My Review of The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You
Tumblr media
Well, I got a couple of open slots for the Fall 2023 anime season. I’ll choose this random series without looking into what it is and why it is. How bad could it possibly be?
#FamousLastWords
Tumblr media
Between the time he was eight months old and the time he graduated from middle school, Rentaro Aijou has been turned down by “girls he likes” a grand total of 100 times. The night following his middle school graduation, Rentaro went to a shrine and prayed that when he enters high school, he will get a girlfriend. That’s when he meets God himself.
Tumblr media
As one does in this occasion.
God tells Rentaro that he will not only get a girlfriend that is destined to be his true soulmate, he will have 100 girlfriends destined to be his true soulmate. Unless you are Genghis Khan or a main character on Tenchi Muyo, I call bullshit. God explains that the day Rentaro was born, he kinda dropped the ball while filling out paperwork. He accidentally wrote 100 soulmates instead of 1. To make things worse, if he turns down any of these soulmates, they’ll die suddenly. So, this is a matter of life and death for 100 girls.
Tumblr media
On the very first day of high school, Rentaro bumps into two of these soulmates, Hakari Hanazono and Karane Inda. A pink-haired girl with big tits and a blonde tsundere. Of course, they are! All three are struck by cupid’s drunken, polygamist arrow. Them being a couple is kinda like with Girlfriend Girlfriend with the exception of them all not living together. Heads up, this is under the comedy genre. So, expect a lot of clumsy slapstick here! Well, Rentaro has met 2 of his soulmates. Throughout the series, he meets three other soulmates. A girl named Shizuka who communicates through lines from her favorite novel. Then there’s Kusuri who is a bit of an absent-minded scientist who occasionally transforms from curvy beauty to a Lolita. And then there’s Nano Eiai (pronounced A.I.) who is as monotone as it gets. If you name your kid that, what the hell do you expect?
Before I continue, I’m going to take a couple of shots in the dark here. I’m guessing that this series will only be 11-13 episodes long. Rentaro will only meet 5-13 girls in this span. And the chances of a sequel will be 15% chance.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: No lie, these were the words when it was announced this anime was getting an English dub. “This flaming garbage is getting an English dub?” Hmm, if Brina Palencia is allowed to do Crunchyroll dubs, I say she’s going to play Eiai. Only by the mere fact that she has a reputation for playing monotone girls. But that was something I used to see happen 15 years ago, I doubt it’s still true that Palencia plays nothing but monotone characters anymore. I gotta get with the times as Eiai is played by someone completely different. As for the sub, a mix of newer and well-known seiyuus. This is Wataru Katou’s second main role and seems to be relatively new. I thought he did a really good job as Rentaro. Okay, here’s the cast.
JAPANESE CAST: *Rentaro is played by Wataru Katou
*Hakari is played by Kaede Hondo (known for Iono on Pokemon Horizons, Sakura on Zombieland Saga, and Haruka on Love Live Nijigasaki)
*Karane is played by Miyu Tomita (known for Riko on Made in Abyss, Crim on Interspecies Reviewers, Miko on Kaguya-sama, and Ebisu on Dorohedoro)
*Shizuka is played by Maria Naganawa (known for Kanna on Miss Kobayashi, Plateletts on Cells at Work, and Komekko on Konosuba)
*Eiai is played by Asami Seto (known for Raphtalia on Shield Hero, Mai on Bunny Girl Senpai, CZ on Overlord, Miyoko on Food Wars, and Mado on Tokyo Ghoul)
*Kusuri is played by Ayaka Asai (known for Lisa on Fire Force)
ENGLISH CAST: *Rentaro is played by Travis Mullenix
*Hakari is played by Sarah Wiedenheft (known for Tohru on Miss Kobayashi, Power on Chainsaw Man, Lily on Zombieland Saga, Ruby on Love Live Sunshine, Ariel on Mushoku Tensei II, and Charmy on Black Clover)
*Karane is played by Ariel Graham (known for Tia on Overlord and Leivinia on Index III)
*Shizuka is played by Sara Ragsdale (known for Saikawa on Miss Kobayashi, Young Dabi on My Hero Academia, Saya on Dagashi Kashi)
*Eiai is played by Cassie Ewulu
*Kusuri is played by Lindsay Sheppard (known for Aria on Pokemon XY and Mia on Love Live Nijigasaki)
SHIPPING: After viewing the first episode, I just see Rentaro as one of those harmless anime perverts. He’s like Brock from Pokemon, he’s just going to ask the girl out and anything that happens afterwards, whatever. And for a while throughout the series, I’m inclined to agree with the same sentiment. I don’t recall seeing him get giddy about fondling Hakari’s breasts or anything dirty like that.
Tumblr media
In fact, he tries to be chivalrous to the girls. Rentaro loves someone like Karane despite being the textbook definition of a tsundere. Rentaro helped Shizuka out of her shell and then-some. He showed Eiai that there’s more to life than just numbers. And Kusuri is no longer alone now that Rentaro is in her life. Although, things do get a little raunchy and go beyond holding hands. Rentaro doesn’t play favorites like the other modern harems, he loves all of his girlfriends the same and for some reason, the girlfriends just go along with Rentaro adding more girlfriends.
Tumblr media
In short, every girl is best girl to him. But we have to admit that Hakari’s family has the upper-hand due to a couple of firsts. Hakari is the first girlfriend and the first to be a “bride”. And then Mama Hahari…um…Yeah, it’s best to assume that Hakari and Hahari got the upper-hand here.
WTF MOMENT: French-kissing Vice Principal.
Tumblr media
That’s right. In an anime where Hakari has sick fantasies and we have a girl like Kusuri, who wears diapers and is an 18-year-old in the body of an 8-year-old, the Vice-Principal tainted everything.
That’s it. That’s what made my soul died.
Tumblr media
ENDING: In harem animes, there’s bound to be any number of objections from friends and family members. Mostly family! Would your parents agree to you being in a polygamist relationship? Hakari is told by her mother to end it. Under normal circumstances, yes, that would be the case. But in this anime, Hakari would die. But of course, only Rentaro knows that factoid. If Hakari does die due to break-up, at least she went out in style. She was able to compete in a bouquet toss event that resulted in her and Rentaro dressed in wedding gear and having their pictures taken.
