The average cost of business desktops that I sell at work is $700-$900; these are devices that I would give an anticipated lifespan of 7 years, with hardware upgrades planned at 5 years. This is for a mid-range desktop with a 3-year next business day onsite warranty, no software, and does not include the cost of tax, shipping, or configuration. The cost of labor can come close to the cost of the machine for configuration. If I were *PERSONALLY* deploying these machines (pulling them out of the box, debloating, creating profiles, installing software, reboxing, transporting to the site, installing and connecting to peripherals) I'd probably charge around $200-300 per device. My work charges a lot more. Because of that, a 1500 computer is quite likely to be a 700 computer with three hours of estimated labor. If you've got an in-house IT department and aren't going to be paying through the nose for setup, you can get *a lot* of business-class computer for $1500.

If someone at work asked me for a $1500 computer, I would assume that was the cost of the machine ONLY, no peripherals, no configuration, no installation, no software, though I would try to consider both tax and our markup and would look for devices that would maximize performance while under-but-close-to the mark. If I found something that was slightly over (say by up to $70), I would drop our markup to get closer to the client's budget.

What this means for YOU, the computer consumer, is that when you're looking at a computer you need to consider the following in your budget, NOT just the sticker price.

Peripherals (computers almost all come with a mouse and a keyboard, these are usually inexpensive but very sturdy; if you want a nice keyboard and an ergonomic mouse you have to buy your own)

Whether you will LOSE peripherals when you replace your current device - do you need to buy an external optical disk drive if your old machine had a CD drive but the new machine doesn't?

Those things can add hundreds of dollars to your total cost, so figure out how much that will be so that you can figure out what your ACTUAL budget for your computer is.

(Also your computer shouldn't be plugged directly into the wall; if you're getting ready to replace a machine and you don't already own a desktop UPS, a desktop UPS should be part of the cost of your next machine!)

Hey! I’m starting my education in the paralegal field this fall, any tips or advice? Your blog is gorgeous! Hope you’re having a good day :)

Hi! Thank you! I do have a few tips I often like to give:

1) Be a self motivated learner! Alot of the law is researching and learning on the way. You will not know every statute or every filing software. You just google and learn along the way.

2) Legal writing is very different from normal writing, even different from academic writing. Legal writing is very cut, dry, and to the point. It usually follows the IRAC format. Issue, Ruling, Analysis, Conclusion. Basically, state the relevant laws and explain the case.

3) Keep a notebook solely for paralegal tasks! I have a leather diary designated for this. I write down all the little things I learn, like steps for filing motions, steps for serving discovery, jot down important deadlines, jot down legal jargon and commonly used statutes, jot down examples of legal citations to refer to, etc. This really comes in handy!

4) Understand your attorney! Eventually, when you do work with an attorney, identify the type of personality and the type of work environment you like. Some people have a bad experience as a paralegal because they're paired to an insufferable attorney. Some people have a great time, because their attorney is chill, collaborative, and a good mentor. Understand how your attorney likes to do things. How they like to organize tasks, organize files, maintain correspondence, etc. Basically, take their work style, improve on it, and make it more efficient.

5) Network! Alot of times lawyers and law firms are not posting jobs on the internet. It's more word of mouth. So try to network and do legal internships to get your foot in the door.

6) Portfolio! I have a digital and physical portfolio of my work with sample legal documents I drafted, sample case briefs, sample indictments, etc. In today's impossible job market, a portfolio can really help you stand out!

Finally, just have an open mind. When you are in your paralegal classes, it can take a second to get a hang of things. You may also find some patches to be dull and boring. But, the law is very diverse and there are many niches you can go into after graduation. If in the future you want to pivot away from being a paralegal, your experience in law firms or legal offices, can help you enter other fields like business, public policy, etc. A paralegal certificate is truly what you make of it. I kind of see it as a DIY degree!

How are humans increasingly becoming more similar to cyborgs in this day and age?

Humans are definitely becoming more like cyborgs every single day. We all depend on technology to help us on a daily basis, even if it’s just completing a simple task. People also spend a lot of time on their phones and other electronic devices each day, and it’s like we’re attached to our phones now. Some may feel like they can’t live without their phones and that they would be completely lost without this small piece of technology. We are so dependent on our devices nowadays that it really makes us wonder what the difference is between us and cyborgs, and quite frankly, there isn’t much of a difference. 

2. Why are cyborgs usually thought of as feminine or having a female voice?

Cyborgs or people that are designed for video games are usually imagined as women because it’s more appealing to the general population, or men in particular. For example, when we looked at the Mavis Beacon documentary in class, we saw that this sort of cyborg was modeled after a woman. This is because she presents a more motherly figure when teaching people how to type. To take it one step further, when we think about our early school years, most if not all of our teachers were female because teachers are seen as more of a mother figure. So when developing the Mavis Beacon typing software, the creators thought it best to make it a woman that teaches the typing program because it’s more comforting. 

