Book mail from @bookofthemonth ! I’ll be honest, because I am so bad at keeping up with my unread books AND have run out of shelf space, I don’t keep a subscription very long. What enticed me to go back is wanting an edition of The Rules of Magic to match with my copy of Practical Magic (which I got from the BOTM). HOWEVER, there are so many interesting books on their lists like my pick for this month, Thistlefoot by @_gennarose_ which I’m excited to get to… eventually 😅 I’m a sucker for retold, reinvented, and classic folk tales, fairy tales, legends, and the like. The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman (5 Stars!) Have you read any of the books in the Practical Magic series? Which one is your favorite? The story follows Franny and Jet, the two aunt's from Practical Magic, and surprisingly their mysterious brother, Vincent. He's the only male in the Owens line which makes him unique and all the more curious. The book is set during the 1960s mostly and a bit in the 70s in New York City and of course at the Owens home in Massachusettes where they visit their own aunt who lives alone there. All their lives they were told there was no magic and that they were an ordinary family, but when Franny turns 16 her estranged aunt invites her to stay at her historic home per Owens tradition. Franny, Jet, and Vincent pack their bags and have their world changed that summer. As in most Hoffman books, and especially in the Practical Magic series, love is at the center. These Owenses are cursed just like all the others and they have their share of tragedy when it comes to relationships. It was beautifully written. I love how Alice Hoffman gives just enough detail to let my mind run wild with it. I’ve read the book thrice and watched the movie like, a billion times! LOL. So I felt that today would be an auspicious day to try out this particular recipe. With tonight’s multiple celestial occurrences happening, a full lunar eclipse resulting in a Blood Moon, and Mars being in opposition to Earth, I decided to make a version of the Tipsy Chocolate Cake found in both of @ahoffmanwriter books ‘The Rules of Magic’ and ‘Practical Magic’. You know, that awesome, creepy, witchy movie starring Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman? It's actually based on a book written by @ahoffmanwriter and The Rules of Magic is its prequel! I haven't read Practical Magic yet but I have a feeling as soon as I finish this I will most definitely want to! This book is all about families, curses and witches! Sold!!