Tumblr media
Hakari’s mother Hahari shuts her daughter up in her room in supreme lockdown. It’s a big house filled with security personnel, a guard dog, trip-laser security, and a cat. The cat’s there doing what cats do. Rentaro and the other girlfriends break in to try and save Hakari. With the help of everyone, Rentaro was able to make it to Hakari’s room. But all in vain as Hakari’s room was also attached to the security system and Rentaro was caught. We then learn about Hahari and why she’s being overprotective of her daughter. Hahari fell in love with a terminally-sick boy at age 13. Hahari decides to have his baby. She gives birth to Hakari and later the boy dies. Hahari later regrets the decision she made and doesn’t want Hakari to make a big mistake with a boy like she did.
Tumblr media
And then Mama Hahari and Rentaro got the spark and AW SHIT, SHE’S ONE OF THE 100 GIRLFRIENDS!
Hahari shook it off and continued to test both Rentaro and Karane on this unordinary relationship with a lie detector. It showed that despite Karane’s severe tsundere attitude, she loves Rentaro. Rentaro is shown to love all of his girlfriends. And that Karane is somewhere in the A-cup range. But the silliness comes to a grinding halt when Hakari is on the ledge of her second-story bedroom window ready to end it all. Rentaro ends up saving her by falling off the ledge with her into the fountain. At least they’re not dead. Hahari gives up her grasp on Hakari and all seems to be forgiven with a hot bath, pajama party, and Rentaro possibly losing his virginity. Oh come on, I doubt that this anime would go so far as to…
Tumblr media
OH, HOLY FUCK! THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED! RENTARO FUCKED HIS FIRST GIRLFRIEND’S MOTHER! HE’S A LITERAL MOTHER FUCKER!
And we go along with the final episode as if we did not see him fucking her brains out. The slumber party went along with usual and unusual moments including: playing cards, spying on Rentaro as he bathes, random acts of lesbianism, a spooky ghost in the window, and other silly shenanigans. We get more serious moments when we’ve got Hahari feel guilty as it feels like she’s betraying her first love (Hakari’s dead father). Rentaro being pure of heart accepts all of her baggage and seals it with a kiss. And then the ghost of Hahari’s first love (Hakari’s dead father) appears before Rentaro.
Tumblr media
As one does! While he was quite defiant about Rentaro dating this guy’s first love and daughter, he sees Rentaro is a pure…wrong words to use about a guy who just lost his virginity to this guy’s baby-mama. Pure enough. Ghost dad approves and passes on. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Rentaro’s first 5 girlfriends are easy to see as they all go to the same school as him. How is Rentaro going to see his sixth, Mama Hahari? Simple. Hahari buys the school. Yeah, the episode ends with her announcing she bought the school. We also see four girls that Rentaro passes by that could possibly be girlfriends #7-11. Pfft. I’ve seen that happen before in season finales. Keijo had an ending like that where we saw all these new characters for one second and then the series never came back.
Okay, let’s see if what I said at the beginning of this review still stands.
*This series was 12 episodes long. I was correct that it was only going to last between 11 and 13. *By series end, Rentaro has officially gotten 6 girlfriends. Even if we add the 5 girls we saw at the end of episode 12, that would equal 11 girls. So, I was right about the number of girlfriends. *My 15% chance of a sequel guess was proven wrong immediately as this got the green light for a second season when the season one finale aired.
Shit, this series was something else. I can honestly say there were a lot of moments in 100 Girlfriends I would have never expected to happen. In a normal harem anime, there’d be a lot of fighting between the girls, the first girl might get a kiss, and the anime would end there so you would have to go to the manga to know what happens next. Or, wait nearly 30 years to see proof of a harem like with Tenchi Muyo. But we all must remember that we are in the 2020’s. If this fucking Goddamn decade has taught me anything, anime has gone above and beyond the norm here. We’re in the decade of Interspecies Reviewers and Redo of Healer!
This anime blew away everything that you’ve seen when it comes to harems. Rentaro has kissed every girl. He is loyal to all of his girlfriends and thensome. And unlike a lot of other harems, he lost his virginity by the season’s end and not to the first girl. I gotta give credit where credit is due in this department. And by the looks of the manga, Rentaro is still loved and quadrupled girl intake. Last I saw, he has over 20 girlfriends. The creator and artists are determined to make the 100 girlfriends thing happen whether the anime continues or not. I gotta respect that kind of tenacity. I am beyond curious to see how Rentaro can possibly handle over 20 girlfriends. So, I am definitely looking forward to a second season for this anime.
And if you want to see a harem done right for the 2020’s, get your ass to Crunchyroll and watch this series.
Tumblr media
FINAL THOUGHT: If Rentaro never existed, this anime would be a Yuri anime starring these two. Prove me wrong.

Information on the origins of Tenchi Muyo! is revealed!
Original post
For the better part of three decades, co-creator of Tenchi Muyo!, Masaki Kajishima, has held fast to the claim that Tenchi Muyo! was “all in his head since high school.” However, for Comiket 100, interesting information has come out shedding light on what the origins of this juggernaut franchise actually are.
For the forthcoming Comiket, Kajishima will be releasing a redone version of his doujin The Night Before the Carnival: Heisei Edition 1, which released at Comiket 54 on August 16th, 1998. Released with brand new commentary, this new doujin is called The Night Before the Carnival: Original Edition 22.08.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heisei Edition 1 – 1998 & Original Edition 22.08 – 2022
Across both doujins, we are introduced to characters “Masaki” (featured in red, said to be the daughter of the first emperor of Jurai), a blue haired character named “Lashara Moon” (A name reused in Photon: The Idiot Adventures), a character named “Lyon”, and probably the most recognizable character named “Koro-chan” (a Ryo-Ohki lookalike who is half cute cuddly character and half dragon, it’s name being used as cute creatures in Photon, as well as Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar). The character can also transform much as Ryo-Ohki would, and can use an ability called “Ghost” which lets him permeate matter (aka phase through walls). Sound familiar?
Tumblr media
Masaki
Also of note, is that there is a young beast female character who is referred to as “Humanoid Ryo-san”. It is also implied that a female beast character can quickly mature and mate, a concept that Kajishima has apparently been wanting to do for a long time…
Tumblr media
Koro-chan concepts and Lyon
“The story centers on the common inheritance-related troubles of aristocratic daughters who are running away from pursuers aiming to assassinate them. The protagonists are caught in the middle of the action, and as they run for their lives, they become completely savage.”
Tumblr media
As mentioned in the doujin, these images were being made 10 years prior to the doujin’s original 1998 release, with the Lashara piece showing a date of June 16th, 1989, true to the “Heisei” part of its name.
