So, in my... fourth? Reread of UnOrdinary, I took note of something.

‼️Obligatory spoiler warning for season one‼️

throughout the entire story, Arlo is almost always standing up straight and tall. He usually has his hands in his pockets, shoulders back, chin up, and he is the tallest character in the entire series

This man exudes authority— every time he’s on screen, it’s clear that Arlo is in charge. This is true even long after John defeats him. When he’s not standing, he’s sitting upright with straight posture, on a chair or couch. (Dude even sleeps sitting upright?? With his chin down but otherwise flawless posture??)

However — once John’s Joker arc is about to hit its climax, Arlo realizes that he is entirely powerless. John is going to go after Remi, and Arlo is realizing that he’s out of options.

Here he’s laying down. Not only is he laying down, he’s laying on the ground. The sight of Arlo laying down like this was unusual enough to make me go ...huh. He then proceeds to speedrun his character development, realize that he is at fault, tries to solve the problem by owning up, fails, and becomes even more powerless.

Several chapters later, Arlo is sitting on the roof, when Elaine comes and stands next to him.

Arlo is sitting on the ground, hunched over. A sharp contrast to his usual posture. When we learned about cinematic techniques in my film class, one of the first things we were taught is that the person placed higher on the screen in the shot is the person who has the power in that scene. This is interesting because Elaine doesn’t have any power either... in fact, she actually has much less.

Now, films are different from comics in that film is very high budget with many people working on every aspect, so everything is very intentional, whereas comics are less tight and things sometimes will just end up a certain way by accident. However, I don’t think that this is the case here— rather that Elaine was placed there to Juxtapose Arlo, and emphasize how low he’s sunken, despite having no power herself.

I really want the negative parental/parental adjacent relationships in the cast of unordinary to be explored more. cause like. at the moment it seems a lot like God-Tier families are absolute shit. Like John’s mum ran away from home because they wouldnt let her be with William. But also. 2 of them are physically abusive.

We see Sera’s negative relationship with her mum explored when she gets suspended. Her parents cut her off from the outside world and from her friends so she is forced to do what they want, and just in general her mum treats her horribly.

But also, i want to draw your attention to the similarities between this panel:

and this one.

Sera’s mum and valerie are the same type of shit

I desperately want to see Arlo free himself from val, like how Sera managed to get her parents to leave her alone. She treats him horribly to get what she wants and despite how some people think, she doesn’t care about him. If i could find the panel where she says ‘i have other nieces and nephews’ then that would prove it.

What do you think the main uno characters would look for in a romantic partner personality wise?

Uuuuuuuuhhhhmmmm I’m not super into romance but let me think

Arlo- can’t imagine he’d be into romance to be honest. I like holdlo but even that was irony that spiraled into unironically liking it. I think he would want someone he can boss around. Possess even.

Sera- too busy dealing with her friends insanity you have to be normal and well adjusted. She’ll fucking leave you.

John- have to have a decent amount of empathy. I think he would be too disturbed by someone who doesn’t.

Remi- Also needs to have a lot of empathy. Someone who can tolerate her periods of being a little obsessed with something. A bit of an anchor type

Blyke- Has to be about as passionate about justice and morality as he is. Also because I can’t imagine he dated someone other than Isen and Remi so I guess they would have to tolerate that he cares about them way more.

Isen- ugh this one’s hard. Wants someone who can take a joke and he can mess around with a little. Needs to be his friend and not just some person he’s dating.

I do my best to try to match my partners length for length in replies. But at the same time, I prefer quality over quantity. We can always discuss type of replies (Para, chat-style, short and sweet, etc) before each roleplay. I used to write creative stories/fanfiction so sometimes I can get overboard with descriptions. Feel free to poke me and tell me to tone it down if my replies are outrageous and you can't keep up.

If a thread starts from an ask (ie: meme or prompt) I will most likely transfer it to a text post with a title and a link to the original ask for organization and the easy ability to "remove old replies" to shrink the length of the post.

Literally insane to me how small the general webtoon fandom is outside of the webtoon app itself (and maybe reddit??)

I've talked to multiple people irl who LOVE reading webtoon, but the online community is borderline threadbare ! Most people on Tumblr have no IDEA who our blorbos are! I've checked tags for some fairly popular webtoon and it was like visiting that Tatooine town in the Mandalorian where there are 5 citizens total, but only if you also count the Mayor, the sheriff, and the deputy.

Lore Olympus is the most popular webtoon and has under 2,000 fics on AO3. Lookism has roughly 1,000. Unordinary, THEE legacy webtoon, only has 600, and it's been running for almost 7 years now. It has nearly 6M subscribers and still gets 50K+ likes each week. It's not dead by any means.

I guess it doesn't help that each webtoon is its own micro ecosystem and once a webtoon ends, that ecosystem typically fades with it. But webtoons can go on runs longer than most shows on streaming services, and those fandoms burn hot and bright even if only for the first month of a new season drop.

By comparison, webtoon fans are largely casual about their enthusiasm, even if they're highly invested in the story or characters. From my experience, only the most passionate try to connect with other fans online. But when you're passionate about one webtoon, I suppose it's hard to show constant excitement about the 20+ other stories one might keep up with. Still, between the 85 million monthly readers, you'd think each major webtoon would at least have a dedicated fan base (meaning people who regularly post theories, thoughts, fics, and fanart) of mere thousands outside of the app.

One exception for this is that Batman webtoon? It actually trends on Tumblr every now and again. But it doesn't count, because Batman has a built in fandom who'll eat up and yell in the streets about any content where he's a decent dad.

People who read romance webtoon all tend to read the same comics, and actively understand the references to other popular romance comics (Trashta, Team Seojun, SLS), so you'd think there'd be a greater sense of unity. More people actively searching out others to discuss with and posting their thoughts online and not just in that webtoon's comment section.

I mean, C'MON girls!!! Millions of people log into that app like everyday!!! WHERE is the community?? WHERE is the fanart?? WHERE is the fanfic?? WHY does Odd Girl Out only have 7 fanfics?? WHY are there like 2 people on Twitter posting about Weak Hero?? Head in hands fr

So, I don't understand what's going on in the Pedro Pascal fandom here on tumblr, but it seems like every new fandom I join goes up in smoke almost immediately, everyone even vaguely polite fleeing for their sanity.

I already felt mild discomfort posting my work, it feels like daily I have to block another "stop writing age gaps!" or "stop writing meek, shy main characters" post, mostly tagged with Pedro's works (or The Boys, which is hilarious,) and it's so discouraging to know my particular tastes are still under attack after 15-odd years.

I know there's an audience for them, because everyone who's actually good at fanfic is still posting them, but I just don't have the confidence to bare my soul for Tumblr anymore.

If anyone is still interested in Unordinary Type, I'm going to be exclusively posting it to Ao3, under the name FromADenOfBeasts. You'll know you're there when you see Pokemon, Harvest Moon, and D.gray-man as my other fandoms.

Maybe I'll come back and post the rest here when it's done, but while I'm in the process of writing it I'd prefer to stick to Ao3.
