A list of some spaces I’ve been reading up on queer history, culture, and politics -- spaces like researchgate are also gold mines if you’re doing more specific research, but the below are easy to navigate if you want to go down rabbit holes, look for sources, gain hitherto unknown perspectives, etc.

A lot of these are very guerilla, a few are more established/have funding -- all of them have stories that have historically been deemed immaterial by colonialist -- and therefore queerphobic -- mainstream societies. I was trying to keep a focus on history, but there’s some question about how we define that -- personal histories? recent histories? histories of media? blog posts that are older than x?

MakingQueerHistory: An amazing site with tons of history, that’s also always looking for writers who want to make additions (I believe currently anyone who’s not writing on America or England is preferred). Queer As Fact: A podcast that explores a range of historical people, places, media, etc. Very enjoyable rabbit holes, and it’s fun to hear as things are being explored and learned [link] (global)

The Intersex Roadshow: I confess I’ve had a hard time finding a dedicated space centering on intersex people and intersex history. However this one has been running since 2009, and before you think that isn’t so long, consider 13+ years of words! West Yorkshire Queer Stories: A series of oral histories from West Yorkshire, interviewing people about Pride, community, personal histories, intersectional rights, etc. Over 200 stories! [link] (local, North England/West Yorkshire)

Queer Music Heritage: I haven’t delved as far into this one as I want (yet), but does exactly what is says on the tin! I can’t even begin to describe how rich this site is, you’ll have to simply experience it [link] (global - may be Western-centric)

To Survive On This Shore: A treasure trove of stories and images of older trans people -- sometimes we’re fooled into thinking that we really don’t have a lot of elders or stories, but we really really do [link] (America)

t4t: A series of articles, essays, and stories about being trans and non-binary, by a variety of writers. the writing includes sex, bodies, divinity, and more and it periodically gets updated [link] (America)

76crimes: This is not an archive as such, but it covers news in countries that criminalised/currently criminalise homosexuality, and so has a lot of information from around the world, both historical and current. Global ally-ship is very very important and so is acknowledging how much homo- and transphobia have been created by colonialism [link] (global)

QueeringTheMap: People placing their personal stories all over the world onto different parts of a map, with little bits of texts -- anything from first kisses, sex, gender affirming surgeries, support, fun, life-changing events, etc. [link] (global)

The Smithsonian: The LGBTQ+ section of the Smithsonian covers articles on history and culture [link] (I believe global)

Gay History and Literature: So this historian called Rictor Norton just has this website where he uploaded a flipping ton of his writings. It’s mainly threw a gay male lens, but he allows himself to bloom out into lesbian, bi, and trans history here and there. So worth a looong exploration. I first stumbled on it, because he has a whole section dedicated to a history of guys writing each other love/sexual letters. First thoughts from just one watch under shitty circumstances with bad internet and worse sound:

RAMBLING FRANK vs RUSSIA THOUGHTS

I was very worried about this episode with how sacred the S5 DENNIS System episode is to us all. Didn't want a Thunder Gun 4 situation on our hands and thankfully they avoided it so hard! I think having the plot with Charlie, Frank, the mums, Uncle Jack and chess really helped out to make it feel more than a direct sequel.

SINNED -> DENNIS -> SINNED -> DENNIS — I'm so impressed with this. How did I, a wholeass Sunny fan, miss this for so long?! Three cheers to whoever came up with that inversion, really! Definitely something that happened in the writer's room and made everyone lose their shit for sure. I wonder who it was, could be Meg or another writer too, given how collaborative they all are!

And can I just say, Dennis the Restaurant Manager... oh how I love you so much! The Waitress is Getting Married is a personal favourite of mine and I wasn't expecting a bit of a redux of that whole situation.

I was so worried about all the "Mac getting a boyfriend and it being Ryan Reynolds" theories and I absolutely wanted none of that. Everyone had speculated it to death and it wouldn't have been fun anymore (not to mention I do not care for RR in my Sunny, I'm sure he's fine, but I don't need his and Rob's PR relationship filtering through into my dickandball show no I don't "find them cute" and I won't elaborate here anymore).

