Hey can we talk about how typing quirks are genuinely inaccessible and hurt people with screen readers without being called ableist?? It isn't ableism to want to be able to read what people say and to ask them to provide a plain text alternative to their typing. It's actually kind of ridiculous that I have to ask for plain text when people [heavy typing quirk] "7yp3 l1k3 th1z" [PT: type like this. End PT], especially when it's in disability advocacy spaces (like cripplepunk)

Hello and welcome!
Today I'll be telling you about how using typing quirks is blatantly ableist and you should not do that in public spaces
Typing quirks are bad for the visually impaired and for people with dyslexia
This is because the text can merge together in a uncomfortable manner that is difficult to read but also for visually impaired or legally blind folks. Screen readers do not adapt to your weird little typing Quirk in fact, it's going to read it out as if it was a machine. Here's an example
H3llo ) You might read this as hello but screen readers only read. H 3 llo
Which is extremely difficult for the user. Trying to understand what you are communicating
SO PLEASE IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE DISABLED KNOCK IT OFF

ok hear me out on this
remember when fandom creators would take the whole 'england sees things that aren't real' canon and interpret that trait as him having a psychotic disorder?
and now we're saying that's cringe??
like yes it was usually done poorly. making light of psychotic/schizophrenic disorders or framing hallucinations as a silly goofy quirk in a 2012 fandom type of way is ultra ableist.
but when done in a respectful realistic way? there's a lot of potential there for neurodivergent arthur and i actually don't think it's cringe to take things like that and put a more serious spin on them. i think we should explore this more tbh.
btw having psychosis doesn't make you evil or 'crazy' it's more common than you'd assume and i think some of y'all are just ableist

hm someone should come up with a reason that adopting deliberate typing quirks is ableist or something, because it annoys me to read

If you're against self diagnosis, that's ableist. If you're against neopronouns and xenogenders, that's ableist (neurotypical allistics use those things as well, but it's commonly used as a tool by neurodivergent people to express their gender. Myself included).
If you preach about 'narcissistic abuse', you're being ableist. If you say autism isn't a disability, that's ableism (it's a spectrum disorder for a reason!) if you fakeclaim people, that's fucking ableist.
If you use a crazy font or typing quirk and don't provide plain text translations, that's ableist, and so is not adding banner IDs for your DNI banners and similar stuff. Edit for this one: if you can't do these things for any reason, that isn't being ableist; I mostly had people who refuse to do these things cuz it'll ruin their 'aesthetic' in mind.
Feel free to add on.

★ ៸៸៸ CH. QUIRKS 2 ╱ post ❜ ✸ ៸ !?!
The problem with character quirks is that if overused, and done badly, what could be a fun and memorable way to distinguish one character from another can quickly become grating for the reader and stop them from wanting to turn the page.
★ ! AVOID THESE ❪ 🎧 ❫ ៸ !?!
# ៸ steer clear of clichés. Some character quirks and certain words have been overdone to the point of being farcical (although, if writing satire or a genre where readers expect certain tropes, go to town with the cheese!).
# ៸ avoid stereotypes. Racist, sexist, ableist, or any other type of stereotypical observations are not quirks. Mental health issues and disabilities are not quirks. Think about why you are giving certain characters a unique trait, how it fits into the plot, and try to be original with it.
# ៸ don't overdo it. If all your characters are ever so quirky it will detract from the story. It's important to create unique characters, yes, but each one doesn't have to be weird and kooky. Sometimes having a fall guy, a straight and serious foil, can enhance the hero's quirkier traits.
★ ! PLAN IT ❪ 🎧 ❫ ៸ !?!
# ៸ think about what you're trying to say. Every character in your story should look and act a certain way for a reason. So imagine your cast, (create a vision board on Pinterest if it helps with physical features), and ask yourself why they look and behave the way they do.
# ៸ make a list of your characters' quirks. Try to be original, amusing, or endearing. Don’t match a quirk with a character for the sake of it, make sure it’s relevant to who they are, what they are trying to achieve, or to the outcome of the story.
# ៸ make your characters rounded. Ensure their name, backstory, and how they interact with the rest of the characters matches their personality and quirks.
# ៸ remember quirks are a reflection of a character's disposition. Think about their mental state, their personality, their backstory, and their constant state of mind.
Here Are Some Ideas For Character Quirks:
# ៸ physical quirks.
★ a birthmark
★ wears braces
★ tall / short
★ tattoos / piercings
★ keeps dying their hair a different color
★ unusual hair color
★ noticeable scar
★ walking habits
★ sleeps in a strange position
★ avoids eye contact
★ sits extremely straight
★ laughs behind their mouth
★ claps to accentuate each word
★ moves arms and hands a lot when talking
★ does little dances when happy
★ raspy voice
★ talkative
★ sings when speaking
★ they clear their throat before speaking
★ hums all the time
★ says ‘err’ or other fillers a lot
★ loud talker/quiet talker
# ៸ behavioral quirks.
★ obsessive cleaning
★ tying their hair up
★ sleeves always rolled up
★ always chewing their lip
★ cracking knuckles
★ extremely loyal
★ people pleaser
★ unnecessarily rude
★ fusses over people
★ makes their friends gifts
★ chews their nails
★ twirls their hair
★ uses the same word over and over
★ swears a lot (creative swear words are the most fun)

