I'm Italian and a new follower, ever since I saw the region where Machete is from I can't stop calling him Carmelo in my head since it's a pretty common name there and Vasco speaks with a Tuscan accent in my head now( I love how they pronounce the letter C even if people sometimes makes fun of them for that)
It's always really fun hearing about any Italians that like my work and characters, because you guys obviously have the insider knowledge I (a Finnish person) am not privy to. If you say Machete looks like a Carmelo I have hard time doing anything but nodding and going "ah yes, sounds legit, you probably know your Carmelos better than I do".

How similar are the Swedish and Danish languages?
I don't speak either so I'm probably not a fantastic person to ask! But as far as I know when the Scandi royals get together they speak their own languages or a hybrid because they are close enough that they can understand each other. My understanding is that Danish is the hardest or "most different" of the three when spoken - and there are some clips out there of Victoria gently mocking Frederik's Danish pronunciations - but they might disagree and I very much do not want to wade into the Scandinavian rivalry hahaha.

I think it's funny that I can speak English with a norwegian accent, Norwegian with an English accent. But I cannot speak English with an Italian accent, instead I can speak Italian with an American accent.

Johanne retains an accent even when she was practically been raised in Galahd.
She can "switch" it off but since it's one of the few things she remembers about her father she keeps it even though it makes her stick out a bit within her Galahdian peers.
There's only a handful of people that recognize it's origin and one of them is significantly old.

Barca femení x reader request
-> Ingrid's little sister spends the Summer holidays with her and gets into trouble, leaving the whole team worried
-> Warning: talk of rape, drugs, and stalking - do not take this lightly
-> For this request, I hope you like it!
➳ Masterlist
•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•
Eight weeks of pure free time, a blessing – especially when your sister lives in Spain and you can stay there for free. Ingrid lives in a nice apartment in the middle of Barcelona, together with her girlfriend Maria and two cats. It was a nice surprise when she asked you if you would like to spend the summer with them – of course, you said yes. Who wouldn’t?
Mapi was nice, very nice and while there was a language barrier and situations were hard sometimes, everyone did their best to get around it. You learned Spanish in school, but it was very different from actual Spanish, especially in Barcelona where many people speak Català.
The two footballers had early training sessions but usually, you all had breakfast together, or at least for the last ten days that you had been there. Today, however, you were nowhere to be found, and Ingrid was panicking.
You had gone out last night, which she knew, but you had not returned and now it was eight in the morning. She called and called you, made Maria call you, and even tracked your location, which was still at the club.
No ten minutes later she was pulling you out of the dark environment by your hair. It’s not like she didn’t try pulling you by your arms but your body was much too sweaty and she kept slipping.
The brunette didn’t even talk to you on the way home, just depositing you in the backseat. It was Maria who took care of you at home, guiding you to the shower and pulling out an outfit for you, thankfully with sunglasses.
Half an hour later Mapi pulled into the training grounds, helping you out of the car while Ingrid stormed ahead. As thankful that she was, that you were okay, she was pissed. You had promised her that you would be back at least by three in the morning, you had promised her that you would take care of yourself and be watchful – which you obviously had not been.
At some point during the night, you noticed that everything was a little hazier, and disoriented and you completely forgot where you were.
Your drink had been spiked.
Terrified of seeing Ingrid like this – or rather her seeing you like this, you had decided to stay there, in the hope that she would be gone once you headed home. But when your sister had seen your dilated pupils and wonky behavior, she knew that you were not ‘just’ drunk. She was so pissed that you took drugs, putting that toxic stuff into your body, that she did not even question if you wanted it.
Her angry stomping was interrupted once she ran into Keira, Lucy, and Ona who stood in the hallway chatting. “Jeez, what happened to you?” The heavy Spanish accent teased the Norwegian just enough to give an answer. “My sister happened to me.” Just at that moment, Mapi dragged you around the corner – a cap pulled deep into your face, together with sunglasses effectively hiding it.
The three footballers quickly understood the situation, huge grins on their faces, thinking you were drunk of your ass.
