All the political discourse rn and I have seen NOBODY talking about The Third Wave???? Do you know what that is???? No???? Well Imma tell you! in 1967 high school teacher Ron Jones conducted an experiment during a lecture on the holocaust when they couldn't understand how the German people could allow the Nazi's to do such things to the jewish people. Jones started a movement called "The Third Wave" and told his students that the movement aimed to eliminate democracy. Jones postulated that democracy’s focus on individuality was against mankind’s “authoritarian” nature, which he aimed to emphasize with the movement’s motto: "Strength through discipline, strength through involvement." and only made simple changes on the first day like asking his students to sit properly, to raise their hands before speaking, and to address him as Mr. Jones. The experiment was meant to be only one day, but the students took to it. On day two a salute was made and the movement was called the third wave. It began to grow as his students not only took to his tactics, but other students wanted to join in. The line "Strength through community" was added in. And then on the third day as the movement grew again, the motto "Strength through action" was added. Students were given member cards, taught how to initiate new members, and were instructed to report anyone who did not abide by the rules. By the fourth day the experiment was blowing out of Jones' control so he told the students that it was a nationwide movement, and that he next day a presidential candidate of the Third Wave would announce its existence to the public. Students were asked to attend a rally at noon the next day, and three students who dissented were banished to the library while the rally was held- where jones had other friends pretend to be speakers before revealing the "president" of the movement: Adolf Hitler.
It emphasized being careful about who you follow. The experiment was made into a tv movie in 1981 called The Wave (which I highly recommend watching btw), and shows how easily people can fall into fascism. Please watch it or read the novel of the same name by Todd Strasser, or Check out the wikipedia page. Get yourself educated and use what you learn to protect your loved ones please.

The Third Wave - Three Kingfishers-Ferris Wheel (197?)
The Third Wave were vocal group consisting of five Filipino American sisters from Stockton, CA, who recorded a LP with George Duke. The track Waves Lament is absolutely sublime. I'm not entirely sure when this song was recorded, though it showed up on a Sunshine pop collection. This track is a wonderful cover of two Donovan songs from his LP Sunshine Superman, with lovely vocal harmonies that only siblings can create.

the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. now is the time of monsters
I'm beginning to think that some massive changes have taken place not just to the world around us, but to us. How we think about people around us, how we speak, how we love, how we form thoughts, where those thoughts come from.
As much as I disagree with (at least, the surface interpretation of) Julian Jaynes' ideas about the "bicameral mind" I have to say that what I presently suspect is happening to the human mind, emotions, and cognition in the 21st century, is producing a very very different kind of character than the 20th Century Person. Possibly on the level which he believed to be the case with the shift away from his proposed Bicameral Mind.
In a way, we have a new Bicameral Mind: our native thoughts, and the distributed crowd-sourced digital brain that we have spent most of our time in interaction with since the 2010s.
Our world changed drastically and we are changing with it.
This is just my uninformed 2c, my feelings, I'm not like. A Credentialed Expert (tm) of any kind I think that in many cases, there is a lot of artistic and intellectual work of prior to the 21st century that will be illegible to a lot of 21st Century People because the cultural context will be so drastically different and they will have no way to reach across that gap.
I genuinely believe many social concepts we grew up taking for granted - the idea of a separate self proven against the outside world, away from one's parents (in the West, this may actually be a relic of a period of time encompassing the Age of Sail and Industrial Revolution); in a community very different from oneself...
Even more, I begin to think that how *romantic love* was constructed in the 20th century, is very different now to the degree that moderns simply cannot relate to older portrayals of romance.
20th Century People can relate to the minds and feelings of 19th Century People better than 21st Century People can relate to a large cohort of 20th Century People.
It is easier for a Gen Xr to insert themselves into the mindset of a dead person living during the Great Depression than it is for a lot of Zoomers and Alphas to relate to a Gen Xr's teen years.

In 2003 Ethan starred as teacher Kurt Korn in the brand new musical "Finix".
The musical was based on "The Third Wave"; The famous experiment put on by teacher Ron Jones to explain to his students how the world could accept the actions of the Nazi regime.
With Ethan's birthday coming up next month we thought it would be nice to look back on all the incredible roles he has performed over the years.

In no way surprised that the first person to call the Third Wave social experiment guy and be like "hey what the fuck" was a local rabbi.

In order to not commit the widespread sin of pissing on the poor, I am actually reading the 'Third Wave' feminist literature that has shaped mainstream feminist discourses both in the modern academy and the general zeitgeist.
And let me tell you, calling the 'Third Wave' less white, middle-class, elitist, or "Ivory Tower" than its predecessor is a pretty funny punchline to the joke that is feminist historiography.
The sheer postfeminist, post-strucuralist, navel-gazing, choicefem, "the struggle for equality is largely over and we are past the need for an organized movement" sentiments overflowing from the influential works here is making me want to peel my skin off. 'Third Wave' feminism was not spared "End of History" disease. No, it did not adequately address or integrate the concerns of women of color or working-class women. No, it did not incorporate intersectionality until the 2010s, when Crenshaw's work was popularized not by academic feminists but by the liberal feminist blogosphere. And no, it did not meaningfully engage with trans or queer oppression or care to really repudiate second-wave transmisogyny--a quick look at bell hooks' Is Paris Burning?, where she quotes Marilyn Frye and refuses to call the film's subjects trans, should tell you all you need to know there.
The era of feminism that gave us the girlboss was not a particularly inclusive wave, funnily enough.
