Note:
Listen to me I’ve never done anything like this before, I have written and sure I have posted one of two things and immediately abandoned them. If you want to give me constructive criticism or feedback please do I wanna get better at this kind of thing.
─── ⋅ ∙ ∘ ☽ ༓ ☾ ∘ ⋅ ⋅ ───
Thorin had sent a letter to Bilbo not too long ago by raven, telling him of his departure from his kingdom and hopefully swift arrival. It had been a year since he had last seen his hobbit.
Thorin had found himself missing his hobbit. Even with the regular letters between them, now It had only been a week since he had gotten the last letter and Thorin had begun to feel a sort of ache in his chest the longer he went without contact from Bilbo.
Now the King Under the Mountain found himself hundreds of miles away from his Lonely Mountain, the one he had left in questionably capable hands, right back were it all began a year ago now, and getting himself lost once again on the roads and in the Shire. passing farms and burrows, even at one point finding himself on the road to brea. He had turned red when he realized, though he wont tell you that, and turned back hoping to find the burrow of his hobbit.
Thorin grumbled as he thought to himself and took another turn down a path he swears he’s seen hundred times before. ‘Now if I can just- have I already been here before?’ Thorin thought, sighing. ‘Mahal, am I even in the right place?’
When Thorin passed a deceptively familiar-looking farm, one he had to have passed twice now, he sighed and swung his pack off his shoulders to fish for a map. Maybe it can help him figure out where he was.
That’s when he heard a very familiar voice. “Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain, as lost as a chicken with no head.” The voice was full of a teasing tone as it spoke.
Thorin whipped around and looked at the familiar small hobbit, his caramel-colored curls wild on his head, suggesting that he hadn’t done much more than wake up and throw clothes on. The hobbit seemed to be wrapped and almost gilded in gold in the light of the early sun, the old dwarf couldn’t fight himself from blushing at the hobbit.
His undershirt was a buttery yellow, a little warn but clearly loved, and his pants an emerald green that could put any gemstone that the king had seen to shame. The bottom of his pants were embroidered with flowers and other things hobbits seemed so enchanted by. The hobbit had no waistcoat, so his suspenders were visible. He stood not a few paces behind where Thorin stood. Thorin only just began to notice how long he had been staring at his hobbit.
Bilbo was smiling broadly, chuckling fondly at the sight of the bewildered and red faced king. Thorin didn’t wait long to rush forward and embrace his friend in a hug, which the hobbit gladly returned it with just as much enthusiasm. Thorin patted Bilbo’s shoulder affectionately and looked down at him when he pulled away from the hug.
Thorin smiled as he spoke. “Bilbo Baggins, and here I thought I’d have to stumble around here for a day until I found you.”
Bilbo laughed and grasped at the dwarf’s arms as he leaned a little closer before teasing. “Now what kind of hobbit would I be if I let one of my guests stumble his way around here like a newborn fawn?” Bilbo said as he moved to hook Thorin by the arm to lead him up a path toward his burrow. “Let’s get you inside and I’ll find you something to eat! I’m sure you are starving.”
And that’s where Thorin found himself, sitting in an uncomfortably comfortable armchair in the living room of Bilbo’s burrow. He watched the small hobbit as he made tea, to quote, ‘hold him over’ till Bilbo was done cooking.
The warmth that wafted from the kitchen seemed to almost lull the king to sleep. The next time his eyes opened, Bilbo was handing him a warm mug of tea that smelled and tasted sweetly of elderberry and mint And a cloth that held a sweet blackberry tart.
Bilbo headed back to the kitchen to continue his task of making breakfast for the two of them. Thorin stood to follow after him, leaning against the door frame as Bilbo mixed something together in a bowl. He found himself observing the hobbit’s every movement, from the way his curls bounced as he worked to the concentration furrowing his brow.
‘He really is quite charming,’ Thorin mused, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. ‘The way he moves about his kitchen, so at ease, so… endearing. Why didn’t I see it before?’
Bilbo grinned at Thorin when he pulled himself a chair over. After a brief silence, Bilbo asked, “How are the renovations of your kingdom going?”
Thorin sighed, closing his eyes as thoughts of Erebor’s restoration filled his mind. They had found that the old techniques of his forefathers had been forgotten or abandoned for more useful skills during the time they had lost their home. But Thorin couldn’t help the pride that swelled within him at the thoughts of his people and how he and his Company had reclaimed his home. And how he feels that his hobbit was to thank for that.
Thorin let his voice sound as tired as he felt, as he spoke, “They are progressing well, but it seems many of the secrets of my people have seemingly been forgotten over the years.” He looked at the mug he held, now half full and tart long gone. He rolled the mug in his hands, it being a tad bit smaller than any other mug he was used to. It had flowers and soft things painted underneath its glaze.
“Still,” Thorin hummed and looked to Bilbo now. ‘Have his eyes always been so sweet?’ “It will be grand and restored to the best of our ability.”
Bilbo hummed and went back to cooking. He scrambled eggs in a hot pan. “Well, I wait patiently to see. You better keep me updated properly this time.” Bilbo said with a bit of a teasing tone and smile. Then he stopped what he was doing, looked at Thorin again as he set a plate down on the counter, and started plating food.
“I dare ask, you are staying a few days, are you not?” Bilbo asked. Thorin felt his breath catch in his throat. He had to think a little harder than he was used to, to speak.
“Yes,” Thorin nodded as he spoke. He found himself once again thinking of Bilbo, the way his eyes sparkled with curiosity and care. ‘Why does my heart quicken every time he looks at me?’ Thorin wondered, a bit confused by his own feelings.
“Then, who is running the kingdom in your absence?” Bilbo inquired.
“Fíli,” Thorin replied with a fond smile. “He is capable and eager to prove himself. And I am not one to disappoint.”
