can we please talk about a how genius The Princess and The Frog (2009) is?

it’s a (semi) modern twist on a well-known story. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc are mostly faithful to their source materials. princess and the frog throws in the twist of Tiana turning into a frog to flesh out the source material, and few other disney movies have successfully done that.

and tiana, TIANA, is probably the greatest disney princess ever. she’s feminine and soft and caring but she also is strong and resilient and has crazy amounts of perseverance. she doesn’t take now for an answer and doesn’t put up with any of naveens shit. she’s silly and sarcastic and kind and a little cunning and it’s amazing. certain recent movies tend to make their female protagonist “not need a prince” but then completely disregard and bastardize their original chatacter traits through bad writing (I love u rachel zegler im so sorry) without adding any depth to these beloved characters. TIANA teaches a specific lesson to kids through her story AND she still retains her personality after marrying naveen.

lastly, as someone from nearby new orleans, I love the way the culture is integrated to the story. the main villain + mama odie practices voodoo. one of the animal sidekicks speaks cajun and the other plays jazz. most all the songs have a specific jazz feel that immerses you in the world. the fact that there’s a second wedding after the fairytale one to include their families, and that some of the secondary antagonists are hunters on the bayou, and that mardi gras is the huge ticking time clock that drives the third act. it’s so unique in a sea of other princess movies that are set “in a far away kingdom, a long time ago” the research into the culture and the gorgeous visuals of the bayou and the unique architecture of 1920s New Orleans gives this movie a special smth smth that makes it stand out among every other princess movie. I truly don’t think it can be topped.

TL;DR: disneys princess and the frog is THE singular best princess movie ever

every time I see discussion of Disney's wish again, I go watch the Princess and the Frog, because that movie hit the all nuance on the subject of wishes right on the dot.

seeing the subject fumbled honestly made me appreciate TPATF so much more over this year. I really took it's writing for grant-it, but now that I see the ways they could have gotten it wrong I am amazed how right they got it!

I don't even really need a Wish rewrite when I have this movie.

I know! I agree! In my own efforts to work out "what they should've done" with Wish, I kept running into a wall called "The Princess and the Frog already did that."

I said so in that one post about how anti-Disney Wish is, so I won't go into it here. But everybody should watch The Princess and the Frog again.

Halloween

Katsuki loses a bet to Eiji and now Eiji has come to you to figure out his punishment because who knows how to make Kats more miserable than you? Nobody!!

Since Halloween is coming up you know the perfect thing. You’re gonna make him dress up. You already know you wanted to be Princess Tiana so the theme is Princess and the Frog.

Kats isn’t all that upset about it cuz he knows he’d be fine as hell dressed up Prince Naveen but of course he ain’t getting off that easy. You make him dress up as Ray!!😭

This is a group effort of torture. Mina is Lottie, Hanta is Prince Naveen, Eijiro is Dr. Facilier, and of course denki is Ray’s precious Evangeline

Katsuki is PISSED. Pouts and grumbles the entire night. You guys make sure to take a million pictures and he is frowning in every single one of them.

Tiana!Eddie & Prince Naveen!Buck would be fun (Eddie working 3 jobs to support his son is literally canon, & if he’s after stability, Buck could definitely mess that up a bit w his voodoo froggy mess, but also help IMMENSELY in the end bc uh. I would say Merida!Eddie from Brave, but I really don’t think I could see Helena being as good a mom as Merida’s was. The Diazes holding an event to marry off their son still hits, but everything else would have to be changed lol.

Anyways, while we're on the subject of Disney princesses (I'm still trying to figure out who Vox is), why don't we talk about the kween himself, Alastor? Because he is obvi Tiana, Vox is prince Naveen, I was thinking we could make Lucifer Lottie because she's blonde and rich and shit. Husk can be the crocodile, Luis, cause his solos are sick as fuck with the trompet, and maybe Pentios can be Ray ig, Cherri Evangeline, Tiana's mom is also Alastor's mom, cuz they're both wonderful <3, um, idk, i guess the fat, short guy could be Val (again, forgetting the name, but it's Naveen's assistant) or maybe it could be pepper? Cuz yk, pepper mint is Vox's actual assistant. Now the real question is, who tf is Dr. Facilier? Cuz he sounds like Husk and acts like Alastor, and he's the antagonist. Maybe Lilith, but that would get weird, and we don't talk about Roo, so who?

