for a series about delinquents, wind breaker is so genuinely wholesome, it's the perfect series for it's target demographic. it has some of the most non toxic male characters i've ever seen in the genre, who advocate for things like giving back to your community and supporting your friends. it's just super sweet. there's also trans representation that is apparently handled pretty well? i haven't gotten there yet, but in only 31 chapters this series has definitely grown on me quite a bit.
im just a big fan of shonen series that teach boys to have empathy, and that kindness is a strength to be admired. i also havent (yet) seen a single instance of sexual harassment used as a joke.
(also i might get hate for this but umemiya>gojo there i said it)

hmm idk where the request page is but can a request a short cute little oneshot of dogday and angel cuddling after a long day with Damian?
God this shouldn't have taken me this long I'm sorry! I hope this is good for you all!! T~T
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was 8’o clock in the morning when my alarm went off. I sluggishly turned it off and got up to go use the bathroom. As I got up from the bed I noticed that DogDay wasn’t in bed. I looked over to the bathroom to see if he was in there, but the light was off. Odd. I then walked out of our room to go check on Damian. I knocked on his door but didn’t get an answer. I knocked again and still no answer. I was getting worried now. “Damian, you awake kiddo?” I said while opening his door. No sight of Damian anywhere in his room; however, his bed was made.
I went down the stairs to see if maybe they both were in the kitchen. As I walked over to the kitchen something in my body told me to look out the window. When I looked out the window I sighed in relief and smiled. There standing outside was Damian and DogDay ready for today. They were both smiling really big and DogDay was wagging his tail. I opened the front door and leaned against the door frame. “I’m guessing you guys are ready for the park today?” “Yes!” “Yes!”
---------------
As we approached the park DogDay and Damian were practically jumping out of their seats. Right as I pulled into a spot and put the car in park, they both unbuckled their seatbelts and bolted out of the car. “Okay....guess I’m unloading by myself then...”
---------------
I found a nice, shaded area under a tree and decided to set the picnic blanket down in this spot. As I flattened out the blanket I looked over and saw that DogDay and Damian were already playing soccer together. It melted my heart seeing this.
They played together for a good thirty minutes before coming back over to where I was. “Have a good game you too?” “Whew. I think our little kiddo has been holding back Angel. I’ve never seen him play like that before.” “That’s because Playtime was small for playing soccer.” Damian laughed and sat down on the blanket. While grabbing a sandwich and taking a bite out of it Damian said, “Hey mom, after lunch can you show me how to fly a kite?” “Don’t talk with your mouth full kiddo, but yes I can.” I looked over to DogDay and saw that he was laying down with his eyes closed. “Would you like to join us dear?” With his eyes still closed DogDay smiled and said, “No thank you Angel, I think I’ll take a little nap.”
---------------
“That’s it kiddo! You’re doing it!” Damian had never flown a kite before, yet he picked up on it fast! I took out my phone and started taking pictures of Damian. “Too bad Dad is taking a nap.” Damian said while pulling the sting on the kite to keep it steady. “Yeah, too bad.” I said and looked behind me but when I looked over to where DogDay was he wasn’t there. I turned and looked back to Damain but was met with DogDays face close to mine. “Boo!” “AH!” I jumped back a little bit. DogDay laughed while Damian rolled his eyes. “Dad, you know mom gets scared easily.” “I know kiddo, but your mother looks cute when she’s scared.” I took a deep breath before saying, “Uh-huh. I don’t think I look cute in the Halloween pictures.” I shiver at the thought of Halloween, what a terrifying day that was.
DogDay closed his eyes and sniffed up into the air before saying, “We should leave soon the air smells grouchy.” “Grouchy?” Damian asked while pulling down the kite. “Means it’s going to storm.” “Oh.” Me and Damian both said. “Boo, so much for a fun day at the park.” Damian kicked at the ground. “Hold on there kiddo, who said we couldn’t have fun in the rain?” Suddenly Damians eyes lit up. “You mean we can play in the rain?!!” I nodded my head yes and Damian jumped up into the air all happy like. “Woohoo! Yay!” Damian then ran towards the car. Me and DogDay just looked at each other and smiled before heading over to our picnic spot to pick up everything.
---------------
Once we got home is when the rain started to come down. We all hurried inside and changed into our raincoats and boots. Damian was the first one to head back outside, followed by myself and then DogDay. There were already so many puddles forming around our driveway. Damian splashed in them, and I would also splash in them but only with one foot; didn’t want to make a big splash on him.