Bilbo nodded, seemingly satisfied with that answer. “Ah, well, I am sure he is quite excited, and I am sure Lady Dís is not pleased at your sudden absence not too long after you have taken back your mountain.” Bilbo teased lightly as his eyes shined with mischief.
Thorin found himself chuckling and nodding softly. “No, she is not, but it will be a good experience for the lad to practice how it truly is to run a kingdom.”
“I see…” Bilbo hummed and pulled a loaf from the oven, setting it at the table to cool.
“How has the Shire been?” Thorin found himself asking as he helped Bilbo’s food find its way to the dining room table.
Bilbo’s face lit up happily as he smiled “Oh! Well, the Shire has been peaceful, as always. You know how things can be here, quiet!” He started digging through the cabinets for more plates. “And! I’m sure you saw on your way here but the fields are green with new crops, the harvest looks promising.” He said.
As Bilbo went to grab his cutlery as he spoke he gasped and looked to Thorin before almost yelling. “Oh! Do you remember what I told you happened a week ago well! It had happened again!!Lobelia Sackville-Baggins has tried to make off with my good silver again!”
Thorin watched Bilbo with growing affection and amusement as he animatedly recounted the events of the Shire. ‘He gets so heated over these things,’ Thorin thought, finding it endearing. ‘How could someone be so fiercely protective and yet so gentle?’
They continued to talk as Bilbo and Thorin prepared and set up breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and bacon filled the air. As they sat down to eat, Thorin felt a deep contentment.
As Bilbo went on about the Shire and what had been happening since his last letter to the king only a week ago, Thorin thought to himself, ‘This visit with Bilbo,’ he mused as Bilbo went on about how some children had trampled over his marigolds, ‘will be as lovely as I imagined.’

It was early in the morning when you awoke. The dwarves were getting ready to leave and there was no sight of Bilbo, he was still fast asleep in his room, blissfully unaware of the carnage that was going on in his home. You had knocked on your brother’s door but hadn’t gauged a response, so, sighing you trudged to the dwarves. “He’s still asleep,” you mumbled, avoiding eye contact with them. “But he’ll join us when he wakes up.”
“He will,” Gandalf reassured, placing a hand on your shoulder and squeezing slightly.
The rest of the morning went by quickly as you got ready to leave for your adventure. Eventually you were riding on a pony next to Gandalf, out of Bag End and towards wherever your next destination was. You were talking to Dwalin, chatting about your life as a Hobbit and your life living with your brother when all of a sudden you heard a voice from behind. “Wait for me!” You turned your head to look over your shoulder and spotted Bilbo, running and shouting in the distance, waving a piece of paper above his head. “I signed it!” It being the quest contract that Thorin and Balin had proposed the night before declaring Bilbo would be the official burglar for the adventure.
You all came to a halt on your ponies, turning to face the Hobbit who had finally caught up to the Company. “Bilbo!” Gandalf exclaimed. “I knew you would come.”
“Well, when I realised you had taken my sister,” Bilbo started. “I had no choice but to come.”
“Hey, she willingly came with us,” Fili piped up from near the front, patting his pony on the forehead.
Bilbo frowned, his eyes wandering over to you in disappointment. “That’s besides the point. I had no choice, but I signed your document. I am now your official burglar.” Bilbo smiled widely as he handed Balin the fully signed document.
“Aye, all appears to be in order,” Balin said as he looked over the document carefully. “Welcome aboard Master Baggins.”
“We have one problem,” Gandalf mumbled, looking around at the Company. “We appear to be one pony short. Meaning Bilbo, or Y/N, will have to ride with someone.”
“Oh no!” Bilbo exclaimed, his eyes wide as his hands fiddled inside his pockets. “I appear to have left without my pocket handkerchief! We’ll have to go back.”
“You’ll have to do without a pocket handkerchief laddie,” a dwarf shouted from the front. “Amongst other things.”
“Bilbo can have my pony,” you piped up, ignoring the pocket handkerchief debacle. “I’ll share with someone.”
Gandalf nodded, a small smile of appreciation forming on his face. “Very well. You can ride with Thorin.” Your eyes widened slightly. You hadn’t engaged with Thorin at all since you had met him yesterday evening, so for Gandalf to suggest you ride with him instead of any of the other dwarves came as quite a shock to you.
Gandalf climbed off his horse to help you off your pony before helping Bilbo up. You walked over to Thorin at the front of the Company who was gazing down at you, his eyes boring into your very soul. You cleared your throat and gave him an awkward smile. “Looks like I’m riding with you.”
“Aye,” was all Thorin said as Gandalf helped you onto his pony.
The journey continued for hours, constantly moving at a steady pace throughout the forests and open world. Your hands remained by your side as you fought to stay on Thorin’s pony, when suddenly you hit a bump in the road. To stop yourself from falling off, your arms instinctively wrapped around Thorin’s waist tightly and a squeak left your lips. “Sorry!” You exclaimed.
“It’s fine,” Thorin grumbled, trying to ignore the fact that his heart had skipped a beat at the feeling of your arms wrapped around him. Thorin looked around at the space you were at and nodded to himself. “We rest here tonight.”
The other dwarves came to a halt on their ponies just before Thorin’s. Some were complaining that they were wet and hungry, while others were just excited to get some shut eye for the night. Thorin climbed off his pony and held his hand out to help you down. Hesitantly you took it and were pulled off the pony before you even had a chance to gather your thoughts at his larger hand in yours. Oin and Gloin were attempting to get a fire going, but the sticks and surrounding area were too wet from the rain for a spark to light. Then, some of the dwarves started arguing: they were all cold, wet and hungry – you couldn’t exactly blame them. “Wait, is that a light over there?” Kili asked, pointing to a warm glow in the distance.
“It is!” Dwalin exclaimed, his eyes wide as he looked at the warm glow.
“We should go over there,” Fili spoke up confidently. Some of the dwarves were for this idea, while some were against it.
