Pink. Sparkles. Lip gloss. Those were the only thoughts running through Spencer's mind as he walked into the break room. Which this was a surprise to him because usually his mind was running a mile a minute--mathematical equations, book references, and case theories. But when you were near that was all reduced to a heaping pile of nothing. Especially now, as you leaned casually against the counter, in pink pumps and matching skirt that definitely wasn't up to the dress code, but he wasn't sure if you cared.
Cradled between your hands was a white mug, its side inscribed with the words 'Britney survived 2007. You can handle today' in stark black letters. He had no idea what it meant, but he noticed it was your favorite, a staple in your daily routine, unless it found its way to the top self, an inconvenience Spencer would subtly always rectify when he went to pour his own cup.
The focal point of his attention, however, was your lips, more precisely, the sheer layer of shimmering gloss that clung to them. Words were forming on those same lips, presumably directed at him, but they seemed to dissolve before reaching his ears, his gaze transfixed by the glistening movement of your mouth.
"Huh?"
With a smile, you pressed your glittering lips together and took a step in his direction. He managed to clear his throat, trying to redirect his attention to your eyes, but his gaze remained helplessly planted.
"I swear, half my routine is just reapplying this stuff after every sip," you said while your thumb worked diligently to wipe away the sparkling smudge from the mug.

"Oh, sorry, well, lip gloss is made of oils and waxes that give it that shiny appearance. However, these ingredients don't fully absorb to your skin, so when you press your lips against something, like a hot coffee cup, the excess transfers over."
Heat suffused his face as he registered the unwavering attention you afforded him, as if you were hanging on his every syllable. He sensed your struggle to comprehend, but your effort was evident. He really liked having your attention.
"So, with all that brainpower, do you have any tips for keeping my gloss on my lips instead of my mug?"
"Maybe a straw?"
Your laughter was like music to his ears, filling his senses as your hand, perfectly manicured, lightly touched his arm. A rush of warmth flooded his neck, and he looked at you, momentarily lost for words, as you murmured, "I'll try that out, thanks, Dr. Reid."
"Spencer," he corrects.
"Right, well, thank you, Spencer," you said, standing on tiptoes to plant a kiss on his cheek, before twirling on your heels, your smile lingering in the air.
Spencer could feel the stickiness on his skin, his fingers pressing against the spot you had left, feet glued to the ground. He starting to think he really likes lip gloss.

Written for the @summer-of-bad-batch prompt, "It's not what you think." Crosshair and Wrecker visit the Armory in Aftermath.

“C’mon, let’s make this quick. Hunter’s going to need us back soon,” Crosshair said.
“Yeah, yeah, he can wait,” Wrecker scoffed, leading them on the familiar path to the armory. “But how long’s it been since we’ve been back? They could have all sorts of new stuff here! New Empire, new stuff, aren’t you excited?”
Crosshair scoffed. “How long have we been soldiers, Wrecker? Don’t you think we’ve seen it all?”
He stood corrected.
The Empire meant business. He and Wrecker wandered through the aisles of the armory in a daze. Crosshair grabbed new smart explosives for his Firepuncher and a box full of upgraded mirror pucks, with improved adhesive and a fifteen-percent more reflective surface. He couldn’t wait to use these. He smirked around the toothpick in his mouth, thinking of Wrecker’s crestfallen face when he’d taken out that hallway of battle droids.
But there was plenty here for Wrecker, too. Crates of ordnance towered high above them, droids hovering up and down along the endless stacks, adding more every moment. Wrecker peered at the Aurebesh stats stamped on the side of the closest crate, his eyebrows jumping halfway up his forehead with delight. “Cross! Do you see the blast radius on these? Oh-ho-ho!” He grabbed a passing droid by the arm from the air above them, and it let out a squawk as Wrecker hauled it down. “C’mon, give me one of these.”
“These are extremely dangerous explosives. I require clearance of the highest --” the droid sputtered until Crosshair waved their upgraded clearance in its face. “Very well,” the droid sniffed. It pulled a crate down from a tower ten meters high and dropped it off in front of Wrecker on a cart. He ripped the lid open, staring at the thermal detonators, half again as large as the ones he usually used.
“Just think of it, Crosshair. We could give those clankers one helluva fireworks show!” He sniffed, wiping at his eyes. “It’s gonna be something. I can’t wait!”
“Assuming it’s even clankers,” Crosshair said, the kid on Kaller running through his head. He rubbed his right temple, frowning at the pulsing ache in his head. It’d been bothering him all day. He winced, his eyes stinging with a sudden flash of pain, and he rubbed the extra moisture from them surreptitiously.
“Wait a minute, are you crying?” Wrecker asked in disbelief, apparently not noticing the giddy tears on his own cheeks.
“It’s not what you think!” Crosshair snapped. “It’s -- it’s just dust in my eye. But what about you? You look like a baby who got a new toy.”
Wrecker sniffed again, wiping his face. “Hey, just ‘cause you’ve never experienced joy, doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t know how.” He grinned. “C’mon. Let’s go show off.”
Crosshair sighed. “All right. But I wasn’t crying.”
“Surrrrrre you weren’t, Cross.”

