It's always been getting steadily worse, but the amount of political bots I've been seeing everywhere this year—youtube, tumblr, twitter, news sites—is truly terrifying. Within a few hours of posting, even a 2 minute long clip from a news network (even a tiny local channel!) has hundreds of comments that are almost nothing but bots and bots responding to bots.

Reporting them does nothing anymore and isn't worth it due to the sheer volume, and many websites won't let you block users, so you're stuck with seeing them 24/7.

One thing that's immediately apparent is that pretty much all of these political bots are posting right wing comments (or right wing comments disguised as left wing comments, meant to deter left wing voters from casting their votes).

The Justice Dept. recently released reports showing ongoing Russian interference attempts during this year's election cycle, which are mainly disinformation ops. But they were preaching to the choir, as anyone can see how many political bots are operating right now, and that they're mainly all trying to effect the same thing: a win for Donald Trump in 2024.

I don't have any comforting conclusion to this; I guess all I'm saying is ... you have to be aware of how much disinformation and propaganda is out there. You have to consider the intent behind the posts and comments. You have to check the sources of things and verify the information before taking it to heart (amd before spreading it, please).

But most importantly you have to not let them get to you. The whole point of these election interference campaigns is to mess with people's heads and make them feel they can't trust anything anymore, especially official journalistic institutions and the government itself.

They want their political opposition to drown in a quagmire of uncertainty, fear, and the feeling that no one is on your side and nobody knows or cares what the truth is anymore, so you may as well not bother standing up for your beliefs or trying to fact check anything or convince other people they're being deceived because you are and will be completely overwhelmed by unwavering, rabid opposition.

Do not fucking give in to this shit. Things are not as hopeless as they seem when you're doomscrolling youtube comments and twitter threads. Truth still matters. Love, community, and solidarity are still there to be found if you know how to look.

Do not let these villains steal your certainty, your hope, your conviction. Do not let them isolate you and silence your beliefs. Do not let them convince you voting is pointless.

I frankly sometimes feel like social media has ultimately given a lot of people the illusion of power, while also causing them to become corrupted in a similar way to traditional forms of power, only without any actual power that goes with it. The similarities in their behavior to the latter is disturbing as hell, ESPECIALLY given the horrid behavior of online types the past few months.

I really can't emphasize enough how much of a constructed and artificial environment social media is, especially these days, and especially the Social Media Platform Formerly Known as Twitter, which is still the main avenue by which a lot of people attempt to "do" social justice. Once upon a time, Twitter was a moderately beneficial public communication service because everyone and God was on it and you could therefore get communiques directly from the source, there was a blue-check verification service that actually helped you understand who was real and who was not, and while there were serious and ongoing flaws such as there is when useful public discourse is sacrificed on the Great Altar of Profit, there was at least some attempt to monitor or ban Nazis, white supremacists, bad actors, and eventually Trump himself. All of that changed and/or was directly destroyed when Apartheid Clyde took over and turned it into a revenue-generating service for Russian propaganda, alt-right cranks, bots, and the rest of the Elon Fanclub willing to pay $8 for a meaningless blue checkmark, while trashing the site's guardrails and any other useful features. It basically exists for Elon to fanboy Putin, Trump, white supremacy, his 4chan trolls, and anything else that makes his money (while Mr. Free Speech Absolutist arbitrarily bans anyone who hurts his man-child fee-fees). This is not an unbiased, neutral, or constructive environment to start with. You don't have any certainty about who you're interacting with or who is amplifying your messages, and only a hardcore-radicalized (of whatever persuasion) base of human users remain, while a lot of casual users have left.

As such, if you're basing anything (hypothesis, claim, source, evidence, opinion) on "what everyone on Twitter thinks," that is fatally flawed data to start with. Even at the peak of its popularity, something like 24% of all American adults regularly used Twitter. That still means 76% of the country who doesn't (and the number is larger now as Chucklefuck McGee has continued driving it into the ground). If you're forming your ideas or looking for "what America thinks" just by quoting or relying on the tweets of people who already agree with you, you've done basically nothing and you certainly haven't proved it, you've stunted your own critical thinking skills, and you are selecting from a data source that is already fatally poisoned and limited in any number of ways. Adding to the echo chamber of similar opinions on Twitter is not going to actually influence public policy or make lasting change. Yes, the interns and/or public relations staff of the public figures still on there will probably check the feed every so often and make note of things that come up, but couching it as mindless vitriolic abuse and/or demonstrably nonsensical things is not going to get back to their boss. It will just be ignored and/or given less weight in the limited space available for things that are deemed important enough to actually follow up on/make policy around.

