Once again plugging the BEASTS OF BURDEN OMNIBUS in the hopes of selling a copy or two. In this modern comics world a book comes out and disappears like a pebble tossed in a lake. There's a few ripples and then it's forgotten. I keep taking this pebble out and drying it. I don't think that metaphor really works but fuck it.
BUY THIS BOOK. DON'T POSTPONE JOY.
The Beasts of Burden Omnibus is available at full-line comic shops and bookstores that support stuff like this. It's also available from online book and comic shops and sellers. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the same folks who published The Eltingville Club, Dork and Milk & Cheese (and will once again in the future).
Almost 600 color pages of story and extras for only $30. Dogs and cats versus the supernatural. Includes every story done so far including the crossover with Mike Mignola's Hellboy. Art by co-creator Jill Thompson and Benjamin Dewey. Lettering by Nate Piekos and Jason Arthur. Scripts by e, with several stories co-written with Sarah Dyer. Winner of eight Eisner Awards and a Harvey Award. We lost some other things we were nominated for.
It's a good comic.
End of plug.

Nosferatu’s Contracts: A Linguistic Deepdive
(This is one half of a blogpost I put on my website! Read the full thing for a full list of sources and even MORE information on the contract from the 1922 film).
So I saw the new Nosferatu film the other day and while I didn't think it was all that fantastic (I loved the first half okay, calm down) the one thing that did stick out to me was the absolutely gorgeous scripts used for the contract that Thomas has to sign. Thank you to this Reddit post for sharing a picture of the entire thing:
Tumblr media
The BEAUTIFUL red calligraphy is called Vyaz, a form of decorative Cyrillic calligraphy. In Vyaz script, letters are all joined and interwoven together to create a beautiful, ornamental typographical piece. The Wikipedia page about it is fucking pathetic but it does feature this example of text with a coloured breakdown of the individual words that comprise the piece:
Tumblr media
Obviously this itched my language brain like crazy. The best resource I have found since to learn more about Vyaz is this full, free guide written by Viktor Pushkarev. He has also released a 254 page PDF for 25 euros called the Modern Slavic Vyaz Calligraphy Workbook and I think I'm going to have to buy it. His examples look stunning and I would love to learn more about this style of calligraphy. Thank you, Nosferatu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Vyaz calligraphy is only one style of writing used in that contract. The other is a completely different style of writing and, surprisingly (or not, maybe?) the best place to look for answers turned out to once again be Reddit. This commenter suggests it's another form of Cyrillic:
Tumblr media
Here's some Glagolitic, to compare:
Tumblr media
In a different thread, this commenter claims to have cracked it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This commenter replies with an addition:
Tumblr media
So that's cool! In that same thread, this commenter says that the contract looks like a Romanian hrisov, or medieval chancellery charter, and recommends this video explaining how they were written. As you can see from the example below that the commenter shared, these traditional contracts look pretty damn similar to Orlok's contract! So let's talk about them real quick, because it's interesting!
Tumblr media
The video is by Adrian Gheorghe, a historian whose speciality is the editing and translation of all documents regarding Vlad the Impaler. He talks about how unlike letters, which would be written in Latin, these charters were written in Slavonic, a liturgical and "literary language, based on Slavic dialects of the Balkans, developed by monks in the 9th century" (X). Viktor Pushkarev suggests a book called Grammar of the Church Slavonic Language if you want to learn more about the grammar and syntax. Slavonic was often written in Glagolitic and hey, we've seen that before!
Tumblr media
These charters also had explicit and strict structures that they adhered to. This strict standard served to not only prove the legitimacy of a document, but that "the document was drawn up with all due solemnity" (X). Interestingly, each charter would invoke God in the opening lines or would simply have a cross at the beginning, and according to the translations given above Count Orlok's contract does not seem to include this. I recommend checking out the video in its entirety to hear more about this cool bit of history.
But of course... that's not all that's written on the contract, is it? Thomas signs it, and he signs it in Kurrent script, an old traditional form of German cursive. If you'd like to learn how to write in Kurrent, there's a free guide by Margarete Mücke right here! Here's a screenshot I took of the scene along with a Kurrent alphabet for comparison:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kurrent has a really interesting history. It evolved from gothic cursive at the beginning of the 16th century, which saw a lot of use in the medieval ages. Compared to the vast variety of gothic cursive writing styles, Kurrent was "beautiful, fast to write and comparatively legible" (X). It soon moved out of use solely in chancelleries and into everyday use, becoming more and more standardised.
This script saw a bit of a rollercoaster of popularity; in the early 1900s it was established and taught in all German schools, then steadily became seen as "antiquated and ugly", then the Nazis declared other writing scripts "Un-German" and promoted gothic typography until 1941 when Hitler declared Kurrent and its sister writing style Fraktur "to be of 'Jewish origin' and therefore taboo". More information about this can be found on this page about the history of Old German Script (another name for Kurrent).
So that's that! Count Orlok's contract is based on traditional charters of the region with set structures to highlight their legitimacy and importance as documents, using traditional scripts and handwriting of the time, and is also a style of document that is directly tied to Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Dracula and ultimately Nosferatu. Extremely cool and also totally makes sense considering Robert Eggers interest in authentic linguistic detail (like I didn't even mention the language that Orlok speaks throughout the film, which is Dacian, an extinct ancestor of Romanian). Lots of really tasty stuff to look at and I had a blast putting it all together.
Except.......... it's not the end. There's a whole second saga to be told about the contract from the 1922 film, and if you wanna read that (I get deep into talking occult symbols and angel languages) you're gonna have to read the original post on my site!

Advanced searching on xiv.quest!
Tumblr media
Using this Firefox extension!
My FFXIV script site works great if you already know exactly what you're looking for, but here's a solution for if you want to find something a little more vague. For example, the search in the screenshot says "find any time anyone except Urianger says "thou."
If you're familiar with regular expressions, this'll be pretty self-explanatory. If you're not, I'm putting a crash course under the cut to help you use this extension on the site!
Here's a basic setup for any and all searches you'll want to do:
Make sure all checkboxes are ticked (case sensitivity optional).
Put ^.* at the beginning of your expression (where it says "Type Regex here") to say "I want to see everything from the beginning of the line to my result!"
Put .*$ at the end of your expression to say "I want to see everything from my result to the end of the line!"
Type $0\n\n in the "custom template" field to put a line break in between results.
With that, you can start doing basic searches:
Tumblr media
...but to do more complicated stuff is a little more work. Here's a small list of searches I've used myself — the useful ones written out below for those who don't want to leave Tumblr or if the link breaks, but this link to Google sheets is easier to read.
To find a specific character saying a specific word:
Format: Name:.*word
Example search: ^.*Zenos yae Galvus:.*beast.*$
Example result: Zenos yae Galvus: Man should fight for the joy of it. To live, to eat, to breed─lesser beasts snap and howl at one another for this. Only man has the wisdom and the clarity to embrace violence for its own sake.
To find a specific word said by anyone except a specific character:
Format: (?<!Name):.*word
Example search: ^.*(?<!Urianger):.*\bthou\b.*$
Example result: Ifrit: Thou art strong, mortal!
Note: Note the \b in the example search! It's not mandatory, but is very helpful in this particular case. It marks a "word boundary," so that you get results for "thou" but not for "thoughts" or "without" (basically like the "Whole Words" option in regular Ctrl+F). You can use this whenever/wherever it's helpful. Like it's not used in the above example with Zenos because I wanted it to return the plural "beasts."
To find anything said by a specific character or any of their aliases:
Format: Name\)?:
Example search: ^.*Vrtra\)?:.*$
Example result: Varshahn (Vrtra): That is all I need know of thee for now.
Note: You have to have the "Show real names" option enabled on the website for this to work!
