A one shot where Bucky doesn’t like the reader and makes her life at the compound a little rough? Like enemies (maybe to lover or friends?) and she is like the sunshine personality 🥺🥺🥺
I live for this shit This type of angst where he's mean and finds her annoying even though she's a sweetheart, ugh, yes. YES.
Bucky groaned, trying to ignore the shooting pain that seared in his abdomen, clutching an old t-shirt to stop the bleeding from the stab wound he'd received during his latest mission.
"You good there, terminator?" Sam cocked an eyebrow watching Bucky unconvincingly nod, grunting a half assed yes before squeezing his eyes shut and flopping back on the seat.
"You're gonna need stiches" Steve snorted, shaking his head at his stubborn friend.
"I'm fine" Bucky gritted out, preferring to bleed out on the jet instead of going to the med bay where he'd be surrounded by doctors and needles and if he was really unlucky, you.
"Seriously? That's the second shirt you've bled through, I don't think the serum's gonna cut it, punk" Steve sighed, knowing how Bucky felt about getting medical care but it wasn't like he had a choice. As soon as the jet landed, Bucky was shoved in the direction of the medical wing, pouting and grumpy as he limped with Steve supporting him. Bucky frowned when Steve pushed him to lay down on the examination table, grumbling and wincing under his breath.
"You stay here. I'm gonna finish writing up our reports, don't go sneaking off" Steve chuckled, giving his friend's shoulder a squeeze before leaving. The soldier stared up at the florescent lights, his eyes anxiously darting about the room, hoping and praying that at the very least he wouldn't have to deal with-
"Good afternoon Bucky!"
For fucks sake.
Bucky groaned at the chirpy voice that piped up from the door, his brows knotted together from frustration.
He hated it. You'd ask about his day as if he wasn't there go get sewn up. You'd talk to him like you'd known him for years, almost oblivious to the fact that he was a former brain washed assassin. Every time he saw you, you were so giggly and pretty and bouncy and cute and happy and it irked his soul because it was to the point it was unnecessary. I mean you were just so kind and sweet to everyone as if everyone deserved such amazingness from such a wonderful person, okay that's enough Bucky.
The world wasn't fucking sunshine and rainbows and he had no idea why you acted like it was.
"Steve said you needed a few stitches so-
"Where's Dr. Cho" Bucky cut you off, hoping anyone else would help him so he could get on with his day, willing to take the needle and thread himself instead of having you do it while talking his ear off.
"Oh, she's with another patient right now but it's fine, I promise I'll get you out of here soon, do you mind if I remove your vest-
"Yeah, I got it" Bucky huffed, wincing to get his gear off but you stopped him, urging him to stay down.
"No, it's okay, I just wanted to make sure you're okay with it, I'll cut it off, don't worry"
Bucky nodded, lying back down while you grabbed a tray with medical supplied, carefully cutting around the blood soaked material and discarding it. You cleaned the area, mumbling apologies incase the alcohol caused any pain, moving on to closing the cut.
"I heard about the mission you all went on. I can't even imagine going through all that, it sounded terrifying. You're very brave Sargent" You smiled, tossing your gloves aside after patching Bucky up. Bucky grunted as he hopped off the table without a word, ready to whack Steve on the head for telling you of all people he needed help.
"If you need anything else, let me know! Just get some rest for a few days, it'll heal soon-
"I know" Bucky walked out of the room without looking back, his shoulders relaxing when he was far away from he med wing. There was truly no reason for him to be this annoyed but he was tired, in pain and he knew for a fact there would be a pile of papers for him to fill out in the conference room.
You didn't take Bucky's grumpy attitude to heart, understanding the stress that came with going on missions, getting injured every time coupled with the fact that he was probably still healing from his own past. You put away the supplies before taking a coffee break, running into a very excited Tony along the way.
"Hey cupcake, just who I was looking for, do you like chocolate or vanilla"
"Tony, I told you, you don't have to-
"That doesn't answer the question. Pick one or the other or both or another flavor, all the flavours, but give me something"
You giggled at the way he looked at you expectantly, sighing seeing as he wouldn't let up until you answered.
"I'm not picky, you know I'd love anything. Get something everyone would like, seriously, I don't even need all this, I'm just the nurse-
"Stop that right now, there's no one else like you" Tony huffed, planting a quick kiss your head before texting his caterers about everything he wanted, ensuring everything was perfect, especially when it came to you.
-
You woke up to the sun streaming through the curtains, stretching before getting out of bed and padding over to the bathroom to go through your morning routine. You had the day off, throwing on your joggers instead of your typical scrubs and making your way down to the kitchen, grabbing ingredients for baking.
You hummed, scooping out spoons of cookie batter, plopping it onto the tray and throwing it into the oven, cleaning up the area in between, waiting for the oven timer to go off. You set the chocolate chip cookies onto a tray, piping the last bit of icing onto the top and sweeping away the smidges of frosting that got onto the counter.
Bucky blinked at the smell of baking, making his way to the kitchen for some water after a run. He groaned, nearly walking right back out when he saw you singing to yourself, arranging cookies in a circle, each one decorated for a different person in the tower.
"Good morning Bucky" You smiled while he mumbled, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, "I-I made made cookies for everyone, did you want one?" You asked hopefully, looking at the little dog tags you'd piped on the cookie you made for him while he shrugged in response.
"Why do you keep trying so hard, do you not have any friends?" Bucky scoffed, ignoring the fresh plate of cookies that sat on the counter, not caring that your face had fallen. He wanted to strike a nerve, feeling a sick satisfaction at the way you silenced yourself, giving him the peace and quiet he wanted.
"S-sorry, I just thought-
"You thought what?" Buck cocked an eyebrow, the tick in his jaw making your stomach churn.
"Nothing, sorry" You mumbled, turning back to continue cleaning while he chugged the rest of the bottle. "I've just leave them here if you want one later on-
"No, I don't want one now and I don't think I'll want one later either" Bucky glared at you, tired of you always trying to do things for others as if anyone asked.
"I-I'm sorry I didn't-" you bit your lip hard to keep from crying, not wanting to annoy Bucky more.
"Why do you always act like everything great? Like we don't come back from almost dying, risking our lives while you go about like the world is perfect"
"I just-I didn't mean-
"You didn't mean what, to be annoying? Did anyone even ask for this?" Bucky nodded to the cookies while you shook your head, feeling ridiculous and embarrassed, not realizing others also probably found you annoying.
"I-it was my birthday, I thought-" you sniffled, choking back a whimper, "I wanted to do something nice - never mind" You bit your lip to keep from breaking down, blinking back tears as you scurried off to your room, without looking back.
The initial satisfaction Bucky was short lived as he stood in the now empty kitchen, tossing the bottle aside. The plate caught his eye once more as he walked by, reluctantly stopping to look at each one, your skilled hands decorating each one with clean details. He instantly spotting the one you made for him which had been dusted with silver just like his tags; he had no idea how you managed to get his name and number piped to precisely.
Not that it mattered.
Bucky continued to make his way to the gym, feeling a little bad that he made you cry but he figured you'd get over soon enough, after all that seemed to be your strong suit, you were always happy and smiling anyway.
-
"You're coming tonight, right?" Steve dropped the weights he was curling while Bucky frowned, unsure of what the captain was referring to.
"Why, what's tonight" Bucky grunted, still in the middle of his set.
"Seriously, Tony told us like a month ago"
"Yeah, fine" Bucky huffed, not really caring what it was about, knowing he'd be dragged to go regardless. He finished the rest of his workout, retreating back to his room to shower. He flopped onto his bed after, grabbing a book from his bedside table seeing as there was still plenty of time till he had to get ready.
The book had been a Christmas present from you and as much as he hated to admit it, it was perfect and one of his favorites. He tried to focus on the words, feeling bad again thinking about how your face had fallen earlier when all you did was offer him a cookie.
Maybe he went a little overboard with his reaction...
Bucky shook the guilt he felt, hoping that you'd be running around somewhere getting ready for whatever tonight was.
-
"Where's y/n" Sam looked around the room seeing everyone else present but you, the night in full swing seeing as Tony had gone all out as usual "I swear she said she'd be here, this is literally her birthday party"
"I didn't see her" Nat frowned, putting down the drink she was sipping on, scanning the room again, "Now that I think about it, I haven't seen her all day"
Bucky felt a deep pang in his chest when he realized the party was for you, his stomach twisting in knots.
"Where's our birthday girl" Steve asked as he joined the others, the guilt making Bucky feel even more sick. He ran a hand over his face while the others continued to wonder where you were. "I hope she isn't working, she deserves a day off, she already worked over time for 3 months straight when we were running back to back missions"
Bucky remembered that.
They'd all been sent out on missions spread across different months and you'd been the one on call to patch them up the entire time. You hadn't complained once even through you were thoroughly sleep deprived. At the time Bucky was annoyed you were in such an upbeat mood when they were all scraping by but you had been struggling yourself.
"I fucked up" Bucky groaned, feeling awful for how he'd treated you in the morning and for how he'd been acting towards you in general.
"Why, what did you do" Steve's face twisted in confusion while Bucky's face reddened in embarrassment. Steve was aware Bucky complained about you but he figured it was because his bestfriend got flustered around the pretty nurse, he'd seen Bucky get tongue tied plenty of times whenever you walked by.
"You were a grumpy asshole to y/n, weren't you" Sam frowned seeing Bucky's guilty face. The soldier didn't say another word, leaving the group to find you instead, debating on getting Steve to clock him in the jaw first. Bucky ran to the elevator, pushing the button to your floor, hoping he'd see you making your way down, only to find the hallway empty. His heart broke hearing the soft sniffles coming from your room, the door closed. He gently knocked on the door, your cries quieting down as if you'd silenced yourself to pretend you were asleep instead of opening the door.
"Y/n?" Bucky called for you only to be met with more silence, "Can-can you please open the door?" His heart started to beat faster when he head your footsteps approaching the door, clicking the lock open; you were still in your joggers from earlier, your face puffy from crying.
All because of him.
"Sorry, I fell asleep" you lied, keeping your face trained on your feet, worried Bucky had come to yell at you about the party Tony had thrown for you, "and I'm sorry about the party, you didn't have to go if you didn't want to, I promise I didn't tell Tony you had to come, I know you don' like me-
"No, no baby no, stop" Bucky hushed you, his heart breaking when your voice cracked, rambling out apologies. His body moved on its own, wrapping his arms around you while you started to cry again, rocking you while holding you to his chest. "Please don't cry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, you have nothing to apologize for doll, nothing at all"
Bucky held you tightly while your body shook, feeling sick with himself for how he'd been treating you. You'd never been anything short of sweet and he'd made a point of always letting you know he couldn't care less. He lifted you in his arms, walking over to your bed, sitting down with you in his lap, ready to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness.
"I didn't mean to be so annoying" You shrugged, fidgeting with your fingers, the light that always made your eyes twinkle dimmed from Bucky's words.
"Y/n, please, no" Bucky whispered, pleading with you to stop. "Don't doll. It was never ever you, please let me apologize. I've been awful to you, you've done nothing wrong. You've always been an angel, sweets, it's me whose been an annoying asshole. I don't deserve your kindness but that's never stopped you from giving it to me when I least deserved it"
"You deserve kindness Bucky" you gave him a small smile, one that didn't meet your eyes and Bucky felt his eyes sting. Even when he was the one in the wrong, you were still comforting him with your sweetness.
"Y/n, I don't know anyone that deserves the sort of kindness you give. I don't know anyone that would deserve someone as wonderful as you. You're a light for everyone when its dark. I was a fuckin' idiot for everything I've ever said to you. That isn't an excuse for how I've been treating you doll, I know that. It's just- I've been awful to you and you've never done anything wrong. I'm truly sorry sweets"
"Its okay Bucky" You whispered, reaching up to wipe the tear that streaked down his face, your cheeks heating up when you realized you were still in his lap, "S-sorry, I didn't realize-
Bucky shook his head, holding you securely in his lap, not wanting to let you go.
"You have nothing to apologize for, pretty girl" Bucky shrugged, loosening his hold in case you wanted to get off but your doe eyes darted around instead, settling further in his lap. "You really are like sunshine"
"You're very charming, Sargent" you smiled bashfully while Bucky chuckled, his heart beating erratically in his chest when your hands came up to toy with the tags that hung around his neck.
"Would it-would it be if I kissed you?" He whispered shyly, blushing when you nodded, pressing his soft lips to yours. Bucky took his time kissing you, pouring every ounce of his feelings with soft touches, holding onto you like porcelain.
"Everyone's waiting for you sweets" Bucky gave you a gentle squeeze, tilting your chin up to meet his eyes, hoping that you'd still want to go to your own party. "Would you like to go downstairs?"
You slinked off Bucky's lap to get ready, the soldier watching you with heart eyes the entire time you did your hair and makeup. He knew he had a lot to make up for, starting with the fact that he'd never hurt you again. He was still upset with himself for ever hurting you in the first place but he was ready to protect your innocent heart for the rest of his life. His breath hitched in his throat when you finished applying the last of your gloss, blushing when you slipped your hand into his so he could lead you down.
"Theres our cupcake!" Tony grinned when he saw you approaching, the rest of the team cheering making you giggle. Steve smirked seeing Bucky follow closely behind you in protective mode, keeping his hand around your waist. He spent the entire time, doting on you, following you like a lost puppy.
By the end of the night, he had you in his lap again, shamelessly looking at you with heart eyes while the rest of the team watched curiously, his sole focus on you.
"Happy birthday sweet girl" Bucky whispered, pressing a kiss to your cheek while you nuzzled into him with a shy smile, "My little sunshine"
-
Now imagine Bucky doesn't quickly get over the fact that he was a dick. Sure you forgave him because you're an absolute sweetheart but Bucky can't even deal with the way he'd acted, especially when he had a crush on you the entire time and just refused to acknowledge it, acting like a cunt instead.
He's the most lovestuck boyfriend to ever exist. Your office is always full of fresh flowers. He's a clingy little puppy, outside of the medwing until your done, always finding excuses to sneak in and see you. You had to tell him a papercut wasn't a good enough reason for him to request your services.
Neither was a stubbed toe.
The time he nicked himself while shaving was the worst because he was pouty until you kissed him better.
He slips his dog tags around you, his possessive/jealous side occasionally sneaking out.
He doesn't even hide the fact that he's a simp for you, knowing he's the luckiest person on the planet to get the sweetest person in the world. He shows your off like no tomorrow, proud of the angel he gets to call his.
He absolutely loved his sunshine.