“It could be anything,” Bombur said as he furrowed his eyebrows. “It could be anyone.”
“Better than being cold and hungry!” Nori replied, stepping foot in the direction of the glowing light.
“Not so fast,” Thorin said, grabbing Nori by his collar and stopping him dead in his tracks. “We have a burglar with us. Master Baggins, care to find out what that glowing light is for us?”
Bilbo’s eyes widened and he pointed at himself. “M-Me?”
“Yes you,” Thorin said sternly. “Hoot twice like a barn-owl and once like a screech-owl if you find yourself in any trouble and we will do what we can.” And just like that, Thorin pushed Bilbo in the direction of the light. Your eyes widened as you watched your brother disappear into the forest – he had no idea how to hoot like an owl if he got into trouble!
“We can’t let Bilbo go out there,” you said quickly, pointing in the direction he had scurried off in. “Where is Gandalf?” You asked, looking around to find that the wizard had all but disappeared. The dwarves looked around and also took notice that Gandalf had disappeared, some of them shrugged and some of them frowned. You shook your head, shaking the matter off before returning to the real matter at hand. “He’s going to get himself killed out there.”
“You have little faith in your brother,” Thorin pointed out.
You visibly frowned at his comment and shook your head. “It’s not that. We’ve lived a rather sheltered life, we don’t know how to screech like owls if we get into trouble!” Your voice came out in a hiss.
“Maybe Y/N is right,” Balin spoke softly, interrupting Thorin’s train of thought. “Maybe we should go after Bilbo to make sure he’s okay.”
Thorin clenched his jaw before rolling his eyes, sighing. “Fine.” He was beginning to regret bringing these Hobbits along on this quest. And so, the dwarves and yourself trekked off in the direction of Bilbo and the light hoping that your brother hadn’t found himself in any trouble. When you finally reached the light, you quickly came to realise that it was a fire and the wretched smell of flesh and cooked meat filled your nose. You scrunched up your nose and almost gagged. You would have gagged if it wasn’t for Thorin placing a hand on your shoulder and shaking his head, looking at you with a distasteful look. You nodded your head in acknowledgement before turning your attention back to the fire. It was then that you noticed three large figures hunched in the corner, trying to be out of sight while a sack lay on the floor near the fire with Bilbo’s head poking out. You knew these large figures to be mountain trolls and before you could warn the dwarves of their presence, they had all jumped out. One by one, they were all placed inside sacks and discarded to the side by the fire leaving you on your own in the bushes. You panicked as you watched the dwarves, and your brother, be inspected by the trolls as they muttered amongst themselves about the best way to cook them. With a shaky breath you stepped out of the bushes, the rustling of the leaves catching the attention of the trolls.
“Now now now. What do we have ‘ere?” One of the trolls spoke, bending his head down to look at you.
You felt your eyes widen and your body tense up under its gaze. Quickly, you lifted your hands up in a show of defeat and began talking. “You can’t cook them like that!” You said shakily, trying your best to sound as calm as possible.
“Oh? And why not?” Another troll spoke up.
“Yeah, why not? We’re hungry!” The last one retorted, picking its nose.
“I’m a good cook you know,” you said, looking at the dwarves. Their eyes showed confusion at what you were trying to do.
“You can’t reason with them!” Dwalin shouted. “They’re halfwits!”
“I’m just saying you can’t cook them like that,” you said. You were trying your best to think of a way out of this situation unscathed, that your adventure wouldn’t come to an end in the stomach of a mountain troll, when you saw a grey figure in the bushes… Gandalf. You let out a sigh of relief knowing that you were going to be okay when one of the trolls poked your shoulder with its large finger in an attempt to get you to continue talking. “I wouldn’t cook them at all, actually. Dwarves are known to have a rancid taste…”
“You expect us to just let ‘em go?” The first troll spoke.
“Well–” Bilbo started but the first troll turned to face him, flicking him harshly in the stomach and winding your brother.
“I think we’ll take our chances. We’re hungry and are sick of mutton!” The first troll exclaimed.
“Yeah. Hungry we are!”
Just as you were about to speak, to open your mouth and say something about mutton not being the worst thing in Middle-Earth to eat, Gandalf stood on a rock, his staff held high in the air as his voice boomed. “Dawn take you all, and be stone to you!” He slammed his staff down on the rock splitting it in half, the sunlight beaming through the cracks and turning the three mountain trolls to stone. You hadn’t even realised that it was almost daybreak, but you were thankful that luck was on your side… and that Gandalf had arrived when he did.
You quickly ran to Bilbo’s side, helping him out of the sack before turning to help the dwarves. When you reached Thorin, he looked at you with eyes of confusion and yet said nothing. You helped him out of his sack and offered your hand to help him up but he simply ignored your kindhearted gesture and stood up on his own. “We almost died!” Kili exclaimed, resting against a tree and wiping some sweat from his brow.
“Aye, we did.”
“And if it wasn’t for Y/N’s quick thinking, you’d all be dead by now,” Gandalf explained, looking at Thorin and nodding slightly. “But where there are trolls, there must be a cave. Come, we must search for it.”
You nodded your head and followed Gandalf, seemingly searching for the cave entrance. As you walked, the majority of the dwarves patted your shoulder and muttered a ‘thank you’ as they walked by; however, when Thorin walked by, he remained silent, his eyes fixed forward on the task at hand. Bilbo trodded up alongside you and smiled. “How did you know Gandalf was going to turn up?” He asked, his eyes scanning the cliffside for the entrance.
“I didn’t,” you respond honestly, smiling awkwardly at your brother. “I’m just glad he did because… I didn’t have a plan to get you out of that.”
You heard Thorin scoff at your comment, clearly listening in on your conversation and your eyebrows furrowed in response. You hadn’t the idea what his problem was: maybe it was just because you and Bilbo were Hobbits and not dwarves. Maybe one day, you’d find out.

