The Road So Far: Season 6
Holy smokes. What a ride.
If you're new, this is my recap/reflection on season 6 of Supernatural. You can find all of my previous commentary under the "ashla chick flick moments" tag (or block it, if you so wish. I don't mind.)
Well. Where do I even start? The beginning, I guess.
Dean got out. That's... so monumental. Obviously, it didn't last, but I truly believe that if the Winchesters were less famous then he could have made it. I understand why people don't like Lisa, but I can still see them being good together, and I think that he really did love her, and he absolutely loved Ben like his own. Speaking of Ben, the kid's acting was... not great, but it's a child actor, so I'll give it a pass. As it is, I'm a firm believer that Ben is Dean's son, biological or not.
I guess we have to talk about Sam, huh? Man, there were so many times when I wanted to just. Slap him. Or punch him in the face with a brick. Either would work. Even when he got his soul back, he got right back into his pushy self. I get that he wanted to "atone," but he really just did not get it.
Speaking of slapping people, Cas. Oh my stars, this angel is so stupid. Like, yeah, the boys could've been more appreciative for what he did for them, but could really not see when he went too far? 6x20 The Man Who Would Be King almost made me feel bad for him, but he wouldn't back down even when it was clear that something was wrong.
This has been really depressing, so let's get into the fun stuff! Holy cow, this season had so many bangers. Count 'em up: 6x02 Two And A Half Men, 6x05 Live Free Or Twi-Hard, 6x09 Clap Your Hands If You Believe, 6x15 The French Mistake, 6x17 My Heart Will Go On, 6x18 Frontierland, and 6x21 Let It Bleed all make my list. My favorite is probably gonna be Frontierland, which is honestly one of the lesser episodes on this list, but I have reasons: 1) the Good Omens parallel was absolutely hilarious even if it was unintentional, and b) I've always thought that Samuel Colt was cool since way back in season 2. This only made him more awesome. And anyway, watching Dean in the Wild West was hilarious, if a little embarrassing. Sorry dude, but you should've known Hollywood would make things look weird.
One thing that I will say about this season is that it's all over the place. I think, after wrapping up the story all nice with a bow in season 5, they didn't really know what to do, so they just kind of improvised. It was a risky gamble, but it paid off with one or more of the fandom's favorite episodes, and one of the most memorable characters. There were multiple story arcs moving at once (Eve, Soulless!Sam, Ben and Lisa, Cas vs. Raphael) and all of them managed to fit seamlessly together. Despite all of the development that had to fit in a regularly sized season, I didn't really feel like it was rushed, especially not compared to the end of season 5. They managed to blend everything together while still keeping it manageable to understand.
Mostly, I just felt bad for Dean. In the span of weeks, he lost his semi-girlfriend, his son, and his best friend, while still juggling the emotions from his brother's close calls as well as everything else going on. Obviously, he's not the only one struggling (Bobby Singer deserves a vacation) but man, Dean needs a hug and a nap, and then another hug when he wakes up.
Baby. My beloved. The most important object in the universe. Not a prop, but one of (if not the) greatest characters on the show.
I'm so sorry. Baby deserved better. I mean first of all, you're telling me Dean just left her to sit in a garage for a year while he messed around in a station wagon? Who are you and what have you done with Dean Winchester.
And then the Mustang. That made me sick. I couldn't even look at it, it was just horrifying. And then Balthazar played it off like it didn't matter!!! That's the most important object in the universe jerk!!! Pay her some respect!!!
And she got wrecked at the end! That car has been through so much, and she does not need to be crashed into every position possible. She deserves better. Every time something bad happens to that car I die a little inside.
Well, enough about Baby (there will never be enough about Baby). The next season is supposedly about Leviathans, which could get very interesting. I could be wrong, but I also think maybe we meet Charlie next season? Well anyway, this one is usually considered as sort of the "forgotten season" (like Adam), so we'll see how it goes. I'll get started within the next couple of days. Carry on!

and it’s good
DeanCas coda to 15x19: ‘Inherit the Hearth’
He hasn’t stopped praying.
From an empty world to one filled with people, Dean has gone to his knees every night—on the floor, the gravel, the dirt—and prayed. Head down. Face pressed to his knuckles. Dear Cas…
From each failed plan to their eventual, anti-climactic victory, Dean shares it all. And when it’s all over, when they wake up the morning after with no Jack, no Cas and no world to save, it’s bittersweet. Confusing. Like being released into the wild after living in a cage.
Where does he go from here? What does he do?
What does he want?
Sam doesn’t have a problem finding his own answers, but then again, he never has; he was the one with the life outside The Life: the college boy, the dreamer. Dean… Dean needs some time to adjust. Regroup. Grieve, maybe—whatever the hell that looks like. So, he serves himself a bottle of Jack, grabs a box of Pop Tarts, and makes his way to his recliner. First day of freedom? Dr. Sexy and sweet oblivion sound awesome.
“Hey, uh, what’re you—” Sam cuts himself off, skidding to a halt in the doorway of the Dean Cave. He’s got that pinched look on his face, the one that means: inevitable bitch face, concerned edition. Dean waves him off.
“Chilling out,” he mutters, taking a long pull from the bottle. “Figure I deserve a vacation.”
Sam narrows his eyes. “A vacation.”
“Yeah, genius. A vacation. You know, a little me time?” Dean takes another pull. “You got a problem with that?”
Sam shifts his weight. Frowns at the floor. It’s weird to see him like this; he’s so big, now, but that move is straight out of his teen years—when he’d been gangly and awkward and angry and unsure. He looks up, resolved, and Dean heaves an internal sigh. Whatever the fuck Sam is trying to do, he doesn’t want any part in it.
“What if you come with me?”
“Nope.”
“Dean—”
“Look, Sammy, we fought the big fight, we won, there ain’t nothing left to do,” Dean says reasonably, bitterly, turning back to the DVD menu. “So I don’t wanna go into town, or to the store, or wherever else you’re planning on gallivanting to today. I’m gonna watch my show, drown myself in booze and pass the fuck out, because that is what I’m owed. Capiche?”
“Eileen texted. I’m… I’m going to go get her.”
It’s weird, Dean thinks, how many times a heart can break. He clenches his jaw and swallows the lump in his throat, blinking rapidly. Allows himself a second—one second—of envy and jealousy before he slaps a smile on his face and nods. “Good,” he says. He means it. “You should.”
“So…” Sam trails off.
“So…” Dean echoes.
“…Come with.”
“Sam, I’m not gonna crash your romantic reunion okay? That’s weird.”
“Dean—”
“Sam.” And there’s more that comes out in that word than he ever intended. It hangs heavy in the air between them before dropping to the ground like a stone. Loud. Shattering on impact. Dean thinks his voice might have cracked and his vision is blurring because this pity? This is fucking worse. Shoving a Pop Tart in his mouth, Dean chews with his mouth open in the vain hope that his table manners will prove an adequate distraction, but that shit hasn’t worked for a long time.
It tastes like sawdust.
“Just go,” he says. “You have to go, man.”
It’s as much a plea for his brother as it is for himself, and for one long, terrifying moment Dean thinks Sam’s going to refuse. That he’s gonna be dragged across the country to witness his brother find happiness in a way he will never be able to have.
…But Sam is kind, not cruel, and when those big eyes of his fill with tears, Dean has never been so happy to have given himself up. He watches as his little brother’s shoulders slump. As he readjusts his duffle.
“I’ll be home in two days,” Sam says. “If you’re dead, I’m gonna pissed.”
“Yeah yeah,” Dean replies, forcing himself to tease. To be excited. He deserves this. “Go sing in the rain or whatever.”
“Or whatever,” Sam volleys back, a smile tugging up the corner of his mouth. He looks so happy, and Dean can’t stop himself from mirroring the expression. It hits him all at once, then—a sucker punch to the gut, the heart—that no matter what, he did right by his little brother. That he’s grown up to be smart, and kind and caring, and now he can be happy. And Dean—Dean’ll figure it out. But Sam’s taken care of and that’s… good. That’s a lot.
“Hey, Dean?”
“Mm.”
“I love you,” Sam says. He’s seven and thirty-seven and Dean feels something inside himself ease and break all at once.
“Yeah,” he murmurs. “I love you, too.”
Sam grins.
***
There’s no more frozen pizza.
It’s already a fucking travesty that the pizza place doesn’t deliver to their secret underground bunker, but Jack polished off the last two pies—and while it’s a little bit hilarious to think of the ‘New God’ (his kid) scarfing down shitty plain cheese in his pjs, it’s also awful, and painful. So Dean slips on his shoes, grabs his keys, and shoulders on the jacket with Cas’s handprint over his hole-y sleep shirt.
It’s not like he’s sober, but he’s done worse.
It feels like a shitty pizza day, so Dean makes a beeline for the Wal-Mart and its frozen section, stocking up on two of every topping from the cheapest brand they’ve got. He grabs popcorn, chips, twizzlers and margarita mix, because fuck it, and smiles at the cashier. It’s not an epic romantic reunion, but this is what normal people do, right? They take an entire day and wallow without the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Dean’s cradling his spoils, twizzler hanging out of his mouth, shuffling out of the garage when—
He freezes.
The kitchen. There’s someone banging around in the kitchen.
Not like aggressively banging—one quick sweep around the area confirms no signs of forced entry—but just like… moving shit. Washing the dishes from this morning, or getting ready to make something new. Dean’s heart is caught between hope and heartbreak and he forces himself towards the latter. It’s probably Charlie, or Bobby or Jody or Donna or, hell, even Jack or Claire. No one else can get in. And if it’s something dangerous… well, Dean doesn’t have a weapon on him, and his damn pizza’s thawing.
But it’s not Charlie or Bobby or Jody or Donna. It’s not Jack. It’s not Claire.
…It’s Cas; freshly showered, dressed in Dean’s fucking clothes, making himself a sandwich.
He’s beautiful. Dean’s shirt—AC/DC, the one with the mustard stain on the collar—is just a little small on him, and he’s humming, and Dean has to blink once twice three times to make sure he’s not a goddamn mirage but no he’s still there, still scooping grape jelly onto the good bread and then putting the dirty spoon on the counter like a friggin’ heathen and—
“Are you gonna wash that?”
It’s sure as fuck not what he’d meant to say, but it gets the job done. Cas drops the spoon—the spoon—and whirls around like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. “Dean,” he breathes, like Dean’s name is some kind of benediction. Like it’s important.
Dean clutches his groceries tighter to his chest. “A-Are you…?” he asks. Steps forward. Steps back. Stares because he can’t, he can’t— “Are you real?”
Cas is barefoot. He’s quiet when he steps across the linoleum. His hair is turning fluffy where it’s drying and his eyes are blue and bright and he’s a miracle. “I’m real,” he confirms quietly. His hand twitches by his side, and Dean thinks that’s fair. Thinks that he gets that Cas has reservations because of—because.
But they’re unfounded.
Dean drops his spoils because they’re an afterthought; nothing is more important than knowing, than reaching out to touch his fingertips to Cas’s shoulder. To his jaw. He can’t stop the tears from springing to his eyes like he can’t stop himself from laughing. Smiling. And suddenly he has Cas in his arms and he smells like Dean’s soap and Sam’s fancy shampoo, and they’re holding—clutching each other, and Dean turns his head because it has to be now he has to say it now: “Cas, I—”
“I know,” Cas interrupts. “You don’t have to—I know.”
“Yeah?” Dean asks, voice high with something like hysteria. The whole thing is so absurd, so insane, so fucked, that it’s all he can do to bury his face in Cas’s neck. To squeeze his eyes shut. To talk. “Well, you’re a friggin’ moron,” he says. “And you got no goddamn idea what you’re talking about, because—because you changed me, too, you dick.” Cas’s fingers dig into Dean’s waist and Dean’s heart pounds like it’s trying to escape and his throat is dry and he’s sweating and he’s gonna be sick, he’s gonna die— “A-And I love you.”
He wrenches himself away, then, glaring like he dares Cas to take the words away from him. “Okay?” he asks, rhetorically. Menacingly. It’s a declaration and a confession and a challenge. And Cas meets his stare unflinchingly. He reaches up to thumb at the wetness on the apple of Dean’s cheek. “Okay,” he says. He nods. Leans in. “Okay.” Their mouths brush. “Good.”
It’s not even a real kiss, so Dean can’t be blamed for how he chases; how he breathes good, in faint agreement like a lovesick fool, and moves until they’re kissing good and proper—slow and sweet and then deep and wet and it’s good, it’s so good, he’s so good.
Later, they’ll have to make every thawed pizza. They’ll drink the margarita mix and share the same popcorn bowl and pay no attention to Dr. Sexy playing in the background. They’ll talk about Chuck and Jack and Sam. They’ll stare. They’ll tease. They’ll flirt.
But for now, Cas twists his hands in Dean’s shirt and Dean buries his hands in dark hair. They pause for breath only to come together, again and again and again.
And it’s good.

Note
Why exactly do you see Dean as gay rather than bi? Absolutely feel free to completely ignore this ask if you don't want to go into it - it's just I've heard that interpretation a few times here on Tumblr and I'd genuinely be really interested to hear your thoughts behind it, and how you relate it to the way Dean canonically acts on the show
the pithy answer is projection! the unpithy answer is that out of 320 episodes over the span of 15 years, there is one (1) where his attraction comes off as genuine to me, and it took place fifteen years ago (cassie). i’m a lesbian, and when i was younger i had really genuine and meaningful friendships with men that i thought meant i was in love with them. they were very dear friends to me and i cared deeply about them, and they continue to be dear to me and people i care deeply about now that my head’s on straighter. so that’s that point.
this is. going to be a long post so this is the preemptive warning to everyone who can’t read tumblr paragraphs to zip scroll.
lisa straight up reads as a lavender marriage to me. the focus for both lisa AND dean is him stepping in to be a father figure. their conversations about how much they care about each other center around how good he is with ben/how much he loves ben. there’s like, nothing where they’re smiling at each other and actually enjoying each other’s company. she’s a two night stand he’s seen 4 times in the last decade. she is dean putting on his brave face and keeping his promise. lisa’s post dean boyfriend matt is in one episode for about 3 minutes purely so he can die, but this is the scene.
Tumblr media
so like. lisa is CAPABLE of interacting with a man she’s dating in a way that looks like they’re dating, versus. this.
Tumblr media
so that’s that point. we’re at season six and we’ve already gone through every long term relationship with a woman dean’s been in. but let’s get really technical! let’s go through bad boys and after school special and amara to boot.
in bad boys, robin is dean’s first real crush when he’s fifteen or so. first crush being when you’re 15 rather than in elementary or middle school? gay behavior (joke). let those among us who have not had a straight crush as a teen because they were the first person to be nice to us throw the first stone! and that’s what it boils down to for me. it’s the first time dean’s had ANY stability, and he relishes it. it would not surprise me if she’s his first real friend. she’s definitely his first real NORMAL friend. she asks him what HE likes, what HE wants to do with his life. and that’s totally new for dean! to have choices and to have his wants given consideration instead of just having expectation after expectation loaded onto him.
it does not surprise me that dean, who’s been taking a masterclass in repression and masculinity since the tender age of four, dates robin. it would not surprise me if he dated robin and was gay. of course he’s going to throw himself 100% into a relationship with a girl when he knows he’s at an age where boys are supposed to be skirt chasers, when he meets a girl and she’s NICE to him and KNOWS him like literally no one else does. all of this accompanied by the “i am a boy and have positive feelings for someone who’s a girl this MUST be romance this MUST be a crush” like. this is going to get into overshare territory for a moment i apologize but As A Lesbian when i was 15/16 i actively had crushes on girls and rational-ed them away as Girl Best Friends :) while telling everyone that the feelings i had for my boy best friends were crushes aksdkfkndf. repressed gay people are stupid and dean is MUCH more repressed than me aged 16. so. robin box ticked.
after school special: jail for dabb jail for dabb for a thousand years i know. trust me i know. BUT. 17 year old dean who’s fully pulled on the leather jacket and womanizer persona, who doesn’t talk to anyone in his class and just hangs out in janitor closets making out with a girl who thinks his persona is hot. and when she tries to get close to him, to form an emotional connection, he panics and self sabotages. which. yes. peak straight man behavior. i’m not arguing that this little characterization bit is the pillar upon which gay dean rests, i’m saying if you’re inclined, you can nudge it into gay kid going “oh no this is too much responsibility i gotta get out of this” behavior. and i’m inclined!
amara: the amara stuff is so. hdnfdkf. it’s this primordial connection or whatever stronger than dean and amara both and yet dean’s still able to buck it a few times for [drumroll........] cas! + i don’t have any of the posts on hand but i DO agree with the whole vibe of. “i would fuck the embodiment of my destruction and horrors and failings because my self loathing is THAT strong”. also: gay af for the being of destruction with an immutable pull on you and towards you to say i will give you your greatest desire and then give you your mommy back and dip.
and then there’s the various one night stand stuff. i don’t have the comprehensive list on hand, but off the top of my head these are times when dean has sex scenes that are given huge focus:
when he comes back from hell and everyone’s gently asking if he’s fine and he’s like could a guy who wasn’t fine do THIS [tries to sleep with a bartender and or angel]. when bobby dies and dean’s hardcore mourning and hardcore drinking to the point where i think his drinking is acknowledged for one of a true handful of times in the series. just checked the transcript for that one. the morning after:
DEAN: Ugh.
SAM: You look like crap.
DEAN: Yeah, well, I feel worse than I look. I do recommend the Cobalt Room, by the way. Awesome night. Although I think I'm getting too old for this.
which. again. normal straight man commitmentphobe hitting his 30s and going hmmm.... perhaps real connections would be nice? but that doesn’t contradict gay dean at all, it slots in. also this is season 7. season 7 and he’s too old for this. top of my head i can think of two more similar instances: s11 baby when he groans and goes “mistakes were made”, s13 advanced thanatology when cas is dead and he’s FULL ON grieving so hard that sam takes him to a strip club. and again. he over does it. again he throws himself too hard to the coping vices and when he wakes up he’s tired and sore and has a headache. the other time he gets laid is endverse, which uh. is basically dean in 24/7 mourn drink sleep with someone mode. there are like... a handful of times he has sex For Fun, enough to count on one hand. the rest are all real easy to slap the label PERFORMANCE or COPING WITH MOURNING on.
obviously all of these points go either way - you could absolutely interpret them as legit attraction to women. you can interpret them as legit attraction to women while these instances are still coping/performance. but for me personally they all end up on the gay column instead of the bi column. um. end manifesto i think.

