By now y'all know this is my personal blog. Putting all my feelings and thoughts down.

Still no income. Brightside...I will probably start my new job at a school after Eid. Y'all think, hey, that's good news. Dude, not to my savings account, it ain't. Borrowing money and moving money for the past 5 months. Each month the bills take a HUGE bite into my savings. Not counting the necessities like food and feminine products. So yeah. I'm hella worried. Last December really took a toll on my mental health when the insurance companies asked for their yearly payment. That sucks eggs, man. Oh another thing, my phone has that infamous green line in the middle of my screen. It will cost me a new phone just to get it repaired. Even after repair, it has only a 1-month warranty. FML.

Another thing that weighs heavily on my mind is that bitch of my aunt, aka Dad's sis. She still hasn't sold the Devil's home. I mean, how can she? The damn place it's as old as me (not telling you how old I am; I'm a millennial that's the only clue I'm giving). No one wants to buy that home for the price she's selling, even though it's 'convenient' etc etc. When I released it to her, it was cleaned and manageable (also, it was after GP passed) Her son is now 30; if I recall correctly, he doesn't need babysitting. So it's her and her husband now. I mean she could downsize her 2-storey flat to save cost. Whatever I digress. Without that money from the sale, I can't do my kitchen. I had 2 quotes from 2 different contractors. Each will cost me almost 6k. Including the changing of the toilet doors. sigh.

My mum's condition is stable and no change over the years. With the "occasionally" and 'normal' sounds of her being strangled by an invisible hand. The sounds coming from her I can only describe would be the sounds if I were to strangle someone.

Mdm Sunflower finally got her goal. She and her husband have a daughter. She came home to them on my birthday. Will need to find out if her girl is a Pisces - they are emotional balls of energy which Mr and Mdm Sunflower are not. Her girl has already proven to be the Lil Diva already, haha. Luckily her girl is a Rabbit - they are kind and social creatures. She will make a great mum. That has been her goal since she got married almost 20 years ago. It seems like yesterday we were talking about our goals and what we wanted to achieve in our life.

Le Bf celebrated our 2nd Vday at a proper restaurant. We didn't celebrate my birthday much coz was trying to balance my mum and him. We ate at a hawker centre (it's a Singaporean eating centre) because his workplace is 1.5 hours away from my flat. He was doing sales, so he couldn't really go anywhere. Plus, I sus he just lazy to plan shit. So he just manages with whatever. Also, I was supposed to meet him early, but I went marketing with Mum in the afternoon and took a nap thinking he could only leave later when he didn't tell me that he had someone at the shop with him to cover. sigh. men.

Then I was thinking of surprising him and celebrating his birthday by bringing him to Gardens by the Bay at night to watch the light show since he had never seen it before. First, he didn't this week tell me he took 3 days off and planned to spend his whole 3 days with his mates and for his social work. I got to know this only yesterday. Secondly, he told me, I think a couple of weeks ago, that he's travelling to Bangkok this week, and his flight is tomorrow at 5am and will be returning to SG on the 10th (again I was told this yesterday when he came over). So he will be in Bangkok from 6 to 10 (for duty and play his words not mine), including on his birthday. So I'm a mix of sad and angry at the moment. Sad I couldn't celebrate his birthday again. Angry, he spends his birthday overseas again. the first time, his friend treated him to a seafood dinner in Malaysia. While I thought he was working when he sent his seafood dinner pics to me. I don't blame him for wanting to have fun with his mates, but sometimes I wonder am I the fool trying to create memories? I'm in two minds of just throwing his present in his face and telling him next time I just wish you HPB. I won't be celebrating his birthday anymore anything since he prefers to spend it with his friends overseas.

