Consecration of the Seat of Spirit:

Inspired by dreams and visions, I began the process of creating this new ritual tool. Where this chair serves as a receptacle for receiving spirits, allowing them to manifest in this seat.

I came across this child sized rocking chair at a thrift store, and immediately knew it was the one. The people working in the shop told me this chair had been there since before they were hired, and they never expected to see it go. But for only $6 it became mine.

To consecrate this spiritual throne, it was washed with water imbued with willow and blessed under the full moon, anointed with a Serpent Oil of my own design, and dressed in smoke & powders before being fed. Finally, a spirit in my court who has dominion over gates and spiritual passages was invited to be the first to sit and empower this seat.

Im beyond excited to begin putting it to daily use.

Is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury the first anime series to depict a married same-sex couple?

Given the rings and comments from the staff (excluding Bandai) it's pretty clear that both Suletta and Miorine are married. And looking at older anime couples I can't find another one where the characters are actually married to one another.

There are series that depict engagements and proposals (implied or otherwise with queer characters).

Some examples would be:

Yuri & Viktor from Yuri on Ice, where it's implied that they want to be engaged.

Ranma & Akane from Ranma 1/2, both find themselves in an arranged engagement but end up falling for each other anyway. Ranma is canonically genderfluid in both the anime and manga and Akane is attracted to Ranma as both a man and a woman. And this is ignoring all of Ranma's other fiances who know about their curse and want to be in a relationship with them anyway.

Utena & Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena, while the circumstances of their engagement are out of their control, the two of them fall deeply in love with one another despite that. And in the movie they kiss.

Other LGBT anime couples are together or in love but next explicitly depicted as engaged or married would be:

Michiru Tenou & Haruka Kaiou from Sailor Moon, they are very much together and in the Crystal series end up living together and adopting a baby.

Yukito Tsukishiro & Touya Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura, who are in love with one another.

Eiji Okumura & Ash Lynx from Banana Fish, who are in love with one another. And it hurts.

Yuu Koito & Touko Nanami from Bloom Into You, who are two girls who fall in love with one another. And in the story you watch them grow and get closer.

Nezumi & Shion from No. 6, a sci-fi drama where two boys fall in love. This one also hurts.

And countless other examples, none of which I could find have the characters taking their relationship further than dating or engagement.

So, is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury the first married same-sex couple in anime?

On a minor note, there have been several gay weddings depicted in manga.

Some examples would be:

Our Dreams At Dusk by Yuhki Kamatani, which was written by an asexual, X-gender author.

Until I Meet My Husband by Ryousuke Nanasaki and illustrated by Yoshi Tsukizuki. This manga was written by a gay man and based on his own essays about his life. The manga is auto-biographical.

I Married My Best Friend To Shut My Parents Up by Kodama Naoko, who has written several other LGBT manga, most of which are Yuri.

And there are several more!

Shoutout to Episode 7 of the 80s anime Dirty Pair for having a wedding between a cis man and a trans woman in one episode.

I'll be honest with you: as a web developer this makes all my hair stand on end. BUT! Yes, this totally works and you can build a website like this!

So I just want to add a tiny little tip: if you look at this website on a small screen, everything will be zoomed down. That may be fine for the images, but it's not for the text. Here's a screenshot to show you what I mean:

So to make your website mobile friendly (or friendlier anyway), I propose a couple of simple changes:

Add the following line to the meta tags in the head definition: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> (line 4 in my screenshot)

In the style definitions, change "width: 900px" to "max-width: 900px" (line 11)

Then right after that remove "padding: 40px" and instead write "width: 94%" (line 11)

And that's it! The result should look like this:

Congratulations, your website is now mobile friendly. Please never make me look at the source code.

Going to put all this in its own post too by popular request: here's how you make your own website with no understanding of HTML code at all, no software, no backend, absolutely nothing but a text file and image files! First get website server space of your own, like at NEOCITIES. The free version has enough room to host a whole fan page, your art, a simple comic series, whatever! The link I've provided goes to a silly comic that will tell you how to save the page as an html file and make it into a page for your own site. The bare minimum of all you need to do with it is JUST THIS:

Change the titles, text, and image url's to whatever you want them to be, upload your image files and the html file together to your free website (or the same subfolder in that website), and now you have a webpage with those pictures on it. That's it!!!!! .....But if you want to change some more super basic things about it, here's additional tips from the same terrible little guy:

Your website can be nothing but a big ugly deep fried JPEG of goku with a recipe for potato salad on it, no other content ever, who cares! We did that kind of nonsense all the time in the 1990's and thought it was the pinnacle of comedy!! Maybe it still can be?!?! Or maybe you just want a place to put some artwork and thoughts of yours that doesn't come with the same baggage as big social media? Make a webpage this way and it will look the same in any browser, any operating system for years and years to come, because it's the same kind of basic raw code most of the internet depends upon!