pro endos keep coming into my askbox saying ‘omg you called not translating typing quirks when asked ableist when you are anti endo’ like. You ARE ableist. Same person hates trans people?? I reported them
Just a fair warning that people that use screen readers are around and might have trouble reading a typing quirk.

I have a question, I see people say sometimes that typing quirks can be (not always) involuntary and some people can’t translate theirs at all, I’m photosensitive so can’t read it at all if it’s got numbers or anything. I’m just wondering why some people can switch between typing quirks and regular and others can’t? If there’s a reason we know? Genuine question I hope it doesn’t sound rude
(First off, lemme say: none of this is directed at you personally, I just have very intense feelings on the subject. I appreciate the question though!! /gen)
So, this is probably pretty controversial to say, but I genuinely believe that all typing quirks are translatable. Anyone who acts otherwise is being, frankly, ableist.
Typing quirks pose a whole slew of problems for those with low/impaired vision, I/DDs, TBI patients, dyslexia, photosensitivity like you mentioned, etc.
I get that they come naturally for some, and they require effort to translate, but it's just thinly veiled inconsideration and rudeness to imply they're completely involuntarily and there's Absolutely No Way to fix that issue.
More often than not, I'd argue that they could be fixed by the typist themselves. But, let's play devil's advocate: even IF it's in a circumstance where they can't, someone else in their system or server or whatever can do it for them.
Typing quirks in public spaces (or in places where disabled people are present) should be required to be translated, full stop.
Accessibility and accountability do not exist on a sliding scale depending on how convenient it is for ableds.

I couldn't find a clean one, but r/syscringe faker bingo!!
Tumblr media
**THE THINGS UP THERE ARE NOT OURS**
Ours:
Complete: Free
Sorta (+ explanation):
"r/syscringe is ableist" -- yes and no. I'm not gonna get into it but there are posts out there and you can find them yourself
"claims to form alters from hyperfixations" -- depends what you mean. We do have alters from hyperfixations because they brought us comfort, yes, but they spilt due to stress/trauma. I really just don't understand what you mean by "form"
"Has alters with typing quirks" -- sorta??? we have this one dude who just,,,hates the english language and does not spell things properly. Could he? we have no idea. But he doesn't use double letters and typically replaces letters like "s" "z" "c" "k" (letters that sound the same) with x's so idk
"source trauma" -- again, depends what you mean. source trauma itself is not directly real, but stands in for real trauma, so the brain can process it in a manner it sees as being safe. But there is still emotional validity and value in the part's perception that these pseudomemories happened.
"there's multiple people living in my head" -- we say it as a joke but couldn't tell if op meant this seriously or joking so we put it in the sorta
"erm, i prefer the term headmate!" -- we tend to prefer "parts" because that's what we are, parts of a whole. But it could be just the "anything but an alter" thing too so we put it in sorta

just a reminder that if you use a typing quirk you're inherently ableist. Yes, you can control it be for real. there is no reason for you to use one. If you acknowledge that typing quirks are harmful and still use one you're ableist and a fucking cunt. okay, you do that but you translate it. woo hoo. That means you know that they suck and you decide to use it anyways cause you can't bear to type actual words. translations still make it harder for visually impaired people. translations have to come before the quirk. it adds an extra step of having to figure out where the quirk is and stopping the screenreader before it reaches that. but none of you care about that cause you don't actually want to listen to disabled people you can type normally. i can't see normally.

Radshits claim they're not ableist and that we who are actually disabled are the ableist ones but their blogs are always the least accessible on this site. Flashing gifs, blinkies everywhere, unreadable fonts, zero contrast, eyestrain, untranslated typing quirks, 90% of their text is emojis, you name it. Really fucking ironic lmfao
