me and some people from ap bio were judging elementary school science fairs and it fucks me up how many 16 year olds are willing to believe 11 year olds couldnt Possibly know about e. coli or how many ohms are in a resistor. like ohh ok so the reason i believed i was a freak throughout my entire childhood wasnt because i was insecure its because people actually thought that. good to know
#i was like this is a really good foundation because yr understanding of genetics lines up with the shit we do in bio#and someone interrupted to be like YEAHH yr better than a high schooler. a college student even#:(#i try to empathize with how i was in 4th grade#but that was just like 'shut the fuck up. when you accept yr prize its certificate in the left hand medal on the right.#second place is fine and if you wish you got first yr mother will think yr making a scene. smile convincingly because you didnt last time'#kid from my class was like i asked him about the resistor and he ACTUALLY KNEW#YEAH MAN. YOU ASKED HIM. what did you expect#'idk im just a kid please tell me im cute for putting my best effort in. my dad did all the work for me because adults know better 😇😇'#am i the only mf on the planet who didnt get amnesia at 13

Does anyone remember what happened to Radio Shack?
They started out selling niche electronics supplies. Capacitors and transformers and shit. This was never the most popular thing, but they had an audience, one that they had a real lock on. No one else was doing that, so all the electronics geeks had to go to them, back in the days before online ordering. They branched out into other electronics too, but kept doing the electronic components.
Eventually they realize that they are making more money selling cell phones and remote control cars than they were with those electronic components. After all, everyone needs a cellphone and some electronic toys, but how many people need a multimeter and some resistors?
So they pivoted, and started only selling that stuff. All cellphones, all remote control cars, stop wasting store space on this niche shit.
And then Walmart and Target and Circuit City and Best Buy ate their lunch. Those companies were already running big stores that sold cellphones and remote control cars, and they had more leverage to get lower prices and selling more stuff meant they had more reasons to go in there, and they couldn't compete. Without the niche electronics stuff that had been their core brand, there was no reason to go to their stores. Everything they sold, you could get elsewhere, and almost always for cheaper, and probably you could buy 5 other things you needed while you were there, stuff Radio Shack didn't sell.
And Radio Shack is gone now. They had a small but loyal customer base that they were never going to lose, but they decided to switch to a bigger but more fickle customer base, one that would go somewhere else for convenience or a bargain. Rather than stick with what they were great at (and only they could do), they switched to something they were only okay at... putting them in a bigger pond with a lot of bigger fish who promptly out-competed them.
If Radio Shack had stayed with their core audience, who knows what would have happened? Maybe they wouldn't have made a billion dollars, but maybe they would still be around, still serving that community, still getting by. They may have had a small audience, but they had basically no competition for that audience. But yeah, we only know for sure what would happen if they decided to attempt to go more mainstream: They fail and die. We know for sure because that's what they did.
I don't know why I keep thinking about the story of what happened to Radio Shack. It just keeps feeling relevant for some reason.

my ice box is officially deep frozen
all in 7 components swapped, not including the blue indicator led. sounds much fuller now. the shimmer is shifted down and sounds great. surprisingly affordable mod to make a cheap pedal sound expensive
i’ve been watching a lot of gilmore girls lately. and one thing i love is whenever they want to let the audience know that it’s winter time and especially if it’s about to snow, the score switches from its usual tone to the same guitar part played with a very shimmery chorus effect on.
i’m almost positive the specific chorus used was a dod fx64 “ice box” pedal. but the ice box has a sister who was made specifically for bass guitar, the fx63 “deep freeze”. most people seem to prefer the deep freeze, even on guitar. but since the deep freeze is much harder to find and dod is known to have reused circuit paths with slightly different components for different pedals, i’ve been working on finding the exact differences between them, so i can make a deep freeze from an ice box and spend way less money.
the big issue is i can’t find the deep freeze schematics online. the best i found is a side by side guts-shot of the 63 and 64 next to each other, and a pic of a modded 64.
i asked my friend who owns an fx63 to take a picture of the inside for me. and in all my research i’m realizing i might have to tell him that his pedal that he thinks is an fx63 deep freeze , only looks that way on the outside. on the inside it’s an fx64 ice box.
so i’ve got some confirmed info, some unknown and a lot of confusion. but i’ll mod this chorus yet…

