a folk song from chapayevka village, chornobyl region
this type of song is called голосіння (holosinnya — "keening"), and they are usually sang by women over the dead body during the period between death and funeral. in this song, the woman is mourning both her dead son, and the land that they were forced to leave due to the chornobyl disaster.
West African countries such as Liberia, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, communities have designated biodiversity hotspots, including forests and lagoons, as sacred. This system has served as a conservation tool respected by these communities for generations. The community's existence is intricately linked to the well-being and survival of the biodiversity and natural resources surrounding it.
The Western African method is to reinforce communal stewardship of the land, rather than ownership. The system starkly contrasts with some current, non-Indigenous North American methods of prohibiting humans from living in certain protected areas. Placing a dollar value on conserving these areas risks destroying the very belief system and way of thinking that have ensured their survival in the first place. Their value of biodiversity cannot be translated into monetary terms.
Permyak kokoshnik is a traditional headdress worn by married Komi Perm women. It is similar to the North Russian kokoshnik, but is narrower and, unlike it, when worn, has the ornamented part facing downward, or only slightly raised, which makes it look like a visor.
Crocs are the worst thing that could have happened to clogs/wooden shoes
This is perhaps the Dutchest post I have ever made, but I have a lot of opinions and thoughts about this and I just have to share them somewhere, hoping anyone will listen.
Now, we all know what crocs are and what clogs (or wooden shoes, but I'm using clogs bc it's closer to klompen, the Dutch word) are, but just to show how similar they are, here are two pictures side by side.
[image id: a pair of lilac crocs left and right a pair of traditional wooden shoes with red and black decorations. end id]
Now it's obvious that they have the same shape and easy on and off that mark crocs. And I hear you say: 'But Remi, crocs are way more comfortable than clogs, not to mention more widely available.'
And yes, you would be correct, however, that is because traditional clogs don't have the reach and marketability of crocs. You see, clogs were made perfectly to size and then you'd try them on and if they were uncomfortable somewhere, they would be modified. On a large scale this is not really feasible, since everything must be produced on a large scale and custom shoes are expensive and shoe makers who know how to do this are rare.
However! These are traditional clogs and modern clogs do exist (wow, we evolved, funnn). And that's a whole different story. See the example below:
[image id: a pair of mordern clogs from Gevavi, one is leaning on the other. They're made of black leather with a strap that has the brand name in golden letters on it. The sole is also black and has an arc with in the the front and back grip indends. end id]
As you can see these are also very similar to the croc design (which I am stil convince they used as blueprint). But, these are made from leather with a wooden sole, they also don't have holes in them and are thus water proof.
Like why would anyone buy crocs? They're easy to put on sure, but they don't have any of the things that make clogs great, like the fact that they're water proof and are made of things that are not plastic, but will mostly decay in nature.
Not to mention that they're more stylish and functional. These are made to do farm work on. I have a pair, my mom and dad do, my cousin has them as does my grandfather. (I reccoment the brand Gevavi as pictured above, they're comfy and good quality if you're interested.
Clogs are functional and comfortable. And fit in into aesthetics like cottage core or just lazy core. They can even be a bit preppy if you want.
All in all, 11/10, way better thatn crocs, but crocs have taken over the market and now clogs are disappearing in favor of them, even here in the Netherlands and I think that's so sad.
Clogs deserve better!
Death to the croc monopoly with their shitty product!
in ukrainian northern polissya region, up to the middle of 20th century people still wore a type of shoewear called "lyczaky": wooden shoes made by weaving tree bark, usually from willow or linden. people from the neighboring regions even had a mocking riddle, which goes like this: "who climbs a tree bare-footed and comes down with a new pair of shoes?", to which the answer was "a polissyan lad"
Imbolc is celebrated February 1 to 2. The traditions of Imbolc reach back deep into the pagan history of the Celtic peoples of Ireland and its neighbours. With the Christianization of Ireland, Imbolc was replaced by St. Brigid’s Day . Imbolc as a cultural event has seen a resurgence in recent years, mainly in the neo-pagan community. Imbolc has also grown in popularity amongst others who desire…
I don't remember where this happened or when, but according to the story someone, a researcher maybe, was visiting some local community in a rain forest and one evening a huge snake came in and wrapped itself around the fire. The locals told this person not to do anything and leave it alone. The snake stayed the night and had left by dawn. Well, in the morning this fella of course asked why no one did anything about the snake, why they let it stay. The answer was "It wasn't going to do anything. It was the spirit of a forefather who came to see us." Although I don't believe in spirits or such, this still is a beautiful story and I find their way of seeing the world comforting