To find any two words used in the same line:
Format: (?=.*\bword1\b)(?=.*\bword2\b)
Example search: ^.*(?=.*\bFeo Ul\b)(?=.*\bthey\b).*$
Example result: G'raha Tia: By the way, have you spoken with Feo Ul of late? Some days ago, they appeared to me in a dream─of the sleeping persuasion, that is.
Note: This looks so complicated because it will find the words in either order! Putting "they" before "Feo Ul" would work exactly the same.
You can keep these examples as templates to use for yourself without having to understand how they work by using the extension's built-in Profiles, and just swapping in the words you want to search:
Tumblr media
...but the possibilities really open up if you want to learn how they work! You can combine the above examples in different ways and built your own profiles. I have other tabs in the Google Sheet linked above for learning how to use regex, and the Firefox extension itself includes a cheat sheet under the "Help" button which is super useful!

ik you were joking but I would be genuinely interested to hear about the flux cowriting credits strife if you feel like going into detail on it
Tumblr media
So I have a big conspiracy theory about season 13 of Doctor Who ("Flux"), namely that there's a lost episode was scripted and even possibly filmed in near entirety, but ended up being cut and cannibalized in post production due to behind the scenes issues, and the fandom has yet to pick up on it.
For anyone who doesn't watch the show: Flux is a miniseries of Doctor Who; a full season was not commissioned because it was produced during Covid. The most important stuff about it for the purposes of this post are:
It's 6 episodes long (¹). The episodes are all directly continuous and could not be shuffled around. (I should clarify here that, no, the showrunner can't simply choose on a whim to make 10 episodes, or only make 4; they had to stick to 6, as that was the amount they were picked up and scheduled for)
The showrunner, Chris Chibnall , wrote every episode apart from episode 4 (Village of the Angels) which he has a co-writing credit on.
(More subjectively but perhaps relevant) The season is largely considered to be kind of a structural mess and (less subjectively) there appears to some abnormal and consistent production issues (²)
So the first thing I need to evidence here is that Chris Chibnall, aforementioned showrunner and writer of the entire season, was late. Like, really late.
Word of mouth gossip had been circulating for a while that there was some sort of on-set problem involving filming having to be paused because he was still finishing scripts: (³)
Tumblr media
This would later be confirmed at a Gallifrey One panel (⁴) with Matt Strevens, the executive producer, who suggests that filming stopped to allow Chris Chibnall to finish scripts; he further implies that large swathes of episode 5/Block 2 weren't written until Episode 4/Block 1 (in which Kevin McNally debuts) was filming:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So with that context, let's talk about that Episode 4, "Village of the Angels", the only episode not attributed solely to Chris Chibnall. Co written by Maxine Alderton.
The filming pics reveal an interesting bit of trivia for Village: namely, the clapperboards show that the story was actually filmed as episode 5, not 4:
Tumblr media
As the above tweet suggests, this doesn't make much sense. The miniseries is, again, a single continuous plot. It's not like they flipped Village and the current episode 5, Survivors of the Flux; the latter explicitly takes place chronologically after it. And yet, Village having been intended as the penultimate episode 5 is further evidenced by the original trailer for it, in which a character states that the story takes place on the 28th of November. This line is dubbed over in the final episode and subsequent trailers to instead say the 21st:
Why is this line important enough to dub? Because that's meant to line up with the air date of the episode. Episode 4 aired on the 21st and 5 on the 28th. But something happened in post production, and now it's episode 4 on the 21st instead (⁵):
Tumblr media
So if none of these episodes were moved around but it does seem like Village was meant to be episode 5, where and what is the original episode 4?
I have a theory.
Flux has a recurring subplot involving two side characters, a married couple (Bel and Vinder) who have been separated by the titular disaster and are traveling the universe to reunite with each other. This story is told through segments sprinkled throughout the episodes. These have a different writing style (including a diary-esque narration only present in these scenes) and an internally consistent visual style that looks somewhat different to the other parts of the season.
Village of the Angels, for instance, is a moody, dark episode set in a village in the 1960s:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Bel and Vinder's segments in the episode have a somewhat different look:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On top of this, they never intersect with the episode's A plot (literally or in any clear thematic way), and the majority of these segments piece together into one single scene that seems to have been cut up.
So, what I think is that the bel and vinder scenes across the middle of the season were originally a single full story, an episode 4 that took a breather from the main plot and characters to follow the lives of these two side characters; the differing visual and writing style is due to it originally having been filmed separately and with a somewhat different artistic intent. I believe Chris Chibnall's cowriting credit on Angels exists because these specific scenes are from a script he wrote, but that otherwise the Angel script can be credited solely to Maxine Alderton by normal cowriting standards.
"But wait," you might say, "I thought there were already 6 episodes that are all plot relevant? If no episodes existing right now can be cut, how could this 7th episode exist?"
Remember this tidbit:
Tumblr media
The adventures in question comprise a large amount of the next episode (Episode 5: Survivors of the Flux), nearly 20 minutes of a 50ish minute runtime (and frankly, much of the rest of the episode is somewhat fluffy build up that feels like it's taking advantage of an extended runtime). A version without this added plot would, in my opinion, only warrant one final episode rather than two.
I think the showrunner, still scrambling to finish scripts as the episodes were being filmed, and making a snap decision to include a new major subplot (⁶), wrote a finale script so long and with so many plot threads that the only way to keep all this material of was to split it into two episodes, 5 and 6. And because they only could only make 6, he had to get rid of one of the previous 5 episodes - the already scripted and filmed ones - to make room for this new episode 5. A tough order when it's a plot-heavy miniseries... if not for episode 4 being a standalone divergence from the main plot about the lives of two side characters, one that could, in theory, be cut up and dispersed throughout the season without continuity issues for the main story.
(Some notes and clarifications under the cut)
(1) some sources initially reported the episode count as 8; this wasn't inaccurate - the 2022 new years/easter special were part of the episode order. Flux itself was always meant to be 6 episodes long. (2) A few of the production issues include: - episodes filming without a second draft:
Tumblr media
- the fx team that had been on the show since 2005 abruptly leaving midseason (because they "didn't feel like part of the team anymore") and returning as soon as the creative team changed, including the head of the studio implying they weren't properly credited (mild vfx body horror warning in link):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- people working on additional projects such as books not receiving clear information on the characters they were assigned to write:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- and likely a director who was put on hold due to a script being rewritten:
Tumblr media
Among other things I can't directly cite at the moment, including vfx artists having to do whole episodes solo in crunch time and writers not being told their work was massively overhauled until it aired due to major changes being extremely late in production.
While I don't wish to pontificate too much here and many of these things are pretty normal by themselves, I do think it could paint a picture of a production where an episode well into filming may genuinely be cut on a whim and without consideration for the crew, artists, etc. working on the show. (3) This reddit post comes from a leaker who was known to be consistently accurate. (4) Gallifrey One does not allow filming of panels. I know Kevin's livetweets of panels to be accurate. (5) It's very, very unlikely the entire season was moved back a week, as the premier is a Halloween special that was certainly always intended to air on Oct. 31st. (6) I don't wish to insinuate Chris Chibnall is, throughout his career, an inherently poor showrunner, but I do think that maybe his jump from police procedural - a genre that doesn't involve quite as much concept art, vfx work, marketing, convention panels, set building, episodic storytelling, and keeping in touch with expanded universe producers - to flagship science fiction adventure show may have contributed to some of these issues, especially when he was already in the mindset that things could be changed on a whim (perhaps not such a major issue when it's broadchurch and no new sets need be built)
Tumblr media
(source) Basically I don't really think this is "the showrunner's fault" or anything; more that a perfect storm of a showrunner who was habitually late on scripts, used to writing lowkey cop dramas, covid, an entirely serialized season, etc. may have led to these issues

Mission Control 28
Warnings: non/dubcon, violence, blood, stalking, pregnancy and allusions to abortive measures and other dark elements. My username actually says you never asked for any of this.
