Harry despised the nickname Louis had given him when they’d first met nine months prior. Little Lamb to the slaughter, Louis had said mockingly.

“Probably not. There’s only so many people who can drown on dry land before it gets fishy.”

“Satan.” He counters, same tone coupled with a glare and a pair of arms crossed over his chest.

Louis used to be good friends with Harry, until he woke up alone and immortal with no one to blame but The Devil himself.

Struggling with grieving and depression since his dad died, Harry has never felt so alone. It’s too much to cope with on his own, but he feels like a burden when he tries to open up with people.

But then the first one is caught. A faun, that little Meg from around the corner swears has attacked her in the woods, and everyone comes to the marketplace to see the faun be hanged for its crimes. Louis doesn’t want to go, but at the same time, he finds himself unable to stay away. Not when this proves what he’s wanted to believe all along, that magic is real.

Louis is twenty when he starts working at the prison. His fascination for supernatural creatures had turned into something most closely resembling loathing over the years, due to the many stories of their evildoing, and although he still doesn’t believe in hanging them for their crimes, he does believe in keeping the town safe. In making sure that his siblings get to grow up without fear of being kidnapped or hurt. As the oldest son, it feels like his duty to make sure that no creature in the wide area will ever pose a threat to anyone.

He liked to savour his meals. He could get at least two evenings out of a bag that way, which worked very well for Harry’s schedule. His wine glass was in front of him on the counter, and he was ready to pour.

Today will be no different. You know it’ll do you good.” Harry sucked his bottom lip between his teeth, torn. In the end, it was an offer he was too weak to resist. “So…do you want to? Little taste?” “Yeah,” Harry rasped out, “please.”

Or, Harry is a vampire that comes home one night, grappling with the darkness that comes with being one. Louis offers him unwavering love, acceptance and the one thing he needs but is reluctant to ask for; permission to bite for the sake of comfort and safety seeking.

Episode 4

Royal wedding montage. No, Samantha Cohen didn’t tell you some weird Rainbow Fish story. That did not happen.

Voices of journalists talking about how amazing she is and how she is going to change the family for the better. I guess the royal coverage is good…as long as they say nice things.

“I don’t know how I was so calm.” Drugs, Meghan. It was drugs.

Wedding crowds montage. Same song as Four Weddings and a Funeral because these two think they are living a rom com. Celebrities attending the wedding. International coverage. Amal and George and the Beckhams. Will and Harry. No one mentions that it was Wallis Simpson’s car. She didn’t talk about the “real” wedding three days before.

There was no expectation, Harry. You were supposed to get married in Craithie Kirk because you were a man of the people. That was the first story that came out.

CWK talks about the dress. Doesn’t mention the Commonwealth flowers in the veil. No mention of the tiara drama or the egg debacle either.

Bold choice going with the vampire bride shot. Yes, KC was important to you Meg. He single-handedly saved your train wreck wedding. Lots of discussion about the Kingdom Choir and no one mentions that they perform at all the Commonwealth events.

They sold their wedding pics, just like Peter. They are soooooo tacky. They laugh about cutting the cake with the sword. That wedding cake was truly symbolic, a priceless collection of gold pedestals propping up a mediocre confection. Her mom ditched her for the celebs. That is hilarious. Of course she did.

Interesting that Meghan hasn’t looked happy once during this whole documentary, but she sounds truly joyful when talking about the wedding. That was the highlight of her life.

Kate’s face in the wedding pictures is everything. Says it all. I wonder if Meghan sold a Kate pic. I haven’t seen one yet. Never mind, I just rewound and, sure enough, she did.

Interesting how they are appropriating narratives—she’s a hugger, writing in a new character, modernizing—that were created by the tabloids. Every single word this Archewell guy is saying was written by Camilla Tominey, Andrew Morton, or Valentine Low. He is parroting the royal experts Harry was mocking last episode.

Train trip with the Queen. Why does she wear a necklace in some shots, but not in others? They are splicing different interviews and using filters to make it look line one interview. This section was edited into incomprehensibility after the death of the Queen.