Dean’s POV
Two Weeks Later
“Oh fuck yeah!” said Dean, jumping up and down in the driveway as he read over the letter in his hands.
“Dr. Dean that’s a bad word,” said Emily, the five year old three houses down. Dean slapped a hand over his face as she rode past on her bike, her father laughing to himself.
“Hope it’s good news, Dean,” said Chris.
“Very. Sorry about that,” said Dean, Chris waving him off as Dean jogged back inside. He read over the letter again and looked through the packet. “Alright. As long as you keep a B average or above you’re golden kiddo. You get straight A’s anyways so that shouldn’t be a problem.”
Dean smiled and gathered up all of the documents, getting them together with Tessa’s birthday present. Y/N had tried to tell him that giving away his old iPhone was too much but all it did was sit in a drawer now when it worked perfectly fine. He was pretty sure she wasn’t going to be thinking about the phone at all once she found out about the grant.
He looked back at the bag on the table and frowned. Maybe she’d take it the wrong way, like he was trying to save her sister or their family or something like that. He could have given them the application and had them fill it out. They would have probably gotten it still. Dean knew his letter he’d included didn’t hurt but he didn’t want to be that guy. He was already a doctor, already helped Y/N with a job, already paid for dates and things. It was no issue for him at all and he knew she didn’t care about the money but he didn’t want to rub it in her face that he could help more than she could.
Dean grabbed his phone and called Cas, Sam stuck in some network client thing all night he’d told him. It rang a few times before it picked up, the echo in the background telling him he was on speaker.
“Deano!” said Benny. “Gonna make it over tonight after all?”
“Hey guys,” said Dean, sitting down on his couch. “You got the crew together?”
“Nah, just us and the girls. They’re still out shopping. What’s up?” asked Cas.
“You know Y/N?” asked Dean.
“The girl you’re clearly in love with? Yes we know her,” laughed Benny. Dean was quiet and heard them shift on the other end.
“Everything okay?” asked Cas.
“I think I fucked it up. I think I’m going too far too fast.”
“What do you mean?” asked Benny.
“Tessa, her little sister, she’s in high school and I applied for a grant on her behalf for her college and she got it,” said Dean.
“That’s a problem how?” asked Cas.
“I don’t want it to come off as me trying to save them or anything. I’m nervous she’s gonna get mad at me,” said Dean. His friends were quiet and knew a teasing comment wouldn’t come. “Guys.”
“Tell her you applied on a long shot and a grant is what helped you with school. You’re not saving the day, just sharing a benefit you got,” said Benny. “Shit I wish I’d had someone do that for me.”
“What’s going on Dean? You’re normally the last person to freak over shit,” said Cas. Dean sat back and stared up at the ceiling.
“Talk to us bud,” said Benny.
“I like this girl and it’s been years and years since I had a girlfriend. You guys know I’m not good for more than a fuck,” said Dean.
“Lisa was a super bitch and you know that’s not true,” said Benny.
“I am in my thirties and I’ve never had a real relationship. I don’t even know how. I’m gonna fuck this up so bad. I know it.”
“Contrary to how often I call you a dick, you are one of the best people I’ve ever met,” said Cas.
“I agree and you know all our friends and especially Sammy would say the same thing. Brother you gotta relax. This girl from what you’ve said and everybody else says, well we ain’t never seen you so happy so stop freaking, go get ready for your date tonight and put some faith in this girl that she’s not gonna hurt you back,” said Benny.
“I didn’t say-”
“Dean, we’ve known you forever. We know when you’re scared. I know most people in your life end up hurting you but take it from us, not everyone will. I got a good vibe from her,” said Cas.
“Me too,” said Dean quietly.
“You doing okay?” asked Benny. “In general you know.”
“Yeah. Most of the time I’m great now. The past few weeks have been awesome. I think maybe that’s why I keep freaking out over this girl. It’s like, fucking finally, I understand what a good relationship can be.”
“You been to Ketch lately?” asked Cas.
“No, not as a patient. I’m okay.”
“Well still go for a tag up every once in a while for us,” said Benny.
“I know. Never would have gone without you assholes getting on my back in the first place.”
“That’s what friends are for,” said Cas, Benny chuckling. “So where you guys going tonight?”
“Monico’s.”
“Fancy,” they both said and Dean rolled his eyes, smiling to himself.
“Goodbye assholes,” said Dean, hearing them laugh before he hung up. He sat up and took a deep breath. “Alright. Shower. Shave and fingers crossed tonight goes well.”
Reader’s POV
“Okay, presents before or after dinner?” you asked as you carried in a bag to Tessa’s room.
“Before, obviously,” she said.
“Alright, well I know you wanted something really badly this year,” you said. “Why don’t you open the green one first?”
“This feels like an iPhone box…” she said with a big smile. She tore off the paper and grinned. “Awesome! What one is it?”
“It’s a ten. It’s used but in really good condition. I got you a case and extra charger too,” you said. “We can swing to the store and activate it tomorrow.”
“Thanks, Y/N, really,” she said. She grabbed the card next and her eyes went wide when she saw the cash inside. “Y/N.”
“It’s your money you gave me. It’s yours. Buy whatever you want, okay?” you said. She nodded and unwrapped a few more small things, a book she’d been talking about, some make up you knew she’d use, a new pair of her nike running shorts that’d been on sale thankfully. You smirked when she picked up the last two presents in the bag. “Alright. I hope these are...suitable for you.”
She tore off the wrapping on one and started to laugh.
“It’s hot pink,” she giggled. “Why is it hot pink?”
“Cause vibrators come in a variety of colors,” you said with a laugh. “I will let you read through the charging instructions on your own and same for the other box. There is toy cleaner because yes you need to wash these things properly and I got some water based lube. Go with water based. It dries up faster but it works better to me. Oh and wash everything like five times before it goes anywhere near anything, okay?”
“Okay,” she laughed. “I can’t believe you actually bought me this stuff.”
“Can’t get pregnant off a toy,” you said.
“Definitely can’t do that,” said Dean, Tessa wide eyed as he popped his head into the doorway. She shoved the boxes back into the bag and he laughed. “I’m a doctor. Sex doesn’t bother me and I think your sister has a point.”
“Oh my God, I forgot he was here,” she said, running her hands over her face.
“I was wondering where you two ran off to,” he said. He stepped inside and pulled out a box from behind his back. “Happy birthday, Tessa.”
“Thanks,” she blushed. She undid the bow and paper, smiling as she opened the box. There was an envelope inside but she picked up the headphones and shook her head. “Dean I can’t accept this. It’s too much. I already know the iPhone must have been yours.”
“You are smarter than you look,” he said. “But I can’t accept your refusal of my present. I have new ones and those never get used and I’m bigger than you so you’re gonna lose this argument one way or the other.”
“I’d listen to him, Tessa. He gets his way when he wants it,” you said. She rolled her eyes but smiled.
“Thank you. People haven’t been nice to us the past couple years,” she said. You glanced down to the floor, Dean leaving his arm wrapped around your waist.
“People weren’t all that nice to me either for a long time,” he said with a nod. “Someday when you’re able, you help somebody else out, understand?”
“Yeah,” she said with a nod.
“Open the envelope. This one’s a present to you both,” he said. You cocked your head as she tore it open, reading for a long time before she pulled out a paper and handed it to you.
“Dean,” you said, sitting down on her bed after you’d read it a few times. “Dean this…”
“It’s a grant. It’s very similar to a scholarship. I’m an alumni of Elmdale and the medical school there. Tessa you qualify and so I applied on your behalf a few weeks ago and you were accepted. The grant will cover half of four years of tuition,” he said.
“What does that mean?” asked Tessa.
“It means we will have to pay very little with financial aid,” you said. She was beaming and you shook your head. “You applied weeks ago?”
“After I met you two. This house seemed familiar to me for some reason until I remembered. Y/N I told you someone helped me when I was eighteen?”
“Yeah?”
“I think his picture is hanging in the hall,” he said.
“Our dad?” asked Tessa.
“He got me a job and helped me pay for part of my school. I came here once when I needed his help. Your father was a very good man and it’s clear his daughters are the same. Neither one of you deserves to go through all the pain I did. I don’t want you to. It was no trouble at all to do, I swear.”
“Tessa, I work at Dean’s office as a lab tech,” you said. She turned her head and you saw Dean nod. “I lost my job before. We were scraping by. Barely. We’re okay now but without this grant...it would have wiped out our inheritance. That was for weddings and down payments for houses. We can keep it now...we can keep the house now.”
“You hate this house though,” she said. “I hate this house.”
“Tessa-”
“We can downsize,” she said. “Y/N, every night you stare down at their bedroom door. It’s like we live with ghosts or something. It doesn’t have to be so tight. Do we really need a five bedroom house?”
“It’s not as tight anymore. We’ll talk about it. Let’s go celebrate all the good news,” you said. “I’ve been dying for a Monico’s steak.”
“She seemed pretty happy tonight,” said Dean as you sat on the front porch a few hours later. You hummed and rocked in your seat beside him, resting your head on his shoulder. “Did I overstep?”
“No. You were the boy in the mailroom, weren’t you. Dad used to talk about you sometimes. Mostly when I didn’t want to do something. He told me some people my age have it so much harder.”
“True. But you can’t compare one person’s struggles to another’s. It’s not fair to either one.”
“Would you sell this house if you were me?” you asked.
“I like that you live close by. I’d miss that. But it’s a lotta house for the two of you and it sounds like a change might be a good thing. You could downsize to somewhere else in the neighborhood and probably bank a good chunk of money for later on.”
“We could.” Dean was quiet, gears turning in his head. “What are you thinking of?”
“My house is a five bedroom too.”
“Yours is also newer,” you said. “And bigger.”
“Tell me if I’m crossing a line but...you guys...could stay there if you decided to sell this place. Temporarily. Or not temporarily,” he said. You stared up at him and he looked away. “Like I said, I’m sorry, I know it’s...I should go.”
“Hey. I’m not afraid of you.” His head turned back towards you and he swallowed thickly. “Tell me another secret and I’ll you one.”
“I think I I’m falling in love with you and I’m afraid I’m going too fast and that you think I’m creepy or weird deep down and I’m up to something when all I really see is me and my brother in you and your sisters places and I know how much it sucks and how much it hurts and I know you protect her from stuff she doesn’t even know about. I’m sorry for saying that about the house just now. I’d still like to see you though if that’s okay.”
“I think this is fast too but I also think that part of me fell for you the day you carried her home. You don’t want anything from us. Just to help and it’s not because you pity us or anything like that. If I’ve learned anything yet in life it’s that you don’t know when it’s gonna stop and there’s no use in wasting time.”
“What are you saying?”
“You willing to put up with a teenager, a service dog and someone who has not had a moment to themselves in two years?”
“As long as you don’t snore,” he smiled. You laughed and kissed his cheek. “Are you serious?”
“I don’t like this house anymore. If she doesn’t want it, I don’t want it. Maybe we can do some test runs, stay over for a weekend or two, see if we want to make it a not temporary thing.”
“That sounds great,” he smiled. “We’ll figure it out, sweetheart.”
Two Months Later
“I’m home,” you said on the way back from the store. You’d been staying at Dean’s for two weeks now after a nice couple closed on your old house. So far it’d been great and you were perfectly happy to stay there with him and Tessa for the foreseeable future. “I picked up some-”
“He is not my dad. I am eighteen,” said Tessa as she stormed over to the foyer. You glanced back to where Dean was over in the kitchen and sighed. “I want to go to Paulie’s tonight.”
“Who is Paulie?” you asked as you kicked off your boots.
“A friend,” she said.
“You’ve literally never mentioned him before,” you said, carrying some groceries through the family room and to the kitchen.
“That’s what I said,” said Dean as he peeled a potato at the island.
“I thought I said you’re not my dad so you can shut the fuck up.”
“Hey!” you shouted, Tessa freezing up. “Apologize to Dean.”
“He-”
“We are stable for the first time ever because of him. I trust Dean to make decisions for you when I’m not home. If he said no, then the answer is no. Go to your room,” you said. She grumbled and pounded her feet upstairs. You washed up and gripped the countertop. “I’m sorry. I can’t believe she said that to you.”
“It’s okay. I’ll be the bad guy,” he said as he picked up another potato. “Paulie what’s his face doesn’t sound like he wants anything other than in her pants so she can swear all she likes at me.”
“What’d she say exactly?”
“She wants to go over to Paulie’s tonight to hang out with some friends but I overheard her and Hailey talking earlier this week about a party and I don’t need a medical degree to put it together.”
“If she sneaks out I’ll kill her,” you said. You glanced down to Toast’s dog bowl and paused. “Dean what would happen if she drank on her medication.”
“She can’t drink alcohol on that stuff,” he said.
“What would happen if she did.”
“She could have a seizure,” he said.
“Tessa!” you shouted. You jogged upstairs and found her bedroom empty. “Tessa!”
The house was quiet and you put your hands on your head.
“Toast!” you shouted, the dog trotting out from Dean’s bedroom. You immediately ran inside, Dean already upstairs and you saw her sitting out on the balcony in a chair, her face in her knees.
“Can I…” said Dean and you nodded. You followed him outside, Dean walking over and squatting by her seat. “Tessa, what are you doing out here?”
“I wish I was normal, didn’t have a fucked up head.”
“I got one too,” he said.
“Do you have to take medicine for seizures? No?” she said.
“No but my dad used to beat me up,” he said. She turned and he nodded. “He would try to beat up my little brother too sometimes but I would take the hits when I could. Tessa, you can’t drink when you’re on your medicine. You just can’t.”
“I know that,” she said.
“You can’t sneak out and leave Toast behind either. It’s not safe.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“Y/N and I get scared too is all.”
“You just pretend to like me cause you fuck my sister.”
“For the record, I don’t fuck your sister. Relationships are complicated. You might not realize this but I care about you for you. If I didn’t I would not want you in my house, in our house, and I wouldn’t get scared about you going to parties with guys that just want to use you for sex. I give a shit about you Tessa whether you believe me or not.”
“You don’t care,” she scoffed. “You feel sorry for us. Nobody on earth would ask two strangers to move in unless you-”
“Tessa you can think whatever you want about me. I’m not your father and I’ll never try to be him. But I sure as shit know how to be an older brother. So be pissed off and be rude and whatever else you want to. I’ve done this before with my own brother. You don’t scare me. The only thing that does is you getting taken advantage of or you getting hurt and Toast isn’t there to help. Someday you’ll get it through that thick skull of yours what the truth is but until then, I’ll be the asshole who doesn’t let you go to parties you’ll get hurt at.”
“You pity us.”
“I’m jealous of you.” She stared at him and you swallowed in the doorway. “Your parents loved you. Mine didn’t. You want to talk about being fucked up? I’m here anytime.”
She nodded and he sat up on the bench with her. You went inside and finished preparing the potatoes, mashing them up and saving them for later. It was nearly ten by the time you heard the stairs creak and Dean walked down them.
“Y/N,” said Tessa. You got up from the couch and walked to the bottom of the stairs, Tessa glancing down. “I’m sorry for how I’ve acted today and treated Dean lately. I was…”
“It’s okay,” he said quietly as he rubbed her back.
“I was scared when we moved in here a few weeks ago. I don’t want to lose you too and Dean takes up time that it used to be just us and I know the accident wasn’t my fault but I feel guilty still sometimes and I know your life is different because of it too and I want you guys to be happy, I do. I just get scared you’ll forget about me. I don’t wanna be alone. I’m not ready.”
“You don’t ever have to be alone, Tessa,” you said. She nodded and looked up at Dean.
“I know. I was silly. But I’m better now,” she said.
“It wasn’t your fault,” you said.
“I know,” she said.
“Why don’t you head to bed, Tess. Tomorrow I can come to your session with you like we talked about,” said Dean. She nodded and walked upstairs, Toast trotting into her room. You walked upstairs and into your bedroom with Dean, shutting the door after yourselves. “I should have...change is difficult on kids with PTSD. I should have realized that’s why she’s been so snippy. I thought it was just hormones.”
“Probably both,” you said, climbing onto the bed. He lay down next to you, staring up at the ceiling. “You care for her.”
“You two are a package deal, sweetheart,” he said with a light chuckle. “Can’t love one without loving the other.”
“Like you and Sam,” you smiled. “I can’t wait to meet him in person.”
“Me too.”
“Is Tessa okay? You guys talked a really long time.”
“She was afraid I would replace her, push her out. Granted I do like spending alone time with you and everything but she needs you and I’m not here to take you away from her. I think she understands that now.”
“Dean why haven’t we had sex?” you asked. He sat up and you shrugged. “We’ve dated nearly three months and you don’t even try to cop a feel. For how fast certain things are between us, that one feels a little slow. I just want to understand. I don’t...I’m not saying it’s a problem I just want to know.”
“You asked me on our first date, or you made a comment, that I don’t seem like the shy around women type.”
“Yeah?”
“I didn’t use to be. A smidge, especially if they were the one that seemed to be controlling the situation but it was always good. I had some girlfriends, had some hookups. More than my fair share of hookups. The girlfriends…”
“The bitch one?” you said, getting a chuckle out of him.
“I stopped thinking I was relationship material for a while. So I did hookups for a long time and that was good. Until about two years ago. I haven’t had sex since.”
“Did someone hurt you?”
“No. I just...I asked her to stop and she didn’t.”
“Dean she hurt you.”
“It’s not that big a deal.”
“Yes, it is.”
“Well I don’t want to talk about it anymore, okay?” he said. He put his back to you and you took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I know we sleep in the same bed and…”
“And I don’t need to have sex with you. Would I like it? Sure. But my sister and I aren’t the only ones in this house that need to be taken care of. You’ve done a really good job of that lately and I’d like to start pulling my weight in that department. When you’re ready for sex, you tell me, otherwise, I will just cuddle you real hard until then, okay?”
“Alright,” he said quietly. He reached behind himself and wrapped your arms around him. You kissed the back of his neck, Dean taking slow breaths. “I don’t really know how to let someone take care of me though.”
“We’ll take it slow,” you said. “Like maybe with you being little spoon tonight.”
“Alright. I can try, sweetheart.”