I wish that could’ve been said for my husband. He jumped in all the puddles he could find and managed to get Damian and I soaked; despite wearing raincoats. “Oops, sorry...”
---------------
The fire place was going and mine and Damians clothes laid near the fire to dry them off. “But I don’t want to take the icky medicine.” “People who get their feet wet must learn to take their medicine.” I said while holding a spoon full of medicine for him. “But medicine is ickyyyy.” “Hey, what happened to my strong and tough boy huh?” “I’m still your strong and tough boy dad, but medicine is sooo grossss.” DogDay croutched down in front of Damian and said, “Me and your mom are gonna take the medicine too, and you know I’m not a fan of medicine either.”
Damian looked like he was in deep thought before he opened his mouth for the medicine. I put the spoon in his mouth, and he closed his mouth and swallowed down the medicine. “Taste like strawberry!” I then grabbed another spoon for DogDay and handed it to him to take. DogDay looked at it for a while before taking the spoon and putting it in his mouth. “Mhm, not bad. Where did you find this kind of flavor medicine Angel?” I poured myself a spoonful while saying, “Just at the drug store. I just looked through a lot of bottles trying to find a good flavor one.” I took the spoon and put it in my mouth.
After we all took the medicine, we all relaxed in the living room watching a movie. Damian was asleep laying on the floor with a pillow and a blanket while me and DogDay were on the couch snuggled up next to each other with a blanket. I rested my head on DogDays shoulder, and he rested his head on mine. “This was a fun day.” “Mhm, I want to keep having days like these with you and Damian Angel.” “Me too.”
i want to hear the sports anime manifesto
Tumblr media
Okay short version:
My life was a sports anime for a bit, and watching sports anime makes me nostalgic for those days.
Medium version:
The typical shonen sports anime deals with themes of camaraderie, ambition, and the intersections of camaraderie and ambition, which ALWAYS hits me right in the chest.
I'm not an ambitious person by nature, but--you know that one poem floating around on here, the one about the moth that wants nothing more than to fly into the flame, and how it would be nice to feel that kind of all consuming passion? Yeah, that's the feeling I get from sports anime.
And often, for the Team Sports anime, you'll get characters who have nothing in common except that they Love the Same Thing--a friendship/rivalry/(romance) formed on the basis of a shared interest. That's sweet as hell!
And they're super predictable and low stress for me. Very easy to watch! Total popcorn shows. Also I like listening to people infodump about their passions. Someone loved their Sport so much they wrote a whole-ass story about it, so yeah, eat that shit up.
Long version:
The Socioeconomic Inequalities of High School Sports
In high school, I was on a crappy underfunded soccer team (with a healthy dose of sexism) and due to [sports league division reasons] the schools we played against were almost exclusively private schools.
I cannot describe how existential it is to be wearing a hand-me-down formerly white-turned-disgusting-gray uniform that's at least five years old when playing against a team that gets brand new windbreakers every season.
(If you've read AAB, YES this is where my obsession with the windbreakers comes from.)
(Hilariously, the guys team got windbreakers but we didn't.)
(I am not over the fucking windbreakers.)
But anyway, when you're constantly losing to private schools you get this fucking complex about it.
This should come as no surprise but like. People with the time and resources to practice their Thing get good at their Thing.
Playing pick up soccer at the park is practice. Playing rec league soccer is organized, repeated practice.
Playing competitive club soccer is all of that, plus a coach who knows How To Coach and What The Sport Is, plus you get morale-boosting uniforms and the chance to play with and against other skilled players. So you're exposed to a lot more, and thus, you learn a lot more.
Competitive club soccer is also Expensive. Rich kids get good.
There's a reason why the "Powerhouse School" is a thing in sports anime, because it's a thing in real life. People with leisure time and money get to invest in their sports development, and everyone else gets left behind in the dust. It's basically a microcosm of capitalism.
The underdog sports story is (quite tragically) bootstraps propaganda. All you have to do is be really good and work really hard and have A LOT OF PASSION to get good at your sport! The cream rises to the top! This is a meritocracy! Let's ignore all the other factors that go into an individual's development as an athlete!
(My brother got scouted for club soccer as a kid. He actually went to tryouts and got offered a spot and a scholarship and everything, but there's SO many hidden fees after the initial registration. Uniforms, equipment, travel and accommodation, tournaments, plus like, the time sink, so we never signed him up. And equipment-wise, soccer is one of the cheapest sports you can play--just imagine the price for something like baseball or hockey.)
In sports anime, there is no reform. There is no revolution.