Grenfell. LOL, she makes it sound like she was in the UK when the tragedy happened. Wild. I like the Grenfell ladies but why are they spending time on this and not covering her current charities?

Bitching about Nott Cott, which actually looks super cute. “I don’t know who lived here before.” Your brother, the heir, lived there before, Harry. You know that.

That’s how she decorated it? Pottery Barn circa 2001? No wonder her domestic goddess career never took off. All of this just to upgrade from 2000s Pottery Barn to 2014 Restoration Hardware? But….they weren’t living in Nott Cott. They rented a Cotswolds farmhouse before the wedding and lived there until moving to Frog Cott. That’s why all these pics are of them getting dressed. They were just using Nott Cott to prep for London events.

Wait, did they just bitch about their multi-million cottage in Kensington Palace being too small right after the Grenfell segment? Yes, they did. Wow.

Pregnancy. She sold her sonogram pictures. Australia. You weren’t showing already, Megs. There was no bump. Cue shots with no bump. This is epic gaslight. We can clearly see she’s not showing, but they flat out say she was.

Lol, she wasn’t that popular. Her polls peaked at 41% net approval after the wedding and dropped like rocks. And Australia wasn’t the turning point, Lucy. It was her dad talking to the media all summer long. Isn’t Lucy Harper a pr person? Shouldn’t she be able to interpret polling data? Headlines about how popular she was…including the 2018 Time’s Most Influential List, which is hilarious because they were sandwiched between Donald Trump and Saudi Arabia’s MSB. Yeah, the royals were really jealous of that. OMG, they show Meghan’s covers and its…Woman’s Day and Hello! Canada. One of the headlines is “Freddy Mercury’s Secret Wife.”

Wait, now he’s happy because the media put Meghan on the front pages? They have a very strange relationship with the media. Hold on, he thinks Meghan outshone The Queen? Seriously?????? He thinks the frumpy brocade dress outshone The Queen? I remember calling that a hater cover because Meghan looked so terrible in it. No one thought she overshadowed The Queen. Literally, no one.

Archewell guy speaking again. He seems to think that the royals, who were desperately trying to cover up the epic disaster of the Australian tour—which included insulting the Australian government house, exaggerating an incident with a faulty heater, assaulting an embassy employee, walking out of a United Nations event, making a staffer cry in front of a reporter, wearing jewelry gifted by an allegedly murderous despot, and trolling her father by saying he hadn’t paid for her college—were jealous of how “well” she did in Australia. This is delusional.

Lol, now they are bitching about avocados. It wasn’t the avocados. It was her dad. They just jumped from blaming the royals for the bad press to blaming racism. First The Queen was jealous, then the staff were scared, then the media was racist and giving Kate better press…I’m getting whiplash. Pick a villain, guys! I can’t follow this argument at all. The Queen was upset because Meghan stole her Woman’s Day cover with Freddie Mercury’s secret wife so she leaked stories about Meghan’s favorite perishable fruit and the evil tabloids turned that into the racialized avocados of death? Whaaaaaat????? I love how Harry throws up his hands and says “well, if you can’t see it, I can’t do anything for you.” See what? None of this makes any sense.

BTW, they used the “Hurricane Meghan” headlines even though Meghan told Oprah she hadn’t heard about that. The Oprah interview also implied she never knew about the bump-holding headlines and they used those in the documentary too. Oprah read them to her and Meghan acted as if it was the first time she was hearing about it. The only headlines Meghan, according to their statements during the Oprah interview, was supposedly aware of were the “made Kate cry story” and the avocado story, and she laughed at the avocado story.

Walkabout in Liverpool. A member of the public scolded her about her dad. See? The problem was her dad. Harry and Meghan, however, blame family lies and the tabloids. Her dad was giving interviews right and left, and people were watching him in real time, complaining about how he was treated. No one in the palace was leaking this. No one was lying about it. He was out there, giving interviews to anyone with a couple of bucks because he wanted to explain that he did actually pay for her school. Her sister was doing the same thing.