Cas didn’t want to be here.
Well, that was a lie.
He wanted to be here… but he wasn’t an obsessed bastard like the rest of the guys here. He wasn’t gonna cheat and fake it to get ahead. He hadn’t even submitted a damn audition tape.
But he was here now, so he was gonna try. And Lisa seemed like a nice enough girl… maybe there was something there. And the guys, regardless of their questionable motives and outlooks on life, were miles beyond easy on the eyes. They were fucking hot.
The first rose ceremony had been a mixture of nerves and hope. He wasn’t exactly sure if he was hopeful of getting sent home or getting to stay, but either way, he was here now. And there was no going back (he could leave… but honestly the free food and nice house made it worth sticking around for just a little longer).
After they toasted, Lisa was whisked away and the producers briefed them on how the different rooms were assigned. Apparently, they weren’t even adult enough to decide their own sleeping arrangements, but he guessed they were probably doing it for the drama anyway.
There were five or six guys in every room. Which was just fine by him. Until it wasn’t.
A producer he didn’t know the name of led them up the stairs into the narrow hallway that led into several other bedrooms. He stood in front of one and called out five names.
“Benny, Harry, Cas, Nick, and, uh,” he glanced down at a clipboard before pointing behind Cas, “Dean. You guys are in this one.”
Cas felt his stomach drop but he kept his face set, there were still cameras on them, after all. Even at night. Even while they slept. Besides, he could deal with Nick, Benny, and even Dean for the short while it would take for them to get sent home. At least Harry wasn’t so bad.
The producer moved on and the rest of the guys followed him while Dean and Benny shuffled into the room, followed by the other three.
Cas walked to the center of the room where their suitcases lay waiting for them and grabbed his, barely sparing a glance at the rest of the guys before climbing onto the top bunk and falling back to stare at the ceiling.
When he forced himself to sit back up, Benny and Harry had claimed the other bunk bed and Nick had sprawled dramatically on the twin in the corner. Dean was just standing in the middle of the room glancing around dumbly.
He glared up at Benny who just shrugged and gestured at his claimed top bunk before jumping off it and rummaging through his suitcase.
“Looks like you’re with me, Winchester,” Cas said, keeping his voice neutral but seething underneath. When Dean looked up at him with barely concealed horror he hid a smile. Time to make the straight boys uncomfortable. “As long as I’m on top,” he added as an afterthought.
Dean just scoffed and grabbed his suitcases before shoving one under the bed and pulling a pair of gray sweats and a loose black t-shirt out.
The other guys moved sluggishly after him, sitting up and rubbing their eyes before getting a change of clothes out. He half expected them to sleep in their tuxes… at least they weren’t that sloppy.
There was only one bathroom on the whole second floor, which was maybe the stupidest part of the whole thing, so Benny, Nick, and Harry all got away to brush their teeth before all the other guys got there.
Cas climbed down from his bed and grabbed his suitcase, resisting the urge to look up at Dean. It was just them in the room now.
He was the exact kind of guy Cas had expected to find here. Arrogant, unfeeling, fuckboy vibes practically rolling off him. He was a dick. But Cas had plenty of experience with dicks.
He changed quickly, and he could almost feel Dean’s eyes burning into him until he looked up and Dean jerked his head away. Cas smirked and climbed back onto the bed, exhaustion seeping in.
Cas took deep breaths as the quiet sound of Dean’s clothes rustling filled the room. Then the bed shifted slightly as Dean settled in below him. With a sigh, he rolled over and pulled the blankets up closer around his neck. It was going to be a long couple of weeks.
He woke up late, looking around blurrily as the sun filtered in through the small window in the corner. He could see Nick, Benny, and Harry all fast asleep in the beds across from him, but when he pulled himself down the ladder (why had he chosen a top bunk again?) Dean’s bed was neatly made and empty.
Cas shrugged and grabbed some clothes from his suitcase before heading to the bathroom. Then he checked his watch, 8:07 am. Okay, so he hadn’t woken up that late.
By the time he was heading down the stairs, the smell of freshly brewed coffee was wafting up from the kitchen. His mouth watered and he rubbed his eyes as he wandered inside, ignoring the camera crew standing to the side and going over a clipboard.
“Morning, sunshine,” Dean said without looking up. “Chris is bringing by the first date card- God, that sounds stupid aloud,” Cas snorted in agreement, “Anyway, he’s bringing it by in an hour or so. I made some food. You hungry?”
Cas squinted, looking at the man in front of him. This isn’t what he’d expected from Dean. Maybe from Mick or even Benny… They seemed like they had their lives together. But Dean?
“What are you doing?” he finally asked.
Dean frowned, looking back to the stove where he was stirring some scrambled eggs. “Making breakfast.”
“Why are you up?” Cas asked, his head tilting further in confusion.
He thought he saw a shadow flit briefly across Dean’s face but before he could be sure, it was gone. “Always get up early. It’s how my dad raised me. Now, c’mon. Get some food.”
“Coffee first,” Cas said dryly, glancing back at the camera focused on them and pushing past Dean to the coffee pot.
The other guys trickled down slowly, clapping Dean on the back and helping themselves to eggs, bacon, and fresh coffee.
Dean took it all well, an easy smile on his face, and Cas felt a stab of jealousy. Pretty, a good cook, charismatic, must be a fun way to go through life.
Some of the guys went out to the pool area, walking around the grounds, but most of them stayed inside, trading meaningless conversation. Before long, one of the producers who had been directing the cameras all morning got the guys from outside and gathered everyone in the living room.
It’s all so fake, Cas thought bitterly, as the producers explained how there would be a knock on the door, Chris was coming to do the date card, blah blah blah. No one actually fell in love on this show. And if they did… then it was pure chance.
He tried to school his face, mindful of the cameras, and looked up expectantly when Chris knocked.
Gordon got up to get it and they watched him go, the forced conversation dying down.
“Gentleman,” Chris said, rubbing his hands together as he walked into the room. “How’s it going? Liking the house?”
Cas smiled and nodded with the rest of the guys, his eyes wandering around, staring pointlessly at the other contestants.
“And what do we think of Lisa?”
That got a bigger reaction, a murmur of conversation running through the room while a few guys got to say their piece.
Good for them, they’ll make it into the episode, even if they don’t get chosen for the date.
“Alright,” Chris said, after congratulating them all again, “Let’s talk about how this works. This week, there’ll be three dates. One group date, two one-on-one dates. If you get a rose on any of the dates, you’re safe. However, if you do not receive a rose on a one-on-one date, you will have to go home. Make the best of those. I have your first date card right here for the one-on-one.”
Most of the guys had been zoning out through Chris’ whole explanation. They knew how it worked. They didn’t need to watch him say the same words he’d said over and over every year. But at the last sentence, they all leaned forward expectantly as he pulled out a white envelope.
“So,” Chris went on, twirling the envelope in his hands, “Have an awesome week. Enjoy your time with Lisa…” he glanced off at the producers for a thumbs up to keep going, “And I hope to see you all at the next rose ceremony.”
He set the envelope on the table and they all stared, transfixed, as he left the room.
Garth, who was sitting closest to it, glanced up at the producers, seeking direction, but got none.
“Open it!” someone called.
After a second, Nick shoved past Garth and grabbed the envelope with a sneer. “I’ll do it.”
He pulled the card from the envelope slowly and Cas felt his hatred for this guy grow. He was looking around at everyone with a slight smirk touching the corners of his mouth, then he cleared his throat.
“Benny,” he started, and everyone turned to look at the lucky winner. “Why don’t you and me have a reel good time?”
Nick snorted and handed the card to Benny, barely bothering to look at him.
“Well, brother, you better go get ready,” Dean said, slapping him on the back.
Benny stood up, looking dazed, and wandered up to his room.
“Benny?” Michael said, voice dripping with scorn as soon as he left the room. “Like, seriously?”
“I know,” Nick agreed.
Everyone else sat in silence, looking uncomfortably at the cameras. Eventually, one of the guys whose name had completely slipped Cas’ mind stood up and followed Benny upstairs. After that, everyone dispersed, looking for something to do in this beautiful mansion with no Wi-Fi, no TV, and no connections to their friends.
Fun.
Dean went to the producers and started making a list of different foods he wanted ordered. Garth went and sat by the pool, dipping his feet in without even rolling up his jeans. And Cas? He went upstairs to find his book, the one form of entertainment allowed in.
He read all morning, already feeling like this was going to be the worst part. The waiting. The boredom. The constant cameras waiting for any sign of drama but mostly capturing the most mundane interactions that had ever happened on the planet.
Benny came downstairs and everyone briefly looked up and wished him luck before he was on his way.
And then they just waited, ate lunch--someone had ordered pizza. Ate dinner--still no sign of Benny. Of course not. These things took all day.
Some of the guys decided to stay up and wait to see if Benny got a rose or not. If they had one more person to worry about or not. But Cas was beat.
He moved towards the stairs and was stopped by a hand on his chest.
“So?”
He turned to see Anna staring at him, a clipboard in one hand and a headset dangling around her neck.
“What?” he asked.
“How’s it going?” a smile grew on her face.
“Good,” he said simply.
“Come on, Castiel,” she said, looking around. “You’re doing me a big favor, at least tell me you like it.”
“It’s going well. I’m glad I’m here,” he forced out, which seemed to satisfy her.
“Good,” she said, moving out of the way. He started up the stairs but stopped when she called after him, “And Castiel?”
“What?” he asked, keeping his voice neutral.
Her red hair glowed in the light of the mansion as her face softened. “Thanks for being here.”
“Of course,” he said quietly, before turning and heading up the stairs. “Of course,” he muttered again once she was out of earshot.
The next day came and Benny was still there, rose in hand, dazzling everyone with amazing stories of his night with Lisa. They’d gone to a real film studio and helped on set, then had a magical dinner in downtown LA.
Cas tried to find the part of himself that was jealous, that wanted that time with Lisa, but it wasn’t there yet. It would be… he was sure. Just not yet.
When the producers pulled him aside for an interview and asked him what getting on this groupdate would mean, he shrugged and said, “I don’t know.”
When they pressed for more information he fought the urge to roll his eyes before saying, “Time with Lisa matters to everyone right now. But a group date isn’t a one-on-one.”
Just then, the doorbell rang and they let him go meet the other guys in the living room, a few of them also trickling in from interviews. Garth went to get the card and stood at the front of the room, pulling everyone in with his magnetic yet ridiculous energy. Cas liked Garth. He was one of the only non-crazies in the house.
“Alright, who’s ready?” he asked playfully, greeted by a loud cheer. Once things had quieted down, he pulled the card out and started reading. “Castiel,” Cas smiled, high-fiving the guys around him with enthusiasm he didn’t really feel. “Gabe,” this should be fun, “Asa, Cole, Garth,” he pointed to himself with a broad grin, “Aaron, Michael, Dean,” Cas zoned out after that, staring fixedly into the faces of the guys around him.
All told, 14 guys were going on the date. 14 guys sharing time with Lisa. A recipe for the perfect night.
Cas refocused his attention on Garth, who had finished the list of names and was now flipping the card over to read the date aloud.
“Gentleman,” he started, and Cas wondered briefly if that was on the card or was Garth’s personal flair, “Let’s bare our souls. Love, Lisa.”
Confusion settled over the room and everyone around him chattered excitedly about what it could mean. What secrets they would have to tell. Cas glanced up at Anna who had a smile touching the corners of her mouth.
He’d seen enough seasons of this show to guess what it was. And he was not excited.
They all got ready upstairs, crowding into each other’s space, barely enough room for the cameras to invade their privacy. He hadn’t seen guys like this care this much about their appearance since he was in college. And even then… well, it wasn’t exactly guys like this
It took three limos to get them all there. Which seemed like an extravagant waste of money but hey, it looked good on camera and that was what counted.
No one really said anything on the ride. Made small talk, mostly. Not that there was much small talk left when they had no connection to the outside world. But there was something about the tiny interior of the limo, the cameras so close, that even at the producer’s leading questions the guys stayed quiet.
When they finally stepped out into the bright sunshine, Cas let out a sigh of relief.
Chuck was there waiting for them, and he gestured to a big building at the corner of the busy street they’d gotten off of and waved them forward, the whole time talking rapidly into the mic by his mouth.
All the guys started making their way over and Cas followed, glancing up briefly at the sign on the building. Squinting against the sun, he could make out the word “Nightclub” in big block letters.
Perfect. So it was what he thought.
He looked back toward the building and saw Lisa standing in front of the big double doors, a broad grin fixed to her face. Her smile was infectious, and he couldn’t help a small smile back as all the guys gathered around.
She exchanged a few words with a couple of them and then held her hands out to the building behind them.
“You guys excited?”
“Yeah!” Garth shouted from the back, throwing in a wolf whistle for good measure.
“Alright, alright,” Lisa laughed. “Anyone have a guess as to what we’re doing?”
Yep.
A hush fell over the group and Lisa laughed again. “Well, it’s gonna be super fun. And the best part is, it’s for charity.”
The group cheered and Cas cast a side-eye at the rest of the group, seeing only Michael not clapping. Dick.
“Anyway,” she said dramatically, her voice lowering as she turned toward the doors, “let’s find out what you got yourselves into.”
The room they followed her into was dark and smokey and blue and pink strobe lights lit up the whole space. Loud music was playing through the speakers and Cas had to lean forward to hear Lisa as she led them into the room and directed them into a line.
Then she turned toward a stage near the front and they all followed suit as the music stopped and the lights dimmed.
A new song started and the lights started up again, this time in sync with the song. As they all watched, a line of men in cowboy hats (and heeled boots too, figures) walked out to the front of the stage, matching the steps to the beat.
Yep, Cas thought bitterly. We’re gonna be baring it all.
The strippers on stage started their dance as the contestants started coming to life, realizing what was happening. Cas watched the stage for a minute--cowboys weren’t really his thing--then turned curiously to see the rest of the group’s reactions.
Most of them were looking incredulously at the stage, laughing nervously and cheering while their eyes opened to the fact that they were gonna be the ones up there soon enough.
But something in the back caught Cas’ eye and he peered closer, letting his eyes adjust to the lights and the smoke.
Dean was staring at the floor, color high in his cheeks, one hand raking through his hair as he shifted side-to-side. Cas glanced slowly from him up to the stage and a smirk slipped onto his face. Then Dean glanced up across the room, and for a split second, their eyes met.
Cas cleared his throat and looked away, trying to make it seem like his eyes had been slipping over the crowd of guys. Really saved that one.
Still. It was interesting. In an observationally interesting kind of way.
Cas filed the interaction away for future reference and turned his attention back to the stage, where the stri- dancers had finished their show to a huge cheer from the guys and Lisa.
Lisa walked out to the front of the group and gestured to a guy who’d come from some back room and was now standing next to her. His leather jacket was only done halfway up, showing his bare chest beneath. Cas nodded appreciatively as his eyes involuntarily moved up the guy’s body. This was more his style.
“Boys,” Lisa started, “I’d like you to meet my friend, Scott. He’s gonna be helping us out today.”
Scott nodded at her and turned to more fully face the guys. “Today, we’re going to be exposing you gentleman,” he paused briefly, glancing at the stage and smirking, “To the fine art of male exotic dancing.” Some of the braver guys in the group cheered again, but silence fell quickly. “Each of you will be performing on that stage later this afternoon. You’ll each have your own coach to help you, teach you the art.”
Lisa stepped forward and smiled warmly at them. “If you guys are a little nervous, that’s okay. This is about trust. It’s about showing me why you’re here, and showing me you can have a great time. I don’t expect you guys to be great at it,” the guys all chuckled here and she joined in, “But I expect you to have fun with it.”
“So,” Lisa’s smile widened and her eyes glinted, “Let’s get to some auditions!”
The guys cheered as Chuck stepped forward, clipboard in hand. “Alright,” he shouted over the crowd. “Everyone up on the stage. Get loose, we wanna see some good dancing up there. You have three minutes to show Lisa what you got, and then we’ll decide which routine you’ll be doing.”
The lights on the stage were bright, and Cas squinted up at them, resisting the urge to raise a hand. He could do this. He could do some stupid dance moves. He glanced over at Lisa, her head bent over a clipboard with Scott, a smile fixed to her face so natural she probably didn’t even know it was there. She was enjoying this. He could- he had to.
The audition song went by excruciatingly slowly, everyone busting out their cringey dance moves and making as much eye contact as possible with Lisa. Cas felt the awkwardness seeping through him and his heart rate kicked up. This was just the goddamn beginning part. He could fucking do this.
And then it stopped. Finally.
Lisa and Scott made a few more notes on the clipboard they were holding, glancing up once or twice at the guys and whispering without pointing.
Then Lisa walked forward with the clipboard in her hand. “Ready to find out how you’re stripping tonight?” she said playfully, winking at Michael who was standing in the front of the group.
The guys all clapped, clearly feeling an energy that Cas didn’t. His world was still spinning, the lights and smoke crowding into his brain and leaving little room for thought.
“There’ll be four different acts today,” Lisa went on. “Two groups of four--firemen and some policemen. One group of three, those guys will be robots. One duet for the cowboys. And,” she paused for effect, “One lucky gentleman will get to do a solo act all by himself as a bachelor!”
Another round of cheering and Lisa shushed them all by holding the clipboard high.
“Should I read the solo up to the groups of four, or the other way?” she asked seriously, looking over their heads at Chuck.
Before he could reply, though, Michael shouted, “Tell us who the solo guy is!”
This got a roar of approval from the guys so Lisa shrugged, glancing down at her clipboard as if to double check.
“The solo act… drumroll, please,” the guys all started hitting their hands on their knees and Cas focused on his breathing, looking down at the floor, away from the lights, the noise… “Garth!” Lisa announced triumphantly.
Everyone turned to look at him, slapping him on the back and grinning as he was ushered away but a coach.
“The duet…” everyone started the drumroll again without prompting, “goes to Dean and Castiel!”
Cas heard his name and looked up, trying to ignore the way everything was moving in slow motion around him. He nodded to the other guys mechanically and fixed a smile on his face, following the coach that took his arm and glancing back to see Dean walking behind him, his face flushed again.
Once they were out of the room, Cas’ mind started to clear a little more, and he looked around, blinking. He could do this. He’d be fine. Just a duet… at least he hadn’t gotten the solo act.
“Alright, my name’s Jay,” the coach said, slapping his hands together. He wasn’t bad looking, Cas mused softly, grounding himself more. “We have about an hour before you guys are supposed to get some sort of lunch, and then another two hours after that before call time. Which is plenty of time to learn about a two minute dance.”
Cas gulped and glanced at Dean, who had lost his flustered look and was standing with a cocky grin on his face.
“Let’s do this.”
The guy took them through the steps, and Cas’ mind settled, falling into the routine. The first half wasn’t that bad. Simple stuff, more about owning the move than skill, according to Jay.
But it was still fucking hard. Cas just wasn’t made to move like this. Not in front of a goddamn live audience. Even for charity.
Dean, on the other hand, was a natural. He made all of it look easy, like he’d been doing it his whole life. And he did the whole thing with a swagger in his step that Cas knew for a fact had to be fake… but it sure didn’t look it.
He kept turning to Cas and winking, giving him little pats on the back, hyping him up. And Cas didn’t want to admit it, but it did help… just a little bit.
After an hour, both Dean and Cas were whisked away by crewmembers for a few interview questions.
The questions were boring. How was he feeling? Some retroactive stuff like, what did he think when he walked in? How did Lisa look today?
Cas answered mechanically, trying to seem excited and not terrified out of his mind.
“And just one more,” Naomi said, tapping at her clipboard. “How’s working with Dean going?”
“Good,” Cas said immediately, the word ripped from his mouth. “Dean’s good at this stuff.”
Naomi just nodded distractedly and waved him away. “Right, right. Thanks, Castiel.”
Cas stood and went into the main stage area where a buffet had been set up. He made a beeline for some honey and toast and then left the room, not bothering to chat it up and see how the other guys were doing.
When he walked back into the rehearsal space, Dean was standing alone in the room, lifting up and examining the cowboy costumes layed out in the center.
Cas cleared his throat and Dean started, whipping around to face him. “Hello, Dean.” The costume dropped to the floor.
“Uh, hey, man.”
Cas took a bite of his toast and regarded him thoughtfully. “Cowboys?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Dean shrugged and looked down at the outfit. “Wild West was fu-” he glanced at the cameraman behind Cas, “Friggin’ awesome, dude. Don’t tell me you’ve never seen a Western?” he added with a lopsided grin.
“Just Brokeback Mountain,” Cas shot back.
Dean gulped and dropped his gaze. “I’ve never- I don’t know what that is.”
Before Cas could answer Ajay walked back in and pointed to the outfits laid out on the floor.
“Get changed. Bathroom’s down the hall to the right,” he sipped from the iced coffee in his hand and cocked his hip. “Then the real fun starts.”
In the bathroom, Cas slipped the thin material over his head, his chest starting to feel tight again. He made sure all the velcro was tight (he didn’t want it to slip before it was supposed to come off) and then walked out to the mirror where Dean stood waiting.
“Looking good, Cas,” Dean said, one eyebrow quirked up as his eyes tracked over Cas- no, over Cas’ clothes.
“What the hell are we doing?” Cas muttered, hoping it was quiet enough that the mic pack wouldn’t pick it up. There were no cameras in here, at least, thank God.
Dean frowned. “What?”
“I can’t- They’re making us strip, Dean,” he said pointedly, still keeping his voice a whisper. “In front of a bunch of strangers. In goddamn cowboy outfits. What the hell are we doing?”
Dean chuckled a little then stepped forward and reached up, straightening the bolo tie around Cas’ neck.
“We’re just having some fun. Remember why you’re here, man,” he added, before dropping a hand on Cas’ shoulder. He stayed there for a minute, their eyes meeting, and then he turned.
“C’mon, let’s go,” he tossed over his shoulder, pushing open the door.
“Let’s go,” Cas repeated, his heart beating rapidly in his chest. He couldn’t tell anymore if it was from nerves or-
He shook off the thought and followed Dean through the door. He was fine. They got this.
The rest of the dance was even easier than the first half. Cas was starting to think he wasn’t going to make a total fool of himself when Jay turned off the music and spread his hands wide.
“Right. So now, we just got to learn the stripping part of it.”
Cas gulped, his eyes going wide. Jay pointed out the various releases on their clothing, tips for getting it off easily, and then left them to practice, his trained eyes watching them carefully.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Dean got the hang of it in like two seconds. The shirt came off and he whipped it in the air like a lasso before looking at Cas and blushing. Cas just stared back, eyes wide.
Dean let the shirt fall to his side, his eyes still fixed on Cas, a curious expression on his face. And Cas, he couldn’t help but stare back.
Then, from behind them, Jay cleared his throat.
Cas let his gaze slip slowly away from Dean and looked to Jay. His eyes were drifting back and forth between Dean and Cas, but after a second, his eyes landed permanently on Cas. “We need you to learn this too, Castiel. We only have about an hour until you guys need to be in hair and makeup.”
“Makeup?” They both turned to look at Dean.
“Yeah,” Jay continued, “Just simple stuff, makes you look better on stage. Now, c’mon. Let’s finish up here.”
Eventually, Cas got it. It wasn’t that difficult, the rip-away pants and shirt came right off. Dean’s eyes burned into him the whole time, and he pretended he didn’t notice. Pretended he didn’t see his eyes jerking away as soon as Cas looked up at him.
He could do this. He was never going to make hundreds in tips but maybe it was enough for an audience of Bachelor superfans.
Hair and makeup didn’t take long, the producers pulled them away for another round of interviews, and then they were standing with the other guys backstage waiting for the audience to trickle in.
A few of them were fidgeting nervously, but most of them were peaking past the wall, looking at where Lisa sat in the front row.
They were going second. Right after Garth, who had pulled Naomi to the side and asked to go first. Still, Cas was glad they were getting it over with. Better to go now when his heart was still beating then in about twenty minutes when it had stopped completely.
By the time Garth was waltzing out onto the stage, a grin that could be described nicely as goofy and more accurately as idiotic plastered to his face, Cas could barely think straight.
A song Cas didn’t know started playing and Garth opened the buttons on his bachelor costume ever so slightly as he got into his routine. Next to him, Dean chuckled appreciatively and whispered, “Werewolves in London. Good choice.”
Cas’ could only nod, the song became foggy and distant and the lights danced around him again. He felt his breathing pick up again and he looked down, blurry eyes making out his shaking hands.
Shit.
He didn’t know how much time passed. Didn’t notice himself swaying. Didn’t notice the camera guy getting closer to make sure he had a good shot.
And then he was falling.
The jerk of arms stopping his fall brought him back to the world, everything coming back into focus. Dean gripped his shoulders tightly and stood him up, pulling him away from the cameras, hiding at the back of the group.
“Hey, man,” Dean said urgently, his hands tightening briefly before dropping entirely. “It’s okay.”
Cas gulped and silently cursed. Great. Panic attack on national TV and in front of De- Lisa--check. His Bachelorette Bucket List was going great.
“I’m fine, Dean.”
“No you’re not,” Dean shot back immediately.
“It’s-”
One of the P.A.'s Cas didn’t know tapped the back of his shoulder and he whirled around.
“You guys are on in about thirty you need to-”
“Give us a damn second,” Dean cut in. “Look at me.”
Cas turned back to face him and took a deep breath.
“You sure you’re good? We don’t have to do this.”
Cas inhaled deeply again before letting it out. “Yes. I’m- I’ll be okay.”
Dean met his eyes for what felt like another ten minutes before finally nodding, the concern slipping from his face. “Then let’s fucking do it.”
He ignored the disapproving stare on the P.A.‘s face at his word-choice and led the way through the crowd and up the stairs.
Cas followed him, eyes on Dean’s back, too shaken to look anywhere else.
The music started up and they took the stage, the crowd going wild, Lisa in the front with a soft smile, her hands crossed over her legs as she leaned forward.
He glanced at Dean just one more time, and then turned to face the crowd.
Let’s fucking do this.