Now here comes my rant: Ellipsus, I love you, but I can’t let this stand. Vivaldi and Brave are both browsers, and as such alternatives to Chrome, not Google as a search engine. Now, Brave has some controversies, and Vivaldi is chromium-based and so does not do much to challenge Google in that respect. So if you want to avoid Google on the browser front, ditch Chrome and all derivatives and use Firefox.

The situation on the search engine front is not quite as dire, but alternatives that do their own crawling are also rare. Here’s an excellent interactive map that shows you which search engine uses which database:

This just made me realise that Brave also offers a search function, but it’s using Google’s database so my point mostly still stands (and if you go to brave.com it’s not super obvious).

Am I telling anyone not to use Brave? No. I’m mostly saying that many people won’t do their own research (for all sorts of reasons), so the more reach you have the better you should research stuff for your posts. Also please provide image descriptions.

By the way, the search engine map is made by Mojeek, a fairly recent, independent search engine still building their own database. I use it as my standard search engine, and then often redo the search in another to get more fitting results – but the results can be very interesting and usually different, and I like to keep an eye on how this develops.

In conclusion, support small and especially open source alternatives to Google wherever you can! Also today is incidentally I love Free Software Day, and Ellipsus really is great!

a short German poem

So this is primarily for @couchie, but I thought other people might like it too. Here’s a short poem in German that is fairly easy to understand, and I am going to try to explain/translate in Turkish as well!

It’s by Erich Kästner (which I actually didn’t know, I thought it was by Heinz Ehrhardt), who had a lot of clever, witty things to say. I like it because its dry wit helps put things in perspective, and it’s short enough to whip it out in all kinds of situations.

So here’s the poem, along with a reading:

Wird’s besser? Wird’s schlimmer? Fragt man alljährlich. Seien wir ehrlich: Leben ist immer Lebensgefährlich.

I shall translate line by line:

Wird’s besser? Wird’s schlimmer? Daha iyi oluyor? Daha kötü oluyor? (Is it getting better? Is it getting worse?)

Fragt man alljährlich. Her sene soruluyor. (People ask every year.)

Seien wir ehrlich: Dürüst olalım: (Let’s be honest:)

Leben ist immer Lebensgefährlich. Yaşamak her zaman hayat için tehlikeli. (Living is always life-threatening.)

As for line 2, I am not sure how to do the vague/generalising third person singular in Turkish. “Soruluyor” gets the meaning well I think. And I absolutely need a new dictionary! Also I’m being super literal with the last line so you get the punchline, I reckon you wouldn’t really say it like that in Turkish.

1. Parker and Hardison - Leverage

The absolute sweetest couple maybe ever. The way Hardison just... loves Parker, without ultimatums or impatience. Just there once she's ready to meet his feelings with her own. And Parker, knowing she's developed feelings for... 'pretzels' and admitting it in the only way she can initially. So good.

Talk about ripping out my heart. In a story built around two people more trapped by fate than anyone, they save each other by doing the one thing fate has no say over.

(I usually prefer my romances to be the B and C plots, but these two? They are the exception that proves the rule. This whole show is their love story and I was spellbound for 36 episodes straight).

So. Much. Pining. And the inclusion of the cruelest 'I love you' known to man, because who doesn't love a good 'I've been shot, and the guy who shot me just let me call my girlfriend but I'm using the call to give out clues about how to find me, so I'm pretending you're Abigail, but he's listening and he wants me to tell you that I love you and I know... think... suspect... that saying it will hurt you, but I don't have a choice and I'm so sorry'.

Oh by the gods, it really is time for everyone to care about tech stuff. I want you all to know that there are degoogled versions of Android as well as other alternative phone operating systems, and I encourage you absolutely to consider getting one!

I’ve been running /e/OS on a Fairphone 3 for almost four years now, and yes that was an investment, but it is really paying off SO much I can’t even tell you. I also know people who use lineageOS and Graphene and are happy with those. If you want to install one of these on a device yourself that can be a serious hassle, but I just bought mine pre-installed and like I said, extremely worth the investment. You may also find someone to help you with it, I know there’s a group in Berlin dedicated to doing just that.