thinking about the whole Kate Bush thing - i don't watch Stranger Things (but i've been *this* close a few times) nor am i on tik-tok or wherever the song continues to trend. but i’m feeling like reflecting on the age-old dynamic of  younger people discovering older media. feels like there are two pretty basic takes i want to avoid: 1. it's good that kids are discovering great old tunes! good for them. 2. these young'ns don't understand the impact of Hounds of Love! they've never even heard the classic OMD run! it's easy to say #1 is true (but too obvious to be really worth saying imo - comes off as...i dunno - lil too ‘i’m cool with the youth’ and an empty statement.) and #2 is what stuck up music snobs say. and it's mean, y’know? no one wants to hear ‘that’s not your music - that’s my music! you don’t get it!’. but i’ll take a contrary position - debate club style - i kinda have a lil sympathy for that mean music snob, if they saw a part of their uh ‘musical/subcultural niche’ being repurposed to soundtrack a million tik-toks of younger folks having fun...hey, i’ve never been there, but i could see feeling a certain way.  ofc i’m a solid ‘91 core millenial - this boy was raised on napster & 9/11. Kate Bush ain’t my generation, necessarily. i do love Running Up That Hill - unimpeachable track. i should admit that it seems every year since about 20 i’ve tried to get into Hounds of Love, and always seem to fail to. i keep giving it a shot every couple of years - it’s almost become a running joke between me and...myself (& Kate!). i’m not sure if dancing to the tune at highschool prom in ‘83 woulda elevated the tune...i think mediocre songs can be elevated by a time & place. Running Up That Hill doesn’t need context to elevate it. it’s timeless (so is Hey Ya! by Outkast - was a bop then and still is. uh people still like mr brightside, etc.). and i’m sure there are examples of a song being removed from it’s time & place elevating it - i can’t think of an example right now...outside of like, examples of sampling. there must be tunes that came back & were more relevant (spotify algorithm bringing deep cuts to the surface?).  okay, i’m hesitant to say this but here’s my old-head gatekeeper story. in highschool i adored the band Xiu Xiu. they weren’t like the other Pitchfork bands - it was much darker stuff than like, Arcade Fire or TV on the Radio or what-have-you. it focused more on topics of abuse, dysphoria, suicidality, innocent casualties in senseless wars - elegies for people who's voices were silenced. example:  “the littlest of stones no one visits this solitude & death for you Gale Lynn 1948 unloved infant girl the loneliest of graves for you Gale Lynn” it was touching - in my own selfish teenage way i felt like xiu xiu understood me. they were a smaller group 6-7 years in and not legacy yet. then in 2016 they released a record of covers from the Twin Peaks show. it became their most popular record ever. Ever. and kickstarted a kind of zoomer-revival for the band some that saw as past their prime 15 yrs in. i was of two minds. all the themes that made xiuxiu one of those life-saving bands were replaced with a tv show (admittedly prolly a really good one - i’ve never seen it. loved Mulholland Drive tho). it’s not the end of the world, it’s just a band, but i did kinda feel a certain way. the switch from silenced voices to an already-famous franchise reaped their biggest success - it seemed to demonstrate something. i didn’t gatekeep the record or band - my twin is a massive Twin Peaks fan and i gave him the vinyl for our/his birthday.  i’m sure xiu xiu were happy for the boost in popularity - they know how these things go - and i genuinely think fans can have a stronger attachment to a body of work than even the creator. but in the hype and hoopla - the record coincided with the announcement of the series revival - i felt a small pang as i thought of the littlest of stones no one visits this unloved infant girl  the loneliest of graves for you Gayle Lynn.  - - - - - but it’d break my heart if i wrote anything that’d make anyone feel like xiu xiu couldn’t be ‘their’ band, or whatever. part of me feels this post comes off even more-than-a-little like that. *i* love xiu xiu! they don’t care about Gayle Lynn! they don’t care about the voiceless! they only like hipster directors and tv shows! they’re not real fans! and it’s making me not even wanna hit post. i don’t want my bored late night blog post to make a single person feel sour. and again it would crush me if my being reflective here was taken as active gatekeeping. i was so myopic to ever think i understood a band more than others. that attitude just hurts others and eventually isolates yourself. pls listen to xiuxiu if interested and y’know what? start at the twin peaks record. i’m serious it’s actually really good.  it would be just as fair to say that the folks who loved the Twin Peaks record understand or see something that *i* don’t. and it would be just as important. i mean honestly liking a tv show can be super fucking important. and can help someone keep hanging on in a serious kind of way. (and i understand the show deals with the metaphysical heavily? there’s prolly a lot to dig in there, no doubt). i’m thinking of how to be a fan of something - or deeply entrenched in anything - and allowing anyone in, even those who you feel may not have ‘earned it’ (i hate typing that, especially about a fucking band). it’s easy and even normal to have a selfish, infantile attachment to a piece of media you love, and to move beyond that is to understand that no one has to like or be a fan of anything to care about Gayle Lynn.

I thought the first few weeks of January were going to be easy; after all, it’s typically a dry spell. The Weeknd was thinking otherwise so naturally, we’ve got that to deal with this week as well as a pretty decently sized influx of new songs, and shaking up of the chart to fit the wants and needs of the British public in this new year. Speaking of album releases, whilst I would usually skip right to the new arrivals since there aren’t any returning entries, I figured I’d add more to this series, as if I wasn’t doing enough already, and discuss some album releases I heard last week from 2022 that absolutely won’t chart. This is where you get my unfiltered taste, so I apologise for how much less you think of me after finding out I’m into hyperpop or whatever.