My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
Character: Captain Hydra
Summary: a man marches into your life on a mission
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging ❤️
Tumblr media
The house is silent. It has been. More than usual.
It isn't the silence that bothers you, it's the solitary. You know he's not there. You just have a sense about it. It reminds you of the place he took you before. When he left you alone. What happened when he left you alone.
Denial. That lasted all of three seconds. There’s no denying the evidence.
Anger. That stuck around. It’s there still. You’re angry not just about that thing he put inside you, but that he even brought you into the situation to do so. He didn’t just make this baby, he stole a life from you. It wasn’t much, but it was yours. Then he took it for himself and now it will go to the child.
Bargaining. You try and you try to convince yourself that you’ll be okay. It’s not that bad. You can do this. Shouldn’t you want a family?
With him? With that monster? You settled. You let yourself get comfortable. That doesn’t change what he’s done. He’s mangled you so much you can’t even recognise yourself. Not in a mirror or in your own mind.
Depression. Nothing new. That’s always been there. Maybe even before him. It’s like the air has been sucked out of the room every time you remember and you never forget.
Acceptance. You can’t. You can’t accept this. You are grieving more than your body, more than this pregnancy. You are grieving for yourself. How do you do that?
So you revert. Step two. Anger. White hot anger.
He did this and then he left you. Again. Why would he take you only to keep abandoning you? He can rip apart a man with his bare hands but he can’t face this? He might not be the man he once was, but he sure is still a man. Typical.
You sit at the table. The tea is cold. You shouldn’t have caffeine but frankly you don’t care. It’s not just about the baby, you don’t have the energy to take care of yourself. The most effort you put in was opening a packet of crackers and you’d have one before your stomach turned.
You leave the mug on the table with the rest. You don’t bother counting them like you don’t count the days. There’s something rancid stinking up the kitchen. You go back to bed, yourself pungent with stale sweat.
You drag your feet into the bedroom. You stop short. He’s back.
The Captain. Steve. Whatever he is now. He sits on the bed, a piece of paper in his hands. It’s wrinkled and a corner’s torn off. He crinkles it as he stands. He nods at you.
You turn back, ready to march away. You hear him. It isn’t often that you do. He sneaks up on you. He grabs your arm. You spin and shove him off you.
“How long’s it been? Weeks?” You snarl.
He looks down and puts up two fingers.
“Only two?” You scoff. “Wow. Great.”
His blue eyes flick up and he frowns. He raises the page and wiggles it at you. There’s a gleam in his eyes. Desperation.
You sigh and cross your arms. He unfolds the paper and shows you the jagged writing, words scribbled and scratched over. You bit the insides of your cheeks. You snatch it and spin away.
Your heart is racing. Your ears ring with rage. You should crumple it up and throw it back in his face. You almost do. You stop yourself as you see your name at the top. Written ten times in a row.
You take a breath and stop. You read with your back to him.
‘Taken. Scared—bad people. Made bad.’
You pause as you examine the script. The lines are jagged like he’s fighting himself with each letter. You continue.
‘Alone. I kill. I hurt. I alone.’
You fidget. You’re angry. Remember.
‘Long time. Orders in ear. No mouth. I obey. Obeyed!’
There’s a whole line of scribbles.
‘I remembered. Mother. Friend. Men fighting. Hole in the ground. Guns.’
There’s a drawing of a tank and explosions, crosshatched to one side of the page. Trees splinter and smoke plumes.
‘Memories.’ The single word hangs below.
‘See you. Remember more. See you and sun hot. Sky big.’
A squiggle stretches across the rest of the line, as if he couldn’t decide his next words.
‘I try. I hurt. You.’
Exes in a clutter before the final word.
‘Sorry’.
You focus on that word. Your stomach is tight. You try to find your anger.
You walk away. You go back downstairs and to the window in the front room. You look out at the melting snow, water trickling from above.
Captain America died valorously in 1945. That’s what they taught you in school. It’s what was pasted over the commemorative copies of The Times. That wasn’t true. He’s right there with you.
All those years, has he been like this? Broken and silent. Alone. You hang your head. It has to be the hormones.
His footsteps approach from behind. You face him as you clutch the paper. He holds up the tablet.
You get closer to read the page. It isn’t the dictionary he uses. It’s a business page. For a clinic. ‘Reproductive services and procedures’... Oh.
You fold the paper and hold it out. He lowers the tablet, his brow furrowed, and he takes it. He rests it on the screen.
“You understand. I want it gone.” You say.
He nods.
“You took everything from me.” You hiss, tears beading in your eyes. He nods again. “You ruined everything. My foot, my... my...” You can’t finish as your throat clogs. “I don’t want this. You know that.”
He winces. His face slowly hardens. He slips the tablet under his arm. He signs.
“But I need you.”
You cross your arms and shrug.
“The baby is gone and this never happens again,” you barter.
His throat tightens. He signals yes. Then something else. ‘Broken. Bad.’
You sniff. “Yes, you are.”

What makes me crazy about Arcane season 2 is that, if you watch only the final episode of season 2, there is nothing wrong with this interpretation of the themes or of Viktor's character. It is, obviously, a beautiful - if simple - sentiment that we all love to see in stories. And Viktor shown as the unloved misunderstood villain next to Jayce's unquestionably heroic narrative and forgiving heart supports this statement, as well as feeding the fire of jay//vik shippers.
This is assuming that season 2, and the final act of season 2 in particular, was written as a proper continuation and conclusion to the whole of Arcane. Which it was not.
Season 1 Viktor is pursuing change and "evolution" at first because he loves science and wants to help the undercity, and then later, because he is dying. He doesn't want to die without leaving behind a legacy. He doesn't want to die, period. What does that have to do with him not feeling loved? Interpreting Viktor's attempts to survive and his desire for legacy and success as "wrong" or something he should not have done instead of seeking love in Jayce or Sky flattens his character and moves him away from the themes of tragedy, progress, technology, and the gray area that exists between heroism and villainy, and makes season 1 less coherent.
You can take the season 2 finale and retroactively apply "Viktor wasn't loved enough/didn't understand love" to season 1 and sort of season 2 acts 1 and 2, but this involves imagining scenes and dialogue to fill in what wasn't written in season 1. It is not present in the text.
What is present in the text in season 1 is the class struggle. How Viktor is shafted in Piltover compared to Jayce. And how Jayce does not understand how Viktor is being shafted, nor how Viktor feels about that or Jayce's involvement in that imbalance. Viktor's one solitary attempt to reach out to Jayce and tell him what he's up to is nipped in the bud by Viktor himself because of Jayce's prejudice and the threat he poses by wielding power he doesn't know how to use - a microcosm of the threat Piltover poses to the undercity on a daily basis. The rift between them grows throughout season 1 as a result, culminating in Jayce's frankly inadvisable and rushed efforts to make changes between Piltover and Zaun that are ultimately futile anyway, and result in all of Jayce's fears and prejudices against the undercity being tragically and unfortunately validated anyway. Which does not carry through to season 2 at all, but that's for another post.
What is present in the text in season 2 acts 1 and 2 is... not much, if we're being honest. Viktor leaves Piltover because Jayce crossed multiple lines. Probably including the fact that Hextech is being weaponized (frustrating how this is not in the script - Fortiche animators could only show this through hints in the scenery and later in a music montage). Viktor is in the commune in act 2, he's not acting like himself, and it's about evolution, magic, and Viktor's attempts to "help" the undercity being futile no matter what he does. Jayce gets a hamfisted "arc" of - somehow? - unlearning his prejudice or something without meaningfully interacting with anyone from the cast let alone anyone from the undercity, with a halfhearted attempt at making him look like a misunderstood crazy person who is really "right all along."