When I say S3 Crosshair was speed-running Hunter’s Dad arc from S1-2, this is what I’m talking about:
Tumblr media
They’re the only CF99 members Omega has a one-on-one conversation with in 1.01 "Aftermath"
Both help her escape danger at an evil cloning facility, thanks to unseen assistance from Nala Se (1.01 and 3.03)
Both make a choice to go back for her instead of securing their own freedom (1.01 and 3.04)
Both initially try to send her away, reasoning she'll be better off without them in her lives (1.02 and 1.15)
Both initially tell her to stay away from them for her own sake, but she persists and eventually wins them over (1.01 and 3.01)
Both are mistaken as her dad by other characters (2.13 and 3.04)
Due to Omega's influence/impact on their lives, both of them become open to trying new things. For Hunter, it's things like treasure-hunting and settling down on Pabu. (2.05 and 2.13) For Crosshair, it's things like bribing/hustling people instead of shooting them, and meditating for peace of mind. (3.04 and 3.08)
In S1, Hunter and Omega average one meaningful one-on-one conversation per episode. In S3, Crosshair and Omega average one meaningful one-on-one conversation per episode.
Parallel scenes of her copying their body language, facial expressions and personal quirks (1.01 and 3.06)
Parallel scenes of them checking on her physical and emotional well-being after she’s been in danger (1.09 and 3.07)
Parallel scenes of them watching helplessly as Omega is taken away by an Imperial ship (2.16 and 3.11)
Parallel scenes of Hemlock torturing them after they tried to protect Omega (2.14 and 3.15). FUN FACT: Hunter and Crosshair are the only two CF99 members Hemlock ever talks to.
Parallel scenes of Omega convincing them to let her endanger herself for the greater mission of finding Tantiss: “I need to do this, Hunter” (3.05) VS. “Focus on the bigger mission, Crosshair.” (3.11) In both cases, they are initially unwilling to go along with her plan bc they fear for her safety, but they both ultimately agree to support her brave and selfless decision.
Parallel scenes of Omega purposely endangering herself by attacking her captor, but she has complete confidence that Hunter and Crosshair will save her in 2.10 and 3.15, respectively.
Parallel scenes of Omega absolutely gagging them: “Why not? Isn’t that what soldiers do?” (1.12) VS. “I never gave up on you, did I?” (3.09) FUN FACT: Hunter and Crosshair are even sitting in the same seat on the Marauder in both scenes!!
(UPDATE:) As someone else pointed out here, parallel scenes/lines of them aiming their guns at someone threatening to take Omega away and saying, “Not happening.” (1.13 and 3.09)
Parallel lines like: “You’re wasting your time — they’ll never turn her over” VS. “Omega’s not going anywhere with you.” (2.14 and 2.16)
Hunter when he tries to send Omega with Cut and Suu: “You have to go, Omega. It’s for your own good.” VS. Crosshair when he tries to have her captured and sent off Kamino: “It’s for her own good, and yours.” (1.02 and 1.15)
Hunter when Cad Bane is after her: “Omega, get behind me.” (1.08) VS. Crosshair when CX-2 and Imperial troopers are after her: “Stick by my side and stay down.” (3.07)
Hunter telling the others to leave him on Daro and Omega protesting in 1.14 VS. Crosshair telling the others to leave while he fights CX-2 and Omega protesting in 3.07. (And, in both cases, she literally had to be pulled away by other “co-parent” in Echo and Hunter, respectively.)
Hunter made a “deal with the devil” in the Devaronian matriarch to try to find Omega in 3.02. Then Crosshair made a deal with a different type of devil in Rampart to find her in 3.12. (And they were both 1,000% done with their respective devils: “We heard your syndicate had the connections needed to find the Imperials’ base, and since we’ve upheld our end of the bargain, now it’s your turn.” VS “We got you off the planet, now tell us where Tantiss is.”)
The first time Hunter ever fully hugs Omega is in 3.04, after she escapes Tantiss the first time. (To clarify: she had hugged him a few times before, but he hadn't really hugged her back.) VS. The first time Crosshair ever hugs Omega is in 3.15 after she escapes Tantiss the second time.
Crosshair telling Hunter in 3.05, "You let Omega be taken to Tantiss. She went through what she did because you failed" ... only for Crosshair to be in the EXACT same situation himself later in S3.
Also, let’s never forget about the moment in 3.07 when Crosshair went full Helicopter Parent™️, and Omega said, “You’re as bad as Hunter!” Like, even Omega thought Crosshair was turning into a dad! 😂
Also, after he fully reintegrates into the family at the end of 3.05, Crosshair basically becomes Hunter's "co-parent."
There are several scenes where they are paired together to talk about Omega's safety or something, while Wrecker is elsewhere. (And even when Wrecker is there, the shots tend to focus more on Hunter and Crosshair, like when they find Batcher barking on the beach in 3.09.)
Of course, this all culminates in the final confrontation with Hemlock on the bridge. I don't think Hunter or Crosshair could've navigated that situation alone, especially given their injuries and how high-stakes it was. They HAD to do it together, which has been their approach since 3.05: "Not alone. We'll do it together."
(UPDATE: I go over some of these points more in my CrossDad Episode Rankings post. Give it a read, if you haven’t already!)

