" THE FOREST AND THE TOWN "

📌 Pairing: Step 1 Qiu/Tamarack x GN!MC (Separate)

📌 Can be read as romantic or platonic

Tamarack is the forest.

Hide and seek, enchanted stories about the creatures that linger around places people have yet to touch, the smell of fresh leaves after the rain all come to mind when you think of her.

The red mixed with golden leaves, the sun peeking in through the cracks, it was all very Tamarack.

She was confusing, no matter how long you knew her. Such as the forest behind your neighborhood, no matter how deep you are into the ever changing woods it all looks the same, and you can find yourself lost.

And when the forest no longer wants to play and the winds howl pushing away anything that might disturb its peace, like litter that destroys the environment, you think of the girl who felt distant to the world around her.

To most, the forest isnt that interesting. Sure it can spark interest the first time you wonder through its never ending expanse, but it eventually becomes nothing more than trees and bushes.

Some find discomfort beneath the trees, stories about how its haunted and out of this world, and that they all should all run for their lives or get stuck within the branches and piles of leaves that can pull you under.

However, to some, the forest means much more than that. If you wonder deep through its confusing paths and unmarked territory, theres wonders that makes the trouble worth while.

The pile of leaves hides nothing but a little girl, happy that her neighbor has found her. And the strong wind suddenly calms, and the trees grow and thrive. You knew you were welcomed here;

For the forest is where Tamarack met her very favourite person.

Qiu is the town

Ever busy, always housing the people who lives in it. Making sure they have a home, solid ground to walk on. Making sure they felt welcome.

The town sparks excitement, so many things to do, so many things that can get you hooked. It tempts you with corner stores and parks, theres always something new to see and try.

Houses are filled with the feeling of comfort, the streets filled with children laughing while riding their bikes. Qiu makes sure of it.

But the town grows as the earth turns. The people change, the bikes are old broken to use, and the children arent kids anymore.

Some stores had to go, they didnt fit the town anymore. Though the town finds it hard to figure out what fits in the space it used to occupy

The town couldn't take care of all those things at once.

People however, find it cool how some buildings are closed off. The cool breeze giving them the feeling of excitement.

It reminded you of them, of how Qiu did everything they could to include everyone. To go out of their way to be helpful.

Only to close theirselves off to the world around them when it got too much, how the gloves they used to wear didnt fit them anymore.

But to you, the town was where Qiu shone the brightest. Where they could show you each and every one of the buildings you have yet to enter;

Though they closed theirself off, the doors were wide open for their most precious neighbor.

I am SO GLAD YOU ASKED I will now be explaining why I adore Suitloon. (This is gonna get long)

During my first viewing of Season 2, I was absolutely hooked on Suitcase! I related to her a lot, being in middle school at the time I was figuring out life, and being a student with ADHD made me feel out of place and like others were taking advantage of me at times. I also related a lot to Balloon, as I was trying to prove myself to a strictly education-focused mother, it felt like I was nothing but a slacker in her mind, much like how Nickel views Balloon during season 2.

Besides my own relation to these characters, I'd like to talk about what happens in the show itself to solidify my adoration of Suitloon as a ship both platonic and romantic: (I know that Balloon is on the aro-ace spectrum, but I was shipping them before that was said. Objects in object shows having "sexualities" involving sex is a debatable thing as these are kids shows and I've had many debates with online friends on if objects would even have the... ahem... anatomy, let alone a sex drive OR the social idea of gender and sex existing within the object show universes. Do what you will, I see Balloon as demiromantic and Suitloon is bi4bi.)

Name a pair of characters in this show that are more devoted to each other and willing to sacrifice themselves for the other, I can't think of any, I find that Suitcase and Balloon are so intertwined with each other and that they truly and deeply care about each other.

Evidence of this devotion and sacrifice? I gotcha...

The elimination scene of Episode 11: Balloon knew how everyone would vote, seeing Suitcase being fed up with how Nickel treated them, and voted for himself to make it look like he voted for Nickel, and Suitcase voted for him, protecting her place in the alliance while sacrificing his place in the game. Suitcase, however, finally stands up for herself, calling out Nickels unjust behavior towards the both of them and sacrificing her place in the alliance to vouch for Balloons good character.