By the time we get to act 3, Viktor's sudden turn to black-and-white villainy, his focus on "perfection," let alone Jayce's sudden black-and-white heroism and suddenly being "in the right" while Viktor is "in the wrong" is completely incoherent with everything that came before. And season 2's oddly disconnected and simplistic writing is smoothed over with "love was the answer all along. and poor Viktor never understood that until the very end :("

do you like scary movies?
Tumblr media
synopsis - taking an acting job may end up with you discovering alot more about the esteemed director than you wished you would've known
includes - mr reca
warnings - gn!reader, fluff??, mentions of murder, minor character death, wc - 1.5k
a/n: this possessed me yesterday... i dont like it that much but here you go! happy halloween to those who celebrate :) shouts to @mitsvriii (reca kisser in denial) + @theother-victoria / @https-sourlimes (my fellow ceos of the reca fanclub) for proofreading!! and victoria has kind of enticed me to make a part two...
Tumblr media
“it's a bit insensitive, don't you think?” another of actor whispered to you
mere moments ago, you had all been handed the newest script for the highly esteemed mr reca's new film. you had always wanted to have a part in one of his films and so when you saw a post about auditions on paperfolds university notice board, you jumped at the opportunity, to say the audition was nerve-wracking would be a massive underestimate. for one of your first auditions, going for a role in mr reca's film was certainly ambitious.
but by some stroke if luck, you landed a part. and the lead role at that - you swore you nearly ascended to aeonhood when you received the news. the nerves never really went away however, now you felt an immense pressure to do well. mr reca himself had chosen you to play a lead role in his new film. you couldn't let him down.
on the initial audition post, it detailed how it was for roles in a horror film, nothing else. he could be quite secretive like that. so as soon as all roles had been chosen the scripts were handed out in complete confidence and you were all informed of when you needed each part memorized.
“i mean sort of? but people make documentaries all the time…” another one actor whispered before they were quickly shut down by the former who angrily whispered back,
“yeah but those are documentaries! and normally they have eyewitness testimonies!! not some actors acting out stories around it!!”
your slightly scrunched your eyebrows as you re-read the script. you could definitely see it as being somewhat insensitive. it was very evident that the director had taken some inspiration from the current serial killings that were plaguing penacony and outside the dreamscape.
there had been multiple instances of various penacony goers suddenly becoming unresponsive in the dreamscape and then later found dead in their hotel rooms in the real world. it had taken penacony by storm and multiple messages from the family had been issued to try and calm the masses.
although the family's noticeable lack of actual action was what caused most of the panic, they only addressed it and told people to stay safe. not taking any proper action like they should be doing.
this was probably why mr reca began directing a horror film now, with everyone's eyes on the news about this masked killer horror was all the rage - it would be weird if not even one director didn't capitalize of this event as morbid as that may seem.
but some days, penacony was the emptiest it had ever been due to the constant fear of becoming the serial killer's next victim. apparently, however, mr reca didn't seem to be phased by such fads. as written in the scripts were detail for detail deaths that perfectly resemble their real life counterparts.
each one even had a perfect example for how the kill was carried out which, admittedly, sent a shiver down your spine. it wasn't exactly unknown that reca used some real life scenarios to model parts of his films, but this did seem excessive. but you weren't really in a position to argue against him.
so while your fellow actors bickered about the script, you bit your tongue and held your thoughts in - despite the constant unease that plagued the back of your mind. you were an actor, this was a film. all you had to do was memorize your lines and prove to mr reca that he chose the right person to play the main character.
the first few days of filming had gone well, so far your character had yet to encounter the killer and was living up to the overused “plot armor” character. from what you had read in the script, your character was meant to live until the end, losing all your friends along the way and narrowly escaping death more times than you could count. typical horror movie protagonist.
you had to admit, mr reca certainly was… out there when it came to the creative liberty he had taken about the backstories of how the kills were carried out. you could almost imagine that he was there with how well thought out it was - especially paired with how accurately detailed the kills were… even though the family kept most of the details secret…
he probably had a way of getting those. probably best not to dwell on it.
everything went rather smoothly until the last couple scenes. your character was meant to encounter the killer face to face for the first time after seeing your best friend be killed - in the same manner as the last victim that lost their life a couple days before filming to the real serial killer - and then you'd run away and survive. pretty standard acting in your eyes.
but when you entered the studio, the first thing you noticed was the lack of other actors or crew. the only other person you had seen so far was the other actor who was meant to be playing the role of “your best friend” but they were leaving as you entered.
then you encountered mr reca himself, standing in the middle of the set half dressed in the exact same outfit as the real masked killer detailed by the family to watch out for. he was really making this authentic huh?
“mr reca, sir, i didn't know you were playing a role in your own film?” you poised, you knew he'd be there with his assistant but that was to oversee the filming but you hadn't expected him to take up a role himself.
he hummed “yes. normally i don't but i deemed my original choice unfit and it's too late for replacements” the costume certainly fit him too well for a last minute replacement.. did he have it made recently?
he took a couple steps over to a table that was on set, looking over it before picking up a knife that seemed a bit too real to be a prop, “plus, i had an idea. a change in scenes you may say and i wanted to personally try out my new idea”
panic flooded your body at the idea of not going by the original script you memorized, but you swallowed any hesitancy and agreed, you could handle an impromptu scene change right? you shakily agreed and sensing your nerves, reca continued
“don't worry, i don't expect you to get it right on the first try, i did drop this on you. i may need to act it out a couple times to decide myself” this time, he stalked over to you and gave you a smirk that set off your fight or flight “i haven't quite decided which kill i prefer yet”
the filming certainly took longer than you anticipated, mr reca kept changing the scenario and you always tried to keep up with his ideas but you were wearing thin. it appeared as though his main change was making your character become the final victim. you knew it was all acting and he was trying to find the perfect end but there was something about how passionate he was about each scenario that unnerved you more and more.
each scenario was so perfectly planned out. you could take a guess that they could all be carried out without a hitch or even a suspect if the current serial killer were to perform them. even halfway through, on one of your breaks, you made a joke about it to him.
“you know, mr reca” he turned to look at you “your scenarios are always really planned out! it's like your a natural at this” you let out a small awkward chuckle as you trailed off
he smiled “a good director must know about what he's directing, that's how a film feels authentic” a small pause as he looked down at the “prop” in his hand, turning it a few times “and even get some hands on experience…”
you couldn't quite catch his last few words so you asked him to repeat but he made a small vague dismissive gesture with his empty hand
“dont worry about it, what's more important is that i think i figured out what i want for the scene” he beamed and so you agreed to wrap up filming for that day.
the next day, for your own piece of mind, you decided to ignore the latest death that occured last night being carried out the exact same way that you acted out with him that previous night.
and you didn't look into the fact that he personally asked you to act again in his next horror film as the main character again. it was all a coincidence right? mr reca wouldn't hurt you if it wasn't though… right?

