, I don’t hate it.”

“I know the feeling.” You say, your voice turning a little rough. “I had a scare of my own and something like that, it really changes your perspective.”

You get it, he can tell. Whatever happened to you it shook up your world, the same way the heart attack had shaken up his.

“Hey,” He says softly, his palm covering yours as he clasps it to his chest. “You wanna get out of here, we can grab dinner and talk a little more?”

“Yea Matt.” You say, feeling the thundering of his heart underneathe the tips of your fingers. “I think I’d like that.”

Voyager rewatch s4 ep23: Living Witness

This one is kind of weird actually. Like I get that they were trying to experiment with a different format, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the end.

It opens with a dark alternate version of Voyager, with Captain Janeway as a black glove wearing villain, and the crew are all violent thugs. Back in the day when this first aired, trying to figure out what was really going on gave it some suspense on the first viewing, but once you know the twist, it's just kind of boring. We eventually learn it's a simulation in a museum on an alien planet 700 years in the future, and they're recounting their version of Voyager's role in their historical war.

Eventually the museum guide finds a way to activate the Doctor's back-up program that had been stolen in an attack on Voyager, and he asks the Doctor for more details about what happened, since he was there. The Doctor is horrified when the museum guide shows him the simulation, and tells him he got everything wrong, which the guy doesn't want to believe. Eventually though, the museum guy comes around and allows the Doctor to create a simulation of what actually happened. He's horrified to learn that his own people started the war, not Voyager, and it causes chaos on his planet as the two races there start riots and ransack the museum. The Doctor wants to deactivate himself because his presence and his knowledge of the truth is wreaking havoc on this society, but the curator convinces him not to, because finding and facing the truth is the only way the two races on his planet can reconcile.

It ends with another simulation within a simulation, as everything we've just seen is revealed to be another historical simulation in the same museum even farther in the future, where a new curator tells a group about the Doctor and the former curator's work, which finally led to harmony in their society. She notes that the Doctor eventually took off in a ship to find his way back to Earth, and that's the end. And I'm left scratching my head to figure out how this possibly works in continuity.

The Doctor absolutely was on Voyager for the rest of the series, so how in heck he could also be on this planet, I have no idea! Is this an alternate universe with no connection to the main canon?? Or are they meaning to say that there are actually two separate versions of the Doctor on Voyager, who somehow magically have the exact same memories and experiences, even though the version in the back up module was never activated before?? Idk, but either possibility is weird! It's just a little too out there for me to go with, and morever, it's not very interesting.

The only actual member of the Voyager crew we get to see in this episode is the Doctor. While I thought he had a great moment of grief and loss when he realized the rest of the crew was dead now, it was undercut by having him go right back to taking cheap potshots at them a scene or two later, which kind of makes you question how much he actually even cares about any of them. I really hate how the Voyager writers seem to think it's cute to have him constantly put down people who are supposed to be his friends to make himself feel smarter or better or more important. This is no where near the worst example, but every single time they do it adds up, and leaves a bad taste in my mouth that makes it really hard for me to like the Doctor.

We don't get to see any of the rest of actual Voyager crew even once in the whole episode- it's all simulations, and mostly of the evil versions which are nothing like them. I'm sure it must have been fun for the cast to play evil versions of their characters, but it was dull to watch because we as the audience know it isn't real, so ultimately, who cares? The alien society's problems didn't really move me either because we don't know enough about their culture or their history to understand the situation. Everything about them is painted in pretty broad strokes, including their ultimate reconciliation, which happens off screen. I get what it was going for, the message was obviously supposed to be that reconciliation can only come when a society faces it's past head on, which is great, but I just don't feel like this episode told that story in a meaningful or compelling way.

Tl;dr: A boring episode that largely glosses over the nuances in the point it's trying to make, and leaves you wondering how it even fits into Voyager canon.

crack au but the more i wrote the more i took it seriously: After almost-dying-but-not-dying as a baby, the reason maggie doesn't get found is bc a prodigy nearby accidentally uses their power on her. And turns her, into an actual magpie. The specifics of the power effectively cursing other ppl to turn into any kind of animal when they feel xyz emotion. Prodigy never realizes and leaves b4 fixing anything

Kids from the prodigy children's home take the injured baby birdo in to be sort of like a class pet, nursing her back to health. At some point she's shooed out of there for taking up resources, its a children's home not an animal shelter! Maybe if they hadn't, she'd have eventually shifted back into a human and things would have played out differently. But oh well, she flies away and quickly finds herself at home at Renegades HQ, becoming an absolute MENACE

Where the renegades are she'll sometimes trail along and snag the shiny and valuable trinkets she spots. Seemingly NO ONE can befriend her, she can get very snappy and really REALLY LOUD when she's upset. She still has the mind of a human, but when u've been a birb most of the time ur whole life, you're gonna act like a birb. Oh what a menace

She acts the friendliest with Callum, meaning some days she's nice and some days she'll cause problems. But at least usually she won't knock things over if Callum is there.

Adrian comes second in terms of friendliness, him and Callum being the only ones that know how to get da birb under control. Sometimes he'll draw up distractions to get her attention, like shiny things that have no actual value since he made them. It gets her attention for long enough for anyone to get back their valuables, but not long enough to actually trick her into thinking what he made was real.