In the changing room, Maria dropped you in your sister’s cubby, who immediately sat down next to the blonde in hers. Upon seeing the taller woman’s facial impression most people just ignored your presence, going about their day as usual but it was Frido who approached you first. “Lille Ingrid!“
You were pulled into a tight hug, the blonde footballer having missed you – effectively ignoring the pained expression on your face. “Hi, Frido.” Kisses were pressed on your cheeks as she pulled off the sunglasses.
Both of you winced. You because of the bright light, Frido because of your wide eyes. “Hva har du gjort? Ingrid is pretty mad.“ You pushed her hands away, pulling the glasses back on, trying to hide once you saw Pina and Patri curiously looking at you. “I didn’t do anything Frido, I promise. But Inni is mad at me.” Your voice was low, just above a whisper that the Swede could understand you. With soft coos and head pats she went back to her own cubby.
The girls started to walk out the door, ready to hit the pitch. This time it was your sister who pulled you up, pushing an isotonic drink into your hands. Maria had been fine with letting you sleep in the changing room but Ingrid decided to punish you – sitting you down next to the field, in the early heat. It was unbearable to sit there – the sun burning down on you, the shrill sounds of the whistle annoying your forming headache.
It was Lucy who was sent off to take a break because of her knee, and Alexia who still struggled with her ACL, who took a seat on both sides of you.
¡Hola, nena! The captain pressed a series of soft kisses on the top of your head, pulling you into her body. While she was even warmer, she shielded your body from the sun – and she was very comforting to your upset head. “How’s your hangover?” Lucy’s teasing voice was quieter than usual, going easy on you. “Hasn’t even formed yet.” The two older women shared a look over the top of your head, knowing that did not mean anything good.
It was silent for a good couple of minutes, with everyone watching Claudia score a screamer – the two women at your side cheering.
Ana joined you after a bit, sinking in front of you effectively barricading your view of the pitch as she pulled the glasses off again. “Ai! Did you take drugs?” Her voice was shockingly loud, alarming everyone in your vicinity but especially Lucy and Alexia, as their heads snapped to you.
The Spaniard grabbed your face, squishing your cheeks as she observed your eyes – the Brit copying her shortly after. “Do you know how dangerous drugs are? You are ruining your body!” Alexia was rambling in Spanish and Ana just looked disappointed. Her blue eyes were drilling into your soul, there was something wrong and she knew it. She just didn’t know what it was.
The whole situation was uncomfortable – three women who you respected a lot talking about you, talking at you, about how bad what you did was. “I didn’t take them.”
Silence.
It was finally silent, giving your buzzing head a short break.
The other girls were still on the pitch, blissfully unaware, but you could see Ingrid and Mapi eyeing your little circle. “What do you mean you didn’t take them?” Lucy was the first to find her words, but it was Ana’s pleading eyes that made you spit it out. “Someone put something in my drink. I didn’t take anything. I promise.” Alexia’s eyes teared up, hoping that she misunderstood. But upon repeating yourself the blonde understood that she heard you correctly.
You pleaded with them that they would not tell your sister or her girlfriend, and they agreed – under the condition that you would join them at team night that evening – which you agreed to.
The rest of the day was hard. Ingrid ignored you for most of it. While her teammates had begged you to let them tell her, you refused. You didn’t want your sister to worry even more than she already did. Her heavily tattooed girlfriend however made you food, something to drink and brought you to bed – in the hope that you would feel better when you woke up, or at least be sober.
Your head still hurts after waking up, a hangover having taken the place of your previous drunken state. After some food, an Advil, and a nice long shower you felt much better – dressed to impress and ready to go.
The team bonding for the night was cooking together at Alexia’s place, seeing as her kitchen was the biggest. Upon arriving Ingrid sat you down on the couch where you were quickly joined by Claudia, Patri, Jana, and Bruna, the younger ones on the team. They didn’t even question why you were at their training in the morning, just happy that you were with them again as they had last seen you for a spring vacation in Greece. It didn’t take long until you were filled in on all the newest gossip;
Jana’s girlfriend Jill is a very good partner
The girl Patri got with a couple of weeks ago became clingy, she panicked and told her she was married, which she wasn’t and a quick Google search proved that
Bruna’s brother had gotten a girl pregnant, so now they were getting married with the young brunette as a bridesmaid
Alexia and her girlfriend had broken up and it was messy
And apparently, not even Lucy, Keira, and Ona knew what was happening with them.