In the summer of 1931, she played Susan Lenox in Susan Lenox: Her Fall and Rise, an adaptation of a novel by David Graham Phillips. Lenox goes down and up the social scale, beginning as a dancer in a circus troupe, rising to be an elegant New York courtesan, and then finding the man who deserted her early in the film, who is her “one true love.” Clark Gable, the new heartthrob, played her lover. But by the time twenty writers had contributed to the screenplay and the script, partly because the SRC kept requiring changes, the film had become confused. Garbo walked off the set six times, and writers each time had to fix the problem. Walking off the set was Garbo’s way of complaining. Garbo spends much of the film running away from men who are trying to force her to marry a man she doesn’t love, or trying to find Gable, who thinks she has deserted him. Especially surprising is that Gable, with his dimples, looks feminine, while Garbo’s masculine body is emphasized. When Garbo catches Gable at the end of the film, they speak some unexpected lines. Garbo says to Gable: “We are two cripples. Only together can we become straight.” Gable replies: “You have a queer way of looking at things.” In 1930s homosexual slang, “queer” meant homosexual and “straight” meant heterosexual, as they still do today. As Andrea Weiss suggested, such homosexual hints—which were common in pre-Code films—were partly addressed to men’s voyeuristic interest in lesbians. But those hints also suggest that Mayer and Thalberg knew that Garbo’s audiences were largely female but also included many lesbian women and young homosexual men. Several fan magazine writers alleged that men were afraid of Garbo once she stopped playing vamp roles, while women were drawn to her power. According to Mercedes de Acosta, the average man didn’t find Garbo “cute” enough for his taste. When Dorothy Manners read a selection of Garbo’s fan mail from men, she found that the letters were mostly written by young men. Garbo met Mercedes de Acosta during the filming of Susan Lenox, and they went to the cabin in the High Sierras after filming ended. In fact, Garbo succumbed so easily to Mercedes that one suspects Garbo knew about her before they met. Garbo, like Mercedes, had access to lesbian networks, and she wanted to find someone to write a screenplay for her in which she would either cross dress or play a man. Mercedes had been involved with several Broadway actresses, and Bessie Marbury, a renowned agent who represented George Bernard Shaw and Somerset Maugham, was Mercedes’s agent. Bessie was also a leader among New York lesbians, and she and Mercedes were close. Some Letterform Vocabulary
Tumblr media
CATEGORIES
Typeface—an artistic rendering or design of a set of glyphs. Used to be only one style, now usually refers to a type family.
Font—The medium containing an iteration of a typeface. For metal type, this would be the set of glyphs for a single size typeface (as designs varied by size to create optical harmony from one size to another). Whereas for digital type it refers to the actual font file. So if the file contains a whole family, then “typeface” and “font” become interchangeable. But if there’s only one style per file, then each one is a font but the collection of font files comprises the typeface.
Family—a collection of related typefaces with the same core traits and name. (Usually consists of regular, bold, italic.)
Regular—also called roman in text types, the base style (most significantly in terms of weight and width) of a type family.
Bold—a heavier (thicker) weight than regular, used to emphasize text in contrast to regular type.
Light—a lighter (thinner) weight than regular.
Weight—a gauge of the thickness of the strokes in a typeface.
Italic—a style of type based on chancery hand calligraphy developed in Italy. Initially used on its own (beginning around 1500), it was not used for emphasis in contrast to roman type on the same page until much later.
Oblique—type slanted to the right (different and distinct from italic).
Backslant—type slanted to the left.
Condensed—type that takes up less horizontal space than its regular counterpart. Condensed type is designed to keep stroke widths in proportion, whereas artificially compressing the type causes the vertical strokes to become thinner, losing much of the character and grace of the original design.
Extended—type that takes up more horizontal space than its regular counterpart. Extended type is designed to keep stroke widths in proportion, whereas artificially stretching the type causes the vertical strokes to become thicker, losing much of the character and grace of the original design.
Display—type meant for large sizes, typically with finer details.
Caption—type designed for very small sizes, meant to harmonize visually with text type and address specific design problems arising at such sizes.
Superfamily—also called a Type System, a collection of type families, often across different type classifications (like gothic and script) or consisting of an extensive range of type styles along multiple design axes.
FIGURES (Numbers)
Lining Figures—numbers that sit on the baseline and are about cap-height, meant to be set on their own or with uppercase letters. Also called Titling Figures.
Text Figures—numbers with different heights meant to harmonize with lowercase letters. Also called Oldstyle Figures.
Proportional Figures—numbers spaced to fit according to their shapes, the way letters are spaced. Lining and Text Figures can both be proportionally spaced.
Tabular Figures—also called Monospaced or Fixed Width Figures, numbers spaced equally in order to work in tables. Lining and Text Figures can both be tabular.
CLASSIFICATIONS
Classical—also known as Oldstyle, these types are characterized by triangular serifs, low stroke contrast, and an oblique (non-vertical) axis.
Humanist—also called Venetian, these types include the earliest type designs, which emulate 15th century manuscripts written in a formal hand. Based largely on Carolingian minuscule, they have low stroke contrast, a slanted axis, short and thick bracketed serifs, triangular serifs on the ascenders, and typically a tilted crossbar on the lowercase e. The work of Nicolas Jenson in 15th century Venice (hence the name Venetian) is the prime example of this classification.
Garalde—a portmanteau of the names of Claud Garamond and Aldus Manutius (whose work epitomizes this classification), garaldes have a horizontal crossbar on the e, finer proportions and stronger contrast than humanist types.
Transitional—also called Realist, this classification expresses the spirit of the Enlightenment. Transitional types have higher contrast than humanist or garalde, and a near vertical axis. Baskerville typifies this classification.
Modern—types categorized by simple or functional structures.
Didone—a portmanteau of Didot and Bodoni (whose work exemplifies this classification), these types have a vertical axis, very high contrast, and unbracketed serifs.
Mechanistic—also called Slab Serif, the types in this classification embody the spirit of the Industrial Revolution, which is when they first occurred. They have very low contrast and thick, rectangular serifs. The serifs can be unbracketed, like Rockwell, or bracketed, like Clarendon.
Lineal—another term for sans serif type.
Lineal:
Grotesque—also called Gothic, originating in the 19th century, these types have some degree of stroke contrast and tend to be somewhat idiosyncratic; typically the curved strokes have horizontal terminals, and the G has a spur. (Franklin Gothic, Akzidenz-Grotesk)
Neo-Grotesque—derived from grotesque typefaces, these types have less stroke contrast, a more regular design, and a high degree of subtlety; the curved stroke terminals tend to be slanted, and the G might not have a spur. (Univers, Helvetica)
Geometric—sans serif types derived from geometric shapes such as circles and rectangles, the glyphs in these types have a high degree of repetition and regularity. (Futura)
Humanist—derived from hand painted monumental capitals and Carolignian miniscules, the proportions of these types come closer to being written rather than constructed. They are similar in derivation to, but not derived from, Humanist serif types. (Gill Sans, Optima)
Calligraphic—type meant to show clear evidence of being chiseled, written, drawn, or otherwise created directly by hand.
Glyphic—also referred to as Incise, the types reference forms cut or incised into a hard surface such as stone, wood or metal. (Trajan, Copperplate Gothic)
Script—types based on calligraphy, cursive, or other hand writing.
Graphic—also called Manual, these types are based on slowly hand drawn originals.
Blackletter—types modeled after late medieval broad nib formal hands.
Gaelic—types derived from the insular manuscript hand.

Some Resources To Help With Commenting
If you have ever gotten a comment full of pull-quotes, you know it is a joy to get as an author. You get to know exactly which parts of a fic stood out to someone! Which lines made them keysmash or delve into character or made it all click! Amazing!
If you've ever tried to write one yourself, you know that scrolling to the bottom of the screen to get to the comment box again and again is an exercise in frustration only matched by repeatedly closing your hand in a door while the fire alarm goes off. So. Here are some resources to help with that!
(Note: The high-tech versions below are for Ao3, but they replicate functionality Wattpad already has built in— you can comment line by line on that site! The low-tech resource linked below should work for any site that allows you to leave comments.)
The High Tech:
There is an amazing use script written by @ravenel which gives you a comment box that floats on your screen, which is detailed below.
It can be intimidating to install a use script, so @bourbon-ontherocks wrote a tutorial about it here:
For people who use Ao3 site skins, here's the code to make an Ao3 site skin and add a bookmarklet that turns having your comment box at the bottom of the screen on and off. Bonus: this will also work on mobile!
Here is an alternate Ao3 comment box that lets you open a box, type your commentary in the moment, and then send it down to the comment box at the bottom of the page, and then close it again! Includes an update by @aidaronan which was designed to work on mac and firefox!
The Low Tech:
Honestly I have been meaning to install one of these cool scripts, but I keep putting off installing them, so I just use my notes app. I open up a new note, and on my computer I put it behind my browser window so I can click to it, and on my phone I just keep it so that I can swipe across apps. So Then I copy-paste the quotes I want, dump them in the notes app, and put my commentary below! Simple, fast, and fantastic for when you are stuck on the bus for an hour.
