I never got around to posting so here finally goes. Quite some time ago I was lucky enough to be part of a postal art project by Carole Loeffler in support of USPS. I received these beautiful little collages of which one is now on my wall (swipe) where I can see it everyday at my desk, next to a strange little drawing that I found at a fleamarket and the postcard of Marshall Rosenberg that I made for a project on non-violent communication last fall. We collect beliefs through life like briars as we ramble through the forest. And they cling to us, hoping to make it the next place we are going. Some fall away on their own. Some are a little more stubborn and must be torn away. But some we miss and they still stick. And we don’t notice, so it becomes apart of us. We don’t see it stuck, gliding right along as we continue to move through life. All those briars, so. many. briars., knit together and from a blanket and we wrap it around us so tightly. We then pretend ourselves safe wrapped securely behind that blanket of beliefs. We are protected from the storms of the world as we stay swathed in that blanket. A blanket that gets wet when it rains. Tatters when the wind blows. Freezes when snow falls. And when we look, really look at that blanket, we see it never protected us, it never was a part of us. We see the holes in it. We see the prickles in it. We see the frailty, the fallibility and the detachment of it. Then we can let go that tight hold on it. We watch it fall away. We watch belief by belief drop and crumble into the ground. We realize we are not those beliefs that we once held onto so dearly. We realize those beliefs did not define who we are. We realize those beliefs were trauma. No matter how seemingly innocent or small, trauma all the same. Trauma because they caused injury to our psyche & hearts. And we rise, letting all the beLIEfs fall to the ground shattering, because without our attachment to the beLIEf, it has no power and it disintegrates. And we stand in the truth of ALL of who we are and accept ALL of who we are. And we smile, not because we “found” ourselves but because we finally KNOW and ACCEPT ourselves. And we giggle with unbridled joy because we know no beLIEf can ever harm us again. WE are ALL of who we are: no beliefs, no judgements, no labels. I am.