It's important to remember that Suitcase was friends with Balloon throughout the whole of the show! I don't see her being too socially unaware, she knew that everyone thought Balloon was a horrible person, especially two of her other friends Nickel and Baseball. She also expressed some skepticism of Balloon in Episode 6, over his previous manipulation in season 1, which they HEALTHILY COMMUNICATE ABOUT *cough* Nickel learn something here pls *cough*, and in Episode 10 her anxiety/hallucinations question which of her bonds are solid or hollow. Despite this, she CHOOSES to be close with Balloon because she genuinely cares about him, sacrificing her social stance to the other contestants AND taking a risk in trusting him at first, before they form a very solid bond.

[NOT CANON] Meanwhile, Balloon is also not socially unaware, he knows everyone hates him, and while being friends with Suitcase, I like to imagine he would think "I should stop associating with her so that she doesn't suffer the other contestants judgement."

Rain On Your Charade. That whole scene, enough said.

Theres many other instances that show their devotion to each other as well, but these are a few of the most important and my favorite ones!

Overall, the main reason why I love Suitloon is the raw devotion they have for each other in the face of adversity. Suitcases story is one of overcoming social pressure and anxiety, learning when and how to stand up for both herself and for someone she cares about. Balloons story is learning when the approval and judgement of others matters, as well as finding people who genuinely care about him and learning how important these people are. These stories intertwine in a very natural and believable way and make these two feel destined to be together in the end, whether that's platonic or romantic.

I also find it important to bring up this chart:

Basically, Nickel is the ringleader, Baseball is a reinforcer/outsider, Suitcase is a defender, and Balloon is the target. The rest of the II cast fall between reinforcers, outsiders, and assistants. The way Nickel treats Balloon is textbook bullying, not one other person stands up for Balloon publicly, and Suitcase is doing the right thing standing up for him.

Theres also A BUNCH of other reasons I love this ship that have to do with my own preferences,

Friends to Lovers > Enemies to Lovers sorry Nickloon fans.

Its got a "Romeo and Juliet" kind of dynamic with how Nickel and Baseball play into the situation

The Nickel-Suitcase-Balloon dynamic reeks of "overprotective father hating his daughters boyfriend" as well (like hotel transylvania type shit)

Their dynamic is sickly sweet they are so cute oh my god

While on Instagram and Wattpad in yee olden days (2017-2020) I got a bit of a reputation for being a Suitloon fanatic and played into it, I was dubbed "The Queen of Suitloon" for a moment. It gave me a place in the fandom, and I cherish my time there greatly.

TLDR: Suitcase and Balloon are devoted to each other and that's why I love them so much.

okay take everything with a grain of salt because im not the izumi expert but here's my madness with izukao i was half asleep (slightly edited i had to fix typos and add a Little. for my sake.)

it's impossible for me to be normal when izukao exist. like Good lord theyre such a messsss

because okay. Izumi's like this guy who conceals his emotions and avoids sentimentaiity through Working and reaching his own standards. and his attitude is the embodiment of tough love. he's mean and nice at once and holds himself so highly because he has no choice. at least that's what he thinks. and it keeps his sense of self intact. without his faux confidence he may very well be nothing. i digress, he's not easy to love. he also has this deep seated fear now of ruining people so theres that..

kaoru's a normal guy going through the process of figuring out what he needs exactly. i think smth important about him is that friendship and connection is inherently vital in his existence. he learns to be loved for real by becoming closer to kanata and through that love he learns what it's like to not be so lonely. or at the very least, what being lonely together can mean. his intense loneliness doesn't have to plague him forever, maybe growing up is about learning just that.

he's a sweetie he's thoughtful and cares a lot for certain people.. he's always trying to brighten a room no matter what. knows holding himself to his dad's expectations is fruitless but he kinda does it anyway . god his self worth for awhile was so bad

i think izukao work because neither of them are perfect, they're so messy and complicated. in different And similar ways it's just so. whfhg they cant Fix eachother, i'd hate if that was how they were. but they definitely can help a lot. while also navigating this weird limbo of trying to learn who the other really is.