Tumblr media
Lashara Moon and Humanoid Ryo-san
Despite Kajishima’s claims to the contrary, this new information of his actually corroborates what Hayashi said in an interview from 1994, that Tenchi Muyo! was nothing more than “idle discussion” between himself and Kajishima in ’90, and gives us an interesting view into some of the ideas Kajishima cannibalized from this to use later in Tenchi and beyond.
One year after these concepts were drawn, a job working on AIC’s Iczer-3, and merging his ideas with Hayashi’s and others’, and Tenchi Muyo! as we know it was born.

----------------------
Falere is a Ardat-Yakshi, a Ardat-Yakshi is a rare genetic condition that is in Asari...
one could view a "Ardat-Yakshi" as being kind of like a Succubus. it might be a weird idea, but what if in a Crossover between Fallout x Mass Effect, Ghouls are Immune to the deadly powers of a Ardat-Yakshi.
I mean even there could be some people who are Immune to Succubus's full powers, like how someone who could be part human, earth angel and succubus...
who wouldn't just be in danger from a full succubus or incubus but also humans as well.....which is why it is good to make sure to have gems to protect you when you sleep. I'm still not sure if that would work for everyone, but maybe it is still possible that it can work for others.
it be interesting if Falere and Hancock were ship together, it would be 100% Fanon and not 100% Canon.
my wanting to Crossover ship Shockwave and Pearl, had to do with being inspired by a drawing by Blitzy-Blitzwing, that I saw.
it was of the Hazformers version of Shockwave, and because what he says in the drawing, made me think of Pearl....
and well here we are, a Crossover ship between a Gem and Cybertronian.....which the drawing is in two, one where it's just them and in another drawing I did...
so in other words, I had copy the drawing I already did, and placed it into a separate form, and still worked on the other drawing as well...
it be interesting in a Crossover Timeline, The Gems are creations of Primus & Unicron's Little Sister....be funny if Unicron gets really scared if he hears that his and Primus's Little Sister is mad at them.
and the first Gems that their little sister had created would be White, Yellow, Blue and Pink Diamond.
also in my own weird way, I can't help but view the Autobots on Cybertron in the TFA Universe, as being like the Homeworld Gems...
while the Decepticons from TFA Universe, being like The Crystal Gems.... I mean come on, if Autobots are the ones who try to make something like the  "Project Omega" that is suppose to be a dangerous weapon of mass destruction....
ya can pretty much tell who the true bad guys are, because they made Project Omega to be a dangerous weapon, and it wasn't even made by Decepticons. so Megatron was being truthful about the Autobot Tyranny, sure Cybertron wouldn't be any better with Megatron ruling it, but besides making Project Omega...
Autobots have misused their own Planet's Sonic Canyon's own living metal to make protoforms, and those protoforms don't even get a chance to grow up and are made to age to probably to 16 Ano-Cycle Old.
plus Sari and Wheelie are possibly the only ones that have been born from Cybertronian Asexual Reproduction in their generation, with it being possible that Wheelie could be a One Ano-Cycle Older than Sari.
I still think that Megatron could be Sari's Cybertronian Father, and who was in the lab that Sari's baby self was found in, and since her Human DNA comes from her Human Dad Isaac Sumdac...
her CNA must come from her Cybertronian Parent, and that would 100% be Megatron, plus it couldn't be Optimus or anyone from his team, because they were under water and still in stasis.
I think the reason why the Autobots who live on Cybertron haven't went through the "budding stage" in so long, might have to do with their corrupted leaders who run Cybertron.
one of those corrupted leaders would of course be Ultra Magnus.
 Frag The Autobot Elite Guard!
The Allspark is the cure for the Autobots being sterile!
a Protoform could have a spark given to them by either The Allspark or Vector Sigma, but for all we know, the TFA Universe's Vector Sigma may have been corrupted to cause sterilization.
Autobots off Cybertron on one of the Autobot Commonwealth Planets, could of still make new sparks for their future children, by not only the budding stage, but also having a piece of their spark placed into the new protoform.
plus all the planets that are part of the Autobot Commonwealth, are most likely the original homes of organic life, but the Autobots took them over and most likely got rid of all the organic life that originally lived there.
so yeah, Autobots from TFA Universe, are likely like how Homeworld Gems use to be, taking over organic worlds and making new gems.... and the Decepticons from TFA Universe, are like The Crystal Gems, but of course slightly different....
yeah I'm weird, viewing The Autobots on Cybertron as "Homeworld Gems" and The Decepticons as "The Crystal Gems" in the TFA Universe.... the Project Omega from TFA could be seen as a Counterpart of The Cluster from Steven Universe.
even both Omega and Cluster were made to be weapons by The Autobots of Cybertron & The Gems From Homeworld...
but that doesn't mean they have to be weapons, because Omega was able to form a type of Father & Son bond with Ratchet, with Ratchet being the "Dad" of course...and Steven formed a friendship with the Cluster.
Tucker from Red Vs Blue, should of kept that armor that originally belong to Maine, the idea of him adopting Ryo-Ohki as his daughter, just seem like a adorable idea.
even if it would be more of a Fanon Crossover Timeline, but it would mean that Tucker doesn't just a daughter, he also gets his own space ship. XD
and when Ryo-Ohki isn't being a space ship, she's on top of Tucker's head or on one of his shoulders, being all cute and adorable.
this would also make my first fan art of Chazwick, I gave him metal shark teeth and a eye-patch as well as a T-Shirt that says “Tuna-Himbo” in that drawing.
also gave him a Robot Earth Angel Girlfriend, who is possibly more of a one-shot type OC and I decided to name her Charleen.
Chazwick is also suppose to be drinking some kind of soda in that drawing as well.......if I had to say what Charleen’s Halo and Wings are made out of it, it would be Ethereal and Technology of The Feminine Energy.
and in theory the known Seven Rings or Circles that is ruled by like Lucifer, Asmodeous, Mammon and others...
use to belong to a type of Feminine Earth Angel Princesses, who if my theory is correct are the true rulers of those Rings that were part of the Earthly Mother’s Earth Kingdom, until those guys took it over when they fell and made half of it a part of what is known as “Hell.”........once again, you can’t leave Masculine Angels alone for a few minutes without them causing some kind of trouble....
