OKAY PERCY JACKSON EPISODE 6 THOUGHTS (long post)

i was definitely a bit weary of the big changes: the fact that the summer solstice deadline passed and that percy gets 4 pearls. but after thinking about it for a while i think im actually okay with it!! first of all, its making the show interesting for book readers bc they caught me off guard and now we don’t 100% know how it’s going to play out lol

but also, i like that the deadline passing raises the stakes a bit more. the fact that percy still wants to go get the bolt from the underworld, just shows how committed he’s become to the actual goal of the quest and starting to embrace his demigod side. and it’s going to make his trip to olympus at the end so much riskier & dangerous considering a whole war is literally about to start. so im okay with this

and then the 4 pearls: i still don’t think they’re going to be able to take sally with them out of the underworld. something is definitely going to happen to 1 of the pearls, it’s going to get lost in the chaos of them making it to hades’ palace or SOMETHING because a big part of the prophecy is “fail to save what matters most in the end”. they have to leave sally behind and i think it’s going to be so much more heartbreaking that percy HAD 4 pearls and HAD the chance to save his mom but they lost 1 along the way so then they’ll have to make the tough decision and TRULY fail to save what matters most… bc in the book it’s not even really an option since he only gets 3 pearls

obviously i could be wrong about that lol but i don’t think there’s any way they don’t leave sally behind because she’s not there on the beach when they’re about to fight ares, which is where they are directly after the underworld (unless they’ve switched the order around but idk how that would work)

other than that I LOVED EVERYTHING with the trio, the bestieism continues and i love it. you can really see the shift in percy and annabeth’s dynamic after the last episode it’s so cute. the little grover and percy moments were so sweet too, their convos felt RIGHT out of the books to me. also MORE SEAWEED BRAIN AND WISE GIRL!!!

LOVE the dream sequence bc it felt so book accurate, we do get a lot of percy witnessing other people’s convos through his dreams and this is the first time we’ve seen it in the show, it was great

luke immediately jumping at the chance to blame clarisse for stealing the bolt in the iris message lol im laughing

more luke/annabeth sibling set up AND hermes and may and luke backstory set up??? i was NOT expecting that so early on but im deeply obsessed

the whole hermes situation was also great… i can’t believe it but i liked LMM’s performance?? i think he sold it really well. again im so excited to be getting these convos about hermes and luke so early on because it is such a key part to the end of the series.

the conversation with percy and the nereid and the way percy reacts to thinking the quest failed??? the way he refuses to give up?? the nereid saying they all see so much of poseidon in him??? i’m unwell

crying at annabeth pick pocketing hermes, the literal god of thieves, that’s my girl fr

the entire cab driving sequence was just so funny. peak comedy, and brought some lightheartedness to the episode that i think was very needed. the new yorker in percy really came out in that scene lmao

there was just SO MANY hilarious moments of dialogue and jokes between the trio i feel like this episode captured the essence of their dynamic from the books so well

overall LOVED it, wish it was longer, and i’m curious to see how they finish it off in the next 2 episodes. i’m trying my best to hold back the criticism for any changes until we’ve seen the whole season, because i think most complaints people have from this ep will probably just be fixed or addressed in the next 2 lol

The scarlet pimpernel seems to have permeated every aspect of my life and mind. I have just been and bought myself a plant from the plant shop, and (it being the healthiest specimen there) held it up and said “this is the Sir Percy of plants”.

I believe a popular current slang word to say that something is nice is ‘dope’. I shall start a petition to send to the slang ministry to have it replaced with ‘Sir Percy’.

Review: I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom

Yes, yes, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the meetcute of the century, it’s very exciting, but I have to ask–why is it framed like a horror movie? 

To be clear, I’m not saying I don’t like it. I can easily believe that it’s a character choice, that Leah decided Annabeth had been practicing that line over and over again to sound as cool and aloof as possible, and then not realize it makes her look super weird. That is the kind of intense, “formative years in magical summer camp” awkwardness that I always associate Annabeth with. But combined with the storm, the blurring of the curtains, and the sinister musical underscoring, it’s just a very odd choice. 

