...to craft a CSS rule like the following...

CSS Rules should be placed inside your project's **Story** > **Stylesheet** area.

I really wish there was a forum/site similar to choice of games for Twine games. I love using that website to find new Interactive Fictions to fall in love with and see what people are working on.

It is really difficult to find the equivalent of that for Twine besides reddit, which is more focused on coding advice (which has helped me greatly).

Itchio is great for publishing and their filter system makes it super easy to find a game you could be interested in but it doesn't have that community feeling where you can see people talking about games and recommending them.

The choicescript community is what got me interested in creating my own IF, and I hope one day Twine can have something similar.

Discord Server + Call for Beta Readers

Hihi! Read below for information about the new discord server. If you're interested in beta reading for Rains in Heaven, scroll a little lower. There's also some news I'd like to inform y'all at the end.

You are to react to the message in the #rules channel before you gain access to anything else (i.e. general chat, announcements, and updates). After completing that, you can go to #roles channel to pick your roles including your pronouns, what continent you're from, what RO interests you the most, and if you want to be apart of the spoilers chat. Reacting to the spoilers roles will give you access to the spoilers channel, but if you don't react to it, you won't get access.

Remember: general chat is for everything BUT spoilers.

What are spoilers? Anything that reveals what happened in the demo; things that people who haven't played through the game won't know.

As it is my first time creating a discord server, there may be errors or issues with the channel permissions and other stuff. Please be patient and kind with me. If you run into any server issues, you can let me know in the #bug-reports channel.

Also note that the server is not actively monitored by moderators.

Call for Beta Readers (Closed)

If you're interested in beta-reading my demo before it goes out, please leave your discord username in the comments below and join the discord server. I'll accept anyone that comments between today and next Friday (February 21st). Afterwards, you'll be given access to the beta reader channels where you can read the rules and instructions.

Briefly, to be a beta reader, you must be able to keep everything confidential. This includes any passwords I provide, and any potential spoilers from the beta demo. You must also be kind when reporting. For example, if you see multiple of the same errors, don't be like "are you dumb? how could you miss that so many times?"

Beta readers will have one full week to beta playthrough the demo and report any grammatical errors or bugs or feedback on the plot. More information about everything will be provided later on discord.

That being said, I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that if everything goes smoothly with the beta reading this month, the demo may be out earlier than the target deadline which was end of March. I'm hoping the demo could be out by March 7th. I'll confirm this closer to the end of February.

The bad news is that I've been hit by writer's block and too many tests/assignments, resulting in it being impossible for me to finish the Valentine's day specials before February ends. I'm still planning on posting them, but I might be pushing them into mid-March instead.

I’m not dead!

You may be asking- where did Nico River and her system go? Is she alive? Did she not die?!

Okay, okay- first of all, I’m okay! Was caught up with finals and I’m moving out to another state- erm, from a small little US colony called Puerto Rico.

ANYWAYS!

Jokes and excuses aside, I have some progress on the game and a surprise… a Discord server! It’s centered around my one-woman indie developer company (that’s literally not even and won’t be registered for a while) and my future games. That includes KUWTW!

As for the game, it’s starting to take its shape! It’s going to take a bit of time with the process of moving out and all. But I’m writing the scenes with the very little free time I have. My system and I have been dividing the work between alters for this to be easier to handle. But like I said, it will take a while.

But yes! The game is on!

Day 1: My First Game Jam!

On the evening of July 20th, I set my alarm for 8am. This is because I want to participate in My First Game Jam summer 2023, for some reason.

The theme was announced at 8am sharp in my time zone. Whilst entirely optional, the theme they agreed upon to inspire jammers was 'cycles'.

I wanted to brainstorm a little before attempting something anywhere near coding, so I browsed some story prompts, opened up OneNote and attempted to map out a story arc, as well as defining characters and locations, and additionally writing up a reference section to link to any resources and credit any assets.

I had decided to use Twine as my engine of choice. The last time My First Game Jam was hosted, I had planned to learn and use Unity but unfortunately bit off more than I could chew, which resulted in me not submitting a game at all and shamefully lurking in the discord's #general channel.

At first I was intimidated but as my answer to the @daily question in the discord, my second goal was to "actually read the documentation" of my chosen engine, which unsurprisingly was very helpful. I managed to whip up a prototype for the entirety of the prologue for this small game whilst learning to use conditional variables.

My first goal though was to "actually submit something this time" which, with the way things had been going today, seemed like it could be genuinely plausible. But upon reading deeper into the topic of variables, I suddenly thought: "I could make the game I initially wanted to make in unity, but was too chicken to attempt."

So I dug out the old school notebook and pens and got to work.

I found my handscribbled gameloop I had made for the previous jam, and went about inputting this loop into Twine. I ended up with a simple game with a beginning that reset all your scores, an end that displayed your scores once you completed the game and, if you played your cards right, could be played infinitely.

In looking up different types of variable rules for this game prototype, I found you could balance player choices with luck probabilities. Using these types of variables would give more unique outcomes, which in turn could mean more replayability for the game. I had a brief discussion with my fiance about weighted probabilities, but this is definitely an area that could do with some more research (and at this time of night, probably tomorrow!).

So in summary:

- Berni brainstormed an extremely simple game

- She then read the documentation for Twine and SugarCube

- Berni was like fuck dis I can make ma game BIGGER and b e t t e r...

- She decided her two goals tomorrow would be:

1. implement CSS into her game

2. expand sections of text that could be randomised

it's almost getting to the point i feel like IF authors need to have people on their blogs who read through the asks, throw out the rude ones or the ones that cross boundaries, then lock the ask box so the authors can safely and comfortably answer asks. Y'all these are generally free, single people works. They shouldn't have to be stressed about asshole anons killing their enjoyment. The other alternative is all authors shutting off anon asks for good.