Off the Charts

deitycrew – deitycrew

This underground European mixtape delivers a pretty unique blend of outsider house and cloud rap on this often incoherent mixtape that does feel a tad long given there are less ideas on display than I’d like to see. My favourite track is “shanghai”.

Digimaiden – NANORAY

The hardcore breaks producer returns with a project claiming to be indebted to the land, yet finding itself sounding less like grass spirits and flower pixies than just... a regular, generic dance record, still finding its footing. It’s a disappointment after their focused pair of records from last year, but it’s still decent at what it eventually decides to do. My favourite track is “reg”.

Antidawn – Burial

Burial’s most recent EP is one of heavenly uncertainty, shedding the need for any drums or true rhythm with this hazy, floating questioning of wherever the hell life is going. It sounds just like Burial’s dustiest and most aware of its surroundings, just without the rhythm section, leading to a purely excellent ambient selection. Check this out if you’re into it. My favourite tracks are “Shadow Paradise” and “New Love”.

NEW ARRIVALS

#61 – “Lone Ranger” – AJet2F, DC3, Hzino, Nerdz, HAZEY and BL@CKBOX

This isn’t a song as much as it is a cypher released on Christmas Day featuring six UK rappers. Several of these cyphers were compiled into an album, and this one happened to get the most traction. Is it any good? Well, I like how the drill rhythm is emulated through more Afrobeats-esque percussion, and... yeah, this is really good. Sure, there may not be a chorus to string everything together but the chemistry these guys have is infectious and they play off of each other really well with joyful ad-libs and referencing each other’s lyrics, as well as AJet25 and DC3 finishing each other’s bars. Those aren’t the only rappers on the track though and whilst I enjoyed the fun albeit basic freestyling, especially when DC3 claimed they’re so wavy that they could even say that they’re wavy in Latin, the relatively unchanging beat does get kind of tiring when less entertaining rappers are over it. Hzino and NERDZ are both leaving too much empty space in the production, probably as a result of them taking it a bit more seriously, meaning that the chemistry isn’t there to fill in the missing space. HAZEY, on the other hand, doesn’t need that, as he delivers a solo verse that is non-stop intensity with a very unique delivery and rapid flow. It does end abruptly and the content isn’t all that engaging, but again, it isn’t really a song, just some fun, and for that, it’s worth a listen.

#47 – “25k jacket” – Gunna featuring Lil Baby

So, Gunna released his fourth instalment of the Drip Season series in the overlong bore of DS4EVER, an album I struggled to get through primarily because of the rote production, shoddy mixing and the vocal presence being completely devoid of character. When all of this is cloudy and peaceful like on, say, Drip or Drown 2, it’s tolerable, but this album is attempting purely for two modes: making bangers and making vaguely love or sex-related R&B tracks, none of which Gunna can effectively do when he sounds like he gives less of a damn than I do about his own record. My favourite track is “mop”, if I had to choose. Because there is no God, we have three Gunna tracks in a row to discuss here, starting with the nothingness that is “25k jacket”. The instrumental is offensively bad, replacing any instrumental foundation with screeching percussion, flat 808s and sour notes in the string section. This industrial approach would be good if there were any groove, but absolutely no-one involved was having any fun. Lil Baby keeps an okay flow, but Gunna slips all over the beat with about as much care as a camel on lean. The content is zilch when it comes to anything of interest, so yeah, it’s just a waste of time. Speaking of...

#43 – “too easy” – Gunna and Future

This one is passable, even if it has the same weedy sound to its cheap pianos, because I guess sounding like total garbage is just Wheezy’s signature. This beat sounds like it’s constantly scrunching itself to hide from Gunna, who at least sounds mixed decently – probably because this was a single released prior to the album – and to be honest, delivers a pretty catchy verse and hook. I would say this if the verses weren’t bogged down by this awkward synth blare, and if the post-chorus didn’t contain a line where Gunna claims that he sticks his dick so hard into a woman that “it ain’t no more breathing”. Charming. Gunna, this was a waste of your Future – he sounds great here, with his Auto-Tuned croon really elevating the beat, making that synth blare sound like triumphant fanfare because he has a level of confidence that Gunna fails to channel. Sure, he’s the King of Misogyny, and that is not lost on this verse, but he ends it with decent wordplay, so I’ll take it. Roddy’s verse on the remix is pretty decent, but when it’s over this beat, it’s hard to convince me that what you’re saying is worth any of my time.