side by side (fx63 deep freeze on the left, note the serial #’s

fx64 ice box with mods (note the film box capacitors and metal resistors swapped in)

and finally, on the left my friends supposed fx63 deep freeze, on the right, my newly acquired fx64 ice box. note the matching serial numbers and similar component values which differ from the visible changes in the reference material

today i wanted to borrow my coworkers multimeter (hes away this week but my key also opens his door) but i couldnt find it. so fuck it, im bringing my own to work tomorrow and were doing a little course on electronics.
#tütensuppe#apparently they did a little exercise at school once where they had to build something with lights and stuff#but NO theory on it whatsoever.#like whats a circuit. what does the little v symbol mean. whats a resistor.#we worked w the raspi today and she had fun with the cables even if things kept not working#(major issue: the little sd card with the raspis entire os kept dislodging making it crash)#and i suspect some of the little cables are broken. which is why i wanted the multimeter.

Braking's just accelerating in reverse as long as you don't do it too strongly.
remember the thing about "why exactly do trains make that sound when accelerating"?
why do they make that sound when braking, too
#as in all modern trains have an electric brake which just runs the motors as generators using the same inverters#just operating in a different quadrant of the speed/force diagram#that's why it's called a four quadrant motor controller#the power goes into resistors that turn it into heat or back into the overhead lines if possible#in dc systems like the Netherlands it depends on the specific substation whether this is possible and to what degree#there's also the pneumatic brake for stronger braking and to come to a complete stop#but it has components that slowly wear out over time and the electric brake doesn't#so the software generally is set up to prefer the electric brake if possible#trains#railroads

Yay I'm going to get all Political and angry again.
So pretty much every trans American is probably aware of the Sarah McBride situation at this point, but here's the bullet point summary if needed for anyone else:
Sarah McBride gets elected to the House as the first transgender member of Congress in US history.
Republicans predictably flip their shit. They pass internal rules of conduct that prohibit trans people from using bathrooms of their gender and stating that bathroom use is defined by AGAB. It obviously singles out McBride, but I believe there are trans staffers that are also affected.
McBride issues a statement that she will abide by these rules, and pretty much only use the bathroom directly associated with her physical office. She issues a statement saying she "wasn't elected for bathrooms" and will instead fight in issues that matter, with a milquetoast criticism of Republicans for wasting time on this.
Many trans Americans are predictably scared and disappointed by this, especially because this internal house rule is being used as a blueprint for more extensive laws, including a likely ban on trans people in gendered bathrooms in all federal land and buildings (including, notably for me, national parks. Which breaks my heart, but that's a different rant.)
There's been a lot of disappointment and criticism of McBride over this. The general leftist reaction has been criticism. There's lots of people that have expressed disappointment or rage, including Erin Reed, and also more "personality" type people like Vaush and Jessie Gender.
Now.
I'm disappointed too.
But. And please keep reading before chewing me out for being an apologist.
I think we can all understand that McBride is in an impossible situation. If she fights this too hard, then it vindicates the Republican rhetoric that Dems are crazy trans obsessed leftists. But there's a fear that this will only lead to more infringements of rights for trans people. McBride is completely stuck, and is a junior, freshly elected member of Congress who is trying to figure out how to make her voice the most effective.
I am so, so fucking tired of rights being ceded one by one. So I'm disappointed. But yeah, I understand McBride's statement.
But there's just one tiny. Eeny weeny. Minor. Itty Bitty question having over all of this. Just one little concern.
Where.
The fuck.
Are the rest of the Democrats?!?!?!?
There is a PAINFULLY fucking easy solution to all of this. McBride needs backing, solidarity, and other people to speak for her. If she's worried about her voice being effective, and being branded as the crazy trans representative, then step the fucking up, you spineless liberal slimebags.
AOC is the only one that I know of that has expressed any real opposition or anger. Her statements are getting aaallll the airtime.
But the real story is McBride's sentiment being echoed amongst the entire party. This is absolutely some kind of official platform. The fucking grumbling, milquetoast finger waving and "well I don't like this, but there's nothing to be done! Anyways"
Of fucking course minorites are abandoning the left. The message they're sending is "we'll abandon you with the most pathetic of excuses. We don't give a shit." Trimming groups out of their support one by one.
McBride is doing the impossible calculus of trying to be the most effective on the house floor. It's an insane task for a trans woman. And yeah, she got it wrong this time. But where the fuck is the anger for her cis colleagues? Why the fuck aren't people angry and terrified for everyone that let this shit happen?
As much as people love the narrative of the line wolf resistor, resistance takes coordination, effort, and solidarity. Without that, what would McBride raising opposition even be? One representative against the hundreds of others.
And yeah, of course I didn't expect any better from the Democratic party. But you should be disappointed and mad at your representative, not just McBride.