And here’s the Diana 2.0 stuff. Wait, she was going to kill herself…over the racialized avocados of death? I paused to re-read the transcript of the Oprah interview because I remembered the suicidal ideation story as being a lot more sympathetic than “the Kate story and the avocados made me want to end it all.” In that interview, they start with the tabloid stories, but then Oprah asks her whether she felt lonely and she talks about Harry working all the time and being all alone. She talks about not being able to leave the house and see her friends and also about the tours being exhausting and having to smile through it all. She also claims there were talks about Archie not being a prince and not getting security and how that was stressing her out. Then she talks about people being concerned about Archie’s skin color and then she talks about her suicidal ideation. That kind of emotional build-up is what Oprah brings to the table. That’s why she gets the big bucks. Here, they just jump from “our Australian tour was super successful” to “mean tabloid stories about Kate and avocados” to “I just didn’t want to live anymore,” and it’s not as powerful, particularly since the behind-the-scenes pictures they keep showing us are all happy pictures.

Also, we skipped over the big show of support at Sandringham. And Doria can also do the “one tear, left eye” trick. It must be genetic.

She wasn’t allowed to get help? Girl, they knew you were nuttier than a fruitcake. They would have sent you to a shrink in a hot minute. And they weren’t afraid about how it would make the institution look. Harry admitted to going to therapy and it went fantastic. James Middleton went to therapy too. They put up pics of Megs looking sad…and they are all from events that happened afterwards.

The households separated because of leaks? Bullying isn’t even going to get mentioned? No, it isn’t, and neither is the big social media campaign KP did to support Meghan.

I’m blown away by the fact that all this drama is about a story about bridesmaids’ dresses. The Oprah Winfrey interview was motivated by this one story about making Kate cry. The Archetypes podcast was about the story about making Kate cry. They made a six-hour Netflix documentary about a story about making Kate cry. There is now an entire subgenre of royal coverage based on Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid attire. This one story has been living rent-free in Harry and Meghan’s heads since Fall 2018.

Harry keeps talking about trading stories and not playing the game. He totally planted the Rose Hanbury affair story as revenge for the “made Kate cry” story. Absolutely,

Happy Nott Cott Christmas. She wasn’t allowed to text photos? Lol, you weren’t texting photos bc you were saving them for Netflix.

People Magazine article. I guess these were the friends working with the magazines. Wasn’t their privacy super important? Weren’t they in danger if their identities were revealed? That was the argument that was presented under oath to the court. Now it turns out she was just saving the reveal for the Netflix special. Baby shower. OMG, Amal Clooney making floral arrangements, wtf? Backlash because of course.

They are gifted Frogmore Cottage. Archie’s birth. Vintage footage about royal births. She had a long-standing relationship with her UK doctor? How? Seriously, how? They couldn’t do the photocell at Portland Hospital? Didn’t Fergie do it at Portland? Twice?

Birth announcement drama. The problem wasn’t that you broke protocol, Meghan. The problem was that CBS got the exclusive and you lied to the press about the birth. They bring in academics to say it was about racism because of course.

Archie. They took a picture of the nanny with the baby in a mud cloth carrier, lol.

South Africa with Archie. They couldn’t do a hospital photocall with the baby, but now they are taking him on tour. Doria just said “it’s not the institution’s baby, it’s her baby,” but they are taking him on an official tour. They can’t be expected to serve their child on a silver platter for literally two minutes, but they can take him on a week-long tour. I had to double-back and check the dates because I felt this wasn’t nearly as jarring and contradictory when it happened, and it wasn’t. The tour was several months after the birth and they had already taken the baby (who was supposedly too young to fly to Balmoral for the summer) to Ibiza. They way they presented it in the documentary, however, sounded ridiculous.

BTW, no coverage of the Vogue magazine, Smartworks capsule collection, the summer vacations at Elton’s house, the private planes, etc…. All of these were roundly criticized (well, not the Smartworks capsule) and yet the only story that matters is the Kate story.

Lol, the Archewell guy just admitted the royals were afraid Meghan would cause an international row during this tour. Not afraid that she would embarrass the royal family with her activism, noooooo. Afraid she would cause an international row.

