So— back to the speculative evolution request list!

@thebigdeepcheatsy requested a "cactus-dwelling/germinating evolution of introduced rosy-faced lovebirds":

While Agapornis cheatsyi is still quite physically similar to its introduced ancestors, this lovebird has developed a close symbiotic relationship with the cactus Carnegiea ornipolis, a descendant of the modern saguaro.

Naturally fasciated, this cactus grows a splaying fan-like crown which the lovebirds excavate their shallow nest burrows into. Feeding on the cactus' fruit in early summer, the lovebirds then disperse the seeds via their droppings – a process that significantly improves propagation chances, both due to the birds commonly foraging and defecating around suitable nurse plants and the passage through their gut speeding up germination.

Elbeitandraka venenifer is a descendant of tree-climbing Malagasy tenrecs that developed gliding membranes – and its lineage is now just about achieving true powered flight.

About 25cm long (~10"), its proportionally short broad wings require it to fly very fast to generate enough lift for its weight. It mostly only actively flies when traveling between roosts and feeding sites (or when escaping from threats), alternating between gliding to save energy and flapping to recover altitude.

It's an opportunistic omnivore, crawling around in the tree canopy foraging for vegetation, fruits, fungi, invertebrates, and the occasional smaller vertebrate, using its flexible sengi-like nose to probe around in crevices.

Much like modern common tenrecs it's capable of hibernating for months at a time through periods of scarce food availability. It also accumulates alkaloid toxins in its body from its arthropod prey, advertising its unpalatability to predators with bold contrasting warning coloration on its wing membranes.

Inversodraco rapax is a highly specialized Jurassic descendant of heterodontosaurids that took to climbing and gliding, developing delta-wing-like membranes on their hindlimbs convergently similar to those of the earlier sharovipterygids.

Around 75cm long (~2'6"), it has unusually flexible hip joints for a dinosaur, able to splay its legs out to the sides to deploy wings supported by an elongated outer toe on each foot. Its arms form small forewings for stability, and its long tail ends in a vane of stiffened feathers that aid in steering.

Unlike its herbivorous-to-omnivorous ancestors it's primarily a carnivore, swooping down onto small prey and grabbing it with its talon-like forelimbs.

Pokémon Headcanons: Ignoring that all Pokémon lay eggs, the reason why Gibles are rare is because they commit intrauterine cannibalism wherein fetal gibiles devour each other until there is only one or two remaining that are born

Also the Nido line are all therapsids ala gorgonopsids and cynodonts.

I generally headcanon that many Pokemon can both lay eggs and reproduce in more traditional ways (based off some Pokedex entries), so that tracks.

Pokémon Speculation

I'm sure that someone else thought of this, but I really don't want to spend the time running through various Reddit threads and youtube videos unless I have to.

So, the Unova/Isshu region has a lot of Pokémon species based off animals from the African savannah, South American rainforests, and Indonesian jungles. These are areas in our world where the corresponding animals are critically endangered. Some examples:

Minccino = Chinchillas, which are hunted for their fur and kept as pets. Some species are still critically endangered.

Darmanitan = Orangutans (duh), who have lost much of their natural habitat and now only live in Borneo and Sumatra. They are also critically endangered.

Zebstrika = the Grevy's Zebra, which is (you guessed it) endangered. There was once a Zebra variety called Quaggas that humans drove to extinction. We've attempted to bring it back with breeding to mixed results.

I could go on, but there's more...

Unova is also based on New York City and is one of the more developed Pokémon regions in terms of urbanization. It also is a Pokémon region where the local species are largely protected from outside, "invasive" species (to the point that the developers clearly scrapped having a Tauros and Luvdisc evolution and thought we wouldn't notice).

Really?

My speculation is that at some point in Unova's ancient past, it had a thriving savannah and jungle ecosystem and that the indigenous people there lived in relative harmony with the land. Sigilyph, Golerk, and Yamask echo the art and folklore of different ancient tribes from the Middle East to support this theory.