Roots Running Deep- Balin x F!Witch!Reader
This is a request by @that-teen2003! I didn’t post it with the ask just to save some spoilers for y’all 😉 I realized a little late that I flip flopped one detail a bit but I hope you still like it 🙋🏻‍♀️ thank you so much for this request, it ended up being one of my favorite things I’ve made here ever 🥺
Warnings: suggestive jokes, canon typical violence, some angst
Tumblr media
“Why do you keep venturing out into the woods, eh, brother? If I didn’t know any better I’d say it was some sort of tryst,” Dwalin caught his brother on his way out, punctuating his teasing with a wink.
“What exactly are you insinuating, then?” Balin crosses his arms, raising an eyebrow.
“Come on, you can’t be collecting herbs every other day, for stars’ sake! But if you’re meeting out in the woods, she must be quite ugly! What is it, no teeth? Beard a different color than the rest of her hair? Or is it that she isn’t dwarrow at all?”
Involuntary Balin winced, bringing first the widening of eyes and then the quirking of triumphant lip to his younger sibling’s face. “By my beard, you must be joking! How tall is she? Must like the way she picks you up and-”
“For goodness’s sakes, would you stop that?” It was rare for the elder son of Fundin to snap, but when his love was threatened in any way it was as easy an expenditure as taking a breath. “We’ve done nothing of the sort. I’ll not have you taking shots at the honor of one so fair. This is no Blue Mountain barmaid we’re talking about.”
Chuckling deeply, Dwalin shook his mohawked head. "Well, how did you meet, anyway? Someone from Dale, no doubt?"
"If she was from Dale, I would meet her more often in Dale," Balin reasoned, lifting his favorite mahogany-toned coat from their shared home's hook and pulling it on by the sleeve, "if you must know, she has a cottage in the woods. I met her through Oin. She helped him secure a fine stock of herbs, and I accompanied him on his return there."
Uncharacteristically softening, Dwalin's voice came so quiet Balin practically had to cross the room again just to hear him. "Is she your One?"
If he could see himself, Balin was sure he'd have looked a fool the way the twinkle leapt into his eye and the smile arched across his face. But he cared little. "Aye," was all he had to say before disappearing out the door.
~
You awaited him at the brookside just as you promised, dressed in a gorgeous gown of green, the perfect shade to bring out what of your skin could be seem, and with flowers crowning your head. Long sleeves flowing, you waved a hand at the dark-haired dwarf with a grin bright as the sun. How could it be that a gift of the earth like this, all but a daughter of Yavanna, be his? Poetry, truly, as Balin remembered the depictions of the tall, dark woman in green standing aside his people’s fiery-haired creator as his wife. Would you, then, stand beside him someday? Could you?
Flowers sprung at your bare feet as you crossed into the grass, extending your arms to him. You breathed his name like a promise, a hand raising to caress his cheek in greeting. Leaning into the warmth of your touch, Balin lets your name fall from his lips, his hands falling to your waist to pull you against him.
"Doing some gardening, my love?" You smile down at him.
"Not today," he shakes his head, "just wanted to see you."
"Oh? I better find something more entertaining than my trees," you joked.
"What are you doing with your trees?"
"A bit of grafting. Trying to see how many fruits I can get on one tree."
"How many are you up to now?"
You grin. "Care for a climb?"
~
Balin's hair is soft beneath your fingers as they card through the sunkissed dark brown. He rests lightly against your right shoulder carefully as he can while maintaining balance on the branch you pulled yourselves onto. His eyelids flutter shut in contentment, but your heightened senses feel some unrest in him.
“You feel tense. What is wrong?”
At your words, you really feel the muscles of his back twinge against your chest. He inhales, exhales palpably.
“The king,” he replies quietly, “Thror’s love of gold, we fear, has corrupted his mind. His son and grandson have taken up many kingdom affairs already. It weighs heavy upon us all. I admire you. So unlike us in that regard. No need for the material possessions that drive us dwarves crazy. Just living here amongst your plants.”
“They are all I need,” you reply, giving pause as your hand traces down his cheek, “well, almost…”
With that, you gently rotate him, turning to connect your lips with his and feel him smile against you.
~
“You’ve been at that for hours, brother.”
"Because," Balin replies, tone patient and slow as he places another of the series of miniscule gems he cut, "it must be perfect. Wouldn't you want yours to be?"
"'Course. Just can hardly believe all this before you introduce her. She coming to live under the mountain?"
"That I do not know. It might not be good for her.” Balin sighs ruefully, voice going quiet. “Might not be good for anybody.”
~
Smoke. Fire. The sounds of screams as people pour from the mountain and the city at its foot alike. The dwarves have feared for the king, unaware of greater looming threats upon their horizon for who knows how long. And now the world has made good upon its punishment, raining shadow, flame, theft upon Erebor and undoing centuries of culture and livelihood. There is no use fighting, not with a fire drake, a beast with scales as shields and boundless conflagration at a single breath.
They need to run. Leave all that is held and loved behind if they wish to live, have any hope of preserving what once was. Memory, art, family, the beloved strength and endurance known to all dwarves. Reduced now to running or dying.
The prince himself had grabbed Balin, taken him by the arm and pulled him away from the flame just in time, yet they could still feel the searing heat in the air; still they perspire beneath it as they barrel into the king's hall. Thror hardly will part with a single piece of his massive fortune, so he must be dragged to safety beneath the arms of his kin as the great calamity Smaug makes straight for the royal hall.
Heart hammering, Balin drowns out all thought as his legs pump again and again, focus only on cover, safety. As the woods come into view, or as he should say what is left of them, the adrenaline haze begins its fade and the mental clouds part to reveal you. Were you safe? Were your trees, your wards, your... Shakily Balin reaches a hand into his pocket, entire body deflating with the exhale of relief he gives. The bead is there, safe and sound. But would you understand?
