I've been drawing to much cute stuff lately, so here's some outtakes from day six of The Cage.

I'm a big fan of hurt/comfort tropes where the hurt is ongoing and escalating. Characters trying to cope with their situation and insisting that it's fine, they're fine, even as things get worse and worse and worse - especially if no one around them knows what they're going through.

Characters hiding their illness, even as they grow sicker and sicker. Characters trying to cope as their homelife becomes increasingly abusive or neglectful. Characters ignoring their injuries, only for them to become infected. Characters being stalked/ tormented by a villain and pretending that everything is fine, even as the villain continues escalating. Characters left homeless as winter approaches and their money dwindles.

I could go on. There's something very satisfying about seeing a character frantically trying to pretend like everything is okay until eventually they can't hide it anymore and get caught (and helped) by the people around them.

a disorientated whumpee at a party with whumper's arm uncomfortably thrown over their shoulder. Whumper’s fingers ghost over the curve of their throat, dipping along the scars on their exposed neck.

There's a spiraling fear that they can't quite name-- they're losing themself in this nightmare of insinuating whispers.

The music is pounding and Whumpee can feel it in their teeth.

Whumper pulls them into a dark corner to push a drink up to their lips. "Your friends are coming," Whumper's voice is low, it's calm, it's measured, and Whumpee's skin crawls. "You're going to tell them you want to stay with me."

"No--"

"Or one of them will take your place."

Whumpee has fallen asleep cuddled against Caretaker's chest while Caretaker is still awake

Caretaker notices that Whumpee's body has stiffened against them and Whumpee is slowly, almost imperceptibly, retreating their clenched fists closer to their own body. There's a small frown creasing between Whumpee's eyebrows - they must be having a nightmare. Caretaker gently traces their thumb along their furrowed brow, meaning to comfort them, but Whumpee flinches and their breath hitches and Caretaker realizes they're awake and frightened. Caretaker remembers with a sinking feeling what Whumpee had said about being forced to share a bed with Whumper.

“Shhh, hey…it’s just me. It's okay.”

Whumpee's eyes open cautiously and they peek up at Caretaker beneath their lashes. When they see it really is Caretaker, the tension melts off their face and they sigh gratefully, nuzzling against Caretaker.

“You're safe. You can go back to sleep.” Caretaker murmurs, and Whumpee let their eyes close again. Within a couple minutes, they're asleep again.

In the scene with Theo’s fake parents, I think the way he speaks to them is really interesting. He’s not playing the normal, kind boy trying to help the pack, but he’s still playing a role; he seems to be imitating the Dread Doctors.

He uses passive voice (“You were told” instead of “I told you”) to put distance between himself and the situation like the Doctors do. It also puts all of the onus on the “you.” It makes them seem more like an inevitable force instead of people choosing their actions. In an interview, Cody talked about how villains don’t think they’re the villain and how Theo does what he thinks is necessary, which goes along with that. The man didn’t follow orders, so Theo is just giving him the natural consequence of his actions. Failed perfection.

His general vibe can come off as a bit sadistic in this scene, especially upon first watch, but I don’t think that’s the truth of it. He’s cold and not open to mercy; his voice is flat and leaves no room for argument. He’s expectant. It’s not really enjoyment. That flatness comes naturally for the Dread Doctors, who are genuinely apathetic and already covered with their suits and masks. It’s less natural on Theo. There’s almost certainly frustration beneath it, because Theo hates to lose, but that’s not the focus. This is just the process of things that the Doctors had ingrained in him for 8 years: you fail, you get fixed.