All the problems I have with Princess and the Frog come down to serious story-telling issues, a weird feeling of hostility(???) for the film as a whole from within it's own production, and ofc the sheer annoyance I have with 2D purists gushing over how it's better than Moana, Tangled or Encanto simply because of the 2D animation. Hate that. Hate hate hate. Get over it. Tadashi >>> Ray the firefly.

I've heard a wide range of opinions from Louisianans, black people and vodou practitioners on this film representation-wise. Some reviews are really positive, some not so much but all of which I find interesting and help broaden my understanding of why people could love this movie for more than just aesthetics. I've seen some legitimate shade, possibly/probably not all of it, but shade. -I will say even without the implications, Tiana should have never become a frog though. It's not like she learned anything from it the way Kuzco had to a llama or Kenai did as a bear. Add that to the writing decision/animation fan simping decisions that I hate- BUT I think it's really cool that we have a black American princess movie. I'd like more to be honest. You can never have enough princesses after all. BIPOC people deserve to feel represented and wanted and white kids could benefit having BIPOC characters to look up to. I know I did with Lilo and Mulan as a kid. Liked Belle and Ariel too but come on who beats Lilo and Mulan?

tl;dr: If your defensiveness over PatF comes down to you feeling better represented, that's genuinely great and PLEASE don't let me take that from you because I never mean to! So I'm fickle abt the writing in it that doesn't mean you have to like the cultural drained same-face 2010s Didney films I liek. So long as we all agree Tiana and Naveen are better than Lottie we have all we need.

Anyway, again- it's a crime to cancel Tiana's show.

The ride I think genuinely disappointed everyone but to that I have to ask: WHO'S FAULT IS THAT, DISNEY? You could have literally kept splash mountain as is but gut the three racist Brers and slowly inch more PatF in. Is that "censoring the past" by continuing to ignore that Song of the South existed? I don't know. Maybe(??). I don't want to be thinking positive for Disney's (the company, not the artists) sake, but I do think PatF would have not only fit it would have been a good chance to move forward rather than keeping racist characters around. It's all we wanted. It's all ANY OF US wanted. Instead they opted for bad animation scenes and that weird "it's the movie but it's not"-schtick they're making all their IP rides into. No Lewis-shaped boats. I'm upset. But hey it's only year one. Let's keep going forward...let's see how that show turns out I mean the Tangled series was really cool and Tiana's was gonna be in the style of the movie itself this is gonna be-

If ANY part of this decision is made on account creepy antiwoke types and their stupid "if we can raceswap Ariel WHY NOT DO THE SAME THING WITH TIANA DOYOHDhhhooo"; which I'm not convinced it isn't, I'm pissed. Tell me you're racist without telling me you're racist. Give your black character the show she deserved.

On a moral side I find it QUITE dubious that that's the first show to get the axe--

On a "dear god PatF fans are annoying and won't shut up about how their movie's better because 2D!!!", I'm also dreading this. Now more than ever people are going to insist that their precious handdrawn masterpiece was unwanted and unloved all because the show would have been in ''2D and that's all that matters''. That's not what matters.

Hyping up and promising millions of people that their hardworking black Americana frogprincess, who was going to be human more on screen this time, who was going to have her own show as a restaurateur//bayou magic defender; only to DROP HER while Frozen III: Season of the Witch or whatever gets to exist because the characters are more 'marketable'...that's what matters. And that's what's unforgivable.

Probably fits the bill of a Disney adult the most.

Wears those cheesy “family trip!” shirts, Mickey ears, the whole nine yards.

Tries to get the rest of the family to wear matching shirts- it does not go well.

Freaks out on Tower of Terror but ends up loving it.

Dad jokes at any given opportunity

He gets mistaken for Beast at some point during the trip. He’s not mad about it.

Full on sobs at Happily Ever After

Favorite ride is Mission Space or Cosmic Rewind and he loves the Mickey Pretzels.

Diego:

Trash talks the others before heading into Space Ranger Spin and Toy Story Mania- he loses to Allison and Claire both times. He’s very bitter about it.