Price kiss
Paring: Dean x reader
Prompt: In which you nurse Dean after he’s been injured on a fight. But on a fun way rather than a worried manner.
A/N: So this was initially inspired by the kiss scene near the end of Indiana Jones and the temple of doom, but after realising how weird the scene felt without the Indiana context I gave it a few twists. There’s still a kiss and it’s all fun banter, so if you’re in for a light hearted, fun read, you’ll enjoy. Much love!
Warnings: None, it’s on the bunker but there are no spoilers to any of the seasons, so ready away!
Tumblr media
You flipped another page of an old journal that belonged to a 1940’s men of letters and absently played around with one of the compasses that always laid on the beautiful map table underneath you.
A hard knock from the door startled you, causing you to drop the compass and grab the gun underneath the table pointing it straight towards it.
“Wow! Put that down!” said Dean, who stood near the railing, using it as support to stand.
“What happened? Though you were getting pizza,” you said when you noticed how beaten up he was.
“Angels,” he sighed “they wanted to know where Jack was, they didn’t take I don’t know for an answer.”
You pouted “poor Dean, someones gonna have to help you come down now,” you made fun of him.
He rolled his eyes and started walking downstairs, but he tripped and almost fell halfway through the staircase.
“Shit,” you whispered and ran up to help him “didn’t think it was that bad.”
“Shouldn’t have been, I was rather distracted when they found me.”
As you moved his arm over your shoulder to help him walk he complained, very loudly. “Goddamit, my ears Winchester!”
He frowned at you and while pointing his finger said “You’re the one that pulled on my dislocated arm!”
“Please, stop complaining like baby, we’ll fix it when I get you to the infirmary, besides you don’t even know if it’s dislocated.”
“Well it feels dislocated.” he bickered back.
As you both walked towards the bunkers infirmary, with Dean’s arm over your shoulders, you started feeling him getting heavier, he was passing out.
“Wow, Dean, Dean!” you spoke worriedly, turning your body towards his and lightly slapping him on the cheek “Dean, there’s absolutely no way I move you if you pass out. Sam and Cas are not here, you know it.”
He half nodded and you continued walking to the infirmary, once there you help him quickly sit on one of the beds and once in one he looked down, very tired, but still trying to keep himself up.
“All right Winchester! Let me see your arm,” you said as you took off his jacket, after it one of his plaid shirts and finally he was only left with a black short sleeve. You sighted and examined his arm. Did you know anything about medicine? No, not professionally at least, but if you’d learn how to inject with youtube, so would you learn how to fix his arm, hopefully.
As you examined his arm you played a video tutorial on how to fix a dislocated shoulder, which you learned was the right term, rather than dislocated arm.
“Wait a second? are you looking at a tutorial?”
You shrugged “If it doesn’t work I’ll take you to the hospital later, or Cas can fix it, he should be just hours away,”
“The man is saying it’s dangerous, shouldn’t be done unless incredibly necessary!” he nodded to your phone.
“Would you rather I call an ambulance, so they come, and you know see the bunker, what if thei’re demons? or other angels?”
He sighed “Fine, but be careful!” he warned.
“No need to worry, all right, lay down please.” He did as told. “I’m going to pull in the count of three… One… two…” and you pulled.
“Sone of Bitch!” He complained loudly “You said the count of three.”
“Doctors on TV always say it hurts less when unexpected,” you shrugged.
“On TV, (Y/N), this is real life,” he exclaimed.
“Well does it hurt still?”
“What?”
“Your arm, silly!”
He sat back down and rolled his shoulders “I think it’s a lot better now,” he admitted, you smirked.
“Yeah well, you’re welcome, anyway, why are you cut all over, you were wearing a jacket?”
“They dragged me on the floor a few meters,”
You handed him a few painkillers “here, this should help.”
“Thanks, Dr. (Y/N),” he smirked.
You rolled your eyes but bowed at him in a very exaggerated manner “We need to get those clean,” you nodded towards the harsh cuts on his face and arms.
“Well, let’s do it,” he sighed.
You gabbed a little cotton pad and dipped it on some alcohol, but stopped and let it back on the tray, “You’re gonna have to take that one off too,” you motioned towards his shirt.
He nodded and started taking it off but got stuck near the end and you helped him finish, he complained about it all the way. “Don’t be such a baby,” you mumbled.
He frowned, you took a good look at him. He was gorgeous, but that was not why you were here so you focused and looked for the injuries. There were bruises coloured red, purple and green, harsh cuts, and scraps all around his torso. You grabbed the little cotton with a small plier and started going over the little cuts first. He flinched every time the cotton would touch his skin. His jaw was clenched and he was tense.
As you went to one of the upper scraps on the right side of his chest he held his breath, you could see his chest lowering as you removed the little cotton from the cut. “I think that was the last one on your chest,” you smiled sympathetically.
“Awesome.”
“I need to clean your face cuts now,” he frowned at your words but nodded at you to go ahead. You drew a deep breath and started going over his face. You’d gotten closer to see what you were doing and held your face close to his. You started from the side, cleaned his eyebrow cut first and the harsh scrape on his jaw. You smiled “it’s done! torture’s over.”
“Thanks,” he mumbled as he grabbed his shirt to put on.
“Winchester don’t be an idiot. That’s dirty, I just cleaned all your injuries, you can’t put that again!” you told him and then mumbled at yourself “I might have as well just thrown a bottle of alcohol on top of you if you were going to render all my work useless that fast.”
He gave you an apologetic smile and left the shirt on the side. You turned over and handed him a white shirt from one of the drawers. You assumed it was for the men of letters that lived there before. As he moved around to put it on you saw him flinch from the pain.
“Hey! It’s all right I’ll help,” you said quickly grabbing the shirt and gently pulling it over his shoulders to fit it on him, “there you go, brand new,” you smiled giving him a look. And out of the blue gave him a light peck on the cheek.
“Auch,” he complained, “What the hell was that?”
“A price kiss?”
“On my bruised cheek? Clever!”
“Well, where else? You hurt all around,” you motioned his hole body.
He pointed at his forehead. You rolled your eyes but planted a soft kiss on top of it.
“Well then. Better?”
“Not yet I don’t think, maybe you should try here,” he pointed at the tip of his nose.
You frowned but kissed it anyway. He gave you a long look. With his big green eyes and then, the scoundrel he was, he pointed at his lips.
“Do you really believe you can trick me into kissing you like Indiana Jones?”
“He wasn’t tricking her!”
“Fine, coax me into kissing you like Indiana Jones?”
“But don’t I deserve it?” He pouted.
You rolled your eyes but after some considering gave him a fast kiss on the side of his mouth. You saw how his breath hitched, he wasn’t expecting it either, he’d always hit on you but only as playful banter, never seriously. Or so you both thought.
“Are you blushing?” You smirked.
“Shut up!”
“Ha!” You exclaimed, “who would’ve thought, Dean Winchester, playboy, hunter and world saver would blush with a little peck on the side of his lips!”
“I said shut up!” He stood up and grabbed your arm. Not quite menacing, but rather in a desperate way.
You looked at him defiantly “Or... What?”
He smirked and mumbled “I’ll make you,” as he pulled you into a kiss. It was soft and gentle and then you put your hand over his shoulder to bring him closer-
“Aaaaaaaauch,” he complained until you removed your hand.
“Sorry,” You mumbled.
“Meh... if you break it, you’re going to have to fix it again. And I’ll be looking forward to that price kiss.”
You laughed and smirked, “You’re an idiot, Dean Winchester....”

“Well thank you for dinner but we should probably be heading out.” Dean said towards the end of one of, if not the most, awkward dinner of his life.
“Dad what about dessert?”
“Claire, we need to get going. It’s a long drive back to Kansas.” Dean said, sighing internally because he knew getting Claire out the damn house was going to be hard.
“Dean, don't be ridiculous. You’ve been driving for most of the day.” Cas said. “We have the spare bedroom-”
“That’s my room!” Gabriel interrupted.
“It’s not your room Gabriel. It’s the guest room. You have your own house with your own bedroom.” Cas said, giving Gabriel the bitchiest look Dean had ever seen. That was saying a lot seeing as he’d grown up with Sam. “Dean, why don’t you and Claire stay here for the night? Claire can sleep in Jack’s room and you can sleep in the guest room.” Cas suggested. Claire and Jack grinned at each other and Dean just knew they'd stay up half the night whispering to each other. Or plotting. Most likely plotting.
No. Nope, Absolutely not going to happen in a million goddamn years.
“Cas, we can just grab a motel if I get tired.”
“Dad, I’m not staying in a motel if we can stay here.” Claire said stubbornly. “Plus Jack and I were already planning on making waffles in the morning!” Oh, Jesus Christ. These kids were going to be the death of Dean. And damn if both Claire and Jack weren’t giving him the puppy dog eyes.
“Fine. Fine. But we’re heading out in the morning Claire, I mean it.”
“After waffles.” Claire and Jack said in unison. When the hell did those two learn how to do that?
“Excellent, now that’s all sorted I’m going to head home as Winchester’s stolen my room. All the wine is gone anyways.” Gabriel asked, slapping his hand on his thighs as he got out of his seat
“See you in the morning Uncle Gabriel.” Claire said with a grin as Gabriel patted her on the head, ruffled Jack’s hair and gave both Dean and Cas pointed looks.
“Good night Gabriel.” Cas said, giving his brother a stern look Dean didn’t understand.
“Same to you bro. Good to see you Winchester, try not to keep this madam a stranger.” Gabriel said, nodding towards Claire.
“I’ll try.” Dean said, mainly to placate Gabriel. Gabriel gave them all a salute before heading out. “Nice to see Gabriel hasn’t changed at all.” Dean said once Gabriel had left.
“No, he’s still the same annoying ass he’s always been.” Cas said.
“I like him! He’s invited us to Thanksgiving this year.” Claire said. Yeah that’s not happening. Dean thought.
“I’m going to teach Claire my secret yam recipe.” Jack said cheerfully.
“Ah yes, Jack Novak’s secret yam recipe. Involving two whole bags of miniature marshmallows and a ruined casserole dish.” Cas said, shaking his head but giving Jack a fond look.
“Sounds about as successful as when Claire tried to make apple pie on for Father’s Day.”
“What did you set on fire that time?” Jack asked Claire. Claire could stick her tongue out all she wanted but there were still scorch marks in their kitchen.
“Yes well, Jack why don’t you and Claire clear up while Dean and I have a quick chat. After that, you can show Claire where she’s sleeping for the night. You two can watch a movie in your room.”
“Cool, how’d you feel about The Avengers?”
“Black Widow is a badass.” Claire said. “Rock, paper, scissors for who washes and who dries?” she then asked.
“Oh Jesus.” Dean muttered as Cas motioned for him to follow him. Instead of going into the warm looking living room, Cas took Dean upstairs and into a spacious guest room. The walls were painted a deep, honey colour that matched the wooden furniture perfectly. Unlike Dean’s guest room, which was really a junk room, it was immaculately clean. Dean was about to make a quip about the cleanliness of the room before he stopped. In the corner of the room was the very turntable he had brought Cas for the first Christmas they had been together. Without saying a word, Dean walked over and glanced at the records neatly stored in their storage box. Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac and even the rare Otis Reading record that Dean had found at a vinyl fair. Cas had kept all of them. For a fleeting moment, Dean wondered if the note he’d hidden in the Bob Dylan record was still there. A hastily scribbled note saying I wasn't born to lose you. Oh, the irony.
-
Cas watched with cautious eyes as Dean ran a hand over the box of records. Each one Dean had carefully picked out for Cas in another life. He had battled over getting rid of them for years. Gabriel had always said it was strange to keep hold of them but Cas could have never parted with them. When Jack was a toddler Cas had played all of them for him, smiling to himself at how Knocking On Heaven’s Door would always send Jack to sleep.
“I think we need to have a talk.” Cas said, trying to ease the tension that had enveloped the room.
“Um yeah.” Dean said with a cough as he straightened up, looking away from the records. “Cause apparently I’m cancelling my Thanksgiving plans with Sam to spend the day with my ex-brother-in-law, eating my body weight in mini marshmallows.” Dean said. “Cas...what are we going to do about this?”
“And by this you mean…”
“The kids. There’s no way Claire’s going to just go back to how it was before. Plus, Jack is an awesome kid. There’s no way I want to go back to how it was before. I mean, maybe Jack could stay with me during the summer?”
“And what? I get Claire during Easter? Christmas?” Cas asked, laughing at the absurdity of the situation. “We came up with this arrangement so the kids could live a normal life. What’s going to happen next, I have them for one year and you have them for the other? That won’t work.”
“No shit Cas but...did you see those two at dinner? They’ve only known each other for a few weeks but it’s clear they adore each other. Claire’s gonna be an even bigger pain in my ass after this. I don’t want to break my...our daughter’s heart when we separate them again and I’m sure you dont want that for Jack.”
“Of course I don’t! What do you honestly suggest then because not only did we come to this agreement to have the kids lead normal lives but it was also so we didn’t have to see each other.” Cas said because even though neither of them would say it, they both knew that seeing each other again would end in a huge fight and a lot of sex.
"Then why did you ask me to stay?" Dean asked. Good question Dean, very good question.
"Because it's late and you can't drive throughout the night when you've been driving all day." Cas said. Liar a small voice inside Cas said. As much as he annoys you, you still love him.
"Oh." Dean said in a small voice.
"Why? What do you expect me to say?"
"Nothing...forget it." Dean said. “You know, now that we’re here and I’ll probably never be here again. About that day you packed, why'd you do it? Why did you just hop on a train and leave?”
“Dean.” Cas groaned. “We were so young. We both had tempers, we said stupid things so I packed. Got on the train and you didn't come after me.”
“I wanted to but I didn’t think you’d want me to follow.” Dean said in a small voice. “Dammit Cas, you just had to send Jack to the exact same camp as Claire didn’t you? ”
“We haven’t spoken in twelve years, how on earth was I supposed to know where you were sending Claire for the summer? It might shock you to hear this but I can’t read your damn mind Dean. I didn’t send Jack there because a little voice in my head said ‘Oh Dean is sending Claire to this camp! Send Jack so he can meet the twin sister he never knew he had.’” Cas said.  "You are so infuriating, you know that right?”
"I'm infuriating?” Dean asked, looking highly offended. “What about the time you recorded over my Star Trek episode with a documentary on the life of Tomas Jefferson?"
"You have the whole series on DVD! Why did you need to record it off the SyFy channel?"
"You know why! It was the Trouble With Tribbles episode and that was on the DVD that Sam scratched when I let him borrow it!" Dean shot back.
"Well, you set fire to the patio furniture! Don't even say you didn't because Eileen told me it was you and Sam the next morning." Cas said.
"You scratched the Impala!"
"That wasn't me, it was Gabriel. I lied and said it was me because he was already on his last warning from when he spilt red wine on the couch."
"Yeah well, you did break my Captain Kirk mug."
"No Dean, the asinine way you stacked kitchen items broke your Captain Kirk mug."
"Yeah well, you...you…" Dean said and something inside Cas just broke. This man, this irritating and stubborn man had been the love of his life, his husband and the man he wanted to spend this rest of his life with. Twelve years hadn’t changed a damn thing.
"Oh for god sake Dean, shut up." Cas said and even though he knew this was the worst plan in the world, even worse than his non-identical twins switching places, Cas pulled Dean in close, their lips crashing against one another. Oh god, it was like going home after a long trip. Cas knew this, knew it better than breathing. Cas still loved Dean more than anyone else in the history of the universe.
"Cas this is the dumbest-" Dean tried to say between kisses. Frantic kisses that set Cas’ skin ablaze.
"Just shut up and take off your pants." Cas said before his brain could come up with a million reasons why this was a stupid idea.
“What?”
“Dean, shut up and take off your pants.” Cas said before crashing their lips together again in a kiss that was more like a battle for dominance than anything else.
“I can’t take off my pants if you keep kissing me.” Dean said as he pulled away and Cas just groaned because this man drove him so insane but all Cas wanted to do was kiss every inch of his body. "This is the worst idea ever."
"Worse than when you let Jo pierce your lip?" Cas asked. He could still the slight scar on Dean’s bottom lip.
"That was not as bad as the time you wanted to make your own honey."
"One bee flew in the house Dean, one."
"Bees don't belong in a house Cas, they belong in a beehive."
"Are you really trying to start an argument when we're about to have sex?" Cas asked. Thankfully Dean shook his head. "Good, now take off your clothes and get on the bed."
-
With The Avengers to mask the sound, Claire and Jack sat in Jack’s room as they called their Uncle Sam. After a few rings, he accepted the video call. Grinning at the pair of them with a warm smile.
"Hey kids...man it's weird seeing you two together. How's it going?" Sam asked.
"Awesome. We made chilli and got them to sit in the same room." Claire said.
Well, that's something Eileen signed. So what's the plan?
Plan?
Yeah, the plan. You two are definitely up to something because Claire's involved.
Why do you always think I'm up to something? Claire asked.
Intuition
"Past experience." Sam intoned. "Where’re your dads now?”
“Guest room we think, we heard shouting in there about ten minutes ago.”Jack said. “Something about tribbles.”
“Is he still on about that?” Sam groaned. Just out of view on the screen, Eileen signed something to Sam. He groaned and signed back.
“Hey! Winchester family rule, no covert signing.” Claire said. Sam looked back at her with a classic Uncle Sam Bitchy Face. “What did you say?”
“Ugh.” Sam said. “Fine, your aunt said that if they’re fighting there’s good chance they’ll end up having sex.”
“Ew! Gross!” Jack and Claire said at the same time. “Those are our dads.” Claire said, wrinkling her nose.
“Yeah? And how do you think you two were made?”
“With a turkey baster and a very patient surrogate.” Claire shot back. “Wait...if they do...you know...do gross stuff, does that mean they’ll get back together?”
Going from past experience, no. They’ll just fight and make noises that, according to your uncle, only dogs can hear.
“That’s really gross Aunt Eileen.” Jack said. “As far as a plan goes, we don’t really have one. Come on, we’re twelve. We need help and Uncle Gabriel has gone home.”
“Good, his plan would have been awful.” Sam said. “Look kids, I know damn well that Dean still loves Cas and judging from what you’ve told us, Cas probably still loves Dean. Just let them fight it out, turn whatever movie you’re watching way up and see how things are in the morning. I know these two idiots pretty well, you can’t force them into anything.”
“We can’t play the long game here Uncle Sam. Dad’s making us leave in the morning.”
“After waffles.”
“Yeah, after waffles I’ll be shoved in the car and grounded until graduate.” Claire said. The four of them sat in silence for a moment before Eileen’s face lit up.
Ok I have a plan but if it backfires then you do not get it from me. Claire, do you remember how to disable the battery on the Impala?
“Yeah, I remember...oh...no car means not having to leave.” Claire said with a grin. “Aunt Eileen, you are a genius and never let anyone tell you otherwise.”
“I want no part in this part of the plan.” Sam said hastily.
“Too late Uncle Sam, welcome to Team Parent Trap.” Jack said happily.