For me, personally, peak delivery of “You drool when you sleep” will always belong to Kristin Stokes, mostly because the comedic value of her cutting off Percy in the middle as he musically waxes poetic about how beautiful she is is very, very high. But, because it’s literally Leah’s first (technically second) line in the whole series, and because I think it does make sense with her character as the episode unfolds, I won’t say it’s the wrong choice. I won’t even say that I don’t get it. Just that, when combined with the rest of the framing, it’s an odd one. (Remind me to return to this point once the season is over, and we’ll see if my feelings have changed at all!)

I’m going to do my best to be normal about Luke, and I promise you, I will fail. Luckily for all of us, Luke is not yet babygirl; he is still only baby. As several others have pointed out, the fact that Luke’s first interaction with Percy is one of immediate sympathy, and that he more explicitly takes Percy under his wing, taking book!Annabeth’s position of being the lore explainer and confidante, is going to be so heinous in retrospect when the betrayal comes. As a side note, I loved the way that the other cabin members were side-eyeing Percy as the camera slowly picked its way through the room. Also, the fact that Luke’s words were repeated by the shadowy figure (presumably Kronos) in Percy’s nightmare? When Percy calls Luke his friend, still in the middle of his emotional separation from Grover? Amazing. It’s going to hurt so bad. 

You can tell Luke has a lot of sway in his cabin, from the little entourage–including Chris!–that follows him around camp, but I wish we had seen more of his status in the greater camp social circle, beyond him getting Clarisse to successfully back off. Even something as simple as people just calling out to him in greeting would help fill the gaps in. (Think “Hi, Barbie!”) This could easily bog down the pacing, though, so I get why it’s not here. You can also tell that Luke and Chris have their little grooming (ideological, not the other kind) routine down pat. “They like the smell of burnt mac and cheese?” “They like the smell of begging.” Might be my favorite exchange of the whole episode. 

Speaking of favorites, favorite performance this episode goes to Dior Goodjohn during capture the flag. However, Clarisse’s characterization here feels almost like the inverted version of Gabe from the previous episode–he’s been dialed down, but she’s been dialed up. In the books, she starts out as a bully, yes, but more of an ineffectual one, since she gets hit with a faceful of toilet water in her first appearance. Dior plays her much, much scarier than she ever was in text… but at the same time, could she be scarier just because the act of seeing someone in a fight can be scarier than reading about it? And again, the reverse for Gabe: was his character dialed down because seeing acts of domestic abuse at that level was a worse experience than reading about them? For Clarisse, this change works, but for Gabe, the jury's still out. 

Now, onto the claiming scene. Was it everything I hoped it would be and more? 

Not really. It was fine. (I thought the fight choreography was great, though–quick but still visceral, much more grounded than the standard Marvel featherlight beam fights.) For one thing, a glowing sea-green trident just doesn’t have the same visual oomph against a daylit background. For another, the drama of a hellhound coming out of nowhere and almost mauling Percy to death immediately raises the stakes, necessitating this equally dramatic resolution. But for a third, the claiming scene in the books is a hard subversion of what should be this triumphant, cathartic moment, where Percy is recognized by his father, but is instead immediately ostracized by his newfound community because of it. It’s a brilliant piece of writing, and it makes me go feral at the drop of a hat, and when the show decides to almost gloss over it, cutting from Percy in the water to Chiron’s exposition dump, it doesn’t feel like it has the time to settle, to impact the audience the way it should–or at least, the way that I want it to, the way it knocked me on my ass at age 12 and age 26 and age [redacted]. 

A lot of these last two episodes feel that way, in my opinion. I fear that, as someone who is clinically deep in the lore, my background knowledge fills in the gaps of the story that would otherwise be a detriment to a blind watcher. I recognize that there is a lot of book to get through in a relatively short amount of time, but we are skating along the plot at breakneck speed, and I worry that we are missing some key, grounding tentpoles in the meantime. 

So, with all that in mind, let’s talk about character arcs. 