I mean it is just a possibility, and it’s okay that not everyone takes that theory seriously....even if it could be possible.
also even if the drawings of this post isn’t really mature, but just in case I am placing “mature audiences only” and “not for kids” for the tags.
also I hope some like the idea of Chazwick with metal shark teeth and a Eye-Patch, some might understand why I gave him metal teeth.
even if Chaz is a bit of a perv, he is kind of a funny Tuna-Himbo.
and it’s okay if it is just me and maybe a few others who view him as a Tuna-Himbo.....once again, the nickname “Tuna-Himbo” make into my head when watching the episode that he appears in, it was of course my first time watching that episode when it came out on the day when I found out it was uploaded.
and of course when watching it, the word Tuna-Himbo came into mind.
and of course that episode is for mature audiences only, like 18+...
anyway I will sign back on here later, to check out some more fan art.
also I want to say that if I put “do not reblog without permission” and you see it, like it being both mentioned at the very top and even in the tags.
please do NOT ignore it, I can understand if it might of not been seen at first, and I can allow the reblog if it was a accident.
but if it was ignored on purpose or if I am being lied to about it not have been seen, just so they wont get in trouble, and I hope NO one does that, because I don’t think I can forgive if that were to happen....
just try to keep a eye out for the words that say “do not reblog without permission.” and anyway, hope some like these drawings that are being post together in this one post.
and it’s okay that not everyone ships Shockwave x Pearl.
my shipping those two was inspired by a Hazformers drawing with Shockwave’s demon form in it, and what he says in the drawing had reminded me of Pearl.
I’m weird and I’m weird shipping Shockwave x Pearl.

The true ending of Tenchi Muyo

I'm Sorry But I got to say this...Stop with the Incest.
So, I know probably not many people will be reading this but I feel I need to let this out somewhere. Cause it has been bothering me for a little while. So, I have been watching the effects of the release of the New Game of Thrones prequel and the rewatching of the Series Flowers in the Attic by V.C Andrews. And, It has made a disconcerting and discomforting thing come to my mind.
People are too comfortable with incest.
And, I am using Comfortable nicely. Because Honestly, the real words that I want to say are that it's almost like we want these types of relationships to happen. We almost seem to desire or worship them. And, I know worship is a little hard but we do. I mean if we look back at our Media and the past two years. Did anyone else notice this increase in Incestuous implications?
Because I did!
And it made me look at a lot of Media. From Fandoms to Books, Comics, Manga, and Tv Shows. There is a lot.
And, because I am that person. I can give you a list where Incestuous Relationships were committed, Implied, or even attempted.
Vampire Knight
Bates Motel (Psycho)
Cruel Intentions
Arrested Development
Mortal Instruments
The Ultimates (Marvel)
Tenchi Muyo!
Please Twins!,
Machete (2010)
Blue Lagoon
Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991)
The Crow (1994)
Gone with the Wind (1939)
ENNEAD
Dynasty (1980)
Family Affairs (1997)
Nip/Tuck
The Fosters
Riverdale,
True Blood
Taboo
Alan Moore's Lost, Girls,
Angel Sanctuary
Lady Devil
DevilMan Lady
Game of Thrones
House of Dragons
House
Animal Kingdom
Smallville
Banshee
Neighbors
See
Eastenders
Yeah, And Those are some I remembered. And, Most of these inputs are ones where people honestly encouraged the Incest in the relationship. I mean I saw people actively clap their hands at it like it was great. Or Just kind of Shrugged their shoulders and went with it. And, Excused it like it was a normal Relationship. And, it is not a normal relationship.
Incest is a biological thing we are not supposed to do. It is determinantal to the health of our minds, body, and society but we put it on everywhere and we excuse it. We ignore it. And, We kind of laugh at it.
And, It is a little scary. How quickly we kind of look at this and are ok with it. Or Praise. Or Excuse it. I Repeat :
We know the ramifications of Incest.
Hell, We have living historic figures who are products of these unions and the damaging consequences of them. But, Still, we praise and fawn over the idea of these acts.
It is almost like we want it to happen in media and life. And, Are we forgetting about the terrible effects that it has upon us? Are we forgetting about the people who are hurt by these “relationships”?
Are we just romanticizing their trauma?
Or Even Fetishising it?
And, Even excusing it.
Because It seems that way.

STMPD Recommends Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Fanfiction: ArrowSMorgan's Group Chat
Remember how I said I wasn't super invested in Cyberpunk Edgerunners? Well, uh, I guess I lied. The anime itself is okay at best, BGC is better, but there's some pretty dope fanfiction in all this mess.
Yes, that's right, I'm doing reviews of Edgerunners fanfiction, stuff that has more views than even Divine Patronage by an order of magnitude more often than not. Most are, as I said in my previous post on the topic, true-blue copium and know it - one might say that an ending which revels in killing off all its cast save two is a bit of a bummer and cries out for alternatives. I've even seen one fic, one which I haven't read yet, argue that a different ending might actually be more punk, less, uh, nihilist? I think that was the implication.
Anyway, let's start with the Edgerunners fanfic that has over 50K views and has earned every single one of them. Ladies and Gentlemen: Group Chat.
The premise is simple if goofy: Lucy, main heroine of the show, starts a group chat for everyone to dick around in, except for Pilar 'cause the last time they did one with him he got people arrested. Which is painfully ironic, because 2 chapters in and the immediate topic of conversation is Lucy talking to Rebecca about how massive David's dick is. Other topics of conversation that come up - how old Kiwi is and how Rebecca thinks anyone who's mature is automatically old, Rebecca's weird cat Butterbean, whether or not Maine is David's dad... and then Maine and Dorio bite it.
And then the second trick the premise is pulling besides shitposting comedy comes into play. Namely, the characters actually communicate to one another. David gets depressed, like really depressed, like as depressed as you would expect from losing the only father figure he ever had in his life, and instead of resolving to hunt down every netrunner who might come after David, Lucy actually tells Rebecca what's going on, and gets her and Kiwi to go buy him groceries and weed and Stay At His House.
After that, communication... happens! And that leads into what even the author calls a Tenchi Muyo situation, with David hooking up with Lucy, Becca, and Kiwi (yes! yes, the Kiwi who decided to sell David out in the anime before he dragged her down with him, that Kiwi!) all at once! And then things get weirder when David meets Adam Smasher in a bar! And they actually get along okay even though they both know better than to try being friends, but David's like super chill with the big ol' murder-borg who talks like, in David's own words, an anime villain! (Smasher types in all caps, too, because of course he does. It reminds me of Homestuck in a lot of weird but good ways.)
So the fic is mostly slice-of-life, with sex scenes relegated to spinoff fanfictions in the same 'series', and with a multi-viewpoint action sequence turned into this really cool micro-visual-novel in itch.io. It's all good fun, like really good fun, especially once the gang settles down and unwinds a little and the world is built out in amusing ways - Kiwi being a master at fighting games, David trying to make Arasaka-brand curry and making sure to get the right brand, not the Adam Smasher super-spicy stuff, David being super cute with Rebecca's cat, David getting to beat up Katsuo again for a different job. Despite still feeling grounded in the world of 2077, it all feels natural, humane, wholesome in a way a lot of other fix-it fics can't quite nail. It feels like - and I'm pretty sure this was the intent, the author's a Fate fan - the Hollow Ataraxia to the main Fate Stay Night.