However, he is very good at gunner on Smuggler’s Run. Actually, he just loves Galaxy’s Edge as a whole, mainly for the costumes.

Loves the fast paced coasters- Tron, Cosmic, Everest, Rockin Roller (has a special love for Slinky Dog but he’ll never admit it.)

Uses his powers to win a toy for Lila at the Dinorama carnival.

He and Ben team up to secretly book Five an appointment at the Bippity Boppity Boutique.

Favorite ride is Tron and favorite snack is the spiced corn from Harambe.

Allison:

TIANA AND NAVEEN DISNEYBOUND WITH RAY!!!

Claire dresses up as either Lottie or Moana

They just geek out at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure as a whole tbh. They never want to leave

Free lightning lanes all day with this girl!

The photo op QUEEN. Makes everyone stop for a photo in front of the castle and it actually turns out really cute

Loves the Festival of Fantasy parade (and secretly dreams of young Allison who wanted to be a princess too)

Aside from Tiana’s, loves going on the teacups with Claire and Klaus and just Hollywood studios in general

Fave ride is Tiana’s and fave snack is cotton candy :)

Klaus:

A little overwhelmed at first, but manages to settle in and have fun

Shares his journey of sobriety with a CM who makes him a celebratory badge for it, he wears it and is congratulated by dozens of people which makes him quite emotional

Gets really into pin trading with Claire (blind boxes are his specialty. He has a knack for guessing what pin he’s going to get)

Not a fan of most of the rides but he does like the Peoplemover and Kilimanjaro safaris, and the Pandora rides

Does love meeting characters though, especially the ones that will talk with him :)

Content to spend most of his time pin trading and relaxing in the quieter parts of the park (he loves Animal Kingdom)

Constantly talks about how much of an entertainment masterpiece Fantasmic is (because it is!!!!)

Fave ride is Flight of Passage and fave snack is the churros from Nomad Lounge. iykyk

Five:

The poor victim of a prince makeover via Diego and Ben

Surprisingly, besides the ton of pixie dust, he doesn’t hate it. He chooses Prince Philip

Is understandably upset when they won’t let him drink around the world (Allison and Ben help with this, and he does complete his goal)

Loves the classic rides/shows like Pirates, Tiki Room, Carousel of Progress and the Jungle Cruise (the skipper told a really old joke that only he understood)

Loves learning history and facts about the parks from CMs. Is the master of the Cast Compliment

Judges Luther for crying at Happily Ever After (but loves the show on the inside)

Fave ride is Carousel of Progress and fave snack is anything from Les Halles in France.

Ben:

Wears his jacket to the parks and complains about the heat literally all the time

Total coaster junkie like Diego- they end up on a lot of the rides together.

Is the first one awake in the morning and the one to yell at them all to get moving

Handles the dining reservations because he “doesn’t trust them to pick somewhere good”

he accidentally books a restaurant in the wrong park

loves to make universal jokes

also has definitely asked a CM where Cinderella’s castle is (while standing in magic kingdom)

Fave ride is Everest and fave snack is the pizza spring rolls outside Adventureland.

Viktor:

The mediator, of course

Brings cute handmade presents for the CMs

Prefers the chill boat rides over the intense ones (Tiana’s, Pirates, Navi, Jungle, Frozen, Gran Fiesta)

wears a family trip shirt to match Luther <3

Has a special love for the Philharmagic and Muppetvision shows

Loves the entertainment. Will sit and watch the castle stage show all day if he could.

Loves taking photos of the parks and silly selfies with his family

fave ride is Gran Fiesta and fave snack is a classic dole whip

Lila:

Also fits the bill of a classic Disney adult, but in a different way- cute workout fit, Minnie ears, sunnies, a loungefly or Vera Bradley, Joffrey’s in hand

This girl loves her Joffrey’s

Will not stop staring at the castle. Seriously. Diego has to drag her away to get her focused.

He does surprise her with dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table though. She’s ecstatic. (Forget the others- they can eat at Tony’s.)

Also loves the coasters- she purchases the photo of her and Diego on Tron and frames it.

Loves meeting the princesses and taking photos with them!

