Hey there! Figured I'd finally make one of these in case anyone who stumbles on this blog wonders what it's all about.

As it says in my blog description, this is an online space where I can compile and organize imagery, info, and anything else that inspires me related to the novel I'm developing. At least that was the original motivation for making this, but I'm definitely wanting to post some original content surrounding the story and the characters in it soon! This imaginary world has been obsessing me for a few years now, and I'm honestly chomping at the bit to share it with others.

What the novel's about:

It's [going to be] a gothic/dark fantasy/folk horror/historical fiction novel set in regency Britain and centering around the concept of Halloween and its origins/meaning. Think Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell meets Over the Garden Wall. Kinda. Characters include a bratty aspiring sorcerer, a demonic changeling who wants to be human, a witch, a sin eater, and a handsome devil. Over the course of the plot the question of whether the spirit realm(s) and mortal world should be kept separate will be a source of conflict.

I've had some aspects of this story/characters in my head since I was 14, so it's super special to me!

About me:

I'm an artist, writer, and musician. This is my first time trying to write anything as involved as a novel. I'm having loads of fun with it, though. I love music and reading and history, particularly fashion history, and anything related to the supernatural. The title of my blog is a reference to a song by Echo & the Bunnymen (though I think it's actually an inaccurate lyric :P ).

omg okay thank you spruce

so I lined up really early to get barricade, right? I'm mutuals with a lot of people on twitter that I'd met before at gigs who were going to this one, and the roughly 10 or so of us had all agreed to queue for barricade so we were all in a group. our front of the line group had this running bit going on from really early in the morning where every time a car pulled into the lot one of us would go "holy shit is that wilbur soot?" and it'd be like a pickup truck or something lmao. it was so stupid but the more we did it the funnier it got

anyway flash forward to the afternoon. we're all tired and laying under this canopy firesnap bought to stay out of the sun. we hear a car pull up behind us and I have my back turned to it so I don't even bother to look, until someone goes "omg wilbur"

most of us think it's the bit again. firesnap was laying down and was just like "yeah sure"

then I turn around. and wilbur is sitting in the back of the uber that's like, right behind us.

once we all realized it was actually the band in the uber we all waved at them and I think that was when the guys realized they pulled too far forward (the band entrance to the venue was closer to the front than where the line was) and so the car reversed SO FAST to get away from us, it was so funny.

then as the band started climbing out of the car to get into the venue I noticed some people waiting further back in line behind our group were getting up like they were gonna try and run over to talk to them. so without thinking I stood up and just shouted "NO STAY BACK BE NORMAL" (maybe I said be chill or something like that I don't remember exactly) and held my hands out like chris pratt with the velociraptors in jurassic park 😭 everyone who was about to run forward just froze and stared at me and I glared at all of them until the band was in the venue. ngl I still don't know where that stern teacher voice came from.

a few minutes later I noticed a group waiting by the back entrance to the venue and it was very obvious a lot of them were trying to see if they could sneak pictures of the band as they got settled into the venue. so I walked over and was like "so are you guys trying to be creepy stalkers or what?" or something along those lines, and the wide-eyed looks I got were kind of priceless. I'm very much not a confrontational person irl so I have no idea how I had that surge of confidence, but yeah I was not gonna put up with people being weirdos that day

BONNIE MAYGARDEN is a multimedia artist who received her MFA in Studio Arts from Tulane University. She attended Pratt Institute in New York, where she received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. "I'm telling you, Huck old buddy," excitedly exclaimeth Hokey Wolf one morning over breakfast, "I may have come up with perhaps the ultimate show in wrasslin' of the old school, one GUARANTEED to give modern 'professional wrestling' the dyspepsia!"

Which only saw That Oh So Merry, Chuckleberry, Huckleberry Hound respond with blushing modesty typical of him in a way, "Shucks, Hokey--and who did you have in mind as the combatants?"

