***
Battlemap : Guard post
The PCs infiltrate the ennemy territory through a forest, when they find a structure in the three manned by sentinels. They have to go through, and they can't afford their presence to be reported. This can lead either to a two-level battle, or to an turn-by-turn infiltration scene with the guards' patrols.

Unsure which of these I like better, leaning a bit towards the closer portrait one. May have to come back and give backpack witch another scene to wander.
Looking at these as ‘approaching a dilemma’ vs ‘asking for directions’

Never gonna stop thinking about the tragedy that is qDan. The last thing he ever said to anyone was "I'll see you later". He never made it home. He wanted to help. He promised to be back. He made a waypoint of Maxo's house so he would know how to get back. He played hide and seek with his child and sang him to sleep. He did his best to protect his partner despite never once having a piece of armor or a weapon. "Let me save you" is one of the lines he said that I remember the most. "Let me save you", he said, to someone who was much stronger than him. "I'll see you later", he said, to someone he would never see again. "Tell me when he wakes up", he said, about his child, because he wanted to be there. He wanted to help. He wanted so badly to be there. Let me save you. I'll see you later.
He never made it across the second river.
#bobby talks#i need to look at a map. see where exactly he last logged out.#looked at a map. did you know there is still nothing where he was last? nothing has been built there.#there's a good chance that the tree he last stood by is still standing.#the closest building? the closest structure now to where he was last? personally i think solas is bald because of one or more of these reasons:
woke up after uthenera, couldn't immediately access the fade without effort, had a nervous breakdown and shaved his head. who among us hasn't had an Emotional Haircut.
he does have a bit of the facial structure of a silmarillion elf, and might blow his cover as a Nondescript Elven Apostate™ if he also had the long flowing hair of a silmarillion elf.
easier to maintain and keep clean while doing his hobo lifestyle of wandering around alone in thedas.
he's worried about any surviving murals/statues of him with hair still existing, because that would be awkward if someone sees one and goes "wow, this 5000 year old artifact looks exactly like you! how funny :)"
mourning/penance ritual in elven culture. possibly even bc he feels bad about felassan but cannot otherwise acknowledge the implications. since that would imply that a) it was unnecessary to do that and b) if felassan was right, that means they ran a whole insurgency together, he survived the fall of arlathan and however long in a hostile thedas afterwards, and then fell to his oldest friend's hand for no reason. this would also make sense with zathrian's baldness.
some kind of "i'm locking in, i'm shaving all my hair to show i'm really serious about this quest and nothing will stop me" ritual in elven culture. this would also make sense with shartan, since his ashes ghost is bald too.
#dragon age#solas#you can kind of see that in his concept art iterations#the versions with hair are very...#they look cool but also he looks like he's burdened by the memories of the two trees of valinor or some shit#like he does not look plausibly like a normal hermit at all#the long angular face is already slightly odd and adding the hair just makes him too tolkienesque in a way the other elves aren't#of course then they yassified him entirely for veilguard. awful.#it's so sad bc i read the dai artbook and they put SO much thought into the facial structure and design of every companion#and then veilguard is like ''every companion has to be 100% conventionally attractive and airbrushed or we're firing 12 more people''#it's like they actually took the unhinged chud feedback on cassandra having a Masculine Skull#and then decided to hit every major character with the same beauty standards beam too 💀

Scarlet Hollow decision tree
People occasionally ask to see a decision tree for Scarlet Hollow, so a while back I put one together for episodes 1-4! It’s not comprehensive, as most scenes at this point have at least some variation due to any number of tracked variables, but it accounts for most of the really major deviations.
For those who don’t want spoilers but would like to hear about how we kinda structure the game: I like to talk about it as more of a braid than a tree, which is not a new concept or anything, but I feel like it helps other narrative designers understand how to limit the absolute vastness that you can get with branching structures. The narrative branches off at decision nodes, but instead of continuing down significantly different routes, it comes back together at key moments. So there’s a single narrative throughline to the game-- events unfold in the town and you witness them in some capacity, but your perspective on them, who you’re with, the options available to you, all these are impacted by other choices you’ve made along the way, including the character traits you chose at the start of the game.
It’s not necessarily easier than doing routes, since it means Tony and I have to keep track of a ridiculous number of little variations including one-off dialogue choices players have made AND steering players to the important narrative moments can be tricky, but I think it makes for an interesting player experience! People get so excited when, say, a line at the end of Episode 4 calls back to something they said when they first met Tabitha at the beginning of Episode 1.
ANYWAY, HUGE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT, do not proceed if you don’t want to know about basically everything that’s currently in the game!
Things start to get a little hard to read from here on out....
Episode four had to be broken into four images and looks like spaghetti
I’ll make another one of these for Episode 5 after it comes out sometime next year! (I know that’s a bit of a wait but it’ll be worth it >:D)
#scarlet hollow#spoilers#visual novel decision tree#narrative structure#video game narrative#we don't use trees like this while we're in development#we tend to just remember all this stuff#or reference the game files if we need calrification!#i made this as a resource for people who don't necessarily read the discord religiously#and wanna know how to get certain outcomes#and to see if a map could be drawn without being too impossible to read#getting there with the episode four stuff.......

As someone who works with dogs, I feel compelled to tell you that Kristen’s comment of “What are you, four dogs?” upon hearing Kipperlily Copperkettle’s name is SO REAL.
#I’ve been making linguistics trees because every dog name is just SO SIMILAR#Lily is an offshoot of the ‘consonant-vowel-consonant-ee’ structure#while both Kipper and Copper while not actually being the names of dogs I’ve worked with.#follows the pattern of ‘consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant’#kettle would actually be a unique name for a dog due to its unusual structure and non-traditionalism#but combined with the other three its almost even more stereotypical#the AMOUNT of dog families that have a few basic names and one ‘quirky’ name#the ‘a white family’s herd of yorkies’ is just. so real.#dimesnion 20#d20#dimension 20 fantasy high#fantasy high#fantasy high junior year#fhjy#d20 fhjy#dimension 20 fhjy#fhjy spoilers#kristen applebees