I know we'd guessed that Johnny could've been Dennis catfishing Mac, but it definitely felt like we were doing an Insane Fan Speculation more than anything — and for it to turn out to be correct! And in the best way, because we never could've seen the vibrating anal beads coming!! That's the best kind of "called it but it's still unpredictable".

It really broke my mind, this episode did. And don't even get me started on the Macdennis and queer Dennis of it all! As a longtime believer in Bisexual Dennis, I won so hard! All of us Queer Dennis Truthers won so fucking hard!

[Unpopular Take incoming] This is the first Sunny episode credited to Meg for writing that has felt so wholly "Classic Sunny" and super fuckin hilarious to me. I always appreciated her understanding of the characters and she's always a very solid writer, but this is the first time where I felt myself thinking ok, you she write RCG/Hornsby/Marder-Rosell/Chernins-level of an insane chaotic Sunny episode with multiple belly laughs and not just slightly Community-fied versions of the gang.

The closest her writing has felt like true Sunny to me before this was Dee Day, so I'm glad to see her grow and improve too, and I wonder if the podcast rewatch has helped in that regard! Must also help to have a classic S5 structure to play off in The D.E.N.N.I.S. System! (And ofc writing is collaborative, so well done to RCG and all the writers who pitched ideas and rewrites that ended up shaping this episode!)

I knew Heath Cullens directing meant a good chance of some interesting camerawork (and I've gotta say that even The Gang Inflates had some more dynamic shots than we've been getting in some of the later years and it's got to be the Cullens directing), but I wasn't expecting a whole visual callback to Being Frank! Loved it.

And the editing! The DENNIS System has always been great for cutaway gags and fun little inserts, so I loved seeing that carried out here with the cuts to Mac and Dee fucking up their dates and then finally pulling out the Magic Tissue of Mummy Issues (oh the potential for meta especially with the twins!). The pacing was so good!

Sunny pacing needs to feel like Mac crashing Dee's car into a wall while we are all Charlie watching it in real time and screaming when it's over.

If Daniel knows something and is so vocal about it, why would Helmut Marko say he is not close to Checo and Max yet? Like its the opposite reaction to what Horner and Daniel are saying. And from what I read Helmut actually likes Daniel and said they remained in contact the last few years and by his interviews he isnt quit fond of Checo most times, so why say the opposite to Christian about Daniels sim time?

ok interesting point!! i'm gonna say although helmut and christian seem to disagree with each other they don't necessarily contradict. here's why

reason #1: according to the On The Race Australian GP Review Podcast even within Redbull there "seems to be some disagreement as to who’s faster out of DR and Perez between different people/camps". so it's not out of ordinary at all that helmut and christian have disagreements on this subject too. but the fact that there had even been this kind of disagreements in the first place shows that daniel's pace can't have been far off checo's, if not matching. which brings me to my

reason #2: while helmut was talking about the numbers on paper, christian may be talking about trajectory. think about this. daniel has been out of a redbull for FOUR years. and while other drivers (checo) have been training non stop and watching their diet and alcohol intake meticulously etc, daniel has been like, having ALL kinds of fun around the world like the young rich eligible good looking 33 yo that he is. off the top of my head he has been doing talk shows and going to the met gala in ny. clubbing with scotty in vegas for like a week straight. filming with redbull's crew in LA. running around with scotty in uk and australia. attending the wedding in venice. going to race tracks somewhere in the us southwest. so on so forth. and again this is FOUR years after he was last in a red bull. imagine daniel turned up in milton keynes after a wild week with scotty in vegas and then immediately matched checo's pace in the sim. like. that's not realistic? what's realistic is that even if his sim times aren't completely matching checo's right now, he's been on such a positive trajectory that apparently 1. christian is saying "daniel is 10 minutes away from being race ready" 2. daniel wants to come back to this sport 3. it is apparently possible that daniel may be able to race for red bull next year that he's keeping this convo going in the interviews.