Mahal has surely blessed him, for as he wanders the woods, knowing the others will be after them soon, he finds a scrap of parchment, a pen with enough for the briefest message to leave at the foot of your tree, your glorious creation of many fruits.
The others all but yank him out of the woods and call him mad. The parchment, tear-stained and opened with your name, reads in Balin’s ever-steady hand:
We are so different, you and I, but fate is fate. Be it Mahal’s will or perhaps even Yavanna’s, I will be back for you. My heart breaks that I can’t braid it in myself, but if you’ll still wed me please wear this gift I made for you. I can only imagine how beautiful it shall look in your hair or wherever you choose to keep it.
I love you. I will never stop.
Balin
And with that he is forced to run into the chaos again, to witness his kinsman and the men he called neighbors flung like petty dolls by a great thrashing beast, bodies rent in two as though they are mere straw. Straw, however, does not bleed.
Mahal help them all.
~
The cracking of branches alerts you to the potential intruders, diverting your attention from the little patch of fire lilies you’ve been watering.
Fire lilies. Like little sunbursts they are, and yet still after all these years, several decades in fact, something about their intensity brought a recess of your mind back to the day of the drake’s attack. Smaug took everything from the people of Erebor, but from you as well.
Loneliness, after all, is the greatest curse of your long years, your many lives of men and women passing as seasons, all you know withering away like flowers in winter.
The love you had cultivated all those years ago, nourishing with every book Balin read you and every stroke of the bushy hair he somehow kept impossibly soft, every word of botany the dwarf learned for you and every healing herb you demonstrated and gifted to his people, is still in full bloom, though the sight of the lilies thorns your chest with questions that never quiet. Is Balin still alive? Had he even survived the attack, your head will evilly inquire, given his frequent proximity to the throne room, the great hall of kings that you know the dragon has taken to?
Guilt also. As the massacre took place, you had gone to the far edge of your woods, focusing every drop of magic in you upon sealing them, protecting them. Making them a safe place first anyone seeking refuge there. And yet you had seen no one, not a single survivor braving your grounds. So the loneliness drags on. What a waste of your power, you let yourself think sometimes, save for the wards that still remain to this day.
Train of your dress dragging at your feet, you keep walking past the lilies, sigh as you reenter the domain of your great steadfast trees.
You must confess that the tree you carved your sign, even if it was your child of seven fruits, in was of less significance to you before the day of blood and fire. Flame and screams and steel and all the things you understood least. That night is when you found it, after all: laying at its roots had been a hastily torn scrap scrawled with words that rent your heart and poured hours of tears from your eyes. And the bead, oh, the bead, possibly the last work of Balin’s hand. You could not bear anyone but your beloved braiding it onto you, thus it hangs from the thin chain about your neck, swinging above your heart. Yes, your tree of seven fruits had simply been an experiment then, and now and forever it is a memory.
Shaking the ache from your chest, you steady your feet and raise your hands, approaching the area from which the alerting sound had come. A young dwarf in brown bursts from the brush, screaming about a witch and aiming a slingshot at you. Shaking, he does not fire, his light brown eyes meeting the sadness in yours, the weight of memories and his words alike.
Your head snaps up as more heads pop forth, first a doting older one you can tell is the boy’s brother, then a more handsome golden-haired figure and one that has your mouth agape.
“Balin?”
You rush to him, feel his hands grope for yours and kneel down, crumpling into his chest. It is him, for no illusion can be so strong and cruel a ruse as to bear his scent, to hold you and run his thumb over the back of your hand in the same manner. His hair is white now, pure as snow, but the earnest, hopeful wisdom in his dark eyes has not aged a single year. The way he whispers your name like it answers his every prayer, even when his voice quavers, remains and it shatters your chest and builds it right back up.
“It must break your heart to see me like this.”
A single warm tear escapes your right eye as you shake your head, words failing you in favor of a smile half crumpled by your tears. In response you take his hands again, this time holding them for just a moment before you raise them to his bead upon your chain.
Finally your voice returns, shaky as it may be. “I never took it off. Not a single day. Your letter…”
This time it is Balin’s turn to part his lips in surprise. “You cannot mean that.”
“I can and I do. Balin, my life is nothing if it is spent alone. My heart was fractured that day, tucked unknowingly in your coat, but I knew not if I had buried it. Never again am I taking that chance. Let me have the honor of being bound to you. Please.”
Balin’s eyes dart thoughtfully between your joined hands, his stroking over yours once more, your eyes, the gaze that pours so much love into him it’s enough to make a grown dwarf cry, and finally your bead, the tiny emerald chips he’d set by hand so many years ago still glistening with all the love and care he’d placed into them. You hadn’t simply worn it, you’d cared for it.
Again he speaks your name, the finest music you’ve ever heard, and you cannot wait to hear him say it again and again. “You know that what I said is true. Still is. If you will have this old fool of course he’ll have you. May I?”
Nodding, you turn around, letting his aged but still quite nimble fingers undo your chain as you settle yourself onto the grass. The other dwarves swarm you, the younger and more indignant-looking ones quite literally buzzing around you. A taller one with tattoos across his shaven head holds them back with a stern look and the raise of a knuckle-dustered hand.
“Have you never listened to a word he said? A tale he told? My brother has been waiting far too long for this moment. Let him have it.”
At that, you broke completely, bursting into a near-delirious smile and interrupting your beloved’s work upon your hair with your lips upon his, half surprised by his passion and half blind to all but the taste of love upon your lips once more, white roses blooming in a circle around your seated forms.
Signs of love most pure.

ok, but what about some bagginshield?
When the dwarves were captured, Bilbo was not able to remain composed. Would they be harmed? Would they be mistreated? Would their weapons be left or taken so that the prisoners couldn’t even think of escape? And what if someone is hurt and needs urgent help? Bilbo had no idea how elves treated their prisoners, but he was sure that nobody in his company wanted to experience it.