#40 – “pushin P” – Gunna and Future featuring Young Thug

This is one of the most bizarrely awful songs that I think I have ever heard. I’m not doing a year-end list this year, either, so I’m going to very gladly not keep any of my thoughts away for the next 12 months, because this is just such a strange track. There are three rappers here, but the song’s barely two minutes since Gunna and Future share a verse. Wheezy’s beat combines those weedy loops that barely sound like whatever instrument they attempt to replicate with an incessant reversed string loop and bassy, distracting percussion that just sounds like a factory. Naturally, for a beat so undeserving of any fun you could transpose on it, these three fellas have decided to be playful. I assumed “pushin’ P” just meant being a “player” or “keeping it real”, but Gunna decided to take it in his own hands and define what “P” means with examples. Jumping in on arguments you have no involvement in is NOT “P”, whilst being loyal is DEFINITELY “P”. Young Thug is “P”, but Freddie Gibbs is absolutely not. With that said, none of these examples are in the song itself, which decides to almost immediately meander and it seems that “P” means anything. Gunna and Future trade bars but leave as much empty space as possible, it seems, if they don’t decide to fill it in with that Godforsaken “pushin’ P” slogan. “P” could mean Percocets, because as Future says, this woman is a lesbian, but for “P”, she turns “Pesbian”. After she lets Gunna “squeeze”, she leaves but she “keeps the P”. Whether this means she A) keeps the Percocets, B) keeps Gunna’s money or C) takes ownership of Gunna’s penis for herself, I honestly don’t know. There’s no flow to speak of – Future spends most of the chorus chuckling to himself and making vaguely rhythmic sounds, without having a verse to himself, which is, again, a waste of your Future. Whilst Gunna and Pluto aren’t going to sell “stupid but weird” that well, it wouldn’t be farfetched to expect it of Thugger, right? Well, he starts off by... panting, stuttering and grunting, before flexing that he is too rich to text people, that we should take the letter “P” out of the alphabet, and that he has just had sexual intercourse with a cup of water. Well, he clearly didn’t have very much fun doing the deed with H2O, so the metaphor – which should be clear – is lost, since it doesn’t seem like they were aware how seriously a song containing the word “Pesbian” should be taken. Thankfully, the other album that impacted this week is a lot better, so let’s just talk about that one for now... right?

#39 – “Miserable Man” – David Kushner

Nope? Miserable men before we get to that? Okay, well, the genre of indie rock exists, so miserable men aren’t exactly breaking any ground but regardless, this is the first charting song for David Kushner. No, not the author, and no, not the Velvet Revolver guitarist. This David Kushner, who has one song on Spotify yet suspiciously a lot of official playlist spots, can be aptly categorised as “some guy”. The song’s not any good either, feigning lo-fi acoustics with an unremarkable voice, odd vocal mixing and some of the worst-accented multi-tracking I’ve heard in pop. The song is all about wishing to part from the routine, but there’s not really that coherent of a narrative here, and he is absolutely not selling it, especially with the falsetto on that second pre-chorus, yikes. This isn’t up my alley at all, so... expect it to stick around is my guess. Weeknd now?

#22 – “How Do I Make You Love Me?” – The Weeknd

Finally, I get to talk about Dawn FM, the most recent output from The Weeknd, and a truly wonderful listening experience. Sadly, what charted is not the best from the album, as whilst it starts with the 80s synth-infused dance-pop, it quickly divulges into vaporwave-esque collages that sound like pop music figuring out what it wants to be from the ruins of a dystopian future where it at some point stopped existing. Jim Carrey’s narration was a brilliant choice, The Weeknd is on full form throughout as he is very willing to play with and manipulate his voice in ways I hadn’t expected him to venture in, and the whole record just sounds massive, like the budget was put to great use in composing some of the most fine-tuned pop music so far in this new decade. That’s in no small part to OPN, who produced the vast majority of the album alongside Abel, which was one of The Weeknd’s best ideas in years. It says something about an album that sounds so otherworldly, cyber and alien yet ends up digging right at the heart and soul, and that’s when it’s not urging for you to ponder your very surroundings. My favourite tracks are, in no order, “Out of Time”, “Here We Go... Again” featuring Tyler, The Creator, “Is There Someone Else?”, the “Every Angel is Terrifying” interlude, “Less than Zero”, and especially, the ethereal experience that is the immaculate outro, ”Phantom Regret by Jim”. Note that none of the songs I mentioned charted, as we have two songs from Dawn FM, both of which are from the slightly less solid first third or so of the album. We didn’t even get the most interesting of those tracks, “Gasoline” to chart, but we did get the best of them, in the form of “How Do I Make You Love Me?” If a song has ever warranted having eight separate producers, it’s this one because it truly sounds like this needed to have combined the powers of each of these people considering it is just dripping with ideas. The shaking 80s percussion, jerky jabs of vibrant synth all throughout the pre-chorus before it morphs into a full-on lead for the chorus, absorbing Abel’s phased voice into just another part of the tapestry. It’s insanely impressive how a song this sonically full comes off as so effortlessly produced, with every intricacy fitting into place as if this were some out-of-left-field synthpop jam band. It perfectly, if a little too oversold, encapsulates Abel’s desperate inabilities to continue a relationship. If I’m being too overwhelmingly positive about popular music right now, then don’t worry, because we have a Central Cee song to discuss next.

