Episode 30: Coming Clean
If Paul was planning to test the waters about coming out, it seemed that talking to Jamie was the best start. After their awkward encounter which revealed their shared attraction to Thornton, they still hadn’t properly talked about it.
Tumblr media
Paul began by asking her what happened between her and Thornton that night–aside from the dirty version she’d already told him about. He made it clear that he was asking without judgment and that there were no hard feelings. After all, she was right that they never defined their relationship.
Tumblr media
She said she was upset with Thornton that night and confronted him. She didn’t think it was right for him to cut her off like that because of Morgana’s insecurities. After some back and forth about it, Thornton and Jamie both admitted to having feelings for each other. Things started to get physical, but Thornton stopped and said he couldn’t continue. That was when Jamie stormed off and found Paul.
Tumblr media
She apologized for using Paul to deal with her feelings about Thornton, but Paul supposed he was doing the same thing that night. “If you didn’t already figure it out, I’m bisexual,” he confessed, feeling a bit lighter now that he’d shared the truth with someone else.
Tumblr media
Jamie sensed the weight he’d been carrying and warmly embraced him. She assured him that she didn’t feel any differently about him and supported him 100%. Paul was appreciative, but pointed out that the bigger issue at hand was her feelings for another man. Jamie sighed. “I wish I didn’t want him, but I do,” she said, her eyes brimming with tears.
Tumblr media
“I guess I could say the same,” Paul quipped, and they both laughed at the awkwardness of the situation. It felt good to share a laugh with someone over something that had caused him such turmoil.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, Paul and Jamie agreed that there were too many outside factors at play for them to continue their romantic relationship and decided to just be friends.
After Jamie left, Danica and Wesley came to check in with Paul. They'd picked up on the tension between him and Jamie and were wondering if everything was okay with them.
Tumblr media
Without getting into all of the details, Paul told his friends that he and Jamie decided they were better as friends. He also took the opportunity to come out to them. They both apologized for the hurtful comments they'd made in the past and promised to be more supportive.
Paul ended the day feeling as though a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He was finally experiencing the acceptance he'd craved for so long. He just hoped coming out to his family would be this easy.

[What if the Leafs/Sharks game in Epic was covered by TSN? Spoilers Him/Us/Epic (Sarina Bowen, Elle Kennedy)]
NHL | TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS | SAN JOSE SHARKS
“He was f***ing incredible”: Maple Leafs’ Wesley on playing against husband
TSN.ca Staff
SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks victory last night will be one to remember for their unlikely hero, emergency back-up goalie Jamie Canning – husband of star Maple Leafs forward Ryan Wesley. The game made history, being the first time a married couple has played in an NHL game, and facing each other across the ice on opposing teams, at that.
“I was sitting there in the opponents jersey thinking, ‘Wes is going to kill me’,” said Canning. “I hoped that I would just have to sit there and open the bench door for the line changes. And I’d never had better seats for one of Wes’s games.”
It was a few minutes into the third period that 25-year-old Canning, a Toronto major junior hockey coach, was called into action for San Jose, tasked with facing a Leafs team where his husband started as a rookie almost three years ago. Canning, originally from California’s Marin County, came away with a 4-3 victory for the Sharks in his NHL debut, shutting Toronto out for the duration of his shift in net.
“He was f***ing incredible”, said Wesley. “We didn’t know who the back-up’s back-up was going to be until he was announced and skated onto the ice. At first I didn’t know what was happening. Watching my teammates playing against my own husband was so f***ing trippy.”
Once a prospect for the Detroit Red Wings, Jamie Canning was a formidable college goaltender in his senior year at Rainier when they clinched a spot in the Frozen Four. His Tigers were eliminated in the semifinals, but Wesley’s own Northern Mass went on to win the NCAA championship that year. Despite playing in the same tournament, the two never faced off against each other.
Until now. Injuries meant that Canning, who was already at the arena to cheer the Leafs on with his family, was asked to dress as a last-resort back-up for the now-starting goaltender Tim Pitti. A pile-up on the 101 meant that a back up goalie from AHL-affiliate San Jose Barracuda would not make the arena in time for the puck drop.
“I am on the emergency back-up list for the league, but nobody ever gets called,” said Canning, who wore number 33 for the game. “Every now and then you hear stories about an accountant who gets called up to play one period for the Rangers or the Kings, but those are practically fables, rare situations that allow an everyday Joe to live out his professional athlete dreams. I couldn’t say no.”
After the second intermission, Sharks netminder Tim Pitti was levelled following a punishing hit by two Maple Leafs’ forwards, and Canning answered the bell. Toronto had led 3-1 after the first two periods, but Canning made saves on every shot the Leafs fired on him, allowing the Sharks to come back with three more goals of their own.
“Look at J-Bomb go!”, forward Blake Riley was heard to shout from the Maple Leafs’ bench. Riley is close to the pair, who he has dubbed ‘Wesmie’, and is romantically involved with Canning’s sister Jessica.
The moment when the husbands came face-to-face arrived with five minutes left on the clock. Wesley found himself on a breakaway, charging towards where his other half stood guard. Some say that they had seen Canning stick his tongue out at Wesley when his glove closed around the puck, denying him the goal.
Toronto was not able to tie up the game.
“Of course I’m disappointed that we didn’t win”, said Wesley. “But I can’t deny that I’m happy for Jamie. He deserves it.”
After the defeat, Wesley’s teammates are understood to not hold any ill feelings towards Canning, who has proudly been called a member of the Maple Leafs’ family ever since their relationship was revealed two years ago.
Said Toronto forward Matt Eriksson, “When I heard that Canning was headed into the Shark’s net, I thought ‘s***, this is going to be epic’, and he was.”
Wesley and a few Leafs were seen graciously celebrating with Canning and his new teammates at a local San Jose bar after the game. Wesley had been told, “you can have your goalie back after we buy him a drink.”
“He saved our butts tonight,” said Nik Sokolav, San Jose’s star forward. “It was a big surprise to us in our locker room when we figured out who he was. I thought, ‘no f***ing way is this guy going to be our back-up goalie, he’s just going to hand the game to Ryan Wesley’. But he said nothing would make him happier than to kick his hubby’s a**, and I guess he did.”
A correspondent for TSN reports that Tim Pitti, seen at the bar with his arm in a sling, bought a round of drinks for both teams. Said Wesley, “we lent you Toronto’s best goalie coach. It’s time to pay up.”
Canning will return to Toronto this weekend where his major junior team will play their game against Niagara. In spite of his dedication to his coaching career, Canning is rumored to be a target for the Ottawa Senators, who are looking to bolster their goaltender ranks.
Jamie Canning married Ryan Wesley after Wesley’s rookie year with the Maple Leafs, in which he came out as the first openly gay player in the NHL. The two had been childhood friends, having attended hockey camp together at Lake Placid, New York, every summer since they were both 13 years-old.