It was Sandra who called them over to help prepare the food but you and Claudia were sent away again, not trusted with the sharp knives, so you took your previous places on the couch. “How long are you staying with Ingrid?” The two of you fell into a comfortable chatter, the short brunette taking up her favorite place with her head in your lap as you braided her hair.
The kitchen was noisy as they made food, just a few people were scattered throughout the room. A phone started ringing - yours. The number in the display was unknown to you, so you pressed the red button.
Just a few seconds later it started to ring again – declined again.
After that Pina and you talked for a bit, your eyes falling to the phone from time to time until it rang again. Annoyed you answered with a pissed “Hello?” The silence on the other line was disturbing until you heard a creepy chuckle. “Hello?” Claudia watched the interaction as your brows furrowed, and so did the brunettes. “Don’t you remember me?”
Your heart started to beat incredibly fast and loud. Sure, you hadn’t actually fallen asleep from the drug that spiked your drink but there was still severe memory loss from the night. “I thought you liked my drink. I made it just for you.” His voice was just a whisper that reached your brain in a very uncomfortable place. “Who is this?” The chuckle was back and instead of an answer, your phone dinged – a message from the same unknown number that was talking to you.
The Spaniard on your lap watched as you took the phone away from your ear, opening the message. It was a picture of you. And it was taken at the bar from last night.
In it, you were sitting on a guy's lap but your pupils were blown large, a stare that didn’t reach anybody facing the camera, as his ankles crossed yours keeping you in place, as did the hands whose knuckles turned white as they were holding onto your wrists. “Don’t you like this picture? You were so happy when we took it.”
By now the other youngsters were back, leaning over the couch, watching you. Once Bruna understood what was happening, she ran off, just to return with the rest of the team – forget cooking.
Ingrid practically sprinted at you as she took the phone, throwing it to her girlfriend who took a screenshot of the number and yelled down the line. Your sister took your shaking form in her arms as Alexia went to help Mapi with whatever she was doing.
Once you had calmed down a silence filled the room, a silence that was waiting for you to explain. “I didn’t take any drugs last night, my drink was spiked. And apparently, some things happened that I don’t remember. I- I don’t know how he got my number, and I don’t remember doing anything with him. And, and-“
You were crying, burying your face in Ingrid's thick hair, trying to hide from the world. Frido and Caro tried to calm down your sister who was also crying while Lucy pulled you into her own arms.
The whole team was there for you – and now they knew that you hadn’t voluntarily taken drugs. They also knew what a blackout could mean, especially when the guy had your number and pictures like that.
It was Ale, the trusted captain who voiced the next step. “Let’s get you to a hospital, Nena. Get a rape kit done.” Tears were streaming down your face as Claudia and Patri tried to hand you tissue after tissue. “I’m scared.” Ingrid, who felt so incredibly guilty for treating you the way that she did, not even questioning you if you really had taken drugs, took you in her arms. “I know, baby – but you have us, you’ll never be alone again.”
And she was right, you were not alone.
Ingrid, Fridolina, and Ana accompanied you to the hospital, where you got tested. It was positive, but you were not pregnant or had syphilis but you had definitely been taken advantage of. The good news? There was a DNA sample that you could take to the police, along with the picture of you and the guy, the number you were called from, and a drug test positive for Rohypnol.
Maria, Lucy, and Alexia went into the station with you and held you as you cried when retelling what happened, but the rest of the team was waiting outside – hoping that they could find the guy who did this.
Turns out that they could.
Two weeks later you had gotten the notification that they had caught him with Rohypnol on his body and pictures of you on his phone – it was over.
The whole team of Barcelona Femení took you under their wings you spent training with them, went out on team nights with them, and went on little hangouts with some of them.
You had found a second family – away from home.