Supernatural fanfiction: Dean is baking and Cas is there.
Words: 1867

This is definitely one of the fluffiest things I've written.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dean is getting antsy. When he gets like this, it means he needs to go out. He used to go try and pick up some girl and spend the night doing that…but he hasn’t done that in some time. In a long time. There are...reasons for that, which Dean ignores. So, he ends up going into town and getting a pricey bottle of whiskey and ingredients for brownies. He considered making pie, but it’d be too complicated. Especially if he is planning on getting as drunk as he’s hoping to. Sam is on a job with a couple guys Dean had a nasty fight with a couple years back during his, uh…demon phase, so he thought it best to stay behind. It’s a bit hard to explain to a couple of hunters that you’re no longer a demon. Dean sets up everything he’ll need in the kitchen before opening the whiskey. He takes a nice long drink. He can feel the warmth run through him, and the aftertaste lingers just enough for him to want more. It’s awesome. He takes another drink. Dean kinda measures the things he puts into the mixing bowl, taking sips of his whiskey in between each item he adds. Once he finishes that, he turns on the mixer and starts mixing. The whisks easily plow through the chunky batter, blending it all perfectly. It’s fun to watch, and Dean grins. He mixes longer than is probably necessary. The whiskey has definitely taken effect. He sets the bowl down. “Dean.” Dean turns around. Cas is standing at the entrance of the kitchen. Dean smiles. He’s glad Cas is here. Maybe he’ll even be able to spend some time with the angel. Probably not, though. Cas doesn’t make it a habit to stay. “Cas!” Dean greets. “What are you doing?” the angel asks and walks closer. He stops so he’s standing beside Dean. Dean wishes they were further apart. He’s been falling into this bad habit of touching Cas when he gets close. Nothing weird. Just touching his arm or grabbing his shoulder. Dean knows he needs to chill, or it will lead to him wanting more. And he can’t do more. Not with Cas. They’re best friends. He can save his desires for hot chicks and cute waitresses. Like what you were planning tonight? Before you changed your mind. Because all you can think about lately is him. Dean shoves that thought down and answers Cas, “Making brownies.” Dean turns to the mixer and takes one of the whisks off. “Here. Try some.” He hands the whisk to Cas. Cas grabs it and frowns. “This isn’t brownies.” Dean rolls his eyes. He finds Cas’ naivety endearing most of the time. Cute even. But Dean doesn’t call other men cute. “It’s the batter,” Dean explains. He’s not really sure if that clarifies anything for the angel, but he doesn’t really care. He takes off the second whisk. “It still tastes good.” “Aren’t uncooked eggs harmful to humans?” Cas says while squinting at the egg carton and broken egg shells on the counter. “Yup,” Dean answers then licks his whisk. It’s not bad. Sweet and chocolatey. He’s also a little tipsy, so he doesn’t really care if it’s not perfect. He looks up at Cas. Cas licks the whisk tentatively, his tongue darting across it. He stares thoughtfully before taking another taste. This time he licks the whisk slower. Dean bites his lip. Mistake. Why did he hand that Cas? And why did he stare that whole time? It’s not like Cas can even taste it. Not really. Dean holds his hand out for Cas to return the whisk. Cas hands it back. Then Dean notices Cas got some of the batter on his face. “Cas,” Dean says while pointing at his cheek. “You got some, uh, there.” Cas attempts to wipe it away, but misses it completely. “No, uh, more to the left,” Dean says. Cas misses it again. Then Dean realizes he was talking about his left and not Cas’. Dean sighs and sets the whisks down. “Let me.” He steps closer to Cas and gently wipes the batter from his cheek. Cas’ skin is soft, and Dean wants to feel more. But he swallows and pushes that thought aside. He should’ve gone to a hookup tonight. Dean is about to step back, but is surprised to see Cas staring at him. It isn’t a normal stare. It’s intense. It’s as
if Cas is studying every inch of Dean’s face. Dean feels himself blush and quickly turns away. He places the whisks in the sink and takes a few more sips (okay, more like gulps) from the whiskey. Cas is staring at him again. “You want some?” Dean holds up the bottle. “No. But thank you.” Dean shrugs and takes another sip. The oven beeps. “What does that mean?” Cas asks. “It means the oven is warm enough to put the brownies in.” Dean walks over to the mixing bowl, grabs the ladle next to it, and walks over to the oven. Cas curiously follows. “I set this pan up for the brownies,” Dean further explains before concentrating on scooping the mix and placing it into the pan. The alcohol is messing with his motor skills a bit. He turns back to get more mix, but Cas is standing right there. Dean’s breath catches in his throat. They’re really close. They’re so close it would take Dean barely any effort at all to lean forward and... Dean snaps his eyes up from staring at Cas’ lips. Shit, shit, shit. Maybe Cas didn’t notice. Dean clears his throat. “I need more mix.” He holds up the ladle and pointedly looks at the bowl behind Cas. Cas steps back to give Dean more room. Dean continues to scoop the rest of the mix onto the pan. His thoughts drift back to a few moments ago. Had Dean just missed his chance with Cas? ...No. Cas doesn’t feel the same way. Dean likes to think he can read Cas pretty well, and he’d definitely notice if the angel felt...things towards him. Dean ends that train of thought. He’s finished putting the mix into the pan. He grips the pan with his left hand and opens the oven with his right. As he slips the pan into the oven, his thumb gets stuck under it, but he doesn’t realize it until after he places the pan down, scrapes his thumb across the oven grill, and closes the oven. He feels the pain then. Fucking alcohol. He inspects his thumb. It’s not bad. “Dean.” Cas is holding out his hand. Dean slowly moves his injured hand in Cas’ direction. Cas gently grabs Dean’s hand with both of his. Cas’ hands are warm and soft. Dean glances up at his face while he heals him. Dean wants to hold hands for real.
God, he’s so pathetic. Cas looks up at him, and Dean realizes Cas finished healing him and brings his hand closer to look at it. It’s all better. “Dean...” Cas steps closer, and Dean tries to give Cas more room by stepping backwards but hits the counter instead. “Y-yeah?” Dammit. Dean didn’t mean to sound so uncertain, but they are close again. His heart his pounding, and the whiskey is making him feel warm and fuzzy. Dean just wants to give in to what he’s feeling. But he can’t. He never has, and he won’t let tonight be the night he slips up. Cas tentatively reaches for one of Dean’s hands and holds it. He brings their hands up and interlaces their fingers. Cas feels just as warm and soft as before. Dean barely manages to find his voice to ask, “What are you doing?” “I don’t know,” Cas replies softly. “It just feels...right.” Dean can’t argue with that, and he’s barely managed to process they’re holding hands when Cas steps even closer. Cas stares at Dean intensely again. “Is this okay?” Cas asks. Dean can barely breathe. He’s wanted this so badly for so long, he can’t believe it’s actually happening. Dean stares at their hands. He must be dreaming. “This is great,” Dean finally answers. Dean looks back at Cas. Cas’ eyes flick down Dean’s body. Arousal strikes through Dean, and he tightens his grip on Cas’ hand. Dean realizes Cas probably didn’t mean for him to see that. Cas’ immediately looks back up at Dean and blushes. Damn. It’s cute. And now Dean can’t help it. He leans in and softly kisses Cas. It’s just the smallest press of his lips against Cas’, and Dean’s starting to pull away when Cas grabs the front of his shirt and brings him back. Dean grabs the back of Cas’ neck and presses himself further into the angel. The kiss is desperate at first. It’s like they’re both trying to unleash every suppressed emotion and every unsaid word that has passed between them for years. Cas pushes Dean into the counter, and it digs into the back of Dean’s legs. It hurts, and Dean pulls back from Cas momentarily. “The counter,” Dean says quietly. In one swift movement, Cas switches their positions and pulls Dean back to him. “Wait, Cas.” Cas freezes, his hand still gripping the front of Dean’s shirt. “Is something wrong?” “Maybe we should slow down,” Dean says breathlessly. “...You want to slow down?” The disappointment in Cas’ voice feels like a slap in the face. Dean is surprised that it seems like Cas doesn’t want to stop. “God, no.” Dean takes this chance to look over Cas. His hair is a mess, and his lips are pink and swollen. Dean’s heart races at the thought that he was able to make Cas like this. “But I think that’s why we should.” “I thought you enjoyed sex.” The disappointment lingers in Cas’ voice, and he releases Dean’s shirt. Dean blushes at the mention of the word “sex”. It’s not so much as the thought of sex itself, but the thought of having it with Cas. And Cas apparently wanting it. With Dean. Right now. “I do but—” Dean grabs Cas’ hand, “—you mean more to me than just that. I want to do things right with you.” Dean looks into Cas’ eyes. He needs Cas to understand how much he means to him. Dean doesn’t want to fuck this up. He can’t fuck this up. “That’s supposed to make me want you less?” Dean smiles and looks down at their hands. “I don’t want to just have sex with you.” His eyes fly back to Cas’. “Don’t get me wrong, I do, believe me, but...I want to date you.” The phrase feels so foreign. Dean never imagined dating someone. Let alone the one person he’s wanted for so long. “...I think I understand, Dean,” Cas says. He leans in and kisses Dean gently. “I want to date you, too.” Dean blushes then feels embarrassed about blushing, which only makes it worse. He can’t believe he feels so happy over this. The oven beeps again, and the moment is over. Dean gets the brownies out, but burns himself on purpose this time. Cas doesn’t seem to mind.

Through A Mothers Eyes (Part 3)
Dean Winchester x Reader
Wanna start from the beginning? Here is the masterlist!
Warnings: crack, cursing, idiots to lovers trope (that good shit)
Summary: When Mary meets Deans closest and best friend, she cant help but see the chemistry between them. . .but she might be the only one as well.
A/n: Its back! It took me awhile to motivate myself to write the next chapter, but I did it! I hope you enjoy and feedback is greatly appreciated! (gif made by rainbow-motors)
Tumblr media
If Mary thought living in a bunker with her two sons and you was chaotic. . . She was definitely not prepared at all for what game night meant. Not. One. Bit.
It was like a fucking war zone.
Halfway through Jenga she almost expected you and Dean to slap on some war paint, she had never seen such competitive people before in her life.
And then you brought out Uno.
“Fuckin demolish him Cas!” You yelled, hands planted firmly on the table as you watched the angel and hunter slap down colored cards furiously. You, Sam, and Mary had all lost already, resulting in you being Cas’s new hype man.
“Y/N, you’re supposed to be on my side!”
“There are no sides in Uno, Dean!”
“Then why the hell are you cheering on Cas?!” Dean slapped down another card. The two were almost running out of cards to play that it hit the point where Sam had to start shuffling the played cards so they could continue. “As your best friend let me just say; I find that insulting.”
“False. Cas is actually my best friend.” You responded bluntly, raising your hand to connect it with the angels in a loud high five.
Dean paused to narrow his eyes in your direction. “. . . Anyways, as your best friend- I’m telling you, you can’t pick sides.”
“Oh and where pray tell did you get that idea from?”
“The best friend rule book.”
You laughed. “Oh yeah, let’s whip that one out and crack it open, I’d love to read it!” You paused, turning to his mother with a soft smile. “I’m so sorry you have to witness this. He’s just a pain in my ass.”
Resting her chin in her hand, Mary returned the smile, still mildly amused at what was playing out in front of her. “I can tell. But I’m pretty sure he’s a pain in everyone’s butt.”
Deans mouth popped open in shock as his lips momentarily failed at trying to form words. “Now you’re taking her side too?!”
“I mean-“ you paused, flicking your hair over your shoulder. “I am fucking amazing. Plus, your mom just knows who the cooler person is out of the two of us-“
“Oh you little-“ dean growled, rolling up his sleeves after slapping his cards down on the table.
“Is this really necessary?” Cas muttered, eyes still on his cards and clearly trying to plan his next move.
“Oh you fuckin know it.”
“Maybe your mom should just adopt me. I could replace you! I am way more fun!” You laughed, backing up as Dean slowly rose from his seat. “Plus, you’re moms way more cool than you.” You joked, eyes lighting up when you looked at Dean and saw him moving towards you. You maneuvered around the table, the two of you moving back and forth as you tried to dodge Dean, trying to keep the table between you.
“You’re such an asshole!”
“You know it baby.” Shooting him a wink you ducked behind Sam's large frame, using him as a shield.
“Oh no- don’t go bringing me into this.” Sam tried, shaking his head as you gripped his shoulders.
“Just hold him off for me will ya?”
“And what do I get in return?”
“. . . the next time its your turn for a supply run, ill do it.”
A pause. “Deal.”
“Sam!”
The younger Winchester shrugged as he held out his arms, stopping Dean from reaching you. “What? Y/Ns more negotiable that you are.”
You let out a cackle before standing on your top toes to press a firm kiss to Sams cheek. “Thanks Samantha!”
You took off down the hallway before Dean could even attempt to move Sam. The younger Winchester continuing to block his brother as he tried to move past him. After a moment Dean gave up, falling back into his seat. “Alright, fine. I admit defeat. . .you can put your arms down..”
“If I do are you gonna go kill her?”
“. . . Maybe.”
“Dean!” Mary hissed, shaking her head at her sons antics.
“What? She’s a pain in the ass!”
Mary only shook her head again. That was until Cas spoke up again. “Am I supposed to say Uno?”
*. *. *. *. *. *.
The rest of the night became much calmer after that, you and Dean were back to your usual shenanigans and held up in the Dean cave watching some old western, Sam had headed off to bed because apparently you and Dean “drain his energy” Or whatever. Cas was for some reason still up cataloging some of the bunkers lore. As for mother Winchester, she found herself seated at the kitchen table, reading a book you had lent her a little over a week ago.
Mary almost didn’t see you walk in at first, with most of the lights still off it was like darkened hallway spit you out. Hands in the pockets of your sweatpants you quietly trudged into the room, pausing at the sight of Mary.
“You liking the book?”
Mary looked up, a small smile gracing her lips at the sight of you. “Yes I am, thank you for lending it to me.”
“No problem. Honestly it was just sitting on my desk collecting dust. I read it and never picked it up again” You admitted with a shrug. Walking past her, you filled your empty glass at the sink before moving back and lowering yourself into the seat across from her. “I’m sorry about earlier. Deans and Is energy can be a little overwhelming at times.”
“You don’t need to apologize. If anything I should be thanking you.” She closed her book, folding her arms over the surface of the table.
“What for?”
Mary let out a sigh. “Even if I haven’t been back for very long, it’s easy to see the effect you have on Dean. He’s happier when you're around, you get him to laugh more than anyone else here.”
“I think you're just seeing his slow decent into insanity.” You chuckled, looking down at your folded hands. “I’m told I have that effect on people.”
“Oh I don’t think that’s true.”
You opened your mouth to answer but stopped when you looked past Mary, eyebrow instantly raising. “What?”
Mary turned in her seat, her eyes finding her oldest son standing in the darkened doorway, your blue blanket wrapped around him. Dean narrowed his eyes at you. “You left me.”
“. . . I’m sorry?”
He stepped down into the kitchen, eyes still glazed over with a slight sleepiness. “It was rude.”
“You were asleep! I didn’t want to wake you up!” You threw your hands in the air, unable to believe the man sinking down into the vacant seat next to you. He yawned, his head falling against your shoulder as he closed his eyes.
“But by your didn’t have to leave me by myself. I woke up and you were gone.”
You rolled your eyes, hand coming up to pat the side of his head. “You poor baby, whatever shall you do now?”
“Mmm haven’t gotten that far yet.”
“Did you really just come in here to fall asleep on me again? Just go to bed Dean.”
“Don’t wanna.” He sighed, wrapping your blanket tighter around him.
“I swear you like a five year old.”
“I am not.”
“You totally are.” You paused. “But seriously Dean, go to bed. I ain’t dragging you down the hallway to your room when you fall asleep on me again.” You gave him another pat before standing up put your now empty glass in the sink, having practically chugged it moments before.
Groaning once more, Dean slowly blinked his eyes open and turned his attention to his mother. “What are you still doing up? I thought you went to bed.”
“Couldn’t sleep, thought I’d stay up and read instead. Y/N lent me a book to read.”
Turning his head to look between you and his mom he shook it in disbelief. “God, I live with a bunch of nerds.”
“Dean you can’t say anything about that. You're like the biggest nerd out of all of us.”
“. . . Shut up. Plus, you're no better. If anything I'm this way because of you.”
“Sure, Jan. You keep telling yourself that.”
Dean paused when he looked back over to his mom, seeing a soft smile on her features. “What?”
“Just the two of you-“
“What about the two of us?” He questioned, sliding the blanket off of his shoulders as he stood up before folding it and handing it back to its rightful owner.
“I just- I think you two would make a cute couple.”
There was a pause as the two of you looked at each other.
“Me? . . .And her?” Dean threw a thumb over his shoulder in your direction.
“Me and Dean?”
Another pause. And then a light laugh was bubbling up from both of your throats- before quickly turning into full bellied laughter. Dean had his hands planted on his knees and your head was thrown back as you grabbed at you gut. The two of you quickly dissolving into fits of hysteria. It went on for a good minute before starting to fizzle out.
Ahaha! Whew-“ Dean chuckled, wiping the tears from his eyes as he stood up properly again. “That- that was good.”
“Oh god-“ you bent over, hands still on your sides. “My gut hurts- I haven’t laughed like that in awhile.” You panted.
“Yeah, thank you for that mom.” Dean patted his mother’s shoulder as he passed. “That just made my entire day.”
Once you had mostly regained your composure, you took a deep breath. “Okay, well as much fun as that was- I’m gonna go to bed. Goodnight Mary, Dean.” Giving gone last nod you stepped into the hallway along with Dean, the two of you connecting your palms in a loud high five before walking off in separate directions.
Meanwhile Mary sat silently at the table, the only thing running through her mind being what the fuck just happened?