at first they have a friendly rivalry. being yumenosaki's Pretty People and all. (socially they've got Reputations) i think izumi really benefits from lighthearted carefree ppl interacting with him. again it's not easy to love izumi.. so the fact that kaoru does start treating him like a friend means something. kaoru's so good at tearing ppl's heads out of the clouds. cough rei cough

and basically zumi can learn So much from him. how to appreciate more, maybe feel more. Yeah. just feel. stop being stoic and face your fears idiot. once youve worked yourself to the bone til all your emotions run dry, it won't even be worth it.

izumi helps kaoru with self confidence in his own roundabout izumi way. it's like..basic skills Be more sure of yourself you're being a pushover, don't be naive— oh that was a stupid thought pattern i see.. thanks. and at first kaoru can't tell if the guy even likes him (he rants to rei abt this and rei finds it amusing but helps regardless) but eventually he decides on "he likes me he's just weird"

izumi and his bottled up emotions, he also conceals Any fear with a wall of stone. and so him not communicating this is an issue (not that kaoru is the best with communication early on either. they're both scared)

they teach eachother how to stop hiding so much.. and izumi learns to like the sound of the ocean

they hold hands and take candid photos of eachother! they kiss passionately and go on suffocatingly romantic dates. they hang out indoors when it's raining as if it's their last day on earth. thank you for reading

Dash stepped out of his truck, locking the door behind him. Shrugging his backpack onto his shoulder, Dash headed towards the front entrance of Casper High where he could see his friends waiting.

“Hey! Dash! Where have you been? I was trying to text you all day yesterday but you never answered me.” Kwan said, throwing an arm around Dash’s shoulder.

“Haha, sorry.” Dash said, scratching the side of his face. “I kind of wanted a sort of relaxing weekend. Decided to just go for a couple walks and all that.”

“Where’s your jacket?” Paulina asked. “Not that I’m complaining. It’s nice to finally see you wearing something other than your letterman jacket but something must seriously be up if you don’t have it.”

Dash scoffed. “I do not wear my letterman jacket that much.”

“Sorry to break it to you bro but you’re hardly ever seen without it.” Kwan said.

“Ooh did you finally meet some girl Dash? Did she sweep you off your feet enough for you to lend it to her?” Star asked, a teasing look on her face.

“What? No!” Dash exclaimed.

“Well then where is-” Paulina got cut off.

“YOU’RE AN ITEM?!” Star and Paulina shrieked together.

Dash stilled, frozen to the spot. Slowly he turned and looked back up at his friends again. Star and Paulina looked very confused but Kwan looked like he was trying not to laugh at them.

“What?” Dash asked, chuckling nervously.

“When a guy gives their letterman jacket to someone else that means that they’re in a steady relationship.” Paulina said, gesturing with her hands. “Why else would someone give someone else their jacket?”

“Uh, because it’s cold out?” Dash said.

“But it’s part of the high school code, Dash!”

Dash snorted. “You know what also had all sorts of dumb rules and codes? The A-Lister club. That’s why we got rid of the membership and paperwork, remember?”

“But why would you give Fenton your jacket if you’re not dating him then? It doesn’t make sense.” Star said, crossing her arms.

Dash ran a hand down her face. “Haven’t you guys ever thought of being nice? It was raining? And cold?”

“It sounds so romantic!” Paulina fake sobbed.

“If you and Danny aren’t dating then what were you guys doing before you gave him your jacket?” Kwan asked.

“Uh.” Dash hadn’t thought he needed to come up with a lie. He didn’t think through the fact that in order for Danny to return his jacket and hoodie at school on Monday would involve doing it in front of someone. It didn’t matter if it was his friends or not, Casper High’s rumor mill was faster than even the news station covering ghost attacks.

What was he gonna say? That Danny was being chased by ghost hunters? That he literally ran right into Dash and punched him? That he was actually thinking about Danny before he showed up and couldn’t stop thinking about him all of Sunday?

Apparently Dash had taken too long to answer because the next thing he knew the bell was ringing and Kwan was patting him on the shoulder with a knowing look.

“Don’t worry. You can tell us when you’re ready.”

Dash groaned and begrudgingly followed after his friends into the building. He looked up and after a moment saw Danny with his two friends across the school yard. They looked like they were both reaming into him in different ways, Tucker teasing Danny while Sam seemed to be lecturing him about something. After a moment all three of them looked up and met Dash’s gaze.