A group of armed dwarves, led by their king, imprisoned in an elven dungeon and awaiting judgment, isn’t it just wonderful? Warring races always try to put a spoke in one another’s wheel, and when a bunch of armed shorties falls into the hands of the forest elves, it is naive to believe they will be released without a proper investigation. They are not in RIvendell, there are no friendly elves. There are only forest keepers fighting anyone who dares to disturb their peace.
Bilbo uses his ring once again, becoming completely invisible to the guards. He is aware of how sharp all the elves’ senses are, but he crosses his fingers and tiptoes past two guardians who are cracking jokes and laughing out loud. He is almost caught by a tall elf in white clothes (is he someone important? or maybe he’s even an elven prince? the hobbit does not know him and he is not particularly interested in making acquaintances with anyone right now), who is reprimanding one of the female warriors accompanying the dwarves before. Bilbo has no idea what they are talking about, but he is ready to swear that they are not discussing anything good.
The keys are stolen (The hobbit starts to understand what the dwarves were talking about; he really is a skilled burglar), and Bilbo makes his way to the prison cells. He hears how dwarves are getting angry, discussing how they would punish all these nasty forest creatures for imprisoning them, and he can finally take off his ring. Asking his companions to remain quiet, so as not to be noticed, he takes the keys out of his pocket and pushes them through the bars. Some of the dwarves are sitting here together, some alone, but all of them are jumping on their feet and trying to exit the cells as quickly as possible.
When Bilbo approaches Thorin’s cell, he doesn’t even have time to greet the dwarf king. He is pulled by the sleeve so that his face fits neatly between the bars, and he is kissed as if he has just returned from an incredibly long journey. Thorin is holding him by his hand, his other hand touching the soft spot where the neck meets the skull, and the hobbit has no choice but to surrender. He exhales into the kiss, closing his eyes, and relaxes for a few seconds, feeling the warm waves of shivers coming down the spine.
He was worried about all the dwarves who were traveling with him, but especially about their king. He was afraid that, because of his status, Thorin would be treated differently, forced to talk about their journey, or even tortured, but no. Here he is, standing in front of Bilbo, with leaves in his hair, and trying to squeeze the living hell out of him. He was afraid, too, Bilbo thinks, but he will never admit it; he is too proud to be caught caring for this little hobbit with sticky hands.
They break the kiss and Thorin looks at his hobbit as if he has grown a tail in these few hours they were separated. There’s no tail, his ears and feet are the same size they were before, but the dwarf king looks at Bilbo with such attention and even… worry? Of course, he will never say this out loud, but this troubled look on his face speaks louder than words, and so does this sparkle in his eyes, similar to the one occurring right before you start crying.
‘’Thorin, let me open the door please, and then we can hug properly.’’
‘’Finally, you stole something worthy! Well done, little burglar!’’ Thorin steps aside and waits for Bilbo to deal with the lock. Before this adventure, Bilbo would have taken offense at such words, but now? Right now he understands that the moment the door is open, he will be enveloped in a hug so tight, he will hear his bones crack. Thorin can’t show his emotions properly, but the hobbit doesn’t ask him to do so: he knows what the dwarven king feels; he couldn’t doubt him even if he tried.
Tonight, when they manage to get some rest, Thorin will hold him in his arms, cover his face in many kisses, and whisper about how he prayed for his hobbit to be safe while they were imprisoned; but for now, there is a battle awaiting them, and Bilbo hopes that his companions are ready to fight.

"Over a Stupid Rock"
A/N: Sorry for the Author notes on the last two imagines! I am using a prompt (which will be in bold below) although I did not come up with it. Creativepromptsforwriting did and I thought it would be good to use it for Thorin or Thranduil. If you guys want a Thranduil version later I will write one! This is a longer than the last one.

Thorin x Reader
Word count: 504
Warnings: Slight Angst, Dragon sickness, Thorin doesn’t say if he likes the reader back or not
You liked Thorin since you were in Beorn's house. At first, you didn't mind him, he kept to himself except for talking to some of the other dwarves. You enjoyed the company of the other dwarves even though you weren’t with them at the loss of their home. Everything was going smoothly until Smaug was defeated. That’s when Thorin changed, the other dwarves didn’t seem to notice much at first. You and Bilbo thought at least until you talked to Balin. “Dragon sickness” Balin starts, “I’ve seen it before. That look. The terrible need. It is a fierce and jealous love, It sent his grandfather mad.” He sighs.
“Are you sure?” You ask, “Positive” Balin states. “Balin, If Thorin, had the Arkenstone, or if it was found, would it help?” Biblo asks. “That stone crowns all. It is the summit of this great wealth, bestowing power upon he who bears it. Would it stay his madness? No, laddie. I fear it would make him worse. Perhaps it is best, it remains lost” Balin says. You start looking at Bilbo before walking away. You sigh as you hear Bilbo calling for you, “Yes Bilbo?” you ask. “Where are you going?” He replied. “I’m going to talk to him, I know it might not do much but it's worth a shot,” you say. “Very well, I wish you luck He is not the easiest to talk to at the moment,” Bilbo replies. You shake your head and leave going to find Thorin.
“Thorin! Can we talk for a minute” You ask after finally finding him. He’s where you should've known him to be, Looking over his gems as others look for the Arkenstone. “What is it?” he says a bit coldly. “Erm, We’ve been searching for a while now, perhaps we should take a break?” You ask. “No, we shall keep looking til it is found. Perhaps someone stole it.” He states. “Stole? Thorin these people are basically your family! None of them would steal it.” you say a bit too quickly. “Perhaps you stole it” He stares at you after he says it. You look at him in complete disbelief that he would even accuse you.