Don't Let Go
Between the Bones (Leon x GN! Reader) - Chapter 36
You get some unexpected support, and you and Leon come to an understanding that neither of you likes.
(Cross-posted from Ao3)
Previous Chapter | Next Chapter
Chapter Index
Tumblr media
They had the day off, but the first thing that everyone wanted was answers.
To his credit, Krauser took the time to answer them all as best he could.
“Why didn’t you warn us?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Do they have the authority to even do that?”
“. . . Yes.”
“What are they so afraid of us blabbing about?”
“You’ll be learning that in the coming weeks.”
“Are those assholes really going to be staying?”
“Yes.”
Leon stood in the back as the rest of the squad learned what he already knew: what they’d suffered for. What some of them were being sent home for. No one was happy with the answers given, but most understood. Leon understood. The reasoning, at least. Not the practice. Not the torture. He would never understand that.
Nor would he understand the answer to the question Valeria hissed out, one that had been eating away at Leon, too. The one thing he wasn’t reasonably sure of, on Krauser’s end regarding the whole experience.
“They had our letters,” she said, her foot tapping against the floor beneath where she sat on her bunk. “From months back.”
Leon watched shadow overtake Krauser’s eyes, that crease between his brows deepening.
“Hadn’t heard from my mom. Is it because they held those letters from us?”
Krauser nodded once, his gaze unwavering even if it was full of regret. “Yes.”
“And you knew?” Valeria pressed, hurt evident in her features.
Another pause, before Krauser nodded. “Yes. STRATCOM procedure. No communication with the world outside during training.”
“So any letters we sent home . . .”
“. . . Were never sent.”
Top-secret shit, even before the bioweapons were brought into play.
Not that it made the pill any easier to swallow.
Still, the Major didn’t try to shift the blame off of himself, even as Valeria fixed him in a scalding glare. If looks could kill, Jack Krauser would be a pile of ash on the ground. “That’s bullshit,” Valeria snapped. “Sir.”
“Watch that tone, Soto,” Krauser met her, steel for steel. Leon had seen the man make soldiers give him fifty push-ups for mouthing off . . . but he’d also seen him allow Leon to speak his mind. He’d seen the Major listen to Leon’s own concerns, even if the Major seemed to like quite literally everyone else better than him. So, even if he barked at Valeria now, Leon wasn’t surprised when a moment later, the Major just gave her an apologetic look. There were a lot of those that he gave that morning, until there were no more questions.
None that anyone was brave enough to ask, anyway.
Their personal effects were passed back out to them - the ones that had been abandoned in the Humvees when Reed and Hellman had taken the squad. Three days ago. Three days and a lifetime, it felt like.
Just like how Raccoon City felt like a lifetime in one night.
Pain had a way of doing that, didn’t it? Warping the world. A day became forever, forever became attached to the idea of something terrible. A cage with no bars. He wondered how long he and the rest would be stuck in that cage? How long the bruises would take to heal, how often, like last night, someone would hear movement in the barracks and jolt awake, expecting a blow for having fallen asleep . . .
Everyone was still so quiet as they unloaded their freshly returned packs. Hard not to be when Andersen and the other three who had failed were there, not bothering to join in the unpacking. What was the point if they were going to be gone by tomorrow anyway?
As for the rest, the day was theirs to do with as they pleased, and no one had any idea how to spend that free time.
Not until heavy footfalls against the floor made Leon and those around him - Alenko, Williams and Valeria - look up, and they found the Major standing there, his hands behind his back. He looked at each of them, gaze sweeping from right to left before landing on Leon and hardening. Sharpening. Leon was sure then that he was about to hear a speech about his failure. About how he’d broken and the only reason that he and Valeria were being allowed to stay were because of Krauser’s own intervention. Or maybe that this entire thing was because of a request that Leon made. He could think of no other reason for the loathing in that stare.
Instead, the Major looked back at the group as a whole. “Heard you had some trouble back at Fort Benning,” he said, and Leon’s brow furrowed. So the conversation wasn’t going to be about the beatings taken in those cells, but rather the one that he and the others had taken in defense of one another. “Got a call from Commander Cortez a few days back. Said you got into a fight. That you put twelve of his men in the hospital. That true?”
That, too, seemed like a lifetime ago. Alenko was the one to nod and answer Krauser’s question. “Yes, sir.” He frowned as he spoke, the expression tugging at the splotches of blue and purple on his face.
Krauser nodded once, his face set in stone.
“Good,” he finally said, and Leon recognized veiled pride in his eyes. “Make sure you don’t end up in the hospital too, next time.”
It was one of the few orders that Major Krauser had given in his time here that Leon agreed with.
Of course, when the Major unclasped his hands and tossed what he’d been holding onto the bunk nearest him, Leon felt an entirely different wave of emotion sweep through him. The little radio rolled onto its back as it landed amidst the scratchy blankets, leaving a flash of recognition to cross Williams’ and Alenko’s faces as they saw it. The same radio that had been in Cortez’s office. The same one you’d somehow stolen for them, that you’d all been listening to on the ride home before everything went wrong.
Krauser was giving it back to them.
“And don’t make a habit of stealing from your Commanding Officers.”
Leon might have laughed, under different circumstances.
Instead, he found himself even more surprised as Krauser went on, this time looking towards Valeria. “Your letters,” he began, “they were from your mother?” Hellman must have told him, then. Or maybe Krauser had read the letters himself, after the fact. Leon hoped that wasn’t the case. He hoped he hadn’t read through Sherry’s letters before Leon even had the chance to. Still, he knew enough about the contents to ask.
Valeria’s mouth twitched down, and she nodded once in response, stiff and all too plainly upset.
Krauser nodded too, and again Leon saw conflict in the Major’s face. Whatever combat his thoughts were doing, though, it was over quickly. “I’ll do what I can to get you clearance to write home. All of you.”
That was all Krauser said . . . but just before he turned away, his eyes found Leon again. Fixed on him like crosshairs. The words spoken were all that were said, but Leon could see that Krauser had more to say. Something lurking just beneath the surface, unformed but sharp. Leon only glimpsed it for a moment, but it was there all the same. Leon almost didn’t care if the Major was angry, now though. Because even if he didn’t have a home to write to, really, he could write to Sherry.
He might be able to tell her he was sorry for not answering her letters. To tell her he was okay, to make sure that she was alright too.
So, whatever was behind the sharp look that he received now, Leon just met that sharpness with gratitude. He didn’t get much but a moment of that gaze losing its edge. Just a second or two, and then the moment was gone, and so was Major Krauser, moving down the rows of bunks. He hesitated as he neared Andersen, the older soldier sitting on the edge of his bunk, looking shell-shocked.
Krauser looked down at him, his jaw tensing as he reached out a hand, patting the other man on the shoulder.
Then, lifting his chin, he left the barracks.
More silence followed, until at last, Williams spoke up. “Looks like Sarge was right about him being proud,” she muttered, watching as he stepped through the door.
There was no doubt in Leon’s mind. Jack Krauser was an asshole. He had a sadistic streak. He liked to push people and he would never apologize for doing it. All of that was still true.
But maybe you’d been right about more than just Krauser being proud of you all.
“Do you buy it?” Alenko asked, looking over at Leon. “That he didn’t know about Reed and Hellman?” He didn’t sound overly skeptical. Just like he wanted to be sure. That he needed that one last opinion that reinforced his own.
You had faith in the Major. Leon had criticized you for that, once.
Now he understood it better.
“He’s telling the truth,” Leon nodded, and he could have sworn he felt hell freeze over because he was defending Krauser of all people. “You saw how he reacted to . . .” to your injury. Leon had seen it up close and personal. The shock that mutated into rage. Rage enough to make Krauser nearly do something stupid.
“Yeah,” Alenko conceded, knowing well enough what Leon was referring to. They’d all seen the concern the Major had for you. The regret he’d hidden poorly as he answered the questions today. He had not meant you all to come to harm. Not like that.
Didn’t change the fact that you were still going to be hospitalized for who-knew-how-long.
“Never seen him worried like that,” Williams nodded, shaking her head.
“Never seen Sarge hurting like that either,” Alenko said, and tensed when he felt Valeria’s gaze turn on him. She was still feeling guilty, Leon could see it. Alenko could too, shutting his mouth when he realized he’d just reminded Valeria of what she’d inadvertently caused.
Because Reed and Hellman had asked about the two of you specifically. That’s what Valeria had said last night, and those words had Leon on edge. That’s what made him worry even now that there was danger, even now that they were all free of those cells.
You’d told him last night that you couldn’t risk him being there, and you hadn’t known how right you’d been.
The two of you had been obvious with your care for one another. So, even if she’d given up information about you two being close, Leon didn’t blame Valeria for what happened. Even if it was clear that she blamed herself.
Maybe that was why, after a moment, she reached for the radio that Krauser had left on the cot in front of her, and stood. “Come on then,” she said to the group, and her voice had more resolve in it than Leon had heard in a long while.
“Where are you-”
“We weren’t the ones that stole the radio, right? And Sarge is gonna get a lot more use out of it than we are.”
It was a day for looking past old angers, Leon found. He hadn’t liked Valeria much before the trip to Fort Benning. That had changed steadily while there. Now, though, as she marched off in an effort to try and alleviate your loneliness, whether to lessen her guilt or because she genuinely cared for you, Leon didn’t care. What mattered was the effort. It mattered that someone besides him cared enough to think of that before he could even voice it.
And Leon, for the first time in the last few days, smiled. He didn’t hesitate as he stood alongside her, following her as she moved towards the door. It didn’t take long before Williams and Alenko were following along, too.
⧫⧫⧫
As soon as you heard the knock on the door, you steeled yourself.
You weren’t sure how you were going to tell Leon. Distancing yourself had been the first instinct. You were good at that. It would be easy. Well, not easy, but doable. You’d done it once before, after all.
It had left you feeling like shit, and it hadn’t solved anything.
You’d both promised to talk about what you were feeling. It was a promise you regretted now that it made things more difficult, but you wanted to honor it. You owed him that much. So, you’d torn your mind apart all morning trying to put together the right words.
Krauser knows-
Reed and Hellman will be watching-
We can’t-
All of them seemed like bullshit, even if the concerns Krauser had raised were valid. Real. Just as the happiness that Leon Kennedy brought you was real, too. The most real thing you’d felt in months, besides that old and aching pain that you could never be rid of. Pain that was dulled and, sometimes, forgotten around the man you’d come to care for so much. The man you’d watched grow into a stronger person, inside and out. The man you would take a thousand hits for.
You couldn’t just let that go.
So when you heard that knock, you weren’t sure what the hell you were supposed to do because Leon wouldn’t want to end this. Not now. And neither did you.
The door opened and you found yourself speaking on instinct alone. “You shouldn’t be in here,” you repeated the words from the night before, not looking up from that spot on the floor you’d chosen as yours.
And then you regretted not looking up as soon as you heard a smoky but strained voice reply. “Nice to see you too.”
Your head snapped up and you pushed yourself up from bed, thanking the pain meds in your system for allowing the movement. Valeria didn’t wait to be invited in. Neither did any of the three people following her. Alenko and Williams gave you gentle, apologetic smiles as they followed the shorter woman in, and you felt your heart splinter because you’d thought to spend this day alone, like the last time. You thought you’d have to push Leon away the moment he stepped through the door, just for the sake of keeping up appearances.
Instead, you found yourself looking at your squad mates with wide eyes.
And when Leon did walk through the door, you felt that splintered heart break apart when he smiled at you.
“Hey,” he greeted, and you knew this conversation was going to hurt. Both of you.
But what conversation was it going to shape up to become?
You didn’t know, and, as you looked at the four visitors in front of you, you decided that maybe you didn’t want to know, either.
“Hey,” you said. “What are you all-”
“We got the day off,” Valeria answered. “Figured you could use the company.”
“If you wanted it,” Leon added, giving you an understanding look.
You’d been alone during your recovery from Finland. Krauser had checked in on you when he could, but he had a life and duties to attend to. The nurses that pitied you had made for shitty companions. Not that you’d wanted anyone, anyway. Solitude. That had been your companion and your shield. You’d thought just Leon had the ability to break down that barricade around you.
You’d been wrong.
It wasn’t quite a smile that you gave the group as you nodded, but it was close enough. “Okay.”
That surprise and that slight smile only grew as Valeria held out her arm and presented you with none other than the little radio you’d stolen from Cortez’s office. “Think you’re missing this, too.”
You weren’t sure what to think as you took the radio from her. Valeria seldom did anything without cause. What was her reasoning for this? For being, well, downright kind to you? You didn’t know, and, honestly? In that moment, when you had been so sure you’d been condemned to isolation in every possible way, you decided that you didn’t care, either.
So, you settled the radio between your hands, fighting back the new kind of pain in your chest. One not born of your cracked ribs or the fear that Krauser’s words had instilled in you.
This pain was sweeter. One you hadn’t felt in a long, long time.
“Thank you,” you murmured, looking from Valeria, to Leon, and then the rest.
Valeria just shrugged. “You’re no fun when you’re miserable. So pick a station and let’s fucking relax for once.”
You couldn’t really argue with that, so you flipped switches and dials until you heard a synth beat and vocals you hadn’t heard in so long. A song from another life.
“. . . there’s no turning back.”
“Even while we sleep . . .”
“Shit,” Alenko smiled wide as he took a seat a ways away from the bed you sat in. “I love this song!”
Williams just nodded, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning against the wall. “Least it’s not the Spice Girls,” she mumbled over her split lip before she looked over at the rest of you who, back in the Humvee, had made her sit through one of their songs. It seemed her opinion of them hadn’t improved. “Respectfully, they’re shit.” The near-apology was delivered with a near-smile to match.
“Well, Williams,” you found yourself saying, even if your words were muted by the ordeal you’d just been through. Still, there was something familiar there. Something you’d rediscovered at Fort Benning, and were glad to find at your fingertips now; humor. That was what ever-so-slightly colored your words as you told Williams, “ respectfully, go fuck yourself.”
An Army brat like you, Williams just smirked right back.
“Help me make the-”
“Most of freedom and of pleasure-”
“Nothing ever lasts forever . . .”
It made it easier, having them there. There weren’t many words, but there didn’t need to be. You all just listened to the song as it played, finding a comfortable state of quiet between each other. Valeria moved to lean against the wall by Williams’ side. Leon . . . you could tell he wanted to move closer to you. You wanted that too. You wanted it to be just the two of you, like in the hospital in Fort Benning, but Krauser’s warning hung over your head.
“There’s a room where the light won’t find you-”
“Holding hands as the walls come tumbling down-”
“When they do, I’ll be right behind you . . .”
Being alone with him was dangerous, more so now than it ever had been. That didn’t change simply because you wanted his presence or company. Your desire for him wouldn’t be pitied in a court martial. Not if Reed and Hellman were already looking at you like an infected limb that needed to be cut away.
You needed to heal, and Leon needed to finish this training. You both did. You’d just never thought it would be apart.
“So glad we almost made it . . .”
So . . . you would be alone with him one more time. At least for a while.
“So sad they had to fade it . . .”
You hoped he would understand that this was for the best, for now.
The song eventually finished and you looked up to meet his eyes. You’d learned to speak without words to each other, now. So many stolen glances and nights spent side by side, in training or with him pressed up against the wall of the mess hall, you had a language all your own. Insight into each other’s thoughts. And as you looked into those ocean blues, you saw your own thoughts reflected back at you.
There was a talk to be had, and both of you knew it.
⧫⧫⧫
The day went on and eventually the others left. Alenko was first, saying he was going to go in search of food. Had to be desperate, to want what the mess hall served, but Leon didn’t begrudge him. The hunger of those three days had left them all empty just as much as the rest of the experience had.
Williams went next, saying she needed to move, to make up for those days spent in captivity. Valeria didn’t take much convincing when asked to join her.
Leon almost told them to be careful. To not let the agents see them.
To not end up in the predicament that the two of you were in.
A situation that became clear and present, once the two of you were left alone, the radio playing on.
“How are you feeling?” He knew what the answer would be, but he asked anyway.
“They gave me pain meds,” you shrugged as best you could, “so not that bad right now.”
At least there was that. Even if you shouldn’t have had to be in the infirmary in the first place. “Have they told you how long you’ll be on bed rest?” Leon asked, because he didn’t want to have the other conversation. Not yet.
The mirth that had been present on your face, however muted, faded. “It was a six week recovery last time. For the bones.”
“Six?” The number sounded so much worse than what Leon had imagined. He remembered his own long recovery from the gunshot wound he’d suffered in Raccoon City. It had seemed long then, but he hadn’t been kept from anything. It hadn’t stopped him from living his life. Not that he’d done much living after that night anyway. Still, he couldn’t imagine what this was like to you, because it would be six weeks without physical training. Six weeks without sparring, without being able to clear your head in the way Leon knew you would need. Six weeks of what would be hell to you.
And if you couldn’t train for combat like the rest of them . . . would you be able to graduate with the rest? With him?
“You need to keep practicing,” you told him, and by the stiffness of your words, Leon could tell that you were thinking of exactly what he was thinking of. It sounded like you were telling him to go on without you. “Train with the others, but ask Krauser to spar too. He’s the best. He’ll kick your ass, but he’ll make you better.”
“You say that like you’re not gonna-”
“I’m not gonna be able to spar with you, Leon. Not for a while. I’m not gonna be there. You can’t let yourself fall behind with me.”
The words, while well intentioned, were painful to hear aloud. True, but painful because after months of training with you, he couldn’t imagine not being by your side. He didn’t want to have to train for hell on earth and not know that you would be there to face it with him.
But you were right.
As unfair as it was, as completely and utterly shitty, you were right.
“Okay,” he nodded. “But then when you’re better, we’ll catch you back up.” Because he knew you would need it. He knew you’d want it, too. That after so long letting your body heal, you would want nothing more than to throw yourself back into the swing of things.
The trouble was-
“Leon . . .” you shook your head, and he knew that the conversation he’d dreaded was here. “Krauser knows.”
Just like that, the color drained from his face. You’d never been one to beat around the bush, but those words were like being doused in ice water.
“About . . .”
“Us.”
He felt a pit open up in his stomach that threatened to turn him inside-out, and all he could do was sit on the bed beside you. The jaws were closing in. Had that been the cause of that look from Krauser earlier? Had the Major been looking at him with such disdain because of that?
“. . . Fuck.” It was really all he could say. Why even warn you about Reed and Hellman if the game was already over . . .
“He’s not going to report it.”
. . . or maybe not as over as Leon had thought.
“What?” he blinked, turning to look at you without bothering to hide his confusion. Major Krauser hadn’t exactly been by the books, as far as Leon knew, but he’d been so adamant about respecting the order of things. This whole mess had happened because he’d not wanted to step outside the bounds of red tape. Why the hell hadn’t he reported fraternization?
“Said he doesn’t care. But he also said that Reed and Hellman will.”
Leon nodded, trying to reconcile all the mismatched thoughts and solutions buzzing around his mind.
“So he’s saying he won’t stop us but if we get found out we’re fucked.”
You just nodded, the air growing heavier and heavier with each moment. Because Leon knew where this was going, just as much as you did.
Leon pursed his lips, looking down. “They asked about us during the interrogations,” he finally said. “Reed and Hellman. Valeria told me they were asking.”
It was your turn to frown, he could see it out of the corner of his eyes. He wouldn’t rat Valeria out, but you deserved to know that the agents were onto you, even if Krauser wouldn’t be the one to confirm it.
Why wouldn’t he confirm it?
“Then they’ll be watching.”
Leon nodded once, feeling emptiness beginning to set in. “So what do you want to do?” he asked, dreading the answer because he’d heard the distance in your voice last night, and he could hear it even then. He’d heard it once before, after you’d kissed him that first night and tried to convince yourself and him that it was a mistake.
The difference was that, then, he’d seen that emptiness in your eyes, too. He’d seen you retreating into yourself.
He knew you well enough now to know that the look that he saw in your eyes didn’t match the attempt at distance in your voice. Because, as you turned your gaze up towards him, Leon could see only conflict. Only you, a casualty of the crossfire between what your mind had to be telling you and what your heart wanted. When you answered, that conflict was all the more apparent. “You know what I want. But we have to be smart about this. Because if Krauser knows - and has for months now - then Reed and Hellman will pick up on it too, and they’re already gunning to cut me for this shit,” you gestured down to your ribs, and Leon swore he heard your voice waver.
“They wanted me out, too,” Leon admitted, and he watched some fear seep into your expression. “Krauser convinced them to let me stay.”
And again, Leon found himself wondering why?
“They wanted . . . why?” you asked. Why they’d wanted Leon gone - that’s what you were asking about.
“Because I broke,” he admitted, his voice hushed. Not ashamed, but overwhelmed by other emotions. “When they were hurting you, I had to get them to stop. So I was going to tell them what they wanted to know. Right before Krauser got there.”
You looked at him then, silent, your eyes piercing his own. Searching and seeing straight through him, just as you always had.
You had suffered on account of him. It was the last thing he ever wanted for you, but you’d endured it. You’d taken pain for him, in fights and behind bars, and you’d been taking pain from him for far longer. With your company, with your touch. You’d helped each other learn to walk again. It was what had made him fall in love with you, even if it had been something that happened to him at the end of your knife.
He loved you. So, he made a decision.
“Look,” he went on, turning to face you more, feeling something in him building. A resolve or a desperate hope, he wasn’t sure. “I’ll focus on training. I’ll work with Krauser, I’ll . . . I’ll only visit you with the others, if you think it’ll be less suspicious. But I’m not leaving you here by yourself. I’m not letting go of this. I can’t do that. Not if you don’t want to let go, either.”
He watched you, feeling emotion overtaking him. Bearing down on him, nearly making him shake because it had all been too much. Raccoon City. STRATCOM. All the hurts he’d suffered - that you’d suffered - and the best thing to come from it all had been this. You.
So, his throat constricting, he hoped that you felt the same way.
For a moment, he worried, because you were staring at him like he was something you could never have. He saw the regret in your eyes, the tension in your body, like you were bracing for some great pain. It all faded, though, and the corners of your mouth turned up just a bit. The dark of night graying as the sun tried to appear once more.
It was all the warning he had before your lips were on his, and Leon felt the resolve he’d built up for months, the guard he’d put around himself in that prison, crumble. Emotion and relief flooded him, and his hand shook a bit as he lifted it to your face. It was different from the kisses the two of you had stolen in the shadows. Different than the sweet one he’d given you in the hospital at Fort Benning. This was all longing. Wordless in its declaration. He held you gently, no longer needing to memorize the feel of you but trying to hold on to every detail anyway.
Because he didn’t know when he’d next get the chance to kiss you. Or hold you. Or be with you the way he wanted.
But he wasn’t letting go.
“I don’t want to let go, either,” you told him, your lips against his. “I don’t know when we’ll be able to-”
“Neither do I,” Leon admitted, as the words tore at him. “But . . . we’ll find a way.”
He had to believe that.
He had to believe that this wedge being driven between the two of you wouldn’t change what he felt. And to that end, he would watch. He would find moments of safety for the two of you, he would learn to play the spy game if it meant he could steal a few heartbeats with you. He’d wait for those moments, and he’d wait for you.
However long it took.