And what better note to end on than that? Hollow Ataraxia's a blast to read, and so is Group Chat, for roughly the same silly reasons.
Damn. I'm really getting into Edgerunners fanfic even though most of it is a) copium and b) not always of the highest quality. Watch this space; I've got more coming.

Who’s Who In Japanese Roleplaying?
Having now looked at some of the distinguishing characteristics of Japanese tabletop RPGs, let’s dive a bit further into the scene’s movers and shakers.
Since the Japanese roleplaying industry has a fairly clear divide between game developers and game publishers, I’ve decided to look at these separately. There is, of course, another important group in the RPG space not covered here: independent developers, who I’ll be exploring in a later post.
PUBLISHERS
Kadokawa
A true media juggernaut, Kadokawa’s businesses include books, magazines, movies, music, games, and even the popular video-sharing portal Niconico - Japan’s answer to YouTube.
The conglomerate initially entered the roleplaying space in the mid-’80s trying to capitalize on the success of Dungeons & Dragons - first by licensing TSR’s D&D novels and gamebooks, later via pushing RPG coverage into its electronic gaming magazine Comptiq. That gamble paid off when Comptiq’s monthly Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Record of Lodoss War - originally pitched as a way to teach newcomers the basics of D&D - became a breakout transmedia hit.
Over the course of the ‘80s and ‘90s, Kadokawa and its subsidiary Fujimi Shobo published a steady stream of original, licensed, and translated games, often based on Kadokawa’s own IP. Its most ambitious project of the era, MAGIUS, was a beginner-oriented universal RPG supported by 30-odd standalone releases covering franchises from Tenchi Muyo! to Neon Genesis Evangelion. However, the line’s sales fell short of expectations; this, coupled with an overall decline in RPG sales, saw Kadokawa effectively withdraw from the market in the late ‘90s.
After the release of D&D’s Third Edition in 2000, Kadokawa became notably more active in the tabletop space again, both directly and indirectly: in 2004, the conglomerate acquired the parent company of fellow publisher Enterbrain, who had been pushing out notable works like FEAR’s popular Night Wizard and the 6th Edition of Call of Cthulhu. Kadokawa would continue to release dozens of RPGs through Enterbrain and Fujimi Shobo until 2013; following an extensive restructuring, the company’s RPG output is now published directly under the Kadokawa name.
Tumblr media
Kadokawa’s clout and aggressive media mix strategy created additional mainstream visibility for RPGs and RPG-adjacent properties like Record of Lodoss War during the hobby’s boom years.
Shinkigensha
The other heavyweight in the industry, Shinkigensha was founded in 1940 but only formally incorporated in 1982. At that time, the company was best known as a publisher of computer guides, but soon diversified into fantasy and military reference books as well a small number of RPG products.
Following the gradual revival of the roleplaying market in the early 2000s, Shinkigensha significantly stepped up its activities in the space, investing in translations of high-profile titles like White Wolf’s New World of Darkness line and the 4th Edition of Shadowrun alongside a variety of homegrown releases. In 2003, Shinkigensha also launched Role & Roll - at that time Japan’s first new roleplaying-focused magazine in almost a decade - in collaboration with gaming company Arclight. “Roll and Roll RPG” would subsequently become the publisher’s dedicated imprint for tabletop releases.
Like Kadokawa, Shinkigensha maintains a sizeable portfolio of original and translated games, the undisputed crown jewel of which is Call of Cthulhu - currently Japan’s most popular RPG by a significant margin. The publisher also has cultivated a fruitful relationship with the developer Adventure Planning Service, whose Saikoro Fiction line has become a staple in Shinkigensha’s Role & Roll RPG output over the past decade.
--
Hobby Japan
Hobby Japan is the epitome of “from humble beginnings.” The company started off as an import shop selling foreign-made die-cast cars, but grew dramatically in the ‘70s and ‘80s by expanding into areas like model kits and wargaming. In 1984, Hobby Japan released Japan’s first translated RPG, Traveller, marking the beginning of a four-decade-long relationship with the roleplaying market.
While the company is probably best known for its localized games, Hobby Japan’s output during the boom era included several notable originals, including Metal Head - Japan’s first cyberpunk RPG - the sci-fantasy mech saga Wares Blade, and the first edition of FEAR’s Tenra Bansho. Hobby Japan’s Tactics magazine - later retooled as RPG Magazine - also served as an important early voice for the industry, creating greater awareness for the hobby among the Japanese public.
Unlike Kadokawa and Shinkigensha, Hobby Japan trades almost exclusively in translated titles these days. For nearly twenty years, they were WotC’s official D&D licensee in Japan, overseeing localization of the game’s Third, Fourth, and Fifth Editions before WotC semi-abruptly revoked their publishing rights in late 2022. The company currently handles the Japanese editions of Cyberpunk RED, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and the D&D 5E-compatible Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos.
--
Tsukuda Hobby
An off-shoot of one of Japan’s more notable toy manufacturers, Tsukuda Hobby was also a pivotal force in the embryonic tabletop scene, publishing the country’s first homegrown RPG, Enterprise, its first fantasy RPG, Roads to Lord, and its first generic ruleset, WARPS. Despite this, the company never seemed to achieve the kind of success its competitors saw and left the tabletop market in 1993, ultimately going bust just a decade later.
--
Shinwa
Formerly an importer of American wargames, Shinwa struck it big when it secured the D&D license, but was unable to sustain its momentum once Group SNE’s Sword World entered the market in 1989. After its localization of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Second Edition failed to find an audience, Shinwa abandoned the roleplaying industry, sliding into obscurity and bankruptcy soon after.

DEVELOPERS
Group SNE
Formally incorporated by sci-fi translator turned gaming evangelist Hitoshi Yasuda in 1987, Group SNE could arguably be seen as Japan’s answer to TSR. Thanks to the one-two punch of its phenomenally popular Record of Lodoss War campaign series and the blockbuster RPG it eventually spawned, Sword World, this small company dominated the early years of the roleplaying industry. Beyond its own creations, Group SNE also oversaw the localization of many major Western properties, including Shadowrun, Mechwarrior, GURPS, Tunnels & Trolls, Earthdawn, and the D&D Rules Cyclopedia.