English accents of the Nordics
Denmark: Mathias speaks English with a newscaster British accent. He puts in the effort to practice his English accent to scrub out any traces of Danglish, which he thinks reflects poorly on himself. Sometimes, Danglish sounds slip out anyway, and he gets very embarrassed about it, hoping that his listeners didn't notice.
Sweden: Björn's English is Swenglish 💯. Speech that sounds like "Aj dånt tink så". He doesn't find it grating or embarrassing that he speaks this way and can actually get very talkative in English when he's giving a lecture about a topic of his interest that he mostly encounters in English, such as technology. His listeners just have to get used to the intense Swenglish.
Norway: Sigurd speaks English with a generally Midwestern American accent, but he doesn't consciously train his accent and pronounces words with a Norwegian sound and flow rather often. He's comfortable with it and thinks it makes his speech sound more unique. He's proud to announce that he's from Norway when people point out the quirks in his speech.
Finland: Timo's English has a noticeably strong Finnglish accent, like a slightly milder version of the "In Finland we homo in marriage for free" guy. He dislikes how he speaks, but finds it awkward to practice correcting his speech, so he avoids speaking English and can seem like a quiet person.
Iceland: Eiríkur speaks with a perfect East Coast American accent, because of his frequent interactions with American tourists and exposure to English media in the recent decades. People are always surprised to find out that he's from Iceland from the way he speaks.

❣️ what pet names would ollie, paul, pepe, clem, liam, arthur and dennis call you? (not sure if this is the right way to request, ignore it if i’m wrong)
❣️ – send me a prompt and one/a few drivers and i'll tell you how i think they would react!!
Tumblr media
ollie bearman
oh i totally see him calling you love in his silly british accent. especially when apologizing for something ("i'm sorry for being away for so long, love") or when asking for a favor ("love, could you pass the salt?"). just in general when he's being soft and romantic, to be honest. it just rolls off his tongue so easily, before he can even stop himself, and you always giggle at the fact that it sounds more like luv than how it's actually spelled. he's too british for his own good. i also believe he calls you honey, but more often just hun because it's quicker yet still has the same level of adoration behind it.
Tumblr media
paul aron
i've seen people on here say he would call his gf kallis and i think that's adorable. like yk how he still lives in estonia and probably speaks estonian most of his time, so it would be so natural for that pet name to slip out of him. in english, though, i think he would like to go for something along the lines of my sweet or my dear. especially when hugging you or cuddling you, holding you close and whispering "you did so well, my sweet". he loves to add "my" as a reminder that you're his and no one else's.
Tumblr media
pepe marti
call it cliche but he would totally go for mi amor. i imagine him coming home after a race weekend, when you're welcoming him home in the hallway with a big hug, and pepe kisses the top of your head with a whisper of "i missed you so much, mi amor". corazón could also be one, but i think he would love cariño, and he thinks it's so cute that he just finds himself smiling every time he says it to you.
Tumblr media
clement novalak
mon trésor. he said it once, just to be funny and cheesy, but don't think he didn't notice the way your breath hitched in your throat when the words left his mouth. he doesn't speak his mother tongue often, so hearing him use it just for you? it sweeps you right off your feet. he also loves to go for a good old babe, it makes him feel really cool. especially in front of his friends lol.
Tumblr media
liam lawson
darling. no doubt. it originates in the way that his mother used to call him by that pet name and something about it is just so dear to him. i also see him calling you idiot in an endearing way, like if you do something stupid he will just hug you tightly as he laughs, face nuzzled into your hair as he tells you about how you're "you silly little idiot... my silly little idiot".
Tumblr media
arthur leclerc
arthur goes classic. mon amour or mon bébé all the way. idk what else to tell you, he's just a sucker for those. though i also really see him as someone who wants to call you something in your own native language just to be cute, something along the lines of darling/baby/love etc.
Tumblr media
dennis hauger
excuse my norwegian for being a bit rusty but something along the lines of kjæreste, which (if i'm not mistaken) is the word for girlfriend/boyfriend but means more like "beloved"? i think he would love to speak to you in norwegian, even if you understand nothing of it. i also have a feeling that he would be good at using all kinds of pet names to be honest.