Okey Dokey
Pairing: Rose MacLean/Lee Moldaver, Lee Moldaver & Lucy MacLean Characters: Lee Moldaver, Rose MacLean, Lucy MacLean Tags: Soft, Fluff, Domestic Bliss, Shady Sands, Okey Dokey
The sound of small children shouting was enough to urge Rose and Lee to separate in a flash. “What are they doing down there?” Rose croaked, rubbing at the dark smudge of lipstick that stained the side of her throat, gently nudging on Lee’s shoulder until the older woman was pushing herself up on the faded couch cushions, fighting to get her feet on solid ground once Rose unhooked her ankle from around her legs.
“You just pushed a future U.S Army Soldier!” A young voice screeched, shrill and echoing from the courtyard where the Shady Sands school let out into.
“I’ll handle this-” Her back popped in protest as she shifted out of Rose’s grasp, pressing her lips into the crown of her head as she reached to grab her jacket from the back of the couch.
There was a circle of kids gathered in the courtyard, though it was the four-year-old with tears in her eyes in the center that had Moldaver parting the crowd with haste. Big brown eyes turned to her as fat tears ran down her pale face, hands reaching up for her almost immediately once she noticed that support had come quickly. The soft skin of her palms was torn up, blood welling up in the tiny scrapes that the pavement had left.
“They forgot the golden rule!” Lucy shouted, pointing accusatorily to the older kid who must have pushed her.
Inhaling slowly through her nose, Lee doubled over to take Lucy in her arms. “Okey Dokey,” She settled the girl on her hip, gently taking her scratched-up hands to bring them closer to her face to examine them. “You’re okay, bottlecap,”
Despite the scratches on her palms, Lucy’s small fingers wrapped around a strip of cloth close to her shoulder, tethering herself to the woman who was quickly replacing any memory of some guy named ‘Hank’ in her small mind. She giggled, a warm, wet thing as she wiped a snotty nose and salty tears against Lee’s jacket. “Oki-doki.” She echoed, lips upturning as her ailments were forgotten by the way the words sounded rolling off her tongue.
Even as Lee offered an impromptu lecture on this ‘Golden Rule’ that Rose had taught to Lucy, the girl seemed more entranced in whispering the phrase to herself quietly, giggling as she tried it in the many different intonations. “You okay, bottlecap?” Tangled hair was brushed back as the weight on her hip was resettled - Lucy hadn’t even realized that Moldaver had started walking her back to their Vault, high windows and planter boxes that hung from windows, twisted and barren flowers trying desperately to grow from the irradiated soil.
“Mhmm!” She’d agreed readily, tears dried and the confrontation long forgotten. “ ‘m ‘oki-doki!’” The girl exclaimed, beaming at Moldaver, even as a warm chuckle rumbled through her chest as they pushed through the front door.
“Our girl here got into a bit of a scuffle, I’m gonna go clean her up for dinner,” Her words were called in passing as she carried Lucy through the small home, Rose’s reply just barely reaching their ears as she slipped into the cozy bathroom to settle Lucy on the edge of the small changing table they’d crammed inside for Norm.
“Now, I have to clean your hands, alright? Be brave for me?” Lee moved swiftly about the bathroom, grabbing a mild antiseptic from the mirror, as well as clean yellow bandaids, the small cartoony designs preserved from a better time. They wouldn’t stick against her palms for long, especially not when Lucy was always more interested in getting her hands dirty, but it would hold up long enough for the skin to close around the deeper cuts.
“Okey-Dokey,” Lee hummed, smiling warmly to ward off any of the prickling anxiety that had Lucy twitching on the table. “It’s going to sting, deep breath in for me,” Lucy followed the instruction perfectly, even when the sting of disinfectant burned against her palms.
“So brave,” Lee praised not unkindly as bandages were peeled open and gently secured in place. Her lips were feather-light as she brushed them across the girls palms. “All better, but, I think a nice warm meal might help you feel even better,” Warm brown eyes flickered from the girl just in time for Rose to peer into the doorway, an infectious smile on her lips as her shoulder bumped into the frame.
“Well then I have perfect timing. Come on, my brave girls. Lets get you two some dinner,”
“Oki-Doki!”

under the weather
The day had started like any other. Elena, Maya, and Carina had enjoyed a leisurely breakfast together, sharing stories and laughter. They had plans for a picnic in the park, a simple but cherished activity that allowed them to relax and unwind.
As they prepared for their outing, Elena felt a slight chill. She brushed it off, assuming it was just a momentary discomfort. But as the day wore on, her condition worsened. Her head ached, her body felt heavy, and her temperature began to rise.
Despite feeling unwell, Elena was determined not to burden Maya and Carina. She didn't want to disrupt their plans or make them worry unnecessarily. So, she put on a brave face and soldiered on, all the while hiding her discomfort.
During the picnic, Elena's attempts to conceal her condition became increasingly difficult. She felt herself shivering, her cheeks flushed with fever. Maya and Carina noticed her occasional coughs and her pallor, but they attributed it to the changing weather.
As they spread out their picnic blanket beneath a sprawling oak tree, Maya couldn't help but express her concern. "Elena, are you sure you're feeling okay? You seem a little off today."
Elena forced a smile, trying to mask her discomfort. "I'm perfectly fine, Maya. Just a bit tired, that's all."
Carina noticed Elena's trembling hands as she tried to pour tea from the thermos. Her voice was filled with genuine worry. "Elena, you're shaking. Are you sure you're alright? Is it your blood sugar?" She didn’t wait for a reply and quickly logged into the app on her phone but relaxed as she saw Elena’s blood sugar was within range.
Elena's patience was wearing thin, and her feverish frustration showed as she replied, "I told you, I'm fine. Can you please stop fussing over me?"
Maya and Carina exchanged glances, concern etched on their faces. They couldn't help but feel that something was amiss. Elena's behavior was unusual, and she seemed distant, almost as if she was pushing them away.
As the picnic continued, Elena's condition deteriorated further. Her fever spiked, making her feel increasingly irritable. Maya and Carina couldn't ignore the growing emotional distance between them and Elena, and it frustrated them.
In the late afternoon, as they packed up their picnic, Carina decided it was time to address the elephant in the room. She approached Elena gently, her voice filled with a mix of worry and confusion. "Elena, something isn't right. You're not being yourself today. Have we done something to upset you?"
Elena, her feverish mind clouded with exhaustion, lashed out in frustration. "No, it's not you. I'm just tired, okay? Can we please drop it?"
Maya, sensing the tension, stepped in. "Elena, we love you, and we're here to support you. But you can't push us away like this."
Elena, on the verge of tears, finally relented. "I'm sorry, it's just... I'm not feeling well. I didn't want to ruin our day."
Maya and Carina exchanged understanding glances. It wasn't that Elena was distancing herself from the relationship; she had been hiding her illness to avoid burdening them once again. Their worry shifted from frustration to genuine concern for Elena's well-being.
Carina reached out and placed a hand on Elena's forehead, confirming her fever. "Elena, we want you to be healthy and happy. Let us take care of you."
Maya added, "How about once we get home, Carina will make some soup and we can put on sweats and watch a movie?”
“You can just drop me home. I don’t want to get you guys sick if this is contagious.”
“Nonsense. We deal with sick people every day. And I wouldn’t feel okay leaving you alone in this state, amore.”
“Thank you,” Elena whispered caving in and finally allowing herself to be cared for by Maya and Carina. As they helped her into the car and drove her home, she couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for their unwavering love and concern. It was a reminder that their relationship was built on trust, support, and the willingness to face challenges together, no matter how daunting they may be.
Maya and Carina fussed over Elena as soon as they arrived home. They tucked her into bed, brought her warm soup, and made sure she had everything she needed. As they sat by her bedside, Maya couldn't help but express her concern when Elena kept coughing and her nose running. "Elena, I think you might have the flu. You should have gotten the vaccine this year."
Elena hesitated, her feverish mind conflicted. "I...I didn't get the flu shot this year."
Carina, who had been checking Elena's temperature, looked up with concern. "Why not, Elena? It's important for your health."
Elena knew she couldn't hide the truth any longer. She had been avoiding the flu shot because of her fear of needles. She sighed, her voice filled with vulnerability. "I'm scared of needles, okay? I know it's important, but I couldn't bring myself to do it."
Maya and Carina exchanged understanding glances. They knew Elena's fear of needles was a deeply ingrained issue, one that had caused her distress for years. Carina spoke softly, "Elena, we understand your fear, but your health is too important to neglect."
Maya added, "We can find ways to help you cope with your fear, but we need to make sure you're protected, especially with your work at the hospital." She knew they were right, and she couldn't continue to put her health at risk due to her fear.
“Are you up to date with all your other vaccines?” Carina questioned when she realized just how bad this could get if Elena didn’t stay compliant with the vaccine recommendations.
“Um… about that…”
“Elena, are you serious?” Maya sternly questions her making the woman retreat against the backboard of the bed, Maya’s tone catching her off guard. “I’m sorry… I’m… I’m just worried for you and you’re a diabetic so you’re in a high-risk category.”
“I know, okay. I’ll figure it out later.”
“We’ll help you figure it out, amore.” Carina grabs her hand and places a gentle kiss before bringing her into her chest to lay against. “You’ve got a pretty high fever so I am going to have Maya grab some fever-reducers and sugar-free Gatorade while we stay here. Do you want anything else?”
“Ice pops. Any flavor.”
“You got it.” Maya winks before placing a kiss on the ill woman’s forehead and making her way out of the room. But came back three minutes later, a question running in her mind, “Elena. Do you want… Oh, she’s asleep already.” Maya looks at Carina with loving eyes watching her be as still as possible so as to not disturb Elena.
“Make sure anything you get is sugar-free, bambina. I love you. Be safe. We’ll be waiting for you.” Carina whispers before Maya comes in and places a kiss on her wife’s lips before leaving.

Soap, a sergeant, oh god, that man loved you too much, he just wanted to protect you, at first it was sweet but then it was annoying, you didn't become a soldier to never receive some hits, you wanted more action, you wanted more adrenaline and danger, you needed to improve your skills, be stronger, be at your limit but he was always there taking care of you, protecting you as if you were a porcelain doll, by extension, the rest of the team started to keep an eye on you, everything just became worse, you ended your relationship and still there were they, always protecting you.
- Oh! Come on Bunny, I just tried to protect you, you could die out there!
- Soap! I don't need protection! My Job is the same as yours! How do you expect me to be better if you keep putting me inside a bubble?
- listen... I love you, I don't want to think about losing you for a fucking bullet or a fucking knife or something worse!
- You can't protect me all the time Soap, I'm not fragile, I'm not a fucking deer or a fucking bunny! I'm tired of that nickname btw! I want to know how far I can go...
- How far you can go? Listen to yourself! This is not a fucking game, you're here to make the world better not to prove how strong or brave you are!
- it's not what I meant to say! Just... I can't do this anymore, I can't!
-...what? What are you talking about?
- It's over! All of this! This job, this team, this place, this fucking relationship! I love you Johnny but you're killing me in more than one way, I'm sorry, but I can't do it, I will not continue with this situation.
He just looked into your tired eyes, he didn't try to stop you, he knew he ruined your relationship, he lost you but not in the way he was constantly expecting.
After some months you decided you had enough, you left, disappeared without saying goodbye or giving a good reason, you thought you would never see them again or at least not in a long time.
Finally you had the job you always wanted, good payment, mates who let you do your job, you were feral and lethal, now, you were no longer a scared deer or a small rabbit, you were a wild predator, always ready to attack.
You were in a new relationship too, your colonel, König. He saw all your potential from the beginning, pushed you to your limit and taught you all he knew, he loved you, he respected you and was always helping and supporting you to be the better version of yourself, you fell hard for him.
You're his and he's yours, and he can't be more happy, proud and grateful because honestly, You're not only a wonderful girlfriend, you're a magnificent soldier and a very good addition to KorTac.
This new you, this new life, everything fit perfectly, until... destiny decided to play with you.
The small meeting was quick, there wasn't much to say, just details of the mission, still, könig looked very serious.
- This mission sounds easy and simple but it's important, we can't mess it up, okay? So Horangi and Wolfsbane, together. You will go for our informant, we need him alive.
You and Horangi smiled at each other, you were good friends and worked well together.
-Yes sir.
- understand.
- The rest of us, we'll clean the area, simple but still... We don't have chances for mistakes, understand?
There wasn't silence, everybody replied with a simple « Yes sir ».
- Any questions?
You saw the map with the location of the hostage, it looked familiar but you weren't sure, your curiosity talked for you.
- Sir, are we going to confront somebody else? This location is very isolated but maybe there will be more people trying to take the hostage too.
- No, we shouldn't have any problem, unless the informant tried to put any resistance or put us in the eye of the hurricane and someone appears, In that case, kill everybody who tries to stop you. NO MERCY, NO MISTAKES. Do y'all understand?
- YES SIR!!!
You were feeling something was out of place, an unusual vibe In the air, you didn't know what it was, you only felt something was wrong. Horangi noticed it, he knows you were not focused this time.
- Hey, you good?
- Uh? Oh... Yes, sorry I was just thinking if I already have all I will need. Let's go buddy, let's do this!.
You tried to sound calm and ready but you weren't, your senses were playing with you.
You look at König who was also very quiet and you could see how his mind is full of thoughts, you know him, he was elaborating more than one plan, just in case.
He finally feels your eyes on him, he walks in your direction and his big hand takes yours.
- Are you alright, Meine Liebe?
You nod, and fix something on his mask, while he puts on your own mask, he's still looking at you, you both know there's an unknown elephant filling the room.
- Schätz, I know you very well, I know there's something on your mind, I will not force you to tell me, I just want you to know that everything will be fine, I trust all of you, we will be fine.
You look at him one more time, you can't see his face but you're sure he's smiling at you, even with the mask you already know every expression, and without noticing you're smiling at him too, then, he kissed your hand In response. Both walked to the trucks and joined with the rest of the team.
The trip to the location was quick, the small conversation with the team helped you to relax, before you and Horangi separated from them, König let you know how much he loved you and asked you to take care, he wanted his team back to the base in one piece.
You and Horangi waited for König's approval to get inside to capture the objective, once there, the game started, König's voice sounded on your ear, letting you and all the team know that you're not alone.
- We have company! Some soldiers are here, secure our hostage, kill everybody who tries to take him!
All the team replied with a simple:
- copy!
You and Horangi were planning how to protect the hostage and yourself, which routes follow to arrive at the rendezvous point, until a window broke and the next thing you saw was a man jumping on Horangi, you took the hostage and without thinking you put the gun on his head, you knew this would turn into a negotiation or a race to see who dies first, your partner or your hostage, everything got blurry for a second when your enemy's face became to a familiar one.
- Let that man go now or I will kill your partner! All depends on you buddy!
You smiled under your mask, this man who you thought you would never see again is in front of you trying to put your nerves on charge of your next movements.
- I will not do such a thing... Sergeant.
You saw it in his eyes, he recognized your voice and still he couldn't believe it, this was your chance to take advantage.
- Bunny?... Is that you? What the hell are you... No, you're not with these people, tell me you're not...
You took off your mask, you wanted to show the new you, you had him out of balance, you saw how his mind was doing a mess with him.
- I'm no longer a Bunny, my new friends call me Wolfsbane, now let my partner go and I will not kill this not so innocent man.
You looked at Horangi who already knew what you were doing, he was ready to attack as soon as you gave him any sign.
Soap was out of his mind, his precious little bunny was now looking at him with uninterested eyes, cold and distant, his thoughts were distracting him of his mission, you were ready to give the sign to Horangi when Soap's radio spoke.
- Soap, where are you? let's go, they're more than we estimated, bring the hostage now!
Both were ready to speak when yours made a sound too. König needed your report.
- Horangi, Wolfsbane, report me, where are you? We will go to help...
- A little difficulties but all good sir, we can handle it, the hostage is still safe.
You interrupt your colonel, you didn't allow him to come to your rescue, you were sure you could handle it.
- Don't take too long guys, we have to leave soon.
- Copy.
You turned off your radio, looked at both and pressed your gun harder on your hostage head.
- You heard your captain, soap, we're too much for you to handle, and you heard mine, we don't have time to play, so... Let's make this simpler, I'll let this man go and you will let my partner go too, I already have the information I need, this piece of shit is not important for my boss anymore. What do u think? It's a good deal...
- look at you, you're a very different person... Who are you now? I barely recognize you...
- I'm not here to talk, I'm here for business! I'm giving you the chance to do this in the easy way, answer now or I shoot you and him.
Your cold attitude was Killing him, he wasn't thinking clearly, before he could even say a word u gave Horangi a quick sign, then Soap was on the floor.
The two of you and the hostage were running out of the room when soap took you by the leg, you put resistance instantly, fighting against your once lover. Horangi stopped on his tracks ready to help, his gun ready to end with Soap but something inside you reacted and before your brain could stop your mouth, you yelled at Horangi.
- Go, take the hostage now! I'll distract him, Go!
Horangi doubted for a second but nodded and while he was leaving he asked you not to take much time or he would be a dead man.
You give a wonderful fight, soap was very distracted by his own mind, your radio turned on once again and your Colonel's angry voice was filling the room.
- Wolfsbane, report! Where are you?...
No response from you, you're too busy to speak.
- meine Königin... where are you? I'll go to look for you.
You had a knife ready to cut Soap's throat, and yet... You couldn't do it, you knew you needed to do it and you couldn't. You threw your knife away and hit him repeatedly, he wasn't fighting you anymore, he was too heartbroken to fight you, you never saw him like that but it wasn't time to be weak.
- I'm on my way to join Horangi Sir, I already finished here, the hostage is safe.
- copy, I want all of you here NOW. Let's go home, meine liebling.
Before you answered to König, you looked one more time to Soap, he was on his knees you saw on his eyes how he was still putting the puzzle pieces together.
You took his face on your hands and kissed his forehead, before he could say something you put your mask on again and spoke first.
- This could be different Soap, but now, this is the way I choose, I will not have mercy next time I see you.
You took your radio and said with a soft and sweet voice:
- yes, mission successful, let's go home my love...
The last memory of Soap was your boot on his face, and the shadow of your body shape running away.