Tucker was trying very unsuccessfully to stifle his laughter and Sam was sending a glare his way. Danny gave an awkward pair of jazz hands and smiled nervously at him.

Dash rolled his eyes and put on his biggest smile, making eye contact and waving at Manson. Turning back towards his friends, Dash could only hear Tucker’s raucous laughter directed at Sam.

“Did you just wave at Danny? Oh my god.”

Dash groaned at Paulina. As if his friends weren’t bad enough, he was gonna have to deal with Fenton’s friends too. He snuck a look back at Danny.

After a moment Dash felt a nudge on his arm and looked up to see Kwan giving him a teasing smile. Dash scowled and walked into the front entrance of Casper High.

You and Dia are both staring up at a mushroom growing at the top of the wall of the cave you are standing in. Both of you are close to the same height, and neither one of you can reach it. "You know I won't catch you if you fall," Dia calls to you as you slowly make your way up. You know he's bluffing.

some say that El would have to die for byler to work.

Theres a lot to unpack here...

First off: el exists outside of mike and it is so misogynistic and narrow minded to assume that she can only exist as a partner to mike and in a relationship with him. She has her own interests and desires and personality that goes WAY beyond Mike and does not need Mike to survive. In the beginning, yeah, Mike was her life line, but now she has way more people In her life and will continue to make new friends and make new enemies, too. There are more Mike’s out there. And she knows this too, as she refers to Mike as her “first boyfriend”, implying that she is not only open to having a second, third, or even fourth boyfriend, but that she genuinely wants one. She knows that there are plenty of fish in the sea. At first, all she had known was Papa and Mike. Her vision was very black and white, and she was convinced that the only trust worthy people were Mike, Dustin, and Lucas. But now shes seen the world. She’s met more and more people and as the seasons pass by her view of the world has widened, and she now knows that the world isn’t full of “bed men”. She knows that she can trust more than one person and that the world isn’t always a battle field between 2 options. El is her own person. She does not need mike to survive!

Second: Mike’s happiness does not depend on El. We see that in season two, even though he misses her dearly, he can still be happy without her. So saying that el would have to disappear, or no longer be a romantic option for Mike, is implying that Mike will always choose El unless he has no other choice. And we know this for a fact because, whenever it came down to El or Will, he always chose Will. In season 2 he did call El for 353 days, but the second that Will was in need, he completely forgot about her and even admitting to Max that she was dead. In season 3 he biked multiple miles in the rain for a “friend” and then ran into the woods, (which, by the way, if you have the canon “Will Byers Secret Files” there’s a map of Hawkins inside of it, which shows that Castle Byers is a incredibly significant distance from the Wheeler’s. Like multiple miles. So the fact that Mike was willing to possibly get hurt while biking in deep fog, rain, and thunder, all to apologize to Will, when he couldn’t even apologize to El in sunshine, or when he couldn’t even bring himself to call her, to call her! Like he couldn’t even take a few minutes out of his day to dial a freaking number and apologize to El, who apparently is the “most important thing in the world to him”, yet didn’t even waste a second to apologize to Will, that says something. Mike most definitely does not need El and he also does not always fall back on her. If it came down to El or Will, he’d choose Will. And he does not rely on el for happiness, in fact Mike seems the most irrational and irritated when together with El.

Please stop making El and Mike out to be the romantic duo of the century. They barely even knew eachother for a week and were supposed to believe that he was in love with her at first sight, just because he gave her food and a bed? That’s like... the bare necessities. And I bet that if El didn’t have powers and didn’t know where Will was, Mike wouldn’t have hesitated to abandon her and turn her in. I do believe that now, Mike cares about El. I think he has a strong bond with her, but I don’t think he’s in love with her. I mean, you saw how he reacted to her kissing him! That is not the face of love or happiness, or even disbelief. He 100% just noticed something. Finn is a brilliant actor, and I’m sure that if the Duffer’s told him to act “in love” he would not have made that face, or kept his eyes open during the whole kiss. The duffers had to have specifically put it in the script and even tell Finn to look utterly shocked and disgusted.