Tutu. Wasn’t this footage intrusive two episodes ago? Make up your minds, guys! Tom Bradby. Is she trying to spin the interview as an oopsie due to exhaustion? Is she saying Tom tricked her? She really thinks people are stupid. Also, she takes no responsibility for anything, not even the Uber-narcissistic “I trusted too much.” She’s not even capable of that.

{Edited: Apparently Harry is doing another interview with Bradby. Guess he didn’t really trick them then.]

Astroturfed supportive hashtag. Guess her huge investment in Twitter bots paid off. LOL, my kid squints at the screen and says “all the tweets have the same timestamp.” Yes, they do.

Oh, the Diana footage is a bad idea. You can tell she was trying to act like Diana during the Africa interview (so much eyeliner). They really do think she’s Diana though, and they planned their tours (Australia, Africa, big meeting with African leader, big tour with baby) to bolster that impression. It’s interesting that worthy projects (Smartworks capsule collection, Vogue, Morocco girls’ meetings Ireland tour, dog shelter) that would make Meghan look good, but don’t support the Diana narrative are simply not mentioned. The India hygiene project is not featured in the documentary, but the Diana-like pictures in traditional dress are.

You Don’t Own Me for closing credits. Hahaha. Harley Quinn music. So appropriate. The music in the last three documentaries is better than the music in the first three.

Husband and group chat both discuss the Diana 2.0 stuff. She really thinks she is Diana and the documentary is trying to present her as Diana. Everyone agrees that she is no Diana. The psychologist thinks she should have worn more eyeliner. The lawyer tells her that eyeliner wasn’t the problem. There isn’t enough eyeliner in the world to turn her into Diana. Everyone thinks the music is good. Much texting about how much the tiny cottage cost. Someone looks it up on Zillow and it’s an insane number. Many “but my palace was sooooo small” jokes. Many comments about a KP cottage, no matter how small, being much classier than a California McMansion. Many comments about the Archewell guy sounding slimy.

In The Wings (T, 1.6k) - this short is so gentle and healing I could cry, I’m enchanted by Draco’s soft pov and those vivid ballet descriptions, so very dreamy!

Ballet has been a path to healing for Draco after the war. Now, it's his final performance in the starring role, and his boyfriend is in the audience for the first time.

To Make A Way (E, 5.4k) - the fuck buddies cinema AU you didn’t know you needed! Sexy af mixing casual and sweet, organic slow burn and a gorgeous contemplative tone underneath. It’s about the aching!

When Harry finds Draco in the back row of the cinema, he doesn't mean to accidentally befriend him. Or fuck him. Or catch feelings. The thing is, Draco only does casual.

Glowing (T, 9.7k) - the softest vampire cottagecore domesticity you’ll read today, this made my heart melt. So darling and intimate, it felt like I was right there beside them. Flatmates by Cav just hits differently, I’m telling you!

Harry's lived alone and vampiric in his cottage for ages, until a long-lived Draco Malfoy suddenly shows up to answer an advertisement Harry had practically forgotten he'd put in the Prophet. Cue soft blood drinking, quiet nights of reading and crocheting, and Harry thinking that maybe--just maybe--he might not be so alone anymore.

Bridges (E, 16k) - ultimate comfort read with travel roommates exploring Budapest, Harry exploring his sexuality, soft contemplation and poignant conversations. I love how easily this fic flows and the atmosphere is 👨‍🍳💋

Harry and Draco are on a trip to Budapest to help with Kingsley's re-election, but that's the boring bit. More interesting: Harry Potter is changing his Tinder preferences to include men.

The Hardest Hue To Hold (M, 17k) - another incredible love story set outside the UK with a charming academic background and fascinating characters. I love how Cav included different mythology references, and the honest, delicate take on Harry’s trans journey.

Harry needs to get the hell out of England. So he sets up a teaching assistantship in America, hops on a plane, and heads off to a fresh start. Except there’s a familiar face among the university faculty, and it’s really not the familiar face that Harry wanted. Or at least, it’s not who Harry wanted at first.

Inertia (E, 83k) - almost 100k of delicious 8th year enemies to friends to lovers, I live for the angsty slow burn and the exquisite coming of age vibes. Soft and healing and full of hope!