Sticky Situation- Part 7
Part 6
Hero came to just as Scientist dispensed the expanding foam into their pod. Hero let out a muffled groan, not all the way lucid. Expanding sealant had been stuffed in their mouth, which had then been sealed shut with adhesive and thermal tape. Scientist stood in front of them, their arms folded across their chest.
"Hopefully you learn your lesson," Scientist said, tapping the glass, "your entire body has been wrapped in thermal tape for good measure."
Hero wasn't alert enough to care. Along with expanding foam, mild sleeping gas was being pumped into their pod at regular intervals.
Hero stayed that way for days, only being let out of the pod for bathroom breaks and intravenous meals. They were always too drowsy to make any escape attempts.

Hero dozed in their pod, drifting in and out of sleep. They heard someone tapping on the glass. Hero forced their heavy eyes to open. Assistant stared back at them. They pressed a button on the side of the pod, and the sleeping gas dissipated.
"Hm?"
"Shh," Assistant shushed.
Hero closed their eyes, asleep once more. Assistant dispensed solvent into the pod, and the foam melted away. Hero collapsed against the glass, their soft snores muffled by the gag. Assistant opened the pod door and caught Hero as they tumbled out. They lowered them down to the floor.
"Wake up," Assistant said, slapping them.
"Mm!"
Hero looked up at Assistant, who was working on freeing them from their tape restraints.
"I'm gonna take the gag off," Assistant whispered, "but you have to stay quiet, okay?"
Hero nodded, not entirely sure what was going on.
Assistant tore the tape off of Hero's mouth, then removed the adhesive and the sealant. Hero flexed their jaw subconsciously.
"We have to go, come on," Assistant said, hoisting them up.
Hero leaned on Assistant, still quite drowsy.
"Hero, we don't have time for this," Assistant groaned quietly, "ugh, I guess it's my own fault... whatever, here."
Assistant dragged Hero over to the padded table. They laid Hero down on it and draped a sheet over them.
"Okay, uh, don't move or make any noise," Assistant said, "let's hope this works..."
Assistant began to wheel Hero out of their room. Hero drifted back off without a clue as to what was happening.