Happy Birthday Dean Winchester!!!
I wanted to write a little something and this ended up spiraling into something longer than I planned.  (2,231 words) (Also please forgive me for any spelling errors. It’s after 3am) Enjoy!~
/////
For Dean, the weeks and months following Chuck’s defeat went by in a dizzying, unrecognizable blur. Despite Sam and Eileen’s best efforts to take care of Dean, he spent the majority of his time buried deep in the bunker’s archive. A lot of the time Jack is with him.
There was an ache in his chest that feared what stupid things he might have done by now if the kid wasn’t right there. Helping him. Talking to him. Actually getting to bond with him without Chuck’s interference. It was the one good thing in this fucked up situation right now.
So far their search for anything about the Empty was a disaster. There was virtually nothing. More and more often Jack would apologize. With his new position as God, yes, he could make a doorway into the Empty. That much they did know for a fact. But could he put them to sleep? Could he kill them? What would be the consequences of that?
The only other thing that they knew for certain was that the Empty could claw their way into Heaven and tear it all down. That was the only thing that was keeping Jack from snapping his fingers and restoring Cas right then and there.
It was tearing them both apart, but regardless, they continued their search.
Today, Dean opened his eyes and rolled onto his back. It was his birthday. Most years he spent it like any other normal day, but this one….after the Mrs. Butters incident…Sam and him had decided they should be throwing real celebrations. It was one thing when they were living out of motel rooms and the impala. It was completely understandable. But now they have a permanent home. So why not?
He knew now why not…..there was no point in celebrating a man that’s only half here.
Dean closed his eyes and willed himself to sleep the day away. He didn’t realize that he had fallen back asleep until he was startled awake by a pounding on his bedroom door. He shot up to a sitting position in bed, chest pounding and eyes wide with fear. It was a moment before he realized that he was in his room and not….
“Hey Dean? You up yet?”
His heart rate was still slowing, but he recognized the voice. Sam.
“I’m awake now. What’d you want?”
“Lunch is ready. I figured you’d wanna eat by now.”
“Fine. Be up soon.”
When Dean was dressed and ready as he would ever be, he opened his bedroom door. He stood there blinking in confusion for several moments. There were balloons tied to the doors of every room down the hallway.
His stomach twisted uncomfortably as he followed the balloons into the kitchen where the party decorations looked like they threw up. There was a happy birthday banner over the kitchen doorway and balloons….so many goddamn balloons everywhere.
“Surprise!” Jack popped up out of his chair and crossed the kitchen to hug him. “Sam let me decorate for your birthday. He told me I had to contain it to one room though.”
Jack took a step back with a look of concern. “Is that okay?”
“What about the hallway?”
Jack’s eyebrows furrowed. “A hallway by definition isn’t a room.”
That set Dean off in a fit of belly deep laughter. He slapped a reassuring hand onto Jack’s shoulder. “You did awesome kid.”
Jack’s mouth pulled into a beaming smile. He went back to where he was sitting, and Sam came into the kitchen.
“Good. I didn’t think you were ever getting up.”
“Yeah. Yeah. Good to see your face too, Sammy.”
Sam rolled his eyes and started pulling plates out. Dean went and sat by Jack.
“So what’s for lunch? I’m not seeing anything.”
Sam brought the plates over. “Well, you slept through the pancakes Jack helped me make this morning. Eileen should be here any minute with lunch.”
Dean shot Jack a look. “Sorry kid.”
“It’s okay. They were really good.”
“What’s Eileen bringing?” Dean turned his attention to Sam, but before he could answer Eileen came walking through the door.
“I hope everyone’s hungry.” She placed a stack of three white boxes on the table.
The familiar bakery smell hit him instantly. He pointed at the boxes. “Is that?”
Eileen grinned and crossed her arms. “Sam told me you liked pie.”
“Thank you, you majestic, wonderful being.” He turned his gaze to Sam. “You better marry her.”
That got Eileen laughing while Sam ran a hand through his hair, embarrassed.
Dean grinned and made eye contact with Eileen. “I’m so sorry, I know you can do so much better than Sam too.”
She laughed again, and then her mouth curled into a teasing smile. “I know, Dean. I know.”
“OKAY.” Sam clapped his hands together. “Can we move on from the embarrassing Sam portion of today?”
They eventually did. For a long time the three of them sat in the kitchen laughing, telling stories, and eating way too much pie. At one point Sam handed a big gift bag to Dean.
“It’s…from Jack and I.” Sam sounded unsure.
“I hope you like it,” Jack added.
Dean opened it to find several wrapped in tissue paper objects. Soon enough he found out that they were all various framed pictures. Silently, he spread them all out over the table so he could stare at them all.
There were pictures going back a decade. Easily. There were so many smiles and glares and candid shots. Fuck they were all so young looking.
Charlie in her Queen of Moondoor costume. Mom with a bowl of popcorn. Kevin and Sam asleep surrounded by piles of books. Claire on her 18th birthday with the ugly stuffed cat doll. Rowena moments before she hexed the camera. Jack looking amazed at the giant multi-scoop ice cream cone Dean bought him against Sam’s wishes. Kevin and Linda at Garth’s safe-houseboat. Dean, Sam, and Bobby at one of the cabins fishing. The hectic attempt at a family photo from Jody’s. Garth and his family. And Cas…..there were so many just of Cas or ones with him present or ones of just the two of them.
Sam coughed awkwardly. “I know you’ve been saying for a couple years now that you wanted to start printing some of the pictures we’ve been dumping onto one of the old laptops. So I thought….”
“Thank you, Sammy.” He couldn’t tear his eyes away from the pictures. Especially the candid he’d never seen before. It was of him and Cas leaning against the side of the impala, completely lost in their own bubble of conversation. Dean felt like there was a cinder block dropped into his stomach. “You did good.”
And he meant it. Still, it hurt to remember everyone he lost.
“Oh, I think you missed one,” Jack said poking at the bag.
He was right, Dean realized when he reached a hand in and pulled out a smaller wrapped frame.
Sam laughed. “I forgot about that one.”
Dean opened it and burst into uncontrollable laughter. It was a picture from his mark of cain days of him and Crowley in matching cowboy hats. As much as he didn’t want to remember those days, he still couldn’t bring himself to delete the picture. “I miss that dumb son of a bitch.”
“Hey!” Sam chimed in. “That’s insulting to Rowena.”
That had Dean laughing again. “Well, she can take a number kicking my ass. You know the moment Cas sees this he’s gonna use it and me as his personal dartboard.”
The words slipped out before he could even process it. Sam’s smile faded. Dean’s laughter turned into crying. No one said anything while Dean fought to compose himself. He was grateful for that.
When Dean’s face was dry and he dared lift his head up, Jack asked him about the people in the photos.  And that’s how they spent the rest of the afternoon. It was hard to imagine his life without Jack being present somewhere so he was happy to indulge the technically toddler in what the people in the pictures were like. All the stories Dean could pull from his memory. It hurt initially, but after a while he felt lighter.
Later that day Dean was taking a break in his room when Sam peeked in the ajar door. “What’d you need, Sam?”
“I-uh…” He stepped into the room. A neatly wrapped in green box with a card on top was in his hands. “I have one last thing to give you.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “Not that I don’t appreciate it, but isn’t another present going overboard? What gives?”
“It’s not from me.”
“Oh. Hand it here then.” Excited, Dean sat on the edge of his bed and held his hands out.
Sam stepped forward, but he didn’t hand the box over. “It’s from Cas.”
Dean’s hands fell down, and Sam was happy he waited. “What’s in the box?”
Sam placed it on the bed next to Dean. He shrugged. “I don’t know. He asked me quite a while ago to hang onto it.” Sam rubbed the back of his neck. “I figure he thought you’d be least likely to find it if it was in my room.”
Dean cracked a small smile at that. His chest felt like it split open just to ache again. He knew why Cas asked Sam to hold onto it. “Thanks Sammy.”
Sam left the room, closing the door behind him. It took a while before Dean could muster up the courage to open the card.
His hands shook as he pulled the folded over pieces of paper out of the envelope. Turns out instead of a generic store bought card, Cas wrote him a letter. It was a bittersweet sight. Despite how devastated he normally felt whenever he thought about Cas, he was good seeing his handwriting. In his hands was actually a new message from Cas. A message from Cas to him!
Happy Birthday Dean,
If you’re reading this then that means I failed. I wanted to burn this letter to ashes, but clearly I’m not there to do that. I’m so sorry, truly. I’m not sure what could have happened to bring us here, but I need to confess something important. I know you said no more deals when Jack died, but I still made a deal with the Empty anyways.
When I went to Heaven to bring Jack’s soul back to his body things didn’t go as planned. The Empty was furious Jack’s human half sent him to Heaven. It tore through Heaven like it was tissue paper. I did what I had to for Jack, and for Heaven. My life for his.
I don’t regret it. But the Empty did promise not to claim me until I gave myself permission to be truly happy. I’m still trying to puzzle out exactly what that could be. My family on Earth: Sam, Jack, and you - make me happy each and every day. I need you to remember that.
Please be safe and live a happy life. You are so loved by your friends and family. They need you for the next several decades. I mean it Dean. (I may have been curing you of liver and heart disease every year on your birthday. Well fixing to the best of my abilities the damage you keep causing on those poor organs.)
I hope you enjoy the present I picked out. Quite honestly, I got it because it made me laugh.
I miss you.
Castiel
Dean felt like a tangled mess of emotions. He needed to remember to breathe. Minutes later he carefully tore open the green wrapping paper. Curiosity poked at him. With Cas’ odd sense of humor, it could have been anything in the box.
Under the wrapping paper was a generic cardboard box, but inside were a handful of new cassette tapes. Dean fell over to be laying on his side. Laughing happily for quite a while, he studied each and every tape. They were all cassettes of modern music, specifically the pop artists Cas loved so much. The ones Dean used to tease Cas about while they’d be out on long drives.
He immediately knew which memory Cas was thinking of when he planned this. Dean remembered they were in the impala and Cas wasn’t in the mood for any of Dean’s old tapes. He teased that anything that came out after cassette tapes wasn’t real music. And only real music got to play in the impala.
Closing his eyes, Dean could picture the smug look Cas would be wearing right now. Tears started bubbling free from his eyelids. God he missed Cas with every ounce of his being.
A while later Dean got up and left his room, taking the tapes with him. He went for a long drive circling the neighboring towns while he worked through several of the tapes. If he relaxed enough, he could almost imagine Cas sitting in the front seat next to him, mumbling along to the lyrics of the songs he liked most.
Dean vowed that this time next year things would be different. He was owed a birthday wish and this was it: next year he’d be somewhere warm with his toes buried in the sand, and he’d have Sam, Eileen, Jack, and Cas with him.

A/N: this takes place in the season 11 finale before Dean has to kill Amara
#12: please don’t do this
#70: I’m not ready to say goodbye
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I’m not ready to say goodbye, not yet, anyway. However, now that I thought about it as we stood in the middle of the cemetery in Greenville, Illinois, I realized I probably never would be.
They said the only way this could end – for her to end – was a bomb. Not a state-of-the-art war bomb like the ones they showed in the movies. No, this was different. A soul bomb, it was they called it.
Rowena said she could do it, but there was a catch. There’s always a damn catch I couldn’t help but to think to myself. She said it had to be Dean, that he had to be the one to get close enough to Amara to obliterate her to holy hell before she could take the rest of the world down with her. Of course, Dean agreed, not seeing much of any other options. We were out of time.
I watched from a distance where Sam and Dean were standing in front of Mary’s headstone, their backs to us. Cas, Chuck, Rowena and Crowley watched on, too. I turned away from the scene, leaning my back against the passenger side of the Impala, wrapping my arms over my chest, holding them close to my body.
The Mark of Cain, the thing that led up to all of this mess, was supposed to have been my burden. I was going to be the one to bear the mark, but Dean had beaten me to the punchline. I should be the one saying my goodbyes. I should be the one preparing myself to die, not Dean.
The sound of heavy footfalls coming toward the car made me turn around. Dean stopped in front of Chuck who was being held up by Rowena, even the weight of his own body was too much for him to hold up on his own now.
“You cool with this?” Dean asked.
“No,” Chuck said honestly. “Even after everything she’s done, Amara’s still my sister. She’s my family and I can’t- I don’t want to see her dead, but…I understand.” Dean nodded, pain in his eyes.
“Dean,” Cas said from behind him, making Dean turn. Cas instantly pulled him in for a hug.
“Okay, alright, alright,” Dean said, patting his back as he gently pulled away, a sad smile on his face.
“I could go with you,” Cas offered, searching every inch of Dean’s face as if he were trying to memorize it.
“No, no, I gotta do this alone,” he said, immediately shaking his head before lowering his voice, but even from where I stood, I could still hear him. “Listen, if – when – this works, Sam and Y/N…they’re gonna be a mess, so look out for them, okay? Make sure they don’t do anything stupid.”
Cas nodded and Dean gathered himself before turning to the group, clapping his hands together, “Okay, look, I want a big funeral. I’m talking epic. Open bar, choir, Sabbath cover band, and Gary Busey reading the eulogy.” He nodded at the idea, his façade beginning to fall slightly as he looked around. “And for my ashes…I like it here. Yeah...you know as far as eternal resting places go.”
There was a beat of silence before he stepped toward Sam, the two of them obviously trying to be stronger for the other, “Come on, you know the drill. No chick flick moments. Come on.”
Tears were brimming in Sam’s eyes as he shook his head, “Yeah, you love chick flicks.”
“You’re right, I do, c’mere,” he said, before pulling Sam into him, their arms wrapped tightly around each other. When they pulled away, Sam sniffled, slapping Dean’s shoulder. When he turned around his eyes caught mine. I squeezed my upper arm, willing the tears not to spill over.
He clenched his jaw as he came toward me before stopping, “You’ll watch over her, won’t you?”
I cinched my eyebrows in confusion, “What?”
Dean smiled softly, looking down at Baby before pulling the keys from his pocket, looking at them in his open hand, “You remember what I taught you about taking care of her, right?”
I forced away the instant memories that flooded my brain: the hours upon hours we’d spend in the garage together, working under Baby’s hood. I clenched my jaw again, feeling the white hot pain in my throat, not daring to even look at him because I knew that if I did, I wouldn’t be able to hold myself together for much longer.
I knew this was it. His final deed on Earth before actually saving it. I nodded, taking the keys in my hand, “Yeah, I remember.”
“Good,” he said before suddenly pulling me into his chest, wrapping his arms around my shoulders. I gripped the back of his jacket, burying my face in its material. The smell of gunpowder, aftershave and his cologne filling my nose for what I feared would be the last time.
When he pulled away, I looked up at him in one last desperate attempt to save him from what he was about to do, “Please…please don’t do this.”
He clenched his jaw, lightly patting my cheek. I knew what that meant: this had to be done
“Okay,” Dean said, turning back toward Chuck. “Let’s do this.”
With a snap of Chuck’s fingers, Dean vanished. I instantly felt a hole open up in my chest at his absence. I gripped the keys tightly in my pocket, letting my eyes gently close, finally letting a tear fall down my face.

He’s looking up at Cas, upside-down from where he’s hanging off of Cas’ bed, a black controler clasped loosely in his hands. They’ve been hanging out and playing video games in Cas’ childhood bedroom all day, trying to use the days they have left before they inevitably have to start the three-hour drive back to college together. They are roommates now, and still best friends, just like when they were seven years old and missing a few teeth. Cas is also, unfortunately, still as head over heels in love with Dean now, at the age of 23, as he was when Dean was still too small to sit in the Impala without a booster seat, still only sitting and watching as his uncle Bobby tinkered on cars, still loud and laughing unabashedly, still void of worries. Cas stumbles a little over the question. “Um — I. No, never. You?”

They meet and get drunk and talk about life, most of the time. Sometimes, though, like today, they play drinking games. Today, it’s Never Have I Ever. It’s only a quarter past midnight, all of them are way past tipsy already, when Charlie giggles to herself and slurs: “Never ’ve I ever — ever slapped my partner’s ass durin’ sex.” A mixture of laughter and snorts wanders through their rows, and everyone raises their glasses. Everyone, even Garth — everyone except Cas. Everyone drinks, except Cas, and Dean just stares. He can feel the vodka dribbling down his chin while he drinks, and oggles his best friend some more. As soon as he swallowed and coughed his way through the burning liquor, he blurts: “Dude, seriously, never?” And that's how it begins.