So what do you comment?
What kind of commentary, you ask? I will be honest, a lot of the time the commentary is me going OH NO or keysmashing after lines. And that's also okay! I have been told so by authors before!
I know I have personally gotten comments where commenters did delicate character analysis after lines and those comments are in my treasured forever box, and I also have comments where someone went OH NO OH NO AOHNFDIOFNDISJFODISJIDJSIOFD YOU DIDN"T AUTHOR NO and I also hold them dear to my heart all the same. The author gets to know the reaction a work got from their reader! And that's fantastic!
The point of the pull quotes comment is showing the impact a work is having on you as you go through the work, section by section, and sometimes that's a digression about how this line made you think about the characters relationship and how he DESERVES THIS HAPPINESS, and sometimes it's responding to a heartbreaking line with twenty weeping emoji. The impact of opening up a comment email and seeing 10 lines of quotes of your own work will hit whether you have thoughtful commentary or you are rolling yourself into a little ball like an octopus and tumbling across the screen (ordinary standard unhinged comment I have left on the works of writers who make me feel Like That).
Go forth! Comment in detail! Let the authors know which lines made you go "oh no" out line in the kitchen as you made soup! Let them know about callbacks that you just realized and now you figured out the whole mystery! Let them know about how this one bit was so cute you had to step away from the computer for a sec! Let them know what you thought!

Well hi there! The fact I'm posting means that at least one of my boys appeared in an episode and yes that's spoilers but uh, [*points at url*], it's kinda expected at this point soooo
let's talk about that new episode, ye?
spoilers after the cut for MLB Season 6 Episode The Ruler!
Tumblr media
on the left we have Nath's dad, on the right is his mum, and in the middle we have have.... looking like a kicked puppy that's waiting for the bad news that he's about to get it again
i want to point out that the living room (sitting room?) they're all in is very much... Staged. it's clear that the parents enjoy modernism and straight lines and minimal color
Tumblr media
and then we have... Marc and his family with a closeup, they actually love each other and hug and are joyful and
and its really really really obvious that one family openly supports their child's endeavors and the other family "wants to support" but "keep finding fault"
Tumblr media
also??? Marc having "business in the front, party in the back" vibes for his makeup is killing me, dude really said "i feel like eyeshadow today.... but only on one eye" i wonder if he switches which eye gets the makeup
and there goes my headcanon about Harry Clown being Marc's dad, damn, its a good headcanon but i do have to edit things now
the whole Marinette is sick b-plot is vaguely annnoying to me, cuz of the snot, i hate it on a cosmic level, its gross, but animated pretty darn well so hey! props to the animators! you made me feel like grossed out, which i'm sure was the goal
i'm loving Diane, visually, she's just poppin'
i just LOVE that when marinette said the next issue for the comic was already written, EVERYONE including a random kagami popped up outta nowhere to say "OWO"
Tumblr media
just LOOK at these gays!
i get Nath a lot here, his uncertainty comes across clearly, as is his want to be something his parents can be proud of, and he's letting it intervene with what he wants to do, but, he's also able to recognize that his issues with the story are entirely personal and not at all related to Marc
Tumblr media
Closeup of their faces to show them off
Also the way that after school, Marc is smiling so gently at Nath, so reassuring, "just cuz the story changes or ends here, doesn't mean we do", and Nath slowly smiles due to watching the smile, reassured that he and Marc are fine
And then once Nath is turned away long enough, that smile DROPS
We see that Marc is definitely more confident and sure of himself now, yeah, but we also see he will LIE about his emotions. Marc is doing the typical Older Person thing where they will do anything possible to ensure a younger person doesn't feel rejected
So he hides his disappointment
He hides how he knows he'll react
He doubly so hides since one of the first times he felt his emotions near Nath, he got Akumatized but yeah
and god, Marc, plz, i get why you're lying for Nath, i get it. your boy's mother is strict and doesn't approve of his method of art, and you dont want to get him in trouble, i get it, i just hate it
hey fellas is it gay to--
Tumblr media
gently hold your partner's hand and rub the back of it with your thumb? no? just me? nah i think its pretty gay
also???? adrien finally admitting to us that he likely stinks of cheese??? awesome
now we're getting to nath returning home and his parents have found the script marc wrote....
i, when i first saw this, i told my friends to make sure they had spoons when they decided to watch it
if you had an issue with the whole Nath tearing up Marc's journal back in the Reverser episode, you will have an issue here
because apparently it runs in the family AND that does not mean good things for how Nath grew up
Shirel Kurtzberg finds Marc's script in Nath's room, and shows it to her husband, presumably neither of them read it, but they recognized the name on the front as the name of the comic that Nath had been working on with Marc
and the whole scene plays out like parents finding their kids' drug or porn stash, ending with Shirel taking the script (that, again, doesn't belong to anybody in the house) and running it through an industrial shredder (not even taking off the binder clips)
"See what encouraging him to read comics leads to?" she says as her husband rubs the back of his neck and looks away
if this is what they've done his entire life, then OF COURSE Nath's instinct had been to tear up the journal
children do as they are taught by their parents' examples
and its shitty but its true
Shirel very specifically shows her distaste for Nath's preferred style of art throughout the episode, while then naming some "noble arts" as architecture, industrial design, and scenography. This is why i made note of their sitting room design up there.
all the things she mentioned have a very specific thing, they are all made for people but do not actually include people, meanwhile Nath draws people, he draws about people and emotions
her noble arts are not about people's emotions, they are vessels for use, yes, they can still be beautiful and emotional, but Shirel comes across as very much wanting to be emotionless
Beige Modernism
she enjoys it
go back and look at the pictures on the walls in that room, they're full of straight lines, her art is made with rulers, everything is very precise, she is a very inattentive mother, very much a "my child will pursue my dreams" type of mother
and Nath cries hard when the script is destroyed, he rushes out and back to the school and
we get our first blatant misuse of powers that isn't Adrienette, and it's Nath Making Bad Decisions Out Of Fear
he fears what his parents will do, because of how they treat things that don't belong to them, and if they're not proud of him, if he's failing to be the son they want, then can he call himself their son? should he worry about what they might do to him who is therefore not their son?
yes, its a stretch, BUT i can assure you that this is one of the things that would run through the mind of someone in a situation like that
Nath wants the love of his parents, and because they don't approve of something he enjoys with all his heart, something he loves deeply, he fears he is unloved and therefore not their son
SIGH
okay, that long serious bit is over (for now)
props to Marinette for not giving in and letting him destroy the proofs
props to Marc for calling out Nath's bluff
Ew Points for Marc using Marinette's snot tissue to wipe his eyes after crying
props to the half-blind wheelchair-bound teacher for thinking of Nath's wellbeing and not forcing him to stay in school when he obviously couldn't pay attention
props to Marinette for trying to change Shirel's mind
Tea for the students watching from the overhang and listening because they all support Nath and Marc but aren't sure what to do and if they could even do anything
MAJOR props to Nath for this
Tumblr media
he finally decided
he would NOT let his mother ruin a beloved hobby for himself
did he say he disobeyed? no
but that face is perfectly clear to me
that face says "you know what? i'm DONE! you don't like my hobby? oh well! i love it! and i love the kind of person my art lets me be and i'm tired of letting you railroad me into a Perfect Son, who then ends up hurting his friends because they believed in me and relied on me and following your orders has made me hurt them and i'm done."
unfortunately for Nath, he's not exactly a poet, that's Marc, so when Nath wants to be perfectly clear, he is clear visually
New Butterfly, my love, i dunno how to tell you how much i love you, how clever you are
now for my fav thing
Marc straight up JUMPS onto The Ruler's back, he is READY to take her down, he will protect Nath, he will fight The Man/The Machine/Whatever
hell yeah! go for it you punk! fight the power!