I believe the reason I decided to study robotics in the first place is that I have always loved romanticizing machinery. There's something endlessly enthralling about robots and how much they both mirror and reveal about us humans. And don't even get me started on the intersection of the two. When biology and mechanics combine…
──────────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────────────
Out of all the Batboys Tim is the one I can see falling for a robot reader the easiest. There is a reference to Pygmalion and Galatea in all of this. A futuristic parody.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake who falls in love with one of his creations. It had been an experiment, a distraction really, something to fidget with during the long hours of the day when neither Tim nor Bruce could bear the suffocation of either life. Insomnia has a habit of running in the veins of the mansion's residents. Haunting them like feral phantoms. Bruce was the one to suggest it. Came up with the idea between screenings of Blade Runner and Her. What if there was someone else, something else. Who could pick up the slack whenever neither of them could. Someone to cover for both Batman AND Bruce Wayne. Red Robin AND Tim Drake…
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who has always found it easier to fall in love with machinery, with the motors that whirl and the computers that speak in tongues of one and zero. It's always easier to love that which you've programmed with your own hands. He glides his fingers over your smooth icy face, pinching your steel cheek with a boyish giggle. He's painstakingly meticulous with how he manipulates the wires of your exposed stomach. Smoothing out the solder, making sure the heat shrinks are snug. There isn't a resistor within you that's been placed carelessly.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who is the first person, the first thing you see when your optics come online. The first person to utter words that float and register within your processor. You are his precious creations, his darling marvel, he built you with pieces of his heart, built you to be perfection. Weeks later you're sitting between his legs as he helps you choose a silicon faceplate. Superficial details really, Tim assures you, just something to help you blend in. He finds the particular shade you chose for your eyes cute. You aren't sure why that makes your processor buzz so quickly and your cooling fans to kick in.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who steals kisses whenever his father and Alfred aren't looking. Who thinks that every human pales in the gleam of your beauty. Finit metal, that knows everything and nothing at the same time. Little robot girl who holds his hand as she asks and researches every enigma within minutes. Some nights Tim can't help but peel away the faux skin. To kiss your wires and your circuits. To make little tweaks to perfection. He whispers a name, your name, while he pecks your frigid iron lips…
But what about Tim with a cyborg reader? What about someone who is the best of both worlds? Indiffenitly entwined.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who spends countless nights slaving away on the perfect imitations of the limbs you have lost. You were once a hero like him, another one of Gotham's beckons whose light was snuffed out by the the evil that roams within this city. You survived a fate much like his brother's only in this story Tim was there to rescue you from death's embrace.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who intwines your nerve ends with wires, at first it feels like sand crawling beneath your skin, gliding through your veins. The phantom pain rings inside your head, a macabre symphony. You close your eyes and command movement, command a thing you thought impossible to miss. Your new fingers twitch your wrist moves. You fall into Tim's chest sobbing as he tries to comfort you. Still, you don't miss the satisfied smile he tries to hide.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who insists on bettering your new body. On adding weapons and gadgets and lavish accessories. Who makes you stand in the lab for hours on end as he tweaks and plays with your cybernetics, who cuts and adds without permission. Who talks and talks about what he's doing and how much he adores you. Despite the pure love lacing each word you can't help but break out in a cold sweat.
✦ Yandere! Tim Drake, who's changed so much of your body. Who's made you forget where the cybernetics end and you begin. Yandere Tim Drake who kisses across the sacred borders of skin and iron. Yandere Tim Drake whose eyes gleam so terrifyingly and joyously when he looks at you. Who dubs you his perfect creation and kisses you so passionately, while you fight the urge to gag.