Also, a lot of people saw Trump tweeting insane things at 3am for four years, and somehow decided that was actually how US/American presidential and governmental policy was made, rather than that he was a fucking narcissistic-personality-disorder psychopathic lunatic. But uh, and it should go without saying, it didn't work. Just because Trump posted something absolutely unhinged and announced it was now policy, that doesn't mean it was. Half the time he didn't even do so much as issue an executive order, those can be and regularly are challenged in courts, and so forth, because despite all its flaws, America is not an absolute monarchy where the king can rule by fiat and have it totally done, no questions, the end. That's also why Trump's second term would be even more dangerous than his first. In his first, he was flailing around and yelling on Twitter and not really paying attention to anything. In his second, the administration will be staffed top to bottom with dedicated fascists like the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 people, who have spent the last four years brooding on revenge and drawing up detailed plans to actually co-opt and suborn all the levers, checks, balances, controls, and functions of government directly to Trump's personal will (and/or the outrageously evil people pulling strings behind the scenes, because Trump is now basically a gibbering orange vegetable and the media is still far too beholden to the Biden Old!!! narrative to accurately report this).

In short, another Trump term (God fucking forbid) would be run by the kind of methodical and careful evildoers who know that policy isn't made by tweet, and would act accordingly. That would be much, much harder to remove, counteract, or fix, it would almost certainly lead to the end of American democracy at least for most of our lifetimes, and the repercussions of that would be absolutely terrible. But because we still have people who act like Trump is somehow a preferable option, who think that it's bad that Biden is trying to work through established and long-term channels to make sustainable policy and not just get short-term chuckles from an internet dopamine approval rush, that is the risk we are running from now until November 2024. After that, either way, we'll know for sure: we'll finally have a measure of safety, or we will be comprehensively fucked for generations. We all have the power to influence which of those outcomes come to pass. I suggest we use it.

hmm I've talked before about my attitude toward book piracy --which the shorthand version is: I can't stop people and I recognize that *some* people in other countries have no other access to the books, and also that many people who pirate them never have any intention of buying them anyway, so stopping the piracy is not a huge concern of mine. Also I offer free/cheap books all over the place. (And the person asking, in Russian, for a copy of my ebook on one of those sites like, if you are in Russia and risking whatever the punishment is to read my stupid romances, then I am not going to kick up a fuss oh my god)

But there is a difference, a big one, between people sharing an ebook with their friends, or even people risking their computers over sketchy download sites to dl a book just for themselves, and the people who a) proudly tell authors to their faces that they pirate their books in a manner that suggests they think they are sticking it to The Man, b) people putting an author's ebooks onto pirate sites and then *asking for donations for their hard work (the fucking audacity), c) the people on my Patreon, who get access to my books before they go on sale elsewhere, and all I ask of them is that, if they do share my ebooks with others, to not tell me and to please at least do it AFTER my book is widely released so it doesn't affect my sales ranking at Amazon (and Amazon's promotion of it), only for me to then see my books on pirate sites BEFORE they are released (that hurt. that hurt bad), and d) the people who claim to be fans of authors who put those authors' KU-exclusive books up on download sites which the Amazon bots think are sites publishing the book, thus breaking the Amazon-exclusive KU agreement--which Amazon punishes the author for by removing their Amazon accounts (and keeping their money) entirely.

From what I could gather, Half Life Zone is a utility pack for Half Life 2002. I can't find this anywhere online except for one post on archive.org. The "game" is actually avaliable to download and play, although it's all in Russian, and only displays clickable text boxes like the ones shown above.

When translated via google translate, the description of the post reads; "Everything you need to live in the Half-Disintegration period! The way you only show an interest in nonwhite characters if they can be shipped with a white character is truly disturbing. Not only that, when you do write them you clearly see them as nothing more than stereotypes. We have Chakotay as the noble savage, B’Elanna as Tom’s “exotic” wife, and Harry who you constantly infantilize and desexualize. Seriously, are you brain damaged or do you just not think racism is a serious issue?