Following the release of Magic: The Gathering, Group SNE pivoted to collectible card games with 1997′s popular Monster Collection, one of the Japan’s first homegrown CCGs. Unfortunately, subsequent titles proved significantly less popular, and by the mid-2000s, the company renewed its focus on the tabletop space with Sword World 2.0 in 2008, which was followed by Sword World 2.5 in 2018.
Group SNE’s more recent output has included localizations of Kenneth Hite’s Trail of Cthulhu and the anthropomorphic fantasy RPG Pugmire, licensed RPGs based on the Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Goblin Slayer franchises, and a number of original board and card games. The company also produces the quarterly magazine GM Warlock, which covers a variety of analog hobbies.
Key Works: Record of Lodoss War, Sword World, Crystania, Demon Parasite

Far East Amusement Research
More popularly known as “FEAR,” Far East Amusement Research represents the second generation of Japanese RPG talent, coming to prominence just as the country’s roleplaying market started collapsing in the mid-’90s. Born from a collective of experienced writers and designers, FEAR played a major role in the hobby’s transition to a more narrative type of play and was instrumental in popularizing the use of structured, scene-based game sessions.
In its earliest years, the company struggled to get its titles to market as more and more publishers withdrew from the roleplaying space, ultimately opting to establish its own publishing and distribution arm, Game Field, alongside a monthly magazine called Gamers Field. As a result, from 1998 to 1999, FEAR was virtually the only significant source of new RPGs in the Japanese market.
Unlike its competitors, the company has never ventured too far outside of the tabletop genre. The one notable exception is its work in the video game industry: since the mid-’90s, FEAR’s staff have provided story and world-building support for a number of titles, including Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default II.
Key Works: Tokyo N◎VA, Tenra Bansho, Seven = Fortress, Double Cross, Night Wizard, Alshard, Arianrhod
--
Arclight
Technically no longer an independent developer - the business has been wholly owned by Shinkigensha since 2020 - but bears mentioning all the same. Arclight started out in the play-by-mail market as a branch office of the company You-En-Tai before going independent in 1998. After a brief stint in electronic gaming, the company refocused its operations around the analog scene, and now develops and publishes a broad slate of board, card, and roleplaying titles. Its most prominent property by far is the Japanese edition of Call of Cthulhu, which Arclight has overseen since launching its 6th Edition back in 2003; in addition, the company currently handles Japanese localization for Pathfinder and Shadowrun.
CoC aside, Arclight is arguably more notable for its general business activities than its game releases: the company operates dozens of specialty retail outlets in addition to providing editorial oversight for the monthly RPG magazine Role & Roll and organizing Game Market, one of Japan’s most significant analog gaming events.
Key Works: Call of Cthulhu (6E/7E), Pathfinder (1E), Shadowrun (5E)

Adventure Planning Service
Formed in 1987 by designer Koji Kondo (近藤功司) - not to be confused with the legendary Nintendo composer - APS has had three distinct incarnations over the years. During the RPG boom, the group’s claim to fame was its generic rule system Apple Basic, which underpinned most of its early releases, including 1991′s Kiki’s Delivery Service-indebted cult classic Witch Quest. By the early ‘90s, however, Kondo and his colleagues shifted their attention to the electronic gaming market, providing production, planning, and story support for various titles across six console generations in addition to penning an assortment of strategy guides and fanbooks.
The company’s return to roleplaying in the late 2000s was driven by the arrival of developer Toichiro Kawashima (河嶋陶一朗), whose Saikoro Fiction system now powers a majority of APS’s releases. To date, there have been over a dozen Saikoro Fiction titles, most notably multi-genre horror RPG Insane, modern-day wizarding game Magicalogia, and contemporary ninja drama Shinobigami.
Key Works: Witch Quest, Satsupe, Labyrinth Kingdom, Shinobigami, Insane, Magicalogia
--
ORG
Though effectively inactive in the tabletop space now, ORG was one of the very first RPG development groups to go professional. Its founder, Masayuki Onuki (大貫 昌幸), earned his spurs translating the original D&D and would subsequently author WARPS, an anime-inspired universal system emphasizing high power levels and flashy action, which released soon after ORG’s establishment in 1987.
Whlie the company developed a number of original and licensed roleplaying games in the ‘90s, it is perhaps most fondly remembered for Legend of Double Moon (ダブルムーン伝説), a play-by-mail “reader participation” RPG featured in the gaming magazines Marukatsu Famicom and Marukatsu Super Famicom from 1989 to 1993. Following Onuki’s death in 1993, ORG largely refocused its activities on the CCG market, helming tie-ins like the Digimon and Monster Hunter card games.
Key Works: WARPS, Legend of Double Moon

BtT Light Novel Club Chapter 11: True Tenchi Muyo! Volume 3 (Washu)
Tumblr media
Welcome, dear readers, to the eleventh meeting of our Beneath the Tangles Light Novel Club. Up for discussion today is what is perhaps the least of the three True Tenchi Muyo! novels, but also the most satisfying in a number of ways. While Jurai and Yosho filled in important gaps that advanced the story of Tenchi Muyo!, Washu feels almost mid-story, a volume that raises more questions than answers while being the first of the books to focus on one of the main girls, and a fan favorite at that—the enigmatic genius, Washu Hakubi.
Tumblr media
Framed in a unique way—reminiscent, actually, of the Mihoshi Special—the story begins by reminding us of “Hello Baby!”, the episode where we first got a glimpse into Washu’s sensitive side and learned that her back story was perhaps far fuller than we first imagined, far longer and deeper than any of the other girls’. The way into this tale is through none other than Mihoshi, who begins to regale the Masaki household with a family story that transitions into the main one, not realizing that her family’s account is part of Washu’s also.
Like the others in the series, Washu is a quick and exciting read. It is an absolute thrill to read about Washu’s childhood (or second childhood?) and her early years at the Academy. The story humanizes Washu, who in the original OVAs often flows between an absolutely lovable caricature of a mad scientist and a wise, ethereal being (note: only a very bit of her chousin origin is discussed here); the novel catches her during a time of innocence. In fact, the story really could be described as Washu’s loss of innocence, describing a journey from her years as a caretaker among orphans through education and her greatest loss, the one that still haunts her in the present time, as seen in “Hello Baby!” Covering so many years, the action often moves too fast and doesn’t necessarily feel like one big, coherent piece, though perhaps it wasn’t meant to—Washu continues to expand the world of Tenchi Muyo, which would of course later become larger and even more vast than fans would have imagined.