It’s three months after the war. Harry has already mucked up all his plans. Draco is no longer the prince of Slytherin house. And they sure as hell didn’t both mean to go back to Hogwarts at the same time. Cue snarking, long conversations…and unexpected snogging.

When Riccardo Freda bet that he could complete a movie in twelve days and came up short, Mario Bava, already serving as the film’s cinematographer, was tagged to close out the directing duties. The result is I Vampiri (1957, Lust of the Vampire), an atmospheric, gothic film that carries the earmarks of Freda’s skill and Bava’s promise. There’s no “vampire” as such, but the shadow of Elizabeth Bathory looms large over this tale. Your Classic Era Grue Crew, with guest Bill Milligan, are wowed by much of I VAMPIRI, not the least of which is the special effects. There is much to talk about.

Looking (2014-2016): Three best friends living in San Francisco share the nuances and complexities of contemporary gay relationships as they explore a variety of options, both in love and in life. They are unified by their close bond, but their search for happiness and intimacy has taken them on separate paths.

Interview With the Vampire (2022-Present): In the year 2022, the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac lives in Dubai and seeks to tell the story of his life or afterlife to renowned journalist Daniel Molloy. Beginning in early 20th-century New Orleans, Louis' story follows his relationship with the vampire Lestat du Lioncourt and their formed family, including teen fledgling Claudia. Together, the vampire family endures immortality in New Orleans and beyond. As the interview continues in Dubai, Molloy discovers the truths beneath Louis' story. ⭐️

Book Review: The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires (2022)

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix, published in 2020, is a New York Times bestseller. It’s the most recent of Hendrix’s long line of horror novels, which have been applauded by a Stoker Award, Library Journal, the Chicago Public Library, and more. A quick IMDb search also confirms that there is a TV adaptation “in development”.

TSBCGSV in particular has received positive feedback from almost everyone. One Kirkus Reviews article says, “Fans of smart horror will sink their teeth into this one,” and I couldn’t agree more. The story revolves around five middle-class stay-at-home moms, with personalities that couldn’t get further apart, who decide to start a book club together. Not a stuffy book club, but one where they could read “trashy true crime books,” (23). When a new neighbor moves into their well-to-do neighborhood, they all take notice – Patricia Campbell especially, and not for good reasons. The story follows her struggle to convince her friends, husband, and the police that something is very, very wrong with James Harris... until she is finally forced to take things into her own hands.

I first heard of TSBCGSV on BookTok, but only really committed to reading it after a failed book club incident (which, luckily, had nothing to do with the quality of the book, nor was it a Marjorie Fretwell situation). The most endearing thing I find about this story, before the story itself even starts, is the author’s note. Hendrix honors his mother and all ‘housewives’ with this story, “…pit[ting] Dracula against my mom. As you’ll see, it’s not a fair fight,” (8). A story that highlights the strength of the often-overlooked middle-aged women who raised us? Yes, yes, yes. Honestly, when my short-lived book club realized around Chapter 15 that this was written by a man (none of us bothered to Google ‘Grady Hendrix’ previously), we were all shocked. The attention to detail and the accuracy of the female friendships and perspective made us all certain in our assumptions that the author was a woman. This, I think, is a quality to be admired in Mr. Hendrix, who can clearly inhabit his character’s minds so, so well.

In fact, the more I dove into who Grady Hendrix was the more I felt I had been missing out. He was one of the founders of the New York Asian Film Festival? He’s written fourteen books, including a cookbook that he co-wrote with his wife? He used to be a journalist and has written articles for Playboy Magazine and The New York Post? He has a podcast on the “history of horror”? Who is this guy?

Unfortunately, I can’t answer that (yet). However, I can tell you about his latest novel. Before I dive into the spoilers-included section of this review, I feel obligated to give any unsuspecting potential readers of this book a trigger warning. Trigger warnings are a heavily debated topic of the creative writing community, which is why I don’t expect them as a given – and no reader should. However, if you are considering reading this book, and stumble upon this review first, I feel it’s my duty to give one now. There are heavy sexual tones and plot points in this book, and a lot of detailed, gory violence - sometimes those two things overlap. It’s chilling, shocking, and potentially triggering if unexpected.