"Why, none other than Breezly Bruin, The Terror of the Tundra ... and Square Bear from the Hair Bear Bunch, he of the Invisible Motorcycle and all other groovy schtick that the trio happens to be known for!"

"I get the idea, Hokey."

"And besides, I admit that the inspiration was a little on the tacky side."

"I believe you mean those attacks at Milwaukee's old Washington Park Zoo when a polar bear drowned three black bear cubs in their display pen for no apparent reason--"

"Only to have the zookeeper claim 'playfulness' as a patsy ... and to make matters worse, such happening no less than three times!"

"It just makes you wonder what exactly this world is coming to," wistfully remarked Huckleberry Hound over coffee and a malted waffle. After a short pause: "Hokey ... how exactly is it that you come up with such absurd ideas in the first place?"

"Huck, it's simple ... Money!"

Which left Huckleberry somewhat dumbfounded.

Meanwhile, for some while, preparations on the part of both ursine camps in preparing the contenders for such an unlikely show of "wrasslin'" in Battle Royale form were well underway:

In Breezly Bruin's case, such entailed the gym and workout rooms of the Peter Potamus Travelling SCUBA Par-tay at its La Jolla complex aimed at maximising the performance of the divers physically and mentally. And as if the body bag and grappling moves weren't good enow, there were also swimming sessions in the evaluation pool of the troupe.

As for Square Bear, some unlikely sparring partners in the wrasslin' game were procured by Hair Bear from a "drive-through" wildlife park as was otherwise in its death throes (and, more likely than not, were actually at the wildlife park proper) ... lions and tigers and bears, oh my! as sparring partners, not to mention plenty of running and jogging on the Secret Surf and Dive Spot's beach.

Meanwhile, Pratt's Rainbow Gardens, the venue for such a display, was somehow caught unaware of what they wanted to stage, even with a pay-per-view hookup in the offing, thanks to master showman Hokey Wolf's flair and charm in seeking the old mazuma. Luckily, two show cancellations on short notice freed up the scheduling so that the Ursine Battle Royale! (as Hokey was promoting the whole) could actually be carried out, even with barely a month's time for to prepare for the whole.

And nothing could be weirder a show in the offing than this.

Excerpts from articles about Birmingham Alabama’s Sloss Furnaces history site of the 2022 World Games sport climbing venue

As with pretty much anything in the south over 100 years old, Sloss furnace’s history is rife with racism and discrimination. Its early years saw much of the more dangerous labor roles filled by African-American convicts forced into labor by a justice system that definitely wasn’t trying to keep the institution of slavery even after the Civil War.

The companies kept labor costs low by employing black workers, who came from depressed agricultural areas and supplied cheap labor. And the coal used to fire the furnaces was largely mined by forced convict labor leased to the companies at very low rates by the state and county governments.

When convict labor came to be in 1928, the unionized workers at Sloss were laid off in favor of cheap, loaned prison labor. These prisoners were also mostly black. This business practice which has been compared to slavery by the Sloss Furnaces staff themselves.

The largest prison mines were the Slope 2 and the Shaft mines, operated by TCI in Pratt City, and the Coalburg prison mine, operated by Sloss with county prisoners.

More than 300 people joined members of the Jefferson County Memorial Project (JCMP), city and county officials, residents and civic leaders Monday night at Sloss Furnaces to dedicate a historical marker in memory of two lynching victims.

Let's talk about Pratt Truss bridges. Still there? Good! My first stop and final destination on this New Jersey motorcycle adventure both featured Pratt Truss bridges built in the 19th century. I knew nothing about them until I was trying to connect (no pun) the two venues featured in this video. Now I know more than enough but will mercifully spare the details. The historic Strimples Saw Mill in Stockton, NJ, was a discovery right out the of deepest recesses of Appalachia. The road to it was as deserted as a theater featuring interpretive dance, yet less than four miles east of the Delaware River.