the way it took less episodes for tng to begin to humanize the borg the most inhuman trek villains who were actively built up as literally like faceless drones there wasnt much of an ethical implication about killing but literally their second appearance in best of both worlds already trying to imagine what it would be like to be a borg drone from picards perspective and next they show up in i borg where its like ok we take the normal star trek approach of seeing every living being as worthwhile and not inherently monstrous and so on that was fewer episodes than what theyre doing with the gorn its like crazy
Even just from a style perspective, the borg spent a few episodes like ‘oh no, scary!’ And then bc that would have been boring to just keep doing, they started to do eps like ‘what if we captured a borg, could we ethically send it back with a disease to kill all of them’ or even just some pure drama of ‘what if captain picard…. BECAME a borg???’ And then an episode following up on the guilt of that. And even then, I was surprised how few tng episodes were about the borg. Snw is hamstrung by having half the eps in a season, but instead of really packing new stuff in, they keep wasting time on ‘what if we had cool guns to kill gorn monsters with’. Which while fun or silly in its own self-aware genre, feels really out of place and boring in Star Trek.
I think it also is just an incoherent view of the gorn as a species. They’re instinct-driven violent predators with no intelligence; but they’re also smart enough to build ships and space suits? They’re cannibalistic, but they’re also able to work together to command ships. They’re animals who are just trying to eat; but actually they’re intelligent enough to be ‘pure evil’. It’s whatever is convenient in the moment to justify unexamined thrill in murdering them.
If they were animals with instinctive behavior, then I think the Star Trek precedent would be: let’s defend ourselves and get the fuck out of here, but also these are just animals trying to survive and reproduce (ie: picard wouldn’t develop a bloodthirsty vengeful hatred against all bears if a bear killed a crew member). There is no ethical behavior behind animals eating and surviving. A wasp is kind of gross when it reproduces by injecting its eggs into another insect, but it’s not ‘evil’.
But that would mean the gorn wouldn’t be intelligent enough to have spaceships, which creates the convenient problem that our brave heroes HAVE to keep killing them without debate bc the gorn are able to pursue them! So somehow the gorn are smart enough to build spaceships capable of pursuing starfleet ships. They are smart enough for their actions to be considered ‘evil’. But not smart enough to be considered a race with a culture or intellect.
I’ve already talked about how the ep where they say the gorn block telepathy, meaning spock can’t talk to them, is a deliberate way of writing off diplomacy as a possibility. Those nasty gorn are just so mean and violent (and capable enough) that they block telepathy! It’s their fault! Which prevents a devil in the dark Horta solution, and allows the show to shrug and keep using guns as a solution.
I say all of this crap not because I really care about the integrity of the gorn. Who cares, it’s a fun alien. But in a franchise that wants to claim political awareness and goodness, its unsettling to dissect repeated writing choices over and over again (not just about the gorn) that support classic conservative and jingoistic talking points. “The enemy isn’t human or even intelligent, it’s an animal operating on base instincts; except when it’s so smart it can outwit our brave soldiers. And when you kill them, you can ENJOY killing them, because it’s one more dead enemy.”
The borg, changelings, jem hedar, Klingons, romulans— they were handled, some more than others, in ways that should invite criticism and skepticism about the intentions of the show. But they were humanized and explored further than ‘excuse to hand everyone an assault rifle and swat armor.’ A new show would ideally be improving or challenging past shows’ failures or missteps, not taking a huge step back. The gorn problem is even more glaring because it’s a sharp and bleak turn from the themes of trek shows that precede SNW, and from the actual episode the gorn come from.

Alright I've seen this take plenty of times now and I feel like some of y'all are honestly kinda straight up loco.
Suletta Mercury is not and never has been anything even resembling to brainwashed at any point in this series. I repeat, Suletta is NOT brainwashed. She never has been and seeing so many of you all projecting your own woefully unnuanced moral compasses upon the characters in this show is honestly painful to watch.
If you bothered to read Cradle Planet, the short story related to G:WfM, one of the main things that would become clear to you is that Suletta was raised in isolation. Specifically she was isolated from other kids her age.
This wasn't done on purpose by Prospera to raise her to be the perfect little pawn for her plans y'all, thats so fucking stupid. At this point its clear that while Prospera likely favours Aerial when it comes to securing a future for one of her children, she has never shown at any point that she saw Suletta as something to be disposed of in the sense of killing her. Her belief in the ideals of the Vanadís Institute and her hatred for the misuse of the GUND-format, along with her love for Eri would make it thematically utter fucking madness for her not to love or be fond of Suletta.
The short story and Eri talking about the past in the anime shows that Prospera treated Suletta the best she could, along with Suletta being familiar with various forms of media that likely show the importance of love and kindness, such as reading/watching about highschool and stuff from Earth Sphere media such as mentioned in the short story.
How Suletta behaves at the school and how comfortable she is to interact and look for her mother for comfort shows that Prospera did not hurt Suletta for being vulnerable with her and that she supported her daughter when she was young. Aerial mentions that Suletta at 6 years old only came to her for comfort when she was scared if Prospera was busy with work, implying that Prospera was otherwise most of the time present when Suletta was young.
The reason why Suletta is so shy and uncertain as she was is because of the people on Mercury. The people who lived there did not trust Prospera and by extension Suletta. They were seen as potential liabilities. Aerial recounts that they wanted Prospera and Suletta to be send away. Children are extremely observant and absorb this kind of bullshit, so at a young age Suletta basically internalised the message that she's unwanted and a burden. THIS the the major trauma that makes Suletta as socially incompetent as she is.
Aerial mentions how Suletta's infamous catchphrase about gaining 2 if moving forward was a response to trying to make Suletta be brave about getting a shot. In other words TOTALLY FUCKING NORMAL MOM BEHAVIOUR. Prospera explained that while Suletta could gain 1 by not getting a shot and avoiding pain, but that by getting the shot she could gain 2 by not becoming sick in the future and to be seen as amazing by the people on Mercury.
This is Prospera, explaining to her young daughter, that sometimes you need to be a little brave in order to succeed in your goals or to live a happy and healthy life. You need to do something you might be afraid of or be a little uncomfortable with in order to gain somethings benefits. Thats not fucking evil and if you think that teaching a scared child to be brave to prepare for future is evil manipulation then I fear for your mental faculties.
Suletta internalized this phrase, using it as a source of comfort. Whenever she's scared or afraid but knows that something needs to be done. Its NOT a fucking trigger phrase ala Winter Soldier, thanks.
When Prospera justified the deaths of those terrorists, she was speaking from the perspective of a survivor. Literally all her collegues, friends and even her husband perished in the attack from Dominicus under the command of Cathedra. At our most basic, humans simply wish to survive and if you have to kill others to do so then so be it.
Suletta's "strange" behaviour after that isn't her being brainwashed, its her being in a stressful situation and compartimentalizing on the fly. Millions of people behave strangely or as if nothing is wrong in high stress situations because they're literally working on default. There is no time to think about ethics or morality when you or someone who you love is under attack, there is only panic and making split second decisions that you can only pray you will not regret in the future.
Thats also not to say that Suletta doesn't know or wasn't raised in a way that held life in high esteem. On Mercury she was the primary person responsible for emergency rescue operations with the Aerial, piloting and controlling the Aerial herself in order to save people, who often were rude and mean and were likely unkind to her in childhood. You think she'd do that if she didn't think human life was worth something? Or be as kind and friendly as she is?
Suletta is a kind, hopeful young girl with humble if ambitious plans for the future, who does not wish pain or loneliness upon other people. She isn't an "I suffered so why shouldn't you?" person, she's an "I suffered and I don't want you to suffer too" person.
Suletta was raised to be kind, to be honest, to survive and to do her best. She's not brainwashed she's doing her best. She's not evil she's doing her best. She laughs and cries and is anxious and happy. She's a gentle person who pushes on to do her best anyway, even if she's scared.
So get off of y'alls high horses and "Suletta is brainwashed/is gonna snap and kill a bunch of people" bullshit. Prospera didn't raise a weapon, she raised a daughter and capable Pilot who can survive on her own even once she no longer needed her to raise Aerial's Permet score. She raised a gentle girl who did her best.
Suletta deserves better and I can only hope that Earth House continues to support her. Y'all need to have more faith in her as the heroic gundam protagonist she is, she's not a shonen hero who takes no lives personally ever.
Suletta is capable and strong and you all better remember it.

None of us are free until all of us are free
So I’ve recently remembered that I have a linktree which I haven’t actually used since like 2020/2021, so perfect place to share some of my saved links to support Palestine right? I suppose you can imagine my surprise when I already find a “FREE PALESTINE” header, one I don’t remember adding as a teen in the throes of lockdown and high school, right at the bottom.
I won’t try and pretend like I do remember adding any such thing, or sharing calls for donations for drinking water for Gaza, or for a hospital in East Jerusalem. I won’t act as if I had done the right thing and educated myself, because if I had back then, maybe I might’ve gotten involved in the criticism of Zionism and Israel whole lot sooner into the influx of atrocities and war crimes they’ve committed in “retaliation”. And maybe I would’ve understood just how much control the Israeli have had over the Palestinians sooner, for why would they have needed funds for suitable drinking water in early 2021? And maybe I would’ve known why I was sharing a call for aid for Al Makassed Hospital, which was raided by IOF soldiers dressed as women who sound bombed the area, killing 150 and injuring 600 Palestinians mid-2021. And maybe I would’ve known of Al Quds Open University, of which the hospital was associated with, and was bombed in November last year.
And sure, I could go on, but I won’t. Because the babies burned and decapitated and dismembered in the bombings in UNICEF’s camps in Rafah, the “designated safe zone”, and in their homeland wouldn’t have been alive then, let alone grow to learn from their elders who would have lived through it. Little Hind Rajab, who would’ve been alive then but too young to truly recall, won’t care, because she was murdered alone with her already dead relatives and two brave men who were meant to be allowed to save her. The innocent bodies marred by this so called “war”, the bleak eyes cursed by death, the broken bodies and immovable spirits of displaced persons seeking safety from the greed of the world - they won’t be thinking of matters of the past.
I genuinely don’t know what to think anymore. My heart aches for the Palestinians, as it does for the Congolese and the Sudanese and the Uyghurs and all victims of the manifestations of the greed of humanity. All I can wish for is for humanity to open their eyes, their hearts, to properly watch our world burn and feel the same aches as I do, as so little yet so many do. To take those aches and build the world anew, not from rubble, but from the foundations of our collective morals and drive against injustice and for a sustainable future.
And maybe I’ve written too much and no one will truly read this all, especially since I haven’t entirely censored myself here. But I refuse to put the effort in to make a tldr because I want people to read this all, I want to see just how far my voice can and will go.
The Operation Olive Branch spreadsheet is at the top of my linktree, right under the ‘FREE PALESTINE’ header that started these thoughts. If you’d like to look at the links I mentioned, I’ve kept them as the bottom three, I overall encourage you to research into them if you have the mental capacity to, or to at least keep up to date with the world today. I most likely won’t be updating that linktree again, so please seek other accounts and people who have more resources and material to keep educated.
As always, none of us are free until all of us are free. Choose the right side of history, make a stand against injustice.

Patriotism and the banality of evil
A child writing a letter of support to her local Black Legion warband with a blood candy bar attached. The letter thanks the brave Space Marines for their service and has a crude drawing of the eight point Eye of Horus.
Sometimes a child attaches a piece of jerky or a shelf-stable curry pouch instead.
A Beastman village baking flatbreads for a traitor guard regiment about to embark on a Black Crusade and be atrociously evil. Each flatbread has the hoofprints of the breadmaker on it.
A school in Black Legion territory having an assembly celebrating "our brave freedom fighters", complete with flag waving.
Schools in the Eye of Terror teach galactic history framing the Black Legion as liberators and freedom fighters, both from the Imperium and other legions.
Chaos cultists descended from populations expelled by the Imperium during the Great Scouring telling their kids how "we suffered", to keep the flame of Vindicta alive.
Adoring fans of the Black Legion swooning as Space Marines hand out flowers during a military parade.
Black Legion-aligned chefs making a gigantic plate of hummus with the Black Legion emblem on it (made of toppings such as herbs and olives). The chefs insist it is noble and heroic as opposed the barbaric hummuses of the enemies of the Black Legion that contain corpse starch or will give you food poisoning.
Two traitor guardsmen take a picture in front of a lucky windchime, pledging on the strength of their love as they head into battle. The photo has a glow and sparkle filter and text overlayed on it with the corniest text effect possible.
The same couple posing on top of a body of corpses of their enemies. It's okay, they were scumbags who hated all that's good.
Chaos cultist growing up idolizing her warband leader, urging him to divorce his Imperial Fist wife after they go on a rampage and killed a bunch of civilians trying to run away from their abusive husband. Somebody's jealous.
Chaos cultists hearing about bad things the Black Legion did and it only makes them more patriotic, to the point they mock the victims.
Chaos cultist children collecting Black Legion GI Joes and trading cards depicting notable commanders and scientists.
Towns putting up gigantic "Welcome Home Space Marines" and "welcome home brave soldiers" billboards when their kids come to visit. There will be a gigantic welcome home party!
Traitor guardsmen visiting children at the hospital. The children hope the guardsmen have a good war and kill lots of people.
Black Legion Wounded Warriors program funded by civilians helping guardsmen with lifechanging injuries. Each year the program gets a flood of donations.