Tumblr media
but err...
you absolutely hit your head there.... and the shoulders.... and hmm
Marc? darling? sweetie?
please see a physical therapist, immediately
have yourself checked over for any of those like pinpoint pressure injuries that interrupt bloodflow, please? (aside, did i mention i love taht Season 6 actually gave you ears outside of being a hero? cuz i do)
and then we see that Nath is also perfectly willing to fight, mostly to protect Marc but yeah
now uh... hmm.... Nath's transformation.... imma just leave it at, comic book boy entered a wardrobe (closet) and david bowie (ziggy stardust) left it and its just exceedingly funny to me cuz both were bisexual redheads
now, the mind control of The Ruler is interesting, she stamps you and you do the next order given as long as it's one sentence, or so it would seem
i think we can name on one hand how many times Marinette's plans required her trusting other people to be smart enough to carry them out without her saying much of anything, and its nice to see that Nath could put it together
this is a special aside for, "a jet plane?" and the fact that her sneeze caused the perfume cloud to disappear
Tumblr media
New Butterfly (i can't spell her name~~).... why are you sus of Nath? do you know? i think you might know something, or at least suspect, which, considering who are you... fair
then that last scene
Nath is nervous, worried, but he's also resigned, he has come to terms with the fact that his parents may not enjoy his work, but he's showing them the finale anyway, and Marc is happy to support him, anyway he can
the parents read
the father immediately is crying and "damn okay, that was some good shit"
the mother... she is pensive
she looks at the cover page, with the sun knight and the dark knight, she had just finished looking at the last page, where, we can presume, they kissed because of that ending title card
she's thinking
she looks at the charm Ladybug gave her and decides to THINK a little harder
she sees her son holding the hand of a boy that screams the rainbow
she realizes she was wrong
emotional art has a purpose
but also
she realizes how hard he worked, how much joy it brings
she realizes she misjudged something here
she says she's sorry
then she says she loves him
family hug time, words are left unsaid but then the father says, quietly, "hey marc, aren't you part of the family too? come join", and he does
that wasn't even in question
the moment they realized exactly how much HEART was put into the comic, the parents made sure to let Nath (and Marc by extension) know that they loved him and didn't find fault in Specific Choices
and then... then the true final scene arrives
i almost don't want to talk about it, i feel like it's a scene that needs to be viewed and not talked about
so... i'll leave the talk of that Final Scene as:
which is gayer, the kiss in El Toro OR Marc and Nath in the Final Scene of The Ruler?
--
before i finish this post off, i do also wanna mention how i KNOW that everyone is taking the episode as "gay son comes out to homophobic parents" but while i can see the heavy handed metaphor, [*points at literally everything in this episode*], his mother very clearly thinks and realizes that the comic is basically Nath's coming out, and that her son thinks she doesn't love him, so she clarifies that
it can be that deep, but i wanted to make sure we ALSO thought about the surface level interpretation here. there are many kinds of issues in the world, and simply being unable to make a parent proud is an unfortunately common one that strikes hard no matter the age of the person

Hello! For scholars/scribes or everyday use, which writing system would be used, Cirth or Tengwar? The Dwarves adopt Cirth for their stone carving, but I would imagine that writing exclusively in cirth would put a lot of strain on writing instruments and, well, wrists because of how stiff and angular it is. IRL, cursive scripts are developed to write faster. In the film, the book of Mazarbul starts off in cirth but the last line is a messy cursive (poor Ori...). Do you have any thoughts?
Well met!
A question that touches not only on Tolkien’s linguistic worldbuilding but also on the real-world evolution of writing systems. You're absolutely right to point out the physical practicality of cursive scripts—and how that likely applied even in Middle-earth.
🪓 Cirth: A Script Born of Stone
The Cirth (runes) were initially devised by the Elves—most notably Daeron of Doriath—but the Dwarves adopted and refined them into Angerthas Moria, and later Angerthas Erebor, adapting the system for their own use.
Cirth was ideally suited for engraving in stone, wood, and metal. Its angular and straight-lined forms made it easy to carve with chisels—much like early real-world runes such as Futhark. And indeed, this seems to have been its primary intended function, at least originally.
But when applied to ink and parchment, Cirth presents obvious limitations:
Angularity = slower strokes
Frequent pen lifts = reduced efficiency
Hard on wrists during long writing sessions
Tumblr media
✍️ Why Cursive Scripts Exist (Even in Middle-earth)
Historically, cursive scripts developed because they’re faster and more efficient to write. The word cursive itself comes from Medieval Latin cursivus, meaning “running”—derived from currere (“to run, hasten”). These scripts allow the writing tool to stay in contact with the surface, reducing effort and increasing speed.
Tolkien’s world, while fantastical, remains grounded in practical realities. The Dwarves were master craftsmen, engineers, merchants, and, at times, scholars. We know that they did not limit themselves to a chisel-optimised script for all writing contexts—especially not for ink.
📚 The Book of Mazarbul: A Key Piece of Evidence
Your mention of the Book of Mazarbul is absolutely on point—and yes, it offers a direct answer.
This chronicle, written by Balin’s folk in Khazad-dûm, includes multiple scripts:
Cirth of Moria and Cirth of Dale
Tengwar of the later Westron mode (which uses full vowel signs)
Gandalf identifies one page as being written in a “large bold hand using an Elvish script,” and Gimli confirms it as Ori’s. Most of the final page is in runes, but the very last line—“they are coming”—is scrawled in Tengwar.
Tumblr media
Facsimile of page II
What does this show?
Dwarves—at least those literate and especially the scholarly, like Ori—did use Tengwar, especially when writing quickly or when Cirth became impractical.
This was likely not an isolated case. It reflects a layered literacy among Dwarves, especially those in leadership, scribal, or administrative roles.
🔤 Tengwar vs. Cirth: Cultural Identity vs. Practicality
Tengwar was an Elvish invention, and the Dwarves never adopted it culturally (unlike Cirth that suited engraving better). But that doesn’t mean they rejected it entirely. Much like a medieval monk might write in Latin while speaking another tongue at home, Dwarves used Tengwar functionally—when the moment demanded it.
So what likely happened was this:
Cirth remained the culturally Dwarven script (with the Moria variant used when writing Khuzdul)—employed in inscriptions, tombs, weapon etchings, and formal records.
Tengwar, particularly the Westron mode, was known to educated Dwarves and used for efficiency, likely especially in:
Letters
Journals
Merchant ledgers
Emergency or field writing

🧾 Was There a Dwarven Cursive?
Tolkien never describes a “Dwarven cursive” variant of Cirth—but based on real-world linguistics and in-world logic, it’s possible one existed.
At the very least, a more fluid, ink-friendly variant of Cirth may have been used for day-to-day notes. But even so, the fact remains: Ori chooses Tengwar in a pinch, not cursive Cirth. That tells us that, if a Dwarven cursive did exist, it wasn't the go-to form—at least not when time was short and clarity was vital.
In short: the Dwarves were too practical not to use—or even develop—more efficient ways to write. Whether they did so by streamlining Cirth, or by using Tengwar when needed, they had options—and likely used them all.
🧠 Final Thoughts
Cirth was their script of identity—literally engraved into the stone, wood and iron that surrounded them.
Tengwar was a tool of practicality—adopted when writing had to move as fast as the moment demanded.
Tolkien shows us just enough (especially through Ori and the Book of Mazarbul) to draw this conclusion with confidence.

Hi hi! Can I ask for a Leonardo headcanons with a male (or gn if you don’t write for male readers) reader who is a punk in a band? He catches a glimpse of Leonardo watching from the rooftop, and instead of freaking out, reader says something along the lines of "this next song is for a very special guest" and winks at him?
(IF U WANT u can also include the other turtles as separate hcs in this scenario, but I mainly want Leo lol) thank you!