But enough from me—we want to jump into actual discussion. As we finish this series (the first we’ve completed!), I invite you all to answer the following questions in the comments. Feel free to answer some, all, or none, instead focusing on some other aspect of Washu which you’d like to discuss:
In what ways do you better understand Washu after reading this novel?
Do you see Mihoshi’s relationship with Washu differently after this novel?
Why do you think Washu prefers to stay in the guise of a child after the events involving her family and into the modern day?
Is Washu a more or less compelling character after you’ve read the novel?
Did anything surprise you about Washu’s backstory?
Do you understand Mikamo‘s decision to leave home with Mikumo?
Did Washu make the right decision at the end of the book?
Jeskai Angel, our newest club member, also read along. Having never read the previous installments in the series nor watched the show, it presented a great opportunity to look at Washu as a standalone novel. I asked him some questions from that perspective:
TWWK: Was the novel confusing since you had little context for it, having not read the other novels or watched any of the anime?
Jeskai Angel: I found the novel less confusing than I feared it might be. The very beginning features a bunch characters I’m obviously supposed to know already, but the bulk of the book focuses just on Washu and introduces new elements or characters just fine. There were occasionally other things that an experienced Tenchi fan was expected to know (light hawk wings or whatever???), but it wasn’t a big deal.
TWWK: All the light novels are surprisingly accessible, contributing greatly to the larger canon and containing plenty of fan service (the big connection you wouldn’t know, and that which set the Tenchi community on fire when it first was published decades ago now, was Mihoshi’s relationship to Washu), but working as stand-alone works. I’m glad it worked that way for you!
Jeskai Angel: I assume the big revelation that Mihoshi’s is Washu’s great granddaughter? Interesting.
TWWK: Yes! Though an astute viewer might surmise that Mihoshi had a special relationship with Washu, it was still incredible to find out that they’re related, and comical as well, since they’re on quite opposite ends of the intelligence spectrum. But onto the content of the novel! What are your general impressions?
Jeskai Angel: I think I most appreciated the humor. There was a hilarious line about cooking potatoes in a munitions factory early on, more humor as the story went on (Washu going faster and faster every time she had to run anywhere). I found the book’s overall pacing a bit odd. Sometimes you’d get a super detailed fight scene, for example, then other times the narrative skips months or years into the future with hardly any summary. It wasn’t bad, just a bit perplexing. The book also tried to cover an unusually long span of time (at least compared to other light novels I’ve read that take place over days or months at the most), which I suspect accounts for some of the peculiarities. The book also lacked resolution — specifically, it made a big deal of Washu’s mysterious origin, then dropped the subject and never came back to it. I’m sure her true nature has been explained in some other element of Tenchi media, but in the context of this book it felt weird.
TWWK: Those are good points. Vol. 3 certainly rushes through a long period of time, and is especially speedy toward the end. The mysteries about Washu, too, feel strange within a self-contained book. I guess it would be a surprise to tell you that the mysterious jewels are connected to Washu’s actual being—she is one of the three chousin, goddesses who created the universe of Tenchi Muyo. And coming back to her, did you find Washu’s story to be compelling?
Jeskai Angel: Compelling is such a squishy word, but yeah, I’d say the story was adequately compelling (enough that I wanted to read to the end, at least). The author was successful at portraying Washu as smart without making every other character a buffoon, which not all books with would-be clever protagonists pull off. And Washu turned out to be a really noble person (at least as far as this story is concerned?): her tireless efforts to see son again, plus her love great enough to let him go because she believed that was in his best interest, is quite impressive.
TWWK: Speaking of Washu’s intelligence, I wanted to get your take on this as someone also in this world—what did you think of how life was presented at the Academy versus your own experience in academia?
Jeskai Angel: In real life, grad school isn’t nearly as…hmm…zany as Washu’s experience. Also, I received some really generous financial aid, but the Juraians (sp?) took the idea of the graduate fellowship to pretty crazy extremes. I just wish real-life history PHDs were valued as highly as Juraian philosophy students. LOL. The emphasis on independent study is definitely true to life, however. That’s how writing a dissertation is, but even before that, college involves a lot of unstructured time that requires self-discipline to use.
TWWK: Interesting, though I imagine your FAFSA package didn’t provide a cavernous laboratory or office spaces, or a hundred maids and butlers!
Jeskai Angel: Yeah, my fellowships let me afford a small apartment, not a mansion or astronomical observatory.
TWWK: Alright, one more question and then I’ll give you the chance to talk about anything else you’d like. If this was just a one-volume work, what would you title it?
Jeskai Angel: Probably just “Washu.” Or maybe “Washu’s Love”? Nice ambiguous title with multiple meanings.
As for other thoughts inspired by the book… Can I just take a moment to rant about what a scummy coward Washu’s erstwhile husband was? Let me get this straight: you marry a woman, but are too cowardly to tell her your real name. You marry this woman, but instead leaving father and mother to cling to her, you still prioritize dear old dad’s political situation ahead of your wife. You marry this woman and have a kid with her, but instead of telling her you’re abandoning her and why, you just disappear with your son and never communicate your wife / your son’s mother ever again. And then when you this woman has come to visit, you hide so you won’t have to face her. Am I missing something? Is this guy not scum? He seems as much a jerk as Washu seems a noble, loving hero. I feel sorry for both this guy’s wives.
On a totally different note, the idea of wooden space ships makes no sense but sounds super cool. The casual reference to self-mutilating surgery as if it’s normal and reasonable (i.e. gender “reassignment”) was a little disturbing. The equally cavalier mention of porn was likewise problematic. It reflects the acceptance of porn as normal that I’ve noticed in various anime. If pornography is really as normal as Japanese media seem to imply, that says their society has serious trouble. Not that America has anything to boast of…
And that’s it for us this time around! We highly encourage you to pick up the volume if you haven’t yet, and Jurai and Yosho as well, which I would describe as better written works and nearly as compelling. And stay tuned next week, as we announce our twelfth (!) selection for the BtT Light Novel Club!

TFA x Hazbin Hotel AU Theory: If Vox Was a Techno-Organic In His Human Life.
even if this is more of a Fanon Crossover AU type theory, but I can’t help but have the thought pop into my head that has to do with Vox having been originally a protoform, even if it wouldn’t be canon, but would be fanon only in a Crossover Timeline.
like Vox might of never found out of his true heritage, and that his parents had found his newborn sparkling protoform self and when one or both of his parents touch the sparkling protoform, the protoform turned into a seemingly normal human baby, it could also turn out that both his parents weren’t able to have children because they are both sterile, and when they found that protoform that would become Vox, it was like a miracle.
the DNA Vox got from his parents, makes him their biological son, but his CNA comes from his Cybertronian “Mother” either the Cybertronian Mother be a Mech or Femme.
and if any Cybertronian had to be Vox’s possible mother in a Fanon Timeline...