When Hero awoke next, they were lying on a couch in a small living room. They sat up, confused as to how they got here. They turned when they heard footsteps behind them.
"Oh," Assistant said, "you're awake."
Assistant carried a tray in their hands. Hero eyed Assistant suspiciously.
"Is this some old psychology trick that I'm supposed to fall for?" Hero asked.
"No!" Assistant said quickly, "no tricks, I swear! You're uh, you're at my apartment."
"...Why?" Hero asked, raising an eyebrow.
Assistant didn't answer. They crossed the room until they were in front of Hero. They awkwardly set the tray in their lap. There was a bowl of soup and a few bread rolls, along with a cup of water.
"Uh... you haven't actually eaten anything in days..." Assistant said, "I thought you might want real food."
Hero stared down at the tray. The food looked good... too good. Almost like it would be laced with something bad.
"I don't know how gullible you think I am, but I'm not about to let you drug me... again."
Assistant winced at Hero's words. Hero felt a little bad, but not enough to take it back.
"I'm sorry for what happened in Supervillain's office," Assistant said, "I... I shouldn't have drugged you. I was scared, I didn't want to get in trouble. Supervillain's given me everything-"
"Yeah, including a frozen lab rat to play with," Hero said coldly.
Assistant withdrew into themselves.
"I promise this isn't a trick, I got you out of Organization's facility, and you're in my apartment now."
Hero scanned the room. It certainly looked like an apartment. But it could easily be a facade. Hero carefully set the tray on a coffee table and stood up. They were just about to make a run for it when they heard a knock on the door. Assistant's face went pale.
"Hide, quick!" Assistant whispered.
Assistant grabbed Hero by the arm and dragged them into a bedroom, shoving them in a closet.
"Don't move, and stay quiet," Assistant said, quickly shutting the closet door.
The knocking continued, and Hero could hear Assistant rushing to the front door.
"Coming, coming!" they called.
Hero strained to listen. They heard the door open.
"Assistant," Supervillain said, "I was so worried about you. I looked all over the facility for you."
"Supervillain," Assistant replied, surprise in their tone, "I-I'm sorry. I wasn't feeling well, so I came home early. What's wrong?"
"Hero has escaped."
Hero blinked. So... this really was Assistant's apartment then?
"Oh gosh," Assistant said, "when? How?"
"The security systems were disabled," Supervillain explained, "and the CCTV wiped. We have no idea how they managed it."
"I'm sorry, Supervillain, I know you really needed them..."
Assistant is good, Hero thought, they should've went to acting school.
"Not to worry, dear cousin, I have all the information I need for Organization to begin developing a cryo-serum."
"Really? That's, uh, that's great!"
"Yes. Soon I'll have everything I need to be successful."
Hero heard the front door open.
"I hope you feel better soon," Supervillain said, "I'll see you at work."
With that, the door closed. Within minutes, Assistant had ran back to the closet and opened the door for Hero.
"You need to get out of the city," Assistant said, dragging Hero out, "come eat your food and I'll get set up travel arrangements."
"Assistant-"
"I can give you my bus pass, you can't go back to your place, we've got it bugged-"
"Assistant-"
"Of course, we may have no choice if we wanna get your passport, how do you feel about Siberia?"
"Assistant!"
"What?" Assistant asked.
Hero sat down on the couch and grabbed the tray of food.
"Let me eat, we need a plan if we're gonna stop Supervillain."
"Stop Supervillain?" Assistant paused, "yeah that sleeping gas must still be in your system, no one can stop my cousin."
Hero dipped a bread roll into their soup. They took a bite and almost cried. It was absolutely delicious, and the best part- it wasn't coming from a needle!
"We're gonna have to try," Hero said, "I can't let Supervillain replicate my powers."

Supervillain returned to their office. They had given Hero and Assistant the bait, now it was just a matter of waiting for them to bite.

Lunch in Space (Part 3)
You always hear about these people who have EVA accidents and they tell you how laser-focused they were, in maintaining a cool and calm demeanour so they could follow the old Observe, Analyse, React model.
Which jsut goes to show how tricky memory is because the suit recordings all start the same way mine did:
Sound: [Bang] Sound: [AAaaaaAAAAAaaaaAAAAaaaa! F***! S***!]
Look, it's confusing. You start by sort of floating in your suit thinking about those little purple rolls they serve in the Caf, and then everything is spinning and it feels like your legs are being pinched.
Ever had a blood pressure test? It feels like that, from your feet all the way to your hips. It's to make sure all the blood doesn't get centrifuged out of your brain.
Then you dig your thumbs into the little slot with the emergency buttons and push down until they decide you really mean it and then the auto-compensators stop you from spinning.
Then you start looking for leaks. Oscar, or whatever you named your suit will tell you right away. I had a small leak, easily repaired with Space Tape once I yanked a chunk of crud out of the way. There was a big gash in the impact plate that is part of Oscar's outermost layer. It's designed to distribute an impact and be somewhat ablative. the tip of some debris had gone all the way through and nicked the inner layer.
Space Tape has vacuum-rated adhesive, is shiny as heck and after I spudged some sealant into the gash, the tape went over the top as both insurance and a way to indicate to any rescue party that there was a potential yadda yadda. Look, you've done the safety course.
Step 2: Orient and Bitch.
Easy enough. Half a turn to the left and yo, there's the station. Or a little green box around the fuzzy little cloud of navigation hazard.
"Oscar, calculate return vector, and current free orbit." said I.
Oscar thinks about that, does a whole bunch of range-finding, math, and parallax, and then tells me that if I totally empty my tanks I can do pretty much nada about catching back up.
The docking frame took the impact instead of e.g. pretty much all the stuff that was keeping me alive right now: A quick read on the sun suggests that's the cooling unit at the moment. The station was already a little dot, twinkling in a pretty way as it vanished into the endless night.
The emergency kit has a spring wire thermal blanket in it. I tethered one corner to Oscar, and let it unfold, putting it between me and the sun. Also now I just made myself way easier to track. Like I needed that? If we were down to only RADAR or looking for shiny crap, we weren't going to make it anyway.
I think they make these checklists boring so you won't have anxiety about falling into infinite space with some tape covering the hole in your life support system while clamped to a bent out-of-shape utility lift, while hiding behind a couple of grams of plastic sprayed with metal vapour.
I mean it's not the first time. It's just the first time it wasn't a training exercise.
Elapsed time: About 5 minutes. Check in time. Station was loud and clear five bars, waiting for me to call in: "Station, this is Delta Zeta on impact trajectory calling in an untethered excursion. Systems are yellow, Stellar shield is deployed. Currently encumbered by the docking stanchion and lift plate. Pilot is green. I have a controlled outgassing event. Please advise. Over."
Station responds right away, so hey they're all still there too, meaning the communications are up and they aren't busy getting Kesslered. Good To Know™️. "Delta Zeta, this is EVA command. We read a trailing orbit. You're green for Three Eight, period five hours. We read Life Support for One Four, no obstacles. We are currently leading a large volume of navigational hazard. At this time we recommend waiting for safety intercept leading approach. Do you copy, Over?"
I consider this like there's an actual choice. "I copy Station: Big cloud of crap behind you, five hours until you sneak up on my sorry ass. Be advised that I will not be picking up a pizza while out. Over"
Station comes back: "Be advised that lack of pizza may result in a lower recovery priority. Over."
So yeah. They just said they had too much shit floating around behind them to safely get a rescue drone out, and I'm moving away from them.
In five hours their orbit will bring them up behind me, where the debris field isn't and they can pick me up. I have power and air to try this twice, and if they miss I have thirty-eight orbits before I'll de-orbit. Given that I have fourteen hours before my power or air runs out and I either cook, freeze or suffocate, that part isn't something I need to worry about.
"Grak!" I say. Oscar's little icon does a couple of colour and pattern changes: A blush at the use of profanity, Atrix style.
"Copy that." Station says. Oops. Hot mic.
"See you in five. Over and out." I say and put a movie on. I pick Gravity, the re-make they actually shot in Earth Orbit, not the Atrix version. I have a sick twisted sense of humour.
I'd jsut got to the good bit with the Indian Space Station, when my stellar shield suddenly jerked and flipped around, a little hole punched through it. Then another and another.
Around that point something hit my life support and things got really distracting...