“Me? Why on earth would I want it?” you say a bit loud. “Perhaps you want the riches for yourself!” He yells and turns completely at you. “At your Betrayal, please!” you say. “Why wouldn’t you, Why would you care about me!?” He asks loudly. “I-” you start but cannot bring yourself to finish the sentence. “I’m listening” he states after a few seconds of you not saying anything. “I like you Thorin.” You say not making eye contact. He chuckles a bit making you look at him. “Can’t blame you, I’m pretty awesome” He says, You scoff and look at him. “I cannot believe how low you’ve gotten over a stupid rock.” You say and turn away and leave. You hear him get upset but before he can say anything you turn the corner and continue to walk.

thorin being made to look unreasonable & stubborn while arguing with gandalf in AUJ ("i didn't give you that map & key for you to hold on to the past" - " i didn't know they were yours to keep") is kind of crazy to me bc he's right!!! the map & key are literally thorin's responsibility as his people's leader!!! & ofc he'd be distrustful of the ppl who refused to help his kin when they were literally being EXILED like!!!

Delicate
Pairing: Thorin x fem!reader
Category: Hurt/Comfort
Summary: While training with Fili, you sustain an injury to your arm. Your husband Thorin finds you trying to stop the bleeding and is infuriated with Fili. Angered by his outburst, you remind him that you are far from the delicate queen he thinks you are.
Warning: Description of injury, swordplay, brief insinuative kissing
Tumblr media
“Come now, Fili.” You twirled your sword and shifted into a position of defense. “We both know I need the practice.”
“She speaks the truth.” Kili’s scoff caused you both to shoot him a look. He held his hands up in surrender. “What? You saw how she handled the last orc attack. If Thorin had not been there to save her,”
“Kili.” Fili’s deep voice was enough to quiet him. He turned back to you. “Fine then,” his sword rose. “Should you need me to stop,”
“Just begin.” You ordered, jaw set.
Kili was right, your swordplay was weak when the orcs had attacked your little hunting party. An orc had overtaken you easily, disarming you and getting you to the ground with an awful wound to your side. If Thorin hadn’t been there to block the orc’s final blow you would most surely have died. It had taken weeks to recover. But now you were strong and well and furious at yourself. You needed to get better at fencing, you had to. Hence your current position in the armory’s gigantic room dedicated to practicing for battle, awaiting Fili’s first blow.
It came unexpectedly, knocking you back a couple steps. Kili tensed, his casual position leaning against the wall growing forced. You gripped your sword with both hands.
Fili stepped forward. “You’re too focused.” He swung his sword twice. The clang of metal echoed throughout the room. “Allow your instincts to take control, they will serve you well.”
You shook your head, blocking his swing before taking one of your own.
He sidestepped it easily, striking out for your legs. You gasped as you fell, rolling over in time to block his death blow.
Fili’s eyes were worried. “You’re dead, my lady.”
You growled and pushed up, ignoring the sting in your leg as you fought back out of anger, of fear. Fili walked backwards, blocking every blow. “Better.”
“I must be the best.” You jerked back as he jabbed at your stomach, sweat growing hot on your skin.
    “It’s impossible.” Kili called out.
You looked at him, gasping as Fili sliced his sword along your arm. “Focus on your opponent.” He ordered. “You cannot be the best if you do not,”
“Fili, that’s enough!” Thorin’s voice boomed, startling you both.
Your sword fell limp by your side as you looked to see Thorin striding towards you. “My love,”
“How dare you taunt her? Has she not been through enough?!” Thorin’s shoulder brushed yours as he advanced on Fili.
“No, Thorin, you do not understand,” you reached for him. “I asked for his assistance in this matter, both him and Kili.”
“You asked for this?” Thorin nodded to your arm.
You looked down, heart twisting at the cut Fili left when he sliced his sword along your bare skin. “It’s, it’s just a scratch.”
“I thought such things were implied,” Thorin’s tone was dark and murderous as he turned on Fili once more. “You are to be gentle with my queen during training, Fili.”
    “Yes, uncle. I’m sorry,”
Anger flared within you. “I do not wish to be treated gently, not by Fili nor anyone else.” In two steps you were standing between Thorin and Fili, glaring up into his stormy expression without fear. “Perhaps if my training had been harsher I would have been able to protect myself from the orcs.”
    “That is no reason for-,”
    “That is every reason.”
“My love,” Thorin’s expression grew tainted with worry. “Your skin, it, I cannot stand the thought of it carrying anymore scars,”
“And why not?” Your anger grew as you tugged your shirt up, revealing the ugly scar hiding underneath. “I would rather have a million scars to remind me I am getting better than a scar to remind me of the time I failed.”
Thorin opened his mouth, then closed it. Kili and Fili were silent.
A tear slipped down your cheek. You shoved it away, brushing past him to stalk out of the armory, your sword clattering to the ground.
                                                 # # # # #
    “Do you need help?”
You looked up from where you were cleaning the cut on your arm to see Thorin lingering in the doorway to your shared chambers. You had changed into a white dressing gown, your left leg exposed up to the thigh, revealing yet another cut Fili had given you when he had knocked you to the ground. Thorin’s eyes lingered over the wound but he made no comment.
You bit your lip and returned your attention to the wound. “I am capable of tending it myself.”
“Do you…wish for me to leave?”
“No. They are your chambers as well, my king.”
Thorin stepped into the room and shut the door behind him, his voice remaining soft. “I wanted to…to apologize. For my actions.”
You stilled. Thorin was not known for being quick to apologize.
“When you…when the orc attacked you and you were injured, I thought that I had lost you. I don’t ever want to feel that way again.”
“Then allow me to train.” Your gaze met his once more. “You are not the only one who felt helpless that day. I must learn to be better, Thorin. I cannot, I will not stand by quietly and expect you to save me.”
    “And I support you.”
    “What?”