to sum up!!! even within rbr ppl from diff camps are having disagreements on who's faster between dr and sp, and even if daniel's sim pace isn't matching checo's (which it might still be bc we all know helmut marko isn't always the best source of info), his sim performances must've been on a strong trajectory

okay so all of these are taken from diff episodes, sometimes i clarify sometimes i don't, had so much fun listening to the paywalled episodes, that podcast has become my jam so fast. anyways here are the tidbits, enjoy!

they started sing alongs at one point where will was singing and qt picks a random word from his singing to sing a different song but before they were able to do that, austin sneezed hella hard and they all started clowning him

austin: your brother and i have a special bond (talking to hasan about murat)

  qt: i don't even know if he likes you to be completely honest

at the end of an episode, hasan's dad randomly slides the door open a little bit while wearing his bathing suit and hasan scolds him in turkish immediately while everyone dies laughing, took me out personally, had to rewind that moment so many times

 the "electric chair drop" episode is golden and the paywalled version is even more so bc the first half is just random unhinged sex talk and the second half is chaotic chill where hasan and will are messing with their ears with instacarted meds while austin blasts italian music, i couldn't stop laughing

austin wanting to be in one of qts shows/plays and his pitch is "lights, camera, *pause followed by dramatic flailing of hands* austin show" with will and qt giggling at that proposal

i love moments whenever will is exasperated with austin or qt and he just turns to hasan with the wtf look at his face and hasan sighs like an old man and rolls his eyes (not restricted to the paywall, happens a lot as is but still worth mentioning)

will pointing the "gun" at qt and qt holding up her toy otter in return and hasan yelling "NOT THE OTTER" 

austin randomly fixing his hair and looking at his reflection on his phone while hasan is walking around making sure little kaya doesn't make a mess and looks at austin and goes "wHat are you doing?? wHat is he doing??" while being in a disappointed dad stance

qt talks about a challenge she had on a streamer camp: get out and earn as much money as you can like selling water bottles, lemonade stand, etc. this convo ensues:

will: how would you guys make money on a street if you had to?

austin: i would just start sucking dick

hasan: you went there SO FAST WTF

cue everyone laughing and hasan having the dissapointed dad stare hehe

austin drops the fake gun on his crotch and hasan IMMEDIATELY goes "you deserve it"

austin calling ludwig and asks if he can suck his dick

 random but i love whenever will laughs quietly and tries to hide his laughter by hiding his face in his shirt, it's so cute lol (also not restricted to the paywall)

honestly in the nutshell, you pay $5 to see all of them munch every episode, it's like a mukbang podcast without intending to be a mukbang podcast, it's so funny

in the anniversary episode, austin and hasan went down the slide that was the background with will chanting "RIDE THE SLIDE" obv hasan looked comically huge on the little slide hehe (while wearing sunglasses while going down the slide, obv very fashionable of him)

also kaya being present during that episode for all good of 11 minutes was so sweet, i love that dog a lot

Anon about the memoir

at first when she said that statement i was like damn gotta learn PR training from her cause that’s a genius answer haha. like if u wanna know anything u gotta wait for the memoir (which may never come lol but i ain’t gonna tell u anything rn haha).

i def agree that the fact that it seems that since she gives weight to both those relationships indicates that they rly were significant in many ways.

i think when she was with AB early on the ONLY serious relationship b4 that was Zac i think bec the zanessa sentiment was sooo strong that bec of respect to AB i feel like she didn’t mention zac for a while. i mean even zac didn’t bec it was v fresh.

but then around i think 2016 or smth when she mentioned him as her teen celeb crush was one of the times i remember being like oh oks she’s comf now talking about him.

then in 2019 when that podcast came out i think that’s when it seemed that she was reflecting on relationshps a bit more and really appreciating zac’s presence and as she said was super grateful for that relationship.