The pronoun "I" in traditional Scandinavian dialects
by jkvatterholm
I've aimed for this map to show the traditional area around 1900. It is similar in many ways still today, but some areas have shrunk a lot. Many Danes do no longer speak the genuine dialects for example, instead speaking standard Danish (incl. "jeg") with a local accent. This was starting already then of course, but on a much smaller scale. For example, Læsø, Djursland and Århus had already begun to move away from a at the time.
The spelling in the info should be close enough that IPA is not needed.
I've used tons of sources from this, including maps from regions or countries, trying to stitch them together and fill in any holes and correct discrepancies.
I can not separate forms with and without the final consonant (ja/jag) because that's impossible. Almost half the dialects may use both, depending on if the word is emphasised, on the end of a sentence or followed by a vowel etc.
Some spoken samples:
"ieg" in South-West Inland of Norway. (Press the speaker icon)
"i" area of Norway by Sweden.
Icelandic "ég" being pronounced "jeg".
Southern "i" area of Sweden.
Northern "i" area of Sweden.
The "je/ji" area besides it.
"je" on Swedish/Norwegian border.
Southern "æ" area of Denmark
Northern Jutland, Denmark
"e(g)" from Western Norway
"e" from Eastern Norway.
In standard languages:
Proto-Norse: ᛖᚲ (ek), ᛖᚲᚨ (eka)
Old Swedish: iak, iæk, iægh
Swedish: jag
Old Norse: ek, ec
Faroese: eg
Bokmål: jeg
Nynorsk: eg
Icelandic: ég
Old Danish: iak, iæk, iægh, æk, ak
Standard Danish: jeg

Only two regions in The United Kingdoms of Auradon speak with a British accent and that's Wonderland and Sherwood.
Olympus have a hint of Greek, but most speak perfect americanised English (lmao)
Most of Cinderellasburg has a heavy French accent, unless it's the royal family. However they can switch to a perfect American accent if they want to, but they don't because they're too stubborn to do so.
Arendelle have a mix of all the Scandinavian countries, but their government language is Norwegian- they all speak either Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Swedish or Icelandic (not Scandinavian technically but it would make sense)
Corona have a habit of slipping into a German accent, since they all speak German there and the government language is, you guessed it, German.
In the Imperial Empire they speak Mandarin, Archaic Chinese and Cantonese, the first being their government language. Nearly everyone there speaks English with an America accent, since they learn that in school.

What Are The Native Languages of TWST Characters? (PT. 1)
Note these are all in my opinion, in no way are these all canon things! Part One - Part Two - Part Three Heartslabyl, Savanaclaw, and Octavinelle characters are all featured down below. While in part two there is Scarabia, Pomefiore, and Ignihyde. And finally in part three you can find Diasomnia and the Night Raven College Staff Members, with Grim and My AU! MC
Tumblr media
Heartslabyul
Due to the linkage between the story of Alice in Wonderland being set in Victorian England, these characters all have a certain form of the language that they natively speak or can speak.
Riddle Rosehearts - British English ; Medium Accent Trey Clover - British English ; Light Accent Cater Diamond - American English ; Heavy Accent Deuce Spade - American English ; Heavy Accent Ace Trappola - British and American English ; Medium Accent
Savanaclaw
As being set inside of Africa, mainly places such as Kenya, this dorm's trio of characters all mainly have a linkage to said African languages. That is besides Jack Howl, who lives in a more winter terrain. So, I'll link him to somewhere such as Norway.
Leona Kingscholar - Swahili and Zulu ; Medium Accent Ruggie Bucchi - Swahili and Zulu ; Light Accent Jack Howl - Sami and Norwegian ; Medium-Heavy Accent
Octavinelle
As the remake of the movie The Little Mermaid is set in the Caribbean Sea, I shall use the languages used mainly in that area as a reference to what their native languages are.
