January Week 1
Welcome welcome to the 2024 Grimoire Challenge! Time to really get started everyone! This week will have a lot of stuff all jammed in. So buckle up, grab your grimoire and your supplies, and let’s get to work!
Monday
Name your book - this may seem silly and you definitely don’t need to name your book. Not properly at least. Other than “my grimoire” or “book of shadows” or what have you, which is totally fine. But some of us might feel the need to give it a proper title. “The Basil Grimoire” or “Hazel’s Handwritten Workings” something, anything, that ties the book to you and your craft. Make a title page! If you feel so inclined. If not, that’s fine too.
Definitions (New Page) - ritual and spell. Let’s define a few things. Make a page specifically for definitions, that we’ll add to through the challenge. Let’s start with a couple simple definitions. Define spell. And define ritual. Within the confines of magic, witchcraft and your practice. What is a spell? What is a ritual? What are the differences?
Study (herb) - Pick another herb from that list we made, and dig into the details. Make a page for it on its own, or add its info to another page! Whatever works for your craft. The questions to ask for these study prompts are going to continue to remain the same. Where did it come from, where does it grow, how does it grow, what are its mundane and practical uses. What are the myths and legends and stories surrounding the herb? What are its magical properties and why/ how do you think the other information you've learned about it have influenced its magical associations?
Tuesday
Outline/ index (New Page!) - it helped me a great deal to have an index or outline to my grimoire. I started this as a file on my computer as my grimoire grew and changed I could more easily manage it and rearrange it as I saw fit. Then eventually I could make it into a handwritten copy.
Study (gem) - Like our herb prompt, the gem prompts are going to always use the same outline and questions. Where does the gem come from? What is it used for in a practical and mundane sense? What are its physical properties? What are any myths, legends or stories? Where and how does it form? How does all of that relate to its magical correspondences and what does the herb mean to and for you in your craft?
Spellwriting 101 (New Page!) - make a new page dedicated to spellwriting. This is going to be one of those prompts that is focused on you and your craft. How do you write spells? How do you set them up? What components do you use? What is the format? How is it done? What does it require? From materials to timing and circumstances? Write it all out in your lab notebook. Make it a work in progress. Not all spells are going to work out the same or function the same as you perform them, but having a general layout and method helps to focus your practice.
Wednesday
Common tools - What are the common tools in your craft? That is, you don't need to have a list of every single tool ever used in witchcraft, just the tools that you use in yours. Both regularly and less regularly. What are they used for specifically? What purposes do they serve in the magical and practical sense? Are they ceremonial and symbolic or do they serve an actual physical purpose? (i.e. a wand used to direct energy serves many purposes, while an incense burner could literally just be that, an incense burner)
Year outline/ calendar - not everyone celebrates the same days, holidays or even the same holidays the same way. What are the special occasions and days in your calendar? Mark them and when the proper season/ holiday comes around, we can make pages dedicated to those days. This week this will simply be a list of these days, while later we will actually make pages for them individually. Think of it like the Wheel of the Year, Yule to Midsummer and so on. What days are important to you and your practice? Are they actual holidays? Or simply days of power like the full moon? Or is it simply days that are significant for other reasons, like the anniversary of the day you began practicing witchcraft?
Practical - tool usage - practice using your tools. For example if you use a wand. Practice using it to direct energies or whatever it is you utilize it for.
Thursday
Altar design/ work space (New Page!) - make a page dedicated to your altar and its setup. Why are things where they are? The reasoning can be simple as “that’s where it fits” or you can give it a more meaningful reason. Candles in front of or behind something to represent some purpose. Do you have items that represent the elements? Deities? Different sources of power or directionality? Different colors for different meanings? Why is your altar the way it is?
Practical - cleansing space - practice cleansing your space and tools. This is of course a physical and 'energetic' cleansing. Tidy it up, redecorate your space, clean the tools if they have dust or ash or anything on them. Sometimes it is good to have a clean start.
Friday
Personal practices - this is just a thought provoking prompt tied in with the Journal prompt below. What are some of your personal practices that you've brought into your witchcraft? Anything from little habits from your every day life to things brought from religion or family traditions. No matter how hard we try, we carry within us echoes of things not related to our practices into it. And that is totally okay. Recognizing them, acknowledging them, and truly incorporating them can be a huge step toward understanding ourselves, our beliefs and our practices all around.
Journal/ introspective/ meditations - Think about the above and write any of it down that you come to terms with. Self understanding is important in and outside of witchcraft.
Thank you all and I hope this week's prompts aren't too overwhelming! Stay tuned next week for the next set of prompts!

May Week 3 - Shadow Work and Retrograde
Hello hello everyone and welcome to another week of the 2022 Grimoire Challenge! This week we’re gonna be looking into Shadow Work and its part in our personal lives and in our practice! As well as that dreaded Mercury Retrograde, along with some other fun topics!