#21 – “Retail Therapy” – Central Cee

Central Cee is constantly frustrating to me. “Loading” was a great and immediately recognisable breakout single, and “Obsessed with You” was a wonderfully unique sample flip, but I’ve found myself really sick of everything in between, which just seems to have no willingness to display any personality at all. Thankfully, that recognisability and character I saw on “Loading” is actually here on “Retail Therapy”, with some of his most memorable bars to date amidst all the drug talk and flexing. His gang making money off of rock “like Led Zeppelin” was funny, and I like how the chorus is so mundane, focusing on how he just needs some “female energy” after being around the gang all week, and how after telling his girlfriend his star sign, she’s Googling the compatibility. On the second verse, he complains about time zones because people from Australia are calling him when he’s half-asleep. That strange yet endearing mundane energy through the bars translates well to the heavily contrasting and intense jazzy beat, taking the well-worn “Wildflower” sample and adding some drill bombast to it, though the sample is absolutely mixed too loud in the intro. With that said, it gets into a pretty perfect balance with the bouncy drill 808s once the song really picks up, and, yeah, this is a good song. Hopefully he can keep this up?

#10 – “Sacrifice” – The Weeknd

Let me preface this with the fact that I love Dawn FM and think that it deserves all the success it’s getting and more. With that said, I’m not a big fan of the one they’re pushing as a single. It’s well-crafted, sure, but the mix feels oddly flat, especially with that gutted synth bass, and the groove just isn’t there for me. It’s emulating Michael Jackson in his prime, as Abel’s tried to do so many times without realising his biggest asset is himself, and I’ve got to say, it’s a pretty good impression and a decent, electro-funk bop but nothing more than that. The song is all about how he won’t sacrifice anything for this woman, and he won’t be tied down, and it’s sold with as much charisma as ever, but feels underwritten without a true bridge. It’s not a bad song at all but is absolutely filler, to the point where I’m surprised it’s even being pushed.

#4 – “Fingers Crossed” – Lauren Spencer-Smith

Ah, now, this is the one I saw the most buzz about all throughout the last two weeks or so and I failed to really understand why. People have been calling it “drivers license” 2.0 because just like how every label wants their own Billie Eilish, every label now wants their own Olivia Rodrigo. She’s originally from Vancouver and competed on American Idol a couple years back, but this 18-year-old seemed to have a sudden, totally inconspicuous rise with her breakout hit “Fingers Crossed”. I refuse to believe that making teens write sad songs for TikTok and Spotify streams isn’t just the 2020s’ version of exploiting child actors, since this is not an industry for the vulnerable (if one even exists). Surely, it wouldn’t matter if the song was any good. Well, thankfully – or not, depending on how you see it – this sucks, so my cynical preamble was completely warranted. Perhaps not, as the biggest crime this has is how unremarkable it is. Other than some oddly specific lines, especially that one in the chorus about “daddy issues” that seems kind of uncalled for, this is a breakup song with a jaunty little snap and some pathetic indie-pop guitar, and therefore makes no one who doesn’t use TikTok feel any emotion at all. Harsh jabs aside, the main problem I have is actually with the songwriting, as Spencer-Smith has a convincingly distraught if oversold performance but only to sell a spite that doesn’t really come from a place that seems deserved. After all, there’s not a great level of detail in any of this – other than perhaps being overly dependent, I fail to see why she would have any reason to hate this ex who... made her breakfast early in the morning, introduced her to his family and sang you love songs? It’s implied something bad occurred, but there’s not any emphasis or exactness given to any of it, so it’s just lost on the listener. I have no idea how this debuted at #4 in all honesty, and I really hope it’s not here to stay.

Conclusion

With that said, Lauren Spencer-Smith doesn’t get the Worst of the Week because as you’d expect, Gunna is bagging it for the incomprehensible “pushin P” with Future and Young Thug, whilst “Fingers Crossed” gets the Dishonourable Mention. Best of the Week, meanwhile, is easily going to The Weeknd for “How Do I Make You Love Me?”, and I think Central Cee just overtakes Abel’s other track as the Honourable Mention for “Retail Therapy”.