Annabeth in the books clocks Percy as powerful from the moment she meets him–I think Annabeth in the show takes that to another level, using that fact to force Chiron’s hand in order to get her out of camp and on a quest. She is determined that Percy is “the one,” and if he isn’t, then she is going to make him so. It’s kind of hilarious to see a twelve year old as a kingmaker, but as Luke says, she’s always six steps ahead of everyone else. Based on this, I see why they’ve swapped some of Luke’s and Annabeth’s book personalities, because I predict that their show counterparts will switch roles as the season comes to an end. Annabeth will take Luke’s place as Percy’s friend, lore reservoir, and confidante, and Luke will become the cold, calculating one. Similarly, I bet that Grover and Percy’s arc will probably be about overcoming Percy’s feelings of betrayal towards Grover for getting him kicked out of Yancy. Percy’s new forged bonds with Grover and Annabeth will come in handy once Luke tries to stab him in the back. 

Stray thoughts:

Jason Mantzoukas, my beloved!! I’m glad he can dial down the insanity when necessary. As Dionysus, he has a really interesting dynamic switch between Percy (merciless trolling) and Grover (semi-stern authority). I wonder if it’s because technically Grover as a satyr kind of falls under his purview? Or am I overthinking it? 

At some point, if I can get good enough screencaps, I want to go through the set design and use my newfound ancient architectural knowledge to see where they pulled inspiration from

I wish Luke’s scar were bigger. And a little grosser. 

When Luke said the word “kleos,” I actually stood up and started pacing around the room. That, plus Chris name dropping an obscure god, makes me extremely happy.

It is so nice seeing Riordan’s continued commitment to expanding his world so that all kinds of kids can see themselves in his work!

It’s pronounced like “They-lia” with a soft th and I will die on this hill. But also, “forbidden kid” is kind of great and I kind of love it? 

One teeny nitpick: it looks most of the campers all have five bead necklaces, and I wish they had ones with different numbers: four beads, three beads, two beads, hell, throw in a 7 bead, just for fun

Aunt Zelda Heap (Septimus Heap) - This is a lady who eats cabbage and nothing else. Who has a cat who is a duck (or vice versa). She wears a giant quilted dress and lives in a swamp and brews magical potions and I want her life so bad.

Max Mayfield (Stranger Things) - MAX! my sweetie pie max <3 I love her so much. She's such a brat, she reminds me a lot of my little sister who I don't always get along with but love a whole lot. She's very cool, first person to introduce El to the concept of autonomy which we love her for, AND she gets to date Lucas (who's really Goals as a partner, if I could I would count him here too).

Blue Sargent (The Raven Cycle) - I don't know how to articulate how I feel about Blue exactly, like. her whole backstory is amazing (being raised in a house full of lady psychics while NOT being psychic herself but having Other abilities) and then she just gets looped into the weirdest plot possible and just hangs with it like a pro. Lot of respect <3 also every outfit she wears in the books seems like exactly something I'd wear.

Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) - God, I love this kid so much. The narration of those books is peak, Rick Riordan put so much PERSONALITY into Percy and he's just. Such a cute kid. He loves his mom and wants nothing more than for her to be safe. He's quippy and very funny and he knows it. He's genuinely scary at times. Amazing character.

Ravi Singh (A Good Girl's Guide To Murder) - honestly such a good sport, if some girl turned up at my door and started grilling me about the murders my brother supposedly committed I would NOT handle it that well. He's a sweet and caring guy, a good boyfriend, funny, and also helps solve murders. Very cool 👍

Grace Chasity (Starkid's Hatchetverse) - A literal bible-thumping puriteen in a way that's genuinely so funny. Manslaughter? A-ok. Dismembering a body? Sure. Terrorizing summer camp with an axe? Why not! Carrying someone's books before marriage? Showering naked?? Smoking weed??? You're literal satan! She's so funny and I would genuinely hate her irl but as a character she's amazing (and Angela Giarratana KILLS her performance it's amazing).