15 Golden Retriever/Black Cat Energy Romance Books
Grumpy heroes are my jam most of the time, but sometimes I’m in the mood for opposites attract romance done a little differently – and that’s where golden retriever meets black cat energy kicks in. One of my favorite rom com movies growing up was 10 Things I Hate About You, and it’s got the same energy as this newish romance trope. It’s not quite grumpy/sunshine (or reverse grumpy/sunshine, which…

book review || Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley
video review ||
~Thanks to Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of Fake It Till You Bake It in exchange for an honest review. ~
Okay, so this was a good month for fake dating books because I also liked how this book handled the trope! That being said though, this wasn’t as great as I was hoping.
I love a good cooking setting romance, but the pacing of this was all over the place and the plot was... weird.
This started off strong, with a meet-ugly between Jada and Donovan. Initially, I really was thinking Donovan would be my preferred POV, but Jada ended up growing on me. She felt very personable and I could certainly relate to her speaking before you think issue as well as her fear of failure and disappointing her loved ones. The message about how women are portrayed in media was well done and the handling of her dyslexia was as well. I think overall, Jada had a strong character arc and was probably the most well-written character in the book. On the other hand, Donovan was charming in the beginning but I felt as though his personality slowly waned as the book progressed. And god, the possessiveness that comes out of nowhere and was so unwarranted! On top of that, his side plot felt very low stakes given that he could lose his company.
The attraction between these two was instant, but I didn’t feel like there was enough chemistry to back it up. They bickered a lot (sometimes sounding more like teenagers than adults) and only had a few serious conversations where I felt that a relationship was actually blossoming. Two chili peppers for the smut scene.
Side characters should have been more built up by the end, especially if there is going to be a sequel, and the last-minute conflict was so unnecessary. It lasted a single chapter. And then, of course, the required couple drama that also lasted a chapter. Why can’t we, as a book community, move past this? Instead of making them break up for a single chapter (that apparently was a three-month period?), the last-minute conflict could have been stretched out and the couple could have worked together to find a solution! In the process, they could see how committed they are and what they truly mean to one another! That would have been much more interesting.
I think this was an easy, quick romance read, but unfortunately, didn’t stand out.

“Looking for loaves, loves, and laughter? Do I have the books for you! Culinary romances feed the stomach and soul with their delicious mix of hot food and even hotter relationships. You come to them to read about the trials and tribulations of the restaurant industry. From opening bakeries and restaurants to maintaining them, making money and food is objectively hard. Add in the complications of celebrity chefs, reality baking competitions, and other famous employees and you have a blend of messy but delectable romances. After all, food is the gateway to the soul.
Now, culinary romances are not a new invention. I have, however, noticed an uptick in the number of culinary romances published, and I am not alone. Bettina Makalintal’s Eater article even noted, “Move over, bodice rippers. It’s all about apron tuggers now.” I cannot argue with her point that there are more and more culinary romances hitting the shelves, and many of them are queer or racially diverse.
Culinary romances give authors the ability to showcase food culture and the ways food is sold to the public. From celebrity chefs, to cooking contestants, to chefs that run businesses, part of a character’s success relies on the way they market themselves and their food to their intended customers or audience. Then throw cultural identities and work-love life balance into the mix and you have yourself a compelling romance. Given the size of the sub-genre, I only included a selection that are sure to leave you hungry for more.”

15 (More) Sexy Fake Relationship Romance Books
It’s a tried and true trope that can be executed in so many ways, and one that never fails to deliver. A personal favorite of mine, fake relationship romances can involve strangers, friends, enemies, or forbidden someones, all caught up in situations that soon spiral into unexpected territory. I love the little moments when deciphering what’s real and what’s fake is difficult, the moments when…