What is your favorite seal? Comment below!
Part of this blog's goal is to educate people about the different kinds of seals, so if you aren't sure read on and pick a favorite!
Water based Latex Popular for residential use because of the ease of application and ability to adhere to most substrates. These can be painted on and are suitable for situations where gaps / voids are very small and movement is minimal. Latex is can be prone to shrinkage and can pull away from the substrate creating gaps, allowing water to penetrate. You will often find water based latex seals in freshwater such as Lake Ladoga or Baikal.
Acrylic These are UV stable making them suitable for exterior applications, and are not prone to shrinkage. Acrylics can be difficult to apply and cannot accommodate significant movement. Contrary to popular belief, acrylic seals don't actually eat crabs!
Butyl Adheres well to a broad variety of substrates but can be hard to apply due to their stringier consistency. They have poor resistance to abrasion and struggle to accommodate movements that introduce shearing forces. They are not suitable for demanding building applications. You can find them across all of the islands of Hawaii, but don't get close because they're endangered!
Polysulfide Excellent flexibility even at low temperatures with little shrinkage or UV degradation, and can be used for underwater applications. Polysulfides are more expensive than similar sealants and have a tendency to have higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Though, a life expectancy of 10 to 20 years does compensate for the price somewhat. When most people think of seals, these arctic animals with their fuzzy white babies are in the top three!
Silicone Has excellent thermal resistance, good dynamic movement capability and good adhesion. They can be easily vandalised and tend to collect dirt. For certain substrates (such as stone), staining may also be an issue, in some cases making the use of primers a necessity. As weather proofing and air sealing applications silicones can be used structurally e.g. for bonding glass or metal to frames. Silicones are generally the most expensive but quality silicones have very good durability performance. These seals are often seen along the shores of La Jolla beach.
Polyisobutylenes Have similar properties to natural rubber but with improved durability, good resistance to chemical attack, and have very low permeability. These are commonly used as the primary seal for insulating glazing units (IGU) as they are capable of resisting the transmission of vapour and gases. The products are normally factory applied, rather than site applied. You can find Polyisobutylene seals all over the world, and they are the origin of Selkies!
Polyurethane Adhere well to the majority of different surfaces with little substrate preparation, and are generally the go-to choice for contractors. They have excellent resilience to abrasion and shear forces as well as having strong adhesion and movement capability. When male seals of this type reach maturity they gain a scent similar to gasoline! In fact, Ponsuke is a polyurethane seal!
No singular seal is universally superior or inferior to another. Some are simply better at certain applications than others are due to their innate physical and chemical properties. But we all have our favorites!