“What am I exactly supposed to be looking at, again?”
You tilted your head to the side and stared at the sheets of paper Kevin handed over to you to read over. He called you and the boys into the library this morning after claiming he had a breakthrough worth sharing. The kid had been working on translating the tablet for days now with almost no breaks at all. He was overly eager with what he claimed was some kind of monumental breakthrough. It was the first update he had in weeks. All of his supposed hard work came in the stack of papers you flipped through to discover it was nothing you were expecting. Pages upon pages filled with what you guessed were doodles and illegible chicken scratch Kevin called his handwriting. This was the progress he had to offer. It made much sense to all of you as the words etched into the stone.
You managed to read a few of Kevin’s notes that offered no clarity to the next step in his work, causing you to worry he didn’t make any real progress at all The boys weren’t happy either at the small ounce of hope Kevin had instilled you with his news. You flipped through all the notes to see if there might have been something useful, but it was all the same. Nonsense. You raised your brow in curiosity as to how this was supposed to help all of you. The demon tablet took months to translate just the trials, unfortunately you didn't have that luxury of time. You needed to undo what Metatron did quickly as possible.
"That's your 'big news',” Sam sounded the least bit enthusiastic at the promise turned into a let down at seeing the prophet's notes that were most likely going to turn out to be useless. “is that you translated the tablet into doodles?"
"It's cuneiform." Kevin tried to explain the long and tedious process of how he managed to get to this point. "I hit a wall translating the tablet into english. But I found an ancient codex linking the angel script to proto-elamite cuneiform, and I was able to translate the tablet and the footnotes into elamite, which is—"
“Doodles.” Dean finished the younger man’s sentence.
“It’s extinct.” Kevin added.
“Well,” You let out a quiet sigh of annoyance from his news that all sounded to be turning out the same way. Bad and pointless to even still be talking about this. You glanced back to the doodles in some kind of attempt to make sense of it. You had an ear for languages. But even you found yourself drawing a blank for what the hell this could even mean. “Can you read it?”
“No one can.” He said. “Scholars have tried for centuries.”
“So it’s a dead end?” You took a wild guess at what this meant for you. You threw the papers to the table in defeat at the continuous walls you kept hitting. It felt with each turn you took to try and get yourself out of this angel mess only turned out the same, time spent wasted and no progress to show for your effort. Kevin wasn’t defeated as you were. He thought there might be a way to keep going with this angle.
“Not quite.” Kevin said. You crossed your arms over your chest to hear what the kid had to say, hoping this conversation turned out to be worth your while. "Now, most proto-elamite is abstract, but I was able to decipher one phrase from Metatron's footnotes. 'Falling angels.'"
You and the boys exchanged a glance to one another at the set of keywords that had started this entire mess in the first place. Maybe you had been looking at this the wrong way. You thought the answer to your problems would be hidden somewhere in the tablet. Words God spoke himself might not have held the information you needed. You wondered if it was hidden somewhere between the lines. Somewhere most would simply ignore.
"Okay, so, the footnotes to Metatron's spell?" Sam asked, wondering if that’s what Kevin figured.
The kid merely shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe.”
You let out a quiet sigh from the little information you had to go on. Sam wasn't about to give up just yet. He decided to take the only lead you had going for all of you. The Men of Letters had enough resources to help. "Well, maybe if we can decipher the footnotes, then we can reverse the spell..." Sam thought out loud a possible plan all of you could follow. He made his way to one of the shelves, pulling out some hardcover books for you to read.
“Punt those winged dicks back to heaven.” Dean said. He slapped his hand against the table in agreement with his brother’s genius idea. Little did he realize what was in store for him. “Where do we start?”
"Research." Sam said, saying his older brother's least favorite word when it came to hunts and solving supernatural problems. He tossed one of the bound books to the table, landing with a rather heavy thud. Dean’s expression of hopefulness slowly fell when he realized there was no getting out of this. "We comb through the library, see if we can find anything else on elamite."
The older Winchester grabbed the book up from the table and read the title out loud. His excitement for the tedious research ahead darkened at the struggle ahead. “Zimmerman's Encyclopedia of Extinct Languages Volume One: Adai to Atakapa.” He frowned. “How many volumes are there?”
“Twenty-four.” You said. You smiled in delight at the sight of his drooping jaw and the failure for any words to come out. You placed a hand under the table and lightly patted his thigh in reassurance. “Don’t worry, babe. We have all of them.”
“Awesome.” Dean muttered. You were going to be no help for him to try and sneak his way out of this one. His brother only scoffed and turned his attention back down at his book when Dean subtly pleaded to have some mercy thrown his way. However it seemed there was someone looking out for him. Dean was saved from a tedious afternoon filled with research when his phone went off. “There is a God.”
You rolled your eyes in slight annoyance at how joyous he sounded at being able to slip out from the responsibility of research. You returned your attention back to the first page of the encyclopedia as Dean tended to the phone call. He wasn’t sure who was trying to get in contact with him. It was always a guessing game when a random number flashed across his screen. Dean answered the call after the second ring and was greeted by a familiar voice he hadn’t heard in weeks, not since the awkward departure that sent Cas back on the road alone. The older Winchester wondered if the guy was calling up to reassure him that everything was okay on his end. Or he was in some kind of trouble.
"I may have a case for you. Four missing in Rexford, Idaho. Presumed dead, but no bodies have been released to loved ones." Turned out it was neither of them. To say it was a surprise upon hearing Cas' voice on the other end discussing a possible hunt was a shocker. Dean jumped up from his seat as the man went on without giving even a simple greeting. "And there were reports of a strange substance at the scenes."
"Oh, well, hello to you too, Cas." Dean whispered to the man over the phone, making sure to keep his voice low enough not to disturb everyone who had been working diligently. He knew the moment you heard Cas' name drop into the conversation you would be all over him in trying to ask questions about the whereabouts of the man and how he was doing. So far you had your nose buried in the book and engrossed with whatever you were reading about to care about who he was talking to. “How are you?”
“I...am busy.” Cas answered.
“All right.” Dean mumbled. He wasn’t sure what to expect from the guy. Cas’ people skills were never the sharpest, despite him being down here on earth for a handful of years and interacting with people. Trying to have a simple conversation with him always ended up with words lost in translation. Dean decided not to try and make small talk and go straight to the reason why Cas called in the first place. “So, how do you want to do this? You want to meet up at the latest scene? You want me to pick you up? What?”
Dean heard something that sounded to be liquid splashing over the other line, making him momentarily confused as to what the hell Cas was up to. "Um. I've got my hands full. I just—um..." Cas was quickly learning that he wasn't able to multitask. "...thought you would want to know about the case."
"Hey, are you sure everything's—" Dean tried to be a good friend and ask the man about his transition to normal life, but he wasn't able to finish his question when he was cut off by a dial tone. He rolled his eyes and ended the call. “Okay.”
You and the boys were no strangers to taking on a case with little to nothing to go on. From what Dean heard, this seemed like something all of you might be interested looking into. It might turn out to be nothing in the end. Or it could very well be a monster. All Dean knew for sure he couldn't ignore it without at least checking it out by himself. He forgot the last time he was able to go on a hunt by himself. But he didn’t see the need for you and Sam to tag along when there was so much reading to be done. He wasn’t sure if it was even a case after all. Whatever it did end up turning out to be, Dean was going to run with it. It wasn’t everyday he got a perfect excuse to get himself out of doing research. Before Dean went on his way to Idaho, he knew all of this was going to raise a few questions.
“So, he said nothing about where he is or what he’s been doing?”
Sam was rightfully confused at the shift in plans after Dean silently excused himself from research only to come back with an overnight bag all packed up and the strap hanging off his shoulder. The younger Winchester was given a brief summary of the conversation Dean had with Cas and nothing much else to go on. He was more caught up with the fact that Cas had given no proper details about his whereabouts and wellbeing. Only about some bogus case Sam personally felt would be better suited in another hunter’s hands.
“In case you forgot, he’s not exactly Chatty Cathy.” Dean said, walking a few steps up the staircase before stopping to face his brother.
“And you’re not even gonna see him when you’re in Idaho?” Sam kept on with the questions to try and understand the man’s eagerness to go through with the trip.
“Well, like I said,” Dean repeated the same excuse he gave you when you found him packing up a bag after you noticed his disappearance from the library. “as long as he’s catnip for angels, he’s keeping his distance.”
“So, then what’s the point, Dean?” Sam called out to his brother as he continued to the top of the staircase and towards the front entrance. “I mean, it’s barely even a case.”
“That’s why I’m just gonna go have a little look-see, and we’re not gonna waste a whole lot of manpower on a big pile of nada.” Dean explained to the two men from top the balcony overlooking the lower part of the bunker. If there was one thing Dean was good at, it was always sneaking his way out of wasting a day on reading some dusty old book.
“In other words, a perfect excuse to bail out on research.” Kevin said, calling out the man on his behavior.
“You got me.” Dean felt the need to sarcastically reply.
Sam and Kevin were left to tend back to the tedious amount of research that was waiting for them back in the library. All though they were short a pair of eyes, not all hope was lost just yet. They thought there was still one more person who could help keep the reading somewhat manageable. Or so they thought.
Dean was the first one to notice you had decided yourself that you weren't going to be part taking in research either. He found himself slowing his walking pace when he discovered your lower half sticking out from the backseat of the Impala. While it was always a lovely sight he enjoyed on almost every occasion, this one made a groan of frustration build up in the back of his throat. He should've known you were going to weasel your way into his plans of taking this hunt. You always did. You got yourself out and into a standing position, one hand rested on the car door and the other on your hip. The smile on your lips made him wonder if even holding a conversation as to how you managed to beat him out here was even worth it.
"You honestly thought you were going to leave without me?" You asked him. Dean tried to open his mouth to give you an answer, you cut him off before he could even breathe. "No way. When's the last time you took a hunt by yourself?"
Dean's face scrunched up at your question, "You don't think I can handle one on my own?"
"I didn't say that. Who says you’re the only one who wants to skip out on research? I really didn't want to spend my time reading eight books on a dead language that might help us translate that stupid tablet." You admitted to him. "Besides, we haven't had any alone time in forever. We can make it a little getaway from Sammy and Kevin."
"I thought you didn't like mixing our dating life with hunts." Dean said. You smiled at the little rule you implemented years ago when you both started going out to make a balance. You walked closer to him so you could wrap your arms around his neck to be near. You looked off into the distance and pretended to think for a second.
“If it is even a case. Might be just something for the cops." You said. “And even if it turns out to be one, we can always add a few more extra days. Tell Sam it's going longer than expected."
Dean pretended himself to think about the plan you hatched up. It didn't take much thought to agree with what you had in mind. He didn't see the harm in letting you tag along, it wasn't like he was going to be around Cas to worry about any winged dicks to make things more complicated. He answered your proposal by leaning down for a kiss before hitting the road. He felt your lips stretch into a smile against his own when he agreed. The man knew deep down you would have come along no matter what he said. This way if trouble got in the way he would be able to keep an eye on you.
+ + +
By the next morning you and Dean made it to Idaho with your first stop at the most recent crime scene that was still swarmed with police. You managed to blend in with the uniformed officers from the federal clothes you changed into before making your way here. The both of you flashed a pair of smiles and fake badges at the officer in charge in exchange for some information. While Dean chatted up the sheriff, you took the chance to snoop around the property of the most recent victim.
It wasn't hard to see his living conditions weren't the best. The rundown house he called a home was in desperate need of repairs, not to mention the grass littered with junk from broken down cars to objects rusting from the elements. Despite the neglect to make the place appear tighty, there wasn’t much anything out of the ordinary from what you could tell. All except for for the strange coating on the front windows that overlooked the property. The bubblegum pink clashed with the clutter and ramshackle home. It felt out of place.
“So, four missing?” You asked the sheriff, making sure to watch your step on the wet grass as you approached the police tape securing off the perimeter.
"Four dead." The sheriff corrected you. "Just got confirmation."
“And any common threads you can think of?” Dean wondered.
You bent over the tape and into the crime scene so you could examine the surroundings a bit better. So far what you could tell was the amount of useless junk lying around the lawn that had been neglected from good mowing for a while. Overgrown grass and weeds helped blend in the things he had kept lying around. It was an eyesore for this neighborhood.
"Well, Joe in there had the suicide hotline on speed dial. The gal before him was a shut-in. Head enough antidepressants in her medicine cabinet to stock a pharmacy." The sheriff gave you a quick rundown. You crossed your arms over your chest and listened to the theory he had, thinking it might help you in the long run later. “The first victims—a married couple out of Sugar City. Pretty much a walking billboard for no-fault divorce.”
“Were they all basket cases?” You asked.
“If you asked me to make a list of this county’s saddest sacks, these four would’ve been right on top.” The sheriff said, giving her own personal opinion.
“All right, so four unhappy people, one of them definitely suicidal.” You summarized all of the information you knew so far at the moment. You passed a quick glance over at Dean when you gave a small shrug from what you had. It wasn't much, but you had a feeling there was more to the story. "But you've ruled out suicide, right?"
The sheriff grabbed a few pairs of what appeared to be rubber gloves from another officer and handed them over to you. You furrowed your brows slightly in confusion when you realized there were also protective booties for your shoes to help from tracking in any dirt into the crime scene. "You're gonna want to put these on."
You and Dean complied with the request and slipped on the protective equipment before entering the home. The sheriff was the first one inside, opening up the door to possibly one of the strangest crime scenes you had seen in a while. You quickly got an answer to why the windows were tinted bubblegum pink, because the entire place was coated in it. You didn’t know what the hell happened that caused the place to make it seem like a can of paint exploded in here. You highly doubt Joe thought some color in his life would help with his depression.
You made sure to watch your step as you entered the home after Dean followed the sheriff, taken back by the strange sight himself. You spotted a forensic investigator crouched down on the ground taking a swab of the pink substance. Right away you noticed a foul smell that caused you to press your wrist against your nose in some kind of attempt to help muffle the odor. It reeked of decomposition, a smell you were unfortunately quite familiar with.
“This look like suicide to you?” The sheriff's question caused you to rethink your theory. You glanced around the place to try and figure out what the substance was. If the police hadn't identified it yet, you wondered if something supernatural might be to blame for this after all. This was starting to feel more like a case after all. Dean took a wild guess when he asked if the substance was blood. “If the tests come back the same as the others, it’s the same as everything. Blood, skin, hair, nails, internal organs, even clothing fibers—like these poor souls got a run through the world’s finest wood-chipper.”
“What about witnesses?” You asked.
“Same as the rest. Neighbors reported some kind of pink flash. By the time we got here, all that was left was…” The sheriff took a sweep of the room and the remains of Joe, something he couldn’t quite explain. “this.”
You and Dean shared a similar expression with one another at what you were learning. The deaths were odd enough for you to keep digging more into what might be the cause of this. People just don't naturally explode without a proper reason why. It seemed Cas found you a legitimate case. What you wondered next was if he was willing to lend in a helping hand.
+ + +
After checking the crime scene and going through the usual suspects, you and Dean were left back at square one to who or what might be to blame for these deaths around town. The both of you decided to find a motel for the remainder of your stay and switch out of your fed clothes for more comfortable ones. You had a tedious amount of research and what you needed the most was a caffeine pick me up for the long night ahead of you.
You decided to make a quick call to Sam to see how his own progress was going with the amount of reading he and Kevin were forced to do on their own after you abandoned them. You felt a little guilty for leaving them high and dry, but it seemed like they were functioning just fine on their own. And it seemed your suspicions had turned out to be right when Sam gave you an update on their progress.
"Yeah, we're almost through the texts over here." Sam said. “We got nothing.”
“Have you tried Professor Morrison?” Dean suggested.
“Yeah, he’s unreachable. He took a sabbatical to live amongst the trobrianders of Papua New Guinea.” Sam explained yet another useless dead end. You furrowed your brow slightly when you overheard what the professor had been doing in his free time. “Needless to say, we’re pretty burnt out.”
“Well, there’s one guy there who is nothing if not well-rested.” You felt the need to remind the younger man of the extra housemate who had been rotting in your dungeon. Sam scoffed at the thought of Crowley helping out. "I'm just saying. We're not keeping him chained up for the one-liners."
“It’s worth a shot, I gess.” Sam said.
"Just be careful, all right?" Dean warned his little brother. "Don't fall for any of his 'quid pro quo' crap."
“Noted. So, what about you guys?” Sam asked, curious as to how progress was going with the hunt you decided to take. “How’s Cas’ lead panning out?”
“Four victims suddenly exploded. We tried EMF. We looked for hex bags, sulfur—nothing.” You ran down the list of the things you had searched for back at the crime scene only to come up empty with no possible leads of where to go next.
“Spontaneous combustion?” Sam took a wild guess. “Maybe the Thule?”
“No, no, no. We already ruled them out.” Dean said. “The bodies were vaporized. They weren’t burned.”
“That sounds like a real case.” Sam was starting to sound worried from how things were starting to shift into something more serious. "Guys, I should be there."
“No, Sammy. That’s not necessary. I’ve got this under control.” You reassured the younger man. "I'll make sure Dean doesn't get into too much trouble. And bug Crowley, see if he knows anything. We'll call you if we hit a dead end."
When Dean said he was going out for a quick stop, you happily tagged along. It seemed Dean had been doing his own research as well. You found yourself making an extra stop after getting some coffee to discover he wanted to check up on Cas to make sure he was doing all right. He tracked the man’s call to a local gas station.
You ended the call shortly after exchanging a quick goodbye with Sam, letting him see if the king of hell might be of use for once. You slipped your phone into your pocket for safekeeping before setting your sights on the reason why Dean wanted to head out besides for coffee. He had been doing his own research while you were getting settled into your motel. It was to track down Cas after their shared phone call the day before. You were happy to know the guy was doing all right. But confused as to as to why he was working the register of the local gas-in-sip.
This entire situation with Cas and his departure from the bunker was strange that left you bothered. Dean held the same excuse when you asked him days after Cas decided to hit the road again. The man had a target on his back with his fellow brothers and sisters. He thought the bunker wouldn't be safe enough to keep you all from the danger. While you were happy to see that Cas was safe and out of harm's way at the moment, you still didn't understand why. Someone was eventually going to find him trying to blend in with the rest of humanity.
"I don't know if I should laugh or cry." You mumbled under your breath.
"It's kind of funny, if you ask me." Dean said.
“Of course you would.” You said, rolling your eyes. “I still don’t get why he ditched us.”
Dean shrugged his shoulders at the answers he couldn’t give to you. He took a sip of his coffee and watched as his friend waited on another customer like he’d been doing this for years. “I’m surprised there’s no one complaining.”
You furrowed your brow in confusion at what you overheard the man mutter into the paper cup. “What?”
"Nothing." Dean replied a little too quickly. He noticed there wasn't an angel taking control and popping out to warn him about letting you go near Cas. So far it was just you staring at him, curious as to what he was hinting around. "Let's go. I wanna play the lotto. Suddenly I'm feeling lucky."
You knew it was Dean's flimsy excuse to go inside the gas-in-sip and ambush your friend at work. You finished the last of your coffee and properly disposed of it in the nearby trash can before following behind the man into the store. You had a few questions you wanted to ask Cas. You weren’t going to leave him alone until he answered them. And to make sure he was truly safe on his own.

Always the same
Tumblr media
Request: Can you please make dean x reader, when they meet for the first time but ready is shy and awkward, but her friend is loveable. So, dean, sam, Cas, and jack pay attention to her friend rather than her. She feels sad and disappointed, but she is used to it. She didn’t cry, just smiling in pain. The reader likes dean. Dean is a gentleman to her but maybe he treated girls the same. So, she is the kind of person that walks alone and behind while they are laughing in together.
Pairing: Dean x Reader, Sam Winchester, Jack Kline, Castiel, OFC Michelle, Charlie Bradbury
Warnings: angst, shy reader, heartbreak, shitty friend, comforting, fluff, language, a hint of kidnapping
This is the requested sequel to: Overlooked
Charlie is alive for this story.
When Dean and you entered his motel room he got a pie out of the bag, along with two forks, bacon and pancakes.
He’s watching you sit on a chair, offering you a fork as you hesitantly take it. “Thanks.” Your voice barely above a whisper you dare not to look at the tall hunter.
You know he pities you, there is this look people give you recognizing your distress. Your brother gave you this look, and Michelle does the same.
“Why are you shy around me too? Did I do something wrong?” Dean tries to start a conversation, but you don’t know how to answer his question.
“We barely know each other. How could you have done something wrong?” Sniffling you poke the food with the fork, not hungry any longer. “Not your fault I’m plain and boring. I know that even Michelle has enough of me sometimes.”
“Hey, we can’t all be like her or me. I’m more the ‘here I’m guy’, Y/N. If you are shy, that’s okay. But don’t hide from me too, we could…” Dean can’t end his speech as someone knocks at his door, disturbing the longest conversation you had with a man in a long time.
Dean is rushing toward the door, poking his head out to see someone making his face contort in anger.
“Huh, Michelle? What are you doing here? I thought you wanted to check the location of the last murder with Castiel while Sammy and Jack go to the library.” Slightly annoyed Dean glares at Michelle, who chuckles.
“I thought we could use the time wiser. I know you and I have some chemistry, Dean. I could sleep in your room; don’t think I want to spend more time with Y/N. She’s annoying me since Tulsa with her babbling about lore or something…” Michelle smirks, sliding her fingers over Dean’s chest.
Tears well up your eyes and you believe Dean wanted to make fun of you, just like your friend. They planned this to make you feel even more miserable.
Grabbing your keys, you rush toward the door to duck under Dean’s arms, turning around you blink a few tears away.
“You know, only as I’m shy you didn’t have to make fun of me, Dean. I got you are not interested in someone as plain as me but that’s just cruel…” Sobbing you run toward your car as Dean runs after you, calling your name.
“Y/N stop, that wasn’t a plan or something. I didn’t know Michelle would come to my room. I asked Castiel to take her with him to have some time with you.” Dean tries to stop you, but you slap his hand away, shaking your head.
“I’m shy, not dumb, Winchester. I know when someone tries to fool me. The whole evening you didn’t even look at me and suddenly you want to know me better. Shove your lies up to your ass. I knew I’m better off without you or Michelle. She only wanted to use my knowledge and strength.” Opening your door you toss your purse and jacket in.
“Y/N, please believe me…” Dean tries once again but you get into your car, slamming the door shut.
“Oh, you should know Michelle likes to do it without a condom and had STD last month. You better be careful before you celebrate you pranked me.” Starting your engine, you drive away without looking back, not seeing Dean’s pained expression.
“Son of a bitch, Michelle! You win the prize for the worst timing like ever.” Beyond angry Dean kicks a stone before he stalks toward Michelle.
“We still can have fun, Dean. Y/N will calm and come back. She didn’t pack her stuff.” Michelle chuckles, trying to touch Dean once again.
“She already packed her stuff and wanted to leave before I invited her. Jesus, Sam was right this morning. He said you didn’t invite Y/N, even after Jack told you to do so, on purpose. You even forgot to tell her about the diner.”
Slamming the door of his room shut Dean shakes his head, inhaling sharply as Michelle tries to win him over with dirty talk.
“I met a lot of shitty people in my life I can tell, but you beat them for sure. Get your hands off me right now. I want Y/N’s number.” Dean is holding out his hand to check Michelle’s phone for your number before he tosses it at her.
“When I’m back you better are gone, ‘cause neither me nor my brother like having bitches around.” Storming toward his car Dean deals your number but he ends up at your mailbox.
—-
“Find her, Sammy. She was so hurt…” Pacing around the room Dean looks at the laptop, hating his brother can’t find you fast enough.
“Relax, Dean. I already found her phone. We will drive to the motel and you can talk to her. Y/N is a nice girl, smart too. She managed to translate this old Greek oath for me in no time. She wasted her whole night while Michelle was partying, Dean. I hate to say it but…” Dean huffs giving Sam his best bitch face.
“I know, bitch. You told me so, Sammy. I just wanted to give Michelle a fair chance and offer her and Y/N a room in the bunker. I didn’t know she’s a bitch trying to get into my pants and leaving her so-called friend behind.” Dean is grabbing his key, rushing out of the room to drive toward your position.
“Wait for us, dude. We need to apologize too, Dean. Cas, Jack and I messed up too.” Sam is running after his brother, as Castiel and Jack watch Dean cursing in front of his car.
—-
“Where is she, Sammy?” Looking around the empty motel room Dean curses seeing your phone lie abandoned onto the nightstand. “Do you think she forgot her phone?” Sam shakes his head, sighing.
“I guess she knew Michelle would try to get her ‘research slave’ back. I got no clue how to find her, Dean. I’m sorry.” Sam looks around the room, not knowing how to help his brother he sits onto a chair.
“We can’t give up, Sammy. She’s a nice girl, tough hunter and now she lost her partner. What if anything happens to her?” Dean checks the nightstand, kneels to look under the bed, even looks behind the mirror to find any clue of your whereabouts.
“Care to explain why you look under the carpet?” Sam watches his brother, cocking a brow, as Dean robs toward the second nightstand, almost squealing as he finds a piece of paper.
“Got something!” Holding the piece of paper in front of Sam’s face, a triumphally smirk on his lips Dean points at the flyer. “Look, a Dungeons & Dragons festival not far away. I bet Y/N will be there.” Dean is proud of himself, grinning as Sam rolls his eyes.
“Dude, maybe someone else dropped this flyer. It could lie there for weeks or even months.” While Sam tries to reason with Dean his brother gives him a glare.
“Read the date, bitch. It says the festival starts today at six. I don’t think the flyer lies here for months. Get up and help me find my girl.” Dean is running out of the room, the flyer still in his hands he ignores Sam started to laugh.
“I think you got it bad, Dean.” Pointing at the flyer Dean doesn’t answer, only whistles for his brother and the angels to follow him.
“Shut up and get into the car, Sammy. I got to find my shy girl and tell her I didn’t try to trick her.”
—-
“Awesome!” The redhead you met months ago squeals, hugging you tightly as you followed her invitation. “I knew you would make it Y/N. Where is your friend?” Charlie is craning her neck, not seeing Michelle.
“We parted ways, Charlie. You know…” Sighing you toss your bag onto the prepared bed. “You were right with Michelle, Charlie. She was a bitch.”
“What? Seriously, tell me everything, girl. Let’s rip her apart and talk low about her. She was nagging about us talking about Dungeons & Dragons the whole time. I told you she’s only keeping you around for doing her research, lazy cow.” Charlie sits onto the bed, letting you warm up with her.
“I liked a guy and told her so. We met him during a hunt. He was…” Sniffling you blink a few tears away.
“Let’s say I liked him a lot and Michelle used to opportunity to make fun of me. I thought he is nice, tries to get to know me but I was wrong.” Wiping away a few tears you keep on telling Charlie what happened, and she turns pale hearing Dean’s name leaving your lips.
“Hey…” Slinging her arm around your shoulder Charlie sighs. “We are going to rock this festival as the devilish queens of Moondoor, Babe. How about you change into your costume and I check on you later?”
Walking out of your tent Charlie dials Dean’s number. Ready to kill her friend for hurting you.
—-
“Where is she? Charlie…” Looking around the field Dean tries to find you, but Charlie slaps his cheek harshly, shaking her head.
“Did you hurt that poor girl to get into that chicks’ pants? Michelle is a bitch first grade, Dean. I knew the moment I met her she is up to no good. Dude, she used Y/N as bait, let her walk into a building full of vamps all alone.”
Charlie slaps Dean’s other cheek, pointing toward your tent. “That girl likes you and….” Blinking a few times Charlie wonders why Dean starts grinning before he pecks her cheek.
“Sorry, Charlie but Sammy will explain everything. I got to get my girl…” Dean is running off, not caring he looks odd between all the LARP’er as he’s wearing an FBI suit.
“What?” Eyebrows raised in confusion Charlie looks at Sam who can’t hold back a chuckle at the sight of his brother dashing toward your tent, running two elves over as he stumbles toward his goal.
“He got it bad, Charlie…so bad…” Sam slings an arm around Charlie’s shoulders, leading her toward Castiel and Jack as he starts to tell her what happened.
—-
“There you are! Damn, girl, you are hard to find.”
Dean gulps, drinking your outfit in. You are wearing a short dress and wings. There are flowers added to the straps and all over the thin fabric. Your long hair is curled, framing your face. You even got cute elf ears.
“What do you want?” Arms crossed over your chest you glare at Dean as he tries to find the right words, but your outfit makes his heart beat faster.
“I swear I didn’t plan anything. I told Michelle to get the fuck out of my way. I tried to find you by tracking your phone.” Dean talks fast enough to make himself gasp but he keeps on going. “I found this flyer.” Pointing at the piece of paper in his hands Dean gets closer to show you his prey.
“Yeah, I lost it at the motel room.”
“I knew you would be here and dragged everyone to the festival. I wanted to make sure you know I do like you and would love to get to know you better. You know I once led the knights of Moondoor into a glorious battle and I’ll do it again.” Dean is waiting for your response, but you burst into laughter at his serious expression.
“You know that I’m one of the evil elves of Moondoor, right? I’m the one slitting the good people’s throat open, Dean.” Smirking you get closer to the tall hunter, showing him your hidden weapons and he hums in appreciation.
“I got a thing for bad girls in that case. I could help you creating fear and panic through violence on innocent elves, princesses or whatever. Let me be your trustful knight, my lady.” Dean is tilting his head before he cups your face to capture your lips in a soft kiss. “Please…”
“You barely know me, Dean…” Confused you try to tame your wildly beating heart as Dean mumbles ‘I don’t care’ against your lips.
“Dean…”
“We hunted together for over a week and I like your style, Y/N. You are smart, caring and got a bad taste in food like me. I like you are a tough hunter but shy and want you to give me the chance to get to know you better by slaughtering innocent Moondoor citizens…” Dean smirks as you pat his chest, nodding.
“Lend me a hand, Lord Winchester. I think my sister and I can never have enough minions to help us.” Leading Dean out of the tent you smile as he takes your hand in his.
“You said Michelle shall fuck off?” Giggling you glance up at Dean.
“Not exactly but I told her to stay away and that Sammy and I do not like having a bitch around. Now let’s be bad and kill some elves…” Dean chuckles as you nod eagerly, pointing toward another tent.
“Let’s kill these first, I bet they won’t see us coming…” Sneaking behind the tent you squeal as Dean tosses you over his shoulder to run toward the Impala, growling something like ‘I’ve got this’ and ‘son of a elves bitch’ as almost the whole LARP’er community is running after the hunter.
Sam is watching the scene laughing, not knowing if Dean realized he just kidnapped a queen, and everyone is after him.
“Shall we tell him they won’t stop till they got hold of her?” Charlie chuckles glancing at Dean pushing an Orc away.
“Nah, way more fun to watch him defend his prey.” Sam laughs as Dean sprints toward his brother, screaming for help as you giggle.
“Dean, let me down and they will stop chasing us…” You scold but Dean won’t have it.
“No way, Sweetheart. I will never let you down again…” With that Dean runs faster to get away from the angry mob trying to get hold of his girl.