Warnings: None
Copyright: I do not own any Marvel characters or locations. However, I do own my OC Elizabeth Lightwood. I do not condone any copying of this.
TWO YEARS LATER
"This is the Asgardian refugee vessel Statesman. We are under assault. I repeat, we are under assault. The engines are dead, life support failing. Requesting aid from any vessel within range. We are twenty-two jump points out of Asgard. Our crew is made up of Asgardian families. We have very few soldiers here. This is not a warcraft. I repeat, this is not a warcraft."
Elizabeth didn't know what to do. She was hiding her children behind her, while also trying to hold one of them at the same time.
Halfdan and Astrid were behind her, only eight years old. They both looked so much like their father, though Astrid had straight black hair unlike Halfdan's curly hair. They both even had his blue eyes and Halfdan had the point to his chin and Astrid had his smile.
They were holding the two of the two-year-olds: Tove who was female and also had Loki's blue eyes though Elizabeth's brown hair and Hogun who she had named after her best friend on Asgard and had been Tove, Hogun, and Sages' god-father. And now, he was dead.
The entire ship was on fire and she was crouched down. She had tears in her eyes, looking across the ship to see the brave fighter, Heimdall, laying down on the wreck in pain, bleeding.
"Hear me and rejoice." A new voice said, a voice that belonged to one of the invaders. He walked past Heimdall and Elizabeth clutched Sage harder in her arms, the little two year old girl, her eyes wide open, but she didn't cry. "You have had the privilege of being saved by the Great Titan."
Elizabeth often had trouble holding her tongue, especially when she was passionate about something or someone she loved. But she bit down hard, tasting blood, because now as not the time to get sassy.
"You may think this is suffering. No. It is salvation. Universal scales tip toward balance because of your sacrifice."
There were more of the alien creatures, walking around, over dead bodies. She kept a hand on her sword and she knew her children were behind her, with knives in their hands. They would fight, but they would all die. And she didn't know how to protect them.
Loki was standing in the front, with Thanos in front of him. He was the only one standing, in fact, his back to her.
"For even in death, you have become children of Thanos."
Thanos was standing over Thor now, who was unconscious on the floor. "I know what it's like to lose." He addressed Loki, as the others moved around, stabbing the Asgardians that were still breathing on the floor. Elizabeth tightened her invisibility spell as much as she could like Loki had taught her, but she wouldn't be able to hold it much longer, not for six people, even if five of them were children.
"To feel so desperately that you're right, yet to fail, nonetheless." He bent down, picking up Thor with one hand. Thor choked and moaned in his grasp. Elizabeth could hear Astrid crying quietly. "It's frightening. Turns the legs to jelly. But I ask you, to what end? Dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same."
They were pointing a weapon at Loki's head now, all of them surrounding Elizabeth's husband and soulmate. She had to throw an arm out to stop Halfdan from rushing them with his knife, though she wanted to do the same.
"And now, it's here. Or should I say, I am." Elizabeth saw the purple gem that was already in his gauntlet. The first of six infinity stones for him to have.
"You talk to much." Thor grumbled, blood pouring out of his mouth. He'd lost an eye in their fight with Hela, they had lost so much in the fight with Hela. And now, they were losing everything. All of the people. Soon, the Asgardian population might be wiped out of existence completely.
"The Tesseract. Or your brothers and wifes' heads." Thanos said. Elizabeth's breath hitched when Thanos pointed at where Elizabeth was hiding the rest of her family. "I assume you have a preference."
"Oh, I do." Loki said. "Kill away."
Thanos pressed the gem to Thor's head and one of the lackeys immediately approached Elizabeth's corner. She wasn't sure if it was a lucky guess or if her shields were down, but she decided to act.
Thrusting Sage into Astrids' arms, she dropped the spell completely, lunging at the monster in front of her. The two of them immediately started combat, their swords clashing against one another. She was strong, far stronger than anyone Elizabeth had ever fought before, even T'Challa in his vibranium suit or Tony in his titanium one.
"ALL RIGHT, STOP!" Loki shouted.
"We don't have the Tesseract." Elizabeth could just barely hear Thor say as Thanos stopped what he was doing to him over the clashing of their swords. But she couldn't stop her fight with the woman in front of her- if you could even call her a woman. "It was destroyed on Asgard." There was a pause and then, "You really are the worst brother."
"I assure you, brother. . . the sun will shine on us again."
Elizabeth pushed away from the woman, retreating a few steps to come to Loki's side, holding a hand out at her kids so they would stay put.
"Your optimism is misplaced, Asgardian."
Loki immediately retracted the glowing cube in his hand, "Well, for one thing, I'm not Asgardian. And for another. . . we have a Hulk."
Loki tackled Thor out of the way and Elizabeth shielded her kids as Hulk came through, bashing Thanos over and over. Loki came to her immediately, wasting no time in pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss.
"I love you." Loki whispered. "Forever."
"I love you forever." Elizabeth choked out, kissing him again.
Hulk was defeated far to easily for Elizabeth's liking. Thor attacked him when Hulk was down and was immediately captured in metal by the Squidward looking dude.
Elizabeth glanced over and Heimdall met her eyes. He nodded slightly to Hulk and she understood immediately.
"Get to Hulk." She whispered to her children and they went quietly, making their way to the Hulks' side.
"Allfathers." She heard Heimdall start to say. "let the dark magic flow through me one last time."
Elizabeth couldn't look at Heimdall as he started to activate the Bifrost. She met Thor's eye and knew he understood. But Loki was gone, scheming she was sure. She let out a pained cry, wanting to see him one last time. The rainbow light started to envelope her, "LOKI I LOVE YOU." She screamed as loudly as she could, before she was gone.
🎃 :::::  🧡  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━  🧡  ::::: 🎃
"NO!" Loki heard Thor scream as Heimdall was killed. Loki breathed in, almost shakily. At least his wife and children were safe. And they would be able to alert Midgard of the doom coming to them. His wife and children were safe. That was all that mattered. "You're going to die for that."
Ebony Maw lazily swiped his hand so that the metal clamped over his brothers mouth. He lifted a finger to his mouth, "Shh."
"My humble personage." Ebony presented the Tesseract to him. He knelt, "bows before your grandeur." Loki watched as Thanos took off his armor. "No other being has ever had the might nay, the nobility to wield not one, but two Infinity Stones." Thanos plucked the glowing cube from Ebony Maw's hand.
"The universe lies within your grasp."
He crushed the cube in hand, blowing on it gently like it was hot, before lifting the blue stone between his fingers, glass tinkling to the ground. He placed it beside the purple one, a blast of blue energy going through the ship.
"There are two more stones on Earth. Find them, my children, and bring them to me on Titan."
"Father, we will not fail you." The womanly one said, as all of them bowed.
"If I might interject." Loki said quickly. "If you're going to Earth, you might want a guide. I do have a bit of experience in that area." He said with a smile, hoping this was all going to work. He was the master of lies and manipulation, but he had never done them on a Titan as powerful as this one. Nay, a Titan as powerful as this one that had controlled him.
"If you consider failure experience." Thanos said slowly.
"I consider experience, experience." Loki retorted. "Almighty Thanos, I, Loki, Prince of Asgard. . . Odinson. . ." He looked over at Thor, hoping he knew what he was doing, "the rightful kind of Jotunheim, god of mischief," He let the dagger form in his hand behind his back, "do hereby pledge to you, my undying fidelity."
He knelt, as though bowing, before thrusting upwards, his knife aimed for the throat. But blue energy stopped him, just inches away. Thanos didn't even look fazed.
"Undying?" Thanos questioned as he grabbed Loki's wrist, the blue fading as he lowered the stone, "You should choose your words more carefully." He twisted Loki's wrist so that he had to drop the weapon, before lifting him up by his throat.
It was a different sort of pain from dying before. Or coming close to death anyways. The air was gone completely from his lungs and he could already feel a sort of pressure against his forehead. And on top of that, he could suddenly feel Elizabeth's screaming pain through their bond. That she knew he was dying. And it was hurting her.
"You. . ." He choked out, kicking his legs a little. He struggled to get free, but he could not. "Will never be. . . a God."
And then Thanos snapped his neck.