So, without further posturing on my part, let us begin!
Part 1 - What is Shadow Work?
Make a page in your lab notebook, or journal, whichever is fine, where we’re going to define shadow work. What is it? Where did it start? Who coined the term? What are ‘shadows’? Dig deep into what shadow work is, before jumping into doing it.
Now that we know what it is, how do we perform shadow work? What are some methods for doing it? How does one go about facing their shadows? What can we learn and unlearn from doing shadow work? What things can be helpful or harmful when performing shadow work?
The more you know about shadow work, the world you live in, and yourself, the better you’re going to be at performing shadow work. This can be a heavy topic and a difficult thing to perform. Make sure you’re ready to truly observe and look at yourself and your life/ choices before you jump into the next part.
Part 2 - Facing the Shadows
Now that you know what shadow work is, and a little about how to go about it. This part of the challenge is going to be to start some shadow work. I say start, because doing shadow work isn’t a one off, one time, one day thing. It is a process that can take days, months, or even years.
So after looking up what shadow work is, what things in your life do you need to work on. What shadow work do you need to do in your own life?
Start the process now, or whenever you feel ready. We’ll circle back to this topic a few times through the rest of the year to see what progress we have all made!
Part 3 - Meditation/ Journal
This goes along with the above. When you start your shadow work, meditate on it, and then journal where you’re at mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually at the start of this process. How do you feel? Why do you feel that way? Where do your thoughts and emotions linger? How do your actions follow suit and/ or need to change?
Take time to do this. Sit with yourself, truly sit with yourself and look long and hard at yourself in the mirror both literally and metaphorically, in an attempt to better understand yourself.
Growth and change happens slowly over time, both good and bad, and in order for our shadow work to be successful we must take the time to look inward and outward to see ourselves in our personal world and in the greater world and the effects those two things have on one another and how they influence each other.
Part 4 - That Damned Retrograde
So this doesn’t have to be specific to Mercury Retrograde, but since it is currently in the stars, why not look it up. What is it? What does it mean? How does it work? What/ who does it affect and how?
How often does it occur? Do you feel it? Or are you only aware of it when someone else mentions it?
What stock do you take in astrology, if any? Do you feel the stars truly influence us or is it all arbitrary? I’m not one to judge anyone’s beliefs about anything, and this challenge is about helping you form a basis to grow from within our craft. So, use this as a baseline to build on to your beliefs, a place to start or continue learning from. The more we understand about ourselves, the better.
Part 5 - Navigating Planetary Changes
How do you navigate changes in the planetary alignments? Do they influence your life at all? Is it an actual thing, or do you feel a belief in the thing creates the chaos it inspires?
What other planetary movements do you know of? What others do you wish to know about? Make a list and look them up. What planetary alignments do you feel most connected and drawn to? How do they influence you?
Take your time with this one. Astrology is a huge topic to cover. So don’t feel obligated to limit this to one single day, or even one single page!
Part 6 - Fun activity
Since summer is basically here, get outside. Pick some flowers, Take a walk. Go for a swim! Plant something in your garden if you have one! Eat some fresh fruit. Lay in the grass and feel the sun on your skin. Just go enjoy being outdoors for a few minutes.
Enjoy this week’s challenge prompts and look forward to more!

Just in time for Samhain (Vetrnaetr)!
This challenge is meant for you to develop your bond with a chosen deity, or deities. Indeed, you can use it to honor as many deities as you want. You could choose a single deity to devote this challenge to, or you can switch it up as you go and devote certain days to certain deities! Since this challenge’s goal is to improve one’s connection to a deity/deities, it won’t require of you to do any active magical work or elborate ritual. These are all simple actions that can fit into your schedule easily. Enjoy!
Day 1: Draw a symbol of the chosen deity on your skin so that you feel closer to them throughout the day. If you don’t feel comfortable drawing, then simply write their name instead!
Day 2: Meditate on a picture or multiple pictures of your chosen deity in adoration. Notice what feelings the picture/pictures evoke and take them in.
Day 3:  Read a myth or myths that pertain to the chosen deity, even if you’ve read them multiple times in the past! Re-discover them as if it were your first time. It’s always useful to approach myths with a fresh eye!
Day 4: Sincerely tell them about your day, or a current concern. If you can, light them a candle during this process!
Day 5: Devote a song, poem or dance to the chosen deity. Even a whispered song/poem works, as long as you put your heart into it and verbally dedicate it to the deity.
Day 6: Take a little moment to sit outside and listen to some music that reminds you of them. Clear your mind of any other thought and simply think about them. Such an activity is akin to meditation.