Money and Misunderstandings (au / 4k words / lawyer!cas / kindergarten teacher!dean)
Prompt 10 from my ‘30 Destiel Prompts’ for @destielfactory
ao3 link
Dean pulled at his tie again. He could swear they were designed originally as a way to torture people to death.
Sam turned to see his brother fiddling with the knot. “Dude, stop it. The party has barely started, you can’t take your tie off yet.” He slapped Dean’s hand away.
Dean grumbled. “Fine. I’ll keep it on. But I ain’t gonna act like I’m happy about it.”
Sam just rolled his eyes in response.
It was looks like the bitch-face Sam was giving him that made Dean almost regret being proud as hell of his kid brother.
Sam had just graduated from law school and managed to get an internship at the extremely prestigious Novak & Sons. Dean knew that the company must be a big deal because it had recently been splashed across the news.
Apparently, the super old guy who owned the law firm had bitten the dust and left the whole thing to one of his sons. Dean couldn’t see the big deal about it all but Sam had been glued to the news the week that it all went down.
Regardless, Sam was now an intern (though an unpaid one so Dean still helped him out with rent and bills), which meant he got invited to swanky parties thrown by the firm any time they sealed a major deal with another supposedly big deal client.
Sam might be able to fit in with these snooty bastards, but Dean couldn’t. This wasn’t even a damn party. Just a bunch of rich people standing around chortling at each other and having conversations about the newest yacht they’d bought.
Dean was interrupted in his grumblings by a guy walking up to him and Sam.
“Winchester, isn’t it?” The guy asked Sam, obnoxiously.
Dean bristled. This guy didn’t even know Sam’s name. Douchebag.
“Yes, sir, it’s Sam.” Sam stuck out his hand for the man to shake. The man accepted, giving it a sharp shake.
Then he turned his hard gaze to Dean.
“And who is this?” The man said with a subtle sneer.
“Oh, this is my brother, Dean Winchester. Dean, this is my boss, Michael Novak.” Sam introduced them.
Ah! The ultimate douchebag.
Neither man offered a hand to shake. They’d sussed each other already.
“And what is it you do Dean?” Because you certainly don’t belong here.
“I’m a kindergarten teacher.” Dean said, proudly
Michael’s face soured further (if that was even possible).
“Don’t they say that teaching kindergarten is like glorified babysitting?” Michael chortled.
Dean’s eyes narrowed. This guy was already skating on thin fucking ice. And that ice just cracked.
“Listen here, asshole.” Dean pointed a finger at the suited bastard. He could see Sam cringe and look at the floor next to him. But nothing would stop him now. “My kids are awesome. I’m teaching them to be even more awesome adults when they’re older. I just hope none of them turn into jumped up douchebags like you.”
“Dean!” Sam despaired.
“Sorry, Sam.” Dean mumbled. But he wasn’t sorry. Not really. He was only sorry that he’d embarrassed his brother. He would never apologise for defending his choice of career.
Dean chanced a glance at Michael. If the dude was a cartoon, he’d probably have steam coming out of his ears right about now.
“I’m going to the bar.” Dean murmured, leaving Sam to apologise on his brother’s behalf.
Dean hoped there wouldn’t be consequences for Sam after his outburst. He just hated it when people looked down on other people for their jobs. Basic respect for others was something he prioritises with his kindergarteners. It was a shame that some adults couldn’t seem to grasp the concept.
He walked through the crowd of guests like a storm cloud towards the bar.
Luckily, it seemed most of the attendees were relying on the waiters for their drink orders meaning the bar was empty save for the bartender. Dean slumped onto one of the stools.
“What’re you after, Brother?” The guy asked as he made his way over to Dean.
“Whatever isn’t that fancy shit everyone else sees to be having.”
The bartender, Benny his name tag read, laughed a deep, rich laugh. “I feel that. How’s a good, smooth whiskey sound?”
“Finally, someone talking my language.” Dean smiled.
Benny passed him over a tumbler of gorgeous brown liquid.
Dean lifted it in silent cheers and downed it in one go, sucking his lips at the sharp burn it sent down his throat. “Another one where that came from, dude.” Dean slid the glass across the bar top back towards Benny.
“You sure, Brother?” Benny questioned.
“Sure as shit. I gotta get through this night somehow.” Dean mumbled.
“It can’t be that bad, can it?” A voice that wasn’t Benny’s (or Sam’s for that matter) appeared from Dean’s right.
Dean turned his head to find a dude around his age looking back at him with distinctive blue eyes.
The guy had on a suit and tie much like that other people in the room. But, the tie was loosened and curled backwards towards the end. His top button was undone and his trenchcoat that blanketed the whole outfit seemed as though it was barely hanging on to his shoulders.
How come this guy could come dressed like that but Dean couldn't loosen the tie that had been strangling him for two hours already. (The dude looked like he’d just had seven minutes in heaven with someone in the cleaning cupboard for god’s sake!)
Dean was snapped out of his judgement of the guy in front of him by Benny placing a fresh glass of whiskey on the counter. The bartenders gave him a wink and looked slyly over to the trenchcoat guy still standing, leaning against the bar.
What was Benny trying to say?
Dean didn’t have long to think it over as the bartender moved away to collect dirty glasses at the other end of the bar, leaving Dean and the trenchcoat guy alone.
“So,” Trenchcoat Guy continued, perching himself on the seat next to Dean, “what are you doing here if this evening is so torturous to you?” The words were said, not with bitter condescension like Michael might have asked, but, it seemed, with genuine interest.
Alright, Dean could play ball. Plus, this guy was hot. Dean would be thinking of a flirtatious answer if he wasn’t conscious of embarrassing Sam again by hitting on someone who is probably one of his co-workers.
“I’m here with my brother, Sam.” Dean explained. “He’s just started as an intern here. Wouldn’t kill the bastards to pay him though, he works harder than any kid I know.”
Dean winced. He has gotta stop insulting the people Sam works with or for.
“And I take it, this isn’t your usual environment to socialise in?” Trenchcoat Guy enquired.
Dean huffed a laugh. “You could say that. Turns out I don’t so much enjoy being looked down on for my job, no matter how much I might love my brother.”
Trenchcoat Guy frowned. “What happened?”
“Some dude called Michael made a dick comment about me being a kindergarten teacher. Told him exactly what I thought about his opinion and embarrassed my brother in the process. So I sought refuge at the bar.”
Blue eyes darkened. “That’s appalling! I’m sorry that happened.” Trenchcoat Guy placed an earnest but comforting hand on Dean’s. “Being a teacher is incredibly admirable. You’re helping to shape and guide future members of society.” He assured. “There’s nothing more noble than that. Definitely not a lawyer who seems to see the money before the client.”
Where had this guy come from? He seemed a little weird and dorky but also genuine and caring.
Dean shrugged off the compliment. Just because he wasn’t okay with people disrespecting his job, didn’t mean he was comfortable being showered with praise and kind words.
Instead, Dean flagged down Benny and asked for a beer, looking to Trenchcoat Guy to silently ask if he’d like one too. Trenchcoat Guy nodded.
The two men kept eye contact as they took the first sips of their beers. Dean’s eyes fell to the way the guy’s lips shaped around the lip of the bottle. He flicked his eyes up again to find the guy had seen the movement. He knew exactly what he was doing to Dean, if the way he slowly licked lingering droplets of beer from his bottom lip was anything to go by.
Any other day, any other time and Dean would have jumped at the chance to, well, jump this guy. But, he wouldn't do that to Sam.
Instead, he cursed the fates for sending him this awesome guy at exactly the wrong time. Taking another sip of his beer, he moved to get up from his seat. He’d better go find Sam and check he hadn’t ruined his brother’s position in the company.
He was about to open his mouth to bid the beautiful stranger goodbye when the guy’s eyes left Dean’s and locked onto something over Dean’s shoulder. The blood seemed to drain from his face. Frantic blue eyes snapped back to Dean’s.
“Kiss me.”
“What?” Dean asked, confused at the turn this had taken. He could feel his resolve slipping. Sam’s reputation be damned.
The guy didn’t answer.
Suddenly, his hand was on Dean’s cheek and he was placing a deep kiss on Dean’s lips.
Dean had no idea what was going on but his night had improved dramatically in the last three seconds so he definitely wasn’t going to complain. He placed a hand on the guy’s waist, pulling him in closer to his own body.
After a few heated moments, the guy pulled away. Though Dean kept the hand on his waist so he couldn’t move far. He wasn’t letting him go any time soon, that was for sure.
“I’m sorry.” Trenchcoat Guy panted, chest rising to gulp down air that he’d been deprived of. “My assbutt of an ex was coming towards us.” He tried to step back out of Dean’s embrace.
But Dean held his grip firm.
“No need to apologise, dude.” Dean assured.
Looking into the guy’s eyes, feeling his moving chest against his own, Dean could feel his will power slipping.
Screw it.
Dean pressed his forehead against the other man’s. “Stop me if you don’t want this.” He whispered before he placed his lips over the other man’s.
The kiss was deepened instantly. By who Dean wasn’t sure but at this point, he really didn’t care.
Dean allowed himself to be manhandled against the bar, never breaking the passionate connection he had with this wonderful stranger.
As if the guy could read his mind he softened the kiss to whisper briefly against Dean’s lips. “I’m Castiel, by the way.”
Dean’s brain was so preoccupied that he could barely stutter out his own name in return.
“Hmm.” Castiel hummed against Dean’s lips. “I don’t want to be presumptuous, Dean. But I’d very much like it if you took me home. Right now.”
They broke apart and Dean looked into Castiel’s eyes. The calm blue from before had been replaced with seductive black.
Yep. This was definitely happening.
“Let’s go.” Dean grabbed Castiel’s hand to drag him towards the exit.
But Castiel stopped him.
“What about your brother?”
Shit. Trust his downstairs brain to throw logic out the window and forget about his brother.
But he dreaded seeing the look of disappointment on Sam’s face when he told him where he was going. And who with.
“Don’t worry, Brother.” Benny’s voice spoke up from the bar. “I’ll find him and let know you’ve gone home.”
Dean shot Benny a grateful look. “Thanks, man.” He tried not to weirded out that Benny had seen what had just gone down.
He once again grabbed Castiel’s hand and tugged him towards the nearest exit.
Once outside, Dean hailed a taxi. He would have loved to have shown Castiel his beautiful 67 Impala but he’d had a couple of drinks and there was no way he was going to risk driving home. Plus, even without the drinks, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to keep his hands to himself long enough to get back to his.
As soon as they made it through Dean’s front door, he sobered slightly. As respectful and understanding as Castiel had been earlier, he was clearly used to the finer things in life if he was at the firm party. Dean and Sam’s apartment was a far cry from that.
“It’s not much…” Dean explained.
Castiel turned from where he’d been doing a quick scan of the main room to lock eyes with Dean. “The only thing I’m concerned with right now is where your bed is.”
Dean could only point towards the corridor leading to his room.
Castiel gave Dean a dark look and pulled him along by his tie. Maybe ties weren’t so bad after all.
*  *  *
The next morning, Dean awoke to the feel of bare skin against his own.
The body on top of his shifted and he could feel a rumble travel up through it.
“Good morning, Dean.” Castiel hummed.
“Mornin’, Sunshine.” Dean sighed, nuzzling into Castiel’s dark hair and placing a kiss against his temple.
Dean was about to suggest breakfast when he sensed the stomping moose steps of Sam coming down the corridor outside his room.
“I don’t care if you’re hungover, I’m shouting at-” Sam stormed into the room. But he was cut off by the sight in front of him.
Dean cringed. Benny obviously hadn’t told Sam everything when they’d left last night.
“Oh my god! Mr Novak!” Sam snapped himself back to reality.
Dean turned to look at Castiel. Mr Novak? Was Castiel one of the stuck up sons of bitches sitting on a heck ton of money and not giving any of it to hard working interns like Sam?
“Hello, Samuel.” Castiel greeted, lifting himself to sit against the headboard. “You can call me Castiel. I feel as though we’ve moved past the normal professional relationship now.”
“Okay, Castiel.” Sam was clearly still in shock. “I’m just going to leave now.” He cleared his throat awkwardly and then ducked out of the room, closing the door softly behind him.
Dean turned again to Castiel. “Okay, what just happened?” He asked, completely confused as hell.
Castiel placed a hand on Dean’s. “I’ll explain everything but I think you need to go and make sure your brother is okay.”
Dean was unsure. He didn’t want to just leave Castiel in his bed alone.
“Go, Dean. I’ll wait here for you.” Castiel said, sensing Dean’s apprehension.
“Okay.” Dean submitted, quickly pecking Castiel on the lips before getting up from the bed, throwing on some boxers and leaving the room.
It wasn't until he was closing the bedroom door behind him that Dean realised he’d just kissed Castiel goodbye like they were boyfriends or something.
Way to go, Dean. Scare the dude off before anything had properly started.
Anyway, one problem at a time, he thought as he rounded the corner to find Sam pacing the length of the living room.
“So…” Dean began, awkwardly.
“I can’t believe you, Dean.” Sam said, angrily. “Did you not think of my career at all? Of all the people to go home with at that party, you went home with my boss?”
Hang on..
“Boss?” Dean asked, “I thought that Michael dude was your boss?!” Dean said, confused as hell.
Sam ran his hands through his hair in a frustrated manner. “I’m an intern, Dean. Practically everyone in the damn company is my boss. And Castiel? He’s the boss.”
Dean paled. “What?”
Sam sighed. “He runs the whole damn thing! Didn’t you see the news a couple months ago? His dad died and left the whole firm solely to Castiel. It created a big stink because his brothers, including Michael Novak, didn’t get a look in. They’ve been contesting the will for months now.”
Dean slumped onto the couch. He couldn’t believe it. Castiel had lied to him? Well, maybe not lied, just didn’t tell the whole truth.
Sam saw Dean's mood suddenly turn and frowned. “You really didn’t know?”
Dean silently shook his head.
“I’m sure he has his reasons for not saying anything.” Sam tried to reassure his brother.
Dean waved it off. “Don’t worry about it.” He said. “Yeah, I really like the guy, but once he realises who he shacked up with, he’s not gonna hang around.” He shrugged, accepting the situation for what it was.
There was no way someone like Castiel, with that amount of wealth and riches, would be interested when he understood that Dean was a grown man who still lived with his little because they couldn’t afford much else right now.
“Why don’t you let him decide that for himself?” Sam asked, pulling Dean from his negative thoughts. “All I know is, I’ve only met Castiel a handful of times but he’s only one of the Novak brothers that has ever tried to even learn my name.”
Dean was torn. This was such a big thing for Castiel to neglect to mention.
“Man, I don’t know. This only started because he was hiding from an ex at the party.” Dean explained. “And now I say it out loud, it sounds like a lie. God, I’m so stupid.” He dropped his head into his hands.
“Damnit, Dean!” Don’t you ever watch anything on TV other than Doctor Sexy?”
Huh? Dean shot his brother a confused squint.
Sam shook his head in exasperation. “Even before their dad dying and the inheritance fiasco, the Novak brothers have always been sort of minor celebrities - comes with the money I guess.” Sam explained. “All I know is that he did have what the media called a ‘messy break up’ with a guy who worked for the company. And he was definitely at the party last night.”
Dean sighed. He didn’t know what to think.
“Look, Dean. You clearly like this guy already. He’s literally in your room waiting for you. Go talk to him.”
Dean nodded and stood up, taking a determined breath.
Sam gave him a supportive pat on the back.
Just before he left the room, Dean turned back to his brother. “Are we good?”
Sam smiled. “Yeah, man, we’re good.”
Dean nodded and left.
When he re-entered his room, Castiel was still sitting in Dean’s bed, picking at a thread in the covers. He looked up at the sound of the door clicking shut.
“How did it go?” Castiel asked, patting the space next to himself, silently asking Dean to join him again.
Dean sat on the bed, but he didn’t get back under the covers next to Castiel. He still wasn’t sure what to do. “It’s okay. We smoothed everything out.” Dean nodded. “Found out some stuff about you though.”
Castiel nodded in understanding.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were the boss? My brother’s boss?!” Dean asked, pleading for an explanation.
“I wanted to come up to you. I’d already seen you from across the room earlier and when I finally gathered the courage to come up to you, you were complaining about my party and clearly had no idea who I was.” Castiel explained.
Dean flushed. “Sorry about that.”
“Don’t be sorry, Dean.” Castiel reached over to take Dean’s hand in both of his. “It was refreshing. With everything that has been going on recently, it was nice to have a break from that. And then my ex-boyfriend was coming towards us. And, well, you know the rest…” Castiel trailed off.
“The douchebag who everyone seems to know about except me.” Dean added. “He sounds like a son of a bitch.”
Castiel hummed in agreement. “That’s an understatement.” He muttered. “I found out Bart was sleeping with someone else a few months ago and I ended it immediately.” Castiel paused at Dean’s whispered ‘bastard’. “However, when my father died, he tried crawling back. He was probably after my new wealth and position in the company. I, of course, rejected him. But, Bart is the kind of person who doesn’t take no for an answer.”
Dean scowled. He may have only just found out the diner details, but he wouldn’t hesitate to punch that dick in the face if he ever saw him.
Taking in Castiel’s downtrodden look, Dean sighed. “I understand all of that Cas. But you heard me last night. You run the show and you seem like a decent guy but how can you have hard working interns like Sam and not pay them a cent? While you sit on a literal throne of money?”
Dean looked down at his lap. He wasn’t sure he was going to like whatever Castiel had to say.
“Dean,” Castiel lifted Dean’s chin to make the man look at him, “I completely agree with everything you said. That’s one of the reasons my father left everything to me.” Castiel explained. “He knew I had new ideas for the company. He knew it was only a matter of time before he had to hand it over to his sons. So he left it all to me on the sole condition that I go ahead with the changes that I wanted to implement.”
Dean let out a breath and smiled. Okay, this sounded good. “What, uh, kinda stuff are you changing?”
“Firstly, we’re going to be taking on a lot more pro bono cases. We are sitting on a throne of money, as you say,” Dean blushed, “and it’s time we actually did something good with it.”
Dean nodded. Now Castiel mentioned it, he remembered Sam saying something about that when he’d first joined Novak & Sons.
“And,” Castiel continued, “though it hasn’t been announced to the public or even the employees themselves, interns will be getting a competitive rate of pay. You’re right. They do work hard for us and they deserve to be properly credited for it.”
Dean certainly hadn’t expected that. He’d expected Cas to say that it was out of his hands, or just simply that’s how things worked there.
“Now, can you please say something? I’m worried I’ve ruined this before it could even begin.” Castiel asked, shyly.
Dean smiled softly. “As long as you don’t mind slumming it with someone like me, I only have one more question.” Castiel nodded.
“Can I kiss you?”
Dean would give anything to never see that smile leave Cas’ face.
Instead of answering, Castiel pulled Dean towards him by the shoulder. The smile didn’t leave his face as Dean pressed a long, sweet kiss to his lips.
“I hope you’re ready,” Castiel said later after they’d parted for breath, “making out with the boss last night would have made quite a spectacle.”
Dean made a noise of indifference just as Sam shouted from the living room. “Woah, dude! You’re on the news making out with Castiel!”
“Told you.” Castiel said, triumphantly.
Dean just laughed and pulled Castiel back in for another deep kiss.
*  *  *
They still had a few issues to iron out before they embarked on a relationship, but in the end those issues seemed like small bumps in the road and it was a smooth ride after that.
Despite his brother’s relationship with the boss, Sam was treated no differently to anyone else. It was important to Castiel to make it clear that any achievements Sam had were entirely down to Sam himself and he had not been handed anything under family privileges.
And Sam’s hard work paid off. Within a few years, Novak & Sons had another major overhaul and became Winchester & Novak. (Castiel’s brothers had had something to say about, but as he’d been doing for years until that point, he just ignored them.)
Though, it was only a few months after the changes that Dean asked Castiel how pissed off his brothers would be if it was changed again to Winchester & Winchester. Castiel had just laughed and let Dean place the ring on his finger.
(Turns out, his brothers were extremely pissed off. Oh well.)