3. Why are men favored in most fields of work, and what does this have to do with the concept of white supremacy? 

Men are thought of as stronger and more able and willing to work hard and provide for the family, which is why they are often favored in most fields of work. Women are seen as weak in terms of labor and are thought of as stay-at-home mothers. Taking this back to the days of slavery, black women were made to stay in the house and do laundry, cook, clean, and take care of the children while the men did the hard labor. White men, specifically, would usually be the head of the household and would be wealthy and powerful, which would put them even higher than black men. So there’s sort of a class system in a sense when looking at our history when it comes to labor and white supremacy. 

4. Why is the feminine presence so popular in today’s gaming culture?

The feminine presence is so popular, specifically in video games today, because women are sadly seen as objects sometimes and often not taken seriously. For example, in GTA, women are seen as prostitutes and are not really seen as tough. I’m not one to play video games, but from what I’ve gathered, a lot of other games are like this, in that they portray women as something to be earned or some sort of object, while the men are doing all the “manly” things such as driving the cars, acting as soldiers, defending the land, etc. 

5. Do you think female figures being created for video games through the male gaze is similar to how facial recognition software fails when looking at people of color?

I think female figures being created through the male gaze is sort of similar in some ways to how facial recognition software fails to correctly identify people of color. In both scenarios, one party is being disadvantaged because they are seen as “less-than” citizens. The designers of the facial recognition software failed to fix the errors in the codes that mistakenly convict the wrong people of color. Like I mentioned before, women are often seen in the eyes of men as “objects” or some sort of prize to be won, which makes it even worse when women in video games are designed by men because the women they design are oftentimes inaccurate. Both of these issues can have big consequences, and problems continue to arise in terms of each of these situations.

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) is a programming paradigm based on the concept of "objects," which represent real-world entities. Well, while I’m stuck in traffic, I can talk about all my OCs lmao.

I saw a TikTok a few weeks ago of someone sharing all their OCs for the content they intake and enjoy. The caption was “I am cringe but I am free.” And, honestly, felt.

So, it’s my turn to be cringe and share my OCs and you have to deal with it lol.

- Arcane

I don’t actually have a name for him, tbh. I have just been calling him “Gale” which will make sense as I explain. He grew up a Zaunite working in the mines and his health was slowly deteriorating from constant exposure to the gray and hazardous conditions. When given the chance to escape the mines and the undercity as a whole. He takes it. He’d die if he didn’t and he needs to fight to survive. Managing to escape and take some time to begin recovering his health, he takes inspiration for the tales of Janna and begins researching the science of wind and air. Eventually he returns to Zaun (potentially some time after season 1) with his new tech that allows him to manipulate air currents and blow away toxic fumes within the undercity. He’d probably end up joining up with the firelights later, or something, to start working towards bringing clean air to Zaun. He’s my most recent so I’m still working out the kinks with him.

- Persona

Specifically he fits into the Persona 5 framework. His name is Daichi and his codename is “Artifice.” He’s exactly what the people of shujin accuse Joker of being: “A convicted felon.” He’s the type of person who looks and acts unapproachable. He did a stint in juvie for something (I don’t know lol) and is now at Shujin to serve some sort of rehabilitation like Joker is. He has become a social outcast and is commonly seen practically running from the school when classes end. Where you’d usually find him is at a repair shop where he tends to work on all manner of mechanical or electronic device. Building and repairing them. But, no coding. He can do hardware, not software. Eventually something something something he gets pulled into the metaverse and awakens to his persona, Daedalus, and takes up the mantle of Artifice. From there Joker and the other thieves get to see that his “strong-but-silent” exterior is a result of an antisocial nature and he’s actually very talkative to the people he considers friends. He’s got a dry with and a hell if a lot of sarcasm. Usually it’s Ryuji or Ann dragging him out to places “against his will” (he loves them and enjoys spending time with them. Don’t lie to yourself) But he does get along well with Haru as they both favor the heavier weapons and more aggressive aspect of fighting. He fights with a pair of gauntlets that allows him to both punch and grapple enemies to his hearts content.

- My Hero/BNHA

I gotta get better at giving these characters actual names and not just WIP names or code names/titles. Here is the Rhythm Hero: Melodist. Quirk: Rhythm. Anyone ever played guitar hero or rock band? Maybe DDR? Thats his quirk. If he is listening to or playing music and performs an action in time with the notes being played, he gets a boost to whatever physical action it is. Running in time with the down beat of a song lets him run faster for longer. If he throws a punch or kick with a cymbal crash it hits harder. Etc. He operates in a similar manner to Presentation Michael or Jirou in he is both a performer and a hero. His defining feature is his combat guitar support gear. Because, c’mon, laying out a nasty power chord them slamming the guitar over some chump’s head is just cool.