Yes, punch Nazis.
But remember, one does not simply wake up able to punch Nazis. Punching requires strength training and form. You should sign up for a martial art of some kind and regularly stretch and lift weights. Practice on a punching bag frequently. If you have not already started training to punch Nazis, you should start today.
And this is not just a lesson for literally punching Nazis, this is also a metaphor for punching Nazis. Y'all need to get educated about the issues and get involved. And you need to practice standing up for your deeply held beliefs.
I am a Holocaust / Shoah scholar. When we talk about the Holocaust / Shoah, we talk about 4 categories of people: victims, perpetrators, rescuers / resistors, and BYSTANDERS.
Everyone likes to think they would be a rescuer / resistor AUTOMATICALLY. But you wouldn't. And probably many of you already haven't. And that's ok - I'm not accusing you, but I'm trying to wake you to the fact that most of us have already been quiet bystanders too many times. It takes active, daily work to move from bystander to rescuer / resistor.
One does not simply wake up able to punch Nazis. But if you start educating yourself, you will find yourself equipped with knowledge needed to spot Nazism / Facism where you see it. If you get out and involved with community groups that are part of the resistance: IN ANY FACET OF THE FIGHT YOU FEEL MOVED BY (queer rights, womens rights, health care, climate change, immigrant rights, financial inequality, workers rights, free Palestine / Congo / Sudan, etc - the fight is on MANY FRONTS), you will learn how to speak about and stand for your rights. You will learn what systems and networks you have access to that can help victims (including yourself!) who are in danger.
The Bystander Effect is STRONG. It takes knowing how to break through your own conditioned responses to stay silent and uninvolved when you see crisis of any kind.
Resistance is ACTIVE and DIFFICULT work. But it is work that needs doing and that is worth doing. So start stretching and strength training today. We're going to need you.

If you happen to be taking requests for bruce banner I would love to see him x reader where reader keeps messing up something and calling themselves dumb and he’s just like no don’t say that (does that make sense, I really hope that makes sense)
HOW DID I MANAGE TO FORGET JUST HOW FINE THIS MAN WAS? LIKE, HONESTLY, HE LOOKS LIKE A BIG SOFTIE AND I WANNA CUDDLE THE FUCK OUTTA HIM...Anyway, I get what you mean and I hope you enjoy how it turned out :) Even if it is kinda short...
You Can't Badmouth Yourself
pairing: bruce banner x gender neutral reader tags: short work, but I really like how it turned out, kind and supportive bruce, comedic elements, you can't badmouth yourself, bruce doesn't let you
You’re sprawled on the lab floor, knees scuffed, surrounded by a crime scene of fallen circuit boards and scattered micro‑screws. The prototype gamma sensor you and Bruce spent two evenings building lies in pieces between your sneakers, still blinking in pathetic little sparks.
“Great,” you mutter, rubbing the bridge of your nose. “Way to go, dumbass—can’t even hold a screwdriver the right way.”
From behind you comes the soft scrape of loafers and the gentle jingling of Bruce’s ID badge. “Hey,” he calls, voice light but firm, “let’s cool it with the name‑calling.”
You shoot him a sheepish look. “I’m not calling anyone names but me.”
“Exactly,” he says, crouching beside you. His cardigan sleeve brushes your arm, warm even in the AC‑chilled lab. “And that’s not allowed around here, remember?” He plucks a resistor off your shirt like lint. “You’re my partner—you don’t get to bad‑mouth my favorite scientist.”
“Pretty sure Stark’s got that title locked down,” you mumble, cheeks hot.
Bruce smiles, slow and lopsided. “Tony’s a different category. He’s chaos wrapped in a metal tux. You’re…” He gestures vaguely, searching for language precise enough. “You’re the reason I remember to eat lunch.”
Your laughter comes out half‑embarrassed, half‑fond. “Lunch is important.”
“So is the way you talk about yourself.” His tone dips, earnest now. “I spent years hating who I was. Trust me: once you start saying those things, it’s easy to believe them.”
You swallow. “But I literally broke our sensor.”
He twirls a tiny screw between thumb and forefinger. “And now we know the torque spec on these casings is too low. Scientific discovery through glorious disaster.” His grin widens. “Besides, I like building things with you twice. Means I get twice the time with you.”
You can’t fight the smile creeping onto your face. “You’re impossible.”
“Only statistically improbable,” he counters, leaning in to brush a strand of hair—oil‑smudged—out your face. “Tell you what: we’ll rebuild together. You hold, I solder. Then later I’ll cook. And if you insult my partner again, I’ll be forced to unleash the Other Guy’s most terrifying weapon.”
Your eyes widen. “Oh?”
“Relentless affirmations,” he deadpans. “‘You’re brilliant!’ Smash. ‘You make the best coffee in the compound!’ Smash. It’ll be carnage.”
You snort. “Okay, okay—I surrender.”
“Good.” He presses a quick kiss to your lips; he tastes faintly of peppermint tea. “Ready to give it another go?”
You exhale, rolling your shoulders back. “Yeah. Together?”
“Always.”