Well, this week wasn’t promising, and unless some premonition causes Earl Sweatshirt to chart next week, I think adopting a thicker layer of sarcasm for 2022 might be on the agenda. Thank you for reading and I’ll see you next week!

Richie was holding his stomach cracking up, “Romeo and Juliet?! You can’t be fucking serious.”

Eddie’s cheeks went bright red. He knew the guys were going to make fun of him the minute they found out about the school play. “Listen, I’m doing shit in AP English and Mrs. Lane told me that if I tried out for the school play, she would give me extra credit. They needed more guys!”

“Of course they needed guys. No one wants to be in that stupid play written by an old dead guy.” Stan cracked up.

Eddie punched Stan in the arm, “All you do is read a book by an old dead guy, Stan. Who do you think wrote the fucking Torah?”

“Who did write the torah?” Richie asked genuinely.  

Stan scoffed at him punching his shoulder, “Shut up, Richie.”

Bill stepped in between them before they started roughhousing, “I’m s-s-sure you’ll be awesome E-e-e-edie.”

“I hate it when you stutter my name, Bill. You sound like Elmer Fudd.” Eddie said in frustration. Then he lightened up, “But thank you, Bill. I doubt it will be a big part. I am the smallest guy in this fucking school.”

“That’s not true. There are some freshman shorter than you.” Stanley laughed.

“I will murder you,” Eddie mumbled.

“Hey everyone! What’s shaking?” Mike came over with Beverly a couple steps behind him.

“Damn Mike,” She huffed out, “You are getting so tall. I can barely keep up with your strides. How’s it going, guys?”

Richie popped up next to Eddie quickly putting his arm around the boy’s shoulders, “Eds is trying out for the school play. I bet you’ll be cast as Juliet since you’re the cutest in the school.” Richie pinched Eddie’s cheek and Eddie smacked his hand away. Eddie did not want to be a lead character where he would have to kiss someone. The only person he wanted to kiss was Richie, but they hadn’t done anything for weeks now. The kiss in the closet felt like years ago.

Beverly frowned at Richie, “Then I can play Romeo because I tried out too.”

“What?!” They all collectively said.

“You did? You mean I won’t have to suffer this torture alone?!” Eddie said euphoric. He squirmed out of Richie’s grasp and grabbed Beverly’s hands gratefully, “Thank fuck. I was really worried the next couple weeks were going to suck.”

Beverly gave him a bright smile and kissed Eddie on the cheek. Eddie felt his face heat up in embarrassment. He felt compelled to look at Richie who had a weird expression on his face like he had been hit by a truck or something.

“What? Eddie’s the only one who gets a kiss on the cheek?” Richie pointed to his cheek stupidly. This made Eddie more annoyed. Richie can’t be serious for one second.

“You haven’t earned it,” Beverly smirked, poking Richie’s cheek hard.

“Bev! Beverly!” Ben came bounding over trying to catch his breath from running. “They…posted…they posted…” He took a deep breath, “They posted the cast list!”

“Oh no, not you to Haystack!” Richie threw up his hands. “I can’t believe almost half the group decided to become actors. Don’t forget us when you are rich and famous.”

“Please Richie, you’re the most dramatic one of all of us,” Stanley said shoving him.

“You’re right Stan the man. I will become rich and famous and forget you all!” Richie put an arm around Eddie’s shoulders again and steered him toward the cast list. “Except you Eds. You’ll live in my mansion and we will have a huge arcade room and eat our weight in candy.”

Eddie’s face flushed, “Don’t call me Eds!” The thought of living together made his stomach flutter.

The seven of them got to the list, which was crowded with other students looking at it. Eddie somehow ended up at the back and could not see over the other heads.

“I can’t fucking BELIEVE they gave Juliet to that slut!” Grete pushed her way through the gathered students. When she saw Beverly, the beast of a girl rounded on her in full rage. “Congratulations. I guess you can cross Eddie Kaspbrak off your list of people you fuck. Although, he’s probably already been there since you hang out with all these losers all the time.”

Grete slammed her shoulder into Beverly, who lost her footing and almost fell. Bill caught her before she fell, “Are y-y-you okay, B-B-Beverly?”

“Fine,” Beverly straightened herself out, eyes downcast. “Thanks, Bill.” She added quietly.

“Well, look on the Brightside. This means you’re Juliet!” Mike said sweetly putting his hand on Beverly’s arm reassuringly.

“Oh god…but that means I am…” Eddie shoved his way to the front and scanned the list. His eyes did not have to go too far.

“Fuck me!” Eddie cried.