Anyways, I went off on a tangent here but to sum it all up: El is her own person who exists out side of anyone and does not need Mike to be a good character, and if you only like her when she’s with Mike, you got an issue. Again, ship whoever you want! I won’t bash you for it ! But these misogynistic ideals gotta change.

Xena: Warrior Princess Review

During Pride Month 2020, I finally got around to watch ‘Xena’. A show that had been in my to-watch list for years, but never got around to start. And when I finally did, I was pleasantly surprised. It was not what I expected and it was everything I think my 11 year old self would have loved.

The one thing that surprised me about the show, was the lack of packaging. Even though it was a fantasy, it also played with different kinds of genres too. I’ve talked about this before in my other review - ‘Xena’ was made at a time when TV had very few rules/rarely had a set audience, since there were parts of the show that were clearly for kids and there were other parts that were clearly for adults (therefore had much more flexibility). I admired how they weren’t afraid to break barriers and touch on deep themes such as religion, morality, redemption, spirituality, motherhood, forgiveness etc - even more than shows of today are able. I also loved how they played into the idea of ‘murder’ and how much it can damage a person - not just the person who commits the act, but the many people affected afterwards. I wasn’t expecting it to be that extreme. It made me think that this must of been the inspiration for ‘Game of Thrones’.

I see a lot of comments here and there, saying how ‘cheesy and terrible’ it was but to just accept it because its part of the fun. And while like any show it does suffer from the occasional spell of bad writing (the whole of season 5) but it was also shown to be very aware of that fact and never took itself too seriously - unlike some shows I could mention.

And regarding the ‘cheese’ factor (what 90s show wasn’t) It definitely can be, but I would call it ‘camp’ and ‘experimental’ more than anything else. (Don’t diss the poor use of CGI - I’m personally sympathetic to what was avaliable to them at the time) The style of humour reminded me of Taika Waititi’s filmmaking. If you’ve watched any of his films such as ‘Hunt for The Wilderpeople’ or ‘Jojo Rabbit’, then you know what I’m talking about. I liked how little they cared about being accurate or logical, which added to the ‘bonkers’ element in the show - which you can see in all of Taika Waititi’s films.

In all seriousness, a show centered around two women in their late twenties, who are realistic sizes (not trying to play teenagers). One of whom is a reformed mass murderer, who has lived a life experience, trying to do good in the world for the first time, picking the other one up who has no life experience prior (after they bugged them until they said ‘ok fine’) in their path to redemption. Just two women who become friends travelling the world together, fighting crime, having a laff, learning from one another without any toxicity - when suddenly when the stakes are raised - they realise ‘oh I'm actually falling in love with this person’ I have watched a lot of badly written shows in my childhood enough to know that, that’s not ‘cheesy’. I’ve never seen a story like that in my entire life. I’m not at all surprised that Russel T Davis was inspired by it while writing the Doctor and Rose’s relationship in ‘Doctor Who’ since he’s gay himself.

What’s more amazing about their love story is how they’re both develop as separate people as well. There was this video essay explaining ‘Why you should watch Angel’ the spin off series to Buffy; how ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer ‘was all about growing up and ‘Angel’ was all about being an adult. With Xena: Warrior Princess, you have both of those stories at the same time.

Xena’s character was such a multifaceted experience to watch. And I can’t imagine anyone else who could play her as well as Lucy Lawless. What planet did they get that actress from? She's flawless! The amount of skill she has to put herself into a very physical role is astonishing. I personally had a love/hate relationship with her character all series long. Not in the way that I hated her, just that I couldn’t trust if she was all good or bad, which I know was intentional on the writers part. I haven’t seen a character quite like her before. She felt very much like a fallen angel; almost like the villain of her own story. Some of my favourite episodes come from fleshing out her character and dark past (‘Locked up and Tied Down’ is one of them) which reminds the audience that's she's not the stereotypical hero everyone expects. I loved her transformation from being this incredibly stoic warrior to being content and happy with who she is in season six, all because of a woman she fell in love with along the way.