Golurk and Sigilyph both have Pokedex entries about protecting ancient civilizations, while Yamask wanders the ruins of ancient cities. Yamask is even said to be a dead human reincarnated into a Pokemon, possibly from these tribes(!)

Around 2500 years ago, the back story of the two brothers and the great dragon occurred, and ultimately, Unova was left open to urbanization after the split. Foreign humans started settling the land with more dangerous technology than the native Unovans (both human and Pokémon) could keep up with, and their urban sprawl destroyed many of the lush habitats there. As more and more people came to the area, they also brought in Pokémon that were not native to Unova, which had already adapted to blend in with human technology and likely assist their trainers in their destruction. Many Pokémon species were either driven to extinction or bred with compatible species to produce new variations, at the cost of never being able to gain their original forms back. Ancient Unova and its ecosystem was destroyed.

You can't tell me that these Pokémon are naturally adapted to a savannah or jungle environment. They were either invasive species or they rapidly adapted through crossbreeding to survive in the new urban sprawl.

This speculative history would reflect that of both the United States' and Japanese colonization. It would also explain why, in modern times, there is so much concern for Pokémon - particularly the native Unovan ones - and their wellbeing. These Pokémon are all that's left of a once diverse and wild ecosystem, and the people pf Unova overwhelmingly want to keep them from harm. This makes them susceptible to extremists who weaponize their righteous passion; enter Team Plasma.

I contemplate the happy faces of people around me here in Ireland and reminisce about the happy normal life my family and I had before the war. A life that turned into a distant memory for us and was replaced by an unending series of horrible nightmares.

Unlike my family in Gaza, people here have access to drinking water, all types of food, electricity, and a roof over their heads. Above all, they are safe, and I cannot help but wonder if they genuinely do appreciate these blessings in their lives enough.

People seem relaxed and laughing wholeheartedly around me in Ireland. I wish I could laugh too, but I am crushed way beyond recovery on the inside. I was evacuated by my Irish college after five months of living the horrors of war in Gaza. I hope you will never know what it feels like to live in constant fear and worry and be horrified by the most sickening and scary nightmares every single night while you are far away from your family in such circumstances.

When did my people in Gaza cease to be human beings worthy and deserving of a normal life? Has it become normal now for my family in Gaza to be starved and killed while the whole world is watching the genocide? If that is the case, then you will have to excuse me if I seek every avenue to bring them to Ireland and start a new normal life like all people here around me.

I was assured by the Irish Reugee Council (IRC) and lawyers in Ireland that there is hope I can reunite with my family in Ireland. In difficult times, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. For me and my family, you are literally our light and hope for a better life.

So I just lost my job cuz I found out that the location I work at is being closed in a bunch of places including mine at just the start of this month. No I can not be moved to anyplace nearby me. I'm unable to drive. So I lost my job.

The place where I was working had us transfer or throw out all the merchandise that wasn't sold this month. It always irked me to have to throw things away which are perfectly usable say for one flaw or hadn't actually expired yet, but this last time threw me for a real loop.

Instead of packaging them up to another location, corporate had us throw unopened boxes of gloves, hats, jewelry and scarves directly in the locking dumpster.

No, we could not take anything or we'd be written up or wouldn't have gotten any final pay/severance. It wasn't super fancy but all the stuff costed over 7$ at least and was not ever worn, used or even taken out of their packaging and has to go directly to a landfill.

I hated it. My co-workers dumping it with me hated it. It was awful. It was pure waste.

We have a goodwill ACROSS THE STREET FROM US.

We had to lock the dumpster so there's no possible way anyone could get in and take the perfectly good unopened merch that could be pawned off by someone who needs the money. No way anyone could use it to better their job interview that they REALLY need to make their own money. No way they could just use this extra thing to keep them warm or shield their head.

Nothing.

Just had to throw it away.

I'm still so, SO pissed. I hate it. Such waste. Such inexplicable WASTE.