“Thanks a lot, Eddie” Beverly laughed.

“Oh no, no. You are great Bev. I just…Romeo. So many lines. I was hoping one of the fathers or the smallest role possible. Not the LEAD.” His breathing became staggered from the stress. He tapped his chest trying to keep the panic at bay. “What the hell am I going to do?”

He looked at the group.

“Quit?” Ben asked hopefully.

“We all know you wanted the role, Ben, try to be more subtle.” Mike bumped Ben jokingly.

“Ask for another role?” Stan suggested.

“It’s j-j-just a play,” Bill remarked.

“Hey! We had our first kiss in a play.” Beverly said mocked hurt.

“All of your suggestions are so weak…wait…it’s too calm and chill right now. Where’s trashmouth?” Eddie looked around and spotted Richie talking to Mrs. Lane. They all wandered a little closer to hear the conversation.

“I’ll play any part! Any at all! Or crew? I’ll work the crew. Please, Mrs. Lane!” Richie practically shouted.

“You should have come to the audition, Mr. Tozier.” Mrs. Lane would not even look at Richie. Eddie covered his mouth to hold back laughs.

“I will do anything!” Richie said desperately. Eddie stopped laughing and just stared at Richie. The boy was not kidding around, he was completely serious.

“Fine! You can be in the ensemble. Now stop bothering me.” Mrs. Lane hurried away so as not to be troubled by any more kids.

“Welcome to the cast, Mr. Tozier!” Beverly lightly punched Richie’s shoulder.

“But why – ” Eddie began.

“I had a change of heart. Now the actors outnumber the Losers Club members.” Richie put his hands casually in his pockets and strolled off to class. Eddie watched him go suspiciously.

Week 1 of Rehearsals:

Rehearsals got off to a rocky start. Eddie had a feeling he knew who the saboteur was but could not prove it.

It all started with his script. He lost it the first day, then asked Mrs. Lane for an extra. She told him he was killing trees and to not lose this copy. Then, after he took the time to highlight every line he said, he made the mistake of leaving it in the green room. When he came back, it was on the highest shelf, impossible to get to.

“Who the fuck put it up there?”

“Probably the theatre ghost.” Richie came up from behind putting his elbow on Eddie’s shoulder.

“What are you talking about dipshit?”

Richie lowered his face to Eddie’s ear and whispered, “Didn’t you hear? There used to be a nun that worked here and she died in this very theatre. So whenever people put on shows, she plays pranks on them.”

“Does she now?” Eddie said skeptically, crossing his arms. He was very aware of how his skin was tingling when Richie leaned or touched him in any way. The whispering in his ear gave him goosebumps. They had both been in such a weird place lately, well mostly Eddie was annoyed with Richie, that being this casual once more felt unnatural.  “Well, if I cannot get to my script, I will have to borrow yours.”

Eddie snatched the script from Richie’s other hand and walked off toward rehearsal. That night, he did his best to memorize as much as possible before he lost another script to this ‘ghost’.

Week 2 of Rehearsals:

Eddie grabbed his throat pretending to gag, “O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.”

Eddie hesitated, looking at Beverly’s still face helplessly. He glanced around the stage getting more nervous by the second. The hesitation was turning into a really awkward pause but he could not bring himself to kiss her.

“Eddie! For the last time, KISS HER!” Mrs. Lane yelled, throwing her script vigorously.

“I know! I know! But every time I go in for the kiss, the theatre ghost does something.” He put out his fingers to list off the incidents, “First, a light almost fell on my head. Second, the poison had lemon juice in it and let me tell you, swallowing that much lemon juice at once would give anyone a coughing attack and need to take a break. Third, my costume was covered in peanut butter and jelly. I feel like the ghost is trying to make me their next picnic meal!”

“Eddie, we have to get through this. We have not finished the show ONCE and we open next week.” Mrs. Lane sat heavily in a theatre seat throwing some aspirin in her mouth dry swallowing.

“Fine.” Eddie looked at Beverly who winked before closing her eyes.

“O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” Eddie leaned forward hoping to get the kiss over with fast before anything happened. Suddenly a loud bell rang out indicating the fire alarm had been pulled. He heard the ominous sound of the sprinklers starting. “Oh shit!”

All the kids started screaming and ran out of the auditorium. Eddie helped Beverly up and spotted Richie coming over to them. He was wiping his hand with a cloth but quickly hid it before Eddie could ask what happened.

While they were outside waiting to be let inside, Eddie noticed a spot on the sleeve of Richie’s sweater. Eddie grabbed his wrist.

“What the fuck man!” Richie protested snatching his hand back.

