You know how a lot of these big Victorian houses have seemingly useless railings around windows that are clearly not balconies? Come to find out these sorts of houses were built so that you could close off parts of the house from each other, like if you had guests or were hosting a party or something. But staff still needed to be able to get around so these windows would be large enough that staff could go out one window from one closed off section of the house to the other. It also gave the effect that guests rarely actually saw staff moving around doing day-to-day tasks. And apparently, a lot of these windows had hidden panels that swung out and make it look like the window wasn't there from inside the room
When I heard that, I immediately thought about a lot of modern criticism of older novels books that feature wealthier protagonists, who talk about their isolation and loneliness. I've heard people discussing these protagonists say things like "How can you be lonely when you're surrounded by staff? It must be their sense of class that prevents them from seeing the staff as people who they can socialize with". That is absolutely at play, don't get me wrong. But with the windows in mind and the knowledge that one of the marks of a good staff at the time was to be as unseen as possible, I think it's completely possible that these protagonists, and the real people they represented, really DID feel that they were completely alone in their houses. Not only were all these social structures in place to keep them separate from everyone else in the house, but also these physical structures that further limited interaction. Because we no longer build houses like this and a lot of older surviving houses no longer have this feature, it's a bit of context that modern readers aren't aware of
I think it's really interesting, cause it gives a whole new context to these stories and social life in the period, and also makes me wonder about what other context that we're not aware of when looking at history or fiction from previous time periods that would re-frame our understandings of the event of those times
I fully believe minho took one look at jisung and decided they needed to be in each other's lives Immediately. he couldn't answer changbin's question of why or how they got close because even he doesn't know! they just did! he walked up to jisung one day and made the executive decision that they were now going to be friends and spend time together, simple as that.
meanwhile jisung was losing his fucking mind, asking seungmin who IS that guy. honestly though imagine the prettiest boy you've ever seen in your entire sixteen years on this planet, completely ignoring the fact that you're prickly and introverted and mad at the world, coming up to YOU. saying hi to YOU. taking YOU out to eat. wanting to be YOUR FRIEND.
simon and betty are like. "we're going to make this work no matter what. no matter the cost we're going to try to be together" and the results are terrible for the both of them
ok now LISTEN not to make everything about buddie. but. what if the thing that leaves eddie “feeling isolated” next season is him grappling with & coming to terms with his sexuality or his feelings specifically for buck.
like he could feel isolated and like he doesn’t have anyone to turn to because of his catholic guilt/shame making it something he’s not be comfortable talking about PLUS the fact that he would typically turn to buck about things like this but how do you talk to your best friend about your problems when your problems are that you think you’re in love with him…
steve saying absently on missions “can you hear that?” and getting strange looks and shrugs from the other avengers, and learning that no, they can’t, maybe you’re crazy, and slowly he stops asking. the high pitched buzzing of surveillance equipment, the ringing that explosives leave behind are his alone to bear. and then bucky showing up and one day while steve’s trying to ignore the terrible static coming from some machine, bucky cocks his gun and says “what the fuck hell is that godawful noise?” and the relief, that steve feels, the delirious relief. he’s not crazy, he’s not losing it; bucky can hear it too
trying my hand at some post timeskip zolu (somewhere in the aftermath of fish man island's main events) and ugh. I love them so much they're so fun to write
okay wait laughingstock concept Incoming: so im imagining some of the neighbors (maybe Julie & Frank) noticing that Barnaby & Howdy are a lil fruity, yk yk. and Julie's like damn, i guess we have to play matchmaker here.
so naturally they wind up getting the whole neighborhood involved. everybody's a wingman here. Poppy's dropping hints when Howdy drops off groceries, Wally is constantly asking Barnaby to go get him things from the bodega, etc etc. Howdy and Barnaby are facing this sudden change in town-wide behavior with slight concern and bemusement
eventually - lets say Julie, Sally, and Wally - get Barnaby into the bodega and then abruptly leave like "don't have too much fun without us you two *wink wink nudge nudge*". once they're gone (read: very obviously hiding outside & watching through the window) Barnaby & Howdy turn to each other like:
Barnaby: you think we should tell them we're already married?
Howdy: let them have their fun - they'll figure it out eventually
It's been said before, but the imagery of Count Dracula throwing himself onto a sofa after his mad dash to clear the table and light the candles with the first book he could grab is hilarious.
today's repostober comes with a lot of words. because if i remember correctly i restrained myself from writing an essay at the time i made these. because look. all of the ut cast but especially papyrus belong in the harvest moon 64 world. i don't care if crossovers are cringe (are they? no don't answer because i really don't care). these are my two favorite video games and they go together like pb and j.
anyway first we have papyrus drinking water after water after water at the bar. this is an incredibly time consuming but free way to get unlimited energy to upgrade all your tools to the max on the first night. hypothetically. if you feel like spending. idk......20 hours or so of your life doing it......(he does) (sans does not). because not only is it free as in, costs no in game currency, time stands still inside the bar and in this game time IS MONEY. also "aren't you the healthy one?" is what the bartender says when you order the glass of water and I've only read it about one hundred million times in my life
a weird exploit exists at the horse races in which you can prepare to place an extravagant bet but withdraw it at the last moment. you pay nothing but the game considers the bet placed all the same. so you bet he will figure that out and take advantage of it!! seriously though, i just love the idea of the situation being a bit switched from the way it was in undertale. sans has a bit of a hard time finding his place in this weird surface world. (and yes i think he would stress about bills. what of it.) papyrus somehow finds his way into the hearts of every single person in the village. he is at the top of his game and everyone loves him!!!!!!!
wine glass, empty cans
air maxes and yellow sunglasses
ashtray, cocaine, getting high on the amber wave
kiss her and don't tells, silver tongues, toothache
choke her with a seaview, puff pass and i choked when your smoke got in my eye
bad logic and bad move
those stupid jokes only we know, just act normal
black-and-white film camera, nights like these we’ll remember
you said love was a pretty lie, i will always love you
we held darkness in withheld clouds, i know nobody understands me like you do
you smile at me and say it's time to go, but i don't feel like going home
i would ask, should we just keep driving?
science and edibles, you said grass was a dirty drug
tea with cyborgs, you like to preach with a vodka in your mug
life hacks going viral in the bathroom, i love all the things you know
we stand up tall and beat our chests, jump off the roof, i’m king on a 50-metre road
riot america, we shout some things that we'll regret
you know it’s times like these, passports in footwells, we’re so much happier
hot wax, those songs we wrote, side boob, only we know
you know when i’m with you, hashbrown, egg yolk, i’m so much happier
swimming pool, going deep for the ones who do the same
sit down with a master plan, maple syrup, coffee, pancakes for two
settle in for another heavy one, moka pot, monday, it's all good
waking up to start again, a small concern with how the engine sounds
there's nowhere else that i would rather be
hey you, should we just keep driving?you and me until the end.
Keep Silver Tongues Driving:
mashed lyrics into not-poems, a series (1/?).
I am begging Queen Productions to give a different puzzle company licensing rights because holy shit this was SUCH a bad puzzle to complete.
Like not to be a puzzle snob on the sideblog but the quality is just atrocious here. The cardboard is flimsy and immediately started to peel up, and several pieces look to be discolored around the edges from the glue. The cut is also very standard, which would usually be fine except that there are false fits EVERYWHERE and it's nearly impossible to pull pieces out without damaging them due to the cardboard quality.
I think this is the first time I've been genuinely disappointed about the quality of a Queen product. I'm glad this was a gift so at least I didn't spend my own money on it.