(even in 2019 zac did the bbc interview etc and pointed out vanessa, even in hot ones he mentioned kenny like i think he got comf talking about all of that too.)

then in 2020 with her insta live, posting memes and drew barrymore, kelly clarkson and then jay shetty i now feel that she feels comf talking about him and sees that time in her life as a happy time which makes me happy. even with zac following - i think they’re in a good space and can honestly see a reunion being really special for them. (not about us but just them!)

also a) i genuinely think she’s ok with talking about that side of her life. She knows it’s a big part of her life - ppl will always ask her about hsm and the cast (esp zac) and i think she’s embraced it in a good way.

b) i feel like she def finds it easier to talk about him (bec he was linked to hsm, diff expereinces like travel and tour/ growing up etc) than AB bec it’s fresh ofc and also bec they were only in a relationship together. maybe she’d mention him talking about her experiences in general over those years but i don’t see that happening for a while. needs some time for sure.

Bright and Nonkul's insane preparation for I Feel You Linger In The Air - An Appreciation Post

Yesterday, Bright and Nonkul went on World of Y Podcast to promote the series and my dear friend Salt on Twitter (huge thank you and shoutout to her) has kindly provided brief translations for their Podcast episode. I'm compiling some of the most interesting tidbits from this Podcast to once again appreciate the efforts and dedication both actors have for their respective roles.

1. Bright's journey to being casted as Khun Yai

For Bright, he was actually contacted by Director P'Tee and Producer P'Boss numerous times (for other projects) but at those times, the timing just didn't work out well for Bright.

For IFYLITA, P'Tee contacted Bright's manager, P'Pear who asked Bright if he wanted to act in this. Bright asked for some time to do his homework and he asked his friends who are into BL novels and series to help him check IFYLITA out. And after 2-3 days, his friend got back to him to tell him that it's actually really good. Bright didn't say that he was gonna play Yai but he just said that he might act in this series. But his friend asked him if Bright would be playing Yai because when they read it, they felt that Bright could really be Yai.

So Bright went on Youtube to watch the spoiler-ish book review videos. He saw that IFYLITA was actually super interesting and so he went to purchase the novel to read, before accepting the role. (Bright spoke about this story before)

2. Nonkul on the challenges of portraying Jom and how he has prepared for the series

Nonkul says one of the challenges he face was how to portray Jom's femininity without being too much. Nonkul said he was used to playing more masculine roles and so, this was a heavier part of his homework. And he already knew that this storyline was a challenge in itself but the series still makes him making me want to act in it -- time travel, period drama.

It was Nonkul's experience and training as an experienced actor that helped him find the sweet spot when it came to expressing Jom's femininity

In reference to Jom's femininity, Nonkul used the women in his life as references (his sisters, diff actresses). He also had a male senior who's LGBT+ whom he observed and adapted for Jom's role.

Nonkul sees being actor as being an athlete but in terms of expressing personality, setting the mood and speaking. They need to train their bodies to be able to do these things without getting tired as an athlete does in their sport. As they are more familiar with their bodies, they can observe and adjust the way they act accordingly. It's similar to dancers who've trained all their lives being able to replicate a dance upon seeing it once.

The MC remarked that in the novel, we can see Jom's thoughts and feelings very obviously whereas in the series, Jom isn't as communicative about his thoughts and feelings

Nonkul says that we need to remember that in the novel, we can see all of Jom's thoughts and feelings really clearly vs the series. In series, it's impossible for Jom to be stating his feelings out in black and white like that. So there's a need to design the character in such a way that they could get the archetype of Jom across as efficiently as possible. While Jom in the novel and series may not be exactly the same, Nonkul feels that the series still captures the essence of Jom pretty well.

Nonkul also felt like he had to lose some weight to fit the idea of Jom in his head. He lost about 3kg but he had intended for about 5-6kg. He couldn't do it as he was filming 4 other series at that time. Nonkul couldn't lose too much weight because for 2 of his other series that was filming at the same time, he needed to be more masculine and muscular (Remember and The Office Games iirc). So it wasn't possible to lose that much weight. Nonkul needed to be fair not to affect his other work but also try to look as close as novel Jom's visuals. Nonkul lost weight by eating only one meal a day and not eating that much.