Your Mechanical Engineering Classmate Sylus

Best believe their classmates’ eyes are practically falling out of their sockets when Y/N skips—yes, skips—next to Sylus, and he just… lets her. No complaints, no eye-rolls, just vibes. And the final nail in the coffin? When they catch him personally inspecting her absolutely feral, bacon-scented disaster of a project, and instead of judging, he casually pulls out his own premium-grade materials and lets her dig through them like it's a Black Friday sale.
Never in a million years did anyone expect to see Sylus—Mr. Minimal Interaction, Mr. “Don’t talk to me unless you’re a professor or a spreadsheet”— personally helping someone. Out of his own will. The guy is known for doing his work, avoiding unnecessary human contact, and vanishing like a ghost the moment class ends. The only time he helps is when a professor forces his hand. So to see him not only helping someone—but doing it with patience, using his own premium materials, no less—is nothing short of a divine phenomenon.
And Y/N in the middle of all this? O B L I V I O U S. Just her usual sunshine self, happily digging through Sylus’ sacred stash of materials like it’s a buffet, yapping away about some Twitter gossip she randomly saw. Sylus? Barely blinks. Occasionally snatches something out of her hand when she grabs the wrong tool and silently replaces it with the right one—but never once interrupts her rambling. Not even when she starts theorizing about how their professor might be running a cursed Arduino black market on the side.
In his head: Why the hell did she take this major again?
Out loud: “Oh really? Then what happened—wrong resistors, here you go. So what was that about prof selling hexed kits?”

Steve Clark Traffic Warlock cosplay

Alright, gave up on making my own robe from scratch. Honestly, the poncho doesn't look too bad as is, so I think cutting and sewing to give it sleeves is low on the priority list (though I might see about making just sleeve extensions if the fabric I got for the first version is a close enough match). I'm not a fan of the front pocket, but I suspect I'd make a mess of things trying to remove it.
I think next up is wiring up LEDs for the glowing eyes, then making one of the props: either the traffic light staff or the tire backpack.
I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to electronics, but I figure I'll need to get some object that takes batteries and exposes leads, a switch, some wire (what gauge?) and probably a resistor, then tape the LEDs to my glasses I guess?
For the prop, I'm more confident in my ability to make the staff than the backpack, and I think the the staff is more iconic, but the practical side of me would much rather wear a backpack around a convention than carry a top-heavy staff around for 4 days.