"Seriously, you don't have any money?" Stephen asked, dressing in a T-shirt and jeans as he and Sam walked down one side of the grand staircase, hand in hand. He was talking to Wong, a fellow sorcerer, as he walked down on the other side.
"Attachment to the material is detachment from the spiritual." Wong responded.
"I'll tell the guys at the deli." Stephen chuckled, "Maybe they'll make you a metaphysical ham on rye."
"Oh. Wait, wait, wait. I think I have two hundred."
"Dollars?" Stephen asked while Sam chuckled, used to the banter now between the two wizards.
"Rupees."
"Which is?"
"Uh, buck and a half."
Stephen sighed, "What do you want?"
"I wouldn't say no to a tuna melt."
Suddenly, they heard a huge crash behind them. They all covered their heads with their hands and then turned around. Stephen's cloak came around and Sam saw the Bifrost light not unlike that of which Thor and Elizabeth often had used to travel to and from Earth, but hadn't been seen in almost two years.
They all raced up the staircase, Wong already firing up his orange shields.
Sam looked down to see Elizabeth on her face and Bruce on his back, turning from green to normal. There were also two kids who looked like they could be anywhere between seven and ten, along with three babies.
"Thanos is coming." Bruce gasped.
"Bruce! Elizabeth!" Sam shouted, dropping down into the hole with them. He quickly checked that the babies were all breathing.
"He's coming." Bruce said again.
"Who?" Stephen asked.
"Elizabeth?" Sam asked, rolling her over now that he knew the kids were alright.
She rolled over and he saw that her face was tear stained and blotchy. "Sam." She sobbed.
"Hey, whoa, it's okay." He said, pulling her into a hug. "Elizabeth, whose Thanos? And why is he coming here?"
But she couldn't answer, to distraught. He looked over at the oldest boy. "What happened?"
"Sam, let's get them out of the hole." Stephen commanded. Sam quickly handed the babies up to Stephen and Wong and then helped Elizabeth out. Bruce got out himself and then Sam.
"Thanos attacked our ship." The boy, who said his name was Halfdan said. He was trembling, looking like he wanted to cry. He clutched a little girl in his arms. The elder girl hugged Elizabeth tightly as both of them cried. "He killed everyone, except us, Uncle Thor, dad, and Heimdall. Heimdall got us to safety but. . ." Halfdan rubbed his eyes. "Mom has been crying and. . . she screamed as we were falling. I think our dad. . ."
"It's okay kid." Sam said gently.
"And he's coming here, the man who did this?" Wong asked sharply.
The boy nodded.
"Okay."
"I'm going to kill him." Elizabeth said, staggering to her feet suddenly. "I'm going to kill Thanos."
Sam wrapped his arms around her, "Elizabeth wait. Just wait. You have your kids, we need to get them to safety first."
"They're safe here, aren't they?" Elizabeth hiccupped, but sank down on the steps, burying her face in her hands.
Stephen looked over at Sam, "Is there anyone on Earth?"
"Y/N, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, definitely Bucky Barnes. But the only ones I know you can get into contact with are Y/N and Tony."
"I can portal her straight to the Compound." Stephen nodded. "Um, Elizabeth?"
Elizabeth looked at him, wiping her eyes. "Y-Yeah?"
"Is it okay if you take the kids to the Avengers Compound? Y/N Stark is there with her children and Tony should be there as well. Rhodey too."
"Um sure." She whispered, standing up.
"Alright." Stephen said, creating a portal onto the grounds of the Avengers Compound. Elizabeth picked up a child and left through the portal.
"Hey," Sam said suddenly. "I'm going to go with them. If there really is a fight here, Tony has the phone to call Steve and the others that are on the run. If I can get to the phone sooner-"
"Okay." Stephen said, pulling Sam into a kiss. "I love you."
"I'm staying with you guys." Bruce wiped his own eyes and Sam looked at him. "Thor. . . Thor is gone too, I think."
Sam squeezed Bruce's shoulder. "I'm sorry."
He nodded, "I'll. . . we'll kill this fucker."
Sam nodded and then hurried into the portal after her.
🎃 :::::  🧡  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━  🧡  ::::: 🎃
Tony had gone on a run with Everleigh that morning. Y/N of course, had to stay on the Compound with their newly born son Arlo.
"How about we go and get some ice-cream, now that we've finished our run, huh?" Tony asked his nine-year old daughter, panting a little. "You know we have our favorite ice-cream spot down around the corner."
"Then it's just around the corner, not down around the corner." Everly laughed.
"Very true lovebug." Tony chuckled.
Suddenly, he heard a very loud, professional voice ask, "Tony Stark."
He started, turning and Everleigh stopped by his side. "I'm Doctor Stephen Strange." He saw a man wearing blue robes with a red cape standing there. A portal- he assumed that's what it was- was behind him. He could see a broken staircase behind him as well, "I need you to come with me." Tony just stared and Everleigh grabbed his hand, "Oh and uh, congratulations on the new baby, by the way."
"I'm sorry," Tony responded quickly. "I thought Stephen Strange was Sam's doctor soulmate, not. . . whatever you are."
"We need your help." The man didn't respond. "Look it's not overselling it to say that the fate of the universe is at stake."
"And who's we?" Tony demanded. He then turned shocked when Bruce came to stand next to the wizard person.
"Hey, Tony."
"Bruce." Tony said, voice laced with surprise. Bruce came to stand in front of him, shaking his head. Tony could see his eyes were laced a little red and he asked, "You okay?" And then Bruce hugged him tightly.
Once he had settled down a little, wiping his eye with his thumb, Tony knelt near Everleigh, "You know how to get home to mommy, right?"
"Yes Daddy." Everleigh said solemnly.
"Good." Tony said firmly. "Then you run as fast as you can to her, understand?"
Everleigh nodded.
"I can portal her to the compound." The man said, opening a second portal which showed the Compound. Tony could already see Y/N far in the distance, talking to another woman.
"That's Elizabeth." Bruce explained, "Her and her kids. Long story short but Loki's dead. All the Asgardians are dead."
"Go." Tony said to Everleigh, who scampered through the portal and ran towards her mother. Then he followed the wizard and Bruce back inside.
He sat on a couch in what was known as the New York Sanctorum, watching another sorcerer show off some astral projections and tell a story about the infinity stones.
"At the dawn of the universe, there was nothing. Then, Boom. The Big Bang sent six elemental crystals, hurtling across the virgin universe."
There were so many corrections Tony wanted to make in the speech, but he kept quiet.
"These infinity stones each control an essential aspect of existence."
Each one was highlighted as they named it.
Blue.
"Space." Strange said.
Red.
"Reality."
Purple.
"Power."
Orange.
"Soul."
Yellow.
"Mind."
The one inside of Vision, Tony made note.
"And time." Strange said, looking down at the necklace thing he was wearing, opening it up to reveal the green stone that was inside of it.
"Tell me his name again." Tony demanded. He hated seeing Bruce so broken like this.
"Thanos." Bruce said. "He's a plague, Tony. He invades planets. He takes what he wants. He wipes out half the population. He sent Loki, brainwashed him. The attack on New York, that was him."
"This is it." Tony whispered. "What's our timeline?"
"No telling. He has the Power and the Space Stone." Bruce said. "That already makes him the strongest creature in the whole universe. If he get his hands on all six stones, Tony. . ."
"He could destroy life on a scale hitherto undreamt of." Stephen finished.
Tony stretched against the banister, "Did you seriously just say 'hitherto undreamt of'?" He asked.
"Are you seriously leaning on the Cauldron of the Cosmos?" Stephen retorted.
"Is that what that is?" Tony asked, letting go quickly as he felt something like fabric hit him. He gave Stephen a look and then said, "I'm going to allow that."
"If Thanos needs all six, why don't we just stick this one down the garbage disposal?"
"No can do."
"We swore an oath to protect the Time Stone with our lives." Wong replied.
"And I swore off dairy but then Ben & Jerry's named a flavor after me." Tony retorted. "So-"
"Stark Raving Hazelnuts." Stephen said in what almost sounded like an ashamed tone. . . but it couldn't possibly have been.
"Not bad." He responded.
"A bit chalky." Stephen said slowly.
"A Hunk of Hulk of Burning Fudge is our favorite." Wong informed Bruce, who looked utterly confused.
"That's a thing?" Bruce yelped.
"Whatever. Point is, things change." Tony responded.
"Our Oath to protect the Time Stone cannot change." Stephen said. "And this stone may be the best chance we have against Thanos."
Tony responded with, "Yeah, so conversely, it may also be his best chance against us."
"Well, if we don't do our jobs."
"What is your job exactly? Besides making balloon animals?"
"Protecting your reality douchebag."
"Okay, guys. Could we table this discussion right now?" Bruce asked almost angrily. "Thor is dead. Loki is dead. Mine and Elizabeth's soulmates are gone. Forever. The fact is we have this stone. We know where it is. Vision is out there somewhere with the Mind stone, and we have to find him now."
"Yeah, that's the thing." Tony said uncomfortably.
"What do you mean?" Bruce asked.
"Two weeks ago, Vision turned off his transponder." Tony replied. "He's offline."
"What?"
"Yeah."
"Tony, you lost another super-bot?" Bruce sounded so disappointed in him.
"I didn't lose him. He's more than that. He's evolving." Tony replied.
"Who could find Vision then?" Stephen asked.
"Shit." Tony hissed. "Probably Steve Rogers."
"Oh, great." Stephen muttered.
"Maybe. But. . ."
"Call him." Bruce demanded.
"It's not that easy." Tony said, looking at Bruce over his shoulder. "God, we haven't caught up in a spell, have we?"
"No."
"The Avengers broke up. We're toast."
"Broke up? Like What? Like the Beatles?"
"Cap and I fell out hard." Tony muttered. "Sort've."
"Not quite true." Stephen interjected. "The Government made them choose and they all fought each other in an Avengers Civil War. Half of them like Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and Sam Wilson are on the run. The other half like Y/N Stark, Scott Lang, and Clint Barton are on House arrest."
"Either way, we're not on speaking terms." Tony grumbled.
"Tony." Bruce begged, near tears, "Listen to me. Thor's gone. Thanos is coming. It doesn't matter who you're talking to or not."
Tony sighed. He had always carried the phone on him, no matter where he went, just in case. Never thought he was actually going to need it. He flipped it open. "Flip phone." He muttered in disgust. He paused though, as he heard something.
He looked around, things slightly rattling. Stephens black hair was moving slightly in a wind. "Say Doc, you wouldn't happen to be moving your hair, would ya?"
"Not at the moment, no."
What kind of answer was that? When did he move his fucking hair then?
Car alarms started to beep outside, they could see people running past the doors of the Sanctorum, and could hear screams outside.
Tony was the first one out the door, opening it up, and then headed in the direction that people were running from. A woman and a man bumped into each other, both of them falling. He quickly helped the woman to her feet and she kept running without a word. A car crashed into a pole.
"Help him." He ordered.
"Wong!" Stephen shouted.
"Got it."
He put his glasses on. "F.R.I.D.A.Y. what am I looking at?"
"Not sure. I'm working on it."
"Hey! You might wanna put that Time Stone in your back pocket, Doc." Tony said, before taking off into a run.
Tony saw what basically looked like a flying donut in the sky. Chocolate, maybe some orange sort of goop inside of it.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y. evac anyone south of 43rd Street." Tony ordered. "Notify first responders."
Strange did some sort of spell, which stopped the wind. Tony looked over his shoulder at the wizard and he winked at him. Tony raised his eyebrows in acceptance and then looked to see where a blue light had beamed two creatures down from the sky. One was extremely tall and buff, with heavy armor. The other was thin and shorter, but looked a lot like a squid.
"Hear me and rejoice. You are about to die at the hands of the Children of Thanos. Be thankful that your meaningless lives are now contributing-"
"I'm sorry. Earth is closed today." Tony shouted, interrupting the monologue. "You better pack it up and get outta here."
"Stonekeeper. Does this chattering animal speak for you?"
"Certainly not. I speak for myself." Stephen said, stepping forwards, doing some really cool, dramatic, somewhat stupid hand motions to create shields, "You're trespassing in this city and on this planet." Wong did the same shields on the other side of him.
"He means get lost Squidward!" Tony shouted.
"He exhausts me. Bring me the stone." Squidward said and the stomping brute creature started towards them.
"Banner, you want a piece?" Tony asked.
"Mmm, no, not really." Bruce responded. "But when do I ever get what I want?"
"That's right." Tony responded back. "I know it's been a while. It's gonna be good to have you, buddy."
"Okay. Shh. Let me just. . . I need to concentrate here for a second." Tony looked at him skeptically. He was green at the neck and knuckles, but nothing more. "Come on, come on man."
"Where's your guy?"
"I don't know. We've sorta been having a thing."
"It's no time for a thing."
"I know!"
"That's the thing right there. Let's go."
Stephen looked at him in expectation. "Dude you're embarrassing me in front of the wizards." Tony said.
"Either I can't or he won't." Bruce responded.
"It's okay. Hey, stand down. Keep an eye on him. Thank you." Tony said, realizing the emotional stress of losing his entire family on the soulmate side probably was a lot. He thought it would fuel the Hulks rage, but perhaps he was wrong.
He stepped forwards, pulling the strings of his jacket, then tapping the new arc reactor on his chest. He took his glasses off as the suit seemed to melt onto his skin, the helmet coming over his face. He lifted his shield in time to counter the attack with the brutes club, before bashing him with his fist. Light jets came from his back, shooting a beam of energy that sent the brute flying backwards, which Squidward flicked away easily. The beams went back into Tony's suit.
"Where'd that come from?" Bruce asked in excitement.
"It's nanotech, you like it?" Tony asked, "A little something I-"
Suddenly he was sent skyrocketing as the ground underneath him shot up. He swooped around through the wizards, blasting the car that was sent their way.
"Gotta get that stone out of here, now." Tony said.
"It stays with me." The angry wizard said.
"Exactly. Bye." Tony said, then flew towards the aliens. He dodged the concrete walls, but was hit by something metallic and powerful enough to send him all the way back to where he'd been running earlier with Everleigh.
"Tony, you okay?" Bruce's voice called out, footsteps pounding on the ground as he ran over. "How we doing? Good? Bad?"
"Really, really good." Tony said sarcastically from where he was laying seven inches down in the dirt, back against a tree. "Really good. Do you plan on helping out?"
"I'm trying. He won't come out." Bruce responded.
"Hammer." Tony pushed Bruce out of the way, then tried to beam the brute with his laser, but his shield blocked it, cutting down trees instead with backlash.
Tony was suddenly stopped by being crushed by a hammer, by a very slender figure in a red suit. "Hey man!" The kid greeted the alien cheerfully. "What's up Mr. Stark?"
"Kid, where'd you come from?"
"A field trip to MOMA." He responded as he was picked up and tossed across the park. It gave Tony a chance to fire a laser beam up his side.
"What's this guys problem Mr. Stark?"
"Uh, he's from space. He came here to steal a necklace from a wizard." Tony said and the two of them continued to fight the brute. Tony watched Stephen fly by, seemingly unconscious or something. "Kid that's the wizard. Get on it."
"On it." Peter said, taking off after Stephen.
After a few minutes, he heard Peters' voice, "Um, Mr. Stark, I'm being beamed up."
"Hang on, kid." Tony said, extremely stressed out. He tried fighting the metal contraption around his body. The brute ran at him with a sword, leaping, but before he could come down on him, a portal opened up and the brute fell into a snowy tundra. Wong cut the portal off as he lunged upwards, the hand being cut off.
"Wong you're invited to my baby shower." Tony said, before blasting off the ground and taking off after the kid and wizard. "Give me a little juice F.R.I.D.A.Y." His feet melded together into one big booster to give him some extra speed. "Unlock 17-A."
"Pete you gotta let go, I'm gonna catch you." Tony instructed.
"But you said save the Wizard." Peter argued. "I can't breathe."
"We're to high up. You're running out of air."
"Yeah." the kid gasped, "That makes sense." And then suddenly, "Mr. Stark it smells like a new car in here!"
"Happy trails, kid." Tony hovered over him. "F.R.I.D.A.Y. send him home."
"Yep."
"Oh come on!"

From a sermon by Saint Peter Damian, bishop
Invincibly defended by the banner of the Cross
Dear brothers, our joy in today’s feast is heightened by our joy in the glory of Easter, just as the splendour of a precious jewel enhances the beauty of its gold setting.
Saint George was a man who abandoned one army for another: he gave up the rank of tribune to enlist as a soldier for Christ. Eager to encounter the enemy, he first stripped away his worldly wealth by giving all he had to the poor. Then, free and unencumbered, bearing the shield of faith, he plunged into the thick of the battle, an ardent soldier for Christ.
Clearly what he did serves to teach us a valuable lesson: if we are afraid to strip ourselves of our worldly possessions, then we are unfit to make a strong defence of the faith.
As for Saint George, he was consumed with the fire of the Holy Spirit. Armed with the invincible standard of the cross, he did battle with an evil king and acquitted himself so well that, in vanquishing the king, he overcame the prince of all wicked spirits, and encouraged other soldiers of Christ to perform brave deeds in his cause.
Of course, the supreme invisible arbiter was there, who sometimes permits evil men to prevail so that his will may be accomplished. And although he surrendered the body of his martyr into the hands of murderers, yet he continued to take care of his soul, which was supported by the unshakeable defence of its faith.
Dear brothers, let us not only admire the courage of this fighter in heaven’s army but follow his example. Let us be inspired to strive for the reward of heavenly glory, keeping in mind his example, so that we will not be swayed from our path, though the world seduce us with its smiles or try to terrify us with naked threats of its trials and tribulations.
We must now cleanse ourselves, as Saint Paul tells us, from all defilement of body and spirit, so that one day we too may deserve to enter that temple of blessedness to which we now aspire.
Anyone who wishes to offer himself to God in the tent of Christ, which is the Church, must first bathe in the spring of holy baptism; then he must put on the various garments of the virtues. As it says in the Scriptures: Let your priests be clothed in justice. He who is reborn in baptism is a new man. He may no longer wear the things that signify mortality. He has discarded the old self and must put on the new. He must live continually renewed in his commitment to a holy sojourn in this world.
Truly we must be cleansed of the stains of our past sins and be resplendent in the virtue of our new way of life. Then we can be confident of celebrating Easter worthily and of truly following the example of the blessed martyrs.