I’ve always thought of Gabrielle as the real hero and narrator of ‘Xena’. She’s the prime example of ‘a normal person becoming extrodinary’. Gabrielle’s coming of age story starting out as an innocent girl from a poor village dreaming of adventure, and ending as this vicious warrior who realises the ‘adventure’ wasn’t how she made it out to be is honestly the best character arc that I’ve ever seen. I loved how travelling with Xena made her realise her passion for writing (which was never going to happen in her home town, given the ‘sexist’ and ‘heteronormative’ ideas) and that she became a amazon princess like Xena. In regards to her sexuality, which is more up for debate than Xena’s (which I think we can all agree is bisexual) I personally interpret her as gay, just in terms of how she was written. Theres this moment in season 4 where she's being held up her hair, and Xena “symbolically” cuts it off ‘freeing her’. And she never really gets with a man afterwards, unless she’s being ‘possessed. It reminded me of a moment in one of Hayao Miyasaki’s films ‘Laputa, Castle in the Sky’ where the bad guy Moska shoots Sheeta’s ‘princess hair off’ which symbolises her transition from child to adult.

The cinematography was breathtaking. There was some great utilisation of New Zealand as the scenery. So was the soundtrack. You could tell it was made by experienced filmmakers. One of my favourite things about the show was the domestic elements - moments in the show where time seemed to stop - which made the world around the characters seem very real and magical. Even though it was a show that featured a lot of action/adventure, there was also this gentleness to it as well. For example, you could feel the wetness of the rain, the warmth of the sun and the clashing of the waves. This technique is used in Hayao Miayasaki’s work a lot .

The technique is referred to as ‘MA’ 空虚 meaning emptiness in Japanese. ‘Miyasaki describes this as the time between a clap’

The episode ‘A Day in the Life’ in season two is a really good example of this technique being used.

To my understanding, they used a lot of the local actors in New Zealand, which according to Lucy Lawless, consisted of ‘African immigrants and other different ethnicites’. It was so refreshing to see such a diverse show (despite some slip ups) especially in the 90s. I appreciated the idea that if the actors or extras couldn’t do an ‘american accent’ people could just talk in their natural speech which was also very refreshing.

The LGBT representation was surprisingly amazing. I never expected so many queer characters in one show - especially under the censors. There was this one episode where they had a trans woman - played by an actual trans actress - win a beauty contest. It made me cry. Not to mention the actress was an aids activist. It was actually Lucy Lawless’ idea to kiss her which was incredibly controversial at that time considering how everyone thought you could catch aids just by kissing. I can definitey see how it validated people back in the 90s.

When people told me that Xena: Warrior Princess was one of the greatest love stories, I thought they were exaggerating a little. But no, watching the show in context, I found out that it really is. Despite its obvious restrictions, It made me realise (regarding token gay couples today) how often television writers rely on physicality and drama to convey a ‘love story’ and how much of it is actually pandering the audience. One of the reasons why Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship felt so genuine is because it was built on mutual respect/compassion and they were also best friends. I felt like I was witnessing something very real and private. It didn’t need kissing scenes or drama to make it interesting.

It really helped that most of the writers were queer also. There’s this opening scene in season 4, panning over to Gabrielle giving Xena a massage (metaphor for sex - because they weren’t able to show that on screen) which I consider to be one of the most iconic scenes in media - considering how I wanted to sick up my supper when I watched the 10 minute ‘empty’ explicit sex scene in ‘Blue in the Warmest Colour’. The difference when something is written by a queer women vs a straight man.

Because the creators weren’t allowed to write their love story in the normal way, due to the studio forbidding them to, they found creative ways to showcase that love on screen - which made for a very magical/sensual experience. And I can safely say, if anyone has doubts about watching ‘Xena’, whenever I expected to be queer baited at a few points in the show, I was proved wrong time and time again. It’s the most romantical show I’ve ever seen in my life!

LIKES: i love slasher films go figure, but i'm also the biggest sucker for rom coms and historical movies (like jane austen type, not war ofc.) my music taste is anywhere from rock 2 indie n pop. (my favorite artists though are mitski, hozier, twst, and the nbhd.) baking is one of my favorite activities, and i also love comfy games (animal crossing, minecraft etc.) fall is my favorite season + i'm addicted to iced coffee and the white monster (only flavor i've ever had but extremely caffeine dependent) i love reading and writing n also photography. the sound of rain and the look of snow falling make me really happy. my comfort drink is either earlgrey tea with milk and sugar (maybe honey too) or a big cup of hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream.