- One Piece

This one I technically have two. But, one is a DnD character for a one piece based campaign me and my friends are playing. The first (again, with no actual name) I just call “the Captain.” (Real original, tsar) He’s not too fleshed out beyond how I would expect him in combat. I’ve dual wields a cutlas and pistol/blunderbuss in a very fluid kinda watery grace. If you’ve played Hyrule warriors and have seen Tetra’s move-set, that’s what I’m basing this off of. That’s about it. He’s got the traditional pirate aesthetic of the tricorn hat and his captains coat being worn off his shoulders like is commonplace in one piece. And he’s got a bandana around his neck. (I need to do more work for this guy lol)

- Legend of Zelda

The sheikah are followers of the blood of the goddess. Chosen to be aids and advisors and even sometimes guardians for those who bear the blood of the goddess. Usually this takes the form of Impa and her various lives’ relationships with their select Zelda’s. But, they go all the way back to being in the service of the actual goddess herself, as shown from both Skyward Sword and things seen in the Hyrule Historia. My thought was to have a character from that time period be basically an everlasting archive of the history of Hyrule. A sheikah honored with the boon of being a reliquary of hyrule’s stories and the stories of its great heroes. Never really getting involved and always in the outskirts of everything. But, he will step in to offer aid and guidance from the past where he can to the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero. He’d stand in a similar regard to the likes of the Deku Tree, Jabun, Levias, the ocean king, the various dragons, etc. a timeless individual who is a whole host of knowledge that is willing to grant that knowledge if you know what to ask for. Predictably, no name for him, either. (Get your shit together, Tsar)

- Marvel Comics

Specifically the comics. I fell out of love with the MCU a bit before infinity war came out. The guy is kinda blending of the hulk/Bruce banner and Wally west from DC. Wally/kid-flash/the third flash saw what Barry Allen was able to accomplish and figured out how to replicate the incident that gave him his powers, getting some for his own and becoming the first kid-flash before inheriting the mantle of the scarlet speedster for himself. That’s the same general framework for my guy. He saw what banner did and was capable of as hulk and set out to try and replicate it (just, y’know, minus the setting off and getting caught in the blast radius of what basically amounts to a turbo-nuclear bomb). Boom! Another member to be added to the hulk family. Of course he wouldn’t have the same skillset/power set as the hulk. But, certainly similar. Each hulk has their own general schtick that helps set them off from the green Goliath. Even Hulk has different capabilities based on what run there is (Worldbreaker, Professor Hulk, Joe Fixit, etc). So, my guy’s schtick was kinda a half-inverse fusion of red hulk and abomination. As red hulk gets angrier, he gets hotter. The energy welling up inside of him and quite literally burning through his skin. So the inverse of that is getting colder. More frosty. An endothermic reaction rather than exothermic. Then add in some amphibious/aquatic traits like abomination has and you get my guy. A hulk situated for frozen tundras and the deep sea. No name for him beyond “blue hulk guy.”

Basically every other character I would have either has roots as a DnD character who has been manipulated to fit other franchises or is just a self insert for a franchise that has no definitive characterization for the main character. Oh, my farmer in stardew valley is just me but slightly to the left and in a different font? Tell me more. Here’s a real old DnD character of mine who never really saw the light. Let’s change maybe three words in his backstory. That’ll make him fit right in in X-franchise.

Anyways, I could go more in depth with the tropes and character stories I have thought up for each of them, but I won’t.

Key Testing Methods, QA Practices, and Project Progress

Last August 17, 2024, no rebus puzzle to start off the session this time, but the subject matter was just as engaging. Our focus was on ensuring that software not only works but also meets high standards of reliability and usability. Testing is at the heart of this process, and our discussion began with two main types of testing Black Box Testing and White Box Testing. The Black Box Testing is all about functionality and the White Box Testing digs into the internal workings of the software. Both approaches have their strenghts, and a balanced combination helps ensure robust software. we also tackled about the regession testing, which is crucial after making changes to a software system, keeping this process efficient is where test automation comes in. Automating tests saves time and reduce human error. It's especially useful when projects grow larger, and more functionality needs to be tested repeatedly. We also discussed about Quality Assurance practices. QA isn't just about testing—it's a holistic approach to maintaining software quality throughout its development lifecycle. This includes adhering to coding standards, conducting peer reviews, and tracking issues as early as possible.

One of the highlights of the session is seen in the photos above, it was learning about User Acceptance Testing (UAT), particularly John Brook's Method. This method focuses on measuring the usability of software not only functions correctly but is also intuitive and easy to use.

Of course, after our discussion we are group into 6 groups and I am teamed up with Apus, Calalin, Diaz, Gonzales and Mahinay. We have our assessment or class activity every after our discussion. Engr. Suasola showed us 5 items on what to improved about the given UI and for the last item it was where we applied the John Brooke's Method and I am the one who was tasked to do that part. As a group, I can say that we did pretty well and everyone contributed to the answers we came up with.

Earlier, today, August 20, 2024, we had a consultation with Engr. Suasola regarding the revisions from our last consulation. the citation of the Appendix in the Requirements Gathering section was approved! However, we still have a few tweaks to make, specifically in our Data Normalization. During the consulation, we were also reminded of our deliverables before midterm and were informed that our presentation after midterm will be crucial in demonstration our progress. It's a lot to work on, but we're on the right track!

It's clear that testing and quality assurance are more than just final steps in the software development process. They are continuous efforts that start early and are vital to delivering a successful product. I found the exploration of different testing methods enlightening, and it deepened my understanding of how comprehensive testing strategies lead to higher-quality software.

With our project work moving forward, it's a busy but rewarding time in SDE. We're to refine our revisions and prepare for what's next!