I would pick Kup, who had went through the budding stage and is one of the Cybertronians that didn’t get infected by the sterilization program, so the higher ups wouldn’t have to wait for many years for the protoform to fully grow up and become a Autobot...
he could of had send Vox’s protoform away, not being able to take responsibility of parenthood, which I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the Autobots have done this....because they couldn’t handle the responsibility of taking care of a protoform that was born through budding...
Vox’s protoform ends up on Earth, and ends up being found by his soon to be human parents, they both end up touching his protoform and making him their biological son, and even in Vox’s death, he never found out that he is half-cybertronian and was originally a baby protoform that was technically abandoned by Kup.
picture the relationship between Kup and Vox being like Ryoko and Washu from one of the different timelines of Tenchi Muyo....
even if Kup uses the same words as Washu that “I didn’t raise you to be a good for nothing.” and Vox using the same words as Ryoko “you didn’t raise me at all.”
if Sari is able to, she could probably reveal that Vox is like her, of course once more this would only be in a Fanon Crossover Timeline and wouldn’t be canon to the main canon of both TFA and Hazbin Hotel.
the only difference between them, would be that Sari’s “Mom” is Megatron who is a Decepticons and Vox’s “Mom” is Kup who is a Autobot.
if Vox’s human parents ended up in the same place as him, or at least one of them, they could end up telling Vox the truth, that he wasn’t human at first, and he only became part human the moment they touched his protoform and it ended up absorbing some of their DNA and making a human baby appear in the protoform’s place.
both Vox and Sari, could have a hybrid soul, where it was originally a normal cybertronian spark, but also is a hybrid soul.
like when a baby protoform ends up becoming touched by a organic, and becomes that organic’s child, it ends up causing the spark to become a hybrid.
also it might be possible that a protoform that does become part human, does end up having both a spark and a heart, the heart would just be a mix of organic and synthetic.
even if this idea and theory wouldn’t be canon, and I am very well aware of this, and it is meant to be a Fanon thing....
I think the idea of Vox being techno-organic in a Crossover Timeline with different series all living in the same universe, like maybe Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, Transformers Animated, Transformers Prime, Transformers Movie Series, Ben 10 Omniverse and Steven Universe....would be interesting.
and in that crossover it would turn out that all the rings of hell are all in the body of Primus and Unicron’s younger sibling’s body, who is named Atlas, and who is inside of the Earth instead of Unicron.
Atlas needs to become fully canon and not just semi-canon and only appear in that crossover comic between G.I. Joe and Transformers.
hopefully one day that will come true.
and like it said in my other theory about a Crossover Fanon Timeline,
Azmuth would be the true creator of Primus (who has the same name as that planet in the Ben 10 series), Unicron and Atlas.
but all three were transform into transforming robots, because of that living metal seed that was implanted on them by that Quintessa.
Vox being part Cybertronian is just a fun Crossover idea that could work in the Fanon Timeline, like if it turned out that Vox was Chara’s Dad and him being part of the reason why they hated humanity, that might be a weird idea to some that has to do with a Undertale and Hazbin Hotel Crossover, but it’s possible that in some Undertale Fanon Timelines, Chara’s parents weren’t really good people and could be part of the reason why they hate humanity.
if Vox ever got hurt, like in the chest, what if it had revealed his spark, and he feels confused and scared like Sari did when she saw her arm.
and another weird thought that pops into my head is crossover ship that some might of not of thought of before, and that is Knockout x Vox....
maybe that would be a interesting Crossover ship, and if Knockout had to form a binary bond with any smaller organic, it might as well be Vox....well one of the options of organics that Knockout could form a binary bond with.
no one has to take this crossover theory seriously or in the wrong way, Vox turning out to be techno-organic and part cybertronian, would only be in a fanon crossover timeline.

In the year 2000/2001 I was age 13/14 and I was obsessed with Dragon Ball Z, among a few other anime at that time. There was this web directory called Anime Turnpike. (The real OG's may remember it lol) It was a large database of links to various anime & manga websites. From there I came across a fan-based website called Angel’s Throne of Prince Vegeta. The website creator’s name was Angel and she lived in Montreal, Quebec (I live in Texas, USA). She also did fan art. I, too had created a fan-based website, but mine was dedicated to Goku & another character from a completely separate anime not related to DBZ, Ryoko of Tenchi Muyo.
She was two years older than me, so we were pretty close in age. I really liked her art & would email fan art requests periodically. I remember talking a lot about DBZ with her and we also both loved Eminem. Lol. We quickly developed a friendship and started to write each other letters & would mail each other gifts for holidays & birthdays. I remember one of the packages I got from her was a Goku clock & a DBZ VHS tape that was in French. (which I actually STILL have!)
I loved it since it was not something you could find in the states. We even spoke on the phone once or twice.
Over the years our communication decreased & eventually came to a halt for years, until one day, about 10 years ago I decided to look her name up on Facebook. I found her & I sent her a friend request. I immediately messaged her & asked if she remembered me and she said she did! We have been able to keep in touch over the years through Facebook. Recently over the years we have exchanged gifts a few times for Christmas & she has mailed me Christmas cards of her & her family almost every year for the last 3-4 years or so.
The internet (especially social media) can be a lot of things, negative things especially, but this is one of the beautiful things the internet & now social media are capable of; making friends with people you share a common interest with. It is easier these days since we now have different social media platforms but we didn't have that when I was a kid. We just had fan-made anime websites & AOL chat rooms. 😆
FB allowed me to find her again & keep in touch with her all these years. Now, after 18 years or so of friendship I will be flying to Quebec in March (next month, holy shit) to finally meet my childhood friend I met online through a DBZ website when I was 13 years old. I have literally had dreams throughout the years of meeting her. 😭
This is one of the many reasons why Dragon Ball Z and anime is, and has remained so important and meaningful to me throughout my life. 🧡💙

Idk if y'all watch Hazel on YouTube (y'all should watch Hazel on YouTube, esp. you anime likers), but she just put out this video on Tenchi Muyo, specifically talking about Tenchi Universe, and unlocked some major nostalgia for me.
youtube
Absolutely love the vid, love the series, loved the look back on it all.
Also, have to add the frame from the bit at the end where Hazel's wife jumps in, because it made me die laughing (and in my case is partially true):