“I support you,” Thorin crossed to kneel before you, putting the bloody cloth you had been using to take your hand in his. “I will help you to train and I promise I will not go easy. I will train you as if, as if you were one of the men.” His gaze shifted down to your bare thigh. “Or, I will try at least.”
This caused you to smile. “Thank you, my king.”
Thorin smiled back, the gesture causing his eyes to twinkle with relief and something else. You watched as he leaned down, shuddering as he brushed a feather light kiss beside the cut on your thigh. “I love you.” He whispered.
    “I love you.” You breathed.
“Please, allow me to help you, I must…make amends for my actions.”
“Yes, my king. You may proceed.”

DEPTH; BILBO X THORIN DRABBLE/ ONE SHOT.
The yearning for his hobbit hole in Bag-End had yet to cease; the rolling hills of the Shire calls to him on his arduous journey, for which he must ignore. A peaceful little life he had had. Most days, he tries to distract himself with thoughts of his arm chair, his dishes, second breakfast, and most importantly, tea time.
It's easier to yearn for something he had known, rather than the man sleeping a few inches from where Bilbo sat, unblinking in the damp cave they'd found themselves in. He could not help it. It didn't matter how hard he'd tried, he found himself drawn to the King under the Mountain in ways Bilbo could never imagine before.
It is wrong, it is wrong, it is wrong, his mind tortures him in the dark; wrong, for whatever reason, didn't really matter.
The thing that truly matters is what Thorin would think of him, if he knew. If he knew what it was exactly Bilbo thought about in the dark, how watching Thorin sleep never once bores him. In fact, Thorin has never looked more beautiful.
His eyes are relaxed; unguarded in the safety of his dreams. A soft but still somehow smug smile on his lips. Bilbo groans.
He's doing it again isn't he?
Bilbo is too lost in his hopeless daydreams to notice Thorin's eyelids flutter, and then open. His eyes adjust to the darkness of the cave, before they settle on Bilbo's pensive face. He doesn't speak. Not yet. Instead, he, too, takes a moment to soak in the others' appearance. To see a side of him that the others would never get a chance to.
After all, Thorin is not blind. If it weren't for Kili's incessant teasing, and Bilbo's eyes following him everywhere, he probably would be; but he isn't.
"It is late," Thorin says, interrupting the silence with a voice thick with sleep. "I will take over your watch. You, master Baggins, sleep."
Bilbo nearly drops his watch in surprise at Thorin's voice, before he shakes his head.
"No, no, don't you worry a nickle about me," he says instead, a soft smile on his face. "You need it more than I."
Thorin snorts uncharacteristically; what have they turned into? A gallant knight and a chivalrous King? Instead of offering a reply, he moves and sits besides the master burglar; the two sit in companionable silence for quite a while. The gentle breeze floating in through the open mouth of the cave enough to comfort the two men, as their arms gently touch but neither move to pull it away.
It's just them. No need to fret themselves with titles and confusion, of what they could or couldn't do, or whether their interaction is entirely proper. A hobbit and a dwarf; but so much more than that.
"I'm.. sorry, Thorin," Bilbo says after a while. "I can't sit here and look at you and pretend that I don't wish to.. to.."
"I know, Bilbo," Thorin interrupts, his blue gaze piercing into the Hobbit's eyes. He doesn't think about what he's doing, what he could change, or how this will all be perceived in the daylight hours. Thorin knows if he allowed himself to think, he would never have leaned closer, so close he could feel Bilbo's breath. "A thousand sunsets could never compare to the innocence of a first kiss."
It's all so uncharacteristic; so Kingly of Thorin, as if he were saying it to a fair maiden in a garden, but he meant them. The words he uttered so carelessly. He meant it, and he wasn't sure what scared him the most.
Before he can get lost in throes of doubt, he leans forward just enough and presses their lips together.

The Stubbornness of Dwarves by Khazadqueen (ama)

Legolas's attempts at courting Gimli have fallen flat on their face. Somehow, Dwalin finds himself playing matchmaker--neither of them are really sure how it happens.

After a heavy dose of dwarvish medicine, Thorin falls for his intended all over again.
In More Than the Wisdom of Years by jezebel_rising
|| not rated - 4.2k - completed ||
A kink-meme fill with the prompt: So the battle happened and Thorin lived (barely, but he's managed to escape death) his nephews too. The treasure has been divided and Elves and Men went on their way. Dwarves are set on rebuilding Erebor to its former glory and there's just one little thing left unsolved - setting their burglar on the way.
I would pretty much like it form the point of view of Dis, who just arrived to Erebor to take care of her boys (brother included) and sees what a mess Thorin's made of everything.
The fill kind of went sideways from the original prompt. Hope you all enjoy!

“Well,” said Frodo, stirring his tea. “The good news is I met my new neighbour this morning and he’s very handsome.”

Predilections by kathkin
|| general - 7.5k - completed ||
Sam had always thought of himself as a very open-minded hobbit - but it could be that there was a difference between knowing that Mister Frodo did things, things certain other hobbits might say were unnatural, in his bedchamber, and seeing him there in his nightshirt with another lad’s hands all over him.
In which Sam walks in on Frodo in a compromising position and comes to a realisation (eventually).
It Runs in the Family by Imagined
|| teen - 9.6k - completed ||
At first, Bilbo is very glad to hear of the new alliance between Erebor and the Shire. He is even more excited when he learns that some of his family members are coming to the Lonely Mountain to discuss the details.
That is, until the dwarves (and Thorin, who is decidedly not and never shall be his) start getting along a little too well with one of his more adventurous cousins, and Bilbo starts doubting about his place.
All the Rivers Sound in My Body by pibroch (littleblackdog)
|| teen - 5.7k - completed ||
As much as he might like to cut a natty figure in a proper waistcoat and trousers with a reasonable inseam, Bilbo knew there were many more important things to bother with at the moment.
Rebuilding an entire dwarven kingdom, for one. And airing out the stink of dragon would be nice as well.