Azul Ashengrotto - Papiamentu and Spanish ; Light Accent Jade Leech - Papiamentu and Dutch ; Light Accent Floyd Leech - Papiamentu and Dutch ; Medium Accent

Love your art and can't wait for more HHstargazers!!! one question... how tf do you pronounce "Magne" cause as I read i just replace it with"morningstar" in my head but i dont like doing that lol
I'm really glad you're excited about my AU ^v^, but as for how to pronounce "Magne"... Sorry. But it seems I'm just as lost as you are in this. 😅👉👈 Because while I have my own interpretation based on my acquired accent, apparently there's more than one way to say it! Depending if you're French, American, or Norwegian just to name some examples. I've heard the different ways people read it out loud, along with its different meanings, and my verdict ended up being: It's fine as long as you tried. XD There doesn't seem to be a universal way of speaking it as I've only seen people be as confused as us (but if there is, I may have also missed it) and it just doesn't seem worth stressing about atm. Maybe someone else would know better, but personally, I pronounce it as "Magh-Neh" just cause my Filipino reading comprehension first thought of it that way and I stuck with it. Again, sorry I couldn't help more. TvT But even the owner of the name won't tell me anything useful. Damn you, Luci "birb" Magne!!! /jk -Bubbly💙

Skwisgaar, Toki, and Murderface all coming from possible rural parts of their countries is so funny but also so comforting.
Do you think Skwisgaar has a "rural"-er dialect than Swedes from the city? Because his childhood home is OUT THERE IN THE WOODS! Like, maybe not super thick because he did grow up in a possible wood logging town, so it would be noticeable. Like think of a Midwest accent with a Swedish annunciation. That's probably him. Like the Dakotas.
And Murderface, if he didn't have a lisp, would he have a southern twang? Like a generic twang, almost movie-like. But it gets hid behind his lisp. I wonder if Stella had been able to afford braces to close his gap tooth, would he have been able to speak clearer. OR, maybe he had a tongue tie and never got it looked at or fixed because of money.
I also like to think that Toki would sound strange in Norwegian and English. Like, because his family didn't speak, his ability to grasp spoken word weakened. So when he did, it's still a little funny. Like, other Norwegians don't know where to place Toki's accent because it is so different. His tones and annunciations are all over the place, and his natural way of speaking is not common. Toki has a "Gottfried" effect where everyone knows who's speaking simply because of his voice. I once read a fic where Toki spoke in NSL (Norwegian Sign Language) to his mother, and I fuck with that honestly.

I’m not an author by any means, and i haven’t written anything in months so this may read badly or not make much sense but i tried to finish off a fic based on Fenrir and Cliff’s first meeting. I discussed them and built them up with a friend, cliff is a farmer from before the world died, he sounds similar to Big macintosh from Mlp. Fenrir is supposed to have quite a deep voice, a lot of Bass, he also has something similar to a Norwegian accent. Enjoy!
Sheep in wolves clothing
It started with a dull noise in the distance. Cliff was gathering whatever he could get, climbing into this building had caused him to cut his hand, and now he needed to find some kind of bandage in all of this mess. He’d looted all the cupboards, and tried to enter a few rooms but the damp air had made it both uncomfortable to try and stand in there, and dangerous as he was sure he’d seen black mould growing on one of the walls.
The noise was growing louder. Was it an earthquake? Or was one of the nearby office buildings about to give way and collapse? It wouldn’t be the first time, at least this time he wasn’t in it when the supports decided to keel. Cliff moved over to the window to peer out, golden light flooding his eyes as he attempted to see what was going on. It was a beautiful day. Years ago he would have been out in a field sitting within the familiar seat of his old Tractor, or making sure his old Sheepdog got her daily exercise quota met. He could almost smell the field, his old work clothes and the meals he used to cook as he felt the warm rays dance on his skin. His eyes closed as he allowed himself to bask in the memories.
The thumping stopped. Had the building collapsed already? Where was the noise?
Cliff opened his eyes, and the sun was gone. Something was coming towards the window, and he only had a moment to jump backwards as a massive object crashed though the remains of it’s wooden frame, flinging splinters left and right, before hooking and pulling the wall off. Cracking concrete and framework scraped his eardrums as he shielded his face, landing on his ass with a dull thump.
There was a faint crash below and then silence, the world seemed to still and the sun did not return.
“Oh no.” A voice rumbled above, the feeling of bass vibrating in Cliff’s chest as he moved his arm and stared at whatever- whoever- was speaking to him.