It’s Thursday motherfuckers and I am ready to kill Delilah Briarwood for the fourth(?) time! Y’all all of the interactions with VM were amazing. And seeing some of the de Rolo kids >:D. I love Vex taking her twins out to do Ranger shit and lil Gwen probably having more in her intelligence stat then all of Bells Hells combined amazing. Percy is such a prick(affectionate) and Vex is hot and cool as always. The way Matt is playing Pike is just peak performance and I am just fucking rolling. Ashton telling Percy off was legit one of my favourite moments this campaign, it was just perfect. You tell him Taliesin!! Oh my god and the battle literally at one of Laudna’s homes. Screw the people who were trying to drive her away, hate that. Also it was the house that Paté was made in 🥰🥰🥰🥰. I am so ready for another ducking crazy episode. And just like that, the rest of the world disappeared. sigh <3 congrats to the newly wedded couple and enjoy your Honeymoon Whority™️ <3 but no, this was just so so sweet and amazing. like i love how you captured the sweet moments and chaos that a wedding ensues bc this was absolutely the sweetest and softest thing but also THE most chaotic wedding aslkalsk. i mean it’s one of the most dramatic families in the ton so i don’t doubt it would be. i know we’re prolly close to wrapping this up but i can’t wait to see them as a wedded couple <3 it would just be the sweetest. but also, probably some arguments here and there? bc marriage isn’t all bliss, after all. i mean nothing too hurtful but ksksks. anyways! loved this!! amazing as always <3

wip wednesday!

“the beating of your heart,” jercy, G — stellarverse

SO it’s probably very obvious, but i am obsessed with @stillneedsmorekissing ‘s stellarverse series. especially the les mis part. so. here we are.

(this is an interpolation of one of my favorite bits of stellarverse—percy kisses jason during closing night of their high school production of les mis. emotional crises ensue.)

after all the hugs and the tears and the flowers, percy finally makes his way back to the dressing rooms. they’ll take care of the costumes and equipment and sets tomorrow during strike. he takes off his costume and hangs it up and changes into comfy sweats and an old band shirt. he begins the painful process of removing his mic, peeling away the tape and what feels like a layer of skin and hair as he does. the rest of the cast and crew are long gone, already at the cast party. he starts taking off his stage makeup, cotton balls and remover in hand. 

even with the sensory nightmare that is stage makeup and the lights and his costume and the mic belt, he still loves performing. he loves the rush of being up on stage, in front of hundreds of people, sharing this huge vulnerable part of himself. theater demands so much of him, of his feelings, his skills, his memory, that it’s so easy to be swept off his feet in the swirl of lights and music and forget himself in the moment––

oh god. he kissed jason. jason, the consummate professional, who was running off stage for his next cue. percy stopped him, grabbed his arm, and pulled him into a blazing kiss. it was enough to make jason break character for a moment—who wouldn’t?–pausing momentarily, dumbstruck, before racing upstage. percy didn't follow him, of course. his blocking was to climb the barricade, grabbing the banner on the way, and he exactly as the blocking said he should. but he wanted to follow him. 

normally, being on stage clears his racing thoughts, performing hitting that perfect peak of stimulation and challenge. but tonight was different. maybe he got a little too in character, letting his friendship with jason play out a little too real as enjolras and grantaire. it felt so right, so natural. let the wine of friendship never run dry. 

there’s a knock at the dressing room door, pulling him out of his reverie. “percy? are you in there?” 

jason. 

“do you, uh, still need a ride to the cast party?” 

percy pauses. “just taking my makeup off; i’ll be ready soon.” 

jason walks in, face pink from the makeup wipes. probably. 

“you look like you missed a spot.” he crosses the room in quick strides, pulling out a makeup wipe from the counter. he gently rubs at a spot on percy’s jaw. 

“oh, and you’ve got some mic tape stuck in your hair…” jason reaches for the back of percy’s neck where a stray piece of tape has glued itself to the short hairs there. 

“just rip it off. i don’t mind,” percy tells him, hoping he doesn’t notice the heat rising in his cheeks. jason grips the tape firmly and gives it a sharp tug, pulling off the tape along with a stripe of Percy’s hair. 

percy gasps, partly because of the pain, and partly because he wasn’t expecting it to feel… like that. 

jason’s eyes meet his own, full of worry. “did i hurt you?” he asks. 