But sports anime isn't really about that. It's about the narratives we create when we convince ourselves that we deserve to win.
(You know what I mean. Every billionaire is convinced they're some sort of heroic underdog. The same exact kind of 'working your way up' narrative.)
Sports anime is like, the uncomplicated power fantasy of playing the game. It's a world where you are rewarded for your hard work, because it's narratively satisfying. It's a world where it's safe to want things, because you have the exact same chances as the private school kids.
I used to be an obnoxiously competitive child. Then I got all my competition beaten out of me by 3 straight years of constant losing in my clownagerie of a high school soccer team (affectionate). I am going to admit that experience made me a better person and I would not trade it for anything, but I also had to like, relearn how to want things. And maybe real life is not as equal opportunity as the world of sports anime, but I think it's good to want things.
Of course, the winner-loser dichotomy makes sense in sports because of the inherent nature of competition, but it doesn't make sense in stuff like society and economics because that's like, competing over the right to live. That's where the capitalism metaphor ends,
Does sports anime actually go into the socioeconomic inequalities of sports? No. Of course not. Giant Killing never got a season 2.
But it is something I think about when I write sports anime fic. Even if it's not the point, it influences my characterization. The ego of a prodigy character in a shitty sports program is different from the ego of a prodigy character in a rich kid sports program. I am obligated to my amateur attempts to capture the complexities of the high school sports environment in my fanfiction because I am fucking insane I had a specific high school sports experience and they do say to write what you know.
#MEG I SWEAR TO YOU I WILL READ TANGERINE AT SOME POINT#I have so many thoughts about sports anime which is tragic because sports anime is not that deep#it is never that deep#part of the reason why I got so sucked into Daiya is because of the powerhouse school setting#and the fact that Eijun was so obviously lost because he never had that kind of organized system before#people give Seidou a lot of shit for 'not helping Eijun' enough but genuinely it's because he has NO CLUE how to reach out#I poured so much brainpower into Eijun's backstory in my brain it's embarrassing as hell#*shaking fanfic authors by the shoulders* YEAH THE CUTTHROAT COMPETION SUCKS BUT YOU DONT FIX IT BY SENDING HIM TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL#I also am the only person who understands Miyuki Kazuya (exaggeration)#everyone gives him shit for the Nabe thing and look. yes he was wrong.#but I was once in that same exact situation and responded exactly the same way#Daiya no Ace is not about friendship#it's about Ambition#and people tend to make Eijun the sweet sentimental sunshine friendship guy#but he has JUST as much cutthroat ambition as Miyuki#that's why they work. that's why they understand each other#there's a whole essay I could write about Misawa but it's basically just chapter 18 of AAB#anyway if you want to watch a sports anime that does the Healthy Ambition and the Friendship Thing in the most wholesome way possible#watch Haikyuu. it really is the perfect sports anime.#shame the fanfic is 99% ship because the sports aspect of it is SUPER sweet#asks#jumpstrike#I'm answering jumpstrike but Tav I hope you see this too#lazuli talks#sports anime
(Fr tho don't expect this to be done soon. Or at all. GEM spin-offs like this are low priority, I was just having a rough night and didn't want to turn on my lamp to draw or set up my desk for the Wacom, yk?)
I'll post random bullshit snippets of my OC writing with 0 context or any intention of ever actually finishing the story, but the idea of linking fully edited fanfic chapters BEFORE the Entire fic is done? Absolutely fucking hellish. Anxiety inducing. I don't know what's wrong with me that causes this. I simply can not link a fic until it's fully 100% done.
Honey & Honey (ハニー & ハニー) is a realistic and autobiographical look at an adult lesbian couple living in Japan, made by Takeuchi Sachiko. The manga features Sachiko and her girlfriend Masako, as well as some of her friends, both queer and straight.
Content warnings under the cut
Transphobia: some outdated terms that are offensive and some instances of transphobia (i.e. trans persons being deadnamed). The trans characters in the story are never portrayed in a negative light but they do talk sometimes about the discrimination they face for being trans.
Homophobia: while the manga doesn't show any violent cases of homophobia, it does talk about some of the discrimination LGBTQ people face. Overall the manga is very lighthearted and never delves into heavy topics, but it was published in 2006 so you can imagine that some terms and explanations are very outdated.
Sexual assault: in chapter 29, the author shares the summary of a movie about two women who drug and sexually assault a man. It's not graphic but it's played for laughs, which is distasteful.