I'll make you a deal, P/T Anon: direct me to which of my fics and which scenes/dialogue/description specifically are supporting these tropes and I will fix those. I am willing to concede that I am still learning how to write diverse characters, and I've been writing for 15 years so theres probably a lot of things I have written clumsily or in ignorance that could be updated.

If you can't do that then I will assume you are doing this in bad faith. I will assume you are doing what we have all seen you doing to the P/T authors: sending inflamatory messages based on their story tags rather than story content. I will assume your accusations are meritless and designed to put me on the defensive about whether i'm a racist or not, or that maybe youre a white nationalist using classic russian troll tactics (or a bot!) in order to try to spook me and so many other writers into only writing white characters.

I will not be spooked. I will continue to write the ship I've loved since childhood. I will continue trying to do that sensitively an well. I will continue to write diverse characters. I will continue learning from what I read and write and hear from credible sources about how to do that well. I will continue writing P/T into fics and trying to write them better than the 90s canon did. I will continue writing Chakotay and trying to write him better shit than the canon dumpster fire did. And I will continue writing all of them fucking. Joyously and angstily and maybe all at once if I can get that many limbs in a scene to make sense. And you know, I barely ever write anything about Harry because frankly hes just kinda boring, but maybe I will now as a treat.

I will do everything short of paying a sensitivity reader to edit my fanfic because frankly, I don't have the money to do that for fanfic writing, for which I do not get paid.

If youre capable of sending more than accusations and death threats then come on down and get in the weeds with me and tell me what I missed. And I will fix it.

If you respond to this with some bullshit telling me to kill myself then I'll delete it. And then I'll go write more stories with diverse characters.

why did you read “let’s hold transmisogynistic trans mascs accountable and not humor their bigotry” as “i hate trans men”? come now. the post only criticizes transmascs who engage in transmisogyny. nowhere does it say that transmascs are a threat or danger to trans women, just that they’re capable of being shitty to us and shouldn’t. you have to learn to read trans women in good faith.

Since this was split into two messages I'll have to respond in two parts, so bear with me. While I don't have much of an audience, it's important to me to head this off, so I'd appreciate it if anyone who reads this and agrees with my stances here also walks away with the message of patience and solidarity, and doesn't send messages her way for whatever reason. This isn't a callout and I don't believe in callouts; this is just how the inbox function works.

Anyway! First:

I can understand your rush to send off these messages, considering the amount of pushback you seem to have gotten, but as I said at the end of my reblog, I'm a trans woman myself; I've been out and proud with my she/they pronouns for over a decade. It's not about learning to understand trans women, is it? It's about the communication of ideas in the midst of a disagreement, itself in the midst of one of the most volatile and socially violent moments in our corner of the platform.

First, and perhaps most confrontationally, you didn't start with transmisogynistic trans mascs. You started with how this is our fight, and this isn't about them. That's the bit I take issue with. You say we have to stop excusing this behavior, and stop getting defensive and generalizing this shit, and that we cant be afraid to recognize their bigotry just because they’re also trans, but you are the one who started generalizing, and this is me recognizing it. You're lumping the guys who said "this is why we have to care about trans people, listen to trans siblings" in with the trans mascs -- including those which are profiles worn by the dedicated terf brigade that has been antagonizing Rita and other trans women for years -- who are spreading callouts and being part of the problem. We can't go into this acting defensive against our allies. I'll double down on this: You're playing the game the terfs want you to play.

To clarify a related point, this isn't about whether or not you hate men. I'll admit that I did check your reblogs, and that I give a little nervous side-eye toward some of the content you've posted, but that's honestly not my business and it wasn't the point. The point is that, whether you hate men or love them, whether you're helping to sow discontent among the community intentionally or unintentionally… you're still playing the game the terfs want you to play. This isn't about feelings; it's about the results.

Sure, but it does say

And isn't that the point? This isn't just about trans women. This is about the BLM protest, and all the black bloggers who got called russian bots and were terminated. This is about every sex worker who straddled the line of post-porn-ban TOS as best they could and still got banned for presenting wrong, from trans women posting their faces to trans men posting their nipples. This is about every voice that has consistently been eradicated from Tumblr, and Rita's is the latest and the loudest explosion heard but hers is not the only one we should be talking about, and her situation and ours is not the only one that matters.

I did read the rest of the post before I responded, and I'll give the same note here that I give when "journalists" front-load their articles with falsehoods because they know that the first few sentences are the most important ones: if you don't want your work to be adversarial, don't start it adversarially.