I have a guess as to what may be revealed in the future, Molly dropped out of Hogwarts didn't she? She never graduated? If her brothers died when she was young, how could she ever have the will to graduate after that? And then she couldn't really get a job because she had no qualifications despite being an extraordinary witch. It made her dependent on Arthur financially even though she loved raising her kids. So she really wanted her kids to finish school and take it seriously. IDK. I feel like this makes sense! She prob never expected Ginny to return for her last year and was surprised (and proud) when Ginny wanted to. 🥺
ahh this is such juicy compelling headcanon, anon, but i think the timelines don't add up. fabian and gideon prewett had to have died in mid/late 1981, as they appear in the order photograph that was taken two weeks before the death of the mckinnons (both marlene and the prewetts are in the photo, and we know the mckinnons are killed just before lily and james themselves are murdered). this means that at the least all of the weasley children bar ginny had been born by the time fabian and gideon are killed, so molly couldn't have been at school at the time.
that said... i think you are right that we should cut molly a lot more slack in trying to make sure her children get on in life, do well in school and make something of themselves in terms of sourcing a stable livelihood that doesn't have them socially discounted. for me, one of the most interesting things about molly is that she is consistently torn between her stalwart commitment to the moral cause that the order represents and also acutely aware that life is going to be hard on her children because of their family's reputation, and the need to overcompensate for it through academic achievement and securing stable employment. there are several hints in the series that molly does come from some level of wizarding aristo background/faded grandeur - muriel's priceless goblin heirlooms, her big house and the promise of an inheritance - and that it is the weasley side of the family that is responsible for the broke blood traitor reputation.
i think, given these hints, we can assume that molly and her big brothers had a strong principled objection to pure blood supremacy and to the death eaters during the first wizarding war, and sacrificed a great deal fighting in its name. but it shouldn't be surprising that molly, a character who seems to have given up some amount of financial stability and pureblood safety to marry arthur and join the anti-voldemort resistance, would be aware of what it is to be without money and how much one might need a safety net as part of a family marked as armed resistors and political radicals.
would molly be proud of ginny going back to school? it is a really nice idea. a few times in early(ish) chapters of beasts i have ginny mentally justify her going back in reference to what her mum would want. but i knew i wanted a different arc for molly and for ginny's relationship with her mum. when we finally do see molly in chapter 9, not just in flashbacks but in the flesh, you can see that ginny's difficult decision to go back to school is the last thing on molly's mind; that the part of molly weasley that fretted and cajoled and lovingly nagged her children died with fred, and ginny has been in denial, engaging in wishful thinking because she hasn't really wanted to confront that her mother may never be in a fit state to fret and cajole and nag her ever again. she is trying to make her mum proud, for sure - but, increasingly, as she accepts her mother will never be the same again, her motivations shift away from maternal pressure to wanting to make life a little bit easier and more bearable for her mum knowing she is trying to set her life straight and build enough material comfort not to have to worry about surviving.
sorry for that bummer! to end on a lighter, if grumpier note... i've said this before so forgive me getting back on this soapbox, but i also don't buy the arguments of the 'molly weasley get a job' tiktok brigade, who seem to grow in number every passing week. i know you're absolutely not saying this, anon, but it comes up a lot in the online discourse, and i do think it is broadly bullshit and worth consistently critiquing. until 1991 molly is doing a huge amount of childcare full-time. once ginny goes to hogwarts, we don't know that molly does nothing for any money - she is a famously industrial knitter! - but also can assume that, after that long without formal employment in a very hierarchical (and misogynistic) society, it might be quite difficult for her to just glibly rejoin the workforce (this is, in fact, a common feature of most modern economies where the burden of childcare still falls on women; it's also clear that in lots of wizarding families women don't work at all after having children). molly also clearly lives on a property with a large amount of land and substantial upkeep requirements (have you ever kept chickens? they are a fucking minimum twice daily ballache).
it's also worth saying that the weasleys don't actually need any more money to pay for basic essentials. that they provide everything their children (and their friends) actually need whenever they need to: they just lack a great deal of discretionary income to splash the cash on material goods. and that's fine! sorry! teenagers are allowed to sulk that they have some secondhand stuff, sure. but it isn't actually material deprivation or a moral failing to reuse stuff you have and not be able to afford elite-level sporting equipment for your children. even if molly weasley never took up paid work outside the home ever in her life, i don't think anyone can reasonably claim she did not undertake essential labour. and, as of summer 1995, it is clear molly is doing missions for the order (canon is clear!), while also feeding and housing and clothing a great chunk of the wartime resistance. seems harder than most other wizarding jobs, to me!

Ohhh Sunrise on the Reaping….
The theme about Capitol propaganda fully controlling the narrative of the games, and you compare what happened in SotR to what we were told about Haymitch’s games in previous books…
And then the themes about not starting a revolution even when you have the means or possibility. Which is due to the propaganda that says that there is no possibility of change- things will always stay the same and the sun will always rise (the reaping will always happen). Haymitch wasn’t even the beginning of the revolution, there has always been rebels, resistors, but revolutions take time, the right people, and luck.
It makes me think about how, in real life present day, we see tragedies all of the time but believe that nothing can be done about them. We take the propaganda at face value and think that there is nothing that we can do about it, just a drop in the bucket. But there is change that we can enact, work to be done.