Id love to hear ur interpretation and analysis on falin! She’s one of my favorite characters and and I was wondering what ur thoughts on her are
Man, I struggle to think of anything I could say about Falin that others have not already said. But she's one of my favorite things about Dungeon Meshi too.
So much of the story revolves around Falin, and she's not even there. Tumblr loves to talk about haunting the narrative, but Falin might be one of the best examples of it ever put to page. She's dead. She's alive. She's dead. She's alive. She's alive but she's missing, she's alive but she isn't herself. She's dead but she might wake. She's dead but she's frozen in ice. She's alive but she's sleepwalking. They chase her ghost and they chase her body all through the story.
I think what Kui does with her is fascinating. Not just as character with a personality we can analyze, but as an object in a narrative- that's why I say she's one of my favorite things about the story, because I also mean it in a mechanical sense. As a writer, Kui's really good at misdirection- that is, setting you up to believe or expect something about a character or a plot, and then turning that on its head. It's most apparent with Kabru, but it works really well with Falin too.
Because the precious little sister is a very well known character archetype, right? So is the gentle healer. The heart of the party. The white mage girl. The damsel in distress. The martyr.
And this isn't a Laura Palmer situation, where we find out that beneath her wholesome surface there's something dark and troubled. No, Falin truly is a kind and gentle person. That isn't where the misdirection leads (and that, too, I think, is another misdirection- it's not "Plot twist, she isn't as nice as you thought!", which would almost be too easy).
The misdirection here is more about structure than about character (but also, yeah- a little about character).
What I mean is, with these archetypes firmly in mind, along with a whole other host of fantasy genre expectations, I think anyone who goes into Dungeon Meshi un-spoiled probably expects Falin's rescue to be an endgame event; at least on a subconscious level, where you're not really thinking about it but in the back of your head you're already stretching out the story to place Falin firmly in the distance. Fire breathing dragon at the bottom of the dungeon is perfect final boss material, right? Slay the dragon. Rescue the princess.
And Falin is the perfect prize in the traditional old school fantasy that the concept of the titular dungeon is a send-up to. Blonde (white), soft-spoken, sweet-natured, beloved by everyone. An angelic figure.
Maybe that's why Ryoko Kui gave her white wings.
Tumblr media
It is sort of jarring when chapter 23 rolls around and it's already time to fight the red dragon. And it takes a few chapters, but they succeed. And then Falin's impossible resurrection succeeds. But by then you guess that this is not going to be the story you expected it to be.
I want to point out that Falin spends a lot of time getting, well, babied, post-resurrection. Marcille washes her in the bath, despite Falin stating that she's capable of washing herself. Marcille schools her about her mana use despite Falin demonstrating that she is not hurting for mana, and brushes aside Falin's explanations. Both Marcille and Laios refuse to actually tell her what happened. Laios scruffs up her hair like she's a little kid and scolds her for something she can't remember doing. Marcille explicitly calls her a little kid when Falin tries to talk about how much she's grown.
Of course I'm not saying that Laios was wrong to act like a big brother, or that Marcille shouldn't be worried about taking care of her shell-shocked friend in the bath. But the framing of it clearly shows a Falin who is struggling to be heard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you'd like to address the big gay elephant in the room while we're here, I want to state for the record that- whether you read her as gay or not -I think Marcille is completely oblivious during this. Because Falin is her little friend from school. Her best friend, yes, but also the young tallman student she, in her infinite elven wisdom, had to mentor and look after. Marcille has not yet accepted that Falin is an adult now, nor has she accepted that she, herself, is only barely past teenagerhood developmentally and is not nearly as mature as she believes. Of course she'd scrub Falin in the bath and fuss over her.
Falin, meanwhile, seems more than aware of her own adult body and the inappropriate way Marcille is treating it.
Tumblr media
The mana-sharing scene is, I think, Falin trying to get a little of her own back. How do you like it, Marcille?
And she tries again in bed.
Tumblr media
Maybe she's wondering if their relationship will change now that they're grown ups. If Marcille prefers her as a little girl, or at least as a woman who lets herself be guided like one; if Marcille will react badly if Falin keeps trying to assert herself. She also might be subtly trying to signal to Marcille that bed sharing, like bathing, carries a different weight to it when you do it as adults rather than as children.
With all this in mind, the decision to turn Falin from the precious prize they rescued into to the vicious dragon they have to slay, hits a lot harder.
Falin with a powerful, monstrous, destructive body. Falin, who couldn't even stand to cause people pain from using healing spells, slaughtering half a dozen people in brutal ways. And that's not her, she's being mind-controlled, but as an object in the story she has completely flipped. From damsel to threat.