"Ron honestly had no idea what he was doing.
He felt more out to sea than he’d ever been in his entire life and he had since he’d opened his eyes that morning.
Y’know, two mornings after he had learned his father was dying.
Two morning’s after he had told Nick about his whole sordid life story and somehow, by some miracle they’d gotten through it. All Nick had done at the end of Ron recounting his oldest scars, wounds he hoped he’d never have to catalogue for another person again, was kiss him firmly and look at him lovingly and tell Ron that he was fucking proud of him for God’s sakes.
He thought it might get better, that the overwhelming feeling of unmoored-ness might go away when he had actually gotten up.
(It hadn’t.)"
Or
Alternatively: Ron goes to see his father, Nick is there every step of the way, Bradley is supporting from afar and Maverick and Ron are still passing each other like ships in the night.
Featuring: Admiral Kerner being awful, Nick being the best fucking person alive, Ron hurting but being so brave about it, living through trauma and getting closure, and more of Brad and Ron being sweet.
AGAIN PLEASE READ AUTHORS NOTE FOR CONTENT WARNINGS!!
ON WARNINGS: all previous warnings on chapter one still apply and my message is the same - there isn't any explicit homophobia but there are discussions of familial relationships and trauma, all of which surround Ron's dad being kinda sucky in general but specifically surrounding his sexuality. No slurs or anything explicit, but it causes Ron a lot of pain and turmoil and it is extensively discussed in this fic. He gets closure so that helps but does not negate the pain. AGAIN if any of that sounds triggering to you PLEASE DON'T READ. I will say that there is a lot of important context in here, but you should in no shape or form hurt yourself to read this. I trust y'all to make that determination for yourself.
Some new ones too: there is discussion of Slider having sex for the first time while drunk. This is murky water in terms of consent (as in it is *not* consent) but it makes sense within the context of the story. I.e we have another content warning for sexual assault even though Ron did a) want to have sex and b) was not coerced into having sex. HIs feelings of turmoil surround his sexuality and what the sexual act means for his confrontation of that - not the sex itself. EITHER WAY PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN READING.
I think that's all of it but yeah. I probably forgot something and i'm trying really hard to remember but give me some grace if I miss something. I will update it.
Other than that (I know right??) thanks for reading and *please* enjoy

Dude, you celebrated Aaron Bushnell’s suicide. You’re clearly not connected to your Judaism in any way if you can’t even comprehend the basic idea of Pikuach Nefesh. I hope you grow and learn not to celebrate people killing themselves
Sincerely, a former (yay!) suicidal Jew who actually cares about human life
Hi. I am glad to hear you are no longer suicidal, it's not a good place to be, I know from personal experience.
On to your main point. I don't feel that I am in any way "celebrating" the death of Aaron Bushnell, at least not in any positive light surrounding the fact that he died. I think what he did was horrifying and I think that's the point. Preservation of human life is an incredibly important thing to be mindful of especially during a war, and I truly believe that was something he was fully aware of. I didn't know him personally, I guess I can never say with absolute certainty why he did it, but with all the available evidence I feel confident in saying that his goal WAS to preserve human lives. I grew up surrounded by US military culture and service members and I understand the significance of an American soldier in an American uniform doing something like that while making those statements. I understand that his life was lost and that that in and of itself is a fucking tragedy, but I think the impact he has had will save more lives in the bigger picture.
The US military and police have incredibly close ties with the IDF to the point that I *know* non-jewish, non-israeli, antisemitic people here in America who have personally worked and trained with the IDF and support them uncritically. The US military is one of our government's "greatest" assets (much sarcasm) when it comes to political power and the culture surrounding the military is extremely strong. If attitudes about what's happening in Gaza were to shift within those spheres it would bring incredible change to a movement with the interest in protecting human life.
Self immolation has been used as a form of protest before. Aaron Bushnell's is not unique, it is just the most recent and named case. A woman who self-immolated in Georgia has been in critical condition since December and I truly hope she survives. It is something that has occured on record for thousands of years. I don't hold the belief that this is a practice to be encouraged or advocated for, I think it is a very jarring wake up call, especially in the society we live in today. I think the fact that you and I are so absolutely horrified at the thought of it *is the point*. He was a white male US service member. People who were refusing to acknowledge lives lost in Gaza were forced to name him because of his privileged position AS a white male US service member. I think that what he did was an incredibly brave and selfless sacrifice and that to try and bury his actions is disrespectful to that sacrifice. No one should have to go to such extremes to get their government's attention.
The fact that this is horrifying, especially to those that put a lot of value in pikuach nefesh and similar values in other cultures is the fucking point. I cannot save that man, what happened has already happened. The only thing I, as a random person on the internet, can do is use the momentum his sacrifice created to try to save more lives in the coming months by putting pressure on the military industrial complex that he publicly refused to support.
What he did was horrifying, and that is the fucking point.
Edit: I know this is an extremely controversial topic and people have a variety of reasons to agree or disagree with his actions. I don't expect everyone to support what he did, but I at least would hope you could see why he did it

please, talk more about Tsu'tey's disabilities. How does our brave (and very much alive) warrior cope?
so this is going on the observation that he was only shot in the upper-middle chest, and that he survived the fall due to hitting trees and brush on the way down. spoiler warning, he's so fucked up its not even funny, he means it when he says he wishes Jake just let him die.
first and foremost, he's got fibromyalgia, I don't make the rules (yes I do, and I'm projecting, cause if I have it, he can have it too). fibro is a chronic pain and fatigue caused by traumatic events on the body, mentally or physically, and is often found in soldier/warriors, people who have suffered traumatic injuries or infections, and people with ptsd; tsu'tey is 3 for 3.
this means he has widespread pain from the aching muscle pain to the stabbing of nerve pain, fatigue that makes functioning difficult, brain fog, stiffness, sensitivity (to light, sound, touch/pain, etc.), and mental health issues.
the damage to his lungs from taking multiple chest shots makes him more breathless than the fatigue did. he gets a lot of chest pain and dry coughing fits, and if he really pushes himself he tends to cough up blood (which really scares spider)
because his wounds got infected pretty horribly he has long-term immunocompromisation, and particularly lung sickness (especially due to the above).
the blood loss, tissue death, and muscle loss from the injury and bed rest equals more pain more weakness and more feeling like shit. his entire body was poorly oxygenated do to the blood loss meaning he suffers all sorts of organ issues, including brain damage. it's what makes the day to day so hard. being laid up in the infirmary caused all the muscle he had honed to be a good warrior and chief to die off. he lost so much of himself so quickly and it's something he can never truly gain back.
the fall also fucked him up, breaks and fractures to heal from, more trauma to his already haywire nervous system.
all of the above gives him horrible mobility and mental health issues; horrific, paralyzing depression, paired with insomnia, PTSD, nightmares, panic attacks. main problem is, he tries to push through his issues, trying to 'break past them' further breaking himself. he hates himself and his life, he hates his body and his mind. he hates everything. he doesn't do his physical therapy, he just tries to jump back into life like it was before the accident. he sinks to a depression that knows no match, he cycles through different forms of pushing himself to far, self harming as punishment, over and over again until he's more broken that he began. he doesn't cope, not for the first few years; he becomes a secluded bastard that hates everything.
that is until spider starts taking to him and he's forced to exist, to go slower, to have fun.
he starts wearing his respirator (it purifies air and offers a little bit of support to his lungs) when he needs it, cause the coughing makes the kid worry. he paces himself so the kid can keep up and so that way he has the energy to take care of him, protect him, even love him by a certain point. the kid serves as physical and occupational therapy, bringing tsu'tey out of the pit he dug himself into and lets him actually start healing. he has to train with weapons again, starting at the easy stuff, to train the kid. he has to show him the ropes of the forest slowly, building up in advancement, so the smaller human can keep up. he has to smile and indulge the kids need for play and affection, ultimately opening him back up.
as he attatches to the kid he finds himself worried about him, spider needed a positive role model, especially as spider started to understand his own limitations, disabilities, he didn't want spider to be anything like he had. so he starts letting people help him, if only fractionally, so he can start making himself someone spider can look up to.
when spider befriends the viperwolf tsu'tey ends up forming the "gruff disabled dad who didn't want the dog, but then they end up being friends and the dog helps him move cope with his disability" (I watched that happen between my dog and my grandpa and it's so sweet). he has to take the thing on walks (no he doesn't), needs to go out into the woods when spider doesn't come down from high camp to make sure it's ok (he also doesn't have to do that either), needs to give it company so it doesn't get lonely without spider (even tsu'tey knows he doesn't need to do that, sue him)
by the time spider is 16 and s trained warrior under tsu'tey, the man has healed as much as one can, it had been about 11 years of the two of them stuck together. tsu'tey is still very much disabled, but his minds in a better place about it, he stops trying to be who he was and rather who he can be now. he tries to be who spider needs him to be, because his opinions the only one that really matters anymore (Jake can go to hell [affectionate])
the one thing tsu'tey had truly lost to the war was his ability to love and have kids. he had sylwanin taken from him, his soulmate. he didn't want to be with neytiri but was willing to take her as his mate, but even she was taken from him. with no role in the village he was not mandated to mate, and he really had no interest. he didn't want someone who wasn't sylwanin, so he gave up on that and the prospect of children; even if the one thing he wanted in life was being a father. it killed him to let go of that dream, and he's sure that was part of why the depression got so bad. but now he had spider, his spirit child, and it saved his life.

Dead Dove Venting below, Do Not Read
I'm aging another decade every time I see any update on the state of things at this point.
Winter as a season is melting into nonexistence. Within a decade we'll likely be past the point of no return. Corporate pollution continues pumping up into the air, boiling away the future and drowning the generations to come.
Devices are being made to slot in people's brains or to lock around a head to filter company training and duties into you as you sleep.
AI is eating people's art and work and faces and shitting them out in corporations' desperation to excise human involvement from creation just to pinch another penny.
American education is sliding down the toilet between book bans, strangled sex ed, and 'history' lessons edited to erase the reality of human atrocity and variety.
Bodily autonomy has became a joke since Roe v Wade was stabbed in the back. A Texan woman--a mother already--a mother-to-be who was heartbroken to discover the guaranteed painful death of her unborn child and whose full term 'birth' would only mean agony for the newborn before its end and a risk to herself and future attempts at carrying a child--who met every possible exception set forth by Texas' abortion ban, jumped through every legal hoop, and finally was told she could go through with the abortion...only to have the state's attorney general declare she couldn't do it. She had to flee--flee--her own home state to get a life-saving procedure because the 'pro-life' movement showed its full colors to her and the country as it wiped its ass with hers (and every other person with a womb's) human rights.
Pro-life is not about preserving life. Not when its supporters are so rabid as to demand a woman risk her life for a fetus destined to die within moments of exiting the womb.
Pro-life is about forced birth and always has been. For the sake of making cattle of women and adding numbers to the population, willingly or otherwise.
And in that vein, of course child labor is making a resurgence. Now your 14-year-old kid can serve in the grease trap or bar of their choice, dishing out food full of microplastics and booze full of bad decisions to grown adults ready to wink at a high schooler and ask what they're doing after work. Heartwarming! 12-year-old is mowing lawns for the chance to save up for college where they'll get into loan debt for a degree that won't get them a job because every position in their field requires ten years' experience! Gets a new mower donated to the cause!!
Artificial inflation, price gouging, and wage stagnation have eaten the promise of independence out from under an entire generation, their little siblings, the next generation to come. We're living in cars, in sardine-packed apartments, under our parents' roofs. Probably until the day we die, ancient and hobbling inside Walmart's sliding doors as greeters and cashiers, at least until the jobs get taken by smiling hotel bots and self checkouts. Retirement no longer exists as a concept.
Genocides on top of genocides, funded by vulture governments, against their citizens' will, using money that has magically appeared to funnel aid and weapons to the mass murderers slaughtering innocent people with a brutality of such scale and evil that it cracks the mind to try and measure. A shame that money wasn't around to help the tax payers or the people in need at home. Guess how many people go hungry in America, the Greatest Nation. Or don't guess! Look.
Nausea and shame and bile.
Bile bile bile at the thought of this country, with its masturbatory obsession with World War II, with its endless marathon of 'war hero' films showing the plights and heroics of our brave soldiers sent to fight for our rights!
(Because they were drafted. Because they were poor. Because they were lied to with myths of glory and valor. Because they would be killing and dying for the Greater Good.)
All this. All this. When we are living through the proof-positive that if Pearl Harbor hadn't happened, kicking the self-absorbed hornet nest of our government into frenzy, the good ol' U.S. of A. would absolutely have jumped on Adolf's dick and applauded the Holocaust start to finish. Hell, we might have handed them every killing tool but the nukes.
Now here comes 2024.
Voting Day looms. And of course, Joe's poll numbers are shitting the bed the way Trump is shitting himself in the various court battles still chewing on him like spray-tanned cud.
In 2020, we had the vigor of the country shouting as one: VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO. Because we were living in a different, far more intense, borderline fascist state. We felt the pressure of the stakes of a second term with the despotic Cheeto.
But now as more blood spills and our blood boils, there are, of course, people clamoring again about how voting is a sham. What kind of sucker is still convinced that voting red or blue, no matter who, is anything but giving candy to a genocidal joke? Both parties have proven they're corrupt. Complicit. Why fucking bother? We need to do more!
And we do.
We absolutely do need to do more.
But for the love of every god I no longer fucking believe in, do it after voting for whoever Is Not the Republican Candidate. You don't want to vote for Joe? For any of the potential Democratic candidates? For whoever is blue, no matter who?
Fine! Fuck it! Stick to your guns! Vote for fucking no one! Play chicken with the top office of the entire country all over again! 2016 the Sequel!
And when every MAGA shithead votes in Trump or one of his sycophants and plunges us into Diet Tyrant Rule 2.0, at least you can wear a little badge of pride--but no actual pride badges, ha ha, DeSantis has already declared rainbows ~too gay~ for Florida schools ha ha ha--that says, 'Well, Both Candidates Were Shit, So I Did the Morally Spotless Thing and Voted for Neither! Surely This Will Earn Me a Good Grade in Martyrdom.'
I hope I'm just making too many assumptions about how literal some people are being about 'why bother' and 'hold your vote hostage' kind of talk. I hope I'm reading too much into hyperbole and not seeing the rise of a new wave of bots, undercover right-wingers, and genuinely self-sabotaging moralists who think not making time to go click a button to Participate in the One (1) Guaranteed Expression of Power We Have as Citizens short of en masse protest and/or outright civil war.
I want there to be a magic switch to flip to unfuck all of this. Half of it. Even a fraction. Every day I wake up and things are worse. Even here, on the one website I regularly dip into to try and escape into silliness and personal passions, there's no avoiding the realities of the world as they get worse and worse and worse and fucking worse.
This is as close to cosmic horror as I think we can get short of Cthulhu finally getting out of bed and wiping us out.
Everything is getting worse.
All the 2024 vote has to offer at this point is a choice between Current Bullshit (Democrat) and Exponentially Worse Bullshit with a Side of THIS CANDIDATE WILL TRY TO BECOME THE FOREVER-KING OF 'MURRICA AND WILL BE EQUALLY MONSTROUS (IF NOT MORESO) IN THE GENOCIDE GAME (Republican).
But I will still drag myself into the booth. I will still vote blue, no matter who. And I will still support Palestine, still protest against evil, still raise my voice. And I'll do so in a country that won't be run by people who want to double down on regressing society to the Dark Ages with a crossover between The Handmaid's Tale and Orwell's nightmares. Who will take dissent as an offense worthy of violence and violation. Who will take every scrap of progress made by the left or by the citizens themselves and set it all on fire.
I'm tired. I'm afraid. More tired under that.
There's such bliss in the idea of flipping the bird and then flipping the table when it comes to the small important steps we can still make as people in our society. It all feels insignificant. Lackluster compared to the bombastic moves of on-the-ground protest. But you can do the small and the big steps. And we need to.
This is not Mad Max. This isn't a comic book or an action movie. There is no utopia waiting on the other side of dismissing elections as ~not worth the bother~ when it was an election that put Trump in power and another that kicked him out.
If anyone out there has a magic switch to flip that will unfuck this country? That will unfuck the entire planet's degradation? Flip it. Right now. Hammer it until it breaks and all the withheld Grace and Sanity pours over everything like a miracle tide and we can all wake up from this group night terror.
But if that switch doesn't exist?
Inch along. Do what you can. Vote in every election, big and small. Act. Support. Boycott. Scream. Fight. Do not shrug and sink into apathy. Little steps to big steps and all the intermediates in-between.
We're not in Hell, despite the weather. Sweating in December. Another massacre per minute. No, not Hell.
Hell has justice.
All we have is this.
