Jade Nguyen grew up in an undisclosed location in rural Viet Nam, the child of a French soldier and a Vietnamese villager.  As a child, Jade was abducted and forced into slavery. She eventually murdered her enslaver and traveled the countryside until she came across the Chinese freedom fighter Weng Chan. The soldier took in Jade and taught her all he knew about martial arts and guerrilla combat. 

Jade additionally acquired an advanced knowledge of poisons from the famed assassin known as the Spitting Cobra.  Naming herself ‘Cheshire’ she set out to become a renown mercenary and assassin.  To this end she battled The Teen Titans on several occasions.  Somewhere herein she had an affair with the Titan, Speedy (Roy Harper); an affair that produced a daughter (Lian).  Cheshire served among the Suicide Squad, the Injustice Society and Secret Six.  

The Young Justice animated series reimagined Jade’s backstory, presenting her as the older sister of Artemys Crock and daughter of the super villains, Sportsmater and Tigress.  This version also became a renown assassin and matched wits against the Young justice squad; and likewise had a child with Roy Harper.  Yet another iteration of the character featured in the animated movie, Batman: Soul of the Dragon as a young student of the martial arts master, O’Sensei. 

Actress Kelly Hu voiced Jade in Young Justice; whereas actress Jamie Chung voiced the character in Batman: Soul of the Dragon.  

Cheshire first appeared in the pages of The New Teen Titans Annual #2 (1983).

October 1982 to November 1984. Among the segments of DC's voluminous archives that they ought to properly reprint but probably never will is this early 1980s revival of aviator hero Blackhawk by Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle. Created by Will Eisner and Chuck Cuidera for Quality Comics back in 1941, the Blackhawks were a multinational paramilitary squadron, with vaguely kinky black leather uniforms and special aircraft they operated from their own secret private island. They fought the Nazis during WW2 and later branched out into anticommunism and international supervillains. The original series was for years defined by excellent artwork (in particular by Reed Crandall), broad characterization, exaggerated ethnic accents, and some egregious racism (much of it directed at the Blackhawks' Chinese cook/mascot, "Chop-Chop"). In the late '60s, there was a brief, ludicrous attempt to turn the characters into superheroes, which hastened the demise of the original book, but the Blackhawks still had their fans — including Steven Spielberg, whose interest in developing a BLACKHAWK feature film occasioned this revival.

Probably the best word for this 23-issue run is "solid." It returns the characters to their original WW2 milieu, dials down the racism (the Chinese character eventually even gets a proper uniform), and offers some very competent storytelling from Evanier and Spiegle. The individual plots are seldom outstanding, but there are only a few real duds, and it's significantly more consistent than most monthly books of its era. Evanier and Spiegle were a good team, as further evidenced by their charming creator-owned CROSSFIRE series, launched through Eclipse toward the end of this run, although it wasn't enough to keep the BLACKHAWK book alive after Spielberg's interest lapsed.

The 1987–1988 Howard Chaykin miniseries (later collected as BLACKHAWK: BLOOD & IRON) is flashier and more fun, although it remains controversial. Chaykin made Blackhawk (whom Chaykin named Janos Prohaska, after a real-world Hollywood stuntman best known today as the guy who played the Horta on the STAR TREK TOS episode "The Devil in the Dark") an abrasive dick, and sidelined most of the rest of the group in favor of a new Lady Blackhawk, a brassy American Communist named Natalie Reed. (Chaykin did at least give "Chop-Chop" a real name — Weng Chan.) The Evanier/Spiegle series was not intended to reinvent the characters so much as to present a palatable median version that could provide the foundation for a feature film, so while it's not as dynamic or as stylish, it's also much less confrontational. For some, that makes it the definitive modern treatment of this venerable franchise.

The implications of this incident for the crypto industry in Hong Kong are significant. Experts believe the Securities and Futures Commission may intensify its enforcement of new crypto regulations. The regulator has previously cautioned investors to use licensed cryptocurrency trading platforms exclusively. Livio Weng, the COO of HashKey Group, pointed out that the incident underscores why the public must choose licensed financial institutions for their investment activities. For instance, HashKey is a licensed crypto trading service provider in Hong Kong. “The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong has been intensifying its efforts to license and regulate the exchange industry in recent years. Sejak beberapa hari terakhir, warga Malaysia berbondong-bondong memenuhi supermarket untuk berebut persediaan air minum dalam kemasan. Panic buying air kemasan ini terutama melanda Penang. Kekeringan di Sungai Penang membuat warga Malaysia melakukan panic buying air mineral kemasan di sejumlah pasar swalayan. Hujan yang jarang dan bendungan yang mengering membuat kurang lebih satu juta orang di Penang dan Kedah memborong air kemasan. Ditambah lagi, perusahaan Air Selangor mengumumkan pipa saluran utama dengan diameter 2.200 mm di Jalan Bukit Cerakah, Bandar Puncak Alam, Kuala Selangor bocor. Padahal, saluran ini berfungsi mendistribusikan air bersih dalam skala besar. Mengutip dari The Star, penduduk Malaysia ramai-ramai menyerbu supermarket dan memborong isi rak botol air minum. Di media sosial juga memperlihatkan kekacauan dengan saling dorong karena orang saling berebut air botol.