And I love that she carries a little bit of that with her when she's resurrected again.
Tumblr media
Because she's no longer the girl who's going to let herself be stifled by her brother's and her best friend's co-dependency, no matter how much she loves them. She's different now: stronger, eyes open, forging her own path instead of following in their wake. Falin is still going to come back to them again, but this time it won't be because they chased her. It'll be because they let her go.
Baby Fever- Harry blurb in honour of him becoming an uncle!
More Dadrry / Other Writing
Harry just got back from spending the day meeting his new, teeny tiny niece, and he'd hardly been able to look away- absolutely besotted by her wide and curious eyes, soft hair, and total newness to the world. His heart feels so full it could burst and all he wants is to sprinkle this overwhelming love with those most important to him.
Even on the drive home and for a good hour after arriving home, Harry can't shake the stirring of paternal possibility- especially in the presence of his wife, so lovingly and endearingly sharing supper with him. He's so infatuated with the wholesomeness swelling within, fascinated with these sudden fantasies of bringing home his own baby- a teeny, breathing product of a love so strong- being blessed by the gift of his wife, whom herself, was enough of a gift as it was.
She notices Harry's struggle to focus long before he- chalking it up to the overwhelming excitement of the day, certain that her husband was just as giddy at the arrival of his niece as she always predicted he would be. It was hard enough walking past a cute toddler without his desire to stop and coo taking over.
When asked about it, Harry sighs out contently and simply reassures, "'M just thinkin'..."
Oh, but this type of thinking isn't so easy to shake and follows Harry all the way to bed, burying itself beneath the covers beside him, tugging at his heartstrings with sweet scenarios where he cradles a sleepy infant to his chest, soothed by the softest of snores, watching his wife giggle along to incoherent baby babbles, celebrating milestones, watching them grow, and growing alongside.
Even as the next three days drone on, Harry feels like the universe had 100% overheard his secret daydreams- taunting him with anything and everything resembling children- every where he goes, every thing he does is sidelined by the aching feeling of starting a family.
After what must have been the fourth stroller rolls past, Harry cuts his run short. Realisation that this stirring within will not be going anywhere, solidifying into the desire to say it out loud, to announce and welcome this want- need- to start the next chapter of his life.
He practically bounds through the front door, sneakers squeaking along the hardwood as he urgently calls out in search of his wife., though by the time she sings back a greeting and says "In the nook" Harry has already found her- the same place she usually hides- a book balanced between her fingers, wedding ring flickering from the rays of sunset, luring him closer until he's standing right before her.
Harry drops to his knees before she has the chance to give him a proper greeting, his palms splaying out atop her thighs, and though his eyes are aflame with desperation, a hopeful smile continues to creep up and spread along his lips until his cute dimples are on full display.
Discarding her book to the side, his wife's hands find a home in his curls, gently kneading stray tufts of his silky curls, and Harry's head dips on instinct, forehead resting against her exposed leg, pressing his cheek into her fleshy skin- this only evokes a soft chuckle that slips past her lip as she smiles at him with enamoured curiosity, "What's gotten into you, huh?"
He mumbles against her skin, breath tickling and pricking goosebumps along her thighs, his hand reaching on and wrapping loosely around her calf- thumb stroking circles into her skin.
"Speak up, sweet boy," she coaxes and even after he projects, his words are still muttered into incoherence, her legs bouncing along with her chuckling chest, waiting for him to find the words.
Harry wallows in her patience for as long as it takes to just build up the confidence to match his certainty, unable to soothe all of his nerves, even by the time the rest of him has conjured up enough bravery, his statement is so soft, so vulnerable,
"Wanna have a baby." He still can't muster the courage to look her in the eye.
"Is that so?" The giddiness coursing through her is present in her tone, hiccupping her sentence, hands continuing to play with his curls, "You wanna be a daddy?"
His face feels flush with bashful excitement at the mere sound of 'you' and 'dad' in the same sentence. Harry enthusiastically nods once more against the expanse of her thigh before his face finally tilts back up to meet her fond gaze, she's beaming down at him with newfound hopefulness.
"I wanna be a dad," he finally admits aloud, and it feels so fucking good to say it, "really really wanna have a baby with you."
The sweetest smile creeps well past his wife's lips and crinkles the corner of her eyes as they twinkle back at his own with wonderment. Her nails massage along the nape of his neck before her palm gently cradles his blushy cheek and she hums contently, "Well, that's the best idea you've ever had."