3. On Bright and Nonkul's hectic schedule in between filming of IFYLITA

The filming duration was long because Nonkul was filming 4 series concurrently and Bright was filming 3 concurrently and there were scheduling issues. But this also allowed them to spend more time with each other and make his speech more natural too. Bright says that the problems that they encountered was really nothing to do with acting but more about logistics like clashing schedules, equipment...

Bright and Nonkul also spoke a lot about being very in sync when working together (helping each other with camera blocking, tacit shared understanding/vision for scenes together,...)

4. On Bright's preparation for the role of Khun Yai

Bright says that he's usually a person who speaks really fast so to become Khun Yai, he made an effort to slow down his speech in daily life. Bright also said he made an effort to pronounce his 'r' sounds more clearly. (T/N: You will notice many Thai people today don't pronounce 'r' sounds or they just replace it with 'l' sounds (B does the latter often in his natural speech)

The way tones are executed in Thai today and in the past is slightly different. So when Bright watched the pilot they shot, he realised that he needed to make some changes to his speech as Yai who is someone who appears very sweet when he talks.

Bright attended a workshop to help with his speech because he was speaking too fast and unclearly. He would also do mouth exercises (a,e,i,o,u etc) while driving. Bright used "olden" language in his daily life to make his speech so convincing in the series. For instance, when he played games with his friends and they were streaming, he'd speak with olden language to practice (see: clip of Bright using "olden" language while playing ROV in this gaming livestream with his friend).

This "olden" way of speaking still sticks with Bright up till today and he sometimes still speaks using some of the olden terms like using chan to refer to himself. Bright thought it was important for him to work on his speech because it would be really obvious if he spoke like today's generation and it would be too similar to the way Jom speaks.

5. On self-rating their portrayals of Jom and Khun Yai in the series

Nonkul gives himself a 7-8/10 for his acting in this series as Jom. He feels that there isn't any way to be a perfect 10, there's always things to improve upon. There's also some scenes which he feels that he could've acted better in.

Bright gives himself a 6-7-8/10 for his performance in this series. He feels that him doing his own homework needs to be coupled with the brief from the directors etc. And he also feels that it'll never be a case of his performance ever being fully perfect too.

With the amount of "homework" they've done for this series, I'm still constantly astounded by the dedication and hardwork both Bright and Nonkul put into crafting their respective characters, Khun Yai and Jom. I really wish both Nonkul and Bright (especially Bright as IFYLITA is Bright's first ever male lead role) in their future projects because one can truly see how passionate and ambitious both actors are from their preparation of the roles.

One major plot point i didn't mention is in episodes 5-6 . The book antagonist , Dash, before being h*mophobic and threatening the teacher Mr hauser with outing him (only in the book, not the podcast) . Before this (In the podcast), he assumed Mr hauser was into highschool girls- which caused him to spy on him, and argue with Robin about it. In the book, he even made similar comment about how Mr Hauser "really likes robin.. too much." In the podcast, Since he assummed robin& the teacher had "that type of relationship" .He yelled at Robin that a teacher doing stuff like that is messed up (only time I agree with Dash) . And Dash mentions how a different teacher "messed up" his girlfriend - after a diff highschool teacher flirted with her . Robin yells at Dash, that Mr hauser isn't like that. Obviously Mr hauser was actually a nice guy. But given all the s4 movies with questionable adults- I have a few ideas of what that whole argument/plot point may foreshadow ...

remus has a valley accent that comes out 10x stronger when he’s at home. alternatively in muggle aus he is from either blackpool or newcastle. actually strong strong blackpool vibes i cannot lie.

james is from around manchester but the posh parts near the countryside, maybe like alderly edge. he’ll identify as a manc but every single person from manchester would laugh in his face at the thought. he probably gets the train once every two weeks to get a boba from the arndale with his friends thinking life simply doesn’t get any cooler.

sirius is from kensington or some shit. when remus takes him home he physically cringes when sirius talks to people around them but also is completely enamoured with his voice when they are alone. he is the only one.