Maggie is as smart as a hooman but she also has birb temptations and the silliness compels me to believe that she can both be smart and briefly fooled as a birb

I think Callum would be the first to figure out that Maggie's actually just a human that got turned into a birb, but wouldn't have much evidence to prove it before his death. Adrian would have his suspicions but he wouldn't be able to do jack shit about it by the time the events of the trilogy come to stress him out.

Nova contemplates shooting the fucking birb oh so many times, but she's much less inclined to those ideas when she hears the theories that actually Maggie is a human turned bird. Then its more a matter of will someone tame this thing already, why hasn't she been turned back yet?!

When Maggie gets a hold of Nova's bracelet in the supernova version of this au, Nova would have to do a bunch of chasing her around to find the nest she's keeping her bracelet in (there are numerous nests too its frustrating). Maggie is REALLY NOT HAPPY when Nova sticks her hand into her stash, especially when Nova grabs the bullet too.

Maggie retains her Asset Perception and Telekinesis but really doesn't use them very often as a birb. Much more the FEW occasions as a human pre reveal, its easier to use telekinesis than practice grabbing stuff as a human after all. It isn't impossible for her to use her powers as a birb, but she'd have to be very stressed to do so, such as when her most prized possession is stolen from one of her safe spots. And as a baby birb, after being nursed back to health, she found were the bullet had been put miraculously and stole it back, hiding it in a secret nest until she'd have to move.

She'd probably figure out her backstory via ppl repeating how they found her to other ppl. Some details would probably be lost like the status of her family but doesn't mean its impossible for her to piece together later.

And since i can't NOT talk about trinket duo, Max is the only one Maggie is pretty much ALWAYS friendly with. She's hesitant to trust at first, but warms up quickly much to the shock of EVERYONE. Once they become besties, everyone goes to max when she's being a nuisance. At least prior to the reveal

The reveal that Maggie is actually a human AND she's Evie Artino would back to back bombshells for everyone involved god could you IMAGINE it would be insanity, especially for Nova. Like, what do you mean my baby sister became A BIRD is she dreaming wtf is this

As stated earlier, the curse would allow her to shift back given some requirements, probably that she feels safe and isn't in any survival mode. Being a human vs being a birb have different advantages after all. Callum would get close to seeing her shift, but only ever actually see either Human Maggie or Birb Maggie, never the in between. And like i said, the stressful stuff going on in the second and third book would make it hard to get this addressed anyway

Potentially the first time someone, aside from Callum, sees her as a human would be in the final battle and she gets shot with Agent N and goes down. She'd be assumed dead until Nova would realize post battle that there.. there is a kid here. A kid sobbing by the corpse of Callum, sobbing like its the first time you're crying and you can't control it. The case that carried the serum either on the ground nearby or still lodged in the kid's arm, i can't remember if they did the same amount of damage as a bullet atm so lets just say theres a wound but probably not serious enough to be fatal

Nova wouldn't have enough time to realize its THE FUCKING BIRD but the kid's appearance makes her heart hurt. Maggie wouldn't be able to make many coherent words, if any at all, but she'd glare daggers. Nova might try to calm her but ultimately puts her to sleep, an issue for later

Later comes around, Max's power would probably change her back, this time round just giving it to her as a legit power instead of a curse. Nova, after healing and processing more important parts of the last few days, would be very confused about where she went. No one knows anything about a girl like she described.

Maggie can't help remaining as a bird post Callum's death, even tho she technically has the ability to change back. The grief would be too much, and i think she would act like a traumatized bird would in this scenario. Feather picking, is much quieter, decreased appetite, etc.

I think Max friendship would lessen those issues both since she'd be human around him more often, wouldn't feel birb urges and feels safe, AND also bc Max would tattle. He doesn't want to see her accidentally hurt herself with going to ham with feather picking after all, he researched that it could happen.

Maggie would be given bracelets to remain human for periods of time so she can get better control of her abilities, keep herself safe, and get used to being a human. She's not happy about that at all but her complaints will only be heard if she learns to talk like a human, not a super difficult transition given Magpie's can mimic noises, but its still a challenge.

First words: "fuck you" Not to Max, she knows why he told even if she wasn't happy about it. No, those words are for Adrian, who is the person Max told first. It makes so much sense to Adrian he doesn't even ask any more questions before believing Max, to his brother's shock. Later when Maggie won't act like a stressed birb while as birb, most of the training is with Danna due to power similarities

As a human Maggie can walk, kind of, she's shifted to being a human before, but she'd much rather fly. Much too clumsy as a human. As a human she almost never goes anywhere without Max, both feeling protective of Max and also needing the support. But that isn't too different from how she acts as a birdo since she'd absolutely hop around while following Max. Its just she doesn't want to go anywhere without max as a human.

The Evie reveal would probably come a little later after the Being Human Confirmed revelation, and thus ensues both sisters having complicated feelings about it. Probably wouldn't be all too different from my other ramblings about how it could go down, but Maggie's grievances more in line with "you tried to bat me away with a broom one time" They'd make up eventually, not like theres much in the way of them reconnecting in this au after all. Nova never imagined that she'd see a bunch of Evie's firsts when she barely turned 13 but here they are.