Day 7: List out reasons you admire and love them, and bury the paper in the earth, in order to keep these thoughts close to you.
Day 8: List out areas of your life where you would appreciate their assistance. You are free to go as specifically as you want. Then, through prayer, humbly share this wish with them.
Day 9: Either pour them a glass of wine (or any drink they would appreciate, depending on their tastes and what you have access to), and/or save them a part of your meal as offering.
Day 10:  Add something new to your altar! If you don’t already have an altar, simply assemble a few items which are specific to the chosen deity (honey, milk, leaves found outside, anything, really) and leave them as an overnight offering. On a windowsill for example, or hidden if you want to be discreet.
Day 11:  Engage in an activity which you like (cooking, hiking, drawing, etc...) and invite them to join you!
Day 12: Build them a temple! Either mentally, like during meditation, by drawing it, or even using a website or game!
Day 13: Pick a kenning/epithet, or nickname that is associated with this deity and reflect on it. Why are they described that way? How do you feel about that aspect of them? How does this aspect affect your vision of the deity? Etc…
Day 14: Draw or paint the way you picture them, either physically or using sites like Picrew. Feel free to get creative, as long as the image feels right!
Day 15: For the entire day, truly embody one of their values, or tastes. Are they associated with knowledge? Then be curious: ask questions, research on a topic which interests you, watch a documentary, etc... Are they a deity of the hearth and family? Then have a little fun time with your family, or the ones you live with! Take the opportunity to talk to your loved ones, or even bond. These can be considered devotional activities. Now, a simple way to approach this challenge is to simply ask yourself: what does this deity like, and what do they dislike?
Day 16:  Create them a short little chant, something you can whisper in situations where you want to be reminded of them (like in moments of stress, fear, or sadness, for example). Examples: “Víðarr, silent one, be with me”, or “Kind Sif, protect me”, etc...
Day 17: Think about this deity’s influence on your life. The way you experienced their presence, at what sorts of moments do they manifest themselves, what have they helped you with… If none of these apply, then simply think of how you expect them to manifest, and what sort of part you believe they play in your life.
Day 18:   Offer them something which means a lot to you. For example: a childhood toy, a recipe your mother used to make, a souvenir from your most treasured trip abroad, etc... Take the time to explain to them why it’s important to you, and why you wish to share it with them.
Day 19:  List out things you are grateful to them for. Specific things that pertain to you and your life, or general areas where they benefit to mankind (prosperity of the land, inspiration for artists, etc...).
Day 20: Last day of the challenge! Either write down or share on this platform what you have learned from this experience. In the light of this challenge, what would you say this deity means to you? Have your views on them changed, and if so, how do you perceive them now? What do you plan on doing to honor them next? What do you think are your favorite means to bond with this deity/deities? Basically, just share or acknowledge the work that has been done in order to get closer to this deity, or deities. You have done well, and your deity/deities are proud of you!

Bonus Prompt - Seasonal Magic
Okay everyone, with the changing of the seasons and an eclipse on the way, let’s take a look at the different seasons and how they influence our practices. If you feel so inclined, make a page for each individual season, or if you can fit all you’re going to put on the page on a single page, just do one.
What does each individual season mean to you on a personal level? What does each one represent?
Do the seasons influence the kind of magic you can/ do perform?
Do you have certain rituals that only happen in each season?
What associations does each season have? Animals, tools, plants, feelings, everything!
What months/ days encompass these seasons?
How do the transitional periods between the seasons influence you and your practice? When are the transitional periods? What marks the transitions between them?
What kinds of activities do you do, both magical and mundane, that pertain to each season and how do these influence your perception of each season?
Are there myths, legends or deities that you associate with each season?
Any information you can find about the seasons, anything you feel or know about the seasons, add it to your grimoire, your repository of knowledge!
Good luck and happy crafting!

🎃WITCH-TOBER💐
Tumblr media
hey witches (or whatever term you prefer!)! the spookiest season is fast approaching, and so i wanted to put together a little list of something witchy you can do for each day of our favourite month! majority are low key, and feel free to do all, some or none of the activities - whatever suits you best, this is just a fun way to introduce witchcraft into your month.
do a tarot/oracle/rune/etc spread for the month of october (i’ll post a “new month spread” very soon!)
write out your goals for the month - witchy and not. maybe you want to try journaling more frequently, meditation, going for walks, drinking more water or cooking some meals at home!
write about a new topic in your grimoire/BoS - this could be a topic you’ve been interested in for a while or something totally left field. you never stop learning as a witch!
try learning about your ancestors. this can be hard for many (difficult family relations, not knowing biological families, the like), however if you can find a family name that’s always a great place to start!