His heart stopped and everything went silent. Two sets of eyes glowed with an emotion he couldn’t place, focused on him like emerald lasers, all belonging to the same monster, its teeth peeking out from between lips that were easily wider than he was tall. A mess of thick brown hair that greyed at the roots framed its too-human face as it loomed, blocking out the light and filing Cliff’s vision.
A giant, and the biggest one he’d ever seen. He remembers when they first awoke, and how any survivors avoided the monsters, usually in vain as the beast’s sense of smell seemed to catch everyone off guard. And soon Cliff would likely join them.
It felt like a standoff between a mouse and a cat, both staring each other down and waiting for any movement to spring a chase into action. Cliff wasn’t gonna make the mistake of breaking eye contact, and he was fully prepared to sprint if he had to.
“Fuck…” The air vibrated with the sound once again as the monster’s scarred lips moved.
“You’re human. I don’t see much of you anymore.”
Cliff was stumped. It was trying to talk to him, like it wasn’t planning on killing him like many had done before him. Judging by the scars, this behemoth was not a stranger to a fight, so why was he trying to talk like it was mentioning the weather?
“You’re injured?” It questioned, tilting it’s head like a confused dog, the mane of brown hair tangling over parts of it’s head
Cliff had no idea how to respond. Truthfully, he wasn’t injured, but he didn’t know if the Giant was trying to trick him, or if it was genuine. He opted to stay silent.
Brows furrowed and the beast chewed its bottom lip.
A hand came up and toward him, Digits thicker than the trees gripping onto his leg and pulling him forwards before he could even react. The rest of its massive, Calloused palm soon wrapped around him, constricting his arms like a snake, and he was plunged into darkness, feeling the vibrations of footsteps that covered ground faster than he ever could. He just pictured home, sunny fields surrounded by woodland, and prayed to any god that would hear his plea.

Currently working on a whale brothers + Sweden mini fic for an ask, but I feel like I have to point this out. (this is unrelated to the mini fic, I just wanted to assure the asker that I am working on it)
So, I'm sure most of you have seen this before.
Tumblr media
It's a table of how the Nordics refer to one another.
I think this table is a pretty cool thing. It actually shows a lot more about their personalities than you'd think.
For example: Finland is the only one who calls Sweden 'Su-san' he's also the only one to refer to the other Nordics using honorifics or suffixes and this is actually very indicative of his relationship with the others.
(this is all information from Google, I can't speak for it's accuracy.)
The others do not refer to each other using honorifics which indicates a sense of over familiarity. It makes sense, but Finland being the only one who uses them indicates that he probably doesn't feel close enough to them to not use them. Either that or he's just too polite to.
He also refers to Sweden and Denmark with the suffix (San)
While for Norway and Iceland he uses (Kun)
This is actually also shown in the anime. He calls Sweden 'Mr. Sweden' and Denmark 'Mr. Denmark' though he does not do the same with Norway and Iceland. Now, Google did say that Kun is usually reserved for underclassmen and that may be the case for Iceland, but I'm not sure about how that reflects his relationship with Norway.
I've seen people talk about Denmark referring to Norway as his best friend and whatnot, but something I've never seen anyone bringing up is how interesting the usage of Boku and Ore is here.
Finland and Iceland refer to themselves with Boku. This is a generally more humble, polite and refined way to refer to oneself.
The other few use Ore which is described as being much less formal and a lot more masculine according to Google.
So essentially, the viking trio see themselves as big scary macho men, noted.
There's also something that generally intrigues me here.
Iceland has two ways of referring to Norway
Norway and Nore.
He uses Norway for international settings, but only uses Nore when it's just among the other Nordics.
According to Google there are a few reasons as to why that might be.
The one I've gotten most is this:
It's generally rude to refer to someone older than you by a nickname. It doesn't seem to matter any that they're in fact brothers. It looks like the same rules apply regardless of what relationship the two people have.
So it's just so he doesn't seem rude by calling Norway a nickname? I don't think it's that simple.
See, he calls all the others by a nickname, in fact, more so than anyone else. He doesn't change up in international settings for any of the others, even though, if anything, it would make more sense if he did.