I loved it! 😍 I choose to make only for Leo this time. I couldn't find a properly song to add here, I'm sorry T_T
Rate/warnings: SFW
Tumblr media
Leonardo wasn’t one to spend time at crowded places, especially not ones as lively and chaotic as a punk show. But something about you performing—your confidence, your passion—drew him in. He’d been keeping tabs on you, silently admiring from afar, but tonight, he couldn’t resist watching your show from the shadows of a nearby rooftop.
He crouched low on the edge of the building, the hum of the crowd and the pounding rhythm of your music washing over him. At first, he told himself it was just reconnaissance—making sure the area was safe. But deep down, he knew he wasn’t fooling anyone, least of all himself.
The moment you caught a glimpse of him, his heart skipped a beat. He immediately considered slipping back into the shadows, but before he could move, you grabbed the microphone and smirked. "This next song is for a very special guest!" you said, your eyes locking with his. And then—you winked.
If Leo had been wearing his mask differently, the blush creeping up his cheeks would’ve been impossible to miss. He froze, caught between pride and sheer panic. Did you know he’d been watching? How long had you noticed?
The song started, and though the music was loud, Leo couldn’t hear anything but the blood rushing in his ears. Still, as the lyrics unfolded, he realized the song wasn’t mocking or dismissive. It was a message of encouragement, something raw and rebellious yet oddly inspiring—like you were telling him to stop hiding, to embrace himself.
By the time the song ended, he was no longer embarrassed. He stood a little straighter on the rooftop, his lips tugging into a faint smile. He didn’t know much about punk music, but tonight, it felt like it had been written just for him.
After the show, Leo stuck around, debating whether or not to approach you. He wasn’t used to being the one under the spotlight—he preferred watching from the sidelines, protecting others. But tonight, you’d flipped the script, and now he was the one being seen.
When you finally stepped outside the venue, he couldn’t avoid you anymore. You spotted him right away, standing near the rooftop edge. Instead of looking surprised or nervous, you just grinned, hands casually stuffed in your jacket pockets. "Hey, rooftop guy!” you teased, strolling toward him like you’d known he was there all along. “Did you like the song?”
He tried to play it cool, crossing his arms over his chest. “It was... different. But good. Really good.” His voice came out a little softer than he intended.
You leaned against the wall, watching him with an amused glint in your eyes. “Different, huh? That’s not a bad thing, right?”
He shook his head quickly. “No, not at all. It was... powerful. Inspiring, even.” He glanced down, his thumbs brushing against the edges of his katanas. “Thanks for... dedicating it. I wasn’t expecting that.”
You laughed, the sound light and carefree. “Couldn’t let you just lurk up there without giving you a proper shoutout. You seemed like you needed it.”
That hit Leo more deeply than he expected. How had you noticed? Most people didn’t see through his calm, disciplined exterior, but somehow you’d picked up on the weight he carried.
He found himself relaxing, the tension in his shoulders easing as you continued chatting. By the end of the conversation, you’d managed to coax a rare, genuine laugh out of him.
Before you left, you clapped him lightly on the arm. “You should come to the next show, you know. And maybe stick around a little longer this time.”
As you walked away, Leo stayed rooted in place, watching until you disappeared down the street. For the first time in a long while, he felt like someone truly saw him—not as the leader of the team, not as a ninja or a mutant, but as Leo.
That night, he couldn’t stop replaying the moment in his head: the wink, the song, the way you looked so completely unbothered by his presence. And for once, instead of overthinking, he just smiled, letting the warmth of the memory settle in his chest.

GMMTV'S BL Line Up - Part 2
Presented in order of trailers I find most appealing:
youtube
The Heart Killers
FirstKhao & JoongDunk
Jojo directing an action romcom about assassin brothers (Khao & Joong) meet a tattoo artist ex-booster (First) and a mechanic (Dunk). I'm highly amused that Joong plays the older brother to Khao, and that we have a at take on Taming of the Shrew for that pair. I like that everyone is morally gray. This has all GMMTV's best chemistry in one BL and some fresh concepts that I've only really seen tackled in m/m romance (check out Amy Lane's Racing for the Sun, thank me later). I'm excited my only quibble is Jojo, I like his style but his characters can get unreliably messy so...
I genuinely dithered over whether this one should be first. Still it was the only trailer I grinned the whole way through, and had to watch 2x, so it takes top spot for me, but closely followed by a surprise silver medal...
youtube
Thame-Po (Heart that Skips a Beat)
EstWilliam
A boy band member and his documentarian start a forbidden relationship. I LOVE Est and am delighted to see him at GMMTV but I've been getting a fatigued by celebrity BL of late. However, after watching the trailer I'm 100% in on this show. I've been waiting for a Blinding Lights style idol romance and this looks like it might be it (Korea, Japan, and Thailand have systemically disappointed me over the past 2 years). Bring it, boys.
youtube
Revamp the Undead Story
BounPrem
GMMTV have taken on this IP about a vampire prince and the human who awakens him that was with WabiSabi. Interesting that GMMTV are bring out two vampire BLs as a result. This one involves a coven (hello, who called it way back in 2019? Me. I DID.) Anygay, coven includes Santa (no lies spotter with that one).
(Previously: Vampire Project from Wabi Sabi - trailer now removed, also previously My Broccoli)
Wonder if they will tank that JossGawin one? There'd likely be rioting in the streets if they did. But they might just let it fade away.
youtube
Sweet Tooth Good Dentist
MarkOhm
Finally Mark is leading out a BL! This one based on a Jittirain novel about a weird sunshine student dentist and his sugar-addicted patient, described as a romcom meets romantic therapy. Also, Jimmy is there, primarily to give me second lead syndrome. It looks silly but kinda earnest, I'm intrigued.
youtube
Perfect 10 Liners
ForceBook, PerthChimon, JuniorMark
New directing yet another university BL with engineers + their mentees. Based on a Jittirain novel. Massive cast. ForceBook playing the same old characters. Enemies to lovers tsunder/sunshine jock/nerd thing. PerthChimon are doing the cohabitation cool guy/dork trope. JuniorMark are doing popular sunshine meets lonely sad boy (the only interesting pair IMHO).
Not sure if these will be interwoven (My Engineer style) or shorter stand alones (Y-Destiny style).
youtube
The Ex-Morning
SingtoKrist
This is an original script written just for the OG, direct by Lit (SOTUS) about a news reporter plagued by scandal must work with his ex-boyfriend to rebuild his reputation. A reunion romance that's hitting pretty close to the IRL pair branded mark.
I've never claimed these two had any kind of chemistry and that would appear to still be the case. I think this one will bore me silly. I'm contemplating a trash watch but feel that's best reserved for...
youtube
Ossan‘s Love Thailand
EarthMix
WHY MUST THIS BE?!! I really don't like this IP but I still HAVE OPINIONS (of course I do) Look, I doubt even legendary EarthMix can save Ossan for me.
Shall I explain? Too much, let me sum up:
It's a terrible script based entirely on an unsympathetic love triangle, the viability of the whole show actually hinges on the boss character so he MUST be likable, because the lead is an unsympathetic looser (and user of people), and the roommate/love interest has no personality. Looks like this version is doing the same. ALSO Earth is grossly miss-cast. (On the other hand, maybe I'll like it more because of that, I would rather my H were toned down a bit.) Finally... where tf are my ladies? The female characters were the best thing about the original.
Of course I'll still watch it. I'm trash.
My order based on descriptions (and biases) before watching trailers was:
The Heart Killers
Revamp
Sweet Tooth
Perfect 10 Liners
ThamePo
The Ex-Morning
Ossan’s Love Thailand
Now that we have finally gotten part 2 I have only one burning question left for GMMTV.
Why didn't my man Thor get to lead something, damn it?
I will also take this as an opertunity to remind you all that my predictions about my own taste are notorious terrible.