Definitely a big Haunted Mansion enjoyer (Klaus is not, for the record.)

an overview about my rendition of princess tiana , i will expand further on these concepts in the future but this is just to serve as a general overview on how i write tiana :)

♕ — by default , tiana is twenty-nine. she has been a restaurantier and ceo for a decade at this point and knows her way around a kitchen or two very well. she has three locations of tiana's palace ( new orleans , washington, d.c. , and los angeles ): and is world renowned for her southern-creole cuisine. while politically she is a princess of maldonia naveen and his parents never enforced many of the moreso royal rules onto her and the pair take a back seat but do show up for political balls and also run a charity!

♕ — tiana has learned near fluent maldonian ( in modern terms: she can speak french and portuguese and by extension can understand spanish to a degree ): her accent is a tell-tell giveaway as naveen's parents have fondly commented that she speaks their native tongue with a creole flair.

♕ — while patf did not touch much on the racial undertones of the 1920s... i will be doing so , a lot. while i like to imagine for black folks of the time period that tiana's family was 'well to do' in comparison... they where still black and even with more disposable income than most , still could not afford much of the luxuries that whites where.

♕ — tiana's friendship with charlotte is so important to me. the love and care they have for one another is so lovely. paired with the above i like to imagine without question that charlotte and eli ( her father ): would've happily gave tiana the money for the down payment but tiana being tiana wanted to work for it. it was why she'd accept money for making beignets for the masquerade party instead of accepting it with nothing to offer in return.

♕ — tiana kept the ability to talk with animals and yes, she does keep in contact with ray's family and louis ( he still plays 1st chair trumpet in her original restaurant location, everyone thinks it is a costume ).

♕ — inspired by this piece of fanart, after transforming back into a human tiana kept some wart-like marks across her back and legs -- while not as big as in the art they are there and when asked, she simply refers to them as birthmarks.

♕ — after being in the restaurant industry for so long tiana has all but killed the pain receptors in her hands, meaning that she can take hot ass pans put the oven with no gloves or touch a grate accidentally without flinching immediately. while she does rub special creams on her hands and regularly keeps her nails manicured, she has no personal grievances with the calloused skin -- to her, it is further proof that all her hard work paid off.

♕ — while tiana is a heterosexual women, during her adolescence her and lottie got curious at a few sleepovers and fooled around a bit but it never amounted to much of anything, the two do not speak on it but have acknowledged it. they are very sister like but still may share a friendly kiss or two on the lips. while the twenties did not have the term i like to think tiana would be demiromantic.

♕ — hoodoo and voodoo while different, in patf are treated as one and the same. tiana is a christian women that has learned some hoodoo from mama odie, when she is able to make the visit to see her. this was done moreso out of politeness than tiana's own desire. while, she doesn't speak of them openly ( besides with lottie and naveen ): she does not think the ways of magic and other holistic practices take away from her religious beliefs but such topics are taboo outside of her closely guarded circle.

♕ — after becoming princess of maldonia, tiana did more than just open her dream restaurant, with her husband's assistance she bought up her childhood neighborhood and had every single house rebuilt from the ground up. she also became a major advocate against the beginning practices of red lining and gave jobs to those that desired, while also paying them fairly. if you worked for tiana, you ate almost better than the clientele.

Introducing my descendants OC- Noah Rogers, prince of Bayou de Orleans

(I normally don't do this a lot but- I've made this guy and I love him)

As you probably guessed by his name and tittle Noah is the son of Naveen and Tiana

At Auradon prep he's the president of the cooking club and just like his mom he's hardworking and very determined

That being said he does take after his dad a bit too, he loves flirting with people, boys and girls. It's a little game he plays

Everyone knows he's a flirt and they just roll with it

Outside of school he works part time at his mom's restaurant as Tiana wanted to make sure her son knew the value of hard work and formed a closer relationship with his people. He is not above everyone else just because he's their prince

Noah loves working at his mom's restaurant and he loves cooking, he also knows how to play the trumpet after Louis taught him and his middle name is Ray after his parents' old friend

Lottie is still very involved in Tiana's life, she's Noah's auntie and always gives him a lot of gifts

When Ben made the announcement that he was going to invite villain kids over to Auradon prep Noah did his best to keep an open mind

His mom told him how hard it was for her to get to the top solely because of her origins, he wasn't about to discriminate against these people for theirs

He doesn't interact with the core four that much outside of fencing and tourney, and this dynamic keeps up until the end of D3

Gil's always liked cooking more than he'd like to admit so when he starts attending AP Noah is very happy to let him join the cooking club and teach him how to make all kinds of different dishes

Even offering Gil a part time job at the restaurant

Because apparently this account is now for random movie rambles as I rewatch films for the 100th time-

A watch through of Princess and the Frog:

Anyone else think it is hella suspicious that someone wanted that sugar mill only after she wanted to buy it?