“never,” percy says with a small smile. jason is incredibly close, now. he can feel the warmth of jason’s body, and the memory of his fingers on his neck. 

jason pauses. he swallows hard, not looking at percy. inhales like he wants to say something. but something never comes.

LITERALLY peak. i will never be over how cool she looks. also her voice actor did such a FANTASTIC performance with her. absolutely superb.

> Favorite moment oh MAN that ones so hard. she has so many standout moments throughout her entire appearance! though i really have to hand it to the forest chase scene in specific for just. the sheer silly antics. it was just fun all the way through! zoras the type of character where it Is very fun watching her in her element... but also i wanna see her genuinely be caught off guard by something completely dumb. and that scene is exactly that! also special shoutout to “cowboy :)” “You Got It Buddy!” and the entirety of great at cowboy. hearing that for th first time was So hype.

> Idea for a story hmmm... honestly, i cant really think of anything terribly creative! i would Love to see just... more of her being petty and silly though. love that part about her so much. maybe some shenanigans between th blisstrio being dorks together.

Red (Part 2)

In my previous post, I talked about how red in Amphibia represents all of Sasha’s worst traits, as well as violence and danger in general.

So check this out.

During the entire scene atop Toad Tower, Sasha (and Grime) are positioned in front of the red full moon, while Anne and the Wartwoodians are positioned away from it, in front of Amphibia’s night sky. The more that the duel progresses and Sasha gains the upper hand, the larger and more dominant the moon grows throughout the scene. Until...

Anne’s moment of victory is punctuated by the explosion of the blue boom shrooms.

But of course, the moon is still there, and still red. It won’t go away until the danger passes.

After the extreme prominence of red in Reunion, Amphibia shies away from heavy use of the color for quite a while - the next time we see it is in Barrel’s Warhammer.

Team Sash puts on their performance for the Toad Army in front of these red curtains. Their new armor is all red, too - a nearly completely uniform shade of red, representing Sasha’s single-minded focus on her goal. This Toad Tower (which I think is Aldo’s) shares the same red banners as Grime’s.

As the episode proceeds on to finding Barrel’s Warrhammer, it only proceeds to get more red. I mean, look at this place.

And no wonder, Sasha is at peak manipulative here as she works to convince Percy and Braddock to stick with the mission. And sure, she’s doing it in what she genuinely believes is their best interest, but we’re still definitely seeing Sasha at her worst here.

After this point, Sasha episodes tend to be largely focused on her relationships with other characters, so we don’t see a lot more red... with one exception.

Red represents manipulation, violence, danger, and aggression.

We’re not quite done here, though, because I made a bit of a mistake. In my introductory post, I said that Sasha’s color was red and not pink. I said that because I was thinking of magenta as the Sasharcy color, but I was wrong. Magenta and pink are separate colors, or at least they’re used separately by Amphibia. More on that next time.

percy and keyleth’s dynamic in general is one i love a lot, i’m glad it gets across (their scene alone in the keep was so good)

keyleth has some really cool, badass, and tender moments in these eps! i love to see them

the flashback with professor anders is peak "why did they even hire that guy"

my biggest problem with the show’s writing is that i keep thinking “hmm, this feels like the most obvious way to portray this scene” and wishing they had given it more thought and gone with the third or fourth idea that occurred to them... to some degree i think cliché is built into the briarwood arc, because as compelling as it is, i have always kind of felt that percy’s backstory was mostly clichés in an overcoat — which is not a diss against percy or tal, i’m sure it does exactly what he set out to do — but my issue isn’t with the plot so much as ways of conveying particular beats through dialogue and other writing choices.

if you have no idea what i’m talking about.... don’t worry about it. i’m inclined to be critical in this respect

with that said, when they resist some of the more obvious possibilities, it’s really good! the way pike’s reconnection with the everlight was written/reframed, in particular, i liked a lot