Eddie glared at the taller boy but didn’t say anything. It looked like ink from when you pull a fire alarm.

Opening Night:

Eddie was pacing backstage quietly murmuring his lines. There were so many to remember that he was sure he would freeze up and not be able to go on. Beverly came out looking beautiful in her first dress.

“Are you ready?! I am so excited. Bill came early and saved seats for him, Mike, and Stan in the front row.” She was jumping up and down.

Eddie’s face paled. It was starting to get very real, “I’m going to throw up.” He whispered.

She put a hand on his head and turned him to face her, “You’re going to be great.”

“We haven’t even practiced our kiss! What if it all goes to shit?” He took deep, staggering breathes.

“Don’t worry. We got this. I’m an expert now.” Beverly gave Eddie a quick hug then went to find Ben and Richie to wish them luck or ‘Break a leg’ as Mrs. Lane kept telling them to say. Why would he want to break his leg? Stupid theatre terms.

“Hey pal, you ready?” Eddie jumped at the sound of Richie’s voice, which made Richie laugh. Eddie quickly turned away from him; he refused to engage with him.

“What’s up with you?” Richie said kind of hurt.

“You are what’s up with me,” Eddie growled.

“What did I –”

Eddie cut him off immediately, “Richie, why do you keep sabotaging the show?!”

“I’m not –”

Eddie got right up in Richie’s face, “You are and I want to know why.”

“I’m just having a little fun…”

“It is not fun. I have been learning these lines, stupid fucking blocking, not to mention doing blocking while I say stupid lines, and so has the rest of the cast! If you do anything tonight, I swear I am gonna kill you.” Eddie raised his fist up as threateningly as he could be when he was so much smaller than Richie.

“I…I…” Richie looked so guilty and nervous.

“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS!” Eddie yelled. Someone nearby shushed him.

Richie took Eddie by the wrist and led him to a secluded area, “Because I don’t want you to kiss Beverly!” He whispered harshly.

Eddie yanked his arm away looking at him incredulously, “Who cares? It’s just a kiss.”

Richie’s eyes flashed, “Yeah, but what if you realize you are in love with her and you guys get together and then I’ll never see you anymore and…and…” Richie said this at lightning speed.

“Rich…” Eddie watched his best friend astonished.

“I know I sound crazy. I just don’t want you guys to kiss.” He said barely audible. “We kissed and it fucking meant something to me, even if it clearly didn’t to you.”

Eddie moved closer to Richie and put his hand on the boy’s shoulder. He applied some pressure there before watching his hand slide up to the side of Richie’s head as if controlled by someone else. His hand cupped the boy’s round face and he ran his thumb over Richie’s cheek slowly. Richie leaned his face into the touch, cheeks going pink, and gazed into Eddie’s eyes. Neither was sure who initiated the kiss but their lips bumped together.

Richie tilted his head to gain better access, his glasses jamming into the bridge of his nose from the interaction. Eddie let both his hands reach back and lock behind Richie’s neck. Richie could not control his thrill; he wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist and lifted the boy off the ground spinning them. Eddie squealed into Richie’s lips with surprise but smiled at his ridiculousness.

They pulled apart but kept holding onto each other. “It meant something to me too, ya idiot.”

“Thank fuck,” Richie responded breathlessly.

“Now, can I go on and do this stupid show without you messing everything up?” Eddie looked at him warningly. “I’ll kiss you before and after my scene with Beverly. It’ll be good practice since you made it impossible for me to get it right with her.”

Richie returned the smile, “Yes…I just need to pour out the poison, replace the dagger, and fix one of the legs of the tomb.” Richie ran away.

“Jesus fucking Christ,” Eddie stormed after him.

UK Official Singles Chart Reveals 100 Biggest Songs Of The Decade

The latest end-of-the-decade list comes courtesy of the UK Official Singles Chart, which has revealed the 100 biggest songs of the decade. Of course being UK exclusive, Ed Sheeran tops the list with ease, snagging three of the top ten spots, and nearly four, also taking #11 with “Castle On The Hill.”

Also, being the UK, dance music is far more represented as it regularly plays on the radio, much more so than in the US. To that end, sixteen dance music songs are featured in the top 100 (a few more if you count Clean Bandit as “EDM,” though they’re ostensibly crossover). Calvin Harris receives the most recognition with four songs included in the list: “One Kiss,” “We Found Love,” “This Is What You Came For,” and “How Deep Is Your Love.”

The rest of the dance music on the list features names like Major Lazer, Swedish House Mafia, Mr Probz, and The Chainsmokers. But, the highest on the list, coming in at #13, is Avicii with “Wake Me Up.”