spend time in nature/connecting to nature spirits. going and talking to the trees is so incredibly beneficial, especially if you need to talk about something you feel you can’t open up to a person about. the trees, the ocean, the forest and the mountains are always happy to listen to us
create a new candle - sounds hard, but it’s a lot easier than you think! i love making seasonal candles by taking a store bought, plain candle, then dressing it with oil and some herbs. bonus points for using herbs associated with fall/spring (depending on where you live!)
do a manifestation spell with the waxing moon! this can be as elaborate as a full ritual, or as simple as writing your manifestations on a bay leaf/piece of paper and burning it.
witch-ify your beverages! adding intention into your coffee, tea, water or any other drink you prefer is super effective witchcraft! you can also add things to your drink, such as honey for attraction, cinnamon for abundance, or sugar for sweetness (taste wise too)!
i’m really big on cooking seasonally, so if you can, try and cook or bake (even just throw together some things into a sandwich!) using some seasonal ingredients (i.e, pumpkins, root vegetables, stuff like that) in a meal today
happy full moon! don’t forget to cleanse and recharge your crystals, decks, and of course, yourself today. maybe put out some water to creat some moon water!
refresh your altar if you have one - maybe give it a good wipe down with some moon water (or just normal water!), cleanse it and redecorate it however you like
create a new sigil today, either creating one of your own design or using an online generator (like this one!) for prosperity, abundance, protection, whatever you like! use in your craft however it suits you
do some shadow work - i recently posted a 30 days of shadow work challenge, so you could try a prompt from that list or any you find!
try giving an offering to a deity, ancestor or spirit you work with or are wanting to connect to. this can be as simple as offering a portion of your food to them, or an entire ritual dedicated to them - whatever works best for you!
look into your astrology! if you’ve never looked at your chart before, there are lots of different websites that can do it such as this one, and they’ll give you a pretty in-depth dissection of your chart!
cleanse your space - either with a smoke method, sound, a spray, or visualisation!
try doing some mindful movement - this can also work as a meditative practice! this includes walking, yoga, running, or weight training. set your intention first, then see how you go!
find out some local lore of the town you live in! it’s often a lot more interesting than you think. i also love to learn about local native plants in my area that i can then use in my craft!
refresh any wards your have set up if you have them, or if you don’t, now is a great time to set one up! they can be very simple or complex depending on the method you choose, and there are several great posts on here about them!
as the moon wanes (gets smaller!), now is the perfect time to do some releasing. write anything you want to let go of - people, things, attachments, etc. - on a piece of paper and burn it or otherwise dispose of it
read a new witchy book - don’t sleep on your local libraries! there’s also plenty of pdf books about witchcraft topics online if you can’t get your hands on
make a spell jar! this kind of magick is super fun, relatively simple, and can be done quickly with items you already have. any jar is suitable, such as the jar from your pasta sauce, not just the aesthetic ones you see on tiktok! add your ingredients along with your intent, seal with wax from a candle and set it wherever suits the intention.
practice some grounding. place your bare feet on some soil or grass, or even hold some soil if you don’t have access to natural ground today. visualise roots growing from the centre of the earth towards you, and from the centre of you towards the earth. see them intertwine and let mother earth ease your physical, spiritual, and mental struggles, pain or heavy emotions
visit a cemetery if you have one close by. you don’t need to go to one holding someone you know, it’s still just as meaningful to visit a new one you’ve never been to (a post soon coming on what to do when visiting a graveyard!)
put together a witchy playlist! this can be for your walk or to start your day, to listen whilst you practice/divine, or just to play to help you feel a bit better. if you don’t want to make your own, you can always just listen to one someone else has curated!
make a cleansing scrub - all you really need is some salt (medium-ground works well for scrubs!), any oil of your choosing, and some herbs if you choose. make sure anything you add is body safe!!! set your intention whilst using and allow the scrub to cleanse away any spiritual “dirt” you’ve accumulated
enchant a piece of jewellery! can be a ring, a necklace, bracelet, a pair of earrings, or even bobby pins used in your hair
write a gratitude list. get specific and write as many individual things as you can!
reflect on the goals you wrote down at the start of the month. have you achieved them? why/why not? is there something you achieved that you didn’t write down that you’re proud of?
do some protection magick. the spirit/earthly worlds are growing closer now, so some extra protection can never hurt!
happy Samhain/Beltane/Halloween! the veil is thin today, so now is the perfect time to reach out to spirits (safely of course!) and try a (potentially new) form of divination!
i hope this gives you some ideas for witchy things to do this month! just as a reminder, your craft is so personal to you, please don’t let me or anyone else ever tell you what you should or shouldn’t be doing in your craft (unless you’re taking from closed practices - DONT DO THAT). never feel bad for not having the energy or not being able to partake in a certain activity. you are always a witch, no matter how you practice.
love always, taylah. 🤍