Could it be his way of distancing himself from Norway in front of other countries? It would make sense. Iceland did always act embarrassed about being Norway's brother, so maybe this is his way of acting like they aren't as close as they are.
This is also something that happens with Denmark. Both he and Norway refer to Sweden as Sverige, but Denmark also refers to him as Sweden in international settings.
I don't think any of the last explanations work seeing as technically Denmark here is portrayed as Sweden's superior, so it wouldn't make sense for him to change it out of respect.
Google really did not help with this one so I had to come up with my own theory. While the others have some evidence in canon, this is just pure speculation on my part.
Denmark could be saying it in English to make it easier to understand when it comes to international settings. The Danish accent is known to be quite thick and hard to understand if you're not familiar with it. Denmark could be more comfortable with saying Sweden's name in Danish around the other Nordics as they're more familiar with his accent and could easily understand what he's saying.
What about Norway? Well, the Norwegian accent is considerably more coherent even to those unfamiliar with it.
You're more likely to guess what a Norwegian is saying through context clues than with a Danish person because you likely misheard what the Danish person said.
Sweden is also the only one to refer to Finland by... Well... Finland. The others all call him Fin.
We know by now that Sweden is very socially awkward so it makes sense that he wouldn't feel 100% comfortable calling Finland by a nickname, especially when Finland is the only person referring to him by an honorific. Sweden would likely worry that it'd be considered rude if he called Finland by a nickname.
There's something else I find a little interesting here.
Norway calls Denmark anko or Den
While Iceland calls Denmark Dan.
Why the difference between Den and Dan? Both the Norwegian and Icelandic words for Denmark start with Dan (Nor:Danmark, Ice: Danmörk), so why does Norway call him Den?
Maybe he's using the English spelling, but why would he do that? It's not like it's an accent issue. I actually have no clue as to why this is.
Another thing is Iceland being the only one to call Sweden by Sví.
We know in the anime and manga that Iceland has a particularly close relationship with Sweden, so it may be a product of that. Even when it's not directly shown, it's implied that the two are very close given that Iceland can pick up on Sweden's remote social cues better than anyone else. Is this historically accurate? I doubt it, but that doesn't exactly matter right now.
Here's another thing,
Finland's 'Ta-san' comes from the Finnish word 'Tanska' which translates to Denmark, but where does his 'Su-san' come from? The Finnish word for Sweden is 'Ruotsi'
Well it could be that (スウェーデン) the word for Sweden in Japanese is pronounced something like ( Suu-eden) so that's likely where it comes from. It's a little strange that he'd use the Finnish word for Denmark, but the Japanese word for Sweden.
Well, both Japanese and English are used in this table as what I'd like to call (base languages) the table operates under the assumption that whoever reads it either speaks Japanese or English, so they're used as though they were the same language. Essentially (Su-san) acts as (Swe-san) because (Ruo-san) doesn't help people who don't speak Finnish understand who Finland is referring to. Nordic, English and Japanese names for Sweden all start with the letter S. If I told you Sweden is referred to by 'Su-san' you'd probably think it's not that strange as an English or Japanese speaker, but if I told you he was referred to by 'Ruo-san' you probably would be very confused.
I'll quickly run down this one.
Norway calling Denmark Anko.
Anko is referred to as being (kind of like bro)
It is not in fact kind of like bro.
It means red bean paste.
Why does Norway call Denmark this? Well, it could be because of the red in his flag, but that's not what interests me.
Most Japanese nicknames are just shortened versions of one's name. Ice, Fin, Nor, etcetera.
Anko here is very interesting. It doesn't seem to be a common nickname in Japan. It could be that given that Denmark and Norway are referred to as best friends and are shown to be very close. This could be a classic case of a childhood nickname that carried in into adulthood.
Alright, that's all I have to say on this matter. As always, thank you for coming to my yap session. And for the asker who's waiting on that mini fic, I'm sorry for the wait. I just had to get this thought of mine out there before I forgot. I'll try to have the mini fic out as soon as humanly possible.
Also, let me know if you have any other theories about this name table because I'd be very interested to see if anyone else thought about this.