- After the movie was done, it was explained to me by friends that this is a common scam to squeeze more money, especially targeted against POC potential buyers. No one else was bidding, they just wanted more money. My child brain just didn’t fit that together the first couple watch throughs- I mean, they clearly still had it for sale a long time later in order to be threatened at the end of the film… assholes.

Gathering a group of travelers by appealing to thier dreams is a very American story, Ala Wizard of Oz- the idea of the individual goals. This is Naveen, Tiana, and Louis. But then comes Ray, who is just trying to be helpful. That feels more old world, and he leads them to the old world magic- the woman of power in the wilderness. :)

Lawrence was frightened by the idea of a controlling wife, while Naveen was impressed with a well thrown book, and Tiana had dreams that included showing all the boys how it’s done. And her friend is very commandeering, and the object of all the men. There’s a theme of strong women and respect for them here- which makes sense. 1920s fairytales are just out of the Victorian era and the invention of the fairy godmother. And here comes Mama Odie. She even has the mother title.

Naveen and Tiana are so perfect for eachother. Beyond him being ok with her ambition and hustle, she needs his people skills for her resteraunt- you need a front man 😁

First time I can think of in a Disney film that an outside perspective for love song had thier own love to sing about 💘

Every good char in this movie is immediately willing to help someone out, even when- especially when- it inconveniences them. That is how you let your characters be very strong characters, even occasionally overwhelming other characters, and still be good people and likeable. This is how we bond with Lotti, and then Naveen, despite them having domineering personalities.

The way Naveen admires things about Tiana even before he likes her- then when he loves her, the way his face lights up as he watches her.

The wishing star has a name now 🥰✨ Evangeline

Anyone else think froggy Naveen is based a little on John Bob from Swan Princess? Those leg spots look familiar is all I am saying.

Most important line- “He didn’t get what he wanted, but he had what he needed” was given to her by her mother, who also introduced her to the upper class of town. He mother was so important to this story.

The marrying of Lotty is very “old chivalry” anything for my lady, while the tale itself is very peasant tale of pulling together to get through. As many American tales do, you gotta get ALL the tropes in there. 🪄

Ray is such a well designed character. He is wise, and has common sense, and allies and skills, and LIGHT to oppose the shadows- and they balance it by making him small and fragile. Is… is he the wizard of the party? Not nessisarily in the DND way that is very academically type, but in the LOTR classic fantasy way, that makes one member of the group to be the big support to everyone else, but can also be fridged when needed. 😅🥲 Brings wisdom and all else you need but destined to go out ina blaze of glory???

Happy that his parents seemed to be- “finally someone took him in hand” and could care less about her social position.

Guys… I’ve been on a Princess and the Frog kick lately (not just because of all of the news surrounding the new ride that’s opening in two weeks), thus, this has inspired me to create my newest Disney kid.

Meet Princess Evangeline “Eva” Rae of Maldonia, the daughter of Tiana and Naveen and heir to the Maldonian royal throne.

For now though, Tiana and Naveen thought it would be best for Eva to grow up in New Orleans away from the pressures of royal duties and if she wants to take up the throne someday, they’ll support her, and if she wants to take over the restaurant one day, they’ll support that decision as well.

As for Eva, she’s a straight A student in school, loves to spend time with her mother doing all kinds of cooking projects whether in the house or at the restaurant, plays both the trumpet like Louis and the ukulele like Naveen, spends time with her best friends, Teddy and Maeve (Lottie’s twin son and daughter), and loves to visit the Bayou every now and again.

(also, I don’t know if you noticed, but the necklace she’s wearing is a nod to Ray the Firefly and Evangeline. Tiana had it custom made for Eva shortly after she was born).