Kelangkaan Air Minum Imbas Meyusutnya Debit Sungai Muda

Situasi panic buying terjadi setelah adanya kekhawatiran kelangkaan air minum imbas aliran Sungai Muda yang tiba-tiba menyusut drastis di beberapa titik. Sebagai informasi saja, Sungai Muda adalah sungai terpanjang yang terletak di sebelah utara Malaysia. Jutaan orang bergantung pada sungai ini, karena menjadi pemasok air baku bagi banyak perusahaan penyedia air bersih. Sungai ini memiliki panjang 178 km dan melalui daerah-daerah Baling, Sik, Kulim, dan Kuala Muda. Kedah dan Seberang Perai Utara, Penang sebelum mencapai Selat Malaka. Imbas menyusutnya debit air kedah, air keran dari PDAM di rumah-rumah penduduk berhenti mengalir. Efek lainnya, banyak pemilik usaha, terutama rumah makan, memutuskan tutup karena ketiadaan suplai air. Dengan menyusutnya pasokan air dari Sungai Muda, berdampak pada menurunnya ketinggian permukaan di banyak waduk yang menyuplai air baku. Tanpa air dari Sungai Muda, level debit air pada bendungan di Penang mengalami titik terendah. Bendungan Ayer Itam hanya terisi 39,8 persen, bendungan Teluk Bahang hanya 46,2 persen, bahkan Bendungan Mengkuang hanya terisi 88,2 persen, yang sebelumnya di atas 90 persen.

Kerusakan Sensor Pintu Air Otomatis

Dalam penyelidikan sementara, salah satu penyebab menyusutnya debit air adalah terbukanya pintu air otomatis yang penggeraknya adalah sensor. Yang mana, sensor yang terpasang disebut-sebut mengalami kerusakan. Ketua Menteri Penang, Chow Kon Yeuw mengimbau warganya menghemat air. Dia menegaskan hanya ada cukup air bagi penduduk setempat untuk bertahan 120 hari lagi. Sementara itu, Presiden Penang Water Watch, Chan Ngai Weng mengatakan fenomena berkurangnya debit air ini adalah peringatan untuk warga Penang, meski kerusakan pada sensor pintu air menjadi pemicunya. “Penggunaan air harian per kapita Penang melonjak hingga di atas 300 liter tahun lalu, tertinggi di negara ini. Tarif harus dinaikkan untuk mengendalikan pemborosan air,” katanya. Tentang sensor yang salah yang menyebabkan gerbang bendungan di Sungai Muda terbuka, Chan mengatakan seharusnya ada peringatan otomatis ketika gerbang bendungan terbuka sendiri karena kesalahan teknis tersebut. “Komputer tidak membuat kesalahan. Pihak berwenang harus memeriksa apakah sensornya rusak atau apakah ada virus dalam program tersebut," beber Weng. “Kalau pun rusak sensornya, seharusnya juga ada peringatan yang dikirim ke setiap otoritas pengelola air di Penang dan Kedah begitu permukaan air Sungai Muda turun di bawah level tertentu,” katanya lagi. 

Chan mengatakan banyak orang memprotes agar permasalahan kelangkaan air dalam jangka panjang seharusnya cepat terselesaikan oleh pemerintah Penang dan Penang Water Supply Corporation. Salah satu solusinya, adalah meminta tambahan suplai air dari sungai yang ada di negara bagian tetangganya, Perak. Namun, kedua negara bagian itu belum menemukan kata sepakat. “Tidak benar Penang tidak memiliki rencana masa depan untuk ketahanan air. Ada banyak rencana dan pihak berwenang Penang telah berbicara dengan rekan-rekan mereka di Kedah secara damai,” katanya. i’m not sure if you’ve read this or not but what do you think about bruce comparing jade to dick? in batman: secret files, he said: “she reminds me of nightwing. young, angry, in need of direction.” for additional context, the entire issue is set in the past, it’s just not clear when (my guess is before she met roy but that’s besides the point).

i know this issue was only published like two or so years ago but when i got this ask surprisingly the first thing my mind went to with the comparison was the parental relationships bruce and weng chan have with dick and jade. not in the sense that bruce and weng chan are similar as parents (i honestly feel like weng chan is what a lot of robin fans and now even writers Want bruce to be to justify the take that he’s emotionally abusive) but in that they both offered a sort of refuge and direction to children who were otherwise lost and deeply traumatized by their childhood experiences. along that vein i think the behavioral comparison between jade and dick is really interesting bc those relationships with their parental figures are really about them learning how to channel this energy and emotion within themselves towards something that eventually gives them purpose, but that they also struggle with sometimes loathing and wanting to escape from bc of the burden of expectations. idk if the person who wrote the secret files issue was thinking about it to that deep of a degree but it’s very interesting to think about this way for me 🧐