~SPOILERS AHEAD~

Okay, now to talk about the actual book. My very first thoughts walking away from it: my expectations were absolutely not ready for the reality of this book. It was much more intense than I first expected, something the trigger warning above alludes to. I do think it could have been a little more fast-paced, as the first third of the book drags a little, but I suppose that’s the irritation of living in the South – nothing is fast. Though once it does pick up, it picks up quick. The sexual element of it was also unforeseen, especially since I wasn’t even sure going in if this book was actually going to be about vampires. But I don’t mind it – it reminds me of Salem’s Lot, which also contains heavy sexual overtones and a focus on children, but without the romantic B-plot that occasionally gets in the way.

Something I really love about this book is the diversity Hendrix presents. We get the stereotypical ragtag group of personality types: the tacky (Kitty), the Yankee feminist (Maryellen), the anxious worrywart (Grace), the overtly religious (Slick), and the overly polite Patricia. The real diversity of these characters appears under the surface: Kitty has money problems, Maryellen still defers to her husband, Grace is in an abusive relationship, Slick is a victim of sexual violence, and Patricia experiences a serious mental break. Furthermore, there is the racism and gentrification demonstrated via Francine and Mrs. Greene, both of whom prove to be some of the most important characters in the story in terms of driving the plot. All of these things are shown in the frame of the South in the ‘90s, meaning they’re subtle, hidden, and rarely called out into the light – perhaps like a vampire. I really appreciate Hendrix's handling of such heavy topics. He doesn't overdo it, but rather weaves it into each of the characters.

Another clever thing Hendrix does is sort TSBCGSV into sections, titled according to what book is being read in Patricia & Co’s book club. All the books used as section titles (Cry, the Beloved Country; Helter Skelter; The Bridges of Madison County; The Stranger Beside Me; Psycho; Clear and Present Danger; Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus; and In Cold Blood) correspond to the action or theme of the section. For example, in The Stranger Beside Me, Patricia catches James Harris in the act of feeding on a young girl in Six Miles. In Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus, the most sexual violence is dealt with, and Patricia and the others finally ‘kill’ James Harris. Patricia asks for a divorce, and Slick dies. The gender lines are starkly drawn in this second-to-last section, corresponding to the title of the book James Harris chose for his book club.

Most other online reviews are also positive. However, several reflect my own surprise at the direction this book took and the gender of the author. One Reddit thread called “Spoiler-Free Review: A Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix” is particularly unforgiving and sparks a somewhat heated debate in the comments. The OP talks about how their expectations were met for the first third of the novel, then it seemed as though the story went sideways. They think the book feels more like it’s set in the 1950s than the 1990s, because of the way the women are brushed off and presented as subordinate to their husbands. OP also didn’t like how and how much Hendrix wrote about sexual violence, particularly about children. They argue that he makes it seem “light”, something I personally disagree with, since the sexual violence in the story is the central motivator for the women to act. One commenter takes up for the book, voicing that Southern suburbia and real people are just as horrible and passive as portrayed by Hendrix. It feels like it’s more realistic to the 1950s? I couldn’t agree more. But often that’s the reality of it.

However, on one point I do agree with the OP Reddit user. There seems to be very little clarity and consistency on what powers James Harris has, other than charisma. The only thing seeming to be consistent with the ‘vampire’ trope is he survives off blood and is sensitive to light. The one thing everyone can agree on, though: we all expected something much lighter than the turn The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires took.

I am quite the fan of thrillers, Stephen King-esque, and Grady Hendrix has done a wonderful job of creating a goosebump-causing, blood-runs-cold, hair-standing-up story that sits right up there with Salem’s Lot, in my opinion. It could have been a little more fast-paced, sure, and I was surprised that it was a man choosing to write about the lives of five stay-at-home moms. But none of that took away from my enjoyment of the book, and the chills it sent down my spine. As always, let me know what you think in the notes.
